October in London is the fine art season. From October 11-15, Frieze events in London’s Regent’s Park will showcase a variety of artwork. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Frieze London will present Artist-to-Artist, a special program featuring eight artists who have pushed the boundaries of contemporary art. Running concurrently, the Frieze Masters showcase will include artwork spanning six millennia, from rare antiques to paintings by old masters and modern masterpieces. Visitors can also enjoy Frieze Sculpture, a free public art exhibit, and various cultural events during Frieze Week.

This year’s Helsinki Design Week is taking place from September 8-17 under the theme, Once upon a time. The festival is switching to a triennial theme cycle that will culminate on its 20th anniversary in 2025. Merikortteli, the festival’s main venue located in a 19th-century shipyard in Punavuori, central Helsinki, will feature exhibitions on the changing nature of work and living spaces. Opening day will also see the announcement of the winners of the highly anticipated Helsinki Design Award.

The 19th Asian Games, originally scheduled for 2022 but postponed due to the pandemic, are finally slated to be held in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8. The Games will feature 40 events, some traditionally Western, such as the triathlon, and some Asian, like xiangqi (Chinese chess). A number of top Korean athletes are expected to participate including soccer player Lee Kang-in and high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok, who won the gold medal at this year’s Asian Athletics Championships.

Since 2020, French luxury jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels has supported the work of numerous contemporary choreographers through a festival called Dance Reflections, which has taken place around the world. This year, the festival will be held in New York City for the first time, kicking off on October 19 with Lucinda Childs’ Dance, to be performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet. The festival will present over two weeks of new works, including Room With A View, the first collaboration between the Ballet national de Marseille and (LA)HORDE, as well as Corps extrêmes, a collaboration between athletes, acrobats and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Burnt out from work and a stressful relationship, Vivienne Tang, 45, knew she needed to do something to battle her chronic insomnia. She runs an online publication named Destination Deluxe, which focuses on wellness and luxury travel, but was ironically in need of a wellness break herself. She spent a week at Kamalaya’s wellness and sleep enhancement retreat, in Koh Samui, Thailand. The retreat features a wide range of treatments that include meditation and massages.

The treatments you receive are relaxation-inducing too.” At the retreat, she received the Traditional Asian Hand Massage, which left her feeling deeply rested. “It’s really important that sleep issues are being addressed on all levels, not just physically,” she says.

3 Sacred Bread Served at every meal, golden rounds of non (bread) are widely revered here: bakers even purify themselves and say a prayer before bread-making begins. Uzbek loaves are decorated with various patterns made with traditional chekich bread stamps. The resulting holes release steam, keeping the center crisp and allowing the rest of the loaf to remain chewy and soft.

6 시간을 건너온 비단, 페르가나분지 9세기부터 핸드메이드 실크로 유명했던 동부 마르길란의 페르가나분지는 1200여 년이 지난 지금까지도 우즈베키스탄 실크 산업의 본진이다. 전통 방식을 고집하는 요드고릭 실크 공장에선 아직도 누에고치를 물에 삶아 실을 뽑는다. 골드실크수공예센터에서는 우즈베키스탄의 전통 물레를 사용해 실크를 분리한 뒤 윤기 넘치는 실크를 짜고 그림 그리는 모습까지 볼 수 있다.

Highlights include the Alisher Navoiy station, named after the founding father of Uzbek literature, where turquoise ceramic murals portray scenes from his most famous poems.
5 Historic Hammam The atmospheric Bozori Kord is a men-only bathhouse thought to date back to at least the 16th century. Customers who brave the one-hour, “no pain, no gain” massages here first take a steam bath before being soaped, scrubbed, pounded and stretched on a pink-marble slab. The treatment’s final steps are a tinglingly hot ginger and honey back scrub and a cold-water rinse, followed by a reviving cup of green tea made with spices.
6 Fergana Valley Renowned for its handwoven silks since the 9th century, the town of Margilan, in eastern Uzbekistan, remains the center of the country’s silk industry. The Yodgorlik Silk Factory still uses traditional silk production methods, and at the Gold Silk handicrafts center, visitors can witness the weaving and painting of the lustrous fabric.

Maritime provinces like Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (PEI) contain stunning scenery, especially during autumn, when the trees are ablaze with every shade of red and orange and a sense of tender nostalgia hangs in the air. The best way to get to know the charming provinces of Eastern Canada is to get in a car and set out on a road trip along the seaside.
The Cape Breton Highlands National Park, for example, is a must-visit once late summer begins to shift into fall. The Cabot Trail highway takes visitors nearly 300km through the mountainous preserve and treats them to views of the rugged northern Nova Scotia coastline. If you’re interested in staying closer to New Brunswick, head to Annapolis Valley. Located along the Bay of Fundy, the valley spans from Windsor to Digby and is best known for its abundance of locally grown fare and wine. Head to Digby for the freshest scallops in the country, or stop by Wolfville for a glass of Nova Scotian Tidal Bay wine.
“Nova Scotians and our neighbors in the Maritimes, in general, are a unique breed. ‘Consuming local’ is part of the vocabulary for many Canadians ... [and] folks around here have ‘support local’ ingrained in their DNA,” says Alexandre Morozov, lead winemaker at Benjamin Bridge.
The briny white wine, which can be sampled at many of the valley’s wineries, is the first and only officially recognized appellation of origin in Nova Scotia, meaning that its quality and authenticity are assured. Its characteristics tend to veer into cool and crisp territory, with a slightly briny finish owing to the fact that the local wine region coincides with the ancient Nova Scotian seabed.

Possibly the most picturesque little town in Nova Scotia and probably exactly what you’ve already conjured up in your mind when thinking of the East Coast of Canada, the fishing village of Lunenburg is well worth penciling into your road trip itinerary. The UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 1750s, offering some of the oldest standing architecture in the province. Lunenburg is about 100km from the provincial capital, Halifax. The small coastal town is very walkable and makes for an ideal place to stop and stretch your legs while learning more about the history of Nova Scotia.
The charming seaside fishing village is the premier destination in Nova Scotia for those looking to understand the fishing industry of Atlantic Canada. The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic walks visitors through the fishing heritage of the East Coast, with a crew of retired fishermen and on-site heritage interpreters available to take visitors through the permanent exhibit and wharfside boatyard.
Stop at the Old Fish Factory Restaurant when you’ve finished your tour; the historic eatery is tucked into a former fish processing plant and offers a smorgasbord of classic Nova Scotian fare, which includes such seafood as fresh lobster and hearty seafood chowder, pulled straight from the ocean and onto your plate.

If you’re already road-tripping through Nova Scotia, take the time to drive across the bridge to Prince Edward Island (PEI). Dubbed “Canada’s Food Island,” the 280km-long island is brimming with natural abundance and a culinary scene that rivals its bigger neighbors to the west. During the first two weeks of October, you can visit the PEI Fall Flavours Food & Drink Festival, which showcases all the best in produce, seafood and talent on the island. Otherwise, book a table at The Inn at Bay Fortune, where celebrity chef and author Michael Smith and his wife, Chastity Smith, host intimate dinner parties at his sprawling estate and farm. After a full itinerary of eating and indulging, the Island Walk — also known as the PEI Camino — offers serious walkers a way to experience the perimeter of the island at their own pace. This 700km loop, which officially launched in 2021, can be completed in one continuous effort of about 32 days for someone walking between 20 and 25km daily or in a leisurely, piecemeal fashion.

Literature lovers will want to make a stop at the Anne of Green Gables Museum before heading back to the mainland. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery spent most of her childhood at the PEI farmhouse that served as the real-world inspiration for the setting of the best-selling children’s series Anne of Green Gables. First published in 1908, the original novel has taken on many forms over the last century, from a television series to musical adaptations. Fans of the redheaded protagonist, Anne Shirley, should also visit the Green Gables Heritage Place, in Cavendish, while history buffs can make a 10-minute drive west to Montgomery’s birthplace in New London. The well-preserved home houses her notebooks, including early drafts of poems and stories.
As you follow the trail of Anne’s delightful adventures across the magical landscape of PEI, you’ll be touched by the local hospitality. And you may even come full circle as your nostalgic getaway brings you to a newfound sense of appreciation for present-day Maritime Canada.

Since its beginning in the 1960s as a market for essentials including groceries, tailoring and repairs, Meharchand Market has seen many a metamorphosis. Today, it is still a quiet stop for daily necessities, but you’ll also find indie design stores, boutique shops, charming cafés and restaurants. Walk the length of the market, browsing trendy clothing at Bombay Shirt Company and The Shop. The gleaming marble dome of Humayun’s Tomb soars above a carpet of trees. As sundowner spots go, this is not a shabby view. A 360,000m² green oasis in the heart of the city, Lodhi Gardens is studded with 15th-16th century tombs and flowering trees. The public park draws joggers and picnickers in every season. The domed monuments date back to the period of the Delhi Sultanate and the Moguls, but the park was built on the city’s outskirts in the 1930s by the British. Visitors will find a lake covered with geese, the historic Athpula Bridge, a rose garden and a bonsai park, not to mention the impressive Bara Gumbad, which may have originally served as a tomb.

You will likely recognize Griffith Observatory from its many appearances in movies set in Los Angeles. Opened to the public in 1935, the observatory sits on land donated to the city by Colonel Griffith J. Griffith to honor the colonel’s love of astronomy. Movies that highlight the observatory include La La Land (2016), Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and The Terminator (1984). Inside, you’ll find a planetarium and a Foucault pendulum. If you visit at sunset, you can see the entire city bathed in a scarlet glow.

Smorgasburg is an outdoor food market in Downtown Los Angeles. The project started in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC, and has since expanded to LA, Jersey City, Miami, Toronto and beyond. On market days, the area is filled with food trucks and bustling with visitors. You’ll find a wide variety of delicious food options, including lobster, oyster platters, tacos, barbecue and more. Recently, the market was featured in Season 3 of the Korean reality show 4 Wheeled Restaurant. The cast members visited and introduced Korean cuisine to the locals.

Warner Bros. is a 100-year-old entertainment company that has produced some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and TV series. The iconic shows Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Gilmore Girls were all mainly filmed at Warner Bros. Studios, in Burbank, as were classic films like Casablanca (1942). As the tallest building in Los Angeles, the Wilshire Grand Center has become an iconic LA landmark. You can see it in the movie C’mon C’mon (2021), produced by A24, directed by Mike Mills and starring Joaquin Phoenix. The building’s distinctive silhouette, inspired by the curves of Yosemite’s Half Dome and topped with a 90m-high spire, is visible from almost anywhere in the area, making a dramatic mark on the city skyline. In the building is the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel which offers panoramic views of the city from each guest room.

