The Medicis and Their Secret Chamber
After 500 years of darkness, a hidden chamber has recently been opened to the public in the basement of the Medici Chapels. The art world has been abuzz about this hiding place used by Michelangelo during a dispute with the pope. Groups of up to four people can enter at a time, with all visits arranged by appointment; once inside, they can admire a series of Michelangelo’s charcoal drawings.

Resonating Across Panama — A Celebration of Jazz
The 21st edition of the Panama Jazz Festival (January 15-20) highlights the work of Panamanian-American jazz drummer Billy Cobham. Named one of history’s most influential drummers by Modern Drummer Magazine in 2001, Billy Cobham has released more than 50 albums as a band leader and collaborator. The festival offers a rich cultural and performance program, including concerts by Billy Cobham himself, together with other Latin American jazz artists, as well as a number of improv-heavy jam sessions and even a symposium on Latin American music therapy.

The Sundance Film Festival Celebrates Its 40th Edition
The Sundance Film Festival, the premier independent film festival held each year in Utah, U.S., is celebrating its 40th edition. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan and Korean director Celine Song, among others, are slated to be honored at the Opening Night Gala, a fundraiser held before the festival begins. If you’re planning to attend Sundance (January 18-28), be sure to keep an eye out for world premieres and special celebrations that could mean opportunities to meet some of the artists who have been involved with the festival over the years.

At Quang Phu Cau, a small village some 35km south of Hanoi, locals have been making incense for over 100 years. Hundreds of incense stick “bouquets” with gorgeous colors and patterns are set out to dry in the sun each morning, drawing intrepid tourists and photographers.

1 GREENLAND
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is renowned for its vast tundra and massive glaciers. With two new international airports expected to open there this year — in Nuuk, the capital, and Ilulissat — traveling to Greenland will become easier. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the sun will reach its peak activity, called the solar maximum, between January and October 2024. This means aurora borealis chasers will have a greater chance of seeing the dazzling lights. Runners looking for a truly memorable experience can sign up for the full or half version of the Icefjord Midnight Marathon to run near the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord.

The City of Love is gearing up to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. Athletes will be competing in some 35 venues in Paris and other parts of France, including the Grand Palais, which will reopen partially for fencing and taekwondo events. Major museums in Paris, including the Musée Carnavalet, Musée de la vie Romantique and Victor Hugo museum, will be hosting exhibitions on the theme of “Art and Sport.”

A growing number of travelers are expected to visit the land of Genghis Khan, with the government of Mongolia granting visa-free entry for an additional 34 countries until 2025. Head to the vast Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Mongolia, which includes such sites as the ancient Mongolian capital Kharkhorum. Nearby is Erdenesiin Khuree, where you can learn about ancient Mongolian calligraphy. Those traveling this year can take part in the Digital Nomad Week events or a women-only retreat run by local travel expert Breanna Wilson.

4 BODØ, NORWAY
Bodø, a small coastal town in Northern Norway, is one of this year’s three European Capitals of Culture. Kicking off on February 3, the yearlong celebrations will focus attention on the culture of the Sámi (Northern Norway’s Indigenous people), with such events as the premiere of a Sámi theater trilogy. Other highlights will be a concert in a submerged cave and the European Cabins of Culture, events held in the country’s famous tourist cabins.

5 NIIGATA, JAPAN
Just a two-hour train ride from Tokyo, Niigata Prefecture is a popular winter spot thanks to the dozens of nearby ski resorts and onsen (hot springs). Niigata is also one of Japan’s top rice-producing regions, making it arguably the best place in Japan to learn about sake, according to Japan-based travel writer Rob Goss. Near Niigata Station, Imayo Tsukasa sake brewery offers tastings in English. Inside the station, the Ponshukan complex has 100 or so sake vending machines offering small samples from each of Niigata’s breweries. Meanwhile, art lovers can head to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, an international outdoor art festival taking place in the Japanese countryside. The event will run from July 13 to November 10 and will feature works displayed across several districts in Niigata.

6 AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA
Rwanda is a dream destination for wildlife aficionados. This year marks the 90th anniversary of Akagera National Park, one of Africa’s oldest national parks. A top destination for spotting the Big Five animals — leopards, lions, Cape buffalo, elephants and rhinos, the park has made a remarkable recovery after being damaged during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The country is also one of few places in Africa where you can see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. With only 96 permits available each day in all of Rwanda, securing a spot to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a rare privilege.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has been ramping up efforts to boost tourist arrivals, and the ancient desert valley of AlUla, the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, is at the center of the plan. From wellness festivals to desert runs and art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone. Those visiting this year can catch the AlUla Tour, which will welcome over 100 of the world’s best cyclists for a race that will take place from January 30 to February 3. Other events to look forward to in Saudi Arabia include the Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, in Jeddah, and the World Esports Championship as well as the first-ever Esports World Cup, in Riyadh this summer.

In Santa Fe — the oldest state capital in the U.S. — Native American, Mexican and Spanish cultures coexist. It was a filming site for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), and cinephiles can visit film sets in the area. Among the city’s cultural offerings is The Burning of the Zozobra. Turning 100 in 2024, it’s a festival featuring the burning of the mythic paper monster Old Man Gloom. Here you’ll find theaters, galleries and concert venues, including the lavish Winspear Opera House — which hosts everything from ballet to Broadway shows — and the Dallas Museum of Art, as well as the sleek Nasher Sculpture Center, with a collection of modern masterpieces that spills out into verdant gardens.

Nearby, Trees is arguably Deep Ellum’s most iconic nightspot, with the small concert hall hosting some of the world’s biggest bands over the decades, including Radiohead and Nirvana. This is Texas, of course, so while you’re in town it would be rude not to explore the local BBQ scene. Each Dallasite has their favorite spot, with many swearing by Pecan Lodge or Terry Black’s in Deep Ellum. For a traditional Texan experience, however, head to the Bishop Arts District to get your fingers sticky with some juicy ribs at Lockhart Smokehouse. The Bishop Arts District is a charming micro-neighborhood that can be explored on foot as you work off your BBQ. Check out the quirky gift boutiques and homeware stores, including Autumn Moon Creative, Zsa Zsa’s and All Good Things, before rewarding yourself with a craft cocktail at Paradiso, a 1920s-style cocktail bar arranged around a leafy central courtyard.

Typically, my day starts before 7 a.m. I’m walking the dog, making porridge and preparing to take the kids to school. Then I’m speeding along the streets to the heart of the city on my bike. OK, I’m exaggerating. I find it hard to cycle fast when there’s so much to see: a new bakery here, a bookshop window there, a friend to stop and say hi to. Copenhagen was designed to have a human scale, with no high skyscrapers blocking the light or multiple lanes of traffic — just cobbled streets, wide cycle lanes and brightly colored buildings to admire.

