Hong Kong’s M+ museum of contemporary visual culture is celebrating its first anniversary with a special exhibition, Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now, featuring over 200 works by the 93-year-old Japanese contemporary artist. New works include: Death of Nerves (2022); Dots Obsession—Aspiring to Heaven’s Love (2022); and Pumpkin (2022), which includes two large sculptures. The Yayoi Kusama retrospective will run until May 14, 2023.

The world-famous Rio Carnival is an annual celebration that typically starts on the Friday preceding Ash Wednesday. During what some call the “greatest show on Earth,” the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second-largest city, come to life with performers wearing extravagant costumes and revelers singing and clapping to samba music. Throughout the five-day festival, Rio’s samba schools compete to win the championship. This year, the Carnival festivities will start on February 17, with the final Champions Parade taking place on Saturday, February 25.

While those in the northern hemisphere spend the start of each new year in the cold of winter, destinations in the southern hemisphere offer visitors the excitement of new beginnings in the warmth of summer. The Summer Night Market in Melbourne, Australia, held at the Queen Victoria Market, is one of the city’s cultural hotspots and a great place to enjoy a fun evening out. Visitors to the market can find items created by local artisans, sample the delectable treats sold at stalls and food trucks, enjoy performances from musicians and DJs and more. Running every Wednesday until March 15, the market opens at 5 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m.

The Delhi Shopping Festival will be held in various locations across the city from January 28 to February 26. 새해의 밤을 수놓는 등불 축제매년 2월 열리는 타이완 등불 축제는 새로운 한 해가 무사하길 기원하는 전통 축제 중 하나다. 이번 축제 역시 2월 5일부터 19일까지 ‘광원 타이베이’를 주제로 국부 기념관, 시민 광장, 시청 광장 등 168만m²에 달하는 대규모 도심에서 열린다. 해마다 그 해를 상징하는 십이지신을 전시하는 만큼 올해는 대형 토끼가 등불로 전시되고 레이저 쇼, 분수 쇼, 테마에 맞춘 창작 음악과 댄스 등으로 눈을 즐겁게 할 예정이다.
The Taiwan Lantern Festival is a traditional event held in February to usher in the Lunar New Year. Under the theme Light Up the Future, this year’s festival is being held across 168 hectares in Taipei in various locations including the park of the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Taipei City Hall Plaza, from February 5-19. As the main lanterns correspond with the year’s zodiac sign, giant installations of rabbits are expected to be showcased alongside laser displays, light and water shows, live music and dance performances.

Osaka’s Shinsekai district was once as popular as the city’s Dotonbori area, but its popularity had declined over the years. However, Tsutenkaku Tower, located smack-dab in the center of Shinsekai, was upgraded and the district has drawn renewed attention. It now has three different observation platforms, diorama displays, a capsule toy corner and much more. Perhaps the most exciting attraction is the huge slide descending from the third floor to the first basement level.

Nagoya’s Nabana no Sato flower garden is one of Japan’s top nighttime attractions and is receiving renewed interest. The site is enhanced throughout with special lighting and contains such highlights as an indoor begonia garden, spacious hot springs, a beer garden and a tunnel that sparkles with lights all winter long. The Tunnel of Light is the most popular photo spot in the garden as countless bulbs create a blanket of lights that stretches into the distance. Nabana no Sato is part of Nagashima Resort, which is located about 50km away from Chubu Centrair International Airport.

LaLaport, a large new shopping mall filled with a wealth of food, beverage and fashion options, is one of the hottest places in Fukuoka these days. This, the first LaLaport on the island of Kyushu, is located on the site of Fukuoka’s former fruit and vegetable market, and its Food Marche (food court) offers seasonal agricultural products delivered directly from nearby farms. There was a time when VR and AR were the concern of gamers, but the pandemic changed all that. In 2020, thanks to a boom in online travel VR, locked-down globetrotters found that they could tour ancient Pompeii, join ice bathers in Helsinki or go shopping in the fragrant souks of Marrakesh — all without leaving their sofas.
For those needing to brush up on tech acronyms, VR (virtual reality) is a technology that creates an immersive virtual environment, which may or may not resemble a real-life space. Meanwhile, AR (augmented reality) augments or improves upon a real-world scene, and is only 25 percent virtual. These experiences can involve dedicated virtual reality hardware such as headsets, or simply be accessed online or via a phone app.

코로나19 팬데믹 이후 불어닥친 이러한 가상 여행 트렌드로 미국과 유럽의 유명 여행지들은 앞다퉈 VR과 AR을 접목하고 있다. 2022년 9월 독일 함부르크는 여행객들이 고대 항구에서 수천 년의 역사를 직접 체험할 수 있는 AR 체험 프로그램인 ‘미래의 관문’을 선보였다. 같은 해 출시된 ‘노트르담 가상 체험 역사 여행’은 파리 고딕 성당의 천년 역사를 둘러보는 투어를 제공하는 VR 상품이다. 파리는 물론 그 외 다른 지역에서도 경험할 수 있다. 미국에서는 ‘일리노이 가상현실 즐기기’ VR 상품을 내놓았는데, 사용자들은 그 유명한 66번 국도를 달려 전형적인 미국의 모습을 드러내는 콜린스빌의 세계에서 가장 큰 케첩 통을 감상할 수 있다.
VR과 AR을 통한 여행은 여행자가 직접 가보는 것이 아니기에 여행지 보존에도 도움을 준다. 이집트 정부가 VR을 기반으로 만들려고 하는 ‘에코 이집트’는 화이트 사막이나 타바의 고대 항구처럼 비교적 알려지지 않은 지역의 홍보용으로 사용된다. 또한 새롭게 출시된 360˚ VR 투어는 테러리스트의 폭파 위협을 받아온 유네스코 세계문화유산인 이라크 쿠르디스탄 자치구의 수도 아르빌에 생명을 불어넣었다.

The digital experiences made possible by these technologies have myriad potentials, including opening up travel to those unable to set off for distant lands, enabling virtual time travel and personalizing travel.
The pandemic showed the technologies’ utility as a means to explore destinations from the comfort of home, says William Higham, lifestyle trend spotter and co-director of strategy agency, Next Big Thing. Next, Higham says, will be a mass rollout of these technologies at tourist spots: “For instance, walking around the Acropolis with a headset on could give you a glimpse of what it would have looked like in ancient times."
Similarly, Eternal Notre-Dame, launched in 2022, is a VR product that offers a whistle-stop tour of the Parisian gothic cathedral’s thousand-year history.
VR and AR can also lessen the impacts of tourist footfall, as they make the case for preserving sites. Eco Egypt, a VR-based initiative from the Egyptian government, aims to promote lesser-visited areas of the country; while a new 360° VR tour brings to life the Erbil Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.
A major application of these technologies in the coming years will be in travel booking and planning. Igoroom, launched in 2021, allows travelers the opportunity to virtually explore luxury resorts, including Six Senses and Shangri-La properties, where they can check out the sunset views and experience how it feels to swim through coastal coral reefs.

5 Park Hamesila After years of planning and transformation, Tel Aviv unveiled a new outdoor park along the route of the old Ottoman-era railway. Popular with locals, the new park provides a continuous connection for cyclists and pedestrians from Nahalat Binyamin and Herzl Street to the sea.
6 Neve Tzedek Established in 1887, this charming, quaint neighborhood is the city’s equivalent of Soho. If we could have set up a time-lapse camera here, it would have documented human habitation unfolding alongside its river for more than 65,000 years. The oldest frames of the city are captured not through our devices but in the fabric of the landscape and the stories passed down by its traditional custodians. Strolling through the streets, you sense a city that's finally comfortable in its own skin. Edgy street murals and small bars enliven inner city laneways. Residents flock to the river to dine on dumplings and saganaki (Greek fried appetizers), swim in rooftop pools, brunch in warehouses and gather in craft breweries to drink experimental beer under a beaming sun and blanket of blue sky. Lined with art, hip bars and diverse restaurants, Brisbane River flows through the heart of the city. The growing collection of rooftop drinking spots and chic hotel pools offers spectacular elevated vistas from sunrise to sunset.
Early risers can make the scenic 870m overwater dash from Howard Smith Wharves to New Farm on the Brisbane Riverwalk and sip takeaway flat whites (Aussie term for latte) by the river. A cultural tour exploring the indigenous and non-indigenous art installations along the river's banks reveals a depth to this city that reaches far beyond its skyscrapers. “One of the things we talk about on the Kurilpa Bridge is a Dreaming story shared by the Yaggera people. They share about how the river was created when the rainbow serpent had a battle with the green tree frog and the sand goanna (monitor lizard),” says Cassy Saunders, a tour guide at the indigenous-owned and operated BlackCard Cultural Tours. “Art is a good way for people to learn about our culture and history, because it’s not so confronting. It’s a way to break down what happened,” Cassy says.

Over the last five years, the food and bar scene in Brisbane has flourished with new talent. It’s finally caught up to Australia’s top cities like Sydney and Melbourne, but it didn’t get here through imitation. New suburban foodie precincts are emerging, offering everything from artisanal cheese shops to natural wine bars serving up snack foods, pét-nats and orange wine. In areas with no previous appeal, hip hangouts are popping up, such as the industrial suburb of Albion. Scattered with industrial facilities and residential homes, it’s now one of the city’s most happening places to eat and drink. Craft’d Grounds is a new precinct that attracts locals with a craft brewery, gin distillery, cheese shop and wine bar.
Brisbane has also established itself as one of Australia’s best cities for artisanal beer. “Craft beer is massive here, and I think it’s just down to years and years of drinking in the sun,” laughs Drew Campbell, owner of tour company Kiff & Culture, which operates from Brisbane all the way down to Byron Bay. “The heat plays a big role and our Brisbane climate lends itself to enjoying a nice cold beer, even if it’s in the middle of winter when we often get days over 20C.” As well as the option of exploring the craft beer scene on foot in various neighborhoods — including Newstead, Teneriffe and Fortitude Valley (known affectionately among locals as "The Valley") — you can enjoy a pub cruise with River to Bay and travel to the breweries by river.

Australia’s third-largest city has plenty of urban kudos, but for every hotel, restaurant and bar, there’s a UNESCO-listed national park, surfing beach or wildlife encounter waiting to be discovered. Nature isn’t just on the periphery here, it’s quite literally at your fingertips — you can cuddle an endangered koala and hand-feed kangaroos right in the city at the 18-hectare Lone Pine Sanctuary. The largest and oldest koala sanctuary in the world is where you can learn how leaves are sorted ahead of meal times for the adorable but fussy eaters. Koala breeding season falls between September and February, with most babies being born from March to July. To see the furry little faces of koala joeys peering out from their mothers’ pouches — another highlight not to be mised —time your trip accordingly.
For those visiting in the summer months, (November to January), where temperatures can hover in the upper 20 degrees C, the perfect place to cool off is Streets Beach, a man-made, inner-city beach surrounded by sub-tropical plants and patrolled by lifeguards all year round. The South Bank icon is an urban oasis featuring a white sandy beach and a bright blue lagoon, with the backdrop of Brisbane’s skyline glistening beyond.

Just beyond Brisbane, a natural wonderland of pristine beaches and Gondwana rainforests awaits in southeast Queensland. An easy one to two-hour drive from the city, the Gold Coast has no shortage of ways for you to immerse yourself in breathtaking nature, often without even really trying.
Unspoiled and teeming with native flora and fauna, the rainforest-rich Gold Coast hinterland has some of the best hikes and scenic drives in Australia. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, home to a concentration of rare, threatened and endemic species, Lamington National Park offers everything from short 30-minute strolls to multi-day walks, and boasts over 500 waterfalls. And at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat nearby, an off-road Segway tour is a great way to explore the ancient rainforest and its majestic lookouts.
For those looking to stay closer to the coast, a walk of the 2.4km Burleigh Head National Park Ocean track reveals coves and beaches. There's plenty of places for pondering or paddling, including sheltered Echo Beach.
History lovers can head to the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre to join the Jellurgal Walkabout tour. The center is fully owned and operated by the local Aboriginal community. During the two-hour trek, Aboriginal guides tell visitors about the local history, and stories and customs of the indigineous people as they hike up to the top of Jellurgal Mountain and back. Upon their return, visitors can opt to cleanse their spirits in a traditional ceremony in which the wet leaves of native plants are burned. They can then walk through the smoke to cleanse themselves of bad spirits.

