The Da Nang Fireworks Festival is back! Host country Vietnam will compete against teams from Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Italy, Poland and the UK. Starting June 2, two teams will go head-to-head for five weeks, with the finals on July 8. Each team’s 20-minute performance will tackle the theme of this year’s festival, A World Without Distance. Visitors can enjoy the festival along Da Nang’s Han River from a river cruise boat or in many other spots throughout the city.

거대한 예술품과도 같은 건축물이 베이징에 들어섰다. 자하 하디드의 유작 중 하나인 리자 소호다. 축을 뒤틀어 만든 곡선, 둥근 마감의 에지가 돋보이는 외관이 시선을 빼앗는 것도 잠시. 진짜 하이라이트는 내부 아트리움이다. 리자 소호의 거대한 아트리움은 높이 194.15m로 ‘세계에서 가장 높은 아트리움’이란 타이틀을 두바이 버즈 알 아랍 호텔에서 빼앗아왔다. 바닥에서 2개의 나눠진 건물로 시작해 아트리움을 사이에 두고 위에서 만나는 형태다.
A massive architectural masterpiece has been erected in Beijing. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, Leeza SOHO is an eye-catching work of art featuring twisted curves and rounded edges. The real highlight, however, is the inner atrium. Standing at a height of 194m, it has taken the title of the “world's tallest atrium” from the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. Straddling an underground subway service tunnel, the two halves of the building meet with the giant atrium in the middle, which runs the full height of the building.

The world’s first custom-built auction house stands on Wangfujing Street, near the Forbidden City. The Guardian Art Center is the work of German architect Ole Scheeren, known for co-designing the iconic China Central Television Headquarters. The open spaces throughout the building are particularly impressive as modern interpretations of Beijing’s traditional hutong courtyard houses. Designed as a hybrid space that combines art, culture and lifestyle, this cultural complex includes a 1,700m² column-free exhibition space, a restaurant overlooking the Forbidden City and the PuXuan Hotel and Spa.

Located in Dashanzi, the 798 Art Zone is the heart of the city’s arts and culture scene. Originally a 1950s military factory complex, the area is now an art district with museums, galleries, workshops and cafes. 챗GPT는 2022년 11월 미국의 스타트업 오픈AI가 출시한 인공지능 챗봇이다. GPT는 ‘Generative Pre-trained Transformer’의 약자로, 생성형 사전 학습 트랜스포머라는 의미다. 번역을 하거나 정보를 제공하고 수학 문제를 풀거나 에세이, 시를 쓸 수도 있다. 최근 여행사들도 저마다 엄청난 정보를 쏟아내는 인공지능 챗봇을 선보이고 있다. 트립닷컴은 자체 챗봇 서비스 트립젠을 론칭했고 롬어라운드나 베케이챗봇은 챗GPT 기반 서비스를 제공한다. 구글도 자체 챗봇 바드를 출시했고 내년까지 애플, 메타, 바이두, 아마존 등이 관련 상품을 쏟아낼 계획이다.
It’s 6 p.m. on a warm spring evening in Tbilisi, Georgia, and I’m dining on crispy khachapuri cheese bread (the national comfort food) and fragrant eggplant doused with walnut sauce in the shade of pomegranate trees. I’m at the much-loved traditional Georgian restaurant Shavi Lomi in old Tbilisi, recommended to me by AI chatbot ChatGPT for its “modern take on Georgian cuisine in a cozy and stylish atmosphere.”
Developed by artificial intelligence market leader OpenAI, ChatGPT was launched in November 2022. GPT stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer,” and the tool, which is designed to have human-like communication skills, has since been put through its paces as a language translator, customer service chatbot and poetry and essay author.
다시 조지아로 돌아가 보자. 나는 챗GPT가 추천한 레스토랑에 크게 만족했다. 이번엔 트빌리시에서 꼭 가봐야 할 곳을 추천해달라고 해봤다. 챗GPT는 내가 구시가지인 제벨리 트빌리시로 가 아늑한 카페나 숨겨진 정원을 발견해볼 것을 추천했다. 챗GPT의 안내대로 울창한 초목이 있는 트빌리시 식물원을 산책한 다음 피곤한 몸을 녹이기 위해 유황 온천에 들르기로 했다.
구불구불한 제벨리 트빌리시의 골목길은 챗GPT의 말처럼 평화롭고 아름다웠다. 나는 골목길을 산책하고 사진을 찍으며 행복한 시간을 보냈다. 하지만 식물원 입구에서 계획은 틀어졌다. 식물원은 봄 시즌 개장을 앞두고 휴관 중이었다. 당황한 나는 다시 챗GPT에게 물어봤지만, 엉뚱하게 미국 조지아주에 있는 식물원에 대한 답변만 계속 돌아왔다. 결과적으로 챗GPT가 안내한 이번 여행은 절반의 성공과 절반의 실패로 끝났다. 챗GPT는 여행지의 시즌별 운영시간 혹은 최근 일어난 변동 사항에 취약했다. 물론 이를 보완할 프로그램이 지금도 계속 생겨나고 있지만.
얼마 후 나는 <와이어드> 매거진의 테크놀로지 전문 기자 크리스 스토켈-워커를 만나 트빌리시 여행 경험담을 들려줬다. 내 이야기를 들은 그는 “인공지능 챗봇은 여행지의 방대한 정보를 검토하고 걸러내는 데 탁월해 뛰어난 여행 가이드가 될 수 있다”고 말하면서도 한 가지 문제점을 지적했다. 바로 허구성이다.
“그건 인공지능 챗봇의 근본적인 문제라고 봐요. 없는 정보를 만들어낼 수 있어요. 누군가 일주일간 다녀올 여행 계획을 세워달라고 할 때, 불가능한 것을 가능한 것처럼 말할지도 몰라요.”
나는 챗GPT에게 마지막 질문을 던졌다. “넌 여행 가이드를 대신할 수 있니?” 내 어리석은 질문에 챗GPT는 현명하게 답했다.
“인공지능 챗봇으로서 여행지 정보를 제공하고 질문에 답할 수 있어요. 그렇지만 안타깝게도 당신과 동행할 순 없답니다.”
Now travel companies are using the novel web-scouring technology to launch Travel AI apps such as Trip.com’s TripGen, the ChatGPT-powered Roam Around, and Vacay Chatbot (the latter teaching users how to prompt ChatGPT for the most accurate travel advice). In March, Google also entered the chatbot fray with its launch of Bard. Apple, Meta, Baidu and Amazon also have AI products due to hit the market in 2023 and 2024.
After that notable culinary success, I asked ChatGPT to recommend must-see attractions in Tbilisi. The screen froze. (This was a few days before a March malware attack shut ChatGPT down for 12 hours). I tried again and the bot went into hyperspeed.
“Discover,” it advised, the “cozy cafés” and “hidden courtyards” of Dzveli Tbilisi (old Tbilisi), stroll the “lush” National Botanical Garden of Georgia, then head to the Sulfur Baths, which are “said to have healing properties.” On ChatGPT’s advice, I spend a pleasant hour in the winding, photogenic alleyways of Dzveli Tbilisi. I soon found that the botanical garden was closed until the spring opening season. Asking ChatGPT for further advice resulted in a description of a botanical garden in the U.S. state of Georgia.
All in all, the experience was a mixed success. ChatGTP seems to struggle with current information, warning users of its “limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021.” At the same time, upgrades are constantly being made. To get some perspective on this, I asked technology author Chris Stokel-Walker for his thoughts. “AI can be fantastic in... wading through the vast volumes of information about a tourist destination... which should, on the face of it, make an AI-powered tourist guide brilliant,” he says. But, he adds, AI has one fundamental problem: hallucination. “It just makes stuff up. Which can be a problem if you’ve asked it to plan a seven-day itinerary.”
Open AI is continuously improving ChatGPT’s nascent technology, so one day tourists might turn to its staccato advisories, or to one of the other AI tools developed by Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta or Baidu as their first port of call in an unknown destination.

Natural wells or sinkholes known as cenotes were believed by the ancient Maya to be gates to the underworld. The Yucatán Peninsula is rumored to have over 6,000 cenotes, and many of them can be found around the cities of Bacalar and Valladolid.

2 Enjoy Yucatán Cuisine A marriage of Maya and Spanish traditions, Yucatán cuisine features dishes laden with habanero peppers. 3 Paint Mexican Mythical Creatures Alebrijes are paper mache, clay or wood carvings painted in immensely bright colors, each with rich symbolism. These figurines are considered Mexican spirit animals often taking the form of real or imaginary creatures. Learn about this Mexican folk art and paint your very own in Valladolid at Ik-Kan, an art collective that hosts workshops.

For around 2,600 years, newcomers have entered Marseille through the Vieux Port (Old Port). The historic harbor remains a city within a city with its own markets, culture and berths for up to 3,200 boats. It is an appropriate place for museums to showcase the region’s long history.
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (Mucem) houses various collections from ancient to modern cultures at three sites. Visitors can expect to see bowls from Ottoman Istanbul and silks from medieval Syria. There are also exhibits dedicated to France’s most diverse city, as migrants from Italy, Algeria, China, Vietnam and many other countries unite to become Marseillais. After working up an appetite, treat yourself to Le Môle Passedat, a collection of eateries by chef Gerald Passedat. There is an upscale rooftop restaurant and terrace, kiosks for a quick bite and a coffee shop.
Next to the Mucem, the Cosquer Méditerranée cave museum provides access to an underwater grotto discovered by a scuba diver in 1985. Explore the cave in special vehicles and take in nearly 500 prehistoric paintings.
Art has always been at the heart of Marseille. Just south of the port, the Musée Cantini describes a decadent age when the harbor still ruled the city. One of France’s greatest collections of early 20th-century art showcases works by Raoul Dufy, Joan Miró and Wassily Kandinsky. Canvases like L’entrée du port de Marseille by Paul Signac depict how tall ships brought big ideas from around the globe.
For architecture fans, a visit to La Cité Radieuse is a must, a towering block of 337 apartments that commands the Marseille skyline. Designed by world-famous architect Le Corbusier, the UNESCO-inscribed work of art is a self-contained concrete utopia with its own nursery, art museum and rooftop running track. The docks of Marseille have played a significant role in European cuisine. Dates entered the continent here. Most probably, tomatoes and bananas did too. So did the recipe for bouillabaisse. This seafood stew, synonymous with the city, was invented by fishermen who could not sell the bony rockfish they caught. Look out for dockside restaurants that adhere to the traditional recipe outlined in the Bouillabaisse Charter. It requires the inclusion of at least four types of local fish such as scorpion fish, red mullet, conger eel and John Dory.
Yet this international port remains inventive, bouillabaisse being a case in point. Restaurant Alcyone is home to the Milkshake de Bouillabaisse, crafted by Michelin-starred chef Lionel Levy. This concoction is a three-layered fish soup served in large glasses. Another city chef has introduced the Hamburger de Bouillabaisse, with a shot glass of fish soup to accompany it. Alexandre Mazzia won his third Michelin star in 2021. He is a chef who never sits still. Born in Congo, with Corsican and Italian heritage, his international flavors blend together at his gourmet restaurant AM. Mazzia’s latest idea is the Michel food truck featuring dishes from around $18 such as the Croq Mazz, a hot sandwich packed with hummus and barbecued vegetables. In 2024, Mazzia, along with chefs Amandine Chaignot and Akrame Benallal, will create dishes for over 10,000 global competitors at the Olympic Village.
Marseille’s most celebrated three-star chef, Gérald Passedat, usually serves seafood tasting menus priced around $300, but he has just created a $10 fish burger for L’Après M (a take on the phrase “After McDonald’s”). And Passedat’s protégé, Sandrine Sollier, oversees a new gourmet restaurant, Les Beaux Mets, run by rehabilitating prisoners inside the Baumettes Prison. Visitors from outside must make reservations four days in advance.