After a morning in my office, I cycle to BaneGaarden to meet a friend who works in the food scene. The sustainable food and cultural venue was created by repurposing old train sheds and a greenhouse from the National History Museum. My friend and I talk about the city’s newest food trend, the elevated cheese roll, which speaks volumes about the Danish approach to life. On the surface, it’s just cheese, butter and bread, but it’s also a complex pursuit for perfection in how each of the elements come together.
코펜하겐 도심의 랜드마크로, 라운드 타워라고도 불리는 룬데토른 타워 근처의 사무실에서 오전을 보낸 뒤에는 자전거를 타고 바네고르덴으로 가서 요식업 분야에서 일하는 친구를 만난다. 지속 가능한 식품과 문화로 가득한 친구의 식당은 국립역사박물관의 오래된 기관고와 온실에 새로운 용도를 불어넣어 만든 곳이다. 우리는 코펜하겐의 최신 음식 트렌드인 고상한 치즈 롤에 대해 이야기를 나눈다. 치즈 롤은 덴마크인의 인생관을 말해주는 듯하다. 겉보기에는 치즈, 버터 그리고 빵으로 이루어진 아주 단순한 음식이지만 자세히 들여다보면 무척 복잡하다. 각각의 요소가 완벽을 추구하는 동시에 서로 잘 어우러지게 만들어야 하기 때문이다.
I think it’s fun how a humble sandwich has become the hottest thing to eat in a city better known for the three-Michelin-star restaurant Noma. Fine dining and humble bakeries coexist quite happily here, but the ideas Noma created 20 years ago around sustainable and local food thread through everything in this city.
Then, I head back to the office for an afternoon of sifting ideas, interviewing and writing. A typical Danish workday runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., allowing us to prioritize our families in the evening as well as do volunteer work or get some exercise.
So what makes Copenhagen a green city? As the World Capital of Architecture 2023, a title awarded for its green city planning and sustainable approach, it's a city built for people, not cars. In Nordhavn, the new Bjarke Ingels Group headquarters hits high sustainability standards, while Opera Park is the city’s newest green oasis.
별것 아닌 샌드위치가 오늘날 코펜하겐에서는 미쉐린 3스타 레스토랑인 노마보다 더 큰 인기를 끈다는 사실이 참 재미있다. 코펜하겐에서는 파인 다이닝과 평범한 빵집이 평화롭게 공존한다. 20년 전 노마의 셰프들이 창조해낸 지속 가능한 로컬 음식에 대한 아이디어는 지금 도시에 속속들이 배어 있다. 오후에는 다시 사무실로 돌아와 아이디어를 구상하고, 인터뷰를 하고, 글을 쓴다. 덴마크의 통상 근무시간은 오전 8시부터 오후 4시까지라서, 저녁에는 가족과 함께하거나 봉사활동과 운동을 할 수 있다. 개를 데리고 오늘의 마지막 산책을 나선 길, 불이 환하게 켜진 요가 스튜디오를 지나치며 내일은 겨울 수영을 즐길까 생각해본다. 집 바로 근처에 있는 항구의 차고 깨끗한 물에 뛰어드는 건 언제나 하루의 멋진 시작이 되어주니까. 하지만 기온이 영하로 내려갔으니, 몸을 사릴 필요가 있을 것 같다. 코펜하겐을 녹색도시로 만드는 요소는 무엇일까? 녹색도시 계획과 지속 가능한 접근 방식으로 2023년 세계 건축 수도로 선정된 코펜하겐은 자동차가 아닌 사람을 위한 도시이자, 건축의 놀이터다. 신도시 노르하운에서는 새로 자리 잡은 비야르케 잉엘스 그룹 본사가 지속가능성의 표준을 높였으며, 코펜하겐 항구 앞에 10월 개장한 오페라 파크는 도시 속 새로운 녹색 오아시스가 됐다.

As well as cycling, recycling is a key watchword. Whether its furniture at design brand Skagerak, where you can buy secondhand items as well as new ones, or via the city’s vintage fashion boutiques and flea markets, secondhand beats new. Robert Langkjær-Bain, Joint Editor at Imagine 5, a nonprofit organization in the city promoting sustainable living, loves the way a low-waste life here is normalized.
“I love that it’s so easy to recycle packaging here — you can take bottles and cans to any supermarket and get a deposit back on them. There are also cafés that operate a reusable cup scheme so you can borrow a takeaway cup and return it,” he explains.
For me, living in a bike-first culture with a clean harbor makes my life incredibly rich. I feel like I'm part of nature, not separate from it. That’s the Danish way.

Sistrum, an immersive light, sound and vibration experience developed over four years, involves lying on a custom-made waterbed with built-in speakers to feel the frequencies transmitted through your body. The wellness experience at the retreat combines this healing water with cutting-edge technology. Go on a Spa Pilgrimage in Budapest In Hungary, thermal baths are considered medicinal and are often prescribed by doctors. There are over 1,300 thermal springs in the country, with 123 of them in Budapest alone. Geothermal water supplies the baths throughout the city with mineral-filled water of varying temperatures. While the Romans were the first to build bathhouses in Budapest, it was the Ottomans who developed them into hammam-style baths, as seen in the city’s current bath architecture. You don’t have to venture far from the city center to enjoy Budapest’s thermal springs. Located at the foot of historic Gellért Hill, in the center of the Buda District and just west of the Danube River, the Rudas Thermal Bath dates back to the 16th century. On weekends, there’s coed bathing all day, with guests required to wear bathing suits. On weekdays, there are often men-only and women-only hours. The facility has a rooftop pool with a view of the Danube, plus a 450-year-old Turkish bath in the basement.

Head to the southeastern end of Gellért Hill and you’ll find the Gellért Thermal Bath, built in the early 20th century. The Art Nouveau building is a beauty to behold. It has a variety of thermal pools, a regular swimming pool and one of the world’s first wave pools. A unique feature of this bath is a salt chamber designed to soothe your lungs and your soul. Located in the Pest District, east of the Danube, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath is one of the largest hot spring spa complexes in Europe. It opened in Budapest’s City Park in 1913. Built in neo-Baroque style, mosaics decorate the interior space, which holds multiple saunas and steam rooms as well as numerous pools of varying temperatures. Outside are a huge swimming pool, a leisure pool and a thermal pool with a variety of features. Széchenyi also offers unique beer baths and Sparty, a laser-lit dance party held at night in the outdoor pools on summer weekends.
겔레르트 힐 남동쪽 끝으로 향하면 20세기 초반 지은 겔레르트 온천을 만난다. 100년 된 아르누보 양식 건물이 아름다움을 뽐내는 이곳은 다양한 온천과 일반 수영장 외에 세계 최초의 파도 풀을 갖췄다. 대부분의 부다페스트 온천과 마찬가지로 사우나와 스팀 룸 여러 개가 들어서 있고, 이곳만의 독특한 공간으로 폐와 영혼을 달래주는 소금방이 있다. 다뉴브강 동쪽, 페스트 지역에 자리한 세체니 온천은 1913년 부다페스트 시티 파크에 문을 연, 유럽에서 가장 큰 스파 단지 중 하나다. 내부를 모자이크로 장식한 신바로크 양식 건물에는 사우나와 스팀 룸 여러 개가 들어서 있고, 다양한 온도의 수영장을 갖췄다. 야외에는 대형 수영장, 레저 풀, 폭포·거품·기포 욕탕 등 각기 다른 특징의 온천 수영장이 자리하고 있다. 독특한 맥주 목욕탕과 더불어 여름철 주말 밤이면 댄스파티가 열리는 것도 재미있다. 부다페스트 대부분의 온천에서 마사지를 예약할 수 있는데, 그중에서도 세체니 온천이 가장 큰 마사지 시설을 보유했다. 온천을 방문하기 전에 미리 팁을 알고 가면 좋다. 부다페스트 온천은 실내외 온탕을 갖췄고, 남녀 탈의실이 따로 구비돼 있다. 대부분 온천에서 개인 물품을 보관하는 작은 탈의실 렌털 서비스를 제공한다. 개인 수영복, 타월 2장(목욕용과 샤워용), 플립플롭을 지참해야 하며, 수영장을 이용한다면 수영모가 필수다. 목욕 가운을 가져가면 편리하다. 샤워 시설을 무료로 이용할 수 있으니 샴푸와 샤워 젤을 지참하자.
From City Hikes to Local Brunches Hot springs aren’t the only way to recharge and relax in Budapest. Gellért Hill is a great place to take a short hike, starting from the Gellért Thermal Bath. Head directly up toward the historic Citadel and Liberty Statue at the top. Tracing the labyrinth of paths up the hill, you’ll be met with extraordinary views of this city on the Danube. Stop at the Garden of Philosophers, a wonderful place to sit and contemplate. If you cross the Liberty Bridge, below Gellért Hill, you’ll come to Central Market Hall. On Sundays, the Szimpla Farmers’ Market is held in this neighborhood. Local vendors offer freshly picked produce, handmade jams and chutneys, traditional pickled foods and cured meats, as well as crafts and art. For a brunch, try a traditional Hungarian sausage sandwich.