With more than 70km of sandy coastline, the Gold Coast is a surfer’s paradise by name, and by nature. 5 Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Head to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where you can enjoy a gourmet breakfast surrounded by Koalas and learn about conservation projects. The Breakfast with Koalas experience includes entry to the Sanctuary for the day.

Bristol, the pretty city that straddles the River Avon in southwest England, may be small with only half a million inhabitants, but it's a creative powerhouse. With its list of impressive residents, past and present, the city’s reputation as a creative hub should come as no surprise. Notable Bristolians include Hollywood film icon Cary Grant and street artist Banksy. The world-famous artist has his artistic roots in the wave of street art that took Bristol by storm in the 1980s. Along with a walking tour to spot Banksy’s early works, visitors can join Europe’s biggest street art festival, Upfest, in the Bedminster area of the city. Then, there are the “Bristol sound” trip hop musicians Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky, plus Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations, creators of the much-loved Wallace & Gromit films. In addition, the world-leading BBC Natural History Unit has its home in Bristol, as does international wildlife film festival, Wildscreen. In fact, Bristol hosts several international film festivals, including the Afrika Eye and Palestinian festivals, which attract filmmaking greats. The city also has Britain’s oldest working theater, the Bristol Old Vic.

Creativity is woven into the physical fabric of Bristol. The former central port is now a cultural hub: the Harbourside, where the M Shed museum traces the heritage of the city. Meanwhile, Victorian warehouses have been converted into arts and cultural institutions, such as contemporary gallery Arnolfini. Bristol not only supports established artists, but offers spaces for budding artisans to showcase their craft. Bristolians are fiercely proud of their independent spirit and heading to one of the city’s many markets is a great way to meet talented creatives.
St Nicholas Market showcases independent artisans and on Fridays and Saturdays, the Bristol Indies’ Market is chock-a-block with handcrafted gifts, artwork, photography and vintage clothing. Keep a look out also for Made in Bristol exhibitions, arts and crafts events, and pop-up shops in venues across the city. The initiative aims to support and promote the rich diversity and quality of local creative talent, working with a wide range of quality makers, such as sculptors, painters, illustrators, jewellers and photographers.

At shop and gallery Fig, six creative people have formed an arts and crafts cooperative where they display their handmade items. Robyn Coetzee makes kiln-formed glass jewellery and decorative items, while Andy Mason carves wood into artwork and homeware. Chitra Merchant and Anna Harley are printmakers, and Jemima Lumley makes custom jewellery. The sixth creative is Kate Tarling, a textile artist who specializes in making fabric maps. One of her maps, made using painted silk and freehand machine embroidery, is of Gloucester Road, where Fig is situated. The street is renowned for being one of the country’s longest roads of independent retailers. “It’s a fantastic destination to support local makers and hunt out things you won’t find anywhere else in the world,” says Tarling. “Although it’s a city, Bristol is more like a collection of little villages, each with its own sense of style.” She says that what makes Bristol unique is that it celebrates the arts in all their forms and promotes art as a valuable and important aspect of people’s lives. “People in Bristol are very friendly, helpful and open. You can be who you want, dress how you like and no-one will judge you,” she adds.
Bristol’s innovative spirit can also be seen in its many independent food and drink brands, especially its lively craft beer scene. The Bristol Beer Factory has a brewery on North Street and has built on its original award-winning Milk Stout to now offer an ever-changing, boundary-breaking range of beers that experiment with production methods and hop varieties. The brewery is open for tours and there’s a tap room in which to sample a range of their brews.

Formerly an area filled with warehouses and factories, Kiyosumi Shirakawa has long been a mercantile and residential area. Over the last decade, this quiet, low-key district — located in eastern Tokyo, near the Sumida River — has attracted a thriving community of artists and designers and blossomed into a vibrant cultural hub. Many of the original warehouses and factories have been converted into boutiques, independent restaurants and other businesses. For those in the know, the district has become synonymous with its many creative studios, art galleries and artisanal coffee shops (hence its nickname “coffee town”). Despite the trendy makeover, Kiyosumi Shirakawa is unpretentious and retains much of its old charm, which can be seen not only in the architecture but also in the quiet pockets of traditional Japanese culture, such as Reiganji Temple and Kiyosumi Gardens. Spend a day wandering the side streets, strolling the river and soaking up Tokyo’s creative side at some of the area’s special hangouts.

Kiyosumi Gardens, located at the heart of Kiyosumi Shirakawa, is a beautiful place for a stroll. The gardens feature a large central pond, numerous stone lanterns and a picturesque teahouse. Alive with color in every season, the garden is home to a diverse spread of foliage and an impressive collection of trees. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and take in stunning views of the dai-sensui (large pond), which is teeming with dappled koi, and take a look at the stone monument memorializing Matsuo Basho’s famous haiku about a frog jumping into a pond.

This shopping street runs between the Kiyosumi-shirakawa Station and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. While exploring this shopping street lined with traditional Japanese shops and the surrounding area, don’t miss local favorite Babaghuri, a boutique store known for using natural materials and dyes. Kiyosumi Shirakawa’s evolution from traditional to contemporary is also manifested in stores such as Rikashitsu. Located in a former apartment building, it now sells local glassware near the popular shopping street.

Kiyosumi Shirakawa is a burgeoning area for coffee aficionados. A short walk from the metro station is the iconic California-based Blue Bottle, one of the key players leading to the explosion of artisan coffee houses and the subsequent rise in the area’s popularity. Check out iki Espresso or stop by the riverfront iki Roastery & Eatery for New Zealand-style baked goods and a variety of coffees. Owners Teru and Kim have also played a role in transforming the district into a coffee destination.

A Hike to Remember
One of the most interesting ways to explore the city’s mix of natural and urban spaces is to walk the Crosstown Trail, a 26.5km diagonal path across the city. Starting at the southeastern corner at Candlestick Point, the various sections of the trail ascend San Francisco’s notoriously steep hills and tiled stairways. It meanders through community gardens, neighborhood streets and forested parks, finishing with Pacific Ocean views at Land’s End. To navigate the trail with ease, download the interactive smartphone app filled with rendezvous points and start the adventure at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. Along the way, Mission Blue is a great place to refuel, browse local art and pick up a Crosstown Trail T-shirt. If you take it slow, the entire walk will take around nine hours with a few stops for family photos, although taking it in stages may be best for families with children.

Parks, Beaches and Cruises
The urban hike isn’t the only way for families to enjoy some of the city’s vast green spaces. Golden Gate Park, stretching over 5km from the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood to Ocean Beach, welcomes an estimated 24 million visitors per year. In the heart of the beloved park, kids and adults can head to the California Academy of Sciences, home to a planetarium, a rainforest, a natural history museum and the Steinhart Aquarium, one of the most biologically diverse in the world.

San Francisco’s Presidio is another massive green space where families can enjoy expansive vistas and public art. Popular with locals is the flat and easy stroll along the bay at Crissy Field, the perfect place to snap that family photo in front of the full span of the Golden Gate Bridge. Just up the hill, the views are equally jaw-dropping at the newly opened Presidio Tunnel Tops. The 5.7 hectare oasis blends nature, curiosity and play, and daily food trucks are now on the scene. Little ones can swing, balance and climb on structures made of fallen trees, boulders and other natural obstacles. After all that action, relax with a cruise around the bay. Blue & Gold Fleet boats leave from Pier 39 and offer 90-minute trips that take in the sunset as it dips behind the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as other sites including Alcatraz and the Bay Bridge, which glitters each evening with an LED light display.

The city’s North Beach neighborhood is full of casual, red-checkered tablecloth spots such as Tony’s Pizza Napoletana. It's where you can try the specialties of the restaurant’s namesake, Tony Gemignani, a World Pizza Cup champion many times over. Park Chalet, across the street from Ocean Beach, has indoor and outdoor seating. They brew their own beer and the menu is peppered with tacos, soups, salads, seafood and burgers.

Cerulean waters lap a dimpled crescent of golden sand. Dazzling sunshine illuminates a row of seafront high-rises. Hills on the horizon promise a rugged and wild landscape. Such portrayals bring to mind Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town or even Miami. But deep in the Eastern Hemisphere lies another metropolitan beach that rivals these better-known seaside cities. Nha Trang (pronounced Nya Chang), a sunny city in Vietnam’s South Central Coast region, is blessed with an extraordinary setting that would give any beach city a run for its money. And yet an array of activities still tempts vacationers away from the soft sand and warm waters. “This city has a little of everything for the family on holiday,” says Kane Ho, who was born in Vietnam, raised in California and moved to Nha Trang in 2014 to open LIVIN Barbeque. “Whether your family is looking to relax or to be active, there are plenty of options.”

He’s not wrong. Nha Trang is speckled with heritage, including ancient temples and colorful pagodas. It has a lively restaurant scene, offering spreads of local seafood and tasty home favorites. And close to the city center lie mud baths, theme parks and golf courses. With so many reasons to do nothing but so many things to do, Nha Trang is becoming an increasingly popular destination for vacationing families. The light surely shines brightest on the beach, with year-round calm waters ideal for young children learning to swim. Laidback beachside bars such as Sailing Club Nha Trang sit right on the sand and make moving between a cocktail and the sea deliciously easy, while older kids and active vacationers can try their hand at paragliding, jet skiing, kite surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Accessible by cable car is Hon Tre, an island packed with entertainment.

이제 베트남다운 장면을 만날 차례다. 나트랑 북부, 화폭에 펼쳐진 그림 같은 풍경을 자랑하는 뽀나가르 사원은 과거 베트남 중남부를 지배했던 참파 왕국의 힌두 신을 기리기 위해 세운 사원. 도시가 지나온 옛 시간에 좀 더 깊이 들어가고 싶다면 1886년에 지어진 나트랑 최대의 불교 사원, 롱선사에서 평온한 미소를 짓고 누워 있는 와불상 앞에 서보자. 1928년 네오고딕 양식으로 건축된 나트랑 대성당은 로컬 사이에서 ‘웨딩 촬영 성지’로 불릴 만큼 낭만적인 풍경을 자랑한다.
한나절 여정이 끝날 무렵엔 피로를 풀어줄 머드 온천으로 향할 것. 탑바 온천은 나트랑에 가장 먼저 생긴 온천장으로 약 20분 동안 머드 스파를 즐가며 뭉친 근육과 여독을 풀 수 있는 곳이다. 출출해지는 저녁엔 미국식 바비큐 스테이크를 내는 리빈 바비큐나 정통 이탤리언 피자와 파스타를 내는 라 칼라에서 든든하게 배를 채워도 좋다.

Back on the mainland, heritage awaits. Sitting on a picturesque hill in northern Nha Trang, the centuries-old Po Nagar Cham Towers, built to honor Hindu gods, are some of the best-preserved temples in the country. Closer to downtown is the 20th century Nha Trang Stone Church, and the Long Son Pagoda, with a huge, seated Buddha. After a day of seeing the sights, Thap Ba mud baths provide a place to unwind.
Alongside the emblematic sights, sounds and smells of urban Vietnam — roaring motorbikes, streetside cafés and bustling markets — there’s an increasingly cosmopolitan side to this dynamic country. LIVIN Barbeque serves up mouthwatering American barbeque, while family-owned La Cala crafts authentic Italian pizza and pasta. To sample Vietnam’s world-famous coffee, as well as tropical fruit juice and creamy milkshakes, there are designer coffee shops such as AN Café.
Nha Trang’s small size and diverse offerings mean that it has all the ingredients to cook up a fun-filled family holiday. Kane Ho sums up the character of the city perfectly: “It’s the weather, the allure of a small beach town and a slower, more relaxed life with all the amenities of a big city.”