좀 더 특별한 액티비티를 경험하고 싶은 이에겐 ‘파쿠르’가 있다. 도심의 건축물과 지형, 사물 사이를 최대한 빠르게 달리며 공중제비로 뛰어넘고 구르는 익스트림스포츠를 뜻하는 이 곡예의 종주국이 바로 프랑스다. 마르세유의 파쿠르 클럽 ‘PK13’에선 초보자도 즐길 수 있는 다양한 클래스를 진행한다.
Paris won’t be the Olympic flame’s first stop in France. That honor goes to Marseille, which will host all 10 sailing events during the XXXIII Paris Olympiad. This summer, 330 competitive sailors will test the local breezes in front of thousands of cheering spectators. The most colorful competitors will be kitesurfers, as the event makes its Olympic debut.
Just inland from the marina sits the Orange Vélodrome Stadium, home to football club Olympique de Marseille. Olympique have won the French football league more times than any other club and take their name from the city’s Greek roots. During the 2024 Olympic Games, 10 soccer matches will kick off right here, with famous commentators and world champions in action. Regular visitors can partake in the action with a tour of the stadium with access to exclusive areas.
Just off Catalan Beach is an astounding new museum. The Underwater Museum of Marseille features pieces by Bruno Catalano, a Marseille-born artist who created Travelers, sculptures of people strolling with their luggage. This undersea sculpture park doubles as an artificial reef, attracting shellfish and algae, among a greater biodiversity. The museum is just a short swim from shore.
A final Marseille pastime is parkour, or freerunning. Here athletes swing, vault and roll through an urban area as swiftly as possible. The sport originated in France and found a home in Marseille, where stairways, parking lots and concrete bollards form obstacles to be traversed. Marseille was bombed during World War II and in the second half of the 20th century, it was ensnared by poverty as mafiosi diverted its reconstruction funds. The city gained a gritty reputation. Yet Marseille has glorious architecture, 300 days of annual sunshine and a hard-working populace. When Paris was a village, Marseille was a global trading hub, and Europe’s first Chamber of Commerce started right here. Today the city’s multiple languages facilitate exports to Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
The start-up scene is also multilingual, says Julien Fabre, a co-founder of the Grandes Halles du Vieux Port, a food market. “Our city has created a central crossroads,” he says, “a place of sharing where all ages and social classes feel at ease.” Diversity is key, not least at the market, where sushi is sold alongside Corsican groceries. “Tourists mix with locals; hipsters mix with families,” continues Fabre. “Social oxygen is the historic DNA of Marseille.”
Low housing costs have attracted a new breed of entrepreneurs from across France, and nearly one in ten new home buyers hail from Paris, a three-hour ride north on the high speed TGV train. Marseille’s newest creative industries embody the city’s spirit of sustainability. Atelier Poupe transforms old ship’s fenders into lamps and interior decorations, and Vista makes non-oil-based soccer balls. There’s also Koovee, which fabricates edible cutlery infused with southern French herbs.

Arles is the tranquil antidote to Marseille. This historic city is reached via a one hour rural rail ride. On arrival, honey-hued lanes hide cool cafés and cutting edge galleries. The scream of scooters, shoppers and Marseille’s nearly one million residents is left far behind.
Arles has been elegant since Julius Caesar established it as a Roman colony. Visitors can sip, stroll or sightsee in a Roman-era city center landmarked by a gigantic amphitheater. The stadium still seats over 20,000 guests: all the better to host summer concerts and DJ sets. For the most Instagrammable views over Arles’ UNESCO-protected center, climb the amphitheater’s three towers.
The views inspired generations of artists. Vincent Van Gogh immortalized the old town in his painting Café Terrace at Night. The café on the canvas is now named the Café Van Gogh. Visitors following in the footsteps of the great artist may pick up a Van Gogh walking map from the tourist office, which takes in many important sites around the city. Van Gogh’s contemporary Paul Gauguin also painted the city’s streets — at least until the two fiery artists argued, with the former slicing off his own ear, and the latter fleeing the bloody scene never to return. During the 20th century, Pablo Picasso followed the ghosts of Van Gogh and Gauguin through Arles. Picasso donated 57 drawings to the city, which are now housed in the Musée Reattu fine arts museum. The museum’s permanent collection highlights Arles-born artist Jacques Réattu.
Then, the 21st century gave rise to Luma, an experimental cultural center that challenges conceptions of art, culture and environment. Topped by a shimmering tower from star architect Frank Gehry, it was inaugurated in 2021. The tower’s twisting mirrors pay homage to Van Gogh, who splayed Provençal colors haphazardly on canvas. At sunset it shines pink and ochre, befitting Arles as a beacon to modern art.

보스턴은 미국의 역사와 문화가 깊게 배어 있는 도시다. 독립선언문이 이곳에서 발표됐고, 독립전쟁과 관련된 역사적인 장소를 여럿 지녔다. 동시에 하늘을 찌를 듯 높은 스카이라인도 있다. 붉은벽돌 건물과 울퉁불퉁한 자갈이 깔린 보도 위에 하늘 높이 우뚝 솟은 크레인의 모습은 보스턴에서 흔히 마주할 수 있는 풍경이다. 오래된 역사를 바탕으로 새로운 역사를 써 내려가고 있는 것이다. 바닷가에 위치해 하루에도 몇 번씩 흐렸다가 맑아지기를 반복하지만 솔솔 부는 바닷바람은 도시에 활기를 불어넣기에 충분하다. 이 도시에 외유내강이라는 개성을 입히는 것도 바로 이 변덕스러운 날씨와 예기치 못한 요소다.
Boston straddles the line between preserving its history and developing its future. Old haunts and pre-Revolutionary War relics stand next to an expanding skyline. Cranes reach into the sky above old brick buildings and cobblestone paths. These changes are reflected in the region’s weather. 보스턴의 여러 지역이 유기적으로 잘 어우러지지만 그중에서도 특별한 개성을 지닌 곳을 꼽자면 사우스엔드를 들 수 있다. 이곳에서 붉은벽돌로 상징되는 빅토리아시대 건축양식을 그대로 간직한 채 가장 잘 보존돼 있는 ‘로 하우스’를 만날 수 있다. 1950년대에 보스턴 헤럴드 신문사가 들어서기도 했던 곳이다. 이후 건물이 해체되면서 이 지역은 새로운 주거지역인 동시에 카페, 레스토랑, 브랜드 숍들이 자리한 상업지구 ‘잉크블록’으로 탈바꿈했다. 보스턴 사람들의 일상을 책임지는 레스토랑인 사우스엔드 버터리, 스페셜티 커피숍인 렌더 커피 등이 자리하며 생기 넘치는 지역이 됐다.
The modern history of South Boston is well-known thanks to the Oscar-winning movies Good Will Hunting and The Departed. Once an isolated part of the city, the area became connected to the rest of it when a construction project removed the highway barrier and made the neighborhood easily accessible. Today, South Boston and its waterfront Seaport District host the city’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and the renowned Boston Children’s Museum along with many art galleries. Also in abundance are world-class eateries such as Chickadee and breweries like Trillium Brewing Co. Right in the middle is Laugh Boston, one of the many clubs keeping the city’s comedy legacy alive. To the west, former industrial neighborhood Fort Point is also enjoying rejuvenation, largely due to its proximity to South Station, the New England Aquarium, the famed North End eateries and its view of the ocean.
Boston’s neighborhoods blend and meld into one another, but South End stands out. The charming area is known to have the largest Victorian row house district in the country. In the 1950s, part of the neighborhood was bulldozed to build several factories along with Boston Herald’s headquarters. The area was forgotten for some time, but the city reinvested in it after seeing its potential, and the neighborhood became a hub for creatives. The old Herald building was replaced by the Ink Block, an upscale apartment and shopping complex. South End is now a vibrant district, home to a host of parks, galleries, shops, restaurants and cafés like South End Buttery and Render Coffee.

In 1891, the world’s largest power plant at the time was built on the outskirts of South End to power the West End Street Railway. In 1912, the plant was decommissioned. Renovated in 2018, it now serves as a beautiful event center. Today, the area around the power plant is known as SoWa (South of Washington Street). Filled with restaurants, artist workshops, showrooms and fashion boutiques, it is a burgeoning art and design district.
“The South End has been evolving,” says abstract painter Nedret Andre, who has a studio in the area. “Where we're located, I feel like South End has got a little bit more momentum for bringing different people into the neighborhood, which I think is really great because I get to meet people from all over,” Andre explains. She moved to the vibrant neighborhood and found a community of fellow artists and a wealth of creative spaces. On Sundays from May to October, the SoWa Open Market features local artisans, farmers and food trucks. On the first Friday of each month, the artists in the area open their studio and gallery doors to the public for free. All of this has made it a melting pot of people coming not only from within the city and the region, but also the world. Visitors can pop into creative spaces like lifestyle boutique Stitch and Tickle or Clay Lounge, a pottery studio for people looking to get into the community or learn about working with clay. There’s also stores like Wyllo, which sells small batch goods sourced from women-owned brands.