Two Sides of the Same Coin
Separated by the Danube River, Buda and Pest (along with Obuda) came together 150 years ago to make the city of Budapest. Buda is the hilly, quieter area containing the castle and most of the hikes. Pest is the flatter part, where you’ll find many attractions, bars and restaurants.

Sound therapy, the use of vibrational techniques to restore the body’s equilibrium, can take on different forms depending on the tools used and is offered by wellness resorts and spas around the world.
At Chiva-Som, Thailand, a meditation expert used Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, along with soothing harp music, to help release mental and emotional blockages. On the shores of Mauritius, the rhythmic sound of brushes touching the rims of ancient copper bowls pervaded the temple-like room at Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa.

During Korea’s cold season, camellias create unique floral vistas — vivid red blossoms nestled among snow-draped trees. On Jeju Island, Jeju Camellia Arboretum is the perfect place to take a stroll between the charming trees and the island’s iconic stone walls. Closer to the Korean Peninsula, Odongdo Island, near the southern city of Yeosu, is densely packed with more than 3,000 camellia trees, which infuse the landscape with red each winter. Jangsado Island, in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, and Busan’s Dongbaek Island, named after the flower, also offer visitors the chance to walk on carpets of fallen red camellia petals.

Whitestone Gallery, a renowned Japanese art institution, has opened its doors in Seoul’s Huam-dong neighborhood. The vibrant city of Busan presents the Sky Capsule as its hottest new travel experience. This charming, colorful mini train gracefully glides along the former Donghae Nambu Line, now the Haeundae Blueline Park. Covering a 2km stretch from Mipo to Cheongsapo at a tranquil pace of 4km per hour, the journey lasts approximately 30 minutes. Elevated 7-10m above the ground, it offers breathtaking views of Dongbaek Island, Gwangandaegyo Bridge and the Oryukdo Islands. The striking red sunsets viewed from these capsules have been trending on social media under the hashtag #BusanSunset.

Gwanghwamun Woldae: A Restored Historical Gem
돌아온 광화문 월대
Gwanghwamun Woldae, an expansive stone-built terrace that served as a ceremonial stage in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, has been restored and reopened to the public. This historical site facilitated interaction between the ruler and his subjects and was used for state ceremonies during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The most striking feature of the restored Woldae is the set of imposing haechi statues flanking its sides. Mythical creatures believed to ward off fires and disasters, haechi symbolically guard important sites such as palaces and temples. These statues have been meticulously placed based on historical records.
광화문 월대가 드디어 복원됐다. 월대는 궁궐이나 건물 앞에 놓인 넓은 기단으로, 조선시대 중요한 국가 행사가 있을 때 왕과 백성이 소통하는 장소로 쓰였다. 복원한 월대의 양옆으로 커다란 해치상이 가장 눈에 띈다. 상상 속 동물인 해치는 예로부터 화재나 재앙을 막는 신수(神獸)로 여겨져 궁궐이나 절 등 중요한 시설에 세워졌다. 본래 광화문 월대 앞 양쪽에 세워져 있었다는 기록을 참고해 복원했다. 보관 중이던 난간석 부재 등을 되살린 난간석과 왕의 길인 어도의 가장 앞부분을 장식하던 동물상(상상 속 상서로운 동물상)도 웅장함을 더한다.

Running south from Baekdusan Mountain, the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range makes a sharp turn at Taebaeksan Mountain. This region is where the city of Taebaek meets the counties of Yeongwol, Jeongseon and Pyeongchang. The jagged peaks here have borne witness to hundreds of millions of years of change, and the remains of the shellfish and coral that once lived in the sea now form layers of limestone. I head out to investigate these rich layers of time.
겨울 산등성이 위로 드러난 나무들의 골격은 가시처럼도, 빗살처럼도 보인다. 첩첩한 봉우리는 수억 년 시간의 증인이다. 바닷속에 살던 조개류와 산호의 껍데기, 골격이 밑바닥에 쌓이고 쌓여 층을 이루고, 지각이 꿈틀거리며 층이 움직이고, 솟아오르기까지. 그 기억을 찾아 백두대간 한복판으로 떠난다.
Cave Carved by a Stream
The journey begins in a small village at the eastern base of Taebaeksan Mountain, at Gumunso, a site where a cave was carved out by the Hwangjicheon Stream, creating a pond some 40,000 years ago. I head to the steep cliffs behind Gumunso with Kim Yong-mo, a guide at Gangwon Paleozoic Geopark, who points out the vertical patterns in the Paleozoic strata of 440 to 500 million years ago. “The limestone layers in the seabed shifted, and they rose to form the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula,” explains Kim. Before Gumunso was designated as a natural monument, locals frequented it for bathing and searched for Paleozoic fossils in the valley. The Taebaek Paleozoic Museum, near Gumunso, displays trilobite fossils and Paleozoic plant fossils. Kim Sang-gu, a cultural guide for the museum and a local resident, enjoys fossil hunting. Tipped off about three fossils left in the valley near the museum, he guides us there. Crouching down, I come across faint traces of life from hundreds of millions of years ago, barely the size of a finger.
물줄기 혹은 용이 뚫은 돌
여정은 태백산 동쪽 기슭의 작은 마을에서 시작한다. 정확히는 한강과 낙동강이 발원하는 골짝 근처, 한 지상 동굴에서다. 4만 년 전, 낙동강의 발원지 황지에서 흘러 내려온 황지천이 암벽을 뚫어 동굴을 빚어냈다. 물줄기는 한겨울에도 얼지 않는다. 구문소의 신비한 지형을 두고 오래전 사람들은 여러 전설을 지어냈다. 그중 하나는 용 이야기다. 물가에 살던 백룡과 청룡이 다투었는데, 석벽을 뚫고 기습한 백룡이 청룡을 이기고 하늘로 승천했다고 한다.
구문소 뒤편, 깎아지른 암벽으로 향한다. 김용모 강원고생대국가지질공원 해설사가 지층의 수직 무늬를 가리킨다. 바로 5억~4억 4000만 년 전의 전기 고생대 지층으로, 건열, 물결흔 같은 흔적과 더불어 ‘고생대의 시계’라 불리는 삼엽충류와 완족류, 두족류 화석을 통해 당시 한반도 지형이 어떻게 생성됐는지를 증언한다. “지각은 끊임없이 움직이죠. 바닷속 석회암층이 조금씩 이동하다가 2000만 년 전, 한반도 동쪽이 솟아오르며 여기까지 밀려 올라온 겁니다.” 김용모 해설사의 설명이다. “문경, 단양에서 영월, 정선, 태백, 삼척, 울진까지 이 석회암층이 이어져 있어요.”
오지의 삶은 아득한 시간을 수시로 뛰어넘었던 듯하다. 구문소가 천연기념물로 지정되기 전, 주민들은 구문소를 드나들며 멱을 감고, 계곡 곳곳에서 고생대 화석을 찾아냈다. 구문소 인근, 태백고생대자연사박물관은 일대에서 발견된 삼엽충 화석과 고생대 식물 화석을 전시한다. 높이 30m까지 자라던 인목이 영원히 새겨놓은 뿌리와 줄기 흔적처럼. “사람들은 주로 멸종된 종에 관심을 갖지만, 반대로 고생대부터 지금껏 살아온 고사리나 은행이 그만큼 대단한 거라고도 볼 수 있어요.”
김상구 문화 관광 해설사가 말한다. 이 지역 출신인 그는 지금도 화석 찾기가 취미라고. 박물관 앞 계곡에 화석 세 점이 남아 있다는 귀띔에 그곳으로 향한다. 김상구 해설사가 돌무더기 사이를 뛰어다니며 삼엽충, 완족류, 두족류 화석을 찾아낸다. 쪼그리고 앉아 돌 옆면을 들여다보니, 수억 년 전 꿈틀대던 생물의 흔적이 겨우 손가락 한두 마디 크기로 희미하게 새겨 있다.