Ba Ho Waterfalls, 25km north of Nha Trang, has natural waterfalls, rock pools and an inflatable obstacle course. For a trip away from the coast, head to Dalat, a charming mountain town three hours west of Nha Trang.

The Puffing Billy Railway located in Belgrave, Australia, roughly 40km east of Melbourne, is equipped with trains that used to carry both passengers and freight. Visitors can enjoy nature and experience a part of history by riding on a 100-year-old steam locomotive, winding through the trees of the Dandenong Ranges. Especially appealing to children is the opportunity to see a model of the famous blue train, Thomas, from the animated TV show Thomas & Friends. Visitors taking the Puffing Billy can also ride across a wooden trestle bridge, which looks like it’s come straight out of a movie. Passengers who select the first-class Steam and Cuisine Luncheon can enjoy a three-course meal made from locally sourced ingredients while looking at the scenery passing by from the train’s beautifully restored restaurant carriage.

Super Nintendo World is a theme park that will apppeal to millennials who enjoyed playing Super Mario games on consoles, as well as younger generations who played on the Nintendo Switch. Newly opened in March last year at Universal Studios Japan, the park features Nintendo’s famous characters and offers visitors a peek into their world. It also houses towering recreations of Peach and Koopa Castle and several rides. You can compete with real characters racing on the Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge™ ride, and children can enjoy Yoshi’s Adventure™. Have fun and feel like you’re playing the game in real life by touching blocks and using your smartphone to collect coins and items.

The Disney Wish cruise is a wonderful option for children, parents and grandparents looking to travel together. The Disney Wish cruise ship began sailing in the summer of 2022 and its holiday package consists of a three-night, four-day trip from Florida to the Bahamas. Newly opened March last year, Lotte World Adventure Busan, the city’s only theme park, is divided into six zones. 반려동물과 함께 항공을 이용해 여행하는 경우 국내는 영업일 기준 24시간 전, 해외는 최소 48시간 전 예약이 필요하다. 국가와 지역, 기종에 따라 반려동물 운송이 제한될 수 있고, 항공기당 태울 수 있는 반려동물의 수가 정해져 있기 때문이다. 우선 항공권 예약 전에 반려동물 동반이 가능한 항공편인지 이용할 항공사에 전화로 문의하고, 항공권을 구매한 후 반려동물 운송 서비스를 신청하고 확약을 받는다. 개와 고양이는 항공기 탑승 시 검역 관련 등으로 인해 광견병 예방접종 증명서와 건강진단서를 입국 국가의 언어로 발급받아야 한다. 기내 반입의 경우 생후 8주 이상, 위탁수하물로 보낼 경우 생후 16주 이상의 개, 고양이, 애완용 새만 여객기로 운송이 가능하다. 반려동물의 무게 역시 고려해야 할 대상이다. 대한항공 기준 기내 반입 가능한 무게는 케이지 포함 7kg 이하이며 기준 무게 이상의 반려동물은 운송 용구에 넣어서 위탁수하물로 보내야 한다.
If traveling with a pet on Korean Air, you will need to make a reservation 24 hours in advance for a flight within Korea and at least 48 hours in advance for overseas travel. Restrictions may apply depending on the country, region and type of animal; while the number of pets that can be carried on an aircraft is also limited, so advance booking is a necessity. Before you book, ensure that the airline allows pets on its flights. Then purchase your ticket, register and pay for pet transportation services and ensure you receive confirmation that all procedures are complete. If traveling with dogs or cats you must carry rabies vaccination and health certificates issued in the language of your destination country. Dogs, cats and pet birds must be over eight weeks old to travel in the cabin and over 16 weeks old if traveling in the cargo section. Weight is also a consideration when transporting pets. Korean Air only allows pets under 7kg (including the weight of the pet-carrier) in the cabin; animals weighing more must be transported as cargo.
여행할 때 사람에게 여권이나 신분증이 필요하듯 반려동물에게도 ID가 필요하다. 반려동물의 이름과 반려인의 연락처가 있는 인식표를 준비하도록. 항공기의 경우 마이크로칩이 반려동물에게 이식되어 있어야만 탈 수 있는 경우도 있으니 미리 ISO 마이크로칩을 반려동물에게 삽입해두는 것이 좋다. 2009년 미국수의사회의 연구에 따르면 마이크로칩이 삽입된 개는 그렇지 않은 개보다 반려인과 재회할 확률이 2배 이상 높고, 고양이는 집으로 돌아갈 확률이 20배 이상 높은 것으로 나타났으니 참고하자. 해외에서 갑작스럽게 반려동물이 아프거나 자칫 수술까지 해야 하는 상황이 생길 수 있으므로 의료기록도 챙기자. 수의사로부터 건강 기록, 투약 정보, 예방접종 증명서를 발급받아 챙겨두도록. 반려동물의 전체 의료기록을 스캔하여 파일로 저장해놓는 것도 방법이다. 규정은 항공사와 국가에 따라 다르므로 출발하기 전에 필요 사항 요건을 확인하는 것이 좋다. 일반적으로 증명서의 유효기간은 10일이며, EU의 경우 검역증명서 발급 후 10일 이내에 입국해야 한다. 한국에서 검역할 때도 예약하지 않고 방문하는 경우 검역관 인력 부족으로 당일 검역이 어려울 수 있기 때문에 사전 예약하는 것이 좋다. 출국 전에 검역소에서 미리 검역신청서를 받을 수 있으니 참고할 것. 여행 전에 벼룩 및 진드기 구제를 위한 약을 처치해두는 것이 현명하다.
Just like people need a passport when traveling, pets need an ID too. Prepare an identification tag with the name of your pet and your own contact information. Many airlines only allow pets who have been microchipped to fly. According to a 2009 American Veterinary Medical Association study, dogs with microchips are more than twice as likely to be reunited with their companions compared to those without them, while for microchipped cats it's more than 20 times. Also get copies of your pet’s medical records, medication information and vaccination certificates from your veterinarian. As a backup, you can scan your pet’s medical records into a computer and save them as a digital file. As regulations vary by airline and country, always check any requirements before departure. Generally, medical certificates are valid for 10 days from the date of issue. If you are traveling with your pet to the EU, you must enter the destination country within 10 days of the issuance of a quarantine certificate. If you are visiting Korea, it's a good idea to arrange a quarantine inspection for your pet in advance. To make an appointment, you must obtain an application form from the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency and return it to the agency before your departure. It is also advisable to have your pets take flea or tick medication before they travel.

If you are traveling a long distance by car, visit your veterinarian to get a prescription for pet motion sickness medicine. Dogs thrive on stability, and it’s best to maintain their regular routine for a few days prior to the trip. Also, try to keep meal times consistent with your pet's regular routine and be careful not to feed them too much. It is recommended to feed your pets six to eight hours before travel to prevent nausea during the trip. In addition, bring food from home and give them bottled water to drink. Changes in eating habits can cause gastrointestinal disorders in pets, just as in humans. When you get in the car, don’t leave right away. Instead, sit and play with your pet. Pets familiarize themselves with new places through play, which will also help prevent motion sickness.

Always use an approved pet-carrier when traveling by plane or train. Check the website of the airline or rail company for carrier requirements to make sure yours is in compliance. Korean Air requires carriers for cabins to be no more than 32cm wide, 45cm long and 19cm high. Soft containers can be up to 25cm high. Carriers for the cargo compartment must be no more than 84cm in height and the total measurements of the height, length and width must not exceed 291cm. Make sure the carrier is registered with the airline or rail company prior to boarding, and label it with your pet’s name and your name and contact information. Once you have the carrier, entice your dog or cat to use it before you travel by leaving it out at home and adding your pet’s bedding and favorite snacks.

Various packages are also available for the whole family. In Korea there is the Gyeongin Ara Waterway Sunset Daengdaeng Cruise, the nation’s first cruise product exclusively for dogs; Starfield Patter Park, a water park exclusively for dogs; and Weg Village, a pet theme park. In addition, an increasing number of hotels offer vacation packages that allow pets.

반려동물을 키우는 사람이라면 외출 시 지켜야 할 펫티켓이 무엇인지 확인할 필요가 있다. 먼저 리드줄은 나라마다 잡는 법이 다르다. 한국의 법적 허용 길이는 2m 이내이며 리드줄을 ‘U’ 자 모양이 되도록 양손으로 잡아야 한다. 마킹이나 푸핑은 다른 사람들에게 불편함을 유발할 수 있는 만큼 실내에서 하지 않도록 각별히 신경 써야 한다. 실내에서 마킹하는 반려동물이나 중성화되지 않은 반려동물의 경우 매너 벨트를 착용하도록. 여행하는 지역에 따라 염두에 두어야 할 법규들도 있다. 특정 주에서는 운전자가 적절한 구속 없이 동물을 트럭에 태우는 것을 법으로 금지하고 있다. 한국도 마찬가지. 도로교통법 제39조에 따르면 모든 차의 운전자는 영유아나 동물을 안고 운전 장치를 조작하면 안 된다고 되어 있다. 반려동물을 안고 운전할 경우 승용차는 4만 원, 승합차는 5만 원의 범칙금을 부과받을 수 있다.

If you're planning to take your dog to any dog-friendly indoor facilities before it’s fully potty-trained, it’s best to bring some dog diapers to ensure that there aren’t any unfortunate accidents. There are also local laws to keep in mind. Certain countries prohibit animals from being placed in cars without proper restraint. In Korea, Article 39 of the Road Traffic Act, prohibits drivers from operating a vehicle while holding an infant or animal. Violations can result in a fine of 40,000 won for the driver of a car and 50,000 won when driving a van.