브룸 외곽에 위치한 갠시엄 포인트에선 1억 3000만 년 전 이곳에존재했던 공룡의 발자국을 따라 걸어볼 수 있다.가이드가 모닥불을 피우고 일행이 별이 총총 떠오른 하늘 아래에서 밤을 날 준비를 하는 사이, 브렌다와 나는 일몰을 보기 위해 바닷가로 향했다. 1만 3000여km에 달하는 서호주의 긴 해안은 황홀한 노을을 기대하는 이들을 실망시키지 않는다. 이 여정에 오르기 전까지 브렌다와 나는 일면식도 없는 사이였다. 킴벌리의 관문도시 브룸에서 댐피어 반도까지 이어진, 붉은 흙이 주단처럼 깔린 비포장도로를 달리며 우리는 자연스럽게 친구가 됐다. 피망 빛깔을 빼닮은 절벽이 산산이 부서지는 파도, 황금빛 모래와 만나는 레베크곶은 킴벌리 안에서도 최고의 절경으로 꼽힌다. 아득한 고대부터 형성된 지층, 웅장한 협곡, 번식력 강한 야생동물들이 들끓는 킴벌리는 인간의 손길이 닿지 않은 지구 바깥 미지의 세계처럼 보였다. 이 광활한 야생 속으로 우리를 데려가는 안내자는 ‘킴벌리 와일드’. 우리는 브룸에서 출발해 비글 베이와 롬바디나의 토착민 공동체를 거치는 핀단 트랙을 따라 달렸다. 레베크곶의 쿨자만에선 원주민 가이드 번디와 함께 원주민들의 문화와 역사, 사냥법, 약초와 전통 음식 등을 배울 수 있는 ‘부시 터커’ 투어를 경험했다. 우리에게 이 전통을 보여준 이들은 바르디자위족으로, 오래전부터 이 땅을 지켜온 원주민들의 지혜를 아주 가까이에서 느낄 수 있는 시간이었다.
While our guide stokes the fire and the group gets ready for a night under the stars, Brenda and I head towards the ocean for the sunset — a good spot is always guaranteed on this West Australian coast that stretches nearly 13,000km. We’re both traveling solo and have become firm friends since sharing the bumps on this red dirt road from Broome to the Dampier Peninsula. Where pimiento-hued cliffs meet crashing surf and golden sands, Cape Leveque is one of the Kimberley’s most stunning landscapes. And that’s saying something. With out-of-this-world, ancient geological formations, water-filled canyons and diverse ecosystems, the Kimberley has a reputation for untouched nature and extreme adventure. I’ve joined the Kimberley Wild Expeditions road trip, taking the Pindan track from Broome via the Indigenous communities at Beagle Bay and Lombadina. Bundy’s bush tucker tour is a highlight at Cape Leveque, giving us the chance to hear the wisdom of the Bardi Jawi traditional owners.

원주민 공동체 아르디알룬과 만날 수 있는 시그넷 베이로 향하는 길. 가이드는 우리에게 ‘바다악어’를 조심하라고 경고했다. 이 영리한 동물은 며칠 동안 인간의 동태를 살피며 육지와 바다 사이에서 사람들을 무력하게 가둘 준비를 한다. 해변에 자리한 야영지는 안전을 확인받았지만 야생의 자연 앞에서 누가 안전을 확신할 수 있을까? 그날 밤 야영지에서 멀리 떨어진 화장실을 찾아갈 때, 나를 유심히 지켜본 어느 악어의 야식거리가 될 수도 있다는 생각에 숨이 턱에 차오를 때까지 미친 듯이 달렸다. 간밤의 무시무시한 위협에서 살아남은 우리는 다시 브룸으로 돌아가 호텔에서 재정비를 했다. 내가 처음 브룸에 온 것은 약 20년 전. 호주의 여느 해안 마을과는 완전히 다른 풍광을 가진 이 독특한 도시는 진주 채취 산업과 케이블비치 리조트, 낙타 타기와 고래 관찰 투어로 잘 알려져 있다. 번화가엔 관광지 특유의 떠들썩한 분위기가 흐르지만 한쪽으론 여전히 개척 시대의 흔적이 생생하다. 파프리카 가루를 흩뿌려 놓은 듯한 붉은 흙벽, 청록색 해변이 강렬한 대비를 이루는, 내가 꿈꿔온 풍경으로 가득 찬 브룸의 매력은 나를 다시 이곳으로 데려다 놓았다.
댐피어 반도의 시그넷 베이 주변 지역에선 낭만적인 캠프파이어와 함께 만든 음식을 즐기며 밤을 보내는 캠핑을 경험할 수 있다. 
고요한 분위기가 감도는 브룸의 케이블비치. 절정의 풍경을 감상하고 싶다면 석양 무렵 낙타 등 위에서 해가 바다로 떨어지는 순간을 지켜보자.Continuing on to Ardyaloon and Cygnet Bay, we’re warned to keep a lookout for saltwater crocodiles. Apparently, these crocs are so intelligent they’ll watch our behavior for days, ready to trap helpless folk between land and the water’s edge. Our new coastal camp, I’m assured, has been checked, yet at night I make a mad, breathless dash for the distant bathroom block, convinced I might become a reptile’s midnight snack. Surviving the night, we head south again to Broome, enjoying the overnight hotel stop. I’d first visited Broome almost 20 years before, and it struck me then how different it is to other Australian coastal towns. Despite its international pearling history, Cable Beach resorts, camel rides and whale watching tours, it still has a frontier feel. It’s a place that has filled my dreams, its paprika earth and turquoise bays calling me back time and again.

서호주 최북단까지 올라왔다면 브룸을 할 수 있는 한 많이, 깊게 둘러보고 경험하길 권한다. 깁 리버 로드(이하 ‘깁’)는 킴벌리에서 가장 유명하기도 하지만 이름값만큼 악명도 높은 곳. 내륙 동쪽에서 북부 영토 경계선으로 향하는 장장 11일의 여정에서 나는 어마어마한 규모의 협곡과 폭포, 신비로운 바오바브나무, 영겁의 세월 전에 형성된 고대 암석을 만났다. 자연이 빚고 게워낸 광물과 식물도 물론 아름답지만 무엇보다 매력적인 것은 길 그 자체다. 깁은 쿠누누라 마을까지 이어지는 660여km의 흙길로 겁쟁이들은 쉬이 도전할 수 없는 길이다. 우리는 창문을 꽉꽉 틀어막아도 틈을 찾아 들어오는 흙먼지를 뒤집어쓴 채 울퉁불퉁한 길 위를 매일같이 달렸다. 아니, 달렸다기보단 차 안에서 하등 쓸모없고 무력한 생명체처럼 이리저리 튕겼다는 표현이 맞겠다. 구름 한 점 없는 하늘이 무자비하게 쏟아내는 뜨거운 땡볕 아래에서 반쯤 익어가는 경험까지 깁 위에 오른 이들이 겪는 모든 고충이 모험 그 자체다. 여정이 끝날 무렵 이민트지라는 동네의 한 기념품 가게에 들렀을 때 “나는 깁 리버 로드에서 살아남았다”라고 쓰인 범퍼 스티커를 살 수밖에 없었다.
Once you’ve made it this far north, there’s a strong compulsion to see as much of Australia’s largest state as possible. It’s from Broome again, on a later trip, that I experience one of the Kimberley’s major attractions, heading inland and east towards the Northern Territory border —the infamous Gibb River Road. And despite the incredible gorges, waterfalls, boab trees and ancient rock formations on this 11-day loop, it’s the road that’s a draw in itself. The Gibb is a 660km dirt track that travels east toward the town of Kununurra. Not for the faint-hearted, we’re bounced around daily on the corrugated dirt road like small, helpless things, covered in a fine layer of dust despite the closed windows. But it’s all part of the adventure, including being semi-cooked under those relentlessly hot, clear skies. Arriving at the Imintji local store later on the journey, I buy a bumper sticker that declares “I Survived the Gibb River Road,” in the vain hope that I do.

아가일 호수는 서호주에서 가장 큰 인공 호수다. 햇볕의 기세가 한풀 꺾인 오후 무렵 호수에 보트를 띄워 유유자적한 시간을 보내기 좋다. 거대하지만 독은 없는 비단뱀이 거만한 자태로 길을 막기 전까지 우리를 태운 차는 인간의 발자국이 단 한 번도 찍히지 않았을 것 같은 오지를 거침없이 내달렸다. 가이드가 차에서 내려 천연덕스럽게 드러누운 비단뱀을 가리키며 기념사진을 남기라고 했지만 고개를 바짝 쳐들고 우리를 쏘아보는 뱀을 보면서 나의 가련한 왼쪽 발목을 얼른 차 안으로 다시 구겨 넣었다. 그 후 일주일 동안 우리는 협곡과 그 안에 숨은 무수한 계곡을 찾아 걷고, 저 멀리에서 왈라비들이 우리를 훔쳐보는 눈길을 느끼며 잔잔하고 아름다운 아가일 호수에서 평화롭게 헤엄치고, 엘퀘스트로 지역에 위치한 제베디 온천에 들어가 좌충우돌 여정 동안 쌓인 여독을 풀었다. 해 질 무렵, 보석처럼 빛나는 윈드자나 계곡의 절벽을 지나 3억 5000만 년 전에 생겨난 산호초 ‘터널 크릭(디말루루)’에 도착한 우리는 캄캄한 동굴 같은 물속을 철벅철벅 걸어서 건넜다. “해롭진 않다”고 알려진 작은 민물 악어들이 물속에서 눈을 굴리며 우리를 유심히 지켜보고 있었다는 사실을 깨달은 건 물가에서 막 빠져나온 그 순간이었다.
With music blasting we hit the road, only to stop when there’s a huge but non-venomous python arrogantly blocking our way. My guide suggests I jump down from the 4WD to take a photo, but as it rears up I think better of it, pulling my vulnerable left ankle back into the truck. Over the next week we trek through canyons, visit numerous gorges and swim in the placidly beautiful Lake Argyle, watched by distant wallabies, and immerse ourselves in the warmth of Zebedee’s thermal springs. Windjana Gorge is a real gem at sundown, as the cliffs turn from ochre to burnished copper. At Tunnel Creek or Dimalurru, part of a 350-million-year-old former reef system, we quickly wade through dark waters, the small, semi-submerged, and allegedly harmless freshwater crocodiles eyeballing our every move until we surface safely on the other side.

킴벌리 동부의 윈덤 지역에 위치한 아가일 호수 근처에선 야생의 왈라비를 관찰할 수 있다.깁 중간쯤 위치한 매닝 협곡 안, 마운트 바넷 스테이션에서 한 야영은 내게 또 한 번의 스릴을 안겼다. 헤드 랜턴과 모닥불이 내는 불빛 한 점 없는 깜깜한 야영지 구석 자리에서 머리 위로 펼쳐진 그 은하수를 어떻게 잊을 수 있을까? 진정한 오지의 삶을 들여다볼 수 있는 엘퀘스트로 농장에선 말 위에 올라 금빛으로 물든 개울과 골짜기를 헤집고 다녔고 다음 날엔 에마 협곡에 숨어들어 고요한 시간을 보냈다. ‘벙글벙글’이라는 이름으로 잘 알려진 푸눌룰루의 거대한 돌기둥을 페르세우스자리 유성우가 내리는 밤에 만난 것은 일생의 큰 행운이었다. 다음 날, 헬리콥터에 올라 새의 시선으로 벌집 같은 돔 지대를 관찰하는 내내 지구의 경이에 입을 딱 벌릴 수밖에 없었다.
Camping at Mount Barnett station is yet another thrill, with the Milky Way appearing over our heads, best viewed from the pitch-black edges of camp, away from the head torches and fires. On the road we get a real insight into outback life, with visits to homesteads like El Questro where I decide to ride a horse in the late afternoon through golden-lit streams and valleys. The next day I revel in the tranquility of Emma Gorge. And Purnululu, better known as the Bungle Bungles, really puts on a show when those dome-shaped monoliths form the background to a Perseid meteor shower. A helicopter ride over the beehive-shaped domes the next day gives another perspective on this ancient topography, and time spent in Cathedral Gorge makes our jaws drop.