Stories Woven Into Hiking Trails
Baekdudaegan in winter is like a blank canvas — emptiness in what was once a place of vibrant life. Those who visit the foothills of the Baekdudaegan might not realize that it was a storehouse of fossil fuel. Ages ago, coal was formed in this region from the shells of trilobites and brachiopods buried in limestone layers. From the ’60s to the ’80s, the now-silent valleys were inhabited by thousands of people, and the coal they mined was transported across the country. After the coal industry went into decline in the ’90s, mines began to close and people began to leave.
A 30-minute drive from Gumunso brings us to Manhangjae Pass, at an elevation of 1,330m — the highest point in Korea accessible by car. Taebaek City, Jeongseon and Yeongwol come together at this point, and the hiking trail Untan Godo 1330 passes through here. Stretching 173.2km across the mountains of Yeongwol and Jeongseon counties, as well as Taebaek and Samcheok cities, this trail was built on the old logging roads used to transport coal. Climbing the back road of Jeongseon High1 Resort, I reach Hwajeollyeong Pass, the start of Course 5. Walking beyond Hwajeollyeong, I reach the frozen Salamander Pond, formed by subsidence due to coal mining. Legend has it that after miners went to work, their wives would visit this pond. If the pond was calm, it meant the mine was stable and their husbands were safe.

어떤 이야기는 길이 된다
겨울, 백두대간 기슭을 찾은 이는 공백으로부터 이야기를 상상할 것이다. 나무가 품은 새순을, 저 부지에 무성한 수풀이 자라기 전 그곳을 채웠을 마을과 학교를. 사실 석탄의 역사는 수억 년 세월의 연장선에 있다. 석회암층에 삼엽충, 완족류 등의 껍데기가 묻혀 생성된 게 석탄이니 말이다. 고요했던 골짝에는 1960년대부터 1980년대까지 숱한 이가 찾아들었다. 그들은 이곳에서 삶을 일궜고, 그들이 캔 석탄은 전국으로 실려갔다. 1990년대 이후, 광산은 하나둘 문을 닫고, 사람들은 떠나갔다. 2025년까지 태백, 삼척의 광업소 2곳이 폐광하고 나면 전국에 남은 광산은 민영 광산 1곳뿐이다. 구문소에서 30여 분, 산길로 차를 몬다. 해발 1330m, 차량으로 접근할 수 있는 우리나라에서 가장 높은 지점인 만항재에 도착한다. 태백, 정선, 영월이 만항재를 기점으로 서로 맞닿는다. 총 173.2km의 도보 여행길인 ‘운탄고도1330’이 바로 이곳을 지난다.
석탄을 운송하던 임도를 바탕으로 조성한 운탄고도는 단종이 유배된 영월 청령포에서 시작해 정선, 태백, 삼척의 오지 산간을 가로지른다. 정선 하이원리조트 뒷길로 오르면 5길 시작점인 화절령이 나온다. 그 근처에 한때 광산 마을과 학교가 자리했다고. 화절령 너머 숲길을 걷는다. 곧 나무 사이로 얼어붙은 도롱이연못을 만난다. 탄광이 들어서며 지반이 내려앉자 생겨난 연못 중 하나다. 광부가 출근하고 나면, 아내는 연못을 찾았다고 전해진다. 갱도가 내려앉으면 연못도 메워질 것이니, 잔잔한 수면은 남편이 무사하다는 표지였을 터다.

Relationships Across Time
“Miners carry many painful memories. Of all the former miners who have visited this place, only one had fond memories of the mine,” recalls Son Hwa-soon, director of the Samtan Art Mine. Located in the Hambaeksan Mountain valley, near Course 5 of the Untan Godo 1330, Samcheok Tanjwa mine in Jeongam was abandoned in 2001. Ten years later, the cultural entrepreneurs (and married couple) Kim Min-seok and Son Hwa-soon happened upon the site.
“As soon as I saw the two mine shaft towers deep in the mountains, I was awestruck,” says Son.
While preparing for the opening of the cultural complex, the couple uncovered many stories. They learned that Samcheok Tanjwa was one of the top private coal mines in the country, and its founder, Yu Seong-yeon, had implemented welfare policies for miners, an uncommon move at the time.
“I often think of the fateful chain of events that led to the creation of this space,” says Son.
The abandoned mine was reborn as Samtan Art Mine and won the Grand Prize at Korea’s Public Design Awards in 2013. The miners’ shower room now serves as a modern gallery. The boiler room is now an indoor performance hall, and the central air compressor room has become a space containing tribal art. The coal loading station has been preserved. The vertical shaft, elevators and conveyor belts also remain intact, serving today as memorials to the generations of miners who once worked here.