사랑 나무 앞이다. 오로지 이 나무 아래에 서기 위해 부여를 찾는 이들이 많다는 소문을 듣고 성흥산 가림성이라는 생소한 곳에 올랐다. ‘사랑’이라는 이름이 붙은 까닭은 나무의 태에 있다. 완만한 곡선을 그리며 뻗어나간 가지와 몸통이 만드는 둥근 선이 하트의 반쪽을 빼닮았다. 인증 사진 찍는 이들이 만든 줄을 뒤로하고 산마루를 한 바퀴 돌았다. 해발 고도 268m의 낮은 산이지만 비산비야(非山非野)의 땅에선 전망이 제법이다. “부여뿐 아니라 논산, 강경, 한산, 홍산 일대가 한눈에 들어온다”는 설명이 과장이 아니었다. 이 시원한 전망이 백제를 지켰다. 성흥산 가림성은 백제가 수도를 부여로 옮기면서 금강을 거슬러 올라오는 적을 한눈에 파악하기 위해 쌓은 방어 요새. 난공불락의 성으로 기록된 역사가 있다. 인파가 제법 빠져나가고, 드디어 나무 혼자 남은 시간. 높이 22m, 수령 400여 년으로 추정되는 커다란 느티나무는 굳이 반쪽 하트 모양을 찾으려 애쓰지 않아도 마음을 사로잡는다. 사방으로 드넓게 뻗은 가지와 땅 위로 솟아오른 바위 같은 뿌리의 부드럽고 힘 있는 자태. 옛 시대의 흥망성쇠를 다 지켜본 오래된 나무 아래 서서 발아래 장관, 수묵화처럼 담백한 풍경에 한참 시선을 던지다 내려왔다.
부여에 나무 말고도 우뚝 솟은 것이 또 있다. 부여정림사지오층석탑은 단 두 점 남은 백제의 석탑 중 하나로, 유홍준 전 문화재청장은 탑에 부쳐 다음과 같은 찬가를 남겼다. “훤칠한 키에 늘씬한 몸매, 그러나 단정한 몸가짐에 어딘지 지적인 분위기, … 착한 품성과 어진 눈빛, 조용한 걸음걸이에 따뜻한 눈인사를 보낼 것 같은 그런 인상의 석탑이다.” 가까이 다가갔다 멀찍이 서서 관망하며 탑의 조형을 찬찬히 탐색했다. 국명이 여섯 번 바뀐 십수 세기의 세월 동안 제자리에서 원형을 지켜온 존재. 역사책 속 정보에 지나지 않았던 문화유산에 이토록 감흥이 일던 적이 있던가? 검이불루 화이불치(儉而不陋華而不侈). ‘검소하나 누추하지 않고, 아름다우나 사치스럽지 않다’는 백제 미학의 정수를 탑 앞에서 온전히 이해했다.
I stand beside the “Love Tree” in this strange place known as Seongheungsan Mountain’s Garimseong Fortress. I came here after hearing that many travelers visit Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do Province, purely to stand under this same tree. The reason for the tree’s name, Sarang (Love), lies in its form. The shape created by the curves of the branches and trunk resembles half of a heart. I saw people waiting to take a souvenir photo and left them to walk around the mountain ridge.
Although it’s not exactly tall, with a height of just 268m, the view from this not-quite-a-mountain is magnificent, and it helped protect the kingdom of Baekje (18BC-AD660). When the Baekje capital was relocated to Buyeo, Garimseong Fortress was built on this elevated ground. Anyone on watch would be able to see the enemy approaching from the Geumgang River. The crowd soon dispersed and I finally had some time alone with the giant zelkova tree. Standing at around 22m tall and estimated to be 400 years old, this tree has seen the rise and fall of kingdoms.
In addition to the tree, Buyeo is home to another towering structure. A five-story stone pagoda at the Jeongnimsa Temple Site is one of only two such structures from Baekje that still stand today. Former Cultural Heritage Administration director Yu Hong-jun, once offered a glowing review of the pagoda. “The stone pagoda exudes an intellectual aura ... a noble character with a tidy appearance and a benevolent gaze.” I moved closer before standing still to admire it. Even as the name of the country changed six times over more than a dozen centuries, the pagoda stood tall through it all. Awed by all this, I fully understood the Baekje aesthetic of “simple but not humble, and beautiful without extravagance.”
백제의 삶과 생활 터전을 고증해 재현한 백제문화단지와 역대 백제 왕실의 무덤이 있는 부여왕릉원, 눈부시게 아름다운 백제금동대향로를 간직한 국립부여박물관을 지나 궁남지에 들어섰다. 백제 왕가의 정원이다. 634년, 백제 무왕이 만들었으며 연못을 파고 버드나무를 심은 후 못 가운데 섬을 세워 신선이 사는 이상향의 세계, 방장선산(方丈仙山)을 구현했다는 기록이 사서를 통해 전해진다. 추위에도 움츠러들지 않은 연꽃과 연잎이 표표히 떠 있는 못 한가운데 홀연히 자리한 정자, 포룡정과 마주 섰다. 미동 없는 물살과 버드나무, 일렁이는 달빛조차 잠시 멈춘 것 같은 고요가 공기를 가득 채운 밤. 약 1400년 전이라는 아득한 과거에도 누군가가 이 장면 앞에 서 있지 않았을까? 그런 상상을 하며 천천히 못 주변을 거닐었다.
After passing through Baekje Cultural Land, where architectural landmarks from the kingdom have been reconstructed — the Buyeo Royal Tomb Site housing the tombs of Baekje kings and the Buyeo National Museum, which holds the dazzling hidden Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje — I stood before Gungnamji Pond. Located in the garden of the Baekje royal family, it’s said to have been created by King Mu in the year 634. Historical records show that after creating the pond and planting willow trees around it, an island was made in the middle to symbolize Bangjangseonsan Mountain, a place where gods lived. In the night air filled with tranquility, the stillness of the water in the quiet moonlight brings me to think that in the distant past, someone else may have shared this view.
고즈넉한 부여에도 북적이는 시절이 있었다. 1930~1940년 사이 백마강이 지나는 규암마을의 나루터는 이 도시에 들고 나는 물산이 집결하는 관문이었다. 규암 오일장이 열리는 날엔 나루터 주변이 인산인해를 이뤘다. 일본의 한국 수탈 시절, 부여의 비옥한 땅에서 자란 벼를 강제로 공출하기 위해 지소를 세우고 모여 살던 곳도 바로 규암리다. 백화점, 극장, 여관, 양장점, 사진관 같은 도시적 장소들의 흔적이 ‘근대건축’이라는 이름으로 규암의 화려했던 시절을 증거한다. 대로에서 샛길로 마을 구석구석을 걷다 보면 옛날 우체국, 국밥집, 점포, 선술집이었던 구옥들이 속속 눈에 들어온다. 도시 재생이라는 이름으로 서울에서 내려온 젊은 공예가, 예술가, 작가들이 새 활기를 불어넣고 있다. 이 변화의 첫 흐름을 이끈 이는 섬유 공예가이자 기획자 박경아다. 규암마을 골목에 ‘스스로 따뜻해지는 길’이라는 뜻의 이름, 자온길을 붙인 것도 그의 생각이다. 규암마을은 뒷짐 지고 천천히 걸어도 1시간이면 족할 만큼 소담하지만, 기웃댈 만한 곳이 꽤 있어 한나절은 머물러야 한다. 책방 세간은 자온길에 처음 생긴 재생 공간으로 부여 유일의 독립 서점이자 카페. 80여 년 된 담배 가게의 흔적을 고스란히 살린 안쪽 공간으로 들어서면 큐레이션한 책을 골라 넣은 서가와 마을 청년들이 만든 독립 출판물, 공예품 등이 아기자기하게 진열되어 있다. 술과 음식을 파는 요정이었던 수월옥은 주말이면 외지인들로 북적이는 찻집이 됐다. 서울의 건축디자인 스튜디오와 함께 전통 한옥과 근대 가옥의 건축재가 뒤섞인 구옥의 공간미를 정성스럽게 살려 꾸민 안쪽에선 청자와 백자, 색동 방석, 소반, 도자기 등의 공예품을 구경하는 재미도 쏠쏠하다. 마을에서 가장 부잣집이었던 자온양조장 주인의 100년 넘은 근대 한옥은 ‘이안당’이라는 이름의 문화공간으로 바뀌어 공연과 전시, 문화예술 행사가 종종 열린다. 마당 건너 긴 굴뚝을 가진 옛 자온양조장 창고는 곧 브루어리가 될 예정. 멸실의 위기를 건너 새로운 전성기를 기다리는 자온길 구옥들의 변신은 열정적인 창작자들과 함께 현재진행형이다.
The quiet city of Buyeo used to be much busier, and the dock in Gyuam-myeon Township was a gateway where goods were loaded and unloaded during the 1930s and 40s. Traces of modern buildings including department stores, theaters, inns, dressmakers and photo studios are a testament to its glory days.
As I walk from the main road to the backstreets and wander through all corners of the town, I see old houses that used to be post offices, stores and bars. Young artisans, artists and writers from Seoul are breathing new life into this area. The person who led the first wave of change is Park Kyungah, a textile artist and planner. It was her idea to use the name Jaon-gil, which means “becoming warmer on its own,” to refer to this alleyway in Gyuam-myeon. While the area is small enough that it can be explored in about an hour, you could easily spend half a day slowly popping in to the different pockets of the town. Bookstore Se:Gan, the first revitalized space on Jaon-gil, is the only independent bookstore in Buyeo. Inside the building, which retains traces of the tobacco store that stood here for 80 or so years, you can see a neat array of shelves filled with a selection of books, independent publications and craft items made by young people in the town. Suwolok, a former restaurant, is now a teahouse full of out-of-town visitors on weekends. The village is home to the 100-year old hanok of the family that owned Jaon Brewery, which occasionally hosts performances, exhibitions and cultural events in a space known as Iandang. Across the courtyard from the chimneys of the former distillery, an old warehouse is set to be turned into a new brewery. With a team of passionate creators, the transformation of Jaon-gil’s old houses on the brink of extinction remains ongoing.
부여 곳곳을 누비다 보면 어디에서나 윤슬이 반짝이는 너른 백마강을 만난다. 그 강 위를 산들바람처럼 누비는 배 위에 오르기 위해 구드래나루터선착장으로 향한다. ‘황포 돛배’라는 이름을 가진 한선(한국 전통배)은 노란 포를 돛으로 달고 오직 바람의 힘으로만 움직이는 옛 배. 부여에선 백마강 풍광을 감상하는 유람선에 황포 돛배라는 옷을 입혀 관광객들을 실어 나른다. 배를 타고 강줄기를 따라 휘도는 여정도 있지만 대부분은 부소산 선착장에서 한 차례 내린다. 부소산은 백제 왕실의 후원이자 전쟁 땐 왕실을 지킨 요새로 고란사, 삼충사, 영일루와 같은 유적을 보물처럼 품고 있다. 낙화암은 부소산에서 가장 많은 이들이 찾는 곳. ‘백제 의자왕 재위(641~660년) 시절 나당연합군이 쳐들어왔을 때 궁녀들이 치욕을 피하기 위해 치맛자락을 뒤집어쓰고 깊은 강에 몸을 던져 죽은 장소’라는 역사가 서린 낭떠러지 바위다. 고란사에 들러 몸에 좋다는 약수 한 모금으로 목을 축이고 곧장 낭떠러지로 올랐다. 신념을 위해 그 ‘끝’에 선 여인들의 심정을 헤아리고 싶었지만 비극 어린 역사는 강물처럼 흘러가버리고, 벼를 거둔 초겨울의 금빛 들판과 샛노란 돛 휘날리며 두둥실 떠다니는 황포 돛배 몇 척이 서정적인 산수화처럼 펼쳐질 뿐이다. 부여는 그런 곳. 시간을 망각한 여유와 낭만을 좇고 싶은 마음이 슬며시 찾아오는 곳. 이 도시에 머무는 동안 쫓기는 기분으로 시간을 보낸 적이 있던가? 충청도 사람의 넉넉하고 고아한 성품과 꼭 닮은 땅에서 모처럼 자애불의 완연한 미소 같은 평온한 시간을 보냈다.
As you walk around different places in Buyeo, the Baengmagang River is omnipresent. I headed to the Gudeurae Ferry Dock to board a hwangpo dotbae (yellow-sailed boat). Solely powered by wind, the traditional Korean boats use sails naturally dyed a brownish-yellow color. Tourists wishing to see the sights of the Baengmagang River in Buyeo are given yellow clothing saying “hwangpo sailboat” before boarding. Although you can take the boat for a winding trip that follows the course of the river, most people disembark at the Busosan Mountain Wharf. The mountain was both the rear garden for the Baekje royal family and a means of defense in times of war. Nakhwaam Rock, a popular place to visit on Busosan Mountain, is a cliff steeped in history. Legend has it that court ladies jumped to their death in the deep river when the allied forces of the Silla Kingdom and the Tang Dynasty defeated Baekje during the reign of King Uija (641-660).
At Goransa Temple, I quench my thirst with a sip of mineral water, then head up to the storied cliff. I attempt to put myself in the shoes of those women who stood at the brink and imagine how they must have felt, but their tragic story drifts away like the river below. Instead, the scene that unfolds is like an elaborate landscape painting — the golden fields where rice has been harvested, people in the distance enjoying a hike and several boats on the river with their bright yellow sails. Buyeo is that kind of place. A place where your heart is slowly permeated by a desire to seek freedom and romance that knows nothing of the passage of time. Looking back, I’ve enjoyed a peaceful time in a land that embodies the generous and elegant character of the people of Chungcheongnam-do Province.