Boston is not a running city, per se. Pretty views don’t come into focus downtown. It is, however, a beautiful city to watch runners cross the finish line of one of the world’s toughest and most famous races — the Boston Marathon. 싱가포르는 아시아에서 가장 친환경적인 도시로 알려져 있다. 실내에서 계단식 폭포가 떨어져 내리고 유리 돔 안에 열대우림이 펼쳐지는 것을 보면 마치 영화 <아바타> 세트장에 와 있는 듯한 착각이 들기도 한다. 창을 통해 내다보이는 푸르름을 자연적인 거라 생각할 수 있지만, 사실 이는 싱가포르가 여러 해 동안 시간을 들여 계획하고 한 치의 오차 없이 계획을 구현해낸 결과다.
Widely recognized as the greenest city in Asia, Singapore is often called a “city in a garden” instead of the other way round. With cascading indoor waterfalls and tropical rainforests, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re on the movie set of Avatar. But behind the seemingly natural view outside your window lie years of planning, strict implementation and an uncompromising futuristic vision.

Only 58 years after independence, Singapore is not only one of the most progressive and developed economies in the world, but also one of the greenest. This is integrated deeply into its blueprint. Skyscrapers have to comply with green standards, and its Green Plan 2030 will ensure there’s a park within 10 minutes from any residential area. Park connectors zigzag across the island, sky terraces are the norm, urban farms sprout up in unused car parks and school grounds, and vertical gardens are taken for granted. Expect to see trees growing on the 50th floor of buildings, or an unreal yet natural forest inside Jewel, at Changi Airport. Edible Garden City (EGC) has several urban farms across the island, including the 465m² rooftop garden at Funan Mall. Many varieties of fruits and vegetables, including eggplant, okra, basil, mint and lemongrass are grown here. Visit to see how a shopping mall can integrate a vital community space for gardeners. On Level 7 of Funan’s rooftop is NOKA, a Japanese restaurant that minimizes its carbon footprint by using produce grown in the rooftop garden. Make a reservation in advance and try their omakase menu.

This natural history museum located on the quiet campus of the National University of Singapore was awarded the Skyrise Greenery Award. Compact enough for a half-day excursion, it houses fascinating dinosaur fossils and a larger-than-life sperm whale exhibit. The museum’s exterior resembles a moss-covered rock, with part of its roof covered in more than 60 species of plants native to Singapore. Children will love exploring exhibits that replicate mangrove swamps and rainforests and showcase aquatic plants.

Iceland has an abundance of glacial-fed rivers. In Rangárping Eystra, a yellow-tinged river empties into the Atlantic Ocean, after passing over sulfur-rich sediment from nearby volcanic rocks and soil. The breathtaking display of colors and textures can be seen from a plane or by drone.

On the northern side of Padar Island is Pink Beach, which gets its color from a pigment found in foraminifera (microscopic organisms that house themselves within reddish-pink shells). Nearby is world famous Komodo Island, home to the Komodo dragon; it also has a pink beach.

A common way to explore Antarctica is by boat from South American ports like Ushuaia in Argentina. After crossing the Drake Passage, visitors can see icebergs the size of mountains off the coast of Enterprise Island. Further afield, Pleneau Island’s curious penguins and resting seals await those brave enough to navigate through a moving sea of pack ice.

Rovos Rail, known as one of the most luxurious trains in the world, started operating rail journeys in Africa in 1989. Recently, the route between Cape Town, South Africa, and Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam resumed operation. Up to 72 passengers in 36 cabins can go on a 2-15 night journey. All suites come equipped with a shower, toilet and basin. Bathtubs are available in the Royal suites. Guests are expected to adhere to a dress code for dinner, and diners may choose between tables for two or four. Meals are prepared with fresh local ingredients and paired with excellent South African wines.

Mushroom-shaped rocks in the middle of a vast landscape give Cappadocia its captivating appearance. 알람브라궁전과 구엘공원의 타일을 재현한 스페인정원. ‘세계정원’에는 12개국의 정원 디자인을 재현한 공간이 있다. 정원의 도시로
남도해양열차를 탔다. 서울에서 순천까지 4시간 30분 남짓. 3시간에 주파하는 고속열차를 두고 완행열차를 선택한 건, 느려서다. 속도를 늦춘 삶을 보고 싶어 남쪽으로 내려가는데 서두를 필요가 있나? 느긋한 마음으로 창밖 풍경에 시선을 두다 보면 ‘충분히 쉬었다’는 생각이 들 때쯤 ‘순천’이라는 두 글자가 나타난다.
순천을 찾은 건 정원 때문이다. 무려 ‘1호 국가정원’이라는 타이틀을 가진 곳이 이 도시에 있다. 순천만국가정원은 순천만을 보호하기 위해 만든 에코 벨트다. 매해 겨울이면 전 세계 흑두루미의 60% 이상이 찾아오는 세계 5대 연안습지를 지켜온 이 정원에서 올해 엑스포가 열린다. 2013년에 개최한 첫 엑스포 이후 10년 만에 열리는 2023순천만국제정원박람회엔 새로운 장면이 많다.
To the City of Gardens
In the city of Suncheon in South Jeolla Province is Suncheonman Bay National Garden, Korea’s first national garden. An ecological belt created for the purpose of preserving Suncheonman Bay, the garden is the protector of land. It’s part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve where more than 60% of hooded cranes from around the globe come to visit each winter. This year, the garden will be home to the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, which is being held for the first time in 10 years.

캐빈 ‘쉴랑게’ 안에선 정원뿐 아니라 동천 변의 사계도 담을 수 있다. 입장료를 내고 들어가는 정원 말고도 도시 구석구석 정원의 영역을 확장했다. 국가정원과 습지, 도심의 마을 정원과 순천의 젖줄인 동천을 따라 이어진 경관정원까지 포함하면 전체 규모가 약 5.45km²(165만 평)에 달한다. 도시 하나에 버금가는 면적을 전부 둘러보기란 무리. 가장 궁금했던 곳으로 직진한다. 동사 ‘쉬다’와 ‘길다, 오래’라는 뜻을 가진 독일어 ‘랑에(lange)’를 합친 ‘쉴랑게(Shilange)’는 꽃밭에서 하룻밤 보내며 정원 곳곳을 마음껏 취할 수 있는 캐빈. 이곳에 머무는 이들은 아무도 입장할 수 없는 밤과 이른 아침에 국가정원을 내 집 마당처럼 독식할 수 있다. 찰스 젱크스가 순천 땅의 형세를 본떠 디자인한 호수정원의 나선형 산책로를 홀로 걷거나 달빛 아래에서 프랑스, 이탈리아, 영국, 네덜란드 정원의 은밀한 순간을 엿볼 수 있다는 뜻이다. 거기에 순천에서 나고 자란 식재료로 만든 닭구이, 짱뚱어탕, 꼬막차우더수프 같은 음식이 때맞춰 식사로 나오고, 요가와 명상, 어싱(맨발 걷기)을 더해 몸과 마음에 기운을 불어넣는 경험까지 할 수 있다. 캐빈 앞 안락의자에 앉아 동천 변에 흐드러진 벚꽃을 마주 보며 이 낭만 넘치는 휴양을 후일로 기약한다.

If you count the national garden, wetland reserve, village gardens in the center of the city and the landscape gardens that run along Dongcheon Stream, it adds up to an area of around 5.45km². Too vast an area to cover in one go, I headed straight to the place that piqued my curiosity. Shilange, a mashup of the Korean word for “rest” and the German word for “long,” are cabins where you can spend a night in the flower fields and revel in the picturesque views of the garden. Those who stay here can enjoy a night where the national garden is their exclusive domain and stroll the grounds in the early morning, as if it were their own backyard. Guests can also enjoy a solitary walk along the helical walking trail of Suncheon Lake Garden, designed by the famous landscape designer Charles Jencks, and relish a secret moment under the moonlight in a French, Italian, British or Dutch garden. Meals consisting of roast chicken, jjangddong fish soup or cockle chowder made from locally sourced ingredients arrive at just the right time. The cabins also offer experiences that recharge the mind and body such as yoga, meditation and “earthing” (barefoot walking). Sitting in an armchair next to the cabin and gazing out at the vibrant cherry blossoms on the banks of Dongcheon Stream made me promise myself I would revisit this charming spot one day.

국가정원 안 ‘WWT습지’에선 홍학, 백조를 비롯해 다양한 조류와 철새를 만날 수 있다. 
WWT습지를 두르는 산책로. 영국 환경단체와 함께 조성했다. 아쉬운 마음을 느린 산책과 꽃구경으로 달랜 후 습지로 향했다. 순천이 생태 수도로 도약한 건 순천만습지를 지키려는 간절한 마음 덕이다. 22.6km²의 갯벌과 5.4km²의 갈대 군락지, 조류 252종과 동식물 1600여 종이 사는 대지가 주는 충만한 기운은 그 앞에 서지 않고는 가늠할 수 없다. 겨울철새가 떠난 봄의 순천만은 베어낸 갈대 사이로 뾰족 솟아오른 새순과 간간이 보이는 텃새들만 기척을 내는 고요의 땅. 습지 안쪽을 둥글게 휘감는 덱에 서면 사방에서 불어오는 산바람, 바닷바람에 속이 뻥 뚫리는 순간과 만난다. 게으른 길고양이처럼 그 위를 걷다가 농게, 칠게, 짱뚱어 같은 생명체가 둥지를 튼 갯벌 앞에 가만히 섰다. 그 살아 있는 존재들의 기척을 기다렸지만 기미 없이 잠잠하기만 한 땅. 이름 모를 텃새가 남기고 간 앙증맞은 발자국과 서서히 기우는 해가 드리우는 금빛 그림자만 얌전히 반짝이던 오후였다.
After a leisurely stroll and gazing at the flowers, I headed toward the wetlands. There is no way to fathom the energy of this amazing place until you’ve stood in front of the mudflat stretching 22.6km², reedbeds covering 5.4km² and a habitat that is home to 252 species of birds and some 1,600 animal species. Once the migratory birds of winter have left, Suncheonman Bay is a tranquil scene where the sharply protruding shoots and occasional resident bird glimpsed between the freshly cut reeds are the only signs of life. Standing on the deck that encircles the inner wetland area, I enjoyed the mountain and sea breezes blowing in from all sides. It was an afternoon where the only things that glimmered were the dainty footprints left behind by unknown resident birds and the golden shadows of the slowly setting sun.