“광부는 아픈 추억이 많은 사람들이에요. 이곳에서 일했던 옛 광부들이 종종 찾아오는데, 탄광에 좋은 추억이 있다는 사람은 딱 한 명뿐이었어요.” 삼탄아트마인 손화순 관장이 회상한다. 우리가 앉아 있는 홀은 과거 삼척탄좌 사무동 꼭대기 층이던 곳이다. 통창 너머, 산자락 위로 볕이 쏟아진다. 운탄고도 5길 인근의 함백산 골짝. 이곳에 숨듯 자리했던 삼척탄좌 정암광업소는 2001년 폐광 후 버려져 있었다. 그로부터 10년 뒤, 문화 사업가 김민석·손화순 부부는 우연히 이곳을 발견했다. “깊은 산속의 수갱 탑 2개를 보자마자 머리가 띵했어요.”
폐광의 역사를 조사하던 중, 부부는 여러 이야기를 알게 됐다. 삼척탄좌가 전국에서 손꼽는 민영 탄광이었다는 것, 삼척탄좌의 유성연 설립자가 당시로는 드물게 탄광 근로자 복지정책을 펼쳤다는 것 등. “이 공간을 만든 인연의 연결고리를 자주 떠올리게 됐죠.” 손화순 관장의 말이다.
폐광 건축물을 재생한 삼탄아트마인은 개관 후 2013년 대한민국 공공디자인 우수사례 대상을 수상했다. 아직도 전체 청사진의 70%가량만이 완성된 상태다. 광부들의 샤워실은 현대 갤러리가 됐다. 보일러실이던 벽돌 건물은 실내 공연장이, 공기 중앙 압축기실은 원시 미술관이 됐고. 석탄을 캐 올리던 조차장은 그대로 보존했다. 지하 600m 깊이의 수직 갱과 승강기, 레일, 광차, 컨베이어까지, 이곳을 스쳐간 이들의 시간을 오래도록 기리듯이.
Stalactites and Celestial Time
The journey to Baengnyong (White Dragon) Cave feels like an adventure from the start. After receiving safety instructions at the visitor center and arming ourselves with a red protective suit, rubber boots, gloves and a helmet with a headlamp, we board a boat at the dock and head toward the cave entrance, beyond the cliff. As we make our way downstream, we encounter plenty of spectacular scenery. I follow the guidance of Choi Jae-hoon, who’s in charge of operating and managing Baengnyong Cave. Running about 1,875m east to west across the base of Baegunsan Mountain, Baengnyong Cave has been kept in its original state, without the installation of tourist infrastructure like staircases.
Its diverse array of stalactites and stalagmites has earned the cave a designation as a natural monument. Choi uses a flashlight to illuminate the many natural formations around us, pointing out a dolphin, turtle, pearl and even a demon’s eye, eliciting laughter each time. After we reach the widest part of the cave, we have a chance to experience absolute darkness. We all sit down, turn off our lights and close our eyes. Upon opening them, we’re in total darkness. In the stillness, I ponder about the beginning
and end of all things.
종유석과 별의 시간
백룡동굴로의 여정은 시작부터 모험 같다. 안내 센터에서 주의 사항을 듣고 빨간 보호복과 고무장화, 장갑, 헬멧으로 무장한 뒤 선착장에서 보트를 타고 절벽 너머 동굴 입구로 향한다. 강물 어딘가에는 천연기념물 어름치가 서식하고, 강을 따라 내려가면 어라연, 청령포처럼 수려한 지형을 만날 것이다. 취재 전, 조언을 구한 영월지오뮤지엄 민경문 관장은 이렇게 말했다. “감입곡류하천인 동강은 신생대에 지형이 솟으며 생겨났어요. 강 양쪽 지형이 대칭적이라 사람이 접근하기 어려워요. 그래서 비경이 많죠.” 험난해서 더 아름다운 곳. 백두대간 오지를 잘 설명하는 표현이라는 생각이 든다.
백룡동굴 운영·관리를 담당하는 평창군청 최재훈 주무관의 안내를 따라 걸음을 내딛는다. 백운산 밑동을 약 1875m 가로지르는 백룡동굴은 자연 상태 그대로 보존한 탐사형 동굴이다. 최 주무관이 웅덩이 안을 가리킨다. 희고 작은 무언가가 움직인다. “아시아동굴옆새우예요. 암흑에 적응해 시력이 퇴화된 대신, 물체를 감지하는 감각기관이 발달했습니다.” 일명 ‘개구멍’에서는 포복을 해야 한다. 오래전부터 인근 주민들은 동굴을 드나들었다. 1976년, 지역 주민 정무룡 씨가 이 구멍을 발견하고 정과 끌로 확장한 뒤로, 비로소 동굴 전 구간이 모습을 드러냈다. 백룡동굴의 ‘룡’도 정무룡 씨 이름에서 딴 것.

Several peaks in this secluded part of the mountain range are ideal for stargazing. Nevertheless, it’s worth visiting the Byulmaro Observatory. Atop Bongnaesan Mountain, it overlooks Yeongwol’s downtown, beyond the Donggang River. The largest public observatory in South Korea, its main telescope is 80cm wide. Visitors joining the observation program can attend a lecture on the constellations and stargaze from the rooftop observatory. As the dome ceiling opens, we cheer. It’s the perfect season for observing the celestial bodies. Gazing into the telescope, we witness the bright gleams of Sirius, Jupiter and Saturn. Though we’re a group of complete strangers, the occasion brings us together as we silently share the joy of discovery.
백룡동굴은 종유석, 석순, 석주, 커튼 등 다양한 동굴 생성물을 한자리에서 볼 수 있어 천연기념물로 지정됐다. 인간의 상상력은 여기에서 의미를 찾아내고 만다. 최재훈 주무관이 여기저기를 랜턴으로 비추며 돌고래, 거북, 진주, 악마의 눈을 일러줄 때마다 웃음이 터진다. 곧 탐사객에게 공개하는 주굴에서 가장 넓은 ‘광장’에 다다른다. 마지막 순서는 절대 어둠 경험하기. 자리에 앉아 불빛을 끄고 눈을 감는다. 눈을 뜨자 완벽한 암흑. 하지만 그 너머에 모든 게 도사린다는 걸 안다. 모든 것이 여기에서 시작했고 이곳에 이르리라는 것도.
하늘과 가까운 백두대간 오지에는 별 보기 좋은 봉우리가 여럿이다. 그럼에도 별마로천문대를 찾을 이유가 있다. 동강 너머, 영월 시내를 굽어보는 봉래산 정상. 국내 최대의 시민 천문대인 이곳은 지름 80cm 주망원경과 보조망원경 4대를 갖췄다. 관측실 돔 천장이 열리자 천체 관측 프로그램 참가자들이 환호성을 뱉는다. 마침 별을 관측하기 좋은 계절이다. 시리우스, 목성, 토성. 수 광년 달려온 빛이 렌즈에 맺힌다. 이 시각, 낯선 이들은 발견의 기쁨을 말없이 공유한다.
Gangwon Paleozoic Geopark
This park consists of 21 geological sites scattered across the counties of Yeongwol, Jeongseon and Pyeongchang, and Taebaek City, totaling
1,900 km2. The area’s karst formations, caves and meandering river landscapes are considered to be among the best in the country. The highlights include Taebaek’s Gumunso pond area, Pyeongchang’s Baengnyong (White Dragon) Cave, Taebaek’s Jangseong Early Paleozoic fossil site, Jeongseon’s Hwaam Cave and Yeongwol’s Gossi Cave.

This trail consists of nine sections. Note that the eighth and ninth sections, located in Samcheok City, still have some disconnected segments. Passing through many Korea Forest Service-administered sections, the trail lacks facilities like restrooms and restaurants. Some representative spots are Moun-dong Mural Village (Course 3), Time Capsule Park (Course 4), Salamander Pond and Manhangjae Pass (Course 5), and the birch forest in Jijirigol Valley (Course 6).