백제문화단지는 약 1400년 전 백제의 궁과 절, 귀족과 서민의 마을을 실감 나게 재현한 곳. 이곳에서 왕이 머물던 사비궁 천정전의 어좌에 앉아 왕이 바라보던 풍경을 감상해보자. 백제 미학의 절정을 만나고 싶다면 국립부여박물관에 잠시라도 꼭 들러보길 권한다. 백제금동대향로와 독대할 수 있는 방이 있다. 인류사에서 손에 꼽힐 만큼 완성도 높은 금속공예 작품으로 23개의 산과 계곡, 폭포를 비롯해 봉황과 용, 호랑이와 사슴 등의 동물 그리고 각종 인간 군상이 변화무쌍하게 표현되어 있다.
Baekje Cultural Land features re-creations of the palaces and temples, as well as the noble and commoner villages of Baekje from some 1,400 years ago. Enjoy the scenery from atop the royal throne in Sabigung Palace’s Cheonjeongjeon Hall, where the Baekje kings used to stay. If you’re looking to see the pinnacle of Baekje aesthetics, spend some time looking around Buyeo National Museum. There is a room where you can see the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje, one of the finest works of metalcraft in Korean history.
K-Food
풍등을 강가에 띄우거나 하늘에 날려 보낸다. 화려한 퍼레이드나 불꽃놀이를 하는가 하면 집 안의 술을 모두 마시고 해수욕을 한다. 이처럼 새해가 되면 모든 나라가 각각의 전통에 맞는 의식을 치른다. 액운을 끊고 행운을 바라는 그들만의 기원이 담겨 있다. 한국 역시 특별하게 새해를 맞는다.
설날은 한국의 가장 큰 명절이다. 음력 1월 1일이 되면 여러 가지 세시풍속을 행하는데, 가장 대표적인 것이 바로 차례다. 아침 일찍 대청마루에 모인 가족들이 둘러친 병풍 앞에 제상을 차리고 음식을 올린다. 조상에게 제사를 지내며 가족의 무사 안녕을 비는 절을 한다. 차례가 끝나면 모든 가족이 둘러앉아 차린 음식을 나눠 먹는다. 한국의 대표적 명절인 설과 추석의 차례상에 오르는 메뉴는 대개 비슷하다. 지역에 따라 차이는 있지만 녹두전 같은 각종 전과 잡채, 갈비찜 같은 고기류, 계절 과일 등이 공통으로 올라간다. 그러나 설날엔 특별한 음식이 추가된다. 바로 떡국이다. 설 아침에는 밥과 국 대신 떡국을 차례상에 올린다. 맑은국에 납작하게 썬 가래떡을 넣고 끓인 떡국을 먹어야 한다. 둥근 떡은 달을 뜻하고 맑고 흰 국물은 태양의 밝음을 상징하는 떡국을 먹음으로써 비로소 한 살을 더 먹는다고 생각한다. 설 차례를 ‘떡국차례’라고도 부를 정도로 떡국이 의미하는 바는 크다.
Every country and its people have their own traditions and ceremonies for the New Year. Some float lanterns on the river or send them flying into the sky, while others watch flashy parades and fireworks. Traditions like drinking all the alcohol in the house or going for a swim in subzero temperatures can also be found. They all have their own unique origins with wishes to bring in good luck and keep away the bad. Naturally, Korea also has special ways to greet the New Year.
Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year) is one of Korea’s biggest holidays. On the first day of the year on the lunar calendar, various seasonal customs are observed. The most representative one is charye, a memorial ceremony held for one’s ancestors. Early in the morning, families gather on the daecheong maru (the main, wooden-floored hall in traditional Korean homes) or the biggest room of the house and prepare a memorial table in front of folding screens with special food. They perform memorial rites for their ancestors known as jesa and bow in prayer for the safety and well-being of their families. When the ceremony is over, the whole family sits down together and shares the jesa food.
The spread for the memorial ceremonies of Korea’s two biggest holidays, Seollal and Chuseok (Korean Harvest Festival) are quite similar. Different regions have nuanced changes, but the meal typically includes some kind of jeon (Korean savory pancake) such as nokdu jeon (mung bean pancakes), japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), a meat dish like galbi-jjim (braised beef short ribs) and seasonal fruits. But Seollal has one special food: tteokguk (rice cake soup). On the morning of the Lunar New Year, it’s customary for everyone to have the soup made with garae-tteok (long, tubular rice cake) sliced into flat pieces and boiled in a clear broth. The coin-shaped rice cake slices represent the moon, while the clear, white broth symbolizes the brightness of the sun. There’s even a common belief that eating tteokguk makes you a year older. The tradition around this dish is so important and widely observed that the Lunar New Year ancestral rites are sometimes referred to as “tteokguk charye.”
떡은 기록만으로도 2000년의 역사를 지녔다. 김치에 넣는 고추의 역사가 400년이라는 것을 감안하면 떡은 한국인의 말 그대로 솔 푸드다. 설날만큼 중요한 명절 추석의 절식(節食, 절기에 맞춰 만들어 먹는 음식)이 송편이라는 것도 이를 방증한다. 설날 떡국은 최소 18세기 중엽의 기록에서 나타난다. 조선 후기 실학자 성호 이익(1681~1763)은 저작집 <성호전집>에 “설에 떡국을 올리는데 이 떡국은 떡을 잘라 만든 것”이라고 기록했다.
“지금의 떡국은 가래떡을 어슷썰어서 넣지만, 과거에는 동그란 모양으로 썰었습니다. 동전처럼 동그란 떡이 들어간 떡국을 먹으며 많은 부를 쌓고자 하는 염원을 담았죠. 왕이 먹을 때 목에 걸리지 않도록 만들기도 했고요”라고 한식 아카데미 푸드앤컬쳐코리아의 김수진 한식 연구가는 말한다. 사실 새해에 동그란 음식을 먹는 곳은 한국만이 아니다. 멕시코는 열두 알의 포도를 먹으며 소원을 빌고 프랑스는 둥글넓적한 디저트인 갈레트 데 루아를 나눠 먹는다. 미국은 검은색 반점이 있는 콩을 볶은 호핑 존을 먹는다. 둥근 요리에 의미를 담아 행운과 재물이 들어오길 바라는 마음은 세계 어느 나라나 같았다. 조상에게 예를 다하는 한국의 설날 차례상은 그 시절 최고의 식재료로 만든 귀한 음식으로 채웠다. 질 좋은 소고기에 간장 양념을 넣고 푹 조려 만든 갈비찜이 대표적이다. 지역에 따라 산적이나 떡갈비 등의 고기를 올리기도 했다. 기름진 것이 부족하던 시절, 기름에 지진 음식은 최고의 제사 음식으로 쳤다. 서울에서는 녹두를 갈아 녹두전을 부쳤고 바닷가 인근 마을에서는 현지에서 잡히는 생선을 주로 이용했다.
“외국인들이 호불호 없이 좋아하는 잡채는 원래 여러 채소를 섞어 볶아 만든 것이었는데, 1920년대 중국에서 당면이 들어오면서 그것을 넣기 시작했어요. 그때부터 지금 모습의 잡채가 됐죠.”
제철이란 단어가 무색할 만큼 요즘의 식재료는 풍족하다. 떡국, 갈비찜, 잡채, 녹두빈대떡 역시 마음만 있으면 쉽게 먹을 수 있다. 하지만 절기에 맞춰, 한 해의 행복을 빌며 먹는 것은 또 다른 의미가 있다. 사랑하는 사람들과 무사한 한 해를 기원하며 정갈한 한식 한 상을 나눈다면 완벽한 한 해를 시작할 수 있다.
Historical records show that rice cakes date back some 2,000 years. Considering that the red peppers used to make kimchi only date back around 400 years, rice cakes are soul food for Koreans. The significance of rice cakes in Korea's food culture is further evidenced by the fact that the representative traditional food or jeolsik (specific foods made and eaten for each change of season) for Chuseok is songpyeon, a half-moon shaped rice cake. Interestingly, Korea is not the only place where round foods are enjoyed in celebratrion of the New Year. In Mexico, it's customary to eat 12 grapes and make a wish, while in France, they share a round, pie-shaped dessert known as Galette des Rois or King’s Cake. These round dishes signify the wish for good luck and fortune that's shared by nations around the world.
In addition to the shape of foods, the Korean Seollal ceremonial table is filled with dishes made with the best seasonal ingredients to pay respects to one’s ancestors. With ingredients so abundantly available nowadays, the word “seasonal” has somewhat lost its meaning, but there was a time where there was a shortage of rich, fatty foods, and dishes fried in oil were considered the best food for the jesa ceremony. While many of the special holiday foods are available year round these days, sharing a table of beautifully presented Korean food in its season with loved ones and praying for a safe year ahead is the perfect way to start the New Year.
1 떡국떡과 대파(25g)를 썬다.
2 물에 소고기, 무, 남은 대파를 함께 넣고 센 불에서 30분, 중불에서 30분 끓인다. 국물은 면 보자기에 거른다.
3 건진 소고기를 찢어 국간장(1T), 참기름(1T), 소금(1t), 깨(1t), 후춧가루 약간을 넣고 양념한다.
4 달걀을 풀어 얇게 부친 뒤 채 썬다.
5 걸러놓은 육수에 떡을 넣고 떡이 동동 떠오를 때까지 끓인다. 소금으로 조금씩 간한다. 떡이 떠오르면 1~2분 뒤 불을 끈다.
6 그릇에 떡과 국물을 담고 양념한 고기, 대파, 달걀 지단을 올린다.
1 Slice the rice cakes and half (25g) of the Korean daepa or scallions.
2 Boil the beef with radish and Korean daepa/scallions over high heat for 30 minutes. Reduce to medium heat and boil for 30 minutes. Strain the broth through a cotton cloth.
3 Remove the beef from the broth and shred finely. Season with soy sauce (1 tbsp), sesame oil (1 tbsp), salt (1 tsp), sesame seeds (1 tsp) and a pinch of black pepper.
4 Beat the eggs and cook on a pan on low heat. Then, cut into thin slices.
5 Add the rice cakes to the broth and boil until they rise to the top. Add salt to taste and boil the soup for 1-2 more minutes after they float to the surface. Turn off the heat.
6 Fill a bowl with the broth and rice cakes and top with the seasoned beef, Korean daepa/scallions, and egg slices.