깁 위에서의 여정 덕에 오지에서의 삶에 제법 익숙해진 기분이다. 더는 딩고도, 야생 자연 속에서 텐트를 치고 하룻밤을 나는 일도 두렵지 않다. 오히려 침낭 하나 짊어지고 미지의 길 위로 떠나는 자유를 갈망하게 됐다. 아스팔트가 깔린 그레이트 노던 하이웨이에 올라 브룸으로 돌아가는 길, ‘살면서 이토록 평온한 기분을 느낀 적이 또 있었나?’ 하는 생각이 들었다. 지구에서 가장 외딴 오지에 작디작은 인간으로 존재했던 나날에서 인공조명과 사방으로 둘러싸인 벽을 가진 집으로, 편안한 도시 생활로 돌아가는 일이 오히려 슬프게 느껴졌다. 하지만 광활한 호주 서부에선 언제나 새로운 모험을 꿈꾸고 계획할 수 있다. 브렌다에게 전화해 수십억 년 전 형성된 철광층이 존재하는 카리지니와 필바라 여행을 함께할 생각이 있는지, 아니 이번엔 방대한 미첼 고원 안에 자리한 미첼 폭포에 갔다가 돛단배를 타고 킴벌리의 해안을 함께 둘러보지 않겠느냐고 물어봐야겠다.
I’ve quickly become accustomed to the outback life, no longer nervous about dingoes or sleeping out in the open. In fact, one begins to long for the freedom of the road, where your own swag bag — a comfy mattress wrapped up in hard-wearing canvas — can be unrolled almost anywhere you choose. Taking the Great Northern Highway back to Broome, the thought sinks in that I have never felt more at peace — just a small human on one of the most remote corners of our planet. It feels rather sad to be heading towards four walls and artificial lighting. But Western Australia is so vast, there’s always another adventure to plan. Time to call Brenda to see if she fancies a trip to Karijini and the Pilbara, or maybe the Mitchell Falls and a sail boat around the Kimberley coast this time.

At the Victoria Falls, located between Zambia and Zimbabwe, you can find something similar to a bungee jump, but with a twist: the Gorge Swing. After putting on the full-body harness, you grab the cable and head out onto the platform located 120m over the Zambezi River before making the leap and flying through the gorge at speeds of up to 180km/h.

Nearby the city of León, located in west Nicaragua, is Cerro Negro, the youngest volcano in Central America. The fastest zip wire in the world since 2013 and the longest in Europe, Velocity 2 is located in the Snowdonia region of Wales. Dazzling blue water fills the middle of Penrhyn Quarry, which was once the largest man-made pit in the world and is one of the world’s oldest slate quarries. Riding the 1.5km zipline over the quarry at speeds of more than 160km/h, you’ll feel an exhilarating surge of adrenaline. If you want to spend more time there, you can also speed through the quarry on a bumpy go-kart ride or take a tour in an old red military truck.

Canyoning, also known as gorge walking, is a great way to explore the magnificent canyons created by glaciers. In Switzerland's Valais region lies the small Alpine village of Blatten, where you can try canyoning at the Massa Gorge. Highlights include the straight 8m jump into a pool of water and the 30m abseiling site. If you’re a canyoning novice, you can visit Trümmelbach Falls in Interlaken for a half day of canyoning experiences, such as climbing, sliding, abseiling and even jumping into gorge pools.

In China’s Anhui Province, Huangshan Mountain is a place where towering granite peaks, steep cliffs and strange, wind-carved rock formations unfold in such a way that you might mistake it for a landscape painting. Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to Xihai (West Sea) Grand Canyon, which has a narrow staircase made of rugged rocks that will give you the thrill of walking on the edge of a cliff.

The momentary, extreme experience of breaking the ice and submerging yourself in the freezing cold water is known to help reduce stress and fatigue. Currently, there are more than 100 ice bathing clubs across this Northern European nation, including the Bodø Penguins, an enthusiastic group of ice bathers who partake in ice bathing and swimming almost every day.

It’s not every day that you find yourself in an unexpected space where gravity seems to disappear. The Dolomites in northern Italy offer myriad accommodation options, from small mountain huts to luxury hotels. Hotel Hubertus is one of them, but what makes it so popular these days is the “Hub of Huts,” a spa and sauna facility that resembles a series of upside-down huts. Since its opening last year, the hotel’s retreat space has quickly become the go to destination for travelers seeking out hotels like no other. The attraction, which is suspended some 15m above the ground, has two levels, with an open pool above and private saunas below.

For a dizzying hotel experience, head to the Skylodge Adventure Suites. Suspended over Cuzco’s Sacred Valley, you’ll have to climb about 400m just to check in. The vast Kruger National Park, a symbol of South Africa’s biodiversity, is home to a variety of wonderful lodges. Perched high on a massive granite boulder on Alaska’s Ruth Glacier is Sheldon Chalet. This tiny hotel — located within Denali National Park, which has the highest peak in North America — can only be reached by helicopter. It dates back to when Don Sheldon, an airline pilot who pioneered glacier landing techniques in the 1950s, set up a base camp for adventurers here in 1966. You can wake up to golden sunrises and explore the glacier during the day, taking in the stunning mountain views. 하동 화개면 정금차밭 정자 위. 화개천이 비단뱀처럼 산아래 마을을 휘감아 도는 쌍계 마을과 12만m² 면적의 차밭, 대낮에도 안개가 자욱한 지리산 능선이 발아래 그림처럼 펼쳐진다. 이곳에 1200여 년 전부터 이어져온 차밭이 있다는 건 알고 찾았지만, 드넓은 평야부터 깎아지른 골짜기까지 지천으로 찻잎이 나부끼는 풍광은 짐작 밖이었다. 차의 나라, 스리랑카의 누와라엘리야나 남인도 문나르의 장대한 차 농장 앞에 선다면 이런 감흥이 일까? 결 고운 파도처럼 보드랍게 일렁이는 초록 물결, 물기 잔뜩 머금은 공기에 실려 콧속을 훅 덮치는 짙은 차향에 취해 잠시 정신을 놓았다가 가까스로 정자 마루에서 엉덩이를 뗐다. 화개와 악양 곳곳, 빼곡하게 들어선 차밭과 다실이 나를 기다린다.
차밭 따라 순례 한국 차는 하동에서 시작됐다. <삼국사기> 안, “신라 흥덕왕 3년(828년), 당나라에 사신으로 갔다가 돌아온 대렴이 차 종자를 가지고 오자, 왕이 지리산에 심게 하였다”는 기록이 사실을 입증한다. 대렴이 왕의 명으로 차 씨앗을 심은 곳이 바로 쌍계사 일대다. ‘쌍계사 차나무 시배지’로 이름 붙은 약 2만 6000m²의 다원은 알고 있던 차밭과 조금 다른 모습이었다. 브로콜리처럼 동그랗고 앙증맞은 뭉텅이가 듬성듬성 심긴 이곳은 차나무가 타고난 그대로 자라도록 두는 야생 차밭이다.
Through the Tea Fields Korean tea originated in Hadong. This is proven by a passage in the Samguk Sagi (a historical record of three ancient kingdoms of Korea) which reads, “When a minister serving as an envoy to Tang Dynasty (618-906) China returned, in the third year of King Heungdeok of Silla’s reign (828), he brought tea plant seeds. The king had them planted on Jirisan Mountain.” At the king’s orders, the minister planted the seeds near Ssanggyesa Temple. Measuring 26,000m² or so, this particular dawon (tea plantation) is a wild tea field in which tea trees grow naturally wherever they happen to appear. After walking through the tea fields, which are guarded by a bamboo forest, I head to Ssanggyesa. Erected in 887, the Stele of Master Jingam of Ssanggyesa Temple, Hadong, stands 363cm tall and a National Treasure.

하동의 관광 명소 ‘최참판댁’. 대하소설 <토지>의 드라마 세트장으로 조선 후기 반가의 생활 모습을 엿볼 수 있다.대나무 숲이 호위하는 차밭 사이, 걷기 좋은 두렁을 산책하다 쌍계사로 향했다. 높이 3.63m, 887년에 세워진 국보 하동 쌍계사 진감선사탑비의 위용도 궁금했지만 실은 스님이 쟁여둔 차 한잔 얻어 마실 속셈이 더 컸다. 오후의 적막한 절 안에서 고개를 기웃대는 과객을 맞이해줄 이는 만나지 못했지만 다례와 차회 문화 등을 알려주는 쌍계사 다도학교의 수업 일정과 문의처를 입수한 것으로 만족했다.
하동에 자리한 대부분의 다원은 무료로 혹은 찻집을 겸하며 방문객을 기꺼이 맞는다. 하동세계차엑스포가 열린 올해 5월엔 ‘천년다향길’로 이름 붙은 다원길도 조성됐다. 차 시배지에서 출발하는 1코스와 정금마을 차밭에서 시작하는 2코스는 각각 4km 거리로, 1시간 안팎이면 충분히 둘러보는 쉬운 길. 차를 찾아 하동으로 내려오는 여행자들의 인구밀도를 높이는 데 일조한 놀루와 협동조합에서 다구와 하동 차, 다식과 돗자리를 살뜰히 챙겨 넣은 차 바구니를 빌린 후 차 농장이 한눈에 담기는 오두막, 야외 찻자리에 진을 쳤다. 그윽한 차향과 찻물 내리는 소리에 긴 숨을 뱉으며 승모근에 잔뜩 밴 긴장을 슬그머니 풀어본다. 코앞 차밭, 갓 핀 차순의 청순한 자태, 다 자란 찻잎에 맺힌 빛 망울을 한참 바라보다 내려둔 차가 다 식었지만 간만에 찾아온 몸과 마음의 평온이 참 좋아서 아무래도 상관없다고 생각했다.
Although I’m intrigued by the dignity of this structure, I’m more curious about how I could get a cup of tea from the monks. Most of the dawon in Hadong can be visited free of charge, or double as tea houses that are happy to welcome guests. The World Tea EXPO Hadong, held from May 4 to June 6 this year, featured a dawon walking trail called the “Millennium Path of Tea Fragrances.” Both Course 1, which departs from the Cultivated Site of Tea in Ssanggyesa, and Course 2, which begins at Jeonggeum Village Tea Field, are 4km in length. The paths are not difficult and can be easily completed in an hour or so. Nolluwa Coop apparently attracts many tea enthusiasts to Hadong. This is where I turn to rent a “tea basket” consisting of a tea brewing set, Hadong tea, tea confectionery and mats to sit on, then hold my very own outdoor tea party in a hut with a tea plantation view. With the tea fields right under my nose, I gaze for some time before realizing my tea has gone cold. Nevertheless, it’s no big deal as I enjoy the peaceful feeling that soon comes over me.

팽주와 마주 앉아 “한국 사람들이 정을 나누는 마음으로 ‘다음에 밥 한 끼 먹자’라고 말하잖아요. 하동에선 그 말 대신 ‘차 한잔하자’라고 해요. 이 동네에선 그 말이 인사나 다름없죠.” 차망에 찻잎을 넉넉히 쏟고 끓인 물을 조르륵 따라 부으며 김정옥 팽주(차를 우려 내려주는 사람)가 자연스럽게 말문을 연다. 간결하고 군더더기 없는 손동작, 기지개를 켜며 꽃처럼 피어오르는 어린 찻잎이 시선을 뺏는 이곳은 화개면 목압마을 관아수제차. 화개동천 끝자락, 무제깃이라는 이름을 가진 약 3만 3000m² 차밭에서 직접 농사짓고 한 잎 한 잎 손으로 똑똑 딴 후 달궈진 무쇠솥에 덖어낸 귀한 차를 음다(飮茶, 차를 마심)할 수 있는 다원이다.
Sitting Across From a Paengju “Koreans tend to say ‘let’s get a meal together’ out of jeong (deep connection to a person or an object). Well, in Hadong you say ‘let’s get a cup of tea’ instead. In this neighborhood, it’s basically an everyday greeting,” says paengju (tea server) Kim Jung-ok as she pours a generous amount of tea leaves into a sieve and fills my cup with piping hot tea. Located on the edge of Hwagaedongcheon Stream, Gwana Handmade Tea, in Mokap Village, is a dawon where you can enjoy hand-roasted tea grown here on 33,000m² of tea fields.