Harvested by hard-working farmers, rice is a fixture of the Korean dinner table. Tables groan under bowls of warm rice, plates of steaming tteok (rice cake), bowls of sweet rice wine and trays of sticky rice-based treats. And Seoul is the best place to see and sample the many permutations of this life-giving grain. Few are aware that rice is cultivated within Seoul city limits. Korea’s capital may not have room for the expansive paddies of the countryside, but there are about 280 hectares of rice under cultivation in the Ogok-dong neighborhood of Gangseo-gu District, not far from Incheon International Airport. That’s where 30 or so farmers work their fields each year, growing rice for the Gyeongbokgung brand. Gyeongbokgung Rice is used as the raw material for the makgeolli (fermented rice wine) of Hangang Brewery, a young makgeolli brand that began in the trendy Seongsu-dong neighborhood. The rice is also distributed to various welfare centers through a donation program that Korean Air has run every year now since 2004.
부지런한 농부가 수확한 쌀은 1년 내내 한국인의 밥상 위 터줏대감처럼 존재한다. 따뜻한 밥으로, 김이 모락모락 올라오는 떡으로, 달콤한 술과 쫀득한 디저트로 식탁을 채운다. 서울은 이런 쌀의 여러 변화를 경험하고 맛볼 수 있는 최적의 여행지다. 서울에서 쌀이 재배된다는 것을 아는 사람은 많지 않다. 한적한 시골의 광활한 논은 아니지만, 공항과 가까운 강서구 오곡동의 약 280만m² 크기 땅이 그곳이다. 30여 명의 농민이 ‘경복궁쌀’이라는 브랜드로 농사를 짓는다. 친환경 약제를 드론으로 뿌리는 항공방제와 제초제 대신 우렁이를 방생하는 우렁이농법 등을 통해 우수한 품질의 쌀을 생산한다. 덕분에 서울시로부터 농산물 우수관리인증까지 받았다. 매년 봄이면 서울 시내 어린이들과 모내기 행사를 여는 이 농가는 서울의 유일한 쌀 재배 지역이다. 경복궁쌀은 성수동에서 시작한 젊은 막걸리 브랜드 한강주조가 빚는 술의 원료로 사용되는 한편, 2004년부터 매년 이어온 대한항공의 쌀 후원 행사를 통해 장애인 센터나 복지관 같은 사회복지시설로 전달되기도 한다. 수확한 쌀은 한국인의 주식인 밥으로 밥상에 오른다. 커피 맛을 좌우하는 것이 원두의 종류인 것처럼, 밥맛을 좌우하는 가장 큰 요인은 쌀의 품종이다. “밥맛의 취향이 중요해지며 쌀도 품종에 따라 골라 먹는 시대가 왔습니다. 대량으로 쌀을 구매해 밥을 지어 먹던 과거와 달리 쌀에도 각자 다른 맛이 난다는 것을 아는 소비자가 많아졌어요.”
Though this grain is a Korean staple, not just any type will do. “As people’s culinary tastes grow more discerning, we’ve entered an era in which people are getting selective about rice varieties,” says Kim Dong-gyu of Dongne Jungmiso (Neighborhood Rice Mill), in Yeongdeungpo-gu District. “In the past, people would buy rice in bulk for their cooking, but more customers are now aware that each kind of rice tastes different.” For discerning customers, Dongne Jungmiso provides a rice subscription service and professional rice curation. Hyundai Ssaljip (Hyundai Rice Shop) at The Hyundai Seoul, a department store in the Yeouido area, features small packages of premium varieties of rice, along with selections blended by a “rice sommelier.”
영등포구에 자리한 동네정미소 김동규 대표의 말이다. 동네정미소는 소포장 쌀을 판매하거나 쌀 정기구독 서비스, 쌀 큐레이션 등을 전문적으로 진행한다. 몇 년 전까지 갓 도정한 쌀이 주인공인 음식도 판매했는데, 현재 식사 메뉴는 리뉴얼 중이다. 을지로의 동수상회는 몸의 양식인 쌀과 마음의 양식인 책을 함께 판매하는 콘셉트의 편집 숍이다. 이곳에서도 단일품종의 토종 쌀을 소량으로 판매한다. 여의도에 위치한 백화점 더현대 서울의 현대쌀집도 프리미엄 소포장 쌀을 판매하는데, 밥 소믈리에가 블렌딩한 쌀도 살 수 있다.

In Korea, thinly sliced rice cakes feature in the traditional New Year’s dish known as tteokguk.얇게 썬 가래떡은 새해를 맞이하며 먹는 전통 음식인 떡국의 주재료다.
Perhaps the best-known of Korea’s traditional rice-based products is tteok (rice cake). While purveyors of these chewy treats can be found all over the country, a particularly large number are clustered in Jongno-gu District, and there’s an interesting reason for that. Following Japan’s annexation of Korea, many of the maids and ladies of the court opened stores in nearby Jongno-gu, where they put to use the tteok-making skills they’d learned in the palace. Those shops ran a brisk business selling palace-style tteok to a steady stream of ordinary Koreans eager to try it. As a result, tteokstores can still be seen in Jongno-gu today. This is also the location of the Tteok Museum, where you can see various kinds of tteok, sample them at the café and make some yourself in the activity zone.
쌀을 이용한 한국 전통 음식 중 대표적인 것은 떡이다. 떡을 만들어 판매하는 떡집은 전국 어디서나 만날 수 있지만, 유난히 종로구에 떡집이 많이 몰린 데에는 특별한 이유가 있다. 일제강점기 때 궁에서 나온 많은 상궁과 나인이 궁중에서 배운 기술로 떡을 빚어 팔기 시작했고, 그들이 자리 잡은 곳이 바로 궁과 가까운 종로였다. 당시 궁중 떡을 맛보려던 서민들이 몰려들었고, 떡집은 크게 호황을 누렸다. 그 덕분에 지금도 종로구 곳곳에서 쉽게 떡집을 볼 수 있다. 떡 문화를 한눈에 보여주는 떡박물관도 와룡동에 자리하고 있는데, 떡의 역사를 알고 다양한 떡을 구경하는 것은 물론 떡 카페에서 맛보거나 체험관에서 만들어볼 수도 있다.
Also of note is the Sindang-dong neighborhood, in Jung-gu District. This was the home of the warehouses that held the rice harvested throughout Gyeonggi-do Province and the shops that sold it. Even now, there’s a row of shops here selling rice and other kinds of grains. Sprinkled in among the rice shops are old rice mills reborn as cafés and bars that draw young customers at all hours of the day and night. There’s something oddly charming about the coexistence of these two disparate types of businesses. There are also numerous tteok stores in Sindang-dong, noteworthy for the steam rising from their display cases.
An application of rice that’s every bit as important as tteok is alcohol. And for a full-fledged experience of rice-based alcohol, you can head to Mapo-gu District. The district is named for Mapo Dock, which was a busy river port through to the Joseon era (1392-1910). Big ferryboats stopped here, generally carrying cargoes of rice, alcohol and firewood. That’s why there were so many breweries in Mapo-gu, and some impressive breweries remain there today.
종로구와 맞닿은 중구 신당동도 특별하다. 과거 이 동네엔 경기도 전역에서 수확한 쌀을 집하하던 창고와 쌀을 판매하던 가게가 모인 싸전 거리가 발달했다. 중앙시장 인근에선 지금도 ‘상회’라는 이름의 간판을 내건 가게들이 대를 이어 쌀과 곡식을 판매한다. 동시에 싸전 거리 사이사이엔 정미소를 개조한 많은 카페와 바에서 젊은 손님들이 밤낮없이 북적인다. 이 이질적인 풍경이 꽤나 오묘하다. 이런 이유로 신당동엔 떡집도 많은데, 곳곳엔 김을 모락모락 피우는 떡이 시간대마다 다른 고명을 입고 진열된다. 떡만큼이나 중요한 쌀의 변주는 술이다. 쌀을 이용한 술을 본격적으로 맛보기 위해 마포구로 향한다. 마포구는 조선시대부터 사용된 나루터인 마포나루에서 유래한 지명이다. 물류 중심지였던 마포나루에는 큰 배들이 주로 쌀, 술, 땔감 따위를 밤낮없이 날랐다. 마포구에 유난히 양조장이 많았고 지금도 굵직한 양조장이 자리한 것은 이런 배경 때문이다.

Together Brewery crafts makgeolli with rice, nuruk (traditional Korean fermentation starter) and water, sans additives, then infuses it with an array of ingredients.같이양조장은 식품첨가물 없이 쌀과 누룩, 물로만 막걸리를 빚은 뒤 다채로운 부재료를 추가한다.
Together Brewery, in the Hapjeong-dong neighborhood, is one of the district’s best-known breweries. “While ordinary makgeolli is made from rice, water and nuruk [a fermentation starter], we’re creating original flavors by adding unusual ingredients such as black tea, star anise, Sichuan pepper and dried chili peppers. Some time ago, a makgeolli we made with mint chocolate went viral on social media,” says Together Brewery CEO Choi Woo-taek. The brewery recently opened a second branch in Hapjeong-dong, which features a bottle shop, a restaurant and an experience zone, making it a popular spot for non-Koreans curious about makgeolli.

