The International African American Museum has officially opened to the public in Charleston, South Carolina, offering visitors a sweeping, bird’s-eye view of African American history. The site of the museum, Gadsden’s Wharf, was once the largest slave port in the U.S. The African Ancestors Memorial Garden, at the building’s entrance, features slave ship diagrams and palm trees, reflecting the historical legacy of African Americans. Visitors can also check out 12 exhibitions presenting candid stories of the struggles and triumphs of generations of African Americans.

Every summer in Chicago, a dazzling air show fills the sky over Lake Michigan, along North Avenue Beach. On August 19 and 20, the Chicago Air and Water Show will feature performances by planes, boats and even diving and parachute teams, complete with lively commentary by Herb Hunter, who has hosted the show for over 20 years. Some of the most renowned civilian and military aircraft from around the country will be on display including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights, as well as the Red Arrows of Britain's Royal Air Force.

Combine the joys of camping with those of electronic music in a lush, natural setting. Taking place just outside of Amsterdam from August 25-27, the Mysteryland festival provides an opportunity to experience many different subgenres of electronic music in one place. Featuring over 300 artists across more than 20 stages, this year’s 30th anniversary edition is especially notable for its international lineup, including Britain’s James Hype, the Italian trio MEDUZA, and Australia’s Timmy Trumpet. Mysteryland cofounder Sander Groet will perform on the main stage on Saturday.

The 77th edition of the Avignon Festival, one of the world’s premier multidisciplinary art festivals, runs July 5-25. The festival will be held for the first time under its new director, Portuguese writer, actor and director Tiago Rodrigues. Opening the festival is Bintou Dembélé’s G.R.O.O.V.E., with a three-hour show that blends dance genres such as hip-hop, voguing and krumping, and even invites the audience to join in. In addition to the official program, a variety of small-scale operas, plays and musicals will also be held throughout the city of Avignon.

The prestigious Open Championship, the world’s oldest golf tournament, is back for the 151st edition. The British Open, as it is also called, will be played at Royal Liverpool for the first time since 2014. This year, the course has been refreshed with a bevy of new challenges, including additional bunkers and harsher runoff areas as well as entirely new tees and holes. Golfers from qualifying rounds held across the U.K. will compete at Royal Liverpool from July 16-23 for the coveted Claret Jug.

To get a sense of the contemporary Chinese arts and culture scene, head to the Meixihu International Culture and Arts Centre. Along with large-scale performances, launching events for famous brands and national conferences are held in the distinctively-shaped buildings designed by world-renowned architects Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher. A number of big shows are scheduled to take place in July and August, including the Russian National Ballet Company’s Swan Lake and the musical Hamlet.

Thousands of years of history and modern art are on display along Taiping Old Street. The street spanning just 380m is home to more than 30 historical buildings, ranging in age from 200 to 2,000 years old, including an ancient well and a mansion belonging to a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) prince. Described as China’s “Disneyland of food” and considered an Instagrammable spot, Super Wenheyou is a cultural complex that recreates the atmosphere of Hunan Province as it was in the 1970s and ’80s. It’s been visited by Chinese celebrities, including Alibaba founder Jack Ma, and is so popular that on weekends and holidays, some 16,000 wait list numbers are issued. From local stationery stores to restaurants selling Wenheyou’s signature dishes, visitors can find plenty of things to eat and do at the complex.

15세, 나는 이스라엘로 단체 여행을 떠났다. 세상의 경이로움에 눈을 휘둥그레 뜨고 환상에 젖기도 했던 나이. 이스라엘에 있는 여러 고대 유적지도 나의 호기심을 끌긴 했지만, 여행에서 가장 흥미를 느꼈던 것은 ‘키부츠’에서 보내는 일주일이었다. 키부츠는 이스라엘의 전통적인 집단 농업 공동체로, 나는 세계 각국에서 온 자원봉사자들이 참여하는 ‘키부츠 프로그램’을 경험하기로 했다.
나는 일주일간 목화 농장에서 일을 했다. 여행자들에게 단언컨대, 키부츠 프로그램은 결코 가벼운 봉사 여행이 아니다. 우리는 매일 오전 5시에 일어나 목화 재배를 시작했는데, 그곳에서 오전 5시는 전혀 이른 시간이 아니었다. 이 경험은 그동안 내가 가졌던 여행의 이미지를 완전히 새롭게 정의했다.

Full of wide-eyed wonder and youthful idealism, I signed up for a group tour of Israel when I was only 15 years old. Although fascinated by the chance to visit ancient sights, the aspect that most intrigued me was the week spent volunteering on a kibbutz — a settlement or community founded upon agriculture and unique to Israel. Through my role as a cotton-picking volunteer, I gained invaluable insights into what toiling on the land for survival entails. Make no mistake, this wasn’t a light tokenistic activity; it was hard physical labor where waking up at 5 a.m. was considered sleeping in. This adventure redefined for me the parameters of what a vacation could entail, and I was hooked. By default, I’d become a voluntourist.

얼마 전 나는 대서양의 환상적인 섬, 페로제도를 여행했다. 오랫동안 이 외딴섬에 가고 싶다는 생각이 있었지만, 결정적으로 나를 움직인 것은 바로 자원봉사 프로그램인 ‘클로즈드 포 메인터넌스’였다. 2019년부터 시작한 이 프로그램은 전 세계 수천 명의 지원자 중에서 무작위로 100여 명만을 선정한다. 이들은 페로제도에 속한 18개 섬에서 훼손된 자연을 복구하거나 망가진 집을 고치는 등의 봉사활동을 할 수 있다. 아, 물론 이 아름다운 섬을 탐험할 수 있는 환상적인 혜택도 따라온다. 나는 페로제도에서 여행과 봉사는 물론 현지인의 커뮤니티에도 빠르게 스며드는 놀라운 경험을 했다. 그들과 음식을 나누고 전통과 일상을 배웠다. 자연과 사람이 선물한 끊어지지 않을 유대감을 마음에 품고 돌아왔다.
봉사 여행은 여행지의 문화와 환경 그리고 사람을 긍정적인 방향으로 개선한다. 아름다운 경관을 눈에 담거나 현지인의 삶 깊숙이 들어갈 수 있는 봉사 여행은 뜻깊은 만족감을 선물할 것이다.
Voluntourism, a combination of overseas volunteer work and tourist experiences, has been around for many years in various forms. This kind of volunteering abroad has become one of the fastest-growing trends among travelers from North America and Europe. Research has shown that this $2 billion a year industry attracts an estimated 10 million overseas volunteers annually.
The recent spike in voluntourism can be linked to the pent-up wanderlust felt by many worldwide following the lockdowns of the pandemic. Young people, especially, are seeing volunteering as a way to finally travel the globe. Hannah Kebede, a 23-year-old English criminology graduate, had the opportunity to work with vulnerable communities at a rehabilitation center in Ethiopia. She notes that such overseas opportunities “combine affordable travel with invaluable work experience.”
Certainly, the modern voluntourist has a wide range of options these days. Rwanda has long been a voluntourism advocate, referring to it as ubwitange, meaning a “free will action.” They run an impressive plethora of programs, inviting those with skill sets in a variety of fields, such as medicine, education and sports. They even provide training for volunteers, making it an enticing proposition for those seeking a vocation.
My most recent foray into voluntourism took me to the magical Faroe Islands, in the North East Atlantic. I’d hoped to visit the remote archipelago for years and finally did so after they launched their Closed for Maintenance program. Since 2019, around 100 international volunteers have been randomly selected every year from thousands of applicants to help with necessary repairs to facilities on the Faroe’s 18 enchanting islands.
Traveling there as part of this scheme allowed me to mingle with the residents and gain an appreciation for the beautiful, rugged landscape, beyond the postcard-worthy views. We broke bread with the locals, learned about their traditions, listened to their stories and forged an unbreakable connection with them and the land.
The truth about voluntourism, at its best, is that although you may enter into it with altruistic intentions, the experiential rewards often far surpass your expectations. So what are you waiting for?

1 베르겐 기차에서 만나는 파노라마 노르웨이의 또 다른 아름다움을 감상하고 싶다면 오슬로에서 베르겐까지 운행하는 기차에 올라타자. 이 기찻길은 여행지 <론리플래닛>이 ‘유럽에서 가장 아름다운 풍광’으로 선정했다. 기차는 약 7시간 동안 달리는데 푸른 계곡, 피오르 협곡, 폭포, 산을 차례로 지나다 해발 1222m의 핀세역에서 절정에 이른다. 북유럽에서 가장 높은 곳을 달리는 기차를 자유롭게 타고 내리며 여행을 즐겨본다. 시간을 내어 하루 일정의 하이킹이나 산악자전거, 호수 탐험에 도전해 보길.
2 자연 속 액티비티 뤼세보튼 마을에서 텐트를 치고 캠핑을 하거나 카약을 타며 대자연의 속살을 파고들어 본다. 셰라그산의 명물 바위까지 트레킹하는 것도 좋겠다. 여행자를 위해 마련된 뤼세피오르 산악 오두막은 이 모든 여행을 시작하기에 안성맞춤이다. 오두막 뒤에서 출발하면 어렵지 않게 뤼세달린 산까지 다다를 수 있다.
3 설레는 드라이브 여행 노르웨이 여행자들의 인기 코스 뤼세베겐 도로는 최고의 장관을 눈에 담을 수 있는 아찔한 드라이브 코스다. 27개의 급커브가 있는 도로를 조심스럽게 달리다 보면 어느새 약 950m의 정상에 닿는다. 이곳에 차를 세우고 셰라그산까지 하이킹하는 것도 좋은 방법이다. 1984년 개통된 도로는 대부분 1차선으로 이어졌다. 눈이 내리는 겨울철엔 위험할 수 있어 대체로 5월부터 10월까지만 개방된다.

Along the seven-hour route, you’ll see green valleys, fjords, waterfalls and mountain landscapes, peaking at 1,222m at Finse Station. The hop on, hop off service on the highest railway in Northern Europe means you can stop and enjoy day hikes, mountain biking and lakes along the way.
2 Activities for Nature Lovers Norwegians are one of the world’s great nature-loving peoples. Lean into their spirit by camping or kayaking in the Lysebotn area. Whether you’re visiting to do the Kjerag trek or to take a kayak trip around the area, Lysefjorden Lodge, a serviced mountain lodge with plenty for adults and kids alike, is a good place to start.
3 A Drive to Remember Norway’s popular tourist road Lysevegen is one of the most spectacular in the world. With 27 hairpin bends up the mountainside, it reaches a peak of about 950m. At the top, you can park your car and hike to Kjerag. Opened in 1984, the road passes through a narrow tunnel in the rock face. It is only open from May to October, depending on the snow.

튀르키예 남서부, 눈부신 비취색 물빛으로 반짝이는 에게해에 면한 보드룸은 수천 년간 대양 위를 오가는 이들을 품는 거대 도시였다. 고대 그리스 도시, ‘할리카르나소스’의 터전이었던 보드룸이 세상에 알려진 건 이곳에 신비로운 비밀이 있기 때문이다. 세계 7대 불가사의이자 최초의 영묘, ‘마우솔로스의 영묘’가 바로 보드룸에 위치했다. 기원전 353년에 사망한 것으로 추정되는 카리아의 왕 마우솔로스의 무덤으로 그의 아내이자 누이, 아르테미시아 2세가 건립했다. 영묘를 향한 관심은 압도적인 규모가 만들었다. 15세기, 십자군 성 요한 기사단이 보드룸에 성을 세울 때 건축자재로 쓴 것이 지진으로 무너진 영묘의 잔해였다는 이야기가 전해질 만큼 거대한 위용을 자랑한다. 왕과 함께 매장된 호화로운 보물, 남편의 유골을 화장하고 나온 재를 자신의 포도주에 섞어 마신 후 결국 그의 뒤를 따라간 여왕의 이야기가 더해져 이곳을 찾는 이들의 상상력을 자극한다.
할리카르나소스 시대의 영광을 고스란히 품은 보드룸은 2012년, 보드룸에 신공항이 세워지고 글로벌 호텔 체인이 속속 들어서기 전까진 취향 좋은 튀르키예 사람들이 꽁꽁 숨겨놓은 휴양지였다. 도시 곳곳을 원활하게 잇는 도로와 쇼핑센터, 레스토랑, 학교 등의 인프라가 갖춰지고 발전하면서 지금은 대도시에 사는 튀르키예 사람들이 앞다퉈 이주하는 도시가 됐다. 4년 전 보드룸으로 이주한 배우 에스라 아카야는 이 도시에서의 삶에 만족감을 느낀다고 말한다. “대도시를 떠나 보드룸으로 터전을 옮기기로 결심한 건 자연 속에서 아이들을 키우고 싶다는 마음 때문이었습니다. 이곳에서 자연과 농사에 대한 다큐멘터리를 촬영하기도 했죠. 지금은 도시에서 이주해온 이들이 제가 꿈꿔왔던 자연 친화적인 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 도와주는 컨설턴트로 일하고 있어요. 매일 저에게 이런 삶을 허락해준 행운의 별에게 감사하며 지냅니다.”
Set on the coast of the Aegean in southwestern Türkiye, Bodrum has been a major metropolis for millennia. Once known as
Halicarnassus, it’s home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the gigantic tomb of the Carian King Mausolus, who
died in 353 B.C. In the 15th century, the crusader Knights of St. John made Bodrum one of their strongholds, building an
imposing castle, and sourcing much of its building blocks from the ruins of the mausoleum, which had been toppled by
dramatic earthquakes between the years 1100-1400.
Bodrum shrank in size and importance, but remained a summer retreat for a few Turks in the know. But a good secret is
hard to keep, and its reputation and appeal swiftly grew, soon reaching a global audience. With the opening of a new
airport in 2012 and the arrival of many international hotel chains, Bodrum’s infrastructure improved so dramatically
that an exodus has begun from Türkiye’s big cities. Not satisfied with spending their summers here, the new generation
is opting to make it their year-round home. Esra Akkaya, a well-known actress who moved to Bodrum four years ago, says,
“The biggest factor in my decision to move from the big city was my desire to raise my child surrounded by nature. I
thank my lucky stars every day that I live here.”