남산 아래 옥천과 꽃 그림으로 단장한 옛 주택들이 한 폭의 수채화 같은 저전마을 
주민들이 직접 가꾸는 개인 정원을 엿보는 재미도 쏠쏠하다.저전 마을 느린 산책
저전(楮田)을 풀이하면 닥나무 밭. 한지를 만들었던 옛 마을은 이제 꽃과 풀, 나무를 가꾸는 마을이 됐다. 저전동에선 2023순천만국제정원박람회의 슬로건인 ‘정원에 삽니다’가 피부에 와닿는다. 1400여 가구가 사는 이 작은 동네에 눈 닿는 곳마다 정원과 텃밭이 있다. 순천시가 2018년 도시재생사업을 시작하며 마을의 헌 집과 빈집을 곱게 채색하고 버려진 공터에 꽃씨, 채소 씨를 뿌려 만든 아름다운 장면이다.
마을 주민들이 따로 또 같이 돌보는 45개의 정원을 안내하는 이정표가 있지만 굳이 그걸 보지 않아도 골목 어귀마다 크고 작은 화단이 산책자를 반긴다. 닥나무를 심은 띠정원, 350개의 항아리와 1400여 개의 디딤돌이 깔린 디딤돌정원, 마을 정원 안내자가 상주하며 꽃과 나무 이야기를 들려주는 보랏빛향기정원 등 각자의 이야기를 가진 정원을 둘러보다 보면 약 1시간 30분에 걸친 산책 코스가 금세 끝난다.
A Slow Walk Through Jeojeon Village
The word Jeojeon means mulberry field. This small village, which used to make hanji (traditional Korean paper), has now become a place that tends to flowers, grass and trees. The slogan of the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo is Live in the Garden, and I understood why during my stay.
Although there are signposts that provide information about the 45 gardens the residents maintain either individually or communally, visitors are greeted by flower beds of all sizes on every street corner so you can easily explore on your own. The village also has mulberry tree gardens and a Stepping Stone Garden with 1,400 or so stepping stones and 350 large traditional jars called hangari.

이름 붙은 정원 구경도 흥미롭지만 저전동 산책의 묘미는 담장 앞 군데군데 놓인 벤치에 앉아 담소를 나누는 마을 주민들과의 만남이다. 외지에서 온 티를 내며 이 집 저 집 고개를 기웃대고 있으면 동네에서 가볼 만한 곳과 맛집을 선물처럼 툭 건네주는 할머니, 할아버지들. 그 덕에 1919년 문 연 저전성당과 남산 아래 옥천 변의 수려한 경관을 놓치지 않고 마을 곳곳을 세세히 둘러볼 수 있었다. 옥천 변을 따라 아래쪽으로 내려오면 순천에서 가장 활기가 넘치는 거리와 만난다. 옥리단길로 불리는 이 구역은 예술가와 공예가, 젊은이들이 운영하는 상점과 카페, 공방, 서점 등이 모인 곳. 보일러 대리점을 개조한 식당, 전라도 사투리를 간판으로 내건 카페, 원도심이 한눈에 보이는 옥상을 가진 복합문화공간 등 들러볼 만한 곳이 꽤 많다. 옥천 변을 곁에 둔 이 원도심의 매력은 십수 세기의 시간이 교차하는 경관에 있다. 조선시대 순천향교, 15세기에 축조된 순천부읍성 터, 20세기 초에 세워진 순천기독교선교역사박물관 등 각기 다른 시절을 품은 건축물 사이를 걷다 보면 시계와 스마트폰을 들여다보고 싶은 충동을 잊은 채 모처럼 ‘지금’에 충실한 한나절을 보낼 수 있다.
There’s also a Violet Fragrance Garden where a villager tells the story of the trees and flowers. Each place has its own charm, and taking a look around them will bring you to the end of a 90-minute walking course in no time at all. Follow the banks of Okcheon Stream all the way down and you’ll end up at the trendiest street in Suncheon. Known as Okridan-gil, this is the street where stores, cafés, workshops and bookstores are clustered. Another charming feature of the city center is sites where countless centuries intersect. As you walk through buildings from different eras such as the Suncheon Hyanggyo Confucian School from the Joseon period (1392-1910) and Suncheonbueupseong Fortress built in the 15th century, you’ll soon forget about the urge to check your watch or smartphone. You can spend half a day fully embracing the moment.

순천 어디에 있든 해 질 녘엔 와온에 서 있어야 한다. 순천만 동편, ‘소가 누워 있는 형세의 봉우리 아래로 따뜻한 물이 흐른다’고 해서 와온(臥溫)으로 불리는 이 해변은 갯마을의 고즈넉한 일상에 잠시 숨어들기 좋은 곳이다. 무엇보다 와온의 일몰은 한국에서 아름다운 낙조를 고를 때 앞쪽에 꼽히는 장관으로 이름 높다.
해변가 어디에 서도 진흙 갯벌이 금빛으로 물드는 풍광을 볼 수 있지만 해가 시시각각으로 기우는 속도를 체감하고 싶다면 바다 건너 솔섬과 마주 서길 권한다. 학이 납작하게 엎드린 모양새라고 해서 학섬이라고도 불리는 이 섬은 지금은 무인도지만 예전엔 주막이 있어 ‘뻘배(조개를 캘 때 사용하는 널)’를 타고 조업을 나가는 어부들이 잠시 숨도 돌리고 목도 축였다는 얘기가 전해진다.
아직 해가 머리보다 한참 위에 솟아 있는 늦은 오후. 일찌감치 할 일을 마친 빈 갯벌엔 어부의 손길을 가까스로 피한 칠게와 짱뚱어, 꼬막이 숨을 고르며 자신들을 지켜줄 어둠이 오기를 기다린다. 뻘배가 지나가며 구불구불하게 낸 물길 위에 윤슬이 반짝이면 태양의 하강이 시작됐다는 신호. 해변을 두르는 남파랑길에 선 모든 이가 일제히 고개를 돌려 하늘을 응시한다. 그 장면, 달이 뜨기를 목놓아 기다리는 장면이 내겐 일몰만큼 아름다워 보였다. 살면서 그런 경험을 얼마나 할 수 있을까? 온 감각을 열어 해가 넘어갈 때 만물이 띠는 색과 온도, 그 찰나의 분위기에 자기를 던지는 일. 와온이 좋은 건 우리에게 그런 시간을 갖게 해주기 때문이다.

Wherever you are in Suncheon, you must make your way to Waon at dusk. The beach on the east side of Suncheonman Bay gets its name from being a place where “warm water flows down from the peak that resembles a cow lying down.” It’s famous for being one of the best spots to watch the sunset. Although you can view the mudflats tinged with gold from wherever you are on the coast, I recommend crossing over to Solseom Island to catch a better view of the sun as it winds its way down. While the sun is still high in the sky, the Japanese ghost crabs, mudskippers and cockles that have managed to evade the hands of fishermen all wait for the darkness that will bring them protection. When the gentle path created by a passing bbeolbae (board used to keep fishermen from sinking in the mud) starts shimmering in the remaining light, the sun has begun to descend. At that moment, everyone standing on Namparang-gil (1,470km coastal trail) focuses their gaze on the sunset, and the same people eagerly await for the moon to appear — a sight as beautiful as the setting sun. How often can you have this kind of experience in life? Reflecting on my time here, I come to the realization that the moment is a timely gift from Waon.

갈 만한 곳 ∕ Places Worth Visiting 와온 마을 가는 길에 위치한 유룡 마을엔 100여 년 된 한옥 고택을 개조해 만든 ‘와백당’이 있다. 누구나 자유롭게 들고 날 수 있는 공간으로, 마당 한쪽 별채에 마련한 무인 카페에서 커피 한 잔 내린 후 마당에 앉아 고목이 피워내는 각양각색의 꽃을 감상하며 쉬어 가보자. 마을 뒤편으로 난 대숲엔 가벼운 산책을 즐기기 좋은 길도 있다.
On the way to Waon Village is the fishing village of Yuryong. Here you can find Wabaekdang, a remodeled hanok (traditional Korean home) that has stood for close to 100 years. Get yourself a coffee from the unmanned café in a building on one side of the courtyard before sitting down to rest. Take a moment to awaken your senses and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

화려한 네일아트를 한 여성이 인스타그램 스토리에 한 장의 음식 사진을 올렸다. 소시지와 떡을 꼬치에 교대로 끼워 소스를 발라 먹는 ‘소떡소떡’이다. 한국에선 휴게소나 시장에서 쉽게 볼 법한 분식으로, 특별할 것 없는 게시물이다. 하지만 이 사진의 주인공이 바로 약 1억 5000만 명의 팔로어를 보유한 래퍼 카디 비라면 이야기는 달라진다. 분식이 한국을 상징하는 음식으로 주목받기 시작한 것은 오래된 일이 아니다.
외국인들의 관심사가 화려한 비빔밥이나 고급 요리에 속하는 불고기에서 저렴한 서민 음식인 분식으로 옮겨간 배경에는 K-콘텐츠의 무서운 저력이 있었다.
코로나19로 각국의 국경이 닫히기 전까지 K-콘텐츠는 음악, 특히 화려한 퍼포먼스의 아이돌 이미지가 강했다. 하지만 팬데믹 직후부터 K-콘텐츠는 흥미로운 방향으로 흘렀다. 2020년 아카데미상 수상작 <기생충>은 외국인들에게 한국 음식의 이미지를 새로 쓰는 계기가 됐다. <기생충>에서 외국인들이 열광한 것은 라면이었다. 짜파게티와 너구리 라면의 혼합, ‘짜파구리’가 그 주인공. 라면과 우동을 합친 ‘람동’으로 번역된 짜파구리는 <기생충>에 빠진 외국인들을 분식에 눈뜨게 했다. <오징어 게임>을 본 외국인들은 우리가 길거리에 쪼그려 앉아 만들던 간식 달고나에 환호했다. 리얼한 서민의 모습을 그린 한국 콘텐츠가 연이어 히트하자 덩달아 서민의 음식으로 상징되는 분식이 주목받기 시작한 것이다.