합정동에 있는 같이양조장은 마포구의 대표적인 양조장 중 하나다. 강릉단오제 대한민국 전통주 선발대회 대상, 궁중술빚기대회 금상 등 각종 양조 대회에서 수상한 최우택 대표는 젊은 막걸리 신의 다크호스다. “쌀과 물, 누룩으로 만드는 일반적인 막걸리와 달리 민트나 홍차, 유자, 멜론, 팔각, 산초, 건고추 등 독특한 재료를 넣어 개성 있는 맛을 구현합니다. 얼마 전엔 민트초코를 넣어 만든 막걸리가 SNS를 통해 화제에 올라 인기를 얻기도 했어요.” 2020년 서대문구 연희동에서 오픈한 이 양조장은 코로나19 팬데믹 기간이 무색하게 비약적인 성장을 이뤄 최근 합정동에 제2양조장을 오픈했다. 공장이자 보틀 숍, 레스토랑, 체험 공간이 모여 있어 막걸리를 처음 접하는 외국인들에게도 인기다.

It would be amiss to talk about alcohol in Mapo-gu without mentioning Samhae Soju. The distiller, which has a history of over a millennium, has its commercial base in the district’s Gongdeok-dong neighborhood. Some of the distillery’s choicest offerings are the eponymous Samhae Soju (ABV: 45%), with its smooth blend of the rich aromas of grain and nuruk, and Samhae Gwiju (ABV: 71.2%), which has a subtle finish that belies its sky-high alcohol content.
To experience rice’s final metamorphosis, we need to shift our focus back to dessert. The recent global popularity of yakgwa, a deep-fried glutinous rice confection, and juak, a traditional dessert made of glutinous rice powder, is due to solid support from Korea’s Millennials and Zoomers. Rice takes pride of place in these Korean desserts, with their Instagrammable presentation and elastic sweetness that hits the spot for young Koreans. Leading the charge is Golden Piece, in the Hannam-dong neighborhood, which serves up a deluxe reinterpretation of Korea’s traditional treats. Referring to Golden Piece’s yakgwa, the New York Times said that “it can be more difficult to get your hands on these cookies than it is to reserve a table” at one of New York City’s most exclusive restaurants.
In Seoul, rice is reborn in dozens, if not hundreds, of unique dishes, leaving us awestruck. No doubt, the grain is undergoing its next transformation even now, somewhere in the city. It’s up to us to track down and enjoy its newest incarnation.

마포구의 술을 설명할 때 빠질 수 없는 또 하나는 바로 삼해소주다. 1000년이 넘는 역사를 가진 삼해소주의 부흥기였던 조선시대 상업적 본거지가 마포구 공덕동인 데다가, 서울시 무형문화재 삼해소주 보유자 김태상 명인이 작고한 뒤 끊겼던 명맥이 지난해 그의 후배들로 인해 다시 세상에 나왔기 때문이다. 구수한 곡물 향과 누룩 향이 어우러져 부드러움이 느껴지는 45°의 삼해소주, 누룩의 향과 포도 향이 조화로운 50°의 삼해포, 높은 도수가 믿기지 않을 정도로 그윽한 여운이 남는 71.2°의 삼해귀주 등이 대표 술이다. 성산동에 자리한 삼해소주에선 주류를 시음하거나 구입하고 간단한 증류 체험도 할 수 있다. 쌀의 마지막 변화, 디저트를 맛보기 위해 발걸음을 옮긴다. 최근 찹쌀가루를 베이스로 만든 전통 디저트 주악이나 찹쌀 약과가 전 세계적인 인기를 얻는 데는 MZ세대의 전폭적인 지지가 있었다. 약과를 사기 위해 오픈런을 마다하지 않고, 약과와 티케팅이 합쳐진 신조어 ‘약케팅’에 열을 올린다. 그들의 취향에 꼭 맞는 달콤하고 쫀득한 맛과 인스타그래머블한 모양의 K-디저트 역시 쌀이 주인공이다. 용산구 한남동의 골든피스는 한국의 전통 과자를 트렌드에 맞춰 고급스럽고 현대적으로 재해석한다. 전통 약과에 딜이나 초콜릿, 라즈베리 등을 가미한 퓨전 약과를 선보였는데 MZ세대는 물론 셀럽 사이에서도 SNS 인증 숏이 이어지고 있다. 약과의 형태와 컬러를 연상시키는 골든피스 매장에선 쫀득한 식감의 찹쌀 약과와 조청을 입힌 주악이 틴 케이스에 담긴 채 먹음직스럽게 진열돼 있다. 사슴 모양의 귀여운 약과는 보는 재미를 더한다. 아까운 마음을 뒤로하고 한 입 베어 물면 달콤하고 고소하면서도 바삭해 손을 멈추기 힘들다. <뉴욕타임스>는 골든피스를 두고 “이곳의 약과를 구하는 건 뉴욕의 인기 레스토랑에 예약하는 것만큼 힘들다”고 전했다. 쌀의 흔적과 변주를 쫓아 서울을 유랑했다. 하나의 재료에서 수십, 수백 가지 음식이 탄생하는 쌀의 면면은 놀라움을 넘어 경이롭기까지 하다. 지금도 변하고 있을 쌀의 매력을 찾아 서울의 속살을 들여다보자.

With the growth of Korea’s domestic art scene has come a greater presence of Korean art abroad. An increasing number of Korean artworks are now being exhibited across the globe.
국내 아트 신이 성장하는 만큼 해외에서도 한국 미술의 존재감은 확장되고 있다. 진일보하는 흐름 속 한국 작가들의 전시가 주목받으며 열리는 것이 그 방증이다.

It’s often said that art knows no borders. While Korea has sometimes used national identity as a marketing label, for example, with K-pop and K-beauty, using this strategy for fine art doesn’t feel right. These days, many sophisticated Korean artists are showing their work at major galleries around the world. And Seoul is becoming the Asian hub for world-class mega galleries and world-renowned art fairs. So, how did Korean art manage to capture the world’s imagination?
흔히 예술에 국경은 없다고 말한다. K-팝, K-푸드, K-뷰티처럼 국가의 이름을 명찰로 달고 세계인을 사로잡은 문화가 여럿 있지만, 예술을 국위선양의 한 카테고리에 넣는 건 선뜻하지 않은 일이다. 각양각색의 작가들이 국가적 특성에 국한되지 않는 저마다의 작품으로 해외에서 선전하고 있기 때문이다. 작품에서 자연스레 발현되는 국가성은 있지만, 전통성으로 승부하는 맥락을 따르고 있지 않다는 것이다. 세계적인 메가 갤러리가 아시아의 허브로 서울을 선택하고, 세계적 아트페어인 프리즈가 2회째 열리며 빠르게 안착하는 등 한국 아트 신이 전성기를 맞았음은 분명하다. 이것이 불과 한두 해 사이에 이뤄진 일일까?