보드룸은 ‘다양성’의 도시다. 약 215km에 달하는 긴 해안선 덕에 ‘튀르키예의 리비에라’로 불리는 이곳엔 각자의 개성이 뚜렷한 마을, 풍요로운 태양빛이 내리쬐는 해변이 넘친다. 종종 니스, 칸, 생트로페 등을 포함하는 지중해 연안의 코트다쥐르나 인근 그리스의 도데카네스제도와 비견되기도 하지만 이 도시 사람들은 보드룸이 다른 곳과 비교되기를 원치 않는다.
가장 먼저 향할 곳은 보드룸 타운. 마을에 들어서면 도시의 랜드마크, 보드룸성이 한눈에 들어온다. 15세기, 십자군 성 요한 기사단이 지은 이 요새는 ‘베드로의 성’으로도 불린다. 성 안엔 리모델링을 마친 후 재개관한 수중고고학 박물관이 들어서 있다. 고대 해상무역 시대의 흔적, 난파선이 게워낸 무수한 유물과 골동품 사이에서 카리아 공주 ‘아다’의 석관과 꽃문양이 새겨진 금관을 찾아볼 것. 기단만 남은 영묘와 에게해가 한 품에 안기는 그리스 야외극장을 차례로 둘러보다 보면 고대와 현대가 이질감 없이 어우러지는 보드룸의 매력에 자연스럽게 스며든다.
‘역사’라는 키워드를 빼고도 보드룸엔 보고 즐길 것이 많다. 마을에서 자동차로 약 30분 정도 떨어진 거리에 위치한 귀뮈슐리크는 보드룸 타운과 완전히 다른 분위기를 가진 보헤미안 마을이다. 몇 년 전까지만 해도 한적한 어촌이었던 이 동네는 석양빛으로 물든 바다를 눈에 담으며 지중해의 신선한 해산물 요리를 즐길 수 있는 휴양지가 됐다. 좀 더 세련되고 고급스러운 분위기를 누리고 싶다면 건너편의 얄르카바크로 향하자. 요트들이 정박한 항구 주변으로 쇼핑가와 레스토랑, 카페 등이 몰려 있다.
Bodrum has been described as the Turkish Riviera, and there are similarities — a long shore dotted with small towns, each with their own character, guaranteed sun and a bevy of beaches, but it defies comparison. Bodrum is not only the name of the entire peninsula but also, rather confusingly, that of its largest town.
This is where the historic riches are centered, including the main draw: Bodrum Castle, which now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The museum features stunning displays about shipwrecks and ancient marine commerce, countless relics and antiquities such as the sarcophagus and gold floral crown of Carian Princess Ada. Past and present combine with Turkish pop stars performing at its ancient classical outdoor theater, which can seat around 13,000 people, and ballet performances that use the Castle as a majestic backdrop.
For a very different vibe, head to the bohemian enclave of Gümüşlük, which once stood as a walled town known as Myndos, about a 30-minute drive away. Until a few years ago, this was a quiet fishing village with a small island enclosed by a bay, but it has become well-known for its amazing sunsets and the laid-back seafood restaurants that line its shores, including Arriba and Mimoza, as well as Limon Cafe, in the hills above. Further north on the peninsula lies Yalıkavak, which in recent years has become the luxury hub of the region. Its marina features a number of high-end shops and branches of famous eateries such as Novikov and Zuma.

미식가에게 보드룸은 축복의 땅. 농작물이 ‘맛있게’ 자라기에 알맞은 기후와 질 좋은 토양, 해산물로 가득한 바다가 끊임없이 먹거리를 내어주기 때문이다. 마을마다 각기 다른 요일에 열리는 마켓에 가면 과일, 채소, 허브와 갓 잡아 올린 생선들이 화려한 빛깔을 자랑하며 펼쳐져 있다. 이곳에서 장을 볼 기회가 있다면 에게해의 심해에 사는 ‘아키아’를 사서 먹어보자. 큼직하고 통통한 전갱이과 생선으로 담백한 맛이 일품이다.
에게해의 정수를 맛볼 수 있는 정식은 수프와 샐러드 그리고 지중해식 전채 요리인 ‘메제’로 시작한다. 메인 요리인 ‘발르크(생선 요리)’엔 아니스 향이 물씬 나는 술 ‘라키’를 곁들여 즐겨보자. ‘코모도르’와 ‘게미바시’는 보드룸에서 풍미 좋은 라키로 유명한 레스토랑이다. 산지의 싱싱한 올리브를 제대로 맛보고 싶다면 비테즈 마을에 있는 ‘보드룸운 메제지시’로 향할 것. 에게해 북쪽 지역에서 생산한 올리브를 갓 짜낸 오일로 만든 음식들을 선보인다. 건너편에 자리한 아이스크림 가게, ‘비테즈’는 지역 식재료로 만든 수제 아이스크림과 셔벗으로 현지인 사이에서 인기가 높다.
최근 보드룸의 미식 신에선 지역 농장과 과수원에서 직접 식재료를 공수해 창의적인 요리를 선보이는 셰프들의 파인다이닝이 급부상하고 있다. 지속 가능한 미식을 추구하는 ‘데레쾨이 로칸타스’, 셰프의 아이디어와 감각으로 탄생한 독창적인 요리를 식탁에 내는 ‘오르포즈’가 어디에서도 맛보지 못한 개성 넘치는 지중해 코스 요리를 선사할 것이다.
튀르키예는 고대부터 이어져온 전통적인 와인 산지로 유명하다. 보드룸에 자리한 카르나스 빈야드에선 지속 가능한 농법으로 질 높은 시라즈와 진판델 와인을 비롯해 올리브오일과 치즈를 선보이고 있다. 보드룸 타운의 밀타 마리나에 자리한 ‘수블라 와인 숍’에선 에게해 북쪽의 갈리폴리반도에서 생산한 와인을 비롯해 다양한 튀르키예 와인을 맛볼 수 있다.
Bodrum is blessed with a climate and soil that nurtures amazing produce, and its waters teem with fish such as the huge akya (leerfish). The local produce is displayed in precarious piles at the many outdoor food markets held on different days in different towns. All this results in delicious seasonal fare, where ingredients are king.
Aegean cuisine is famed for its meze, or small plates of communal dishes that are often served before a main course of balık (fish), accompanied by Türkiye’s famous ouzo-like aniseed-flavored tipple, raki. Head to Bodrum’un Mezecisi, a restaurant in the town of Bitez, to sample a selection of their gourmet dishes made with Northern Aegean olive oil. On a hot day, head across the street to Bitez Dondurma to indulge in delicious ice cream and sorbets made from fresh local ingredients.
Inspired by the riches of Bodrum’s colorful orchards and farms, chef-driven dining has taken off. For the finest examples of this locally sourced and very creative fare, head to the hills to try Dereköy Lokantası, which offers sustainable fine-dining, or to Orfoz where nothing is on the menu but everything is on the table — everyone is served the same remarkable tasting menu featuring seafood creations with such ingredients as clams and snails.
The local produce also results in amazing beverages, both with and without alcohol. The regional variety of tangerines, known as mandalina, feature in the peninsula’s favorite cocktail: the Satsuma Vodka. Grapes naturally grow here, and Türkiye has an ancient tradition of winemaking that dates back millennia. Today, Karnas Vineyards produces excellent, sustainable local Syrahs and Zinfandels, as well as olive oil and cheeses.

‘쾨이 카흐발트스’는 튀르키예의 전통과 정서를 관통하는 키워드다. ‘시골식 아침 식사’를 뜻하는 말로 오이, 토마토, 허브, 다양한 종류의 치즈와 올리브오일로 소박하게 차린 아침 밥상을 떠올리면 된다. 화덕에 구워 투박하게 뜯은 빵과 보드룸의 특산품 만달리나 마멀레이드에 루비처럼 붉게 빛나는 홍차를 곁들이면 튀르키예 사람들의 삶에 한달음에 닿는다.
보드룸 근교, 에트림의 ‘도아’ 레스토랑에선 쾨이 카흐발트스를 정통으로 경험할 수 있다. 산마을인 아나톨리아에 위치한 이 식당은 숲과 농장으로 둘러싸인 전원 풍광이 음식만큼이나 감동을 선사한다. 배를 든든히 채웠다면 에트림 마을을 찾은 진짜 목적에 집중할 차례다. 튀르키예 카펫과 베틀로 짜 만든 평직물 ‘킬림’의 모든 것을 볼 수 있는 에트림 할르로 향할 것. 1980년대부터 에트림을 ‘공예 마을’로 지켜온 바숄 패밀리는 지역 주민과 함께 킬림의 전통을 잇는다. 고전적인 기하학문양부터 현대적인 디자인을 더한 것까지 모두 마을 주민의 안마당에 있는 베틀에서 나온 작품들. 마을 곳곳을 천천히 산책하며 기웃대다 보면 목화와 고치에서 실을 뽑아내는 과정부터 천연 염색, 직조까지 킬림이 만들어지는 모든 과정을 눈에 담을 수 있다.
보드룸에서는 무엇이든 가능하다. 지루함을 느끼는 것만 불가능할 뿐이다. 해변과 산, 클럽과 도서관, 고대의 흔적을 품은 폐허부터 현대적인 미술관까지 모두 품은 도시. 발굴되지 않은 유물처럼, 아직 드러나지 않은 보드룸의 매력도 여행자들에게 발견되기를 기다리고 있다.
About a half-hour drive from Bodrum town, the Anatolian mountain village of Etrim is like a living museum. Head out early and enjoy an incomparable traditional breakfast at the family-run Etrim Doğa restaurant. After experiencing authentic Turkish cuisine and culture there, move on to the restaurant’s sister enterprise, Etrim Halı. It has been maintaining another quintessentially Turkish tradition: the dying craft of weaving Turkish carpets and flat-weave kilims. Since 1980, the Başol family has been committed to preserving this craft for future generations. They source the carpets directly from locals who weave them on looms in the courtyards of their homes. At the store, choose from piles of new or antique carpets featuring classic geometric patterns, many with symbols holding hidden meanings. The wool or silk carpets are often made from hand spun threads that are colored using natural dyes.
It seems nothing is impossible in Bodrum, except perhaps boredom. From beaches to mountains, nightclubs to libraries, and ancient ruins to modern galleries, Bodrum awaits to reveal its myriad charms.

5명의 지역 사업가가 시작한 콰이차이홍 프로젝트가 이 지역에 활기를 불어넣었다.쿠알라룸푸르 중심부, 잘란 프탈링에 위치한 차이나타운은 1870년대에 중국 광둥인과 하카 이주민이 주석 광산으로 몰려들면서 생겨났다. 그러다 1980년대에 광산업이 소멸하고 도시가 현대화되면서 사람이 더 이상 찾지 않는 곳이 됐다. 40년이 지나서야 시작된 도시재생사업은 차이나타운의 주변 거리인 잘란 프탈링, 잘란 술탄을 비롯해 그 뒷골목들을 새로운 모습으로 바꾸어놓았다. 야시장의 길거리 음식은 물론이고 화려한 밤을 즐길 장소와 예술로 가득한 이 지역은 그리 크지 않아서 걸어 다니며 둘러보기에 적당하다. 뉴욕이나 샌프란시스코, 로스앤젤레스는 물론 방콕과 싱가포르에도 차이나타운이 있지만 수많은 해외 이주 노동자가 밀려드는 쿠알라룸푸르의 차이나타운은 좀 더 구분된다. 이곳은 중국의 사원, 인도의 절을 비롯해 다민족의 식문화가 섞인 음식, 차별화된 문화를 즐길 수 있는 장소들이 자리 잡고 있어 쿠알라룸푸르 내에서도 특별한 장소로 꼽힌다.
The street Jalan Petaling, the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, was born in the 1870s as a settlement for Cantonese and Hakka migrants from China during the tin mining rush. When the industry declined in the 1980s and the city started modernizing, the area fell into disrepair. It’s only some 40 years on that urban revitalization projects have facelifted Chinatown’s historical lanes: Jalan Petaling, Jalan Sultan and their back alleys. Today, this compact district pulsates with street food, nightlife and the arts, making it a perfect place to explore on foot. It’s not uncommon for Chinatowns around the world — from San Francisco to Singapore — to see their historic alleys sprout trendy dining and drinking spots. But with Chinese shrines, an Indian temple and an influx of foreign migrant workers, Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown maintains a multiethnic appeal that makes it a unique spot even within the city.

잘란 프탈링 맞은편에 위치한 콰이차이홍 앨리는 SNS 명소 중 한 곳이다. 광둥어로 ‘작은 유령의 길’이라는 이름을 지닌 이곳은 한때 황폐했지만 2019년, 중국의 이민자와 갱들로 활기를 얻던 1960년대 차이나타운의 옛 모습을 벽화로 담아내면서 전성기를 누리게 됐다. 1900년대 초반에 세워진 가로등을 비롯해 쿠알라룸푸르의 옛 모습이 보존돼 있다. 골목에 줄지어 자리한 스피크이지바와 카페에 앉아 여유로운 시간을 보내보자.
Tucked behind a row of colorful shophouses that front Jalan Petaling, this once dilapidated back alley was restored in 2019 (its name translates from Cantonese to “Little Ghost Lane”). Heritage themed mural art and installations celebrate the quarter’s 1960s heyday of Chinese migrants and gangs. There’s even an original lamppost from the early 1900s.

Potted plants, dark wooden floor tiles and tree roots wedged into the walls grab the attention as much as the plates of Italian Chow Mein (scrumptious stir-fried spaghetti tossed in fiery rendang sauce); nasi lemak (a Malaysian rice dish garnished with coconut oil, peanuts, fried anchovies and fiery sambal sauce) served with pancakes instead of rice; and East-meets-West burgers.

Designed by Dutch architectural firm Keyes and Dowdeswell, this iconic colonial hotel built in 1932 marks the southwest limits of Chinatown. Set on a hilltop facing Kuala Lumpur’s old Moorish train station, the tall white Roman columns and chiseled cornices above the curved driveway give it a sense of old-world grandeur. Restored and included in the Autograph Collection of iconic heritage hotels, the Majestic was registered as a national heritage site.

After being devastated by a fire in 2002, the former Rex Cinema, one of the country’s first movie theaters, finally reopened in 2019. The original four-story exposed brick structure was transformed into Jalan Sultan’s new community hub for art and culture. It now houses an ice cream shop-cum-tattoo parlor, the spacious bookstore BookXcess and rooftop dining with perfect city views. On the ground floor, Back Ground serves inventive food and drinks — think local spins on pasta and pizza as well as long happy hours.

Housed in a building built over a century ago, Jao Tim is located in the heart of Chinatown on Jalan Sultan. The space is considered one of the best spots to catch performances of local jazz, soul, R&B and duets. The proprietor, jazz connoisseur Jon Teo, gave Jao Tim its name (Cantonese for “hotel”) as a tribute to its original function. The Art Deco-styled venue hosts the intimate Table Lamp Concerts, great occasions for sipping a cocktail while some of Kuala Lumpur’s best musicians do their magic beside your table.