“차 농가엔 대부분 집주인이 마시려고 만들어 둔 차가 있어요. 집집마다 김치 맛이 다르듯 차 맛도 다 다릅니다. 찻잎 본연의 맛부터 수확기, 덖는 법, 내리는 법 등이 다르니까요. 하동에 왔다면 이 다원, 저 다원 다니며 각기 다른 차 맛을 경험하고, 자기 입맛에 꼭 맞는 차 취향을 찾아보세요.” 직접 말린 곶감과 양갱, 제철 과일 등을 곁들여 낸 다식만큼이나 찻자리는 격의 없고 편안했다. 팽주는 “잠자리 날개 같은 옷 입고 엄숙한 분위기에서 즐기는 다례가 아니라 보리물 한잔 마시듯 편안하게 차를 즐기는 차 마을의 일상을 보여주고 싶었다”고 말한다. 안개가 잦고 습도가 높으며 낮밤의 기온차가 커 차가 맛향 좋게 무르익기에 좋은 재배 환경, 하동 차를 고유하게 하는 덖음 기술부터 다채로운 차 맛을 만드는 제다 기법까지 흥미로운 얘기들을 쉴 새 없이 들으며 3가지 차를 십수 잔 비우고 나서야 1시간 30분이 흘렀다는 사실을 알아차렸다. 다음 일정이 있어 아쉬움을 뒤로 하고 길을 재촉했다.
“When it comes to tea farming, most teas were created by the farmers for their own enjoyment,” says Kim. “Every house’s tea tastes a little different, just like with kimchi. There are differences in everything from the natural taste of tea leaves to the harvest period, the hand-roasting method and even how you pour it. Since you’re here in Hadong, I recommend visiting a number of dawon to try the different flavors and see what you like.” This tea sampling, known as dadam (tea and conversation), is quite informal. “Rather than a tea ceremony where people wear formal clothes and the atmosphere is rigid, we want to show you an ordinary day in the life of a tea village where people casually enjoy a cup of barley tea,” the paengju tells me. She has countless intriguing stories to tell — she talks about the fantastic growing conditions in Hadong due to the frequent fog, high humidity and large temperature gap between day and night. All these factors improve the flavor of the tea. Then there are the hand-roasting techniques that give Hadong tea its unique taste, and the manufacturing techniques for creating a wide range of tea flavors.

스무 걸음 정도 떨어진 아랫집을 찾은 건 차 덖는 솥과 모습을 볼 수 있다는 얘길 들어서다. 구경 전, 일단 차 한잔하라는 권유에 들어간 곳이 효월 이기영 차 명인의 다실이었다는 것, 그가 내어준, 찬물로 6분 우려 진액처럼 내린 그 차가 고급 보이차보다 갑절 귀한 ‘천상의 이슬차’라는 것을 가기 전엔 꿈에도 몰랐다. 수십만 평 차밭이 뿜어내는 향을 응축한 것 같은 풍미가 미뢰를 순식간에 장악한 일곱 방울짜리 차 한 잔은 충격적인 경험이었다. 두 번째로 우린 차를 찻잔에 똑똑 떨어뜨리며 이기영 명인이 제대로 된 음미법을 알려줬다. “차를 그냥 넘기지 말고 혀 위에 올려 가만히 머금어보세요. 하늘이 맑아지는 청명에 어린순을 따서 구중구포(아홉 번 찌고 아홉 번 말리는 제다법)의 정성을 들여 만든 차입니다. 마시는 즉시 기운이 솟고 눈도 맑아지는 기분이 느껴질 거예요.” ‘천 잔을 대신하는 한 방울’을 스물한 방울이나 마시며 차로 중병에서 목숨을 구한 조선의 승려 범해 선사 이야기를 떠올렸다. 차가 누군가의 병을 고치는 건 약리적 효능이 아니라 차를 ‘챙겨’ 마시는 시간이 주는 여유 덕 아닐까? 그런 생각을 하며 팽주가 건네는 찻잎을 손등에 올려놓고 귀한 산삼처럼 꼭꼭 씹어 먹었다.
After this, I visit a nearby house because I’ve heard that it’s a place where you can see tea being hand-roasted. It turns out that it’s the home of renowned Tea Master Lee Gi-yeong. The tea here is made by producing a resin-like substance after it’s been steeped in cold water for six minutes. I have a chance to try this “heavenly morning dew tea” that is rarer (and more expensive) than the finest pu’er tea. I’m shocked that a mere seven drops of this tea are able to captivate my taste buds. It’s as if the fragrance emanating from an entire tea field has been infused into a single cup. After pouring me the second variety, Lee explains the proper way to taste tea. “Don’t rush it, just let it sit on your tongue and hold it in your mouth,” he says. “As soon as you drink it, you’ll feel your spirits soar and your eyes become a little brighter.”

한국 전통 차 사발의 본고장, 사기아름마을. 조선시대의 역사를 이어 사발과 다구 등을 빚는 명인들의 도요가 이 마을에 모여 있다. 흙 빚는 마을 다원을 순회하며 음다를 즐기다가 뜨겁게 우린 차를 여린 풀의 맑은 향 그대로, 한 김 식혀 마실 수 있게 해주는 차 사발에 마음을 뺏겼다. 하동이 사발의 고장이라는 사실은 이곳이 (한국) 차의 고향이라는 사실보다 덜 알려진 역사. 차의 세계에 깊이 빠진 이라면 으레 아는 명물, 조선에선 막사발이라는 이름으로 대강 쓰던 그릇이었지만 일본으로 건너가 국보로 격상한 ‘이도 다완’의 원류지가 하동이라는 이야기가 전해진다. 그 ‘설’을 눈으로 직접 확인하고 싶어 진교면 백련리 사기아름마을을 찾았다. 백련리의 옛 이름, 새미골(샘골)을 일본식 한자로 옮기면 ‘이도’가 되며 임진왜란 때 도공들이 일본으로 끌려가기 전까지 이곳에 도요가 몰려 있었다는 사실을 입증하는 발굴 유물 등이 설을 받치는 근거다. 세월이 흘러 군데군데 지워진 역사를 샅샅이 밝혀내기란 어렵지만, 좋은 흙과 가마터를 가진 새미골의 가치를 알아보고 터를 잡은 현대 도예가들의 공간이 찾아오는 이들을 반갑게 맞는다. 40여 년 전부터 이곳에 정착해 가마에 장작불을 지핀 ‘하동요’의 후암 정웅기 도예가도 그중 한 명이다.

A Village of Potters After touring the dawon and enjoying a variety of teas, I develop a soft spot for the tea bowls that make it possible to drink tea after it has cooled down, able to retain the grassy aroma of freshly brewed, piping hot tea. While Hadong is widely known as the birthplace of Korean tea; the fact that it’s also the home of Korean bowls called maksabal is less-well-known. It’s said that Hadong is the birthplace of a famous ido chawan (the Japanese term for maksabal) that was taken to Japan and elevated to the status of a national treasure there. Used during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), these bowls are familiar to anyone well-versed in the world of tea. I head to Sagiareum Village to investigate this pottery legacy with my own two eyes. Although some traces of the past here have faded over time, a number of modern-day potters have settled on this location due to the value of the soil and its kiln facilities. Their workshops welcome all those who come knocking. One of these potters is Jeong Ung-gi of Hadongyo, who has been firing ware for more than 40 years.

하동요의 가마터. 마을 안 ‘옛 가마터’에선 조선시대 막사발의 파편이 대량 출토됐다. “하동은 흙에 모래가 섞인 고령토의 고장입니다. 고령토 도자의 파편을 확대해서 들여다보면 표면에 숨구멍이 있어요. 안팎으로 공기가 드나들기 좋다는 뜻이지요. 기공이 찻잎의 독성을 섬세하게 거르며 차 맛을 부드럽게 끌어올려 줍니다.” 그가 “손 안을 가득 채우는 부드러운 곡선, 사발 안에 차를 따랐을 때 느껴지는, 어머니의 품같이 따뜻한 감촉, 단단하고 견고한 굽이 이루는 완벽한 균형”을 갖춘 막사발의 세계를 찬탄할 때 눈앞에 놓인 하동요 다완을 조심스럽게 손에 쥐었다. 빛무리가 쏟아지는 섬진강 모래톱의 색을 꼭 닮은 빛깔도 아름다웠지만 투박한 질감과 울퉁불퉁한 결, 찻물이 들어 생긴 금 같은 것을 자연의 섭리처럼 품은 사발의 흠에 마음이 더 갔다. 힘을 툭 뺀 무심이란 경지가 형태가 된다면 이런 모습일까? 하동에서 차의 기운과 흙의 힘에 매료되어 퇴로 없는 ‘차의 세계’에 깊이 빠져들었다.
흙의 힘과 자연의 섭리 그리고 자신의 철학을 ‘사발’에 담는 도예가 정웅기 “Hadong is the home of kaolin clay, which is soil mixed with sand,” explains Jeong. “If you zoom in on a fragment of kaolin clay pottery, you can see breathing holes on the surface. This means it’s easy for the air to pass through. The air holes delicately filter the toxicity out of tea leaves, which gives the tea a smoother taste.”
As Jeong speaks of the world of maksabal — its “soft curves that fill your hands, a warm feeling like a mother’s embrace that you can feel when you pour the tea, and a perfect balance formed from the rigid and sturdy bases” — I carefully pick up the Hadongyo tea bowl in front of me. The beautiful hue resembles the color of the Seomjingang River’s sandy banks, illuminated by flowing light, but I’m more taken in by the rough texture and the tiny cracks that have resulted from exposure to hot tea, the flaws of the bowl that have come about through nature running its course. Is this what perfection looks like?
In Hadong, I’ve been captivated by the energy of tea and the power of soil, swept into the world of tea, with no escape in sight.

The House of Choi Cham-Pan was created for the drama adaptation of the novel Toji. In addition to getting a peek into the lifestyle of a prominent Joseon-era (1392-1910) household, the views of Jirisan Mountain and Seomjingang River unfolding behind its windows and doors are a great reason to visit.