It’s a kind of bunsik (Korean snack food) that can easily be found at rest areas and markets in Korea. By itself, the post isn’t special, but when it’s uploaded by rapper Cardi B, who has over 150 million followers, it’s a whole different story. It hasn’t been very long since bunsik dishes began to garner attention as representative foods of Korea. Internationally, the shift in interest from fancy bibimbap and bulgogi to bunsik can be attributed to the power of K-content. Before each country closed its borders due to COVID-19, K-content was strongly represented by K-pop. However, it started moving in an interesting direction after the onset of the pandemic. The Academy Award-winning film Parasite (2019) painted a new picture of Korean food for overseas audiences. The food that inspired the most enthusiasm was jjapaguri, a combination of two kinds of ramyeon (Korean instant noodles). The two brands are Chapagetti and Neoguri. This simple dish awakened fans of Parasite to the world of bunsik. Overseas viewers of Squid Game (2021) fell in love with dalgona, a nostalgic street snack made from melted sugar and baking soda. With more K-content focusing on the lives of ordinary Koreans, bunsik has found its place on the world stage.
K-Food
여기에 인지도 있는 아이돌의 영향력이 더해졌다. 블랙핑크 리사는 멤버 지수의 드라마 촬영장에 분식 차를 보냈고, 일본의 한 외식 브랜드는 블랙핑크의 앨범 발매를 기념해 떡볶이 마니아 로제를 모티브로 한 ‘로제 떡볶이 블랙’을 현지에서 출시했다. BTS는 리허설이 끝나고 대기실에서 떡꼬치를 맛있게 먹었고, 해외 투어 당시 라이브 방송에서 수없이 많은 컵라면을 먹었다. 비빔면을 좋아하는 RM이 1개는 양이 적다며 사이즈를 늘려달라는 농담을 던지자 실제로 팔도에선 1.2배 커진 비빔면을 한정 출시했다. 지민이 먹은 길거리 떡볶이를 두고 미국 NBC는 “지민이 먹은 떡볶이에 대한 관심이 한국 대중문화의 확산을 가속화하는 데 일조했다”고 평가했다. 최근 방영한 예능 프로그램 <서진이네>는 본격적인 분식의 세계화를 방증했다. BTS 뷔를 비롯한 영화배우들이 멕시코 바칼라르에서 식당을 운영하며 떡볶이, 김밥, 라면, 핫도그 같은 일반적인 분식을 판매한다. 뷔는 <서진이네> 촬영 동안 라면을 자주 끓여 먹어 출연자들을 놀라게 했다.
The influence of recognizable idols has only added to the hype. BLACKPINK’s Lisa sent a bunsik food truck to co-member Jisoo’s drama filming location, and two restaurants in Japan launched special tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) dishes to mark the release of the group’s album. American NBC News also pointed out “...that moment BTS singer Jimin helped make [tteokbokki] a trending item on social media when he was spotted eating it at a Seoul food market.” Recently, BTS member V and other Korean actors on the reality show Jinny’s Kitchen proved that bunsik truly has gone global. The members of the show run a restaurant in Bacalar, Mexico, where they sell popular bunsik dishes such as tteokbokki, ramyeon and corn dogs.
K-Food
분식의 인지도가 올라가자 해외 분식점도 늘어났다. 런던의 분식점 ‘BUNSIK’은 달콤한 설탕이 뿌려진 핫도그로 영국인들을 기꺼이 줄 서서 기다리게 했다. 테이크아웃이 가능한 장점을 살려 더욱 인기를 끌었고 최근에는 3호점까지 오픈했다. 영국이 핫도그에 열광하고 있다면 미국은 떡볶이가 장악했다. 뉴욕의 ‘마녀 떡볶이’는 밀떡부터 고구마떡, 옥수수떡 등 다양한 유형의 떡을 로제나 카르보나라 소스에 볶아 판매한다. LA에 분점을 낸 ‘동대문엽기떡볶이’는 현지인들 사이에서 ‘미친 듯이 매운 떡볶이’로 ‘#K타운스파이시챌린지’라는 해시태그를 독점했다. 그런가 하면 일본에선 김밥이 인기다. 경제 전문지 <도요게이자이> 온라인은 “한국 김밥이 이렇게 일본에 침투한 이유”라는 기사에서 “일본 각지에 김밥 전문점이 들어서고 편의점에서도 판매된다. 유행이 점점 가속화 중”이라고 분석했다.
한국의 분식은 1960~70년대 쌀 부족으로 정부가 힘썼던 혼분식장려운동에서 시작됐다. 쌀로만 밥을 짓지 않고 일정량의 잡곡을 섞는 혼식과 밀 같은 다른 곡식으로 만든 분식을 장려한 운동이다. 이 시기부터 떡볶이, 라면, 순대 등이 길거리에서 쉽게 먹을 수 있는 서민의 음식으로 자리 잡았다. 이후 분식은 오랜 시간 다양한 변화를 거쳐 최근에는 프리미엄으로 변화 중이다. 건강한 식재료와 이색 음식을 넣은 김밥부터 고급 식재료를 토핑으로 올린 떡볶이, 새로운 조합으로 탄생한 신메뉴가 생겨났다.
서울 강남구에 있는 도산분식에선 튀긴 돈가스를 샌드위치에 끼워 넣거나 알싸한 마라 소스에 김말이튀김을 버무려 판매한다. 육회를 통째로 넣은 김밥도 즐길 수 있다. 서울 성동구의 띠또분식에선 수제 오징어튀김을 탑처럽 쌓은 깔라마리타워나 매콤한 짜장떡볶이를 맛볼 수 있다.
As the popularity of bunsik has increased overseas, so has the number of shops selling Korea’s street food. London restaurant Bunsik had Brits eagerly lining up for their wide variety of corn dogs. With the take-out option, it became even more popular and the restaurant has since opened two more locations. While the craze for corn dogs has swept across the U.K., the U.S. has fallen for tteokbokki. New York’s Witch Topokki encourages diners to create and cook their own specialized tteokbokki bowls with a variety of sauces and ingredients. Dongdaemun Yeopgi Tteokbokki opened a branch in Los Angeles known as Yupdduk and has monopolized the hashtag #KTownSpicyChallenge with what’s known as “crazy hot tteokbokki” among locals. In Japan, gimbap (seaweed rice roll) is popular. According to the Weekly Toyo Keizai, specialty gimbap shops have been popping up all over Japan. Local legend says a rice shortage in the 1960s and ’70s spawned Korean bunsik. The government launched a program to change dietary habits. Citizens were encouraged to include mixed grains in rice and to use other crops like wheat to make bunsik, which originally meant flour-based food. Since then, dishes like tteokbokki, ramyeon and others became the everyday food of common folk, available on every street corner. Over the years, bunsik has gone through a lot of changes. Recently, it’s even tapping into the premium space. From gimbap made with unique ingredients to tteokbokki with gourmet toppings, new combinations are paving the way for exciting dishes. Dosan Bunsik in Gangnam, Seoul, sells fried pork cutlet on a sandwich or gimmari (fried seaweed rolls) tossed in a mala (a spicy seasoning made from Sichuan peppercorn and chili) sauce. At Ttitto Bunsik in Seoul’s Seongdong-gu district, you can try the fried squid stacked into a calamari tower or jjajang (black bean sauce) tteokbokki.
K-Food
떡볶이를 너무 좋아해 <모두의 떡볶이>라는 책까지 출간한 홍신애 요리 연구가의 원 픽 분식점에도 특색 있는 메뉴가 많다. “강남구에 있는 루비떡볶이를 좋아해요. 새우깡떡볶이, 수제소시지김밥이 맛있어요. 특별한 식재료와 분식의 조화가 흥미롭죠.” 분식의 창조적 변화는 음식으로 끝나지 않는다. 과거 분식은 길거리에 서서 먹거나 가벼운 플라스틱 의자에 앉아 저렴한 접시에 담아 먹었다. 하지만 지금은 MZ세대가 좋아할 만한 키치한 인테리어나 고급스러운 와인 바를 연상시키는 분식점도 많다. 라면 브랜드 농심은 최근 메타버스 분식점을 오프라인에 그대로 옮겨 팝업스토어를 열었는데, 주말이면 오픈런을 할 정도로 북적였다. 홍신애 요리 연구가는 이러한 분식의 변화가 당연하다고 말한다. “우리만 먹기 아까울 정도로 분식이 맛있는 건 사실이잖아요. 언젠가 많은 외국인이 분식을 사랑할 날이 올 줄 알았어요. 이렇게 갑작스러울 줄은 예상치 못했지만요. 분식의 매력에 푹 빠진 외국, 색다른 분식을 끊임없이 개발 중인 한국. 바야흐로 분식의 시대라고 할 만해요.”
Food researcher and chef Hong Shin-ae loves tteokbokki so much that she published the book Everyone’s Tteokbokki, and has her own recommendation of bunsik restaurants. “I like Ruby Tteokbokki in Gangnam. The Saeukkang Tteokbokki (shrimp cracker spicy rice cake) and Handmade Sausage Gimbap are delicious,” she says. “The concept of unique ingredients and bunsik is exciting.” Bunsik is constantly changing. In the past, bunsik was eaten standing on the street or off inexpensive plates while sitting on plastic stools. But now, bunsik restaurants are reminiscent of high-end wine bars with kitschy interiors to suit the tastes of millennials and Gen Z. According to Hong, these trends in bunsik are to be expected. “With the world going head over heels for bunsik and Korea developing unique versions of the beloved dishes, you can truly say that we’re entering the Age of Bunsik.”

월드컵공원의 난지캠핑장에선 캠핑, 글램핑, 짧은 피크닉을 즐길 수 있다. 유독 공원이 많은 상암동. 그 배경에는 난지도가 있다. 난지도는 1978년부터 15년간 서울 시민이 버린 폐기물이 쌓인 2개의 거대한 산이다. 2002년 월드컵 개최를 계기로 난지도 일대 270만m2는 대규모 환경·생태공원으로 탈바꿈했다. 그렇게 탄생한 평화의공원, 하늘공원, 노을공원, 난지천공원, 난지한강공원이 모여 월드컵공원이 됐다. 평화의공원에는 유니세프광장과 난지연못, 피크닉장, 평화의정원 등이 있어 한적한 시간을 보내기 좋다. 난지천공원에는 유아놀이터와 축구장이, 난지한강공원에는 캠핑장과 산악자전거 체험장 등이 있어 좀 더 활동적인 시간을 보낼 수 있다.
Sangam-dong neighborhood has an abundance of parks. This is due to the transformation of its Nanjido Island, which had been used as a garbage dump for the city of Seoul for 15 years. When Seoul was named the host of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the city decided to turn the landfill into World Cup Park, a 2.7km2 collection of public spaces, namely, Pyeonghwa, Haneul, Noeul, Nanjicheon and Nanji Hangang River parks. At Pyeonghwa Park, you can enjoy the children’s playground, pond and garden, while Nanji Hangang Park offers spaces for mountain biking, skating and skateboarding.