영국의 건축가 자하 하디드가 설계한 동대문디자인플라자, DDP는 2014년 개관 이후 서울을 대표하는 관광 명소이자 문화예술의 중심지가 됐다. 3차원 비정형 건축물인 이곳에서는 세계적 예술가들의 전시부터 패션쇼, 포럼 등 다양한 문화 행사가 진행되는 것은 물론 조선시대 역사의 흔적, 서울의 현재와 미래까지 한눈에 감상할 수 있다. 디자인랩 1층에 위치한 오픈 라운지 D-숲에서는 ‘누구나 디자이너가 되는 곳’이라는 콘셉트로 디자인 관련 브랜드나 라이프스타일을 만날 수 있다. 3층 매거진 라이브러리는 디자인과 건축, 라이프스타일 관련 107종의 국내외 매거진을 소장하고 있다.
Since opening in 2014, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, has become a major tourist attraction and the heart of art and culture in Seoul. The amorphous three-dimensional structure is home to a variety of cultural events, exhibitions by famous artists, fashion shows and forums. D-Forest is a lounge on the first floor of the DDP’s Design Lab “where anyone can become a designer.” It showcases design-related brands. The magazine library on the third floor of Design Lab houses 107 Korean and foreign magazines on design, architecture and lifestyle. Meanwhile, the graphic art exhibition Jean Jullien: Then, There is running at the DDP until January 8.
SINDANG-DONG
DDP와 연결된 이곳은 옛 동대문운동장 부지에 구축된 역사문화 테마공원으로 2009년에 개장했다. 2008년 공사 도중 이간수문(동대문과 광희문 사이에 위치해 서울 남산에서 흘러나오는 물길을 조절하던 수문)이 처음 발견됐고 한양도성 일부와 조선 전기에서 일제강점기 시기의 도자류 등 유물 1000여 점이 출토됐다. 유물 대부분은 공원 내 동대문역사관에, 이간수문 등은 조형물로 보존하고 있다.
Built on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park opened in 2009. During construction, a floodgate that controlled the flow of water from Namsan Mountain to the Dongdaemun and Gwanghuimun gates was discovered, along with 1,000 other artifacts, including parts of Seoul City Wall (Hanyangdoseong) and ceramics from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Most of these are kept at the Dongdaemun History Museum.
동대문패션타운은 전통시장과 현대식 복합쇼핑몰이 어우러진 패션산업 집적지로 2002년 관광특구로 지정됐다. 31개 대형 상가의 3만여 점포와 15만 명에 이르는 패션 종사자가 모인 이곳은 중국, 일본, 타이완 등의 관광객과 소매상, 바이어들이 찾는 세계적 패션 상권이자 관광 명소다. 낮보다 밤에 더 활발한 곳으로 원단부터 완성품에 이르기까지 옷에 관련된 모든 제품을 찾을 수 있고 인근에 노포, 맛집, 숙박 시설이 많아 필수 관광 코스로 손꼽힌다.
Dongdaemun Fashion Town, a fashion district comprising traditional markets and modern shopping malls, was designated a Special Tourist Zone in 2002. The neighborhood’s roughly 30,000 shops in dozens of shopping plazas have created a hub for global fashion commerce and become a tourist destination. At the shops, which really come to life at night, you can find products related to every stage of clothing production, from fabrics to finished garments. Nearby stores, restaurants and places of accommodation make it a prime gathering place for tourists.
DDP 인근의 동대문패션타운 SINDANG-DONG
동대문패션타운의 신평화패션타운과 동평화패션타운 뒤편으로 길게 이어진 청계천은 산책로와 탐방로, 다양한 형상의 분수와 야간 조명 등이 설치된 하천이다. 종로구와 중구를 가르는 약 10km의 하천에는 총 22개 다리가 놓여 시민들이 어디서나 청계천을 쉽게 즐길 수 있다. 사시사철 맑은 물이 흐르는 청계천은 서울 속에서 계절의 변화를 가장 드라마틱하게 느끼기 좋은 곳 중 하나다. 시장 천막의 이미지를 막 구조로 적용한 바로 옆 새벽다리는 동대문시장의 역사성을 표현한 것이다.
Cheonggyecheon Stream, which passes Dongdaemun’s Shin Pyounghwa Fashion Town and Dong Pyounghwa Fashion Town shopping centers, is a small waterway with walking paths, fountains and lanterns. Twenty-two bridges cross the 10.9km-long stream that cuts through Jongno-gu and Jung-gu districts, and the water is clear year-round. It is one of the best places in Seoul to witness the seasons changing. Saebyeok Dari (Dawn Bridge) has a roof over it resembling a market tent, in honor of the history of the adjacent market.
즉석 떡볶이의 원조로 알려진 마복림 할머니가 1953년 이곳에서 처음 떡볶이를 만들어 팔았던 곳으로, 지금은 수많은 즉석 떡볶이 식당들이 들어선 특화 거리다. 마복림 할머니는 우연히 중국 음식점에서 개업을 자축하며 내온 떡을 먹다가 실수로 짜장면 그릇에 빠트렸는데, 그 맛이 놀랄 만큼 맛있자 비싼 춘장 대신 고추장에 떡을 버무려 매콤한 떡볶이를 만들어 팔기 시작했다고 한다. 이후 떡볶이는 1970년대 들어서 전 국민의 간식으로 이 거리에서 성행했다.
Ma Bok-rim, known as the mother of tteokbokki (rice cakes in red chili sauce), opened her first restaurant here in 1953. They say Ma accidentally dropped a rice cake into a bowl of jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) at her Chinese restaurant, and it tasted so good that she decided to open a new restaurant selling tteokbokki, rice cakes mixed with red chili paste rather than expensive black bean paste. Tteokbokki became the country’s favorite snack in the 1970s, and similar shops took over the street.

신당동 일대가 뉴트로 트렌드를 타고 핫 플레이스로 떠올랐다. 신당역 1번 출구와 12번 출구 사이에 있는 이 골목이 최근 ‘힙당동’이란 해시태그로 SNS를 채우고 있다. 이곳엔 개성 있는 숍들이 들어섰는데 베이커리 ‘심세정’과 양곡창고를 개조한 카페 ‘아포테케리’, 점집으로 외관을 꾸민 칵테일 바 ‘주신당’, 알곤이 칼국수로 유명한 ‘하니칼국수’ 등이 유명하다. 최근에는 미국의 빈티지 마켓 콘셉트의 편집 숍 ‘핍스 마트’의 오픈으로 더욱 힙한 무드를 장착했다.
Sindang-dong used to be home to granaries stockpiling rice but has ridden the “newtro” (“new” plus “retro”) trend to emerge as a hot place with the nickname Hipdang-dong. Located between exits 1 and 12 of Sindang Station, it has recently taken over social media. Unique shops have replaced the warehouses including bakery Simsejeong, Kafe Apothecary and cocktail bar Zoo Sindang. Phyps Mart, a trendy supermarket modeled after a vintage American market, has further increased the neighborhood’s hipness quotient.

Korea’s first craft-centered arcade, Sindang Creative Arcade is located below Seoul Jungang Market. Stretching for 390m, it houses workshops, small studios, exhibition rooms and collaborative spaces, as well as an art market, community room and photo studio. To support the artists, various programs are held throughout the year, including artist-in-residence exhibitions and artist talks. Sindang Creative Arcade also offers craft classes and pop-up stores.

신당동의 트렌드를 이끄는 곳은 아이러니하게도 평범한 재래시장이던 서울중앙시장이다. 파급력이 큰 대형 유튜버들이 시장을 연달아 방문하고 젊은 손님이 몰리기 시작하면서 ‘옥경이네건생선’이나 ‘포25’ 같은 힙한 분위기의 노포들이 젊은 관광객을 모으고 있다. 서울중앙시장에서는 웬만한 식료품과 생활필수품을 다 구할 수 있는데, 특히 닭과 돼지의 부산물은 이곳의 특산물로 꼽힐 정도로 유명하다.
Leading the trends in Sindang-dong is what was once an ordinary traditional market, Seoul Jungang Market. With top YouTube influencers visiting regularly, young people have started to flock to establishments with a trendy vibe such as Okgyeonginae Dried Fish and Pho 25. The woven wires running along the arched ceiling add to the character of the market, where you can find almost any food product or daily necessity.

The plot of land in Seoul’s Songhyeon-dong neighborhood, which is adjacent to the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA Seoul), has been transformed into a large park. At the newly opened Songhyeon Green Plaza, visitors can see gorgeous seasonal flowers during the day as well as subtle lighting displays in the evening. MMCA Seoul is currently running a number of exhibitions including MMCA Lee Kun-hee Collection: LEE JUNG SEOP and Lim Ok-sang: Here, the Rising Land.

세종문화회관은 한국 공연예술의 등용문이자 과거부터 지금까지 한국 순수예술의 요람으로 자리매김한 곳이다. 인접한 광화문광장의 개장과 연계해 서울을 대표하는 ‘차세대 감성 문화 플랫폼’으로 전면 새 단장 중이다. 지난해 여름엔 광장을 찾는 시민 누구나 감상할 수 있는 세계적 수준의 미디어아트를 전시하기도 했다. 새로 지을 공연장 외벽에는 공연 실황을 누구나 실시간 무료로 관람할 수 있도록 대형 미디어파사드 시스템을 조성할 예정이다.
The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is the gateway to the performing arts in Korea and has been the focal point for Korean art since its inception. Currently, it is looking to embrace the contemporary. Last summer, the center projected media art onto its facade for visitors to Gwanghwamun Square. There are plans to install a large screen to the exterior during renovation work so that anyone can watch live theater performances for free.

1950년 아시아 최초의 국립극장으로 설립된 서울 남산의 국립극장은 한국의 전통예술, 발레, 오페라 등 다양한 공연을 선보이는 장소다. 본관 해오름극장은 2021년 3년 반 동안의 리모델링을 완료해 더욱 쾌적하고 현대화된 시설로 관람객을 맞고 있다. 특히 문화광장에서 해오름극장 로비로 이어지던 높은 돌계단을 없애 개방성과 접근성을 높였다. 국립오페라단, 국립합창단, 국립심포니오케스트라 등의 새해 기념 공연이 예정돼 있다.
Located on Namsan Mountain in Seoul, the National Theater of Korea was founded in 1950 as the first nationally managed theater in Asia. It hosts a variety of performances including traditional Korean ballet and opera. The Haeoreum Grand Theater, the main building, reopened in 2021 to welcome audiences to the newly renovated facility. Upcoming shows include performances by the National Choir and National Symphony Orchestra.

드라마 <오징어 게임> 첫 장면에서 이정재는 낡은 속옷을 입고 밥상 앞에 앉아 엄마에게 푼돈을 조르는 중년 남자로 등장한다. 대부분의 외국 시청자는 이정재를 그 모습으로 처음 만났겠지만 한국 시청자에게는 꽤 낯선 행색이었다.
In the opening scene of the smash hit streaming series Squid Game, we see Lee Jung-jae as a middle-aged man in old underwear, sitting at a table and pestering his mother for pocket money. For most international viewers, this may have been their first time seeing Lee, but for Korean viewers, this was a jarring sight.

That's becase Lee is known as an elegant actor with an impeccable sense of style. However, in Squid Game, he donned a teal track suit to become Seong Gi-hun, a character full of flaws. With this role, Lee was nominated for multiple awards and became the first Asian actor to win the Emmy award for best actor. Following his debut in 1993, Lee became a heartthrob, capturing the hearts of young girls with his youthful good looks. His first leading role was in The Young Man (1994), which became a cult film among Korea’s Gen X. In City of the Rising Sun (1999), another iconic film from his youth, he plays a young man dreaming of wealth, against the backdrop of Seoul’s Gangnam area. Top directors at the time were eager to cast Lee, and during the early stages of his career he starred in romance films such as Il Mare (2000), where he plays an architect who experiences a love that transcends time. Lee’s formative period began when he shed his youthful image and took on heavier, more mature roles in films such as The Thieves (2012) and New World (2013). In the latter, Lee plays an undercover cop who infiltrates a huge crime organization and climbs his way to the top. With his role as a charismatic villainous prince in The Face Reader (2013), Lee outshined the lead actor and developed a presence and style of his own for any role he played.

Films with multilayered stories set across a wide variety of time periods and locales gradually became his specialty. In Assassination (2015), the stains of Korean history are condensed into the character Yeom Seok-jin, a cowardly traitor, while in Operation Chromite (2016), Jang Hak-soo puts his life on the line to save Korea. The powerhouse who takes advantage of others to climb the ladder in the TV series Chief of Staff (2019) drops to the bottom of the social ladder and becomes the disadvantaged weakling in Squid Game. Always seeking out unexplored characters when choosing a script, Lee moves between good and evil roles and never stops exploring, an approach which naturally led him to directing. Fulfilling his desire to play a role in a spy film, Lee spent four years refining the script and then directing Hunt (2022), which was applauded after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The protagonist, played by Lee, may be his most complex character yet, and his next stop is Hollywood. Before Squid Game’s second season comes out, we’ll see him in the Star Wars series, The Acolyte, made for the streaming platform Disney+. Lee’s long-continuing character game is still in motion, and we haven’t seen all of him yet.