한식의 이미지는 꽤 오랫동안 불고기나 김치 혹은 한국식 바비큐같은 음식이 차지해왔다. 하지만 최근 한식을 상징하는 새로운 키워드로 채식이 주목받고 있다. 한국의 국토는 약 70%가 산으로 덮여 있다. 산에서 쉽게 얻을 수 있는 식물을 요리한 음식이 식습관에 깊이 녹아들 수밖에 없는 환경이었다. 한식의 기본을 이룬 밥과 반찬 문화에서도 반찬을 차지하는 것은 대부분 산과 들에서 나는 채소를 이용한 음식이다. 덕분에 300여 가지의 채소를 온갖 방법으로 요리하는데, 대표적인 것이 바로 나물이다.
나물은 산이나 들에서 채취한 풀이나 나뭇잎 등을 삶고 볶거나 날것으로 양념해 무친 음식이다. 우리 민족은 오래전부터 제철 채소를 이용해 나물을 해 먹었다. 조선시대 왕들은 흉년으로 먹을 것이 부족한 백성들을 위해 각종 구황서를 편찬해 나물 조리법을 소개했다. 겨울부터 새싹이 돋지 않는 이른 봄까지 먹을 수 있도록 채소를 말려두었다가 먹는 묵은 나물도 발달했다. 묵은 나물은 활용도가 높을 뿐만 아니라 마르는 과정에서 발효돼 영양소도 더 많다. 아직도 한국인의 밥상에는 나물이 빠지지 않는다. 곡물이 부족할 땐 주린 배를 채워주는 구황식이었지만, 지금은 훌륭한 건강식으로 활용된다.
For quite some time, the image of Korean food has been dominated by dishes like bulgogi, kimchi and Korean barbecue. Recently, however, the nation’s vegetarian cuisine has been gaining traction abroad. About 70% of the Korean Peninsula is covered by mountains, so food prepared from plants growing on forested slopes are deeply embedded in Korean dietary habits. Rice is served with banchan (side dishes), which form the foundation of Korean cuisine, and most banchan feature local vegetables. The 300-plus types of vegetables and edible plants in Korea are prepared in many ways, most commonly as namul (greens and other plants gathered from mountains and fields and then boiled, sautéed, seasoned or served raw). The kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) compiled various official texts to introduce namul recipes to the people, thus helping them get through lean years. This led to the development of mugeun namul (dried or preserved vegetables), which are intended to be eaten when fresh ingredients are unavailable. This type of namul is not only extremely versatile but also more nutritious due to the benefits of fermentation.
나물과 함께 한국의 채식에서 빼놓을 수 없는 것이 고유의 발효식품인 장이다. 콩을 주원료로 발효시켜 만든 한국의 장은 곰팡이, 세균, 효모를 모두 이용한 복합 발효의 산물이다. 오랜 세월 동안 한식의 단백질 보충 역할까지 해줬다. 간장, 고추장, 된장, 청국장 등은 거의 모든 종류의 한식에 고루 사용되고, 맛을 결정짓는다. 나물이 한국 채식 문화의 근간이라면, 장은 나물을 가능하게 했던 토양과 같은 존재. 장이 나물의 소스 역할을 함으로써 무치고 버무리는 등 다채롭고 건강한 채식을 완성시켰다.
전 세계의 채식 문화는 단순히 건강이라는 이유에서 벗어나 동물복지와 환경문제, 명상이나 요가 등 정신적 가치로까지 확장하고 있다. 때문에 자연과 내면에 집중하는 한국의 사찰 음식이 변화하는 채식 트렌드와 맞물린 것은 당연한 결과다. 사찰 음식이 현재까지 한국 채식 다양성의 최전선에 있는 것도 이런 이유에서다. 2021년, 런던의 요리학교인 르 코르동 블루는 사찰 음식을 채식 전문과정의 정규과목으로 채택했다. 본교인 르 코르동 블루 파리에는 지난해 사찰 음식 전문가 홍승 스님이 방문해 한국의 전통 장으로 만드는 사찰 음식을 소개했다.
Another staple of Korean vegetarianism is jang (traditional fermented pastes). Made from soybeans, jang are created through a fermentation process involving fungi, bacteria and yeast. For centuries, jang served as an important source of protein in Korean cuisine. Comprising ganjang (soy sauce), gochujang (red pepper paste), doenjang (fermented soybean paste) and cheonggukjang (lightly fermented soybean paste), they’re used as flavor-enhancers in innumerable Korean dishes. More and more people worldwide are becoming interested in vegetarianism not just for their health, but also for the sake of animal welfare and the environment, and in tandem with spiritual pursuits like meditation and yoga. It’s no surprise, then, that Korean temple food, with its focus on the natural world and inner reflection, aligns with this cultural shift. In 2021, esteemed culinary school Le Cordon Bleu incorporated temple food in its vegetarian course of study in London. Also last year, the Ven. Hong Seung, a Buddhist nun and temple food specialist, visited Le Cordon Bleu in Paris to introduce this cuisine.
한국의 장은 지금도 한국인의 식탁에 없어서는 안 될 중요한 식문화 중 하나다. 학과장인 에릭 브리파는 한국을 찾아 템플스테이를 하며 사찰 음식을 배워갔다. 정관 스님은 지난해 암스테르담에서 셰프, 아티스트들과 함께 식기부터 음식까지 자연에서 영감을 받아 선보이는 행사를 펼쳤다. 사찰 음식의 대가로 불리는 정관 스님은 전라남도 백양사 천진암의 주지 스님이자 넷플릭스 음식 다큐멘터리 <셰프의 테이블> 시즌 3 주인공 중 한 명이다.
해외에서 활동하는 유명한 한국 셰프들도 한국식 채식을 선보인다. 뉴욕의 레스토랑 나로는 한식을 모던하게 재해석한 채식주의자 코스를 판매한다. 나로는 <미쉐린 가이드> 2스타를 받은 뉴욕의 파인 다이닝 레스토랑 아토믹스에서 지난해 말 오픈한 신생 레스토랑이다. 김부각, 감자전, 가지튀김, 참외 화채 등이 나오는 채식 코스에서 가장 큰 탄성이 터지는 메뉴는 바로 탕평채. 궁중 음식을 대표하는 전채 요리인 탕평채를 화려하게 재탄생시켰다.
The head of the school’s Paris institute, Éric Briffard, even visited Korea this year to learn more about these traditional Buddhist dishes. The Ven. Jeong Kwan, meanwhile, recently held an event in Amsterdam, showcasing a nature-inspired spread in order to promote the concept of communal living. Known as the master of temple food, the Ven. Jeong Kwan gained international recognition by being featured on the Netflix food documentary Chef’s Table. Famous Korean chefs working abroad have also been creating Korean-style vegetarian dishes. Opened late last year by the owners of New York’s two-Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, Atomix, Naro offers a quality vegetarian course. Naro’s tangpyeongchae (mung bean jelly with vegetables), an iconic Korean court dish, has been given a glamorous makeover fit for New York City.
해외 채식주의자들도 한식에서 새로운 답을 찾고 있다. 지난해 프랑스 루브르박물관에서 열린 한식 박람회에선 샐러드를 대체할 수 있는 한국의 채식 메뉴를 찾으러 온 사람들로 문전성시를 이뤘다. 먹거리 천국이라고 불리는 홍콩의 채식주의자들 사이에선 한국산 청과물이 불티나게 팔리고, 소스까지 100% 식물성으로 만든 한국 만두도 인기다.
이런 가운데 한국의 채식 문화는 가치소비를 중시하는 MZ세대의 트렌드와 만나 진화 중이다. 2008년까지 15만 명이던 한국의 채식 인구는 2022년 기준 약 200만 명으로 추정된다. 이들은 다이어트나 건강뿐만 아니라 기후 위기, 공장식축산 반대, 윤리적소비 등을 이유로 채식에 관심을 가진다. 식품 브랜드 오뚜기는 영국 비건 소사이어티에서 인증받은 비건 전문 브랜드 ‘헬로베지’를 론칭했고, 농심은 식품업계 최초로 비건 레스토랑 ‘포리스트키친’을 오픈했다. 서울의 일부 학교는 채식 선택제를 급식에 도입했다. <미쉐린 가이드> 스타를 받은 고급 레스토랑들은 저마다 모던하게 개발한 채식 메뉴를 선보인다. 세계 채식 문화의 판도를 바꾸고 있는 한국의 채식은 이제야 태동기가 끝났다.
Vegetarians in other nations are also finding new answers in Korean cuisine. Last year’s Korean food fair at the Louvre, in France, was packed with people looking for Korean vegetarian alternatives to salad, while in Hong Kong, 100% plant-based Korean dumplings have become a favorite among local vegetarians. Korean vegetarianism is thriving, changing the face of vegetarianism around the world.

2012년부터 2016년까지 순차적으로 개장한 경의선숲길은 서울미래유산으로 선정됐다. 서울의 옛 이름 경성의 ‘경’과 북한 도시 신의주의 ‘의’를 따서 이름 지은 경의선은 한반도를 남북으로 관통하는 철길이었다. 1904년부터 1906년까지 일본에 의해 건설된 철길은 분단 이후 달리지 못하고 남게 됐는데, 서울시가 옛 철길이 된 6.3km 구간을 숲으로 조성해 산책로로 탈바꿈했다. 과거 철길의 흔적을 보존하기 위해 남겨둔 레일이 길 곳곳에 보이는데, 특히 홍대 앞 와우교부터 서강대역까지 이어지는 370m 숲길, 와우교 구간에서 만날 수 있다. 봄이면 벚꽃 피는 대흥동 일대, 여름은 푸릇한 메타세쿼이아 길이 있는 염리동 일대, 가을엔 은행나무가 길게 뻗은 연남동 일대를 걸어보길.
Built by Japan between 1904 and 1906, the Gyeongui Line was once a railroad that ran north to south through the Korean Peninsula, which fell into disuse after the division of Korea. The Seoul City government transformed an abandoned 6.3km section of the railroad into a greenbelt with a walking path. Sections of rails have been preserved throughout the park, which was selected as a Seoul Future Heritage site. Not to be missed are the metasequoia-lined road of Yeomni-dong neighborhood in summer and Yeonnam-dong’s long row of gingko trees in autumn.
경의선숲길에서 눈에 띄는 곳 중 하나인 새빨간 벽돌 건물. 숲길이 개통된 시기부터 자리한 ‘숲길 터줏대감’ 비로소 커피다. 산지를 직접 방문해 원두를 공수하는 것이 특징. 에티오피아, 엘살바도르, 콜롬비아 등을 찾아 커피 맛은 물론 작업환경이나 청결도를 확인한 뒤 직거래한다. 덕분에 국내에선 생소한 희귀 원두나 3대에 걸친 장인의 원두, 숨겨진 로컬 토착 원두로 만든 커피를 다양하게 맛볼 수 있다.
Biroso Coffee’s specialty is its hand-selected beans, as the owner goes directly to the source. Traveling in person to countries like Ethiopia, El Salvador and Colombia, he checks not only the coffee’s flavor, but also the working environment and sanitation of the plantation before making a purchase.
As a result, you can taste coffee made using beans sourced from third-generation growers as well as lesser-known indigenous beans.

소리 명상, 요가, 프리 댄스, 다도 등 다채로운 프로그램이 많다.개성 넘치는 MZ세대의 천국 홍대 지역 한가운데, 템플스테이가 가능한 사찰이 있다. ‘글로벌 수행 놀이터’를 표방하는 저스트비 홍대선원은 명상과 게스트하우스를 결합한 공간이다. 번잡한 도심에 있다는 게 믿기지 않을 정도로 고요하고 평화로운 분위기를 자아낸다. 세계 일주와 유학, 미국 채식 프랜차이즈 창업 등 독특한 이력을 쌓은 준한 스님과 백담 스님을 비롯한 스태프가 직접 공사하고 지난해 오픈했다. 9월에는 오픈 1주년을 기념해 인근에 있는 클럽 ‘템플’과 협업 파티를 할 예정. 참선에 물리적 경계를 두지 않는다는 의미로 클럽에서 저녁 예불을 한 뒤 밤새 함께 춤추고 백팔배를 하는 일정이다.
Even in the hip area of Hongdae, it’s possible to experience a temple stay. JustBe Temple, which claims to be a “global Zen meditation playground,” is a unique space where guesthouse meets meditation. Two Buddhist monks, the Ven. June Han and Ven. Baek Dham, built the temple themselves, completing the construction last year. To celebrate its one-year anniversary, a party will be held at Hongdae’s Club Temple in September. Signifying that there are no physical boundaries to meditation, attendees will take part in a Buddhist ceremony, followed by all-night dancing and the 108 bows of Korean Zen.
GYEONGUI LINE FOREST PARK
벨기에의 국민 캐릭터 스머프로 꾸민 소규모 테마파크다. 지난해 강남에 첫 매장을 연 이후 주말에는 예약이 힘들 정도로 인기를 얻어 최근 홍대점까지 오픈했다. 게임은 테이블에 앉은 채 프로젝터의 이야기를 따라가며 진행되는데, 가가멜로 인해 불에 탄 스머프 마을을 구하기 위해 똘똘이 스머프가 되는 콘셉트다. 1팀에 최대 4명까지, 한 타임에 5팀이 들어갈 수 있다. 국내에만 있는 스머프 테마파크인 데다 영어까지 지원돼 외국 관광객에게도 인기다.
The Smurfs Magic Forest is a small theme park based on the popular Belgian characters the Smurfs. The venue offers a game called Papa Smurf’s Magic Lab, which is similar to an escape room. Players take on the role of Brainy Smurf in order to save the burning Smurf Village from the evil Gargamel. Five groups of up to four people can enter at a time. Both Korean and English games are available.
인디문화의 상징과도 같은 홍대 지역에 자리한 국내 최초의 독립영화 전용관이다. 2007년 개관 이후 약 15년의 종로 생활을 끝내고 지난해 홍대 부근으로 이전했다. 꾸준히 한국 독립영화 소개와 개봉 지원, 인디다큐페스티발 등을 진행해왔고 최근에는 독립영화 포럼, 토크 행사, 퀴어영화 축제, 동물 영화 상영회 같은 행사를 개최했다. 입장 수익과 나눔 자리 후원금 등으로 운영되는 만큼, 상영관 통로에는 배우 송혜교, 정우성, 하정우를 비롯한 유명 배우와 감독 등 후원 영화인들의 명패가 걸려 있다. 대개 하루 네 편 정도 각기 다른 독립영화를 상영한다. 한국 독립영화의 현재를 알고 싶은 여행자에게 추천.
Opened in 2007, Indiespace was the first movie theater in Korea to focus on independent films. After roughly 15 years in Jongno-gu District, it relocated to Hongdae last year. Over the years, the theater has held premieres, indie documentary festivals, forums and queer film festivals. The theater is supported by the profits from admission fees as well as a seat sponsor program, so the aisles are lined with the nameplates of famous directors and actors who’ve donated, including Song Hye-kyo and Jung Woo-sung. Four or so different indie films are shown each day.