문화마당, 커뮤니티센터, 이야기관, 공연장 등 총 7개 공간으로 나뉘어 있다.
1급 보안 시설로 41년간 일반인 접근이 금지됐던 석유비축 기지가 문화 탱크로 다시 태어났다. 이곳은 과거 많은 양의 석유를 보관했지만 2000년에 폐쇄된 이후 10년 남짓 방치하다 2017년부터 문화공간으로 오픈했다. 휘발유를 보관하던 T1 파빌리온에선 매봉산의 암반과 함께 전시나 공연을 감상할 수 있 고 경유를 보관하던 T2 공연장은 야외무대가 됐다. 대규모 축제나 공연, 벼룩 시장 등이 열리는 문화마당과 생태놀이터, 1.3km의 산책로도 있다.
What is now the Oil Tank Culture Park was an area closed to the general public for 41 years, but it’s now a cultural landmark open for anyone to visit. Originally, the space was used as an oil depot, but this was shut down for safety reasons ahead of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The T1 Glass Pavilion, which used to store petroleum, became a space for exhibitions and performances. The park also contains a culture plaza for outdoor festivals, performances and flea markets; a play area; and a trail for visitors to stroll along.

MBC 본사 사옥과 한국영상자료원, 누리꿈스퀘어가 둘러싸고 있는 문화 광장이다. 방송 관계자, 한류스타, 그들을 보러 온 팬들로 항상 붐빈다. 한류스타의 핸드 프린팅이 설치된 스타파크, 보이는 라디오 가든스튜디오를 비롯해 영화 <어벤져스: 에이지 오브 울트론>에 등장하는 파란 조형물 스퀘어 M도 자리했다. 광장 인근의 DMC 홍보관에선 체험형 미디어아트 전시 <거인별에서 온 텔레파시: 우주선을 고쳐줘!>가 열리고 있어 가족이 함께 다녀오기에도 좋다.
The Sangam Cultural Square, surrounded by the MBC headquarters, the Korean Film Archive, and Nuritkum Square, is always brimming with people who work in the media and Hallyu celebrities and their fans. This is where you can find the Star Park with Korean stars’ handprints, the glass-fronted MBC Garden Studio and Square M, which has the blue statues that appear in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Sangam DMC Promotion Center is holding a media art exhibition.
영화필름과 대본, 촬영 기기, 소품 등 영화와 관련된 다양한 자료가 소장된 박물관이다. <기생충>, <부산행> 등에서 배우들이 착용한 옷이 그대로 전시돼 있다. 대중문화의 주류로 등극한 좀비, 그중에서도 <부산행>, <킹덤>, <지금 우리 학교는>으로 이어지는 K-좀비를 입체적으로 즐길 수 있는 기획 전시 <지금 우리 좀비는>이 6월 24일까지 이어진다.
Run by the Korean Film Archive, this museum houses artifacts showing the 100-year history of Korean film. Visitors can see film clips, cameras, posters and props. Even costumes worn by actors in recent international hits, such as Parasite (2019) and Train to Busan (2016), are exhibited. If you are a fan of zombie films, check out the exhibition, All of Us are (Not) Zombies, which runs through June 24.

Sangam-dong may be known for its parks, but it’s a great place for you to relax as you watch the mulgyul (waves) in the Hangang River, especially at the Mulgyul Hangang café, which is right on the river. The Seoul Mountain Climbing and Culture Center is a cultural complex jointly built by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Park Young-seok Exploration and Cultural Foundation. On the first floor, where there’s a branch of Terarosa Coffee, people can find a permanent exhibition hall and enjoy pictures and augmented reality views of the Seven Summits, the world’s highest mountains, as well as the 47 named mountains in Seoul. There’s also an indoor/outdoor artificial rock climbing wall that’s 14.4m tall and 31m wide and an indoor bouldering gym for both beginners and professionals. Special programs for children and those with disabilities are also available.

월드컵공원 중 하늘과 가장 맞닿은 하늘공원
130여 개의 캠핑 사이트가 있는 노을공원서울시산악문화체험센터를 중심으로 양쪽에 자리한 노을 공원과 하늘공원은 이름처럼 월드컵공원에서 가장 높은 곳에 위치했다. 시원하게 뻗은 한강과 더불어 탁 트인 서울의 전경을 내어준다. 노을공원에 도심 속 색다른 하룻밤을 보낼 수 있는 노을캠핑장이 있다면, 하늘공원에는 철마다 바꿔 피는 꽃과 푸른 녹음이 있다. 걸어 올라갈 수도 있지만, 맹꽁이 열차를 타면 더 쉽게 올라갈 수 있다. 노을공원은 반딧불이생태관 인근에서, 하늘공원은 유아숲체험원 인근에서 타면 된다.

Arte Museum Gangneung is a popular spot for art lovers. 아름다운 동해에서 하늘을 걷는 듯한 스릴을 느끼고 싶다면 도째비골 스카이밸리로 가야 한다. 고도 59m의 아찔한 전망대 스카이워크, 케이블 와이어를 따라 하늘 위를 자전거로 달리는 스카이사이클, 전망대에서 타는 약 27m의 원통형 미끄럼틀 자이언트 슬라이드가 기다리고 있기 때문. 자연을 감상하며 이색 레포츠까지 체험할 수 있다. ‘도깨비’의 방언인 ‘도째비’에서 이름을 따왔는데, 덕분에 곳곳에 귀여운 도깨비 조형물이 많다.
To feel the thrill of walking in the sky, visit Dojjaebigol Sky Valley in the port city of Donghae. Attractions include a 59m-high skywalk and observation deck, a sky-cycle ride and a giant 27m cylindrical slide. Dojjaebigol takes its name from dojjaebi, which in the local dialect is the term for “goblin.” The area is home to numerous goblin sculptures, including one of a willow tree known as the Dokkaebi Tree.
조선시대 대학자 율곡 이이의 생가이자 그의 어머니인 화가 신사임당의 친정집이다. 율곡 이이는 5000원권 지폐의 모델, 신사임당은 5만 원권 지폐의 모델이다. 말하자면 오죽헌은 세계 최초 모자 화폐 인물 탄생지인 셈이다. 조선 중기에 지어 한국의 주택 중 비교적 오래된 건축물에 속해 건축학적 면에서도 뛰어난 가치를 지닌 곳이다. 뒤뜰에 줄기가 손가락만 하고 색이 검은 대나무가 자라고 있어 ‘오죽헌’이라 이름 붙었다.
Ojukheon is the house where Yi I, also known as Yulgok, a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) was born, as was his mother, painter Shin Saimdang. Named after black bamboo growing in the surrounding garden, the house has been preserved by Gangneung City. Yulgok appears on the 5,000 won bill, and his mother on the 50,000 won bill: a world first for a mother and son to both appear on a currency.

송혜교는 1990년대 중반부터 20년 넘게 연기를 했지만 정점이 언제인지 쉽게 말하기 힘든 배우다. 2000년, 원빈과 송승헌이라는 당대 최고 청춘스타와 함께 출연했던 드라마 <가을동화>는 한국 콘텐츠가 아시아로 퍼져나가는 ‘한류’의 출발점이었다. 2003년, 카지노 배경의 액션 드라마 <올인>은 부잣집 예쁜 딸과 가련한 소녀를 오가던 그가 배우로 한층 발돋움할 수 있는 기회를 선사했다.

Song Hye-kyo has been acting for more than 20 years, but it’s difficult to define the peak of her career. In 2000, Song appeared alongside popular teen heartthrobs Won Bin and Song Seung-heon in the drama Autumn in My Heart — the beginning of the Korean Wave as local content went beyond national borders and spread to Asia. After treading the line between the pretty daughter of a rich family and a pitiable young girl, the 2003 casino action drama All In offered Song the chance to progress as an actress. Her success continued with the 2004 hit Full House, costarring global K-pop icon Rain.
Song made her film debut in My Girl and I (2005), infusing the film with her bright and cheery personality in the role of Su-eun, a thoughtful high school student who strives to maintain a warm smile, even in the face of death. Buoyed by the name value Song provided, My Girl and I exceeded initial expectations for overseas ticket sales. Meanwhile, Hwang Jin Yi (2007), her first period drama, attracted attention. At a time when she was reaching new heights and was gaining fame as a Hallyu star, Song made a unique choice. After playing beauty queen characters adored by men, she teamed up with screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung in the 2008 drama Worlds Within to take on the role of a TV drama producer, portraying the career and love troubles of contemporary women. In A Reason to Live (2011), directed by Lee Jeong-hyang, Song was cast as a documentary producer plagued by complex feelings of having to forgive a teenager who killed her fiancé in an accident. And, after numerous attempts, screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung persuaded her to play a blind woman in That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013).
Song also made international appearances, starring in the low-budget American horror thriller Fetish (2008) and playing Ip Man’s wife in The Grandmaster (2013), a Wong Kar-wai film about the martial arts master.
In My Brilliant Life (2014) directed by E J-yong, Song showed another side. Playing an unyielding young mother taking care of her family while raising a son with progeria, Song proved she was developing into an actress who could embody the ups and downs of real life.
Then came Descendants of the Sun (2016), an action romance drama partly shot on location overseas. Song played surgeon Mo-yeon and showcased flawless chemistry with the special forces soldier played by Song Joong-ki. The drama ushered in a new era of streaming in which K-content could easily reach global audiences.
Song’s desire to act in new genres such as thrillers and play more complex characters was realized in The Glory (2022). As Moon Dong-eun, Song speeds full steam ahead right until the end of this elaborate revenge story that unfolds over several decades. Moon’s sword dance is now over, but Song has reached a new milestone as an actor. Her glory days look set to continue.