몇 년 전 박찬욱 감독의 <아가씨>를 111번이나 본 관객의 티켓 인증 사진이 올라와 화제가 된 적이 있다. 한 영화를 반복해서 관람하는 행위를 ‘N차 관람’이라고 부른다. 원래부터 있던 영화 관람 문화 중 하나라는 뜻이다. 2022년엔 N차 관람이 유독 새로운 현상처럼 주목받았다. 그 흐름을 만든 작품이 있다. 영화 <헤어질 결심>이다. ‘헤친자(<헤어질 결심>에 미친 자)’라는 신조어까지 양산할 정도로 이 작품에서 헤어나지 못한 관객이 꽤 많다. CGV 데이터전략팀이 공개한 자료에 따르면 영화가 개봉하고 한 달 가까이 지난 7월경 집계된 N차 관람 비율에서 <헤어질 결심>은 4.7%의 재관람률을 기록했다. 사실 이 숫자는 비슷한 시기에 개봉한 N차 관람 영화로 꼽히는 타 영화의 재관람률을 압도하는 결과는 아니다. 톰 크루즈의 화려한 귀환으로 화제가 된 <탑건: 매버릭>의 재관람 비율은 6.1%였다. 단, <탑건: 매버릭>이 800만 명 이상의 관객을 동원한 반면 <헤어질 결심>이 동원한 관객 수는 상대적으로 적은 189만 명 수준이었다.
Several years ago, a moviegoer caused a stir by posting a photograph proving that he’d watched Park Chan-wook’s film The Handmaiden (2016) 111 times. The act of viewing the same film multiple times, sometimes referred to as “nth time watching,” appears to have always been a part of movie culture. But in 2022, rewatching a film multiple times was brought into the spotlight. The film that created this trend in Korea was Decision to Leave (2022), also directed by Park. The number of people unable to pull themselves away from this movie resulted in the coinage of the Korean word hechinja (an abbreviation for a “person who is crazy about Decision to Leave”). According to data from CGV Entertainment, repeat viewers accounted for 4.7% of all tickets sold for Decision to Leave in figures collated in July, around a month after the film’s release. This number is actually not much higher than those for other “nth time watching” movies that opened around the same time. For Top Gun: Maverick (2022), the rate was 6.1%. However, while this sequel to Top Gun (1986) drew a total audience of more than 8 million in Korea, only 1.8 million saw Decision to Leave.
누적 관객 수와는 별도로 <헤어질 결심>의 존재감은 여타의 영화를 압도했다. 헤친자들은 극장 밖에서도 자신이 사랑하는 영화의 존재감을 높이는 데 일조했다. 특히 SNS를 비롯한 인터넷 커뮤니티에서는 <헤어질 결심>의 대사를 패러디하는 ‘밈’ 현상이 한동안 풍년이었다. “마침내”, “내가 그렇게 만만합니까?” 그리고 “내가 그렇게 나쁩니까?” 같은 유명한 대사들이 다양한 방식으로 변주되고 전시됐다. 영화를 보지 않은 사람도 웬만한 대사는 외울 정도였다. 헤친자들이 ‘드립 칠 결심’만 한 건 아니었다. 영화 개봉 후 두 달여 만에 출간된 <헤어질 결심 각본>은 종합 베스트셀러 1위에 올랐다. 각본집으로서는 초유의 상황이었다. 심지어 온라인 서점의 한 줄 평에는 역시 <헤어질 결심>의 대사를 패러디한 문장들이 융단 폭격하듯 쏟아졌다. 결국 이 신드롬은 ‘애정’에서 비롯된 현상이다. 충성심 높은 관객들이 벌이는 일종의 자족적 놀이에 가깝다. 누가 시킨 것도 아니고, 달리 명예가 따르는 것도 아니지만 그저 즐기며 영화를 거듭 관람한다. 첫 관람에선 인지하지 못했던 대사와 장면의 디테일을 하나하나 흡수하며 자신의 것인 양 소화해버린다. 이런 문화는 영화광, 그러니까 ‘시네필’만의 유희가 아니다.
But leaving audience numbers aside, the impact of Decision to Leave has left other films in the dust. Even outside of cinemas, hechinja has contributed to boosting the profile of Park’s most recent work. In particular, internet communities, including social media users, have found themselves inundated with memes parodying the dialogue in the film. Notable lines such as “Do I look that easy?” and “Am I really that bad?” have been twisted and repackaged in all sorts of ways. This has been enough to familiarize even people who haven’t seen the film with the memorable lines. And hechinja has had other results, too. The Decision to Leave Script Book, released two months after the film premiered, has become a No. 1 bestseller. This is unprecedented for a screenplay, and even the comments sections of online bookstores have been bombarded with parodies of the film’s dialogue. This behavior ultimately stems from affection. It’s a sort of self-contained game played among highly loyal fans of the movie. No one told these fans to act in this way, and they gain no glory from doing so. They simply enjoy watching the film multiple times. Fans absorb the details of scenes they may have missed on the first viewing, digesting them over time. And this sort of thing is not limited to so-called cinephiles.
N차 관람은 독립영화나 예술영화, 상업영화의 경계를 막론하고 벌어지는 팬덤 현상에 가깝다. 일찍이 ‘벌새단’이라는 서포터스까지 활약하며 N차 관람 영화로 떠올랐던 <벌새> 같은 독립영화도, 최근 독특한 화술과 문법으로 해석 본능을 일깨우는 영화로 입소문을 탄 <에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스> 같은 예술영화도, 보기 드물게 극장에서 떼창을 하며 관람할 수 있는 싱어롱 상영 문화를 만든 <보헤미안 랩소디> 같은 상업영화도 N차 관람이라는 팬덤 현상을 통해 대단한 화제를 일으켰다. 최근에는 영화의 규모를 막론하고 N차 관람이라는 말을 마케팅이나 홍보 수단으로 동원하는 추세가 어느 때보다 뚜렷하다. 코로나19 팬데믹 이후로 급감한 극장 관객 수가 좀처럼 회복되지 않는 상황에서 한 명의 관객이라도 극장으로 불러들이기 위해 출연 배우들이 장기간 무대인사나 관객과 대화 등 극장 내 마케팅 활동에 적극적인 것도 그런 까닭에서다. 영화를 봤지만 좋아하는 배우나 감독을 만나기 위해 다시 티켓을 사는 관객들의 심리에 최대한 부응하겠다는 움직임은 그만큼 회생에 대한 영화계의 염원이 간절하다는 것을 체감하게 한다.
Watching a film multiple times is what fandoms do, and fandoms can coalesce around independent, arthouse and typical commercial films. Movies belonging to different genres have become hot topics through fandoms known as “nth time viewers,” including independent films such as House of Hummingbird (2018), which rose to prominence through supporters known as the “hummingbird crew”; arthouse films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), which was rumored to awaken an “interpretive instinct” due to its unique style; and even commercial blockbusters such as Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), which created a unique singalong culture, with audiences belting out the songs together in theaters. Recently, the term “nth time viewing” started being employed as a marketing tool for films on all levels. Given that audience numbers in theaters have failed to bounce back after plummeting during the COVID-19 pandemic, this explains why actors are actively involved in cinema marketing, including conversations with audiences, in order to get viewers through the door. This drive to attract viewers who already saw the film but will buy another ticket for the chance to meet the actors or director shows how desperate the film industry is for a revival.
‘좋아하는 영화를 극장에서 보는 일’을 중단할 수 없는 관객들의 열정과 애정은 특별한 일이다. 다만 그러한 열정과 애정에 당장 기대를 걸어야 하는 영화계의 사정은 길게 내다봤을 때 긍정적인 신호만은 아니다. 극장의 위기는 언젠가 영화의 위기로 돌아온다. 결국 팬데믹 이전 수준만큼 영화관으로 사람들의 발길을 끌어당기지 못한다면 N차 관람을 부르는 영화의 가능성도 희박해질 수밖에 없을 것이다. 그런 점에서 N차 관람이 부각된다는 건 영화계의 위기를 대변하는 현상이기도 하겠지만, 동시에 영화계를 위한 희망의 보루이기도 하다. “영화는 돌아올 것”이라고 말한 봉준호 감독의 희망도 결국 영화를 사랑하는 이들과 함께 실현될 것이기에, 영화를 향한 순수한 애정을 느끼게 만드는 N차 관람은 그 자체로 일말의 희망이다.
The love and passion of fans who simply have to see their favorite films in theaters is something special. However, from the long-term perspective of the industry, being forced to pin your hopes on this passion and affection is far from positive. The crisis facing cinemas will eventually prove to be a crisis for film. If the industry ultimately fails to see viewership numbers return to prepandemic levels, the chance of new films coming out that will earn the “nth time” moniker is very low. In this sense, one could say the prominence of “nth time watching” culture speaks to the crisis in the film industry, but at the same time it’s also a bastion of hope. Director Bong Joon-ho’s assertion that movies “will come back” will ultimately depend on the habits and actions of movie-lovers, so “nth time viewership” and the pure feeling of love it creates toward films still represents a glimmer of hope for the industry.
수백 년의 시간을 거슬러 말총 공예라는 전통의 편린을 현재에 당도시킨 정다혜의 작품은 ‘성실의 시간’이라 불린다. 작업자로서의 그의 지난날과도 꼭 맞는 이름이다.
The work of Dahye Jeong revives the old Korean tradition of horsehair craft. Her most acclaimed creation is called A Time of Sincerity, which happens to be a perfect way to describe the time she dedicated to creating it.