Meaning “muddy estuary” in Malay, the city of Kuala Lumpur was born at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. After a yearslong RM4.4-billion (about $955 million) government effort to rehabilitate the Klang River banks in the city center, new riverside cafés, biking paths, fountains and light shows have turned the area into a tourist attraction. 뱀을 닮은 머리와 뾰족한 부리를 가진 가마우지. 제2의 아마존으로 불리는 토르투게로국립공원에선 300여 종의 새가 서식한다. 
초식동물인 세발가락나무늘보는 눈 주위에 너구리와 비슷한 무늬가 있어 두발가락나무늘보와 쉽게 구별된다. COSTA RICA
역동적인 날갯짓으로 아름다운 자태를 뽐내는 케찰. 화려한 빛깔의 깃털을 가진 이 새는 고대 아즈텍인에게 ‘신’으로 여겨졌다.

틸라란산맥의 비탈에 자리한 몬테베르데 마을은 ‘몬테베르데 운무림 생태 보존지역’의 베이스캠프. 코스타리카 생태관광의 중심지이며 세계에서 생물다양성이 높은 곳 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 이른 아침, 베일처럼 드리워진 안개와 낮게 깔린 구름을 뚫고 숲 안에 들어서면 다른 세계가 펼쳐진다. 고대 아즈텍인을 매혹한 녹청색 꼬리를 길게 늘어뜨린 케찰, 테니스 라켓을 닮은 꽁지깃을 가진 벌잡이새사촌 등 근사한 외양의 새들이 방문객의 시선을 사로잡는다. 초록빛 윤기와 촉촉한 공기로 가득한 이끼 숲길을 탐색하다 보면 무성한 착생식물로 뒤덮인 피쿠스 나무도 눈에 띈다. 야생의 절정이 찾아오는 밤엔 전문 가이드와 함께 나설 것. 몬테베르데 엑스퍼트 투어에선 아구티 보호구역을 둘러보는 야간 산책 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 황혼이 숲에 내려앉는 시간, 새끼를 보호하기 위해 굴 입구를 지키고 서 있는 붉은다리타란툴라를 지나 짐승의 체취가 가득한 숲길을 천천히 탐색하자. 운이 좋으면 달빛 아래에서 은회색 갑옷을 반짝이며 덤불을 헤집고 있는 아홉띠아르마딜로의 은밀한 식사 시간을 엿볼 수 있다.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Monteverde is a center of Costa Rica’s thriving ecotourism scene. Situated on the slopes of the Tilarán Mountain Range, the town is home to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, one of the most biodiverse places in the world and a great introduction to the country’s wildlife and nature. The tropical cloud forest is where visitors can walk through a veil of fog and low-hanging clouds to discover wondrous birds such as resplendent quetzals (once prized by the Aztecs for their long iridescent greenish-blue tail feathers) and motmots, which have tennis-racket shaped tail feathers. The moisture-laden climate supports the growth of an enormous variety of plant life, and visitors can see ficus trees clad in bromeliads and orchids. For those seeking an evening adventure, take a guided night walk with Monteverde Experts on tours through the Aguti Reserve. In the twilight, orange-kneed tarantulas steadfastly guard their burrows, protecting their young. If you’re lucky, you’ll spy the silver-gray armor-like skin of a nine-banded armadillo as it scurries in search of ants.

신비로운 운무림을 탐험한 후엔 카리브해의 품에 안길 차례다. 코스타리카에서 가장 아름다운 해변으로 꼽히는 플라야마누엘안토니오를 품은 마누엘안토니오 마을에선 해수욕과 함께 야생 숲 탐사도 즐길 수 있다. 마누엘안토니오국립공원 얘기다. 코스타리카에서 가장 작은 규모(약 6.8km²)로 알려진 이곳은 동시에 ‘가장 많은 방문객이 찾는 곳’이기도 하다.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Leaving the cloud forest behind, head to the seaside town of Manuel Antonio on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, where pristine white beaches meet lush jungles. The idyllic beach town is home to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the smallest (about 680 hectares), but most visited, of Costa Rica’s national parks where sloth sightings are common.
코스타리카를 상징하는 국가 공식 동물로 지정된 호프만두발가락나무늘보와 갈색목세발가락나무늘보는 이곳의 슈퍼스타. 세크로피아 나무 아래에서 얼기설기 뻗은 가지 사이를 살피면 세상 모르고 잠든 세발가락나무늘보의 앙증맞은 자태를 볼 수 있다. 하루 수면 약 20시간, 세계에서 가장 잠이 많은 이 동물은 깨어 있을 때 기상천외한 모습으로 종종 발견된다. 운이 좋으면 한 팔은 머리 위 나뭇가지에 걸친 채 그 아래쪽 가지에 엉덩이를 얹은 자태, 혹은 원숭이처럼 거꾸로 매달린 진귀한 모습을 만날 수 있다. 좀 더 가까이에서 나무늘보의 체취와 온기를 느끼고 싶다면 라 포르투나 나무늘보 보호구역으로 향하자. 코스타리카에서 가장 이름 높은 야생동물보호 단체인 프로옉토 아시스에서 운영하는 곳으로, 구조된 나무늘보를 야생으로 돌려보내기 전까지 치료와 보호를 담당한다. 직접적인 접촉은 엄격하게 금지되어 있지만 센터 안에서 나무늘보의 습성을 배우거나 자원봉사를 통해 활동가, 연구가들과 함께 일하며 나무늘보의 매력에 깊이 빠지는 시간을 경험해볼 수 있다.
In a country celebrated for slow travel, the world’s sleepiest mammal has become a tourism pinup. Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths and brown-throated three-toed sloths, two of the national symbols of Costa Rica, are what most visitors are keen to see at the park. Look to the high branches of a Cecropia tree for a chance to spot a three-toed sloth asleep, distinguishable from its two-toed cousin by the dark fur around the eyes and mouth. Often discovered in unusual positions — hanging by one arm, with its bottom resting on the branch below, or upside down — these creatures sleep for up to 20 hours a day, turning narcolepsy into an art form. For a more intimate encounter, head to Sloth Sanctuary La Fortuna near the tourist area of Arenal, featuring a volcano and lake of the same name. At the sanctuary, run by Proyecto Asis, one of the country’s wildlife conservation organizations, visitors can learn about caring for rescued sloths and rehabilitating them to the wild. Although direct contact is strictly prohibited, devotees can volunteer for a few hours and work alongside a naturalist.

Tortuguero National Park
For adventure seekers looking for a remote wildlife experience, Tortuguero National Park awaits. Located on the Caribbean coast, the water-logged flood plain of 19,000 hectares is only accessible by small aircraft or boats. Exploring its canals and waterways, visitors may spot a spectacled caiman, or an otter before it dives. Amid this lush scenery are strawberry poison dart frogs, and spider monkeys give aerial shows in the monkey-pot trees.

But the main attraction in Tortuguero, which means “region of turtles,” is the endangered green sea turtle. From July to October, some 22,000 arrive at a nesting site on a protected beach hidden by a rainforest. Visitors can watch female turtles digging a nest to lay over 100 eggs. 짖는원숭이 약 5km 떨어진 거리에서도 이 동물의 울음소리를 생생하게 들을 수 있다. 꼬리로 물건을 잡을 수 있어 마치 팔다리가 5개인 듯 현란하게 나뭇가지를 붙잡곤 한다. ‘O’ 모양으로 생긴 코로 1.5km 정도 떨어진 곳에 있는 잘 익은 과일과 견과류 냄새를 맡을 수 있다.
독화살개구리 수컷 독화살개구리는 알을 돌보거나 올챙이를 등에 업고 옮겨가며 수영을 가르친다. 독화살개구리란 이름은 개구리 피부에서 나온 분비물을 이용해 사냥용 독화살을 만들었던 남미 부족에서 유래했다.

Manatee are believed to have inspired the legends surrounding mermaids. Scientists believe that 60 million years ago, manatee were four-footed land mammals, so it’s no wonder that they’re often called sea cows.
Silky anteaters are the smallest of the species, although they can eat up to 5,000 ants a day. To keep hydrated they lick rainwater and dew from leaves.
Blue morpho butterflies are the newest national symbol of Costa Rica. They use their feet to decide what to eat and where to lay eggs or take a nap.
Howler monkeys are the loudest of all monkeys and can be heard at distances of up to 5km. Their tails are prehensile and are used like a fifth limb to grip branches. With wide nostrils, they can smell ripe fruit and nuts over 1.5km away.
Poison dart frogs share parenting responsibilities, with the male taking care of the eggs and then transporting the tadpoles on his back for swimming lessons. Their name comes from the South American tribes who used secretions from the frog’s skin to poison darts used for hunting.

The soft mist that covered the wild, chemical-free orchards of this organic farm has given way to an unusually sunny day for this time of year in Belgium. I spent the morning traversing spiky tomato plants, dodging wild thistles and tasting a razor-cut purple turnip straight from the ground. Then, as my feet sank into the fertile soil, I listened carefully to the words of Dries Delanote, the visionary owner of the farm, "Human beings must remember that we live in paradise, but without forgetting that we are not alone in it.”

Proponents of sustainable gastronomy, they also strive to produce the least amount of food waste possible. My trip to this inventive couple’s restaurant for a plant-based feast coincided with a visit from chef Emile van der Staak of the two Michelin starred restaurant De Nieuwe Winkel. The four-handed menu crafted by Decloedt and Baerten surprised us with dishes such as a succulent walnut pâté, accompanied by pickled vegetables and fruit, with a texture almost identical to foie gras; or a sunflower seed risotto with nettle and mustard seeds, with its electric green color that wowed us. It was fascinating to see that it was possible to convert the dark hue of sunflower seeds into an olive green of the highest intensity with avant-garde techniques such as alkaline cooking. If gastrobotany is teaching us anything, it’s the importance of vegetables, the seasonality and quality of the harvests, and the art of rescuing the use of unknown and forgotten varieties. We toasted Humus × Hortense with the botanical cocktails prepared by Baerten, also a sommelier, who was capable of successfully combining more than 20 garden herbs to craft an inspiring artisanal liqueur. Botanical cuisine is undoubtedly gaining followers — devotees of a global movement whose ultimate goal is to work for the future of human beings and the planet. Midunu: In the Ewe language, midunu means “Let’s eat,” an invitation this company, based in Accra, Ghana, makes in the form of artisanal chocolates. This invitation is also extended in private dining experiences that celebrate the cultural and culinary heritage of Africa.
No Bones: This plant-powered restaurant in the coastal town of Byron Bay, Australia, pays homage to its ancestors. The vegan bar and kitchen celebrates fresh vegetables, fruits and native species, inviting diners to “Save the Earth, one Brussels sprout at a time.”

Choose to visit places committed to respecting and preserving nature as well as the well-being of locals. Palau, an archipelago in the western Pacific, is one such example. It recently started asking all visitors to take an environmental pledge. Eighty percent of the country’s waters have been designated as marine reserves, and certain sunscreens are banned in order to protect its coral reefs. Travelers looking for a more sustainable urban experience may want to check out the Sustainable Cities Index, based on 12 metrics, including greenhouse gas emissions, green transportation and climate change resilience. Nordic cities have topped the list for years, but there’s been a strong showing from Asian countries. Seoul is currently ranked 18th out of 70 cities, up seven spots from last year.

An important consideration for every eco-conscious traveler is visiting restaurants that use environmentally friendly methods to prepare their food. In São Paulo, Brazil, the innovative restaurant Corrutela distinguished itself by winning the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award. Not only is 40% of all the energy they use collected from solar panels, they also grind their own corn using a millstone, make their own chocolate from cacao beans and compost all their organic waste. Since 2020, Michelin has recognized restaurants pursuing sustainable gastronomy with its Green Star award. The main considerations for earning a Green Star are the use of seasonal local produce, food waste management and eco-friendly marketing. Bangkok’s Haoma is a Michelin Green Star restaurant that has taken a stand against Southeast Asia’s serious waste problem. In addition to growing its own fruits and vegetables, the restaurant even farms its own fish — all with the goal of reducing its carbon footprint during the distribution process.

A recent trend in ecotourism is to stay as far off the ground as possible while immersing yourself in nature so as to minimize environmental impact. At Sacha Lodge, in Ecuador, the rainforest can be explored from the 30m-high Canopy Walk, while at Nyungwe National Park, in Rwanda, an even more dizzying canopy experience awaits, accessed via a suspension bridge some 70m above ground. Another great ecotourism destination is the Kinabatangan, a region near the eastern edge of Sabah, a Malaysian state on Borneo. After being designated a wildlife sanctuary in 2005, the Lower Kinabatangan region has been strictly managed, and visitors can now see wildlife like Bornean orangutans and pygmy elephants, the world’s smallest elephant.

산양관광일주도로를 달리다가 만나는 전망 좋은 곳에 서면 섬들이 옹기종기 떠 있는 다도해의 절경과 마주한다. 통영엔 섬이 많다. 대개 151개로 알려져 있지만 통영시는 2005년 “알고 보니 192개다”라고 발표했고, 2년 후엔 250개, 지금은 570여 개라고 공표하고 있다. 매번 바뀌는 변덕스러운 수치가 흥미로웠다. 몇 년 전 아마존을 탐사하다가 “지구상에 아직 발견되지 않은 생물종이 무한하다”는 얘기를 들었을 때만큼. 섬의 개수가 자꾸 바뀌는 건 물때 때문이다. 만조에만 모습을 드러내는, 그래서 그때에만 비로소 섬이 되는 암석이 셈의 변수가 된다. 이름도, 사람도 없는 무인 도서의 가치는 바닷속이 알려준다. 원시의 생태계가 거기에 있기 때문이다. 어쩌면 많은 한국인이 “이미 몇 번 가봐서 잘 알고 있다”고 자부하는 관광도시 통영이 우리에게 보여준 건 수면 위로 뾰족한 머리만 드러낸 암석들처럼 극히 일부가 아닐까? 발견되지 않은 것을 꼭꼭 숨겨놓은 이 도시가 조금씩 신비로워 보이기 시작했다.
Tongyeong has an ever-changing number of islands. There were believed to be around 151, but in 2005 the city announced it had discovered up to 192; and then two years later, after further searching, this number climbed to 250. Currently, the Tongyeong website reports over 570 islands. This surprising number piqued my curiosity. Apparently, the sea is the reason the number keeps going up. It all comes down to rocks that only reveal themselves and turn into islands at high tide. These nameless, uninhabited islands have value as homes to primeval ecosystems. Many Koreans boast after a few visits to the city that they know Tongyeong like the back of their hand. But could it be that just like the tips of the rocks that poke above the water’s surface, Tongyeong only reveals a small part of its wonders? With troves of hidden and undiscovered delights, the city can begin to seem rather mystical.