마포구 대흥동에서 시작해 신수동, 염리동, 연남동 등을 관통하는 경의선숲길에서 가장 활기를 띠는 연남동 구간을 칭한다. 길쭉한 모양과 양쪽을 빽빽이 채운 건물이 뉴욕의 센트럴파크를 연상시킨다 해서 생긴 별명. 많은 청년과 외국인이 방문하는 만큼 공연이나 버스킹, 가수들의 게릴라콘서트가 수시로 열리고 다른 지역에서 주관하는 팝업스토어나 국제적 행사도 종종 개최된다. 언제든 공원에 앉아 활기 넘치는 도심을 즐길 수 있지만, 주거지역의 소음 피해를 방지하기 위해 늦은 밤엔 야외 음주를 제한한다.
Gyeongui Line Forest Park starts in Mapo-gu District’s Daeheung-dong neighborhood, and runs through areas including Sinsu-dong, Yeomni-dong and Yeonnam-dong. Yeontral Park is the moniker of the Yeonnam-dong stretch — the liveliest section. Yeontral Park was so nicknamed because its elongated shape and the surrounding buildings make it reminiscent of New York’s Central Park. The park’s a magnet for young people and, as such, there are lots of performances, including busking and surprise guerrilla concerts. It’s also common to see pop-up stores and international events there.

연트럴파크의 시끌벅적한 분위기에서 살짝 벗어나고 싶다면 단 몇 걸음 떨어진 끝남동으로 향해보자. ‘연남동의 끝’이라는 뜻을 지닌 이곳에는 작고 사랑스러운 카페와 편집 숍, 식당, 독립 서점, 공방 등이 숨어 있다. 가게들은 오래된 주택을 리모델링하거나 협소 주택을 개조해 개성 있는 공간으로 운영 중. 끝남동에는 유독 독립 서점이 많다. 그중 아트북, 그래픽노블 등 시각 예술 서적 위주의 작품을 모은 사슴책방과 한국 소설을 주로 다루는 책방서로는 놓치면 아까운 공간.
If you’re looking to escape the busyness of Yeontral Park, head to an area just a few steps away that has been dubbed “Kkeunnam-dong.” Meaning “the end of Yeonnam-dong neighborhood,” Kkeunnam-dong boasts small, lovely cafés, boutiques, restaurants, independent bookstores, workshops and other hidden gems. Among the independent bookstores, Deer Bookshop, with its collection of art books and graphic novels, and Seorobooks, which mainly sells Korean novels, are not to be missed.

2011 월드클래스 국내 결선 우승자 이민규 바텐더가 아내와 함께 차린 칵테일 바. 바는 어둡고 폐쇄적인 공간이라는 선입견을 깨기 위해 여러 장소를 둘러보던 부부는 볕 잘 들고 마당 있는 이 집을 발견하곤 고민 없이 자리를 잡았다. 시즌마다 제철 식재료를 이용한 신메뉴를 개발하는데, 가을에는 사과주스와 군밤을 가니시로 이용한 ‘바밤하이볼’을 추천한다. 스테이크를 주문하면 마당에 있는 그릴에서 직접 구워주는 것도 특별하다.
Run by Lee Min-kyu (Mickey Lee) — a 2011 Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year — and his wife, Yeonnam Mashil is a cozy bar situated in a sunny house with a great yard and an even better drinks menu. Each season, they develop new menu items using seasonal ingredients. The Babam Highball, made with apple juice and garnished with roasted chestnuts, is highly recommended. If you order a steak, they’ll grill it for you in the yard, making for a special experience.

“다이내믹 서울, 불이 꺼지지 않는 도시, 600년 역사의 수도”, 서울의 알려진 인상은 대략 이렇다. 자신이 살아가는 도시의 근원과 역사를 속속들이 아는 이는 드물 것이다. 대부분 경관이 어떻게 변하는지, 새로운 흥밋거리가 무엇인지 발빠르게 알기 위해 정보에 귀를 기울일 뿐이다.
2017년부터 2년마다 열려온 서울도시건축비엔날레(이하 ‘비엔날레’)는 이 도시가 삶의 터전인 이들에게 서울을 다른 각도로 바라보게 하는 열쇠로 기능한다. 9월 1일에 완전한 모습을 드러내는 제4회 비엔날레는 “땅의 도시, 땅의 건축”이라는 주제로 “100년 후 서울을 어떻게 만들 것인가”라는 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 머리를 맞대는 장이다.
Few of us know the actual roots and history of the city we inhabit. Most of us just keep our ears to the ground to keep up with changes in the landscape and stay on top of what’s new.
For those who call Seoul home, the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, held every two years since 2017, serves as a key to seeing the city in a different light.
The theme of the fourth edition, which runs from September 1 to October 29, is “Land Architecture, Land Urbanism.” The event centers on the question “How do we shape the Seoul of 100 years from now?” The biennale highlights Seoul as a “city connected to the land,” considering the confluence of earth, water and wind and investigating possibilities and new directions for the future. Architect Byoung Soo Cho, curator and general director of the main exhibition, Land Architecture, Land Urbanism as well as Seoul 100-Year Masterplan Exhibition: Seoul Multi-Layered Ground, shared his reasons for drawing the blueprint for “the Seoul of 100 years from now.”

미래를 예측하기 위해서는 과거를 탄탄하게 알 필요가 있다. 이번 비엔날레는 서울이 땅과 물과 바람의 흐름을 잇는 ‘땅의 도시’임을 천명하고 그 지점을 미래와 잇는다. 메인 전시인 주제전 <땅의 도시, 땅의 건축>과 서울 100년 마스터플랜전 <서울 그린 네트워크>의 큐레이터이자 총감독을 맡은 조병수 건축가는 ‘100년 후 서울’의 청사진을 그린 까닭을 다음과 같이 밝혔다.
“조선시대에는 건축물을 복층으로 짓는 것을 금지했어요. 효율성을 필요로 하는 현대 도시에 부합하지 못해 흔적이 거의 남아 있지 않습니다. 일제강점기, 6·25 등 큰 역사적 사건을 지나고 급속한 산업화과정을 맞으며 도로의 기능, 건물의 양적팽창에 집중한 결과 우리의 도시는 자연(땅)에 대한 훼손이나 콘텍스트에 대한 고려 없이 혼란스럽고 산만한 상태입니다. 서울 땅은 옛 한양부터 배산임수를 염두에 두고 계획되었죠. 한강이 굽이쳐 들어오고 인왕산, 북악산, 북한산 등 산이 뻗어 있는 형상은 서울이 가진 특징입니다. 땅의 생김새를 바탕으로 어떻게 복원하여 되찾을 것인지 고민을 많이 했습니다.”
산의 녹지와 계곡물, 강과 샛강, 그 사이의 습지, 수변공간과 함께 계절에 따라 다르게 흐르는 바람길을 적절히 활용하는 더욱 쾌적하고 건강한 도시. 새로운 첨단기술과 데이터를 체계적으로 활용하여 이동, 에너지, 시간의 측면에서 효율적이며 건강한 환경을 제공하는 친환경 고밀도 도시. 이것이 메가시티 서울의 청사진이다.
미래를 향한 움직임을 엿볼 수 있는 첫 발걸음으로 지난 5월 <하늘소>가 모습을 드러냈다.
“During the Joseon Dynasty [1392-1910], buildings with multiple floors were forbidden,” he explained. “Because single-story structures don’t meet the modern city’s need for efficiency, there are few traces of older buildings from this period left today. As a result of major historical events such as the Japanese occupation, the Korean War and rapid industrialization, the focus has largely been on constructing roads and tall buildings, so our city grew chaotic and distracting, with little consideration for pockets of nature or for context. Many centuries ago, when Seoul was called by the name Hanyang, the city was planned with geomantic principles in mind. The shape of the Hangang River winding through the city and the Inwangsan, Bugaksan, and Bukhansan mountains extending around it constitute Seoul’s most defining characteristics. We thought a lot about how to restore and reclaim this city of ours based on the shape of the land itself.”
The biennale organizers envision a healthier, more pleasant city that utilizes the greenery of the mountains; the waters of the valleys; the rivers and streams; and the wetlands and spaces in between, along with seasonal wind pathways. This eco-friendly, high-density city will systematically utilize new technologies and data to provide an efficient and healthy environment in terms of movement, energy and time. These elements comprise the blueprint for the Seoul of the future.

<하늘소>는 지상 12m 높이의 계단을 오르면서 주변 산세와 열린송현 녹지광장을 내려다보며 옛 한양이 산, 강, 바람, 빛 등의 자연적 요소를 어떻게 친환경적으로 계획했는지 한눈에 알 수 있도록 고안된 구조물이다. 산을 배경으로 한 역사성이 있으며, 공공 행사장으로 소개된 적 없는 종로구 송현동 부지에 세워졌다. 도시의 구조와 배경을 이해하는 경험을 하는 동시에 도심 속에서 휴식을 취할 수 있어 더 의미가 깊다. 비엔날레에서 선보이는 전시는 총 5개의 섹션으로 과거와 미래의 도시계획에 관한 실타래를 풀어나간다. 주제에 대한 개념과 담론을 제시하는 주제전과 서울 100년 마스터플랜전, 세계 도시의 사례를 소개하는 게스트시티전, 주제에 대한 체험형 전시 현장프로젝트, 세계 건축 대학 학생들의 논의의 장으로 마련된 글로벌 스튜디오는 전시에 그치지 않고 함께 참여해 고민해나가는 기회가 될 것이다. 조병수는 자연성을 회복하는 것이 서울이 추구해야 할 중요한 가치라고 말한다.
“한국은 주로 산으로 이루어져 있고 북쪽을 제외한 동, 서, 남은 바다로 에워싸인 자연적 특성을 지녔습니다. 이번 비엔날레에선 자연의 장점을 그대로 살린 옛 서울의 모습을 닮은 미래를 그려볼 수 있을 것입니다. 특히 한강을 덮어 연결하는 녹색 네트워크 테마를 눈여겨보세요. 건축물 사이를 녹색공원처럼 조성한 브리지로 연결하는 아이디어가 실현된 국내외 사례를 통해 미래의 서울을 간접적으로 경험해봐도 좋고요.”
In May, the thematic pavilion Haneulso was unveiled as a first step toward this future. The 12m-high staircase overlooking the surrounding mountains and Songhyeon Green Plaza is designed to give visitors a glimpse of how Hanyang was originally planned in an eco-friendly way around the natural elements of mountains, rivers, wind and light. The Songhyeon-dong neighborhood, meanwhile, is a historic area with a mountainous backdrop that has never hosted such a large-scale public event before, adding an extra layer of significance to the experience by providing views of Seoul’s backdrop as well as relaxing surroundings in the city center.
The biennale traces the threads of past and future urban planning through five sections: the Thematic Exhibition, which presents concepts and discourse on the theme; the Seoul 100-Year Masterplan Exhibition; the Guest Cities Exhibition, which introduces examples of cities around the world; the experiential On-Site Project; and Global Studios, which provides a chance for students from architecture schools around the world to take part in discussion forums. To architect Byoung Soo Cho, restoring the centrality of nature will be important for Seoul going forward. “Korea has distinctive natural characteristics, with lots of mountains and the sea surrounding it in every direction except for the north,” he says. “At this biennale, we’ll be able to envision a future Seoul that resembles the Seoul of the past and aim to hone in on the city’s many natural advantages.”