지난 해 5회를 맞은 로에베 재단 공예상에서 처음으로 한국인의 이름이 호명되었다. 총 116개국 3100명의 작가 중에서 거머쥔 쾌거다. 다양한 국적을 가진 심사 위원들은 한목소리로 수상작에 대해 섬세한 완성도로 전통을 되살렸다고 극찬했다. 수상의 주인공인 정다혜 작가는 우리나라 사람들에게조차 생소한 말총으로 자신만의 작업을 지속해왔다. 말의 갈기와 꼬리털을 뜻하는 말총은 조선시대까지만 해도 엮어서 머리에 쓰는 탕건이나 망건을 만드는 게 보편적이었다. 단발령이 시행되면서 500년 동안 이어진 이 전통은 단숨에 맥이 끊겼다. 정다혜 작가는 학생 시절 스치듯 말총 공예와 만났다. 그리고 크나큰 사명이나 운명이 아닌 배움의 연장선으로 이 미지의 공예에 발을 내디뎠다.
정다혜는 우리나라에서 말총 공예를 기반으로 작품 활동을 하는 유일한 작가다.Last June, the winner of the fifth Loewe Foundation Craft Prize was announced — and for the first time, the award went to a Korean. Coming out on top among 3,100 artists from 116 countries was a tremendous achievement. Judges from various countries praised the delicacy of the winning piece, A Time of Sincerity. Dahye Jeong, the award recipient, is a skilled practitioner in the tradition of horsehair craft, a craft unfamiliar even to most Koreans, and creates artwork with her own unique style. Up until the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), horsehair from the manes and tails of horses was used extensively, woven into headwear known as tanggeon (horsehair hats) and manggeon (horsehair headbands).
“대학에서 조소를 전공하고 대학원에 들어가 섬유를 공부했어요. 나만의 분야를 찾을까 싶어 새롭게 문을 두드렸는데 이미 전문가 수준으로 직조하는 사람들이 많았죠. 그때 학교 연계 프로그램을 통해 말총 공예를 알게 됐고, 말총이 실 같은 모양새지만 탄성을 이용해 입체적으로 표현할 수 있다는 점에 강한 매력을 느꼈어요.”
얇디얇은 말총을 나무 틀에 감아 올려 모양을 만들고 열을 가하면 스스로 형체를 유지한 채 우뚝 선다. 섬유의 범주이면서 자르고 이어 붙이지 않아도 어떤 모양이든 만들어내는 일필휘지의 쾌감이 있다. 위세 있는 글씨 한 자를 쓰기 위해 먹을 곱게 갈고 붓에 힘을 싣는 절도가 필요한 것처럼 말총 공예도 뿌리부터 끝까지 굵기가 균일하고 표면이 고른 말총을 고르는 일부터가 시작이다. 말총이 엮여 면이 되기에 무늬를 넣으면 마치 벽돌을 쌓아 올린 것처럼 견고해진다. 무늬를 채우는 일은 단단함을 위해서지만 전통을 잇는 과정이기도 하다.
“다른 공예에 비해 자료가 너무 적어 잔존하는 유물을 찾는 일이 제 작업에서는 굉장히 중요합니다. 많은 공예품이 그렇듯 말총 공예도 탄생 초기에는 화려한 무늬를 간직하다 보급되면서 점점 단순해지는 경향을 보여요. 조선 중기 유물은 이제 서너 점밖에 없는데 그중 모자 하나를 본 적이 있어요. 각 면마다 다른 무늬로 채워져 있었죠. 무늬끼리 지그재그로 엮여 서로 힘을 받쳐주고 튼튼하고 아름답기까지 하다니. 그때 전통의 지혜와 역사성을 현재의 내 작품에 끌어오기로 마음먹었어요.”
With the implementation of danballyeong, a law prohibiting traditional topknots and mandating Western hair styles, this 500-year tradition was extinguished in an instant. Jeong stumbled across this craft as a student. And what led her as she took her first steps into the art world was not some great calling or fate, but simply the desire to continue learning.
“I majored in sculpture at university and studied textiles in graduate school,” she says. “I was looking for an area of expertise, but there were already many expert weavers. That’s when I came across horsehair craft through a school-affiliated program and I felt strongly drawn to horsehair, which is similar to thread but can be used to create three-dimensional structures thanks to its elasticity.”
Horsehair is wound around a wooden frame to form a shape, and when heated, it can retain the shape and stand on its own. There is something pleasant about the fact that, although it’s technically a fiber, you can shape horsehair into any form in one fluid stroke. The woven horsehair becomes a fabric and when patterns are added it becomes as solid as stacked bricks. Creating the patterns is necessary to add firmness, but it’s also a way of connecting to Korean traditions.
이제는 말총 공예를 전수할 수 있는 망건장과 탕건장도 몇 남아 있지 않다. 현대성을 접목해 작업하는 이는 오직 정다혜 작가뿐이다. 말총 공예를 처음 접한 후 지난 몇 년간 홀로 입지를 다지기 위해 모빌과 장신구를 만들어 문턱을 낮추었고, 대중의 이목을 끌기 위해 펀딩을 열기도 했다. 그리고 마지막이라는 생각으로 효용보다 미감을 중심에 두고 완성한 작품이 끝내 수상이라는 화답을 받았다.
“성인이 되어 하루하루 최선을 다하지 않으면 어딘가 도달하기가 어렵다는 걸 더욱 크게 느끼기 시작했어요. 진짜 내 작품을 만들겠다고 결심하고 나서는 가만히 앉아 말총을 짜는 시간이 오히려 수행 같아 위안이 되었죠. 입체 하나를 완성하는 게 크게 보면 내 삶 같기도 해서 투영을 많이 하기도 했고요. 사람들에게도 별것 아닌 하루가 쌓여 결과물을 낸다는 메시지를 전하고 싶었던 것 같아요.”
그렇게 만들어진 작품은 둥그렇고 넉넉한 품속에 투명하고 첨예한 아름다움이 녹아 있다. 최선을 다하는 하루는 작품의 일부와 같아서 정다혜 작가는 쏟아지는 스포트라이트에도 흔들리지 않고 매일 성실하게 말총을 짠다. 올해 5월에 열릴 첫 개인전을 위해서다. 그의 새로운 시간은 이미 시작됐다.
“For my work, it’s very important to find surviving horsehair pieces from the past,” Jeong explains. “Like many crafts, horsehair craft was treasured at the beginning and had extravagant patterns, but it became simpler as it proliferated. There are only three or four works left from the mid-Joseon period, but I’ve seen one of these — a hat. Each side is fully covered with a different pattern. The patterns zigzag across each other, so it’s both sturdy and beautiful. It inspired me to bring the wisdom and history of this tradition into my work.”
Now, there are very few left who can pass down horsehair craft. And only Jeong combines this craft with a modern flair. After encountering horsehair craft for the first time, she worked alone for several years to establish a foothold, making objects like mobiles and accessories. Finally, after completing the work that she thought would be her last, this time focusing on aesthetics rather than usefulness, she has been recognized with a prestigious award.
“I’m starting to feel even more strongly that it’s hard to achieve something if I don’t do my best every day,” Jeong admits. “After I decided to make my own artwork, the time I spent sitting still, weaving the horsehair was like a kind of meditation that actually came to be rather comforting. Completing one structure was, on a bigger scale, like looking at my own life, so I did a lot of reflecting, too. I think I wanted to send people the message that a single day might not seem like much, but stacked up, these single days produce results.”
The piece made in this way is semi-transparent and strikingly beautiful. Jeong hasn’t been swayed by the attention and continues to spend each day diligently. She’s working on her first solo exhibition, which will be held in May of this year. Her time has just begun.

The movie is based on the concept that parallel universes exist. The plot is centered on Chinese American immigrant Evelyn Wang (played by Michelle Yeoh), who one day learns about the existence of alternate universes from an “alternate husband,” Waymond (played by Ke Huy Quan). Before this, Evelyn was living a normal life with her daughter, Joy (played by Stephanie Hsu), and dealing with everyday problems such as family disputes, her failing business, a tax audit and low motivation. But after realizing the existence of her alternate selves, she goes to great lengths to “verse-jump” (linking her consciousness to another version of herself in a different universe) so that she can meet each and every one of them. In the process, she eventually comes to the realization that she is the one responsible for all their lives and that the multiverse exists within her. Packed with homages and parodies, the movie follows a one-of-a-kind 139-minute cinematic journey where Evelyn manages to reconcile with herself and the world she lives in.

Billions is a television drama series about a game of cat-and-mouse between a billionaire hedge fund manager, who uses any means at his disposal to produce the largest returns possible, and a cunning U.S. attorney. BTS를 잇는 K-팝 아이돌로 주목받는 스트레이 키즈가 새 미니앨범 <MAXIDENT>로 빌보드를 점령했다. 지난해 3월 발매한 앨범 <ODDINARY>로 ‘빌보드 200’ 깜짝 1위에 등극한 스트레이 키즈는 <MAXIDENT>로 2연속 ‘빌보드 200’과 ‘아티스트 100’ 정상을 동시 석권했다. 앨범의 모든 타이틀곡을 만든 그룹 내 프로듀싱 팀 쓰리라차(3RACHA, 방찬·창빈·한)를 중심으로 멤버 전원이 신보 크레디트에 이름을 올렸다.

Rock band Jannabi is currently seeing an exciting increase in its popularity, sending the band into the mainstream. The motif behind the self-produced band’s unique, experimental music, is regularly described by the band as "our passionate summer nights ... songs that are not just hip and cool.” Those who want to sample the band’s music should listen to The Land of Fantasy, released in 2021, and Grippin’ the Green, released in May 2022.
크루 DPR 소속의 래퍼 디피알 라이브는 정규 1집 <IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?>를 비롯해 <IITE COOL>, 가장 최근 발매된 <Set It Off>를 통해 밝은 분위기의 중독성 넘치는 곡부터 어둡고 진지한 곡까지 넓은 스펙트럼을 증명해내고 있다. 그는 자신의 앨범을 “예술적인 그림을 오롯이 담아내는 캔버스로 삼고 싶다”고 말했는데, 실제로 그의 음악을 듣다 보면 디피알 라이브만이 가능한 장르를 만들어가는 것을 알 수 있다.
Rapper DPR Live, a member of the DPR crew, is one of the few artists in the Korean hip-hop scene who has made it to the top without doing TV appearances. On his full-length album IS ANYBODY OUT THERE? and EPs IITE COOL and Set It Off, he shows his versatility. Some of his songs are upbeat and catchy while others are dark and heavy. He said he intended for this full-length album to be “a blank canvas for his artistic paintings.”

대한항공이 새로운 항공기 에어버스 A321 네오를 선보였다. 프레스티지 8석, 이코노미 174석으로 총 182석을 지녔다. 기내 복도가 하나인 단일 통로 협동체로 동남아, 중국, 일본 등 단거리 노선에 주로 투입될 예정이다. A321 네오 프레스티지석에는 단거리 비행 중에도 두 다리 쭉 뻗고 누워서 갈 수 있도록 국내 항공사 최초로 180˚ 펼쳐지는 좌석을 배치했다. 이를 통해 미주와 유럽 등 장거리 노선을 갔다가 동남아나 중국, 일본 등 단거리 노선으로 환승하는 승객들이 끊김없이 ‘완전 평면 좌석’을 이용할 수 있게 됐다.
Korean Air has begun operating its new Airbus A321neo, which offers 182 seats — eight in Prestige and 174 in Economy classes. The A321neo is a single-aisle aircraft that will mainly fly short-haul routes to Southeast Asia, China and Japan. Prestige Class is the first on a Korean airline to offer fully lie-flat seating on short haul flights, so long-haul passengers flying from the U.S. and Europe who transfer to these will be able to continue their journey in comfort. This has increased Korean Air's competitiveness as a transfer airline.
또한 44cm 크기의 주문형오디오비디오(AVOD) 모니터와 좌석 팔걸이 부분에 휴대전화 무선 충전이 가능한 장치를 설치해 편리함을 더했다. 프레스티지석은 조각보에서 영감을 받은 패턴을 적용했으며, 다크 그레이와 골드 색상을 사용해 고급스러운 분위기를 더했다. 또 8개의 침대형 좌석을 사선으로 배치해서 공간 효율성도 높였다.
이코노미석에서는 기존보다 10cm 더 커진 33cm의 개인용 모니터로 기내 엔터테인먼트 시스템을 즐길 수 있다. 다양한 방향으로 조절할 수 있는 머리 받침대와 좌석마다 설치된 개인 옷걸이로 편안함도 더했다.
대한항공 A321 네오에는 아시아 지역 항공사 최초로 에어버스의 객실 인테리어 브랜드 ‘에어스페이스’가 적용됐다. 보딩 시 탑승을 환영하는 분위기를 만드는 조명과 순항, 식사 등 비행 단계에 따라 각기 다른 색을 낼 수 있는 조명 시스템이 특징이다. 더 넓어진 창문 덮개는 탁 트인 시야를 제공하고 휴대 수하물을 보관할 수 있는 기내 선반의 크기도 기존보다 40% 넓어졌다. 특히 A321 네오에서는 대한항공 항공기 중 처음으로 기내 와이파이를 제공한다. 2023년 상반기부터 A321 네오의 모든 탑승객은 이용료를 결제한 후 기내 와이파이를 사용할 수 있다. 요금은 아직 확정되지 않았다. 대한항공은 A321 네오를 시작으로 향후 보잉 737-8 등 신규 도입 항공기를 중심으로 기내 와이파이 서비스를 확대해나갈 예정이다.
대한항공의 이번 A321 네오 도입은 안전을 위한 항공기 투자의 일환이다. 대한항공은 A321 네오의 항공기 보유 대수를 2027년까지 30대로 늘릴 계획이라고 밝혔다. 이를 포함해 보잉 787-9 10대, 보잉 787-10 20대, 보잉 737-8 30대 등 2028년까지 총 90대의 신형기를 도입하는 한편, A330 6대, 보잉 777-200ER 6대 등은 순차 퇴역시켜 보유 항공기 현대화에 적극 나설 계획이라고 밝혔다.
Prestige Class also has 44cm audio/video-on-demand monitors and armrests capable of wireless mobile phone charging, making the flights a more convenient choice. Prestige seats are decorated in a luxurious dark gray and gold pattern, and are arranged diagonally to provide extra space.
Passengers in Economy Class can enjoy in-flight entertainment on a 33cm personal monitor, 10cm bigger than those on previous aircraft. Each seat has an adjustable headrest and a personal hanger, and is decorated with a vivid pattern woven through the fabric.
Korean Air's A321neo offers Airbus's interior brand "Airspace," a first for an Asian airline. It features a lighting system that creates a welcoming atmosphere, and changes color to indicate what stage the flight is in. Wider window shades provide an open view, and the clean, well-lit restrooms have an antibacterial coating to prevent the spread of disease. Overhead storage bins are also 40% larger than those on previous A321neo models. In addition, the A321neo will be the first Korean Air aircraft to offer in-flight Wi-Fi services for a fee starting from the first half of the year. Korean Air plans to expand Wi-Fi services beginning with its newly introduced aircraft, including the Boeing 737-8.
The introduction of the A321neo is part of an overall investment in aircraft safety. Korean Air said it plans to increase the number of A321neos in its fleet to 30 by 2027. In addition, a total of 90 new aircraft, including 10 Boeing 787-9s, 20 Boeing 787-10s and 30 Boeing 737-8s, will be introduced by the end of 2028. Six A330s and six Boeing 777-200ERs will be retired sequentially as part of the airline’s active modernization of its fleet.