섬 안에서 섬 구경
통영엔 ‘섬인데 섬이 아닌’ 섬이 있다. 물이 차면 육지와 떨어지고 빠지면 연결되는 미륵도 얘기다. 지금은 운하 아래 뚫은 해저터널과 통영대교 덕에 쉬이 닿을 수 있는 미륵도 곳곳의 높은 데에 오르면 통영을 수호하는 군함처럼 도열한 섬들의 자태가 한눈에 들어온다. 그 장면 앞에 서기 위해 산양관광일주도로에 올랐다. 길이 약 24km의 해안도로로 바다와 산, 한적한 어촌 풍경이 눈을 가득 채우는 드라이브 길이다. 도로를 달리다 보면 자연스레 전망 좋은 터를 만난다. 해가 쨍쨍할 땐 숲이 제격. 섬 한가운데 봉긋 솟은 미륵산엔 통영 사람들이 아끼는 편백숲길이 있다. 고개를 뒤로 홱 젖혀야 꼭대기가 보이는 편백나무가 사정없이 내뿜는 피톤치드를 흠뻑 마시며 천천히 걷다 보면 곧 미륵불이 바다를 향해 서 있는 전망대가 나타난다.
Island Sightseeing From an Island
Tongyeong is home to an “island that is not really an island.” This is Mireukdo, which is separated from the mainland at high tide but connected when the water recedes. Nowadays, it is easy to access the island thanks to Tongyeong Bridge and an undersea tunnel created below the Tongyeong Canal. Climb up to the high points dotted around Mireukdo and you can look over the array of islands. I traveled up Sanyang Ilju-ro Road to do just this.
If you visit Mireukdo while the sun is blazing, it’s a good idea to hide out in the cypress forest on Mireuksan Mountain. Stroll at a leisurely pace as you breathe in the phytoncides emanating from trees so tall you have to tilt your head all the way back to see their tops.

미륵불과 야자수, 주변 섬들이 한눈에 담기는 전망대 풍경 석불상을 등지고 그 앞에 서면 낮에도 자욱한 해무 사이로 죽도와 화도, 한산도가 수묵화처럼 펼쳐진다. 미륵불과 야자수, 석불상 앞에서 타오르는 향 내음이 만드는 기묘한 분위기에 감각이 몽롱해질 때쯤 숲을 빠져나와 다시 도로에 올랐다. 당포성지는 미륵도의 속살을 들여다보기 좋은 곳. 석축 위에 서면 장군의 투구를 닮은 장군봉 아래 당포항의 서정적인 어촌 풍경이 시야에 든다. 성을 쌓은 이는 고려의 최영 장군, 이름을 널리 알린 이는 이곳에서 두 번째 승전보를 울린 조선의 이순신 장군이다. 아득히 먼 과거는 잘 와닿지 않지만 곤리도와 추도, 쑥섬 등이 옹기종기 모인 풍경은 마음을 빼앗는다. 그 앞, 가두리양식장 아래엔 어떤 맛 좋은 해산물이 탐스럽게 살을 찌우고 있을까? 그런 생각이나 하며 미륵도의 클라이맥스, 달아공원으로 향한다. 해 질 녘 미륵도의 산양관광일주도로를 달리는 차들은 약속이라도 한 듯 이곳으로 모여든다. 태양이 서서히 기울며 섬, 바다와 차례로 몸을 섞는 시간이다. 해가 달궈진 쇠처럼 붉어지다가 수면과 만나 연보랏빛이 될 때까지, 어느 누구도 분위기를 깨는 소음을 내지 않았다. 오직 자연만 기척을 내는 그 고요함이 좋아서 바다가 달 아래 은백색으로 물들 때까지 언덕 위를 서성였다.
You soon come to a lookout point where a Maitreya Buddha statue faces the sea. Stand in front of the stone figure to see the islands of Jukdo, Hwado and Hansando stretch out in front of you, like a landscape painting amid the sea fog that remains thick, even during the day. The Dangposeong Fortress ruins are a great spot for viewing Mireukdo. Standing on top of fallen stones, the scene consists of the lyrical fishing villages of Dangpo Harbor just below Janggunbong (Admiral’s) Peak, named for its resemblance to an admiral’s helmet. I head toward Dara Park where drivers along Sanyang Ilju-ro Road all gather around sunset, as if they had a silent agreement to do so. As the sun slowly sinks while the islands and the ocean blur into a single entity, no one makes a sound from the moment the sky glows red until it gradually fades to a light purple on the horizon. Out of appreciation for this tranquility, I lingered until the sea became tinged with a silvery white under the light of the moon.

어부들의 술상, 다찌엔 도시에서 보기 힘든 독특한 해산물이 가득하다.바다의 맛
통영은 해산물을 주제로 하는 미식의 최전선이다. 그 한복판으로 단숨에 내달리고 싶다면 어부의 뒤를 쫓자. 뱃사람의 술상, 다찌는 술을 시키면 안주가 따라 나오는 통영식 술집을 뜻한다. 어원을 찾는 이들은 선술집을 뜻하는 일본어 ‘다찌노미’에서 왔다는 설, ‘다 있지’를 줄여 ‘다찌’로 부른다는 설을 들지만 그것보다 더 먼저 알아야 할 중요한 사실이 있다. 미각의 모험보다 익숙한 맛을 더 선호한다면 다찌집의 문을 열기 전에 각오를 다지고 들어설 것. 술상 위에 부려지는 해산물의 모양과 맛은 생각보다 훨씬 더 독특하고 생경하다. 대개 이모로 불리는 다찌집의 사장님들이 내는 음식은 어제까지 바다에서 시퍼렇게 살아 있던 생물들. 자연스럽게 계절의 산물이 식탁 위에 펼쳐진다. 전복회, 멍게, 해삼이나 장어회, 각종 생선구이는 기꺼이 젓가락이 향하는 싱그러운 전주. 눈알과 내장을 고스란히 간직한 채로 접시 위에 오른 꼴뚜기 회를 지나 참기름을 한 바퀴 휘두른 해삼 내장에 이르렀을 때 상 위에서 분주하게 휘둘렀던 젓가락을 잠시 멈췄다. 자신을 “이 다찌집 20년 단골”로 소개한 옆자리에 앉은 시인은 술을 많이 시키거나 특별한 단골손님에게만 낸다는 진귀한 안주 앞에서 잔뜩 신이 난 모습이었다. 가리비로 맛을 낸 잡채를 휘적이며 꼴뚜기의 서슬 퍼런 눈, 해삼의 싯누런 내장을 잠시 외면하다가 용기를 냈다. “새로운 맛의 세계가 열렸다”는 소회를 적고 싶지만 솔직히 식감과 맛향이 조금 낯설었다. 평생 경험하지 못할 수도 있는 해산물 요리를 맛봤다는 사실에 만족하며 남은 술과 함께 열 몇 개쯤 되는 접시를 싹싹 비우고 나왔다.

Tongyeong is at the forefront of seafood gastronomy. If you wish to park yourself in the middle of it all, just follow the sailors to a dajji, a Tongyeong style pub where the sailors go to drink and all the appropriate side dishes are served at your table when you order alcohol. Most believe the term dajji comes from the Japanese tachinomi, which means “standing pub.” It was shortened to just dajji in Korean. If you’re not the kind of person who enjoys gastronomical adventures, you might want to strengthen your resolve before opening the door to a dajji. Both the appearance and flavor of the seafood that filled my table were tougher than I expected. The food produced by the owners of this establishment, who are all simply referred to as “auntie,” consists of sea creatures that were alive in the ocean just a day earlier. A seasonal spread was brought to my table.
The course begins with raw abalone, sea pineapple, sea cucumber and raw eel, followed by a number of grilled fish dishes. The next offering is beka squid served complete with the eyes and innards, and the meal concludes with sea cucumber viscera doused in sesame oil. Initially, I avoided the glaring eyes of the squid and the vivid yellow sea cucumber viscera, moving around the japchae (glass noodles) laced with scallops, but eventually I shut my eyes tight and took the plunge. The texture and taste were completely foreign to me, but I thought I should be satisfied with the fact that I had tried something rare that most people would normally never be able to taste.

통영 지역 특산주, ‘건축가가 빚은 막걸리’를 만드는 양조장 전경 
통영의 제철 식재료로 만든 요리를 내는 다이닝, 야소주반의 안주. ‘건축가가 빚은 막걸리’ 양조장과 함께 자리했다. 통영의 ‘술맛’에 취하고 싶다면 미륵도 야소골로 향하자. 최근 지역 특산주가 된 ‘건축가가 빚은 막걸리(이하 ‘건막’)’의 주조장이 이곳에 있다. 술을 빚는 박준우 대표는 건축가라는 직업의 강점을 십분 살려 철저한 설계와 끈질긴 시도 끝에 원하는 풍미를 찾아냈다. 건축 재료의 배합 비율에서 아이디어를 착안, 130여 회의 실험을 거쳐 도출한 32번째 제조법이 현재 시판 중인 ‘건막’의 맛이다. 유기농 쌀과 해풍 맞은 토종 누룩, 옅은 짠맛이 밴 섬의 지하수를 느리게 발효시킨 스파클링 막걸리의 청량한 식감과 과일의 단맛을 닮은 풍미는 통영의 해산물과 기가 막힌 조화를 이룬다. 그의 아내 김은하 대표가 운영하는 다이닝 ‘야소주반’에선 한 달에 딱 618병만 내놓는 이 한정판 전통주를 제철 식재료와 창의적인 레시피로 구성된 코스 요리와 함께 양껏 맛볼 수 있다. 간밤의 술자리로 속풀이가 필요한 이들은 서호시장의 ‘시락국(시래깃국)’ 골목으로 간다. 장어 대가리로 깊은 맛을 내는 시락국은 통영 미식의 시작과 끝. 시장 상인이 “그 집 할매가 열아홉 살 때부터 시락국집을 했어. 지금은 여든도 훨씬 넘었지 아마” 하고 추천해준 식당을 찾아 명물 앞에 앉았다. 아침 7시. 맑고 담백한 국물이 오장육부를 타고 몸 구석구석으로 흘러 들어가는 감각이 명료하게 느껴진다. 다찌의 ‘기’에 눌려 주춤했던 마음이 시락국의 따뜻한 위로 덕에 부드럽게 풀린다.
If you’re looking to get drunk on the taste of Tongyeong makgeolli (rice wine), head toward Yasogol Village on Mireukdo Island where the makgeolli brewery is located. “Makgeolli Made by an Architect” (called geonmak) has recently become a regional specialty on the island, and architect and chief brewer, Park Junu, sought to discover the taste that would best capture the merits of his profession. Park’s idea came from the mixing ratios for building materials, and the geonmak on sale was the 32nd recipe after 130 attempts. This sparkling makgeolli made from the slow fermentation of organic rice, native yeast touched by the sea breeze and the slightly saline underground island water, has a clear and cool texture that combines with the sweet taste of fruit to create a superb harmony with Tongyeong’s seafood. Only 618 bottles of geonmak are produced per month, but you can drink as much of this limited edition traditional alcohol as you like at Yasojuban, the dining establishment run by Park’s wife Kim Eun-ha, along with a full-course meal consisting of seasonal ingredients and creative recipes.

물속으로 뛰어들고 싶은 이들은 섬으로 향한다. 통영 최남단 욕지도는 화려한 바닷속 환경을 자랑하는 섬. 섬 전문가 이재언은 저서 <한국의 섬: 통영시>에서 욕지도를 “삼천포, 남해, 통영 사람들은 모두 욕지바다 때문에 먹고 산다. 이 지역 고기잡이가 두루 욕지도 중심으로 이뤄지기 때문이다”라고 말한다.
욕지도 동항에 내리자마자 맨몸으로 바다를 유영하는 ‘프리다이빙’, 해녀의 물질을 맛보기로 경험하는 ‘해녀 체험’, 바닷속을 저벅저벅 산책하는 ‘씨-워킹’을 체험할 수 있는 청보리오토캠핑장으로 내달렸다. 물이 아직은 찬 초여름, 얼굴과 머리를 일절 적시지 않고도 물고기와 눈 맞춤을 할 수 있는 ‘씨-워커’가 되어보기로 했다.
수영복과 우주인이 쓸 법한 특수 헬멧으로 무장하고 심해 한가운데에 낸 바닷속 산책로로 걸어 내려갔다. 우르르 몰려다니며 헤엄치는 수백 마리의 돌돔 떼에 새우를 건네며 그 야무진 저작질을 구경하고 있으면 수중 산책을 안내하는 다이버가 어디선가 문어와 멍게, 해삼 같은 것을 찾아 손에 쥐여준다.
An Adventure on Yokjido
Those who want to jump into the water head to Yokjido Island. Located at the southernmost point of Tongyeong, the island boasts a splendid underwater environment. Visitors can try free-diving (swimming without any special equipment) and experience what it’s like to be a haenyeo (female free divers), or try their hand at “sea walking.”
I opted for sea walking so that I could gaze at fish without getting my face and hair wet. Wearing a wetsuit and special helmet that provided air from the surface, I began walking along a trail in the middle of the deep sea. A guide diver pointed out creatures such as octopi and sea pineapples, and so I spent my time observing the secret afternoons of marine life.