쇼트폼은 15초에서 최대 10분을 넘기지 않는 짧은 영상으로 제작된 콘텐츠를 말한다. 대표적 쇼트폼 플랫폼인 틱톡을 통해 저변이 넓혀졌고, 유튜브와 인스타그램도 각각 쇼트폼 서비스를 내놓으며 이 흐름을 대세로 만들었다. 사실 초창기만 해도 쇼트폼이란 레거시 미디어들이 통상적으로 만들어왔던 1시간 혹은 그 이상 분량의 콘텐츠들과 비교해 짧은 분량의 콘텐츠를 지칭하던 개념이었다. 회당 10분에서 15분가량의 웹드라마가 대표적인 예다. 2010년에 만들어진 <할 수 있는 자가 구하라>가 초창기 웹드라마의 포문을 열었고, LTE 서비스가 본격화하면서 인터넷 환경이 달라진 2013년부터는 <방과 후 복불복>처럼 중국에서도 큰 성공을 거둔 웹드라마가 등장했다. 그리고 2017년 <연애플레이리스트>, 2018년 <에이틴> 같은 학원물 웹드라마는 공전의 히트를 기록하며 쇼트폼에 대한 인식을 바꿔놓았다.
쇼트폼의 등장은 인터넷과 모바일 시대가 불러온 필연적인 현상이라는 점에서 레거시 미디어에 위기의식을 불러일으켰다. 즉 뉴미디어가 요구하는 형식이란 레거시 미디어의 형식을 낡게 만들어버리기 때문이다. 그리고 그건 형식만의 문제가 아니라 내용까지도 변화를 요구하는 문제였다.
Typically, online short-form video content ranges from 15 seconds to 10 minutes in length. These quick videos really took off with the launch of the mobile video platform TikTok. Once YouTube and Instagram rolled out their own short-form services, this trend turned into a tidal wave. Initially, the term “short-form video” was used in contrast to productions by legacy media like television networks. Generally, an episode of a TV drama in Korea runs for an hour or more, but web dramas only last 10 to 15 minutes per episode. The popularity of short-form video caused a panic of sorts among legacy media as it left their programs looking antiquated. And it was not just an issue of length; it called for changes in content as well. For example, a “mass migration of comedy” dramatically illustrated this change in Korea, including the 2020 cancellation of Gag Concert, a sketch comedy show on public broadcaster KBS that was once synonymous with comedy in Korea, and the rapid rise of Psick University, which was created by comedians who moved to YouTube. Of course, those within legacy media have attempted to follow this trend, and it didn’t take long for former KBS network TV producer Na Yeong-seok to catch on.

이 변화를 극적으로 보여주는 건 ‘코미디의 대이동’이다. 한때 코미디의 대명사처럼 여겨졌던 <개그콘서트>의 폐지와, 유튜브로 대거 이동한 개그맨들이 만든 피식대학 같은 채널의 급부상이 대표적인 사례다. 본래 <개그콘서트>의 형식 또한 10분 내외의 콩트 코미디라는 점에서 쇼트폼이었지만, 레거시 미디어이자 공영방송인 KBS에서는 소재나 표현의 제약이 분명했다. 하지만 유튜브로 옮겨간 개그맨들은 진정한 의미의 쇼트폼 콘텐츠를 자유롭게 만들어내면서 웹 예능의 시대를 열었다. 물론 레거시 미디어들도 이 변화에 대응하기 위해 노력했다. 트렌드 변화를 일찍이 감지한 나영석 PD는 2015년 <신서유기>를 네이버TV를 통해 선공개했고, 이후에도 스핀오프로서의 쇼트폼 웹 예능을 시도했다. 그는 최근 CJ ENM을 떠나 에그이즈커밍이라는 스튜디오로 옮겼고 그곳에서 채널 십오야라는 유튜브 플랫폼을 통해 쇼트폼은 물론이고 라이브 방송까지 시도하고 있다. 레거시 미디어들도 자체 채널을 만들어 쇼트폼 콘텐츠를 제작하기 시작했는데, SBS의 모비딕, JTBC의 룰루랄라 같은 채널들이 그것이다. 초창기 쇼트폼의 등장은 형식과 내용 등, 모든 면에서 파격적이라 여러모로 레거시 미디어와 비교됐던 게 사실이다. 그래서 레거시 미디어의 전통적 장르인 드라마와 예능에 대응하는 웹드라마, 웹 예능이 주로 쇼트폼 콘텐츠로 언급된 면이 있다. 하지만 현재 틱톡, 유튜브 쇼츠, 인스타그램 릴스 같은 플랫폼을 통해 제공되는 쇼트폼이라고 하면, 굳이 레거시 미디어 콘텐츠와의 비교가 아닌 독립적인 콘텐츠 형식으로 받아들여진다. 누구나 쉽게 찍어 편집할 수 있고, 바로 올릴 수 있으며, 그 반응을 확인할 수 있다.

Short-form video was a creatively destructive force in its early days, and it drew comparisons to legacy media in many respects. Not surprisingly, web dramas and web variety shows, created in response to the traditional legacy genres of dramas and variety shows, have been the productions that have carried short-form video. However, the short-form content produced through platforms such as TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels is now accepted as having its own unique format rather than being a mere offshoot of legacy media content. Anyone can easily shoot, edit and upload a video and then immediately see how it’s received.
The short-form video platform TikTok launched in China in 2016 under the name Douyin and quickly spread across the world. TikTok — a platform on which anyone can shoot and upload videos ranging from 15 to 60 seconds — has enjoyed immense popularity. The surprising influence of TikTok can be seen through dance challenges that have caught on with celebrities and regular people alike, including challenges related to Zico’s Any Song and the NewJeans songs Attention and Super Shy, and these challenges have clearly played a significant role in the global growth of K-pop. Since their initial release in 2020, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels have managed to draw in countless users in a short period of time. Meanwhile, Korean companies such as Naver, Kakao and Nexon have all launched their own short-form platform services.

2016년 중국에서 서비스를 시작해 전 세계로 퍼져나간 쇼트폼 플랫폼 틱톡은 15초에서 60초 길이의 짧은 동영상을 누구나 쉽게 촬영해 올릴 수 있다는 점에서 폭발적 인기를 끌었다. 우리에게도 익숙한 지코의 ‘아무노래’ 챌린지부터 시작해 뉴진스의 ‘어텐션’, ‘슈퍼 샤이’까지 갖가지 챌린지가 셀럽부터 일반인에게로까지 번져나가는, 쇼트폼의 놀라운 영향력을 보여주고 있다. 그래서 최근 K-팝의 글로벌 성장에 틱톡 챌린지의 지분이 상당하다는 건 공공연한 이야기가 됐다. 2020년 쇼트폼에 뛰어든 유튜브 쇼츠와 인스타그램 릴스는 각각 기존 콘텐츠들과 시너지를 내며 단기간에 이용자를 끌어모으고 있다. 최근에는 이들 글로벌 빅테크 기업의 쇼트폼 플랫폼 서비스 대열에 네이버, 카카오, 넥슨 같은 국내 기업들도 뛰어들고 있다. 이처럼 빅테크 기업부터 포털업체, 게임업체, 나아가 언론사나 홈쇼핑업체, 웹소설, 심지어 관공서에 이르기까지 이제 쇼트폼 서비스는 어디서나 등장하는 시대의 흐름으로 자리 잡았다. 영상 콘텐츠가 그저 방송의 영역으로만 여겨지던 시대에서 이제는 어디서나 활용 가능한 것으로 바뀌었고, 쇼트폼은 제작자에게도 또 이용자에게도 그 진입장벽을 낮춰놓았다. 기업은 마케팅에, 언론사는 뉴스에 쇼트폼을 활용하는 등 이제 쇼트폼 콘텐츠는 국내는 물론이고 해외에서도 전방위적으로 활용되는 주류 콘텐츠로 자리 잡았다. 디즈니, NBC유니버설, 소니픽처스, 알리바바 등이 투자해 화제가 됐던 퀴비(Quibi)는 영상을 짧은 분량의 클립으로 나눠 매일 공개하는 플랫폼으로 오픈 당시엔 쇼트폼에 대한 관심을 입증하며 큰 화제를 모았다. 쇼트폼 기반의 캠페인은 광고와 마케팅에도 변화를 가져와 루이비통이나 구찌 같은 명품 브랜드들도 틱톡을 활용한 챌린지로 엄청난 관심을 불러일으켰다. 쇼트폼 형식은 뉴스 보도에도 영향을 미쳤는데, CNN이 Fast 서비스 플랫폼을 통해 제공하는 CNN Fast가 단적인 사례다. 이 서비스는 뉴스, 엔터테인먼트, 스포츠, 환경문제 등에 대한 뉴스 콘텐츠들을 제공한다.
쇼트폼은 이제 방송 영역만이 아닌 산업 전반에서 활용되는 콘텐츠 형식이 됐다. 주력 미디어가 인터넷과 모바일로 옮겨가면서 콘텐츠에 대한 전통적인 개념(방송)을 벗어나 일상 속으로 들어오게 된 것이다. 하지만 그렇다고 롱폼의 형식을 가진 전통적인 예술, 콘텐츠들의 효용가치가 사라지는 건 아니다. 어쩌면 쇼트폼의 즉각적인 자극 속에서 롱폼이 가진 가치는 더 소중해질 수 있지 않을까.

Short-form video is no longer the exclusive domain of broadcasters and has grown into a widely used content format across many industries. As the mainstream media shifts toward the Internet and mobile platforms, content has broken free from traditional broadcasting concepts and become part of our daily lives. However, this is not necessarily a death knell for traditional long-form content. Alongside short-form video content, which offers up instant gratification, perhaps long-form content will grow to become even more valuable than it is at the present moment.

One Day Off is a light-hearted travelogue about Korean teacher Park Ha-kyung (Lee Na-young), who takes day trips on Saturdays when she needs to escape from the drudgery of her daily routine. On these journeys, she follows her heart — and her own two feet — wherever they may take her. She doesn’t demand much from her travels: just a place to walk, eat and let her mind wander. Park’s day trips string together unexpected moments and serendipitous encounters that bring relaxation, consolation and meaningful connections. Just as our own lives can’t be pigeonholed into a single genre, every episode of One Day Off draws in viewers with interesting elements borrowed from a variety of genres including drama, romance, human interest, comedy and fantasy. Since each of the show’s eight episodes are self-contained stories running for around 20-30 minutes, they don’t require a big time investment. In addition, Park’s improvisational approach to traveling uncovers the unique charms of such diverse destinations as Ttangkkeut Village in Haenam-gun County in South Jeollanam-do Province, Busan and Jeju Island. Viewers may feel they’re actually on the road with Park, drawing them even deeper into the story.