문필가나 화가에게 청춘은 결코 닳지 않는 소재다. 건축에서 청춘은 무엇일까? 호기심은 건축가 안도 다다오와 함께 시간을 보내는 동안 말끔하게 풀렸다. 오사카에서 태어나 독학으로 건축을 시작한 사람, 한때 권투선수였던 독특한 이력, 암으로 담관, 담낭, 십이지장, 췌장을 절제하고도 현역에서 일하는 불굴의 의지를 가진 남자. 건축가로서의 명성 외에도 따라붙는 인간 승리의 궤적은 그를 더 입지전적인 인물로 만든다. 올해로 81세를 맞이한 노장은 넘치는 활력으로 서울과 원주에서 바쁜 일정을 소화했다. 연일 이어지는 강행군에도 오사카 사람 특유의 유머를 잃지 않는 그의 모습은 ‘청춘’ 그 자체였다. “사실 저는 계속 절망적인 인생이었습니다. 장기를 절제해도, 학력이 짧아도 청춘을 유지하면서 살아간다는 것을 보여주고 싶었습니다. 10대, 20대뿐만 아니라 살아 있는 동안은 모두가 청춘이라고 생각합니다.”
For writers and painters, youth is a subject that never grows old. But what does youth mean for the architect? My curiosity on the question was satisfied during my time with the architect Tadao Ando. A native of Osaka, Japan, Ando is a self-taught architect and a former boxer, an indomitable figure who remains active even after his bile ducts, gallbladder, duodenum and pancreas were removed because of cancer. For an 81-year-old, Ando is brimming over with energy, delivering lectures in Seoul and Wonju and presiding over a press conference and exhibition opening. He keeps up the good humor characteristic of Osakans throughout a grueling schedule that runs from morning to evening, proving himself the very image of youth.

건축에 대한 끝없는 도전, “매일 더 나은 설계를 한다”는 스스로의 신념이자 인생을 대하는 태도는 결국 청춘으로 귀결된다. 그의 세계를 관통하는 이 단어는 이번 전시에서 고스란히 드러난다. 강원도 원주에 위치한 뮤지엄 산의 흰 벽은 안도 다다오의 건축 인생이 파노라마로 펼쳐진 캔버스. 그가 ‘청춘’이라는 이름으로 모은 아카이브는 본태박물관, 유민미술관 등 우리나라에 설계한 대표적인 건축물은 물론 1969년에서 1990년대 중반에 이르는 전반기 건축 작품부터 30년에 걸쳐 완성한 나오시마 프로젝트, 1990년대 중반 이후 세계 공공장소에서의 건축 작품들과 2020년 준공한 부르스 드 코메르스 리노베이션 프로젝트를 망라한다. 여기에 더해 거대한 ‘푸른 사과’가 청춘을 찾아 나선 이들을 맞는다. 이 조형물에 작가는 ‘희망’이라는 의미를 붙였다. 사과 앞에 선 그는 “사과를 만지면 수명이 1년 는다”고 너스레를 떨었다. 미술관에 사람을 더 많이 오게 만들려면 작전을 짜야 한다는 건축가의 전략은 확실하게 통한다. 농담인 걸 알면서도 사과 표면을 웃으며 쓰다듬는 인파가 공간을 완전하게 채운다.
“건축은 처음 지었을 때가 최상의 모습이 아닙니다. 세월이 지나며 계속 변화하니까요. 설계를 의뢰하는 사람과 관리하는 사람 그리고 방문하는 사람들로 인해 좋은 방향을 찾게 됩니다. 건축이란 마치 아이가 성장하는 것과 같아요.”
뮤지엄 산은 개관 후 5년마다 성장하듯 새로운 건축물을 늘려왔다. 올해 5월 즈음에는 그의 전매특허인 빛이 통과하는 십자가를 볼 수 있다. 하늘에서 땅으로 떨어지는 빛을 십자가가 받드는 형태의 파빌리온 <빛의 공간> 은 그가 이야기하는 ‘성장하는 건축’의 증거다.

“I wanted to show I’ve preserved my youth despite my lack of education and the removal of my organs. I think that youth spans not just your teens and twenties, but your whole life.” Ando’s attitude toward life — as well as his commitment to always trying something new and improving his designs every day — ultimately functions as a personal fountain of youth. The white walls of Museum SAN, in Wonju, Gangwon-do Province, are the canvas displaying the panorama of Ando’s career as an architect. The archive he has collected under the title Youth includes not only some of his best-known buildings in Korea — including the Bonte Museum, Yumin Art Nouveau Collection, and LG Arts Center — but also works of architecture from the first half of his career (running from 1969 to the mid-1990s); his Naoshima projects, which he worked on over three decades; other buildings he has designed in public spaces around the world since the mid-1990s; and his renovation of Bourse de Commerce, completed in 2020.
Then there’s the massive green apple that greets visitors who come by in search of youth. The apple, which shares the title of the exhibition, signifies hope for Ando. “Touching the apple will add a year to your life,” he jokes as we stand in front of it. He tells me that a strategy is needed to draw more people to a museum. Seeing the area full of smiling visitors rubbing the apple, I realize his strategy is working. “A work of architecture doesn’t reach its ideal form when first built. It keeps changing over the course of two years, three years, 10 years, 20 years. It’s nudged in the right direction by those who commissioned it, those who maintain it and those who visit it. A work of architecture is like a growing child. Given Korea’s culture of cherishing objects, sheltering children and respecting the elderly, I believe Koreans can help works of architecture grow up in the right direction,” Ando says.

안도 다다오는 성장 가도만 달려왔을까? 프리츠커건축상, 칼스버그건축상, 미국건축가협회 대상 등 각종 건축상을 휩쓴 세계적인 거장에게도 어려운 순간은 있었다. 손쉽게 구할 수 있는 값싼 콘크리트를 건축 전면에 내세워 공감을 얻지 못하고, 빛을 그대로 받아들이기 위해 틈을 낸 곳에 유리조차 끼우지 않겠다는 과감한 발상으로 설왕설래를 겪고, 프로젝트가 무산되는 좌절도 경험했다. 결국 노출콘크리트 기법은 그를 이 시대의 가장 중요한 건축가 중 한 명으로 만들어주었다. “재미있는 것일수록 초반에는 거절당하기 마련입니다.” 유쾌하지만 반생을 넘는 경험에서 나오는 한마디가 묵직하다.
모든 걸 다 이룬 것 같은 그에게도 아직 100세까지의 계획이 남아 있다. 건축가의 삶이 시작된 오사카로 회귀해 사람 사는 공간을 더 짓는 것, 오사카에 뿌리를 둔 문화와 인물들을 더 널리 알릴 수 있는 건축을 하는 것, 그리고 여전히 희망적이며 마음을 전하는 공간을 만드는 것. 서울에서 만나 자신의 꿈을 이야기하는 안도 다다오는 육신의 모습과는 상관없이 청춘의 에너지를 뿜어내고 있었다.

It would be wrong to assume that his career in architecture has been a story of uninterrupted growth. Even a world-renowned winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Carlsberg Architectural Prize and American Institute of Architects Gold Medal has had his fair share of hard times. Facades made of cheap and easily sourced concrete did not go over well, and a project was scrapped over his bold refusal to place glass in openings designed to let in natural light. In the end, Ando’s exposed concrete technique made him one of the most important architects of his era, and the scrapped project wound up getting rebooted to great success 20 years later. “The most interesting ideas are the ones most likely to be rejected at the outset,” he says. This offhand remark has unexpected weight, deriving as it does from a lifetime of experience.
After two bouts with cancer, Ando has cut his workload in half, but he remains in good shape. By eating slowly, taking walks, and getting exercise, he has brought balance to his life so that he can carry on with his work. As a result, he has more time to read now. The reason he got into architecture in the first place was because of a collection of the works of Le Corbusier that he stumbled upon in a used bookstore. He also mentioned a book he wanted to recommend to today’s generation.
“I really enjoyed reading the biography of the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore,” says Ando. “He was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. His life was one of great hardship which made him the man we know today as Tagore.” After everything he has achieved, Ando still has plans that should keep him busy through his 100th birthday. He intends to return to his roots in Osaka and keep making structures that are rooted in the city’s culture and spaces that are hopeful and emotionally evocative. As Ando spoke of his dreams in his interview in Seoul, he emanated a youthful energy that transcended his physical appearance.

“You know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby!” 이 단순한 문장을 듣거나 보자마자 하나의 밴드를 떠올렸다면 당신은 뜨거웠던 ‘20세기 소년 소녀’일 가능성이 높다. 1980~90년대를 풍미한 미국 록밴드 건즈 앤 로지스의 대표곡 ‘Welcome to the Jungle’(1987년). 보컬 액슬 로즈가 새된 소리로 포효하던 그 가사였으니 말이다.
하지만 2016년 4월 23일 밤, 정글은 사막으로 바뀌었다. 미국 캘리포니아주 인디오에서 열린 북미 최대 야외 대중음악 축제 코첼라 밸리 뮤직 앤드 아츠 페스티벌의 메인 스테이지. 액슬 로즈가 외친 다음과 같은 변형 가사에 나는 심박이 멎을 뻔했다.
“You know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby!” If a certain band comes to mind when you read or hear this simple sentence, it’s likely you’re one of the boys or girls of the 20th century who burned with fiery passion. These are the lyrics belted out in a shrill voice by Axl Rose, lead vocalist of the iconic American rock band Guns N’ Roses, in one of their greatest hits Welcome to the Jungle (1987).
However, the jungle turned into a desert on April 23, 2016. I was in front of the main stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held in Indio, California, and my heart almost stopped when Axl shouted out a different take on the lyrics.
“You know where you are? You’re in COACHELLA, baby!” 40℃에 달하는 사막기후의 낮을 견딘 코첼라 관객들은 로즈의 한마디에 일순간 장미 덩굴이 흐드러진 울창한 정글 속으로 빨려 들어갔다. 이 이야기를 꺼낸 건 오는 6월, 영국의 어떤 들판에 가고 싶은 이유를 설명하기 위해서다. 대서양 건너 서머싯 들판에서 저 외침이 또 다음과 같이 변할지 모르니까. “You know where you are? I bring this story up in order to explain why I want to visit a certain field in Britain this coming June — there is a chance that the shrieking voice might scream the following in a field in Somerset all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. “You know where you are? You’re in GLASTO, baby!” Glasto is an abbreviation for the Glastonbury Festival. This will be the first time that Guns N’ Roses have traveled to the U.K. to headline the historic festival. Glastonbury began in Somerset in 1970, and its fields are now home to one of the world’s largest outdoor music festivals, which drew more than 200,000 people from around the world last year. The Pyramid Stage is the largest of the festival’s multiple venues and could even be called a symbolic megalith for global live music with its majestic appearance modeled after the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Having produced the likes of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, it’s possible the British may turn up their musical noses at the American band. That’s why the headliner for the following evening is British artist Elton John.