다도해의 섬과 통영 앞바다를 자유분방하게 즐기고 싶다면 요트 위에 오르자. 보송보송한 얼굴과 투명한 시야로 바다 생물들의 비밀스러운 오후를, 수면에 맺힌 햇살의 너울대는 무늬를 한참 동안 응시하는 기분을 어떤 단어로 묘사해야 할까? 가끔 머릿속이 시끄러울 때 ‘뇌를 꺼내 맑은 물에 씻어내고 싶다’는 생각을 하는데, 그걸 진짜 한다면 아마 이런 느낌이 아닐까? 물 밖으로 나와 욕지도 일주 도로를 한 바퀴 돌고도 좀처럼 여운이 가시지 않았다. 그날 오후, 통영을 떠나는 대신 마리나로 차를 틀었다. 요트 위에 올라 다시 섬으로 향하는 길. 순풍이 부드럽게 이끄는 대로 가다 보면 인적 없는 모래사장을 품은 무인도를 지나 한산도 근해의 안락한 품에 닿는다. 요트에서 할 수 있는 일은 무궁무진하다. “통영 사람만 아는 포인트에서 낚싯대를 드리울 수도 있고 스노클링 포인트를 찾아 바다로 뛰어들어도 좋죠.” 요트 선장이 건넨 달콤한 제안은 나중으로 기약하고 차가운 맥주 한 캔을 땄다. 물비늘이 반짝이는 해수면, 저 윤슬 사이로 이따금 출현하는 상괭이의 매끄러운 등이 나타나길 기대하며.
That afternoon, I drove to the marina instead of leaving Tongyeong. After boarding a yacht, I was on my way to another island. If you follow the gentle tailwind, you will pass by the uninhabited islands and their deserted beaches and find yourself in the warm embrace of Hansando Island. There are countless things to do on the yacht. “You can try casting your fishing rod at the special spot only locals know about, or finding a snorkeling spot to jump into the sea is also great,” the captain informed me. I decided to save his thoughtful suggestion for a later date, and downed a can of cold beer. I remained floating on the sea until the sun went down, waiting for the sparkling fin of a porpoise to appear between the ripples.

북한의 함흥 지방에서 만들어 먹던 농마국수와 회국수가 
진주냉면은 북한에서 “평양냉면과 더불어 최고의 냉면”이라고 인정할 만큼 뛰어난 맛을 자랑한다. 전 세계를 통틀어 차가운 국물에 말아 먹는 면 요리는 손에 꼽는다. 그중 냉면은 세상에서 가장 차가운 음식 중 하나다. 조선시대의 백과사전 격인 <재물보(才物譜)>를 비롯해 조리서, 시문집 등에 따르면 냉면은 조선시대부터 유행했다. 특히 궁중에서 사랑받았다. 냉면 애호가로 알려진 고종은 시원한 동치미 국물에 말아낸 냉면에 편육과 잣, 배를 고명으로 얹어 야식으로 즐겨 먹었다. 일제강점기에 들어 냉면은 외식 메뉴로 변모했다. 그중 평양냉면이 유명했다. 평양에서는 냉면의 원료인 메밀이 다량 생산됐고, 관공서가 많아 외식할 수 있는 계층도 많았다. 평양냉면은 평양에서 갈고닦은 노하우를 바탕으로 서울로 진출했다. 때문에 일제강점기 서울의 냉면집에서는 주로 평양냉면을 팔았다. 냉면의 큰 변화는 북한의 함흥 지방에서도 일어났다. 일제는 내륙에서 얻은 감자전분을 함흥 일대 항구로 옮겨와 운송했다. 자연스럽게 감자전분을 이용한 음식이 발달했다.
Across the world, there are only a handful of noodle dishes served in cold broth, and Korean naengmyeon is one of the coldest. Based on historical records, it seems that naengmyeon has been popular since the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and was especially sought-after in the royal court. King Gojong (1852-1919), a naengmyeon aficionado, preferred his noodles in dongchimi (radish kimchi) broth, garnished with pork, pine nuts and pear. During the Japanese occupation, many new government offices sprang up and naengmyeon became a common option for lunch. It became a staple dish for city dwellers — especially in Pyongyang. The northern city produced a great deal of buckwheat, the main ingredient for the noodles. Before long, Pyongyang naengmyeon also made its way down to Hanyang (present-day Seoul). Another major shift in naengmyeon also developed in North Korea’s city of Hamhung.
가늘고 질긴 면발에 육수를 붓고 양념장, 고명 등을 얹어 내는 농마(감자전분)국수와 육수가 없는 대신 인근에서 잡히던 가자미를 양념해 비빈 회국수가 탄생했다. 냉면이 결정적인 변곡점을 맞게 된 계기는 바로 분단이다. 함흥에서 강원도 속초로 온 피란민들은 고향의 음식을 잊지 못했다. 속초에 가게를 차린 이들은 식당 상호에 ‘함흥’이라는 지역명을 사용했고, 당시 남쪽에는 감자가 많지 않아 고구마전분으로 면을 뽑았다. 북한의 회국수와 농마국수가 속초의 함흥냉면으로 변모한 것. 시간이 지나며 지금의 함흥냉면을 대표하는 것은 명태, 가오리 등이 올라간 회국수가 됐다. 결국 함흥냉면은 함흥에는 없고 남한에만 있는 셈이다. 속초와 더불어 많은 실향민이 정착한 부산에선 또 다른 형태의 농마국수, 밀면이 탄생했다. 밀국수 냉면의 약칭인 밀면은 밀가루에 전분을 섞어 만든다. 전쟁통에 메밀가루를 구할 수 없자, 당시 미국에서 대량으로 원조받던 밀가루로 면을 만들어 먹기 시작했다. 밀면은 지금 부산을 대표하는 음식으로 자리 잡았다.
The Japanese had brought potato starch grown inland to ports around Hamhung to ship to Japan. Two main dishes using potato starch began to appear: nongma (starchy) noodles served in broth and topped with thick marinade, kimchi, meat and cucumber, and bibim noodles served without broth and topped with spicy seasoned flounder. The decisive turn in the development of the version of naengmyeon we are familiar with today came with the division of Korea. Refugees who fled south from Hamhung to Sokcho, Gangwon-do Province, were unable to forget the food of their hometown. Setting up a restaurant in the city, they named it Hamhung and used sweet potato starch to make the noodles because potatoes were hard to come by. In this way, nongma and bibim naengmyeon were transformed into Sokcho-style Hamhung naengmyeon.
냉면의 면은 주로 메밀가루(아래), 고구마전분(왼쪽 위) 
오늘날 냉면은 아픈 근대사를 딛고 더 멀리 뻗어나가고 있다. 그런가 하면 경남 진주는 자체적으로 냉면의 문화가 꽃핀 특별한 지역이다. 평양냉면이나 함흥냉면만큼 대중적이지 않아 진주에서만 맛볼 수 있다. 해물로 우려낸 육수에 메밀국수를 말아 올리는데 소고기 육전이 고명으로 올라가 더욱 화려하다. 서울은 한국에서 가장 다양한 냉면을 맛볼 수 있는 도시다. 식당에선 메밀가루, 감자전분, 고구마전분, 밀가루, 칡가루 등을 사용해 면을 뽑는다. 쇠고기·돼지고기·꿩고기 육수를 쓰거나 동치미 국물 등을 배합한다. 서울의 수많은 냉면 가게는 저마다의 비법으로 개성 있는 한 그릇을 내어놓는다. 레시피는 다르지만 일반적으로 냉면을 먹는 방법은 비슷하다. 차가운 음식인 만큼 먼저 삶은 달걀을 먹어 위벽을 보호하는 것이 좋다. 이후 기호에 따라 식초 등을 가미하거나, 면과 고명을 함께 먹으면 진미를 느낄 수 있다.
Eventually, noodles topped with seasoned pollock and stingray became the most common type of Hamhung naengmyeon. In the city of Busan, where the second-largest number of displaced refugees settled (after Sokcho), another form of nongma noodles was born: milmyeon — a type of naengmyeon made from wheat flour donated in large quantities by the United States. Today, milmyeon is considered one of Busan’s most iconic dishes. Naengmyeon culture has also blossomed in the city of Jinju, in South Gyeongsang-do Province. This regional variation made of buckwheat noodles in a seafood-based broth topped with beef yukjeon (meat pancake) was enjoyed by members of the upper class. Jinju naengmyeon also included ingredients like chestnuts, pear and kimchi. Of all the cities in Korea, Seoul is where you will find the widest variety of naengmyeon to try, each with its own secret recipe. While these recipes may vary, the general method of eating naengmyeon remains the same.
최근에는 과감한 시도를 하는 냉면집도 눈에 띈다. 서울 마포구 우주옥에선 샤르퀴트리를 올린 냉면을 선보였다. 은평구 서관면옥은 냉면과 편육, 빈대떡 등이 올라가는 ‘서관면상’을 하루 20명에게만 판매한다. 강남구의 경성면옥에서는 냉면 위에 산낙지를 통째로 넣어 보양식으로 즐길 수 있다. 인천 일미화평동냉면은 매년 여름, 수박 속을 판 뒤 냉면을 넣는 ‘수박냉면’을 판매한다. 냉면은 조선시대와 일제강점기를 거쳐 분단의 아픔까지 모두 담은 음식이다. 2018년 남북정상회담에서 두 지도자는 냉면을 먹으며 한민족의 의미를 공고히 했다. 냉면은 해외에서도 꽤 주목받고 있다. 찬 음식에 놀라는 외국인들도 이내 냉면의 감칠맛에 빠진다. 뉴욕이나 베를린의 힙한 식당에선 냉면 팝업을 열고, 동남아시아의 젊은이들은 SNS에 냉면 영상과 사진을 업로드한다. 500년을 훌쩍 뛰어넘어, 냉면은 새로운 시간을 맞이하고 있다.
Start by eating the boiled egg garnish to protect your stomach lining — in addition to being cold, the rough surface of the noodles (especially in the case of buckwheat noodles) can be hard on an empty stomach. Then, depending on your preference, you can add vinegar, mustard or cayenne pepper powder to taste, and add other garnishes. For Koreans, naengmyeon is a soul food. Following the 2018 summit between North and South Korea, where the two leaders ate naengmyeon to underscore all that is shared between the Korean people, the symbolic dish has become popular overseas. Hip restaurants in New York and Berlin host naengmyeon pop-ups during the summer, and young people across Southeast Asia have been posting videos of themselves eating naengmyeon on social media. Five centuries on from its storied origins, it seems safe to say that naengmyeon is entering a new era.
평양냉면 간을 하기 전 국물을 먼저 마신다. 식초는 면에, 겨자는 육수에 푼다. 메밀 면은 자르지 않는 것이 좋다. 냉면에 얹은 편육은 묵직한 끝맛을 위해 마지막에 먹는다.
Pyongyang naengmyeon Taste the broth before you season it. Sprinkle vinegar on the noodles and add mustard to the broth. Save the slices of boiled pork to enjoy at the end.
함흥냉면 먼저 비빔 양념장 맛을 살짝 본다. 기호에 맞게 식초, 겨자, 양념장을 넣는다. 삶은 달걀의 노른자를 잘게 빻아 풀어서 함께 섞는다. 면은 가위로 자르는 것을 추천.
Hamhung naengmyeon Drink a cup of hot broth before the naengmyeon is served. When mixing the ingredients, mash the yolk of the hard-boiled egg into a fine paste so it spreads evenly.
진주냉면 식초나 겨자를 바로 넣지 않고, 국물이나 양념 맛을 본다. 싱겁다고 느껴진다면 그때 넣는다. 육전을 따로 먹기도, 면과 함께 먹기도 한다. 면은 가위로 자르는 것을 추천.
Jinju naengmyeon Don’t add vinegar or mustard right away; taste the broth or seasoning first. Only add extras if it tastes bland. The yukjeon can be eaten with the noodles or separately.
밀면 자르지 않고 먹어야 부드러움과 쫄깃함을 느낄 수 있다. 겨자와 식초를 넣으면 더욱 맛있다. 비빔을 시켰다면 냉육수를 추가해 물과 비빔의 중간쯤으로 먹어본다.

시원한 물소리를 들으며 인왕산의 품으로 걸어 들어가고 싶다면, 첫 목적지는 수성동계곡으로 설정하자. ‘물소리가 들리는 계곡’이라는 뜻의 수성동계곡은 빼어난 경관으로 조선의 화가 겸재 정선을 비롯해 당대 최고의 문인과 화가들이 시를 짓고 그림을 그렸던 곳이다. 때문에 1971년 이곳에 지어진 아파트를 철거하고 계곡을 복원할 때 겸재의 <수성동> 속 풍경을 재건하는 데 주력했다. 구부러진 소나무나 돌다리 기린교가 바로 그림을 재현한 흔적. 인왕산이 깊지 않아 수량이 적어 평소에는 발목 깊이 정도의 실개천이지만, 비가 온 다음 날이면 콸콸 쏟아지는 폭포를 볼 수 있다.
If you want to walk into the embrace of Inwangsan Mountain and hear the refreshing sound of water, make Suseong-dong Valley your first destination. Because of its exceptional beauty, many famous Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) writers and artists depicted the valley in their work, including painter Jeong Seon (1676–1759), also known by the pen name Gyeomjae. When the apartments built here in 1971 were torn down and the valley was restored, the focus was on recreating the scenery seen in Gyeomjae’s painting Suseongdong such as the crooked pine trees and the Giringyo stone bridge.
수성동계곡 중간마다 교량이 있어 구경하기 편하고, 정자에서 쉬어 갈 수 있다. 인왕산 숲속쉼터는 숲과 도심을 파노라마로 즐기며 사색에 빠지는 비밀스러운 장소다. 인왕산을 얘기할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 사건인 1·21사태(북한의 무장 군인 31명이 청와대를 기습하기 위해 서울에 침투한 사건)가 일어난 1968년 이후 인왕산에는 여러 군사시설이 들어섰다. 이후 군사지역으로 일부 닫혀 있던 인왕산이 지난 2018년 전면 개방되며 초소 대부분이 철거됐는데, 서울시는 병사들의 거주 공간이었던 인왕3분초를 개조해 쉼터로 재단장했다.
A several minute detour off the main trail leads to Inwang Guard Post Forest Retreat, a secret spot with forest and city views. After the Blue House Raid of 1968, in which 31 North Korean commandos attacked the presidential office, various military facilities were built on Inwangsan Mountain. In 2018, one of these former checkpoints was renovated into a unique public shelter and rest area for hikers.