Shows in the “History’s Greatest” line of programs present a range of historical figures, incidents and artifacts from a novel perspective that turns the typical approach to documentaries on its head. History’s Greatest Heists with Pierce Brosnan takes a deep dive into some of the most elaborate heists of all time, from the Wilcox train robbery in 1899 to the Great Brink’s Robbery in Boston in 1950. Brosnan’s narration is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

지난 6월, 앨범 <5-STAR>로 돌아온 그룹 스트레이 키즈가 무서운 저력을 이어가고 있다. 발매 하루 만에 200만 장 이상 판매되며 오프라인 앨범 소매점 판매량 누적 집계인 리테일 앨범차트에서 1위를 차지한 데 이어, 발매 첫 주에 ‘빌보드 200’ 차트에서 24만 9500여 장의 앨범 판매량으로 정상에 올랐다. 이후 8월 초까지 8주 연속 ‘빌보드 200’에 이름을 올리고 있다.
<5-STAR>는 2021년 정규 2집 <NOEASY> 이후 약 2년 만에 한국에서 선보인 정규앨범이다. 타이틀곡 ‘특’은 ‘특이한 애 중에 가장 별나고, 특별한 애 중 가장 빛나는 스트레이 키즈’라는 의미를 담아 그룹의 개성을 독특하고 유쾌하게 표현했다. ‘특’을 포함해 수록된 12곡은 힙합, 일렉트로닉, 록, 팝, R&B 등 다양한 변주 속에서 멤버들의 이야기를 펼쳤다. 특히 ‘TOPLINE’은 한국 힙합의 전설 타이거 JK와 함께 호흡을 맞춰 완성했다.
스트레이 키즈는 9월 일본 반테린 돔 나고야와 교세라 돔 오사카, 10월 도쿄 돔에서 단독콘서트를 열고 <5-STAR>의 수록곡 ‘Super Bowl’의 일본어 버전을 포함한 5개 트랙이 실린 일본 EP 앨범을 발표한다. 또 9월 23일 미국 뉴욕 센트럴파크에서 개최되는 2023 글로벌 시티즌 페스티벌에 출격하는 등 K-팝 보이 그룹으로서 활발한 해외 활동을 펼칠 예정이다.
Returning with the album 5-Star in June, Stray Kids have continued to demonstrate their superstar status. After selling more than 2 million copies on its first day of release in Korea and reaching No. 1 on the Retail Album Chart, which measures the total offline album sales at retail stores in the country, the album then topped the Billboard 200 with 249,500 album sales in its first week of U.S. sales. As of early August, it has remained on the Billboard 200 chart for eight consecutive weeks.
5-Star is their third full-length album, following on the heels of the 2021 Korean release NOEASY. The lead single, S-Class, expresses the group’s cheerful personality, suggesting that the members are eccentric and unique. The 12 songs on the album tell the members’ stories through a variety of styles, including hip-hop, electronic dance music, rock, pop, R&B and more. The song TOPLINE was created in collaboration with Korean hip-hop legend Tiger JK. In September, the boy band will release a new Japanese language EP that will feature a total of five songs, including Super Bowl (from 5-Star). Stray Kids will hold solo concerts in Nagoya’s Vantelin Dome and Osaka’s Kyocera Dome in September and the Tokyo Dome in October. They’re also slated to perform at the 2023 Global Citizen Festival on the Great Lawn of New York City’s Central Park, on September 23.

The third EP from aespa, MY WORLD, set a new record among K-pop girl groups for most albums sold on the day of release, according to the website Hanteo Chart which tracks K-pop album sales. MY WORLD, featuring six tracks including the song Welcome To MY World, is a portrayal of aespa — a group with a narrative metaverse — stepping out of the virtual world and into the real world.

After he received acclaim last year for his album HEROES & VILLAINS, Metro Boomin was entrusted with the role of executive producer for the Spider-Man: Across the Universe (2023) soundtrack. Metro Boomin uses his incredible music production prowess to contribute to the vividness of the animated superhero movie with his signature minimal yet sensory beats. The music producer even made a cameo appearance in the film.

With the new EP, THE WORLD EP.2: OUTLAW, boy group ATEEZ debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, an impressive feat that was their highest charting entry yet. The album also landed on other Billboard charts including World Albums and Top Album Sales. ATEEZ was assembled by KQ Entertainment and consists of eight members, some of whom battled it out on a music-themed reality show before becoming K-pop stars.

지난 6월 8일 진행된 ‘2023년 글로벌고객만족도(GCSI) 우수 기업’ 시상식에서 대한항공이 항공여객운송서비스 부문 1위를 차지하며 19년 연속 1위 자리를 지켰다. 글로벌경영협회에서 주관하는 시상식은 고객들의 품질 만족도, 글로벌 역량 및 고객 충성도 등을 평가해 매년 부문별 최우수 기업을 선정한다. 대한항공은 지난 2005년부터 차별화된 서비스, 차세대 친환경 항공기 도입 등 고객서비스 제고를 위해 다양한 노력을 하고 있다. 최근에는 해외여행 리오프닝 시기에 맞춰 새로운 한식 메뉴뿐만 아니라 한국식 채식 메뉴로 구성된 기내식을 선보이며 고품격 서비스를 제공 중이다. 또한 2027년까지 30대의 A321네오를 비롯해 2028년까지 보잉 787-9 10대, 보잉 787-10 20대, 보잉 737-8 30대 등 총 90대의 신형기를 도입하며 항공기 현대화에 적극 나설 예정이다. 한편, 대한항공은 지난해 12월 국내 최초로 소비자중심경영(CCM) 인증을 2회 연속 획득했다.
At the 2023 Global Customer Satisfaction Index (GCSI) Awards Ceremony on June 8, Korean Air once again took first place in the Air Passenger Transportation Services category, retaining the top spot for the 19th consecutive year. The annually held GCSI awards, organized by the Global Management Association, recognize the most outstanding companies in various categories by evaluating customer quality satisfaction, global capabilities and customer loyalty.
Since 2005, Korean Air has made numerous efforts to improve its customer service. For instance, it has enhanced its in-flight services and introduced next-generation eco-friendly aircraft. To coincide with the reopening of overseas travel, the airline recently began offering new Korean menu options as well as a Korean-style vegan meal option. The airline is also actively modernizing its fleet by adding 90 new aircraft. It will introduce 30 A321neo by 2027 and 10 Boeing 787-9s, 20 Boeing 787-10s and 30 Boeing 737-8s by 2028.
Last December, Korean Air became the first Korean airline to receive two consecutive consumer-centered management (CCM) certifications from the Korea Fair Trade Commission. Also, in May, the airline was recognized as a 5-Star airline by Skytrax, a globally recognized airline rating firm in the United Kingdom. Moving forward, Korean Air plans to continue strengthening its customer service to firmly establish itself as a leading global airline in the post-COVID-19 era.

대한항공과 델타항공의 태평양 노선 조인트벤처 5주년을 기념한 축하 행사가 열렸다. 광화문 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 열린 이번 행사에는 우기홍 대한항공 사장, 피터 카터 델타항공 대외협력 담당 사장 등 양사 임직원 200여 명이 참석했다.
조인트벤처는 양사가 하나의 회사처럼 운항 스케줄을 최적화하고 공동마케팅과 영업활동을 통해 재무적 성과를 공유하는 최고수준의 협력관계를 말한다.
대한항공과 델타항공은 지난 2018년 5월 태평양 노선 조인트벤처를 맺은 후부터 미주~아시아 운항노선 확대를 시작으로 연결 편 예약·발권 편의성 및 스케줄 증대, 환승 연결시간 단축, 라운지 및 카운터 등 시설 공동 이용, 마일리지 회원 혜택 확대 등 다양한 협력관계를 이어오고 있다. 현재 양사는 매일 인천~미국 간 18편의 항공편을 운항하고 이를 기반으로 미주 290여 개, 아시아 44개국 80여 개 도시를 환승으로 연결 중이다. 양사 항공편을 이용해 인천국제공항에서 환승하는 승객은 하루 2000여 명으로, 이는 5년 만에 40% 이상 증가한 수치다. 우기홍 대한항공 사장은 이 자리에서 “고객에게 더 좋은 경험과 선택권을 제공하기 위해 지속 발전하는 조인트벤처가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다. 대한항공과 델타항공은 더욱 긴밀한 조인트벤처 협력을 통해 고객에게 최상의 경험을 제공할 수 있도록 노력할 예정이다.

Korean Air and Delta Air Lines celebrated the fifth anniversary of their joint venture on trans-Pacific routes. The event, held at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, in Gwanghwamun, was attended by more than 200 employees from both airlines, including Korean Air President Keehong Woo and Peter Carter, Delta’s Executive Vice President - External Affairs. Korean Air and Delta have been working together since May 2018 to expand their number of routes between the Americas and Asia, improve the convenience and scheduling of booking and ticketing for connecting flights, shorten connecting times, share facilities such as lounges and counters, and even expand mileage member benefits. Currently, the two airlines operate 18 peak-day departures between Incheon and the United States, connecting more than 290 destinations in the Americas and 80 locations across 44 Asian countries. More than 2,000 passengers a day now connect at Incheon Airport on both airlines, an increase of over 40% in just five years.
“We look forward to a joint venture that will continue to evolve to provide our customers with better experiences and choices,” said Woo. The airlines will continue to work together to provide the best possible experience for all their customers.

대한항공이 이마트24, 플레이그라운드 브루어리와 협업을 통해 수제 맥주 ‘칼스라거’를 출시했다. 열대 과일 향이 나는 홉으로 만든 칼스라거는 청량감이 풍부해 목 넘김이 부드럽고 발효 시간을 늘려 탄산감을 살렸다. 패키지 디자인에는 푸른 하늘을 날아가는 항공기 이미지로 여행의 설렘을 반영했다.
“The Beer for The Excellent Flight”를 실현하기 위해 ‘2020 대한민국 주류대상’에서 5관왕을 휩쓴 플레이그라운드 브루어리가 칼스라거를 생산한다. 칼스라거는 대한항공 인천국제공항 및 김포국제공항 라운지에서 만날 수 있으며, 기내 서비스로도 제공해 여행 떠나는 즐거움을 한층 배가시킨다.
칼스라거를 일상생활 속에서도 즐길 수 있다. 전국 이마트24 편의점과 모바일앱에서의 단독 판매를 통해서다. 이마트24에서 결제 시 대한항공 앱에 있는 SKYPASS QR코드를 스캔하면 마일리지 적립 혜택을 받을 수 있다. 대한항공은 앞으로도 고객들이 보다 즐거운 일상 속 경험을 할 수 있도록 다양한 제휴 마케팅을 진행할 예정이다.
Korean Air has launched KAL’s Lager in collaboration with emart24 and Playground Brewery. Made from hops with tropical fruit aromas, the enjoyable brew goes down smoothly and has a refreshing amount of carbonation thanks to a long fermentation time. Capturing the excitement of travel, KAL’s Lager comes in a can that features an image of an aircraft soaring in the blue sky. In keeping with the slogan “The Beer for The Excellent Flight,” Korean Air partnered with Playground Brewery (five-time winner at the 2020 Korea Wine & Spirits Awards) to produce its craft brew. The new brew is available at Korean Air’s lounges at both Incheon and Gimpo international airports, and passengers aboard Korean Air flights will be able to enjoy the beer starting from September. As well, KAL’s Lager is being sold exclusively throughout Korea at emart24 convenience stores and on the retailer’s mobile application. After purchasing KAL’s Lager at emart24, customers can earn mileage by scanning the SKYPASS QR code in the Korean Air app. Korean Air will continue rolling out various marketing initiatives to provide more enjoyable daily experiences for its customers.
