The Korean Air Women’s Table Tennis Team, the oldest table tennis team in Korea, will continue their fierce smashing not
only in international competitions, but also in the Korea Table Tennis League (KTTL), which was launched last year.
Founded in 1973, Korean Air’s female table tennis team has performed well over the years, with athletes medaling at
three consecutive Olympic Games — in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).
The Korean Air team took third place at the inaugural KTTL in 2022. As of February 17, they ranked fourth in the league.
Captain Lee Eun-hye and senior player Kim Ha-yeong are fourth and sixth in the individual rankings, respectively, and
lead a robust supporting squad consisting of Lee Yu-jin, Shin Yu-bin, Kang Ga-yun and Jung Eun-song, as well as
newcomers Park Ga-hyeon, Lee Seung-eun and Choi Ye-seo, all sporting the Korean Air uniform for the first time this
year.
A player to watch is prodigy Shin Yu-bin, ranked 19th in the world. She recently returned from injury and secured yet
another qualifying victory in women’s singles with a come-from-behind win in a tight match at the Group 1 Finals in
Doha, Qatar. As a result, Shin is eligible to compete in every event of the World Table Tennis Championships.
“As a member of the Korean Air Women’s Table Tennis Team, I’m pleased with these good results,” she says. “I had two
surgeries and a long recovery period, but thanks to the strong support of my fans and Korean Air, who believed in me, I
was able to achieve satisfying results. I have a lot of overseas matches, and Korean Air’s support during my travels has
allowed me to be my best as an athlete. I hope to repay Korean Air for all they’ve done for me as my first pro team by
playing well for a long time.”
The Korean Air Women’s Table Tennis Team has a personalized training and support system for each player. This helped
Shin recover quickly after suffering a wrist injury during a 2021 tournament. For Lee Yu-jin, the fact that players
approach each match ready to jump in, whether they actually play or not, is the team’s unique strength.