1시간 남짓 오르면 서울의 아름다운 경관을 눈에 담을 수 있는 산. 해발고도 338m에 불과하지만, 인왕산은 그야말로 발품 대비 최고의 경관을 자랑한다. 산세가 험준하지만, 산을 가르는 2km 정도의 성곽길이 걷기 좋고 길 대부분이 계단이라 편하게 등산할 수 있다. “인왕산 모르는 호랑이 없다”는 속담이 있을 정도로 인왕산에는 호랑이가 많았다는 전설이 있는데, 실제로 산의 전체적인 모양새가 호랑이를 닮기도 했다. 덕분에 인왕산 기슭에 숨겨진 호랑이 동상들을 찾는 것도 숨은 재미다.
After tackling the hour-long climb up Inwangsan Mountain, you can gaze out over Seoul. With a height of 338m, the mountain’s granite terrain looks rugged from afar, but the approximately 2km-long path along the fortress wall that passes over the mountain is pleasant for walking. This and many of the other mountain trails have stepped sections, making for relatively easy hiking. Legend has it that the peak used to be home to tigers.
커피와 함께 매일 굽는 수제 빵을 맛보거나 다양한 책을 읽을 수 있다. 허물어진 경찰 초소 외벽을 지나 철제 출입문 앞에서 책을 읽고 기름 탱크 옆에서 커피를 마실 수 있는 곳. 방호 목적으로 사용하던 경찰 초소가 전면 개방 이후 북 카페로 재탄생했다. 인왕산 초소책방은 인왕산 숲속쉼터와 비슷한 재건축의 역사를 가졌지만, 초입 도로에 있어 더욱 많은 사람이 찾는다. 전면이 통유리로 된 북 카페 2층의 전망 덱에선 인왕산의 아름다운 경치를 감상할 수 있는데, 날씨가 좋으면 전망이 남산 N서울타워까지 이어진다.
Nestled in a forest next to Inwangsan Mountain’s Jarak Trail is Chosochaekbang, a place where, after passing the collapsed outer walls of a police guard post, visitors can read a book and sip coffee beside an oil tank. Meaning “Guard Post Bookstore,” Chosochaekbang has a history similar to that of the Inwang Guard Post Forest Retreat. Here, people enjoy beautiful views of Inwangsan Mountain from the second floor observation deck, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls on all sides.

아름다운 건축과 더불어 한국인이 가장 사랑하는 시인 윤동주의 문학과 삶을 볼 수 있다. 문학관에는 요동치는 역사의 한가운데서 거침없이 휘둘린 시인의 고통과 그를 표현한 작품이 잘 전시돼 있다. 건물은 용도 폐기된 물탱크를 재건축해 지었는데, 때문에 시 <자화상>을 모티브로 한 제2전시실 ‘열린 우물’과 시인의 삶에 대한 영상물을 재생하는 제3전시실 ‘닫힌 우물’에는 탱크를 채운 물의 흔적이 여전히 남아 있다. 문학관 뒤로 이어진 시인의 언덕로에 오르면, 그가 시적 영감을 받았던 인왕산 길과 서울의 경치가 한눈에 담긴다.
Located near the northeastern edge of Inwangsan Mountain is an eye-catching building where people can learn about the life and works of Yun Dong-ju, a popular Korean poet. The museum exhibits works that reflect the hardships of Yun, who lived through a turbulent time. The building was constructed by repurposing water tanks, and traces of the water that filled them can still be found in Exhibition Hall 2 and Hall 3 where videos about Yun’s life are played.

개미마을 꼭대기와 이어진 등산 코스를 오르다 보면 인왕산 정상에 닿을 수 있다. 잘 알려지지 않은 인왕산을 알고 싶다면 홍제동 개미마을로 향해보자. 1960년대 이 인근은 대부분 가난한 판자촌이었는데, 주위에 거대한 신식 주택이 세워지고 갈 곳 없던 이들이 하나둘 모여들며 마을이 만들어졌다. ‘개미처럼 열심히 사는 사람들의 마을’이란 의미의 개미마을은 지난 2009년, 서울 시내 5개 대학의 미술학과 학생들이 마을 곳곳에 50여 개의 벽화를 그리며 새로운 명소로 재탄생했다. 영화 <7번방의 선물>, 예능 프로그램 <런닝맨>의 촬영지로도 잘 알려졌다. 천천히 감상하며 오르막을 오르다 보면 어느새 인왕산이 숨겨둔 새로운 얼굴을 마주하게 된다.
벽화는 환영, 가족, 자연, 인생, 끝과 시작 등의 주제로 그려졌다.To explore the lesser-known side of Inwangsan Mountain, head to Ant Village, in the Hongje-dong neighborhood. In the 1960s, this area was mostly a shantytown. Dubbed “Ant Village” because its residents lived as diligently as ants, the neighborhood was transformed in 2009 when art students from five universities in Seoul painted more than 50 murals there. It became even more renowned after appearing in scenes of the movie Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013) and the variety program Running Man (2010-). The murals of Ant Village are fading away but are still worth seeing.

버려졌던 방호 기지가 공공미술 전시 무대로 전환됐다. 1970년에 지은 우리나라 최초의 주상복합아파트 유진맨션은 건축 당시 북침에 대비해 지하에 100여 개의 콘크리트 기둥을 세웠다. 이후 50년이 지난 2020년, 분단국가의 현실을 대변한 100여 개의 기둥은 아이러니하게도 훌륭한 예술적 장치로 탈바꿈했다. 대낮에도 어둡고 선선한 약 250m 구간에는 국내 공공미술 최초 3D 홀로그램 작품, 시민 참여 작품 등 8개 예술 작품이 전시됐다. 그중 가장 눈에 띄는 작품은 단연 <온기>. 42개 기둥을 빛으로 연결해 사람들의 온기가 여전히 이어지길 바라는 의미를 담았다.
The architectural blueprints for Yujin Mansion, Korea’s first residential and commercial complex when erected in 1970, included an underground space with around 100 pillars to be used in the event of a North Korean invasion. In 2020, this space was transformed through a variety of art installations. In this dark, cool bunker, eight works of art are now on display, including a 3D hologram and works created through citizen participation. The most eye-catching piece is Ongi, which uses light to connect 42 pillars, and conveys a hopeful message about human warmth.
지난해 3.1절 임시정부 수립 103주년 만에 문을 연 국립대한민국임시정부기념관. 1919년 중국 상하이 임시정부 수립부터 1948년 대한민국 정부 수립까지, 치열한 독립운동을 펼쳐온 임시정부의 활동과 역사를 모은 곳이다. 관람객이 가장 좋아하는 공간은 <대한민국 임시정부와 사람들>전이 열리는 3층 상설전시 2관. ‘대한민국임시정부가 걸어온 길-돌아오기 위해 떠난 4000km’라는 주제로 임시정부의 피나는 노력을 몽환적이고 아름다운 영상으로 잘 표현한 미디어아트 작품을 전시 중이다. 1층 옥외광장에 전시된 <역사의 파도>도 놓치면 아쉬운 작품. 이곳에선 정면으로 보이는 인왕산의 당당한 기세를 온몸으로 느낄 수 있다.
The National Memorial of the Korean Provisional Government opened on March 1, 2022, 103 years after the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was established. It’s a space that chronicles Korea’s independence movements, starting with the founding of the government in Shanghai in 1919, and ending with the establishment of the Korean national government in 1948. In Exhibition Hall 2, visitors can experience the media art exhibit named The Path Walked by the Korean Provisional Government — a 4,000km Journey Home. Also not to be missed is The Waves of History exhibition, in the outdoor plaza on the first floor.

돌아보면 2016년은 K-팝 세계에서 하나의 큰 분기점이었다. 연작 앨범과 세계관 열풍이 무수한 K-팝 그룹의 성격을 바꾼 그 무렵, 조용한 혁명이 일어났다. 2010년대 중반 이후 등장한 K-팝 그룹 한쪽에선 거의 유일하게 가상의 세계관이 없는 팀, 블랙핑크가 2016년 8월에 데뷔한 것이다. 블랙핑크는 데뷔 초부터 지수, 제니, 로제, 리사 네 멤버의 개성과 매력 그리고 노래의 힘만으로 우직하게 밀어붙였다. 번트나 주루플레이로 가득한 리그에 풀스윙과 장타로 무장한 슬러거가 나타났다고 할까. 이 분홍빛 유니폼을 입은 베이브 루스는 단기간 내에 자신만의 ‘홈런 레이스’를 펼쳐냈다.
Looking back, 2016 was a major turning point in the world of K-pop. Differing from the trends of the time, BLACKPINK debuted in August 2016 as one of the very few groups with no particular worldview, and a quiet revolution took place. Since their early days, BLACKPINK have steadily moved forward by relying on the personality and charm of the four members — JISOO, JENNIE, ROSÉ and LISA — and the captivating power of their songs.
Using catchphrases like “BLACKPINK in your area” and “BLACKPINK is the revolution,” they immediately differentiated themselves. Just try listening to tracks such as DDU-DU DDU-DU, How You Like That or Shut Down. They feature beats and raps that are heavier and stronger than those of boy groups. And what about the statement made in the song Pretty Savage? The girls’ powerful rapping and singing are the only explanations needed for the line, “I am black, I am pink, I can change between both if I want.”