대한항공 라운지에 세라젬 프리미엄 제품을 체험할 수 있는 공간이 마련됐다. 인천국제공항 제2터미널 퍼스트, 마일러, 프레스티지 라운지에 세라젬 제품을 설치해 대한항공 이용객들이 여행 전 피로를 풀고 편안하게 휴식을 취하도록 한 것이다. 라운지에 설치된 제품들은 세라젬의 주력 헬스케어 기기라 할 수 있는 척추 의료기기 세라젬 V6, 안마 의자 디코어, 안마 의자 파우제 M2, 리클라이닝 소파 파우제 S 등이다.
그중에서도 세라젬 V6는 국내 식약처와 미 FDA 등에서 의료기기로 인증받은 제품이다. 척추 전반에 걸쳐 마사지와 최대 65도의 집중 온열을 제공하며 식약처로부터 추간판탈출증·퇴행성협착증 치료, 근육통 완화, 혈액순환 개선 등 4가지 사용목적을 인증받았다. 대한항공은 항공 여행의 특성상 오랫동안 좌석에 앉아 있어야 하는 상황을 감안해 이 같은 협력을 진행했다. 이어 추후 고객들이 보다 더 편안하게 여행할 수 있도록 지속적으로 관련 서비스를 업그레이드해나갈 예정이다.
Korean Air’s First Class, Miler Club and Prestige Class lounges in Incheon Airport’s Terminal 2 are equipped with CERAGEM’s premium massage products to help travelers relax before their journeys. Items available for use in the lounges are from the company’s line of products and include the therapeutic thermal massager CERAGEM V6, massage chairs D.CORE and PAUSE M2, and the CERAGEM PAUSE S recliner sofa. Among these products, CERAGEM V6 has been approved by the Ministry of Food, Drug and Safety in Korea and the United States FDA as a medical device. Based on its patented technology, the V6 model is designed to deliver intensive thermal therapy with massage rollers that heat up to 65 degrees Celsius. The comprehensive spinal care device is helpful in relieving muscle pain, improving blood circulation and treating conditions such as herniated disk and lumbar spinal stenosis. Korean Air decided to collaborate with CERAGEM to provide a relaxing experience for its customers who are flying long-distance. The airline plans to continue to upgrade such services to make the traveling experience more comfortable for its passengers.

대한항공은 기내 와인 리스트에 새로운 변화를 주기 위해 장기간 많은 고민을 해왔다. 와인 서비스는 항공사의 첫인상을 좌우하는 데다 지난해 3월부터 선보인 제육쌈밥과 고등어조림, 불고기묵밥과 비빔국수 등 새로운 기내식 메뉴와 조화를 이룰 수 있는 와인을 찾아야 했기 때문이다. 이를 위해 대한항공은 국제소믈리에협회가 주관하는 ‘월드 베스트 소믈리에 2019’ 챔피언인 마크 알머트와 함께 150종의 와인 블라인드 테이스팅을 진행, 새로운 와인 52종을 기내 와인으로 선정했다. 마크 알머트가 기내 서비스 와인 선정 과정에서 특히 중점을 둔 것은 비행기 내 환경 및 기내식과의 어울림이다. 그는 “지상에 비해 기압이 낮고 건조한 비행기 내 환경에서는 후각이 둔해지고 적은 양의 와인에도 쉽게 취할 수 있다”며 “기내에서도 와인의 풍미를 잘 느낄 수 있도록 과실향과 아로마가 풍부하면서도 부드러운 와인을 선정했다”고 설명했다.
일등석 와인 20종, 프레스티지석 와인 21종, 이코노미석 와인 11종 등 총 52종의 와인이 선정됐다. 새로운 와인은 3월 이후 기내에 차차 선보일 예정이다.
Korean Air has introduced a selection of new in-flight wines after going through a careful selection process. In-flight wine programs contribute to passengers’ first impressions of an airline, and the new wines needed to pair well with the meals introduced in March 2022, such as Korean spicy pork with greens, braised mackerel, acorn jelly and bulgogi rice, and spicy noodles with vegetables. To achieve this goal, Korean Air conducted a blind tasting of 150 wines and selected 52 new ones in collaboration with Marc Almert, who was named the World’s Best Sommelier 2019 by the International Sommelier Association. Almert focused on the in-flight environment and how the new wines would pair with the meals. “The cabin pressure and a drier environment can distort the taste of some wines. We considered this and therefore chose fruity and aromatic wines that perfectly complement the in-flight cuisine,” he explained.
Of the 52 wines selected, 20 were for First Class, 21 for Prestige Class and 11 for Economy Class. They have been served on all flights since March this year.

대한항공은 4년 전부터 업사이클링 프로젝트를 진행해왔다. 폐기되는 항공기를 활용하여 네임택과 볼마커를 제작하고, 노후 구명조끼를 이용해 한정판 파우치를 출시하며 자원재활용에 가치를 부여해왔다. 이번에는 수많은 탑승객을 태우고 하늘을 날던 HL7715(BOEING 777-200ER) 항공기로 세 번째 업사이클링 제품을 출시했다. 2020년 3월, 샌프란시스코 - 인천 구간을 마지막으로 비행을 마친 HL7715(BOEING 777-200ER) 항공기의 동체 표면을 잘라 네임택과 볼마커로 재탄생했다. 이렇게 제작된 제품은 사용된 동체 부분에 따라 두께와 색상이 다른 것이 특징이다. 각각의 제품에는 BOEING 777-200ER 레터링과 항공기 일련번호, 시리얼 넘버가 새겨져 있다. 네임택은 다각형과 직사각형 프레임 2가지이며, 5000개 한정으로 제작되었다. 선착순 2000명 대상으로 구매자의 이름과 연락처를 각인할 수 있다. 볼마커는 원형과 반달형 프레임이 각각 1개씩 총 2개 1세트로 구성되며 2000세트 한정으로 제작된다. 네임택과 볼마커는 5월 3일부터 이스카이숍(www.e-skyshop.com)을 통해 구매 가능하다. 각인 신청 또한 구매 페이지에서 가능하다.
Korean Air started organizing upcycling projects four years ago in an attempt to add value to recycled goods for environmental purposes, such as making luggage tags out of discarded plane parts or limited edition cosmetic pouches out of life vests. The company’s third project involves the scrapping of a Boeing 777-200ER that traveled the San Francisco to Incheon route — registration number HL7715. After making its last flight in March 2020, parts of the plane’s fuselage were upcycled into limited edition luggage tags and golf ball markers. What’s unique about these is that their thickness and color can vary depending on which part of the plane was used. Each product will have the flight name, number and production code engraved on them. Only 5,000 luggage tags will be produced with two options for shape — a rectangle or a rhombus. If you’re one of the first 2,000 people to pre-order, you can have your name and contact number custom engraved. For golf ball markers, 2,000 sets will be made available for sale, with each set containing two markers. Luggage tags and ball markers can be purchased from Korean Air’s e-SKYSHOP (www.e-skyshop.com) starting May 3. Custom engraving requests can also be made on the website.

In the world of sports, “dynasty” is a term used to describe teams that dominate their sportʼs league for a lengthy period of time. In April 2023, Korean Air’s professional men’s volleyball team, the Jumbos, claimed this prized moniker after topping the league for the third straight year. Since the 2010s, no team had been able to call itself dynastic until the Korean Air Jumbos kicked off their winning streak starting with the 2020-2021 season.
1969년 창단한 대한항공 점보스는 2005년 프로배구 출범 이후 본격적인 승리의 가도를 달렸다. 2007-2008시즌 정규리그 2위로 시즌을 마친 후 꾸준한 팀 재정비를 통해 2010-2011시즌, 드디어 첫 정규리그 1위를 차지했다. 하지만 챔피언 결정전에서 석패하며 좌절을 맛봤다. 이후 대한항공 점보스는 2015-2016시즌까지 별다른 성적을 내지 못했다. 승리의 칼날을 갈던 점보스는 드디어 2017-2018시즌, 정규리그 3위로 챔피언 결정전에 오른 뒤 우승까지 차지했다. 첫 V리그 우승이었다.

The Jumbos are enjoying their spot at the top and have become one of the most feared teams in the league. Built around veteran player and captain Han Seon-su, the players are excellent in offense and defense. Coach Tommy Tiilikainen has also played a major role in elevating Korean Air to the throne. Tiilikainen, who took over as team coach in 2011, has brought youthful innovation to the Jumbos. He even won the men’s coach award this season. On top of that, last season’s members — outside hitters Jung Ji-seok and Kwak Seung-seok; the best opposite spiker, Lincoln; middle blockers Cho Jae-young and Kim Kyu-min; and libero, Jung Sung-min — all played a part in the team’s success.
The Korean Air Jumbos, founded in 1969, became a professional volleyball team in 2005 and had a successful run. After finishing the 2007-2008 season in second place, the team finally won first place in the regular league in the 2010-2011 season. However, the Korean Air Jumbos had lackluster seasons for several years, and it wasn't until the 2017-2018 season that the team next experienced V-League victory.
This season, the Korean Air Jumbos won the regular league, the championship match as well as the professional volleyball cup tournament held before the opening of league play to claim the top spot in the league for the fourth time. Captain Han, who won the MVP award as a setter, is simply enjoying his glory days, and the future of the Korean Air Jumbos is looking especially bright with him and coach Tiilikainen at the helm. The team is on a winning trajectory and the era of Korean Air has dawned.

In May 1997, Korean Air ended its Seosomun era with a move to Gimpo Airport. A decade in the making, the unique design of the OC (Operation Center) building featured a large central hangar connected to the airport ramp and runway. The OC integrated the functions scattered between Seosomun and Gimpo Airport and established a centralized on-site management system, while preparing for the Incheon Airport era.