이 캐치프레이즈를 자신들의 노래 속에 심어둔 블랙핑크는 음악부터 남달랐다. ‘뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)’, ‘How You Like That’, ‘Shut Down’ 같은 곡을 들어보자. 이들은 보이 그룹의 음악보다 더 무겁고 센 비트와 랩, 독한 플렉스의 노랫말을 장착했다. ‘Pretty Savage’와 ‘뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)’에 등장하는 선언은 어떠한가. “예쁘장한 savage” 말이다. 이는 단순한 선언이나 플렉스가 아니다. “예쁘장한 savage”야말로 이 그룹이 가지고 있는 거의 모든 것 그리고 세계 팝계를 질주하게 된 거의 모든 이유를 말해주는 키워드다. 아름다운 외모에서 뿜어내는 힘찬 퍼포먼스, 랩, 가창은 “Black 했다 Pink 했다 내 맘대로 바꿈”이란 구절에 주석 달 필요를 없게 만든다.
그들의 ‘출생지’인 YG엔터테인먼트는 이 이례적 신드롬의 상당 부분을 설명한다. 블랙핑크에 앞서 빅뱅, 투애니원을 성공시킨 YG는 설립 초기부터 힙합을 정체성의 가운데에 뒀다. 1990년대 한국 대중음악계를 송두리째 바꾼 서태지와 아이들에서 랩과 춤을 담당했던 양현석은 YG를 세운 뒤 소속 가수들을 모아 ‘YG 패밀리’라는 힙합 컴필레이션 앨범을 내 큰 화제를 모았다. YG는 원타임, 지누션부터 페리, 마스타 우까지 다양한 힙합 음악가들을 회사의 연혁에 수놓았다. 특히 둔탁한 힙합 리듬에 자극적인 일렉트로닉 댄스뮤직의 비트를 결합하고 트렌디한 랩, 대중의 귀를 단번에 사로잡을 후렴구 멜로디까지 토핑하는, ‘YG 사운드(빅뱅과 투애니원을 통해 이미 검증한 음악 공식)’가 블랙핑크에 그대로 이식됐고, 2세대 프로듀서들의 합류와 그들의 집단 창작을 통해 2020년대의 것으로 업데이트됐다. 때로 메탈리카의 기타 리프마저 연상시키는 미니멀하면서 자극적인 루프들은 둔중한 저음 비트, 채찍처럼 내려치며 방울뱀처럼 꿈틀대는 트랩 스타일의 하이햇 사운드 등과 만나 블랙핑크의 청각적 입체 공간을 건축한다.
YG Entertainment, the company behind the group, has placed hip-hop at the center of its identity since the early days, having led groups like BIGBANG and 2NE1 to success before BLACKPINK was formed. The so-called “YG sound,” which combines stimulating electronic dance music with a hip-hop rhythm before topping it off with rap and a catchy chorus melody, proved to be a formula for success and was adopted for BLACKPINK. The tried-and-true equation was updated for the 2020s through collaborative writing among second-generation producers. The loops in their songs are exciting and even call to mind the guitar riffs of Metallica.
Then a cherry was added on top of this delicious cake — the unique sounds of the four members. LISA’s powerful rapping, the refreshing tones of JISOO and ROSÉ, and the lingering voice of JENNIE come together to form the distinct sound of BLACKPINK. Their tones blend with the golden vocals of pop artists such as Selena Gomez (on Ice Cream), Cardi B (on Bet You Wanna), Dua Lipa (on Kiss and Make Up) and Lady Gaga (on Sour Candy).
The scales, instrument samples and melodies with Eastern undertones are another unique characteristic of BLACKPINK’s music. The melodies in songs such as Crazy Over You, Pink Venom and Forever Young go beyond the foursome’s home countries of Korea and Thailand, expanding their scope.
이렇게 건축된 맛 좋은 케이크 위에 체리가 얹힌다. 바로 멤버 넷의 개성 넘치는 음색이다. 제니의 쫄깃한 목소리는 리사의 파워풀한 랩, 지수와 로제의 청량감 있는 음색과 함께 탄탄한 긴장감의 ‘블랙핑크 사각형’을 형성한다. 설리나 고메즈(‘Ice Cream’), 카디 비(‘Bet You Wanna’), 두아 리파(‘Kiss and Make Up’), 레이디 가가(‘Sour Candy’) 같은 세계 팝계의 황금 목소리들과 자연스레 섞이며 분리되는 블랙핑크의 색깔이 여기서 비롯된다. 레이디 가가는 필자와의 인터뷰에서 협업을 돌아보며 “블랙핑크의 제5 멤버가 돼 내가 영광이었다”고 털어놨다.
고유한 색채가 짙은 음계, 악기 샘플, 멜로디 역시 블랙핑크 음악의 독특한 차별적 요소다. ‘Crazy Over You’, ‘Pink Venom’, ‘Forever Young’ 같은 곡에 등장하는 이런 선율은 멤버들의 고국인 한국, 태국을 넘어 범아시아권으로 공감각적 상상력을 확장시킨다.
블랙핑크 사운드의 중심엔 EDM과 힙합이 있지만 포크와 록의 향취까지 흡수하는 다채로움이야말로 블랙핑크 음악 세계에 입체감을 더한다. 강렬한 전자음, 찰랑거리는 통기타나 맑은 톤의 전기기타 사운드. 이 상극처럼 보이는 소리들은 블랙핑크의 음악 안에서 종종 천연덕스럽게 교차하고 바통을 터치한다(‘휘파람’, ‘Hard to Love’ 같은 곡을 보라). 로제의 ‘Gone’은 그런 가장 뾰족한 꼭짓점이다. K-팝과 상관없는 전혀 다른 장르에서도 이들이 충분히 그들 자신으로서 존재할 수 있음을 잘 보여준다.
올해 초, 한국의 IPTV 채널을 돌리다 프랑스 TV5 특집방송을 보며 깜짝 놀랐다. 첼리스트 고티에 카퓌송, 바이올리니스트 다니엘 로사코비크의 클래식 무대는 파가니니의 ‘라 캄파넬라’로 이어졌고, 급기야 블랙핑크가 무대에 올라 ‘Shut Down’을 협연하면서 화려한 피날레로 치달았던 것이다. 그러고 보니 글로벌 차트와 전 세계의 틱톡 챌린지를 수놓았던 지수가 부른 ‘꽃(FLOWER)’도 의미심장하다. 여기에 삽입된 현악 피치카토 사운드나 한국적 가사와 선율을 보자. 그룹과 솔로를 아우르는 블랙핑크의 세계 안에 실로 다양한 스펙트럼이 자리함을 알 수 있다. 블랙핑크 사운드를 스피커라는 프리즘에 투과하면 그 분광(分光)의 양상은 블랙과 핑크 사이가 아닌 훨씬 더 다채로운 색채로 퍼져나간다.
블랙핑크는 올 4월 미국 캘리포니아주 인디오에서 열린 북미 최대 야외 대중음악 축제에서 그들 커리어의 큰 하이라이트를 만들었다. 코첼라밸리뮤직앤드아츠페스티벌(이하 ‘코첼라’)에 역사상 최초의 아시아인 헤드라이너로 출연한 것이다. 2018년 비욘세가 코첼라 헤드라이너로 역사를 쓴지 불과 5년 만에 북미 콘서트 시장은 블랙핑크를 전기로 완전히 새로운 기록을 또 하나 새기게 됐다. ‘베이첼라(Beychella, 비욘세의 코첼라)’에 이어 ‘핑크첼라(Pinkchella, 블랙핑크의 코첼라)’가 코첼라를 설명하는 독특한 ‘연관 검색어’로 또렷이 자리매김했다.
While hip-hop and electronic dance music lie at the center of the group’s sound, it’s the elements of folk and even rock music that round out BLACKPINK’s sound. ROSÉ’s solo song Gone stands at the apex (also be sure to check out the songs WHISTLE and Hard to Love). BLACKPINK have shown without any doubt that they can thrive as themselves, even in completely different genres that have nothing to do with K-pop.
Earlier this year, I happened to be watching a classical music performance featuring cellist Gautier Capuçon and violinist Daniel Lozakovich. The violinist was moving into Paganini’s La Campanella when BLACKPINK suddenly appeared on stage and launched into a joint performance of Shut Down, bringing the show to a magnificent finale. It’s also meaningful that JISOO’s solo song FLOWER has seen success both on the global charts and in TikTok challenges.
In April this year, BLACKPINK achieved their career highlight by performing at the largest outdoor musical festival in North America. BLACKPINK was the first Asian act to headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It was just five years after Beyoncé made history headlining Coachella or “Beychella.”
블랙핑크는 지난해와 올해 연인원 약 150만 명 이상을 동원하는 K-팝 걸그룹 역사상 최대 규모의 월드 투어를 진행 중이다. 7월에는 영국 런던에서 열리는 브리티시 서머타임 하이드파크 페스티벌에 출연한다. 건즈 앤 로지스, 브루스 스프링스틴, 빌리 조엘, 라나 델 레이 등 영국과 미국의 굵직한 아티스트들이 유서 깊은 하이드파크의 특설 무대에 연일 오르는 특급 이벤트다.
세계가 블랙과 핑크 그리고 설명하기 힘든 무수한 색으로 물든다. 물론 그 광활한 무지개를 온전히 완성하는 일은 전 세계 다양한 인종과 젠더가 수놓을 객석의 몫이다. 앞서 말했듯 블랙핑크는 가상의 세계관이 없는 그룹이다. ‘없는’의 앞에 ‘필요’를 둬도 되겠다. 세계관이 ‘필요 없는’ 블랙핑크는 현실 세계에서 영토를 넓혀가며 지구상에 자신만의 세계관을 구축해나가고 있다. 직접 두 발로 그 단단한 땅을 돌면서, 블랙 또는 핑크의 지도를 그려나가고 있다.
The group is currently in the middle of one of the largest world tours in history by a K-pop girl group. Over the course of the tour, they will end up performing in front of a total of about 1.5 million fans. In July, the group will play at the BST Hyde Park festival in London for the first time. The world is being painted black, pink and countless other colors that are difficult to describe. Of course, it’s the fans of various races, genders and nationalities who will put the finishing touches on this expansive rainbow.
As mentioned earlier, BLACKPINK is a group with no specific virtual worldview. It doesn’t seem like they need one. The four-member group is expanding their territory in the arena of pop culture and forging their own path in the process. As they crisscross the globe, they are drawing their very own map in black and pink.
Design
조개는 생명을 다한 뒤 ‘자개’로 변모한다. 바다를 터전 삼아서인지 어떨 때는 일렁이는 바다 같고 어떨 때는 수면에 부서지는 영롱한 빛 같기도 하다. 류지안의 작품 역시 요동치는 생명력을 지니고 있다. 바다와 파도의 흐름을 시각화한 오브제 ‘Beyond the Ocean’ 시리즈와 그로부터 확장된 밤바다를 비추는 달을 닮은 달항아리 형태의 작품까지. 하얗고 푸른 빛의 자개로 빚은 작품에선 화려함과 동시에 잔잔히 흐르는 물결 같은 은은함이 엿보인다.
From the inner shell lining of oysters and abalone comes mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre. Thanks, perhaps, to their ocean origins, at times these fragments can come together to resemble the roiling waves themselves; at others, they appear more like the shimmering light refracted off the water’s surface. In much the same way, the works of artist Jian Yoo also possess a fluctuating life force. From her Beyond the Ocean series of objects that express the flow of the ocean and its waves, to the moon jars that resemble lunar light glinting across the vast expanse of the ocean, the flow of the lines created by the white and blue mother-of-pearl is both captivating and delicate, like a gently flowing stream.
류지안은 자개를 전형성에서 벗어나 자신만의 방법으로 시각화한다. 흙으로 빚은 도자기 대신 자동차나 요트를 만드는 산업 소재로 원형을 빚고 표면에 자개를 올려 달항아리를 완성한다. 어디에서도 본 적 없는 달항아리에는 전통공예의 소재나 기법으로 인식되던 자개를 현대미술로 끌어들이고 대비되는 것들을 하나로 공존시키고자 하는 그의 주제 의식이 담겨 있다.
“뉴욕에서 디자인을 공부할 때 나의 경쟁력은 무엇인가를 오랫동안 고민했어요. 그 과정에서 자개가 떠올랐습니다. 나전칠기 작가인 아버지의 공방에서 장난감만큼 친숙하게 보고 자랐거든요. 그 자개가 한국에서는 거의 전통공예 소재로 소비되는 반면 해외에서는 하이엔드 주얼리나 시계 등에 들어가는 보석류로 쓰이고 있었어요. 새로운 시각으로 바라본 자개를 나만의 방식으로 표현해보고 싶다는 결심이 서 자개 기법을 현대미술로 풀어나가기 시작한 거죠.”
첨단 과학기술과 미술이 융합된 새로운 장르의 예술이 나타나는 시대에 그는 반대로 사람의 손과 디자인, 미술이 융합한 ‘류지안’이라는 장르를 만들어왔다. 회화와 오브제 사이를 자유로이 넘나드는 다양한 작품 세계만큼 활동 반경 또한 폭넓다. BTS의 공식 화보 <달마중>의 배경으로 쓰였고 롤스로이스, 카르티에, 블랑팡 등 전통을 지닌 브랜드와 협업을 펼쳤다. 팬텀 차량의 대시보드에 자개를 전통 방식으로 세공한 후 도장한 ‘Inspiring Greatness’ 프로젝트는 롤스로이스가 한국 아티스트와 함께하는 첫 작업이었고 호평을 얻어 국내 전시로도 이어졌다. 얼마 전 조 바이든 미국 대통령에게 국빈 선물로 전달되며 화제를 모았지만 사실 10년 전부터 국빈들에게 작품을 선사해오기도 했다.
Unbound by convention, Yoo presents mother-of-pearl — a product of nature — in a unique manner. Instead of using earthenware pottery to create each of her moon jars, she deploys modern industrial materials typically used for automobiles and yachts to form a sphere and then affixes mother-of-pearl on the jar’s surface. These utterly unique moon jars reflect the artist’s chosen theme of bringing two contrasting things together to coexist, bringing the traditional techniques of mother-of-pearl craft into the world of contemporary art.
“When I was studying design in New York, I spent a lot of time thinking about what could set me apart from all these other people from around the world,” says Yoo. “The idea of using mother-of-pearl came to me during that process. My father was a mother-of-pearl inlay lacquerware artist, so I grew up seeing it in his workshop — it was as familiar as my toys. And while mother-of-pearl is used almost solely in Korea for traditional crafts, overseas it’s used like a gemstone, in high-end jewelry and watches. I decided that I wanted to try using mother-of-pearl in my own way, so I started translating traditional Korean craft techniques into contemporary art.”
In an era characterized by the emergence of art genres that combine visual elements with cutting-edge science and tech, Yoo has chosen to take the opposite path, creating a genre that incorporates design, art and a human touch — a genre we might call “Jian Yoo.”
“조 바이든 대통령에게는 지난 2021년 한미정상회담 때에도 그림 작품을 전달했어요. 이번에는 한미동맹 70주년이자 12년 만의 국빈 방문인 만큼 선물의 의미가 중요했고 한국을 대표하는 아름다움 중 하나인 달항아리 <THE MOON-WHITE 48>가 최종 선정됐죠. 엘리자베스 여왕에게도 두 차례 선물로 전해졌고, 지난해 방한한 슈타인마이어 독일 대통령을 위해 자개로 만든 축구공을 준비하기도 했습니다.”
‘아름답다’의 우리말인 ‘아리’와 그의 이름이자 ‘빛을 새기다’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘지안’을 더한 스튜디오 ‘아리지안’이 어느새 10년을 맞았다. 류지안은 저만의 방식으로 벼려낸 시선과 영감을 각 분야의 장인과 함께 시대를 아우르는 아름다운 자개 작품으로 일궈왔다. 이 개척의 길은 앞으로 또 어떻게 빛날까?
“내년 상반기까지 서울과 뉴욕 등에서 개인전과 그룹전이 계획되어 있습니다. 개인적으로는 사진, 영상 등 다양한 분야의 아티스트와도 함께 작업해보고 싶고, 스케일 큰 설치미술도 해보고 싶어요. 자개로 다양한 작업을 하는 작가가 있다는 걸 세계에 더 많이 알리고 싶고요. ‘옛것의 뿌리를 계속 키워가는 동시에 현시대와 새롭게 엮일 수 있을지 고민하는 것 또한 창조의 일환이다’라는 첫 마음과 철학을 지켜가면서요.”
Yoo’s sphere of activity and influence is as wide-ranging as her diverse body of work. Her art was used as the backdrop of the official photoshoot for BTS’ DALMAJUNG merchandise collection, and she has collaborated with international heritage luxury brands such as Rolls-Royce, Cartier and Blancpain. Rolls-Royce’s Inspiring Greatness project, in which mother-of-pearl was inlaid into the dashboard of a Phantom car, was the company’s first-ever collaboration with a Korean artist — and it was so well received that it led to an exhibition in Korea. Recently, Yoo made headlines when one of her pieces was presented to U.S. President Joe Biden as a state gift. But the truth is, Yoo’s works of art have been presented to heads of state for more than a decade.
“We presented a painting to President Joe Biden during the 2021 U.S.-ROK summit,” explains Yoo. “But the gravity of this year’s occasion, which was both the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-ROK alliance and a Korean president’s first state visit to the United States in 12 years, made the meaning of the gift that much more significant. So, I recommended a few specific works, and the final choice was THE MOON_WHITE 48 — a moon jar, which is considered one of the most representative forms of Korean beauty. My pieces have also been gifted to the late Queen Elizabeth II, twice, and to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who visited Korea last year. President Steinmeier loves soccer, so I created a soccer ball made of mother-of-pearl.”
Yoo’s Studio Arijian, a combination of ari, the Korean word for “beautiful” and the name Jian, which means “to engrave light,” has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. How will Yoo’s pioneering light continue to shine into the future? “I have solo and group exhibitions planned for the first half of next year in Seoul and New York,” she says. “I also want to stay in touch with my original intention as an artist, which has always been about connecting with the old and breathing new inspiration into it, and also thinking about how to continue to strengthen those original roots while also making new connections with the current era, all as part of the creative process.”

2011년 영화 <파수꾼>과 <고지전>으로 주목받기 시작한 배우 이제훈은 범상치 않은 인물을 밀도 높게 소화하며 ‘괴물 신인’의 등장을 알렸다. 그가 연기한 <파수꾼>의 기태와 <고지전>의 일영은 모두 복잡한 상황 속에서 무너져내리는 나약한 인간의 단면을 적나라하게 전달한다. 친구들 사이에서 군림하며 폭력을 서슴지 않는 고등학교 일진 기태는 대한민국에서 10대를 보낸 관객들로부터 생생하다는 찬사를 받았다. 살기 위해서 아군에게 총을 겨누고 죄책감으로 망가져버린 일영은 한국전쟁의 비극을 절절하게 반영한 인물이다. 순수함과 미숙함이 어우러진 청춘의 생기를 온전히 전달하는 이제훈의 연기는 1990년대 배경의 첫사랑 영화 <건축학개론>을 통해 더 많은 관객의 마음을 사로잡았다. 그의 영역이 영화를 넘어 <패션왕>, <시그널>, <내일 그대와> 등 드라마로 확장되면서 그는 아시아 전역에서 사랑받는 스타로 부상했다. 군복무를 마치고 이제훈은 독창적인 세계관과 아이디어를 기반으로 한 작품으로 무대를 옮겨갔다.
Lee Je-hoon’s performances in the films Bleak Night (2011) and The Front Line (2011), earned praise for his consummate handling of tricky characters. Both Ki-tae in Bleak Night and Il-young in The Front Line are fragile characters who crumble before complexity.
Lee’s acting, which conveys a youthful vitality, captured the hearts of even more moviegoers with Architecture 101 (2012), a film about first love that was set in the 1990s.
Upon finishing his military service in 2014, Lee began taking on roles in uniquely scripted films. An example of his career shift is Phantom Detective (2016), in which he plays Hong Gil-dong, a detective tracking his mother’s killer. The next step in Lee’s career was playing bold young heroes capable of handling anything. An example is Park Hae-young from the drama Signal (2016), which set an audience record. Park is a criminal profiler who feels estranged despite his elite background, solving cold cases with a walkie-talkie to the past.
<탐정 홍길동: 사라진 마을>은 이런 변신을 확연하게 보여준 작품이다. 중절모와 레인코트를 갖춰 입은 탐정이 환상을 덧댄 한국의 시골 마을에서 액션과 코미디를 오가며 종횡무진한다. 다부진 캐릭터는 시청률 기록을 세웠던 TV 드라마 <시그널>의 박해영 형사로 이어진다. 엘리트 코스를 밟고 뛰어난 프로파일러가 됐지만 세상을 적대시하는 박 형사는 과거에서 송신한 무전을 활용해 현재의 미제 사건을 해결해나가는 이야기의 주인공이 된다. 시간 여행은 시공을 초월한 로맨틱드라마 <내일 그대와>에서도 반복된다. 한편 이제훈은 역사에 대한 참신한 시각이 담긴 영화에도 참여한다. <박열>에서 그는 일제강점기에 실존했던 아나키스트 독립운동가 박열을 스크린에 부활시킨다. <아이 캔 스피크>에서는 위안부 희생자 할머니의 미국 의회 증언을 위해 영어를 가르쳐주는 고지식한 공무원으로 등장해 웃음과 감동을 동시에 안긴다. 역사적 영웅과 소시민을 간극 없이 넘나드는 이제훈의 특별한 능력은 더 다양한 장르 도전으로 이어진다. 영화 <도굴>에서 능청스러운 도굴꾼으로 한국 전역을 돌며 입담을 발휘하고 <무브 투 헤븐: 나는 유품정리사입니다>에서는 조카와 함께 망자의 유품을 정리하며 성장하는 불법 격투기 선수로 변신한다. 전 국민이 열광한 TV 드라마 <모범택시>는 다양한 작품으로 쌓아온 그의 역량이 배트맨 같은 다크 슈퍼히어로 김도기 기사로 폭발하는 작품이다. 살해당한 어머니의 복수를 위해 복수 전문 모범택시 팀에 합류한 그는 법의 보호를 받지 못하는 피해자를 위해 복수전을 설계하고 실행하며 시청자에게 매주 정의의 사이다를 배달했다.
데뷔 때부터 지금까지 이제훈은 도덕과 정의 사이에서 여러 감정의 스펙트럼을 오가는 인물을 연기해왔다. 그가 맡은 인물은 늘 누군가를 아끼는 따뜻한 마음이 기저에 자리 잡고 있었다. 매번 자신의 모습을 다 보여주는 듯하지만, 새로운 작품에서 전과 다른 모습을 선보이는 배우. 우리는 아직 이제훈의 도착지를 모른다.
Meanwhile, in the rom-com Tomorrow with You (2017), the character So-joon, who can travel through time on the subway, tries to alter the past to protect the love of his life. While Lee was pushing the envelope in sci-fi TV shows, he also appeared in atypical historical films. In Anarchist from Colony (2017), he brings to life Park Yeol, a freedom fighter and anarchist during the Japanese colonial period. And in I Can Speak (2017), he plays an uptight civil servant teaching English to a former comfort woman as she prepares to testify before the U.S. Congress.
Lee’s knack for bouncing between historical heroes and petty bureaucrats with apparent ease and adapting to any period brought him opportunities in other genres. In Collectors (2020), he plays a wily gambler who relies upon his silver tongue as he roams the country. In Move to Heaven (2021), he becomes a boxer who enters illegal fights.
The capabilities that Lee cultivated in all these works culminate in his role as vigilante Kim Do-gi in the wildly popular drama Taxi Driver (2021-). Hoping to avenge his murdered mother, Kim joins a team of taxi drivers who specialize in revenge. Since his debut, Lee has portrayed a wide spectrum of characters who grapple with morality and justice; the kind of actor who always has something new up his sleeve. Even when we’re sure we’ve seen it all, there’s no telling how far he can go.
롤플레잉 게임의 원조 ‘던전 앤 드래곤’은 다수에게 익숙한 이름이다. 각기 다른 재능을 가진 모험가들이 힘을 합쳐 괴물, 악당을 물리치고 고초 끝에 원하는 바(보물, 경험치 등)를 얻는 내러티브로 유명한 이 게임은 영화인들에게 ‘언젠가 작품으로 만들어보고 싶은 소재’로 인기를 끌었다. <던전 앤 드래곤: 도적들의 명예>의 공동 감독인 존 프랜시스 데일리도 그중 한 명이다.
이 영화의 매력은 원작 게임을 전혀 접한 적이 없는 이들도 충분히 즐길 수 있는 친숙한 줄거리에 있다. 주인공 에드긴(크리스 파인)이 오래전에 헤어진 딸을 찾기 위해 홀가(미셸 로드리게스), 젱크(레지 장 페이지), 사이먼(저스티스 스미스), 도릭(소피아 릴리스)과 함께 팀을 꾸린 후 악의 무리를 소탕하는 단순명료한 서사는 ‘세계관’, ‘판타지’ 같은 장치들이 어색한 관객도 영화에 손쉽게 몰입할 수 있도록 이끈다. 촬영지인 북아일랜드 벨파스트 지역의 장엄하고 이국적인 자연 풍광은 그 자체로 시각적인 즐거움을 선사한다. 특출난 능력은 있지만 어딘가 허술하거나 흠 있는 캐릭터들이 퀘스트를 깨기 위해 협력하고 고군분투하는 과정에서 만들어지는 ‘웃기는’ 에피소드와 좌충우돌은 관객에게 예상치 못한 재미와 웃음을 선사한다.
Even for those who don’t know much about tabletop games, the name Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) will likely have a familiar ring to it. First published in 1974, D&D set up the rules for one storyteller, or Dungeon Master, to lead a group of players through a fantasy adventure. As the game unfolds, the players gain different skills and join forces to defeat monsters and villains, ultimately earning rewards like treasure, weapons, magical items and experience. As such, D&D’s movie potential has caught the attention of various directors and screenwriters over the years. Co-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein took up the challenge of adapting the game into Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023).
The appeal of this movie is its simple plot, which is enjoyable even for those who have never encountered the original game. The straightforward yet immersive story arc involves the protagonist Edgin (Chris Pine), who teams up with Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), Simon (Justice Smith) and Doric (Sophia Lillis) to root out enemy forces and find his long-lost daughter. A compelling aspect is the movie’s medieval settings, which evoke a different world and bygone era. Filmed mainly in Northern Ireland, the majestic and exotic natural scenery provides a high level of visual enjoyment. The comical episodes and host of characters who have remarkable abilities, yet are flawed and struggling to complete their quests, provide the audience with unexpected moments of laughter and fun.

On October 26, 1909, An Jung-geun, a commander of Korea’s civilian militia known as the Righteous Army, shot the Japanese politician Itō Hirobumi, the architect of the invasion of Korea. The story of An Jung-geun unfolds in the musical drama Hero directed by Yoon Je-kyoon, which is based on a 2009 stage musical of the same name. The lead actors Jung Sung-hwa, Na Moon-hee and Kim Go-eun leave a deep impression through their captivating performances and heartrending songs.

Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the screenplay for the film Sicario (2015) and wrote and directed the movie Wind River (2017), called the shots from the director’s chair, while Terence Winter of the American drama The Sopranos (1999-2007), served as the writer. They’ve achieved astonishing growth without any support from large agencies or special promotions. Behind the rise of FIFTY FIFTY is the power of the single that went viral on TikTok. Cupid was repeatedly used as background music, appearing in around 700,000 videos, and this even led to the viral #CupidChallenge. The group’s simple melodies, clean vocals and globally appealing vibe have all contributed to creating demand in the international market before drawing a response in Korea. They have done more than enough to establish themselves as a formidable rookie group.

대한항공이 6월 1일부터 보잉 737-8 항공기가 운항하는 국제선 노선을 선두로 기내 와이파이 서비스를 본격 시작했다. 기내 와이파이 서비스가 가능한 보잉 737-8 기종은 김포~오사카, 인천~후쿠오카, 인천~오사카 등 단거리 노선에 우선 투입되었으며, 이후 순차적으로 확대해 국제선 전 노선에서 서비스를 제공할 계획이다.
대한항공은 고객이 필요에 따라 기내 와이파이 서비스를 선택할 수 있도록 요금제를 ‘인터넷’과 ‘메시징’으로 구성하고, 운항 거리와 서비스 이용 시간에 따라 이를 세분화했다. 인터넷 요금제 구매 시 웹 서핑과 이메일, 음악, 480p 이내의 비디오를 스트리밍할 수 있으며, 메시징 요금제로는 채팅 앱(카카오톡, 라인, 왓츠앱 등)을 통한 텍스트 메시지만 이용 가능하다. 기내 와이파이 서비스는 QR코드 스캔 혹은 웹페이지(wifi.koreanair.com) 접속 후 원하는 서비스를 선택하고 결제하면 이용할 수 있다.
한편, 대한항공은 서비스 개시를 기념해 8월까지 서비스 제공 항공기에 탑승한 승객을 대상으로 메시징 서비스를 무료로 제공한다.

Korean Air started offering in-flight Wi-Fi service from June 1. The rollout started with international routes serviced by Boeing 737-8 aircraft, with the in-flight Wi-Fi service deployed first on short-haul routes such as Gimpo-Osaka, Incheon-Fukuoka and Incheon-Osaka. The service will be gradually expanded until it is provided on all international routes.
Korean Air will offer two different Wi-Fi options — Internet and Messaging — so that passengers can choose the in-flight service that best suits their needs. These categories will be subdivided further, based on flight distance and service usage time. The Internet plan will allow for web access, emailing and streaming music, as well as watching videos of up to 480p, while the Messaging plan will only include text messages via chat apps (e.g. KakaoTalk, Line, WhatsApp, etc.). Both services will be accessible by scanning a QR code or visiting a webpage (wifi.koreanair.com), selecting the desired service and making a simple payment. To celebrate the launch, Korean Air is offering a free Messaging service through the end of August to all passengers boarding select aircraft.

Korean Air has been named a “5-Star Airline” for the second year in a row by Skytrax, the world’s premier airline consulting and rating company. This designation was earned in recognition of Korean Air’s efforts to upgrade its in-flight food, wine selection and AVOD (Audio and Video On Demand) content, featuring more than 300 movies and the latest K-content. Ongoing improvements to customer service and the modernization of the airline’s fleet also contributed to the recognition. Since March of last year, Korean Air passengers had access to a newly developed Korean-style vegan menu, and 52 new wines chosen by renowned sommelier Marc Almert were introduced. Recently, Korean Air also introduced a pre-order meal service for Prestige Class passengers on international flights departing from Korea. The company is also the first Korean airline to introduce Prestige seats on its A321neo aircraft, with their 180-degree lie-flat feature providing extra comfort. Korean Air will continue to identify customer needs in order to elevate the quality of our service and strive to maximize customer value based on a field-centric management approach.

대한항공이 지난 4월 29일과 30일, 서울 강서구 공항동 본사에서 ‘패밀리데이’ 행사를 개최했다. 코로나19 팬데믹 위기를 함께 극복한 임직원과 임직원 가족을 초청한 이번 행사에는 8600여 명이 참여해 더욱 의미 있는 시간을 보냈다. 테마파크로 꾸며진 대한항공 본사 격납고는 어린이용 놀이 기구와 포토 부스, 페이스페인팅, 푸드 트럭 등 대형 놀이공간과 즐길 거리로 가득 채워졌다. 또 어린이 안전교육 및 기내 응급처치 체험 이벤트, 대한항공 점보스 배구단의 사인회도 열렸다. 특히 대한항공 임직원 2만 318명의 이름으로 ‘Our Pride, We are Korean Air’ 슬로건을 새긴 래핑 항공기가 공개돼 감동을 안겼다. 내부까지 공개된 래핑 항공기는 많은 참석자의 발길을 끌었다. 임직원의 자부심이 담긴 보잉 777-300ER 항공기는 향후 전 세계 하늘길을 누빌 예정이다.
From April 29-30, Korean Air’s Family Day celebrations were held at the company’s headquarters in Seoul’s Gangseo-gu District. Resuming after a four-year hiatus, the event was held to promote unity and express gratitude to employees and their families for working so hard to overcome the coronavirus pandemic. As such, this year’s event was especially meaningful and ultimately attracted more than 8,600 participants. The hangar was transformed into a fairground, with large play areas and activities for families, including children’s rides, photo booths, face painting and food trucks. The event also featured child safety education opportunities, as well as autograph sessions with the Korean Air Jumbos volleyball team. One of the highlights of the event was the unveiling of an aircraft emblazoned with the slogan, “Our Pride, We are Korean Air” alongside the names of 20,318 Korean Air employees.
대한항공은 전 직원을 대상으로 ‘아이디어#’이라는 제안 게시판을 운영하고 있다. 창의적인 아이디어를 제안한 직원에게는 분기별 표창과 상금, 상품권, 프레스티지석 항공권 등을 제공한다. 직원에 대한 ‘존중’의 표시로써 현장 직원의 이야기에 귀 기울이며, 아이디어를 함께 고민하고, 함께 실현하는 분위기 속에서 회사와 전 직원이 소통할 수 있는 문화와 더 나은 고객 서비스를 위한 대한항공의 노력은 계속 이어질 예정이다.
대한항공이 노동조합 창립 59주년을 기념한 ‘노사 한마음 걷기’ 행사를 열고 화합과 결속을 재차 다졌다. 지난 5월, ‘다시 날자, 다시 걷자’는 슬로건으로 열린 행사에는 대한항공 유종석 부사장, 오필조 노동조합위원장을 비롯한 2500여 명의 직원과 가족이 참여해 부천 진달래동산을 함께 걸었다. 직원 가족은 걷기 외에도 에어바운스, 페이스페인팅, 풍선아트 등 어린이 체험 프로그램과 버스킹 공연, 경품 추첨 이벤트 등을 즐겼다.
IDEA# is the Korean Air employee message board created for open discussion and suggestions where everyone can freely propose ideas. Those who submit creative ideas are rewarded quarterly with cash prizes and prestige airline seats. As a display of respect for employees, Korean Air will take greater strides to give ear to employee needs, brainstorm ideas together and foster a culture of communication. Such efforts will continue in order to offer passengers better customer service.
Korean Air celebrated the 59th anniversary of its labor union with a Unified Labor-Management Walk, reaffirming a company-wide commitment to unity and solidarity. In May, more than 2,500 employees and their families — including Korean Air Vice President Yoo Jong-seok and Labor Union Chairman Oh Pil-jo — walked through Bucheon’s Azalea Hill under the slogan “RE:FLY, RE:WALK.” In addition to the walk, employees and their families enjoyed live music and prize drawings as well as special children’s programs including bouncy houses, face painting and balloon art. At the event, Vice President Yoo Jong-seok thanked employees for their dedication and hard work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