In the 2000s, many Korean artists started making a global impact, notably, Lee Bul and Haegue Yang. Lee’s self-destructive yet uniquely personal work has been exhibited at world-class art institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, in Paris, and the New Museum, in New York. And in 2012, Lee became the first Asian female artist from outside Japan to have a major retrospective at the Mori Art Museum, in Tokyo. On November 29, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced they had commissioned four Lee sculptures to be installed on the museum’s facade in 2024. Haegue Yang, who has been called a “nomad artist,” is currently based in Germany. Sadong 30, her first solo exhibition, which involved transforming the old abandoned house of her maternal grandmother into an immersive installation, is still considered one of the most notable artistic debuts of its kind. She’s found great acclaim overseas, including appearing during the past year in the German economic magazine Capital’s list of the world’s top 100 living artists. In the 2010s, Korean artworks with a regional flavor — such as Dansaekhwa — became popular with overseas collectors, who understood them to be representative of Korean art as a whole. This boom was driven by the appearance of such works in prestigious forums, such as 2013’s Frieze Masters, a special exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2015 and a permanent exhibition established at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016.
2000년대를 기점으로 해외에서 영향력을 가진 한국 작가들의 출현이 대중의 피부에도 와닿기 시작했다. 그 신호를 알린 대표 작가는 이불과 양혜규. 1980년대부터 조각과 설치미술을 시작한 이불 작가는 한국을 기반으로 활동하다 1990년대 들어 해외의 러브 콜을 무수히 받게 된다. 자기 파괴적이면서 동시에 개인의 고유한 오라를 지난 그의 작품들은 파리 퐁피두센터, 뉴욕 모마와 뉴뮤지엄 등 세계 정상급 미술관에서 전시됐고, 2012년에는 아시아 여성작가 최초로 도쿄 모리미술관에서 대규모 회고전을 갖기도 했다. 지난 11월 29일 메트로폴리탄미술관의 2024년 사업계획 발표에서 이불 작가의 이름이 언급됐는데, 미술관 외관에 설치할 조각작품 4개를 의뢰했다는 내용이다. ‘노매드 작가’라고 불리는 양혜규 역시 독일을 중심으로 활동 중이다. 자신의 외할머니가 살던 오래된 폐가를 설치물 자체로 탈바꿈시킨 전시 <사동 30번지>는 미술계에서 손에 꼽히는 데뷔전이었다. 한국에서는 선명한 등장만을 남긴 채 해외에서 먼저 인정받으며 도리어 내한을 기다려야 하는 작가가 됐다. 독일 경제지 <캐피털>은 지난 20년간 생존 작가 중 100명을 선정해 ‘세계 100대 작가’를 지명해왔는데 지난해에도 양혜규는 우리나라 작가들 중 유일하게 순위에 들었다. 단색화처럼 지역성이 드러나는 작품이 해외 컬렉터에게 각광받으며 우리나라를 대표하는 사조로 읽힌 것 또한 비슷한 시기의 일이다. 2013년 프리즈 마스터, 2015년 베네치아비엔날레 특별전, 2016년 시카고미술관 상설전 등 위상 있는 자리에서 여러 차례 소개되며 붐을 이끌었다. 세계시장에서 한국 미술의 움직임이 어느 정도 갈무리가 가능할 정도였다면 이제는 전방위적으로 뻗어나감을 체감할 수 있다. 바로 지금 세계 곳곳에서 열리는 전시를 통해 이 현상은 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타나고 있다.

New York Celebrates Korean Art
LINEAGES: Korean Art at the Met, which opened last November at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and will run through this October, is a special exhibition tracing the legacy of Korean art. This exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Korea Gallery at the Met, which opened in 1998. LINEAGES reflects the changing status of Korean art over the years, presenting a wide range of historical and contemporary artwork, from 12th-century celadon to futuristic cyborg sculptures.
LINEAGES has four distinct themes: people, lines, places and objects. Under the “people” theme, Joseon portraits are set beside modern paintings, such as Lee Yootae’s A Pair of Figures — Inquiry (one of pair; 1944), Park Soo-keun’s Tree and Two Women (1962) and folk painter Lee Jong-gu’s Earth at Oziri (Oziri People) (1988). The thematic grouping of these potentially mundane historical works makes them interesting for an international audience. Suh Se Ok’s abstract ink painting People (1988), installed at the entrance of the exhibit, encompasses all four exhibition themes. Also included are Lee Bul’s porcelain work Untitled (cyborg pelvis) (2000) and Untitled (cyborg leg) (2000).

뉴욕이 주목하는 한국 예술 세계
작가전이나 주제전이 아닌 말 그대로 한국 미술의 계보를 알 수 있는 장기 기획전도 열리고 있다. 지난 11월 시작해 올해 10월까지 1년간 열리는 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄미술관의 <계보(LINEAGES): 메트의 한국 미술>전이다. 메트로폴리탄미술관은 지난 1998년 한국실을 개관했다. 이번 전시는 한국실 개관 25주년을 기념하는 특별전이기도 하다. “한국”을 주제로 기획전을 여는 것이 벌써 일곱 번째이지만, 그사이 남달라진 한국 미술의 위상을 반영한 듯 12세기와 13세기 청자부터 2000년대 미래형 사이보그 조각까지 역사적 미술품과 현대 미술품을 아우르며 폭넓게 보여준다.
이번 전시는 작품을 “사람, 선, 장소, 사물”이라는 4가지 주제로 나눠 배치했다. “사람” 주제 섹션에는 조선시대 초상화와 이유태의 <인물일대-탐구>(1944년), 박수근의 <나무와 두 여인>(1962년), 민중 화가 이종구의 <국토-오지리에서(오지리 사람들)>(1988년)가 나란히 놓여 있는 식이다. 자칫 따분할 수 있는 역사적 흐름을 주제별로 묶어 외국인은 물론 한국인이 관람하기에도 흥미롭게 풀어낸 것. 전시장 입구부터 서세옥 작가의 1988년 작품인 추상 수묵화 <사람들>을 설치한 것 또한 눈에 띈다. 전시를 위한 4가지 주제를 모두 담은 의미 있는 작품으로 관람객을 환대하는 세심함이 돋보인다. 이불이 도자기로 제작한 <무제(사이보그 골반)>(2000년), <무제(사이보그 다리)>(2000년) 등 미국에서 처음으로 공개되는 작품을 포함해 총 네 번의 로테이션을 거쳐 조금씩 다른 전시를 볼 수 있어 매력적이다.

Another notable exhibition is Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s-1970s, on show at the Guggenheim Museum in New York until January 7. This exhibition was cocurated by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), in Korea, and was successfully held in Seoul this past July. An international collaboration revolving around experimental art from decades past — much of it unfamiliar to the Korean public — is nothing short of unprecedented. The truth is, overseas interest in Korean experimental art has been steadily growing for some time now. People have begun taking note of the avant-garde experiments that sprouted after Korea’s colonial period, military dictatorship and rapid industrialization of the 1960s and ’70s. The young artists who were active then — such as Kim Kulim, Lee Kun-yong and Lee Seung-taek — have become world-renowned artists. And works by artists like Sung Neung Kyung and Lee Kang-so have seen a resurgence of interest in Korea as well.
1월 7일까지 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관에서 열린 <한국 실험미술 1960-70년대>전도 주목받았다. 국립현대미술관과 구겐하임미술관이 공동 기획 및 주최한 전시다. 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 지난 7월 이미 성황리에 전시를 마친 상태로, 양국의 미술관이 협업을 통해 우리나라 대중에게도 생경한 옛날 실험미술을 전시한 것은 획기적인 기획이 아닐 수 없었다. 사실 한국 실험미술에 대한 해외의 관심은 지속적으로 이어지고 있었다. 구겐하임이나 모마 등 해외 유수의 미술관은 이미 한국 실험미술 작품을 소장하고 있으며, 계속해서 소장을 추진하고 있다. 해외에서 1960~1970년대를 주목하는 이유는 우리나라가 지닌 질곡의 역사와 관련이 있다. 하나는 식민지 시대를 지나 독재를 맞닥뜨리고 급격한 산업화를 겪으며 일어난 파장과 그 안에서 싹튼 전위적인 예술 실험이 주의를 끈 결과다. 또 하나는 그 시절 활동했던 청년 작가진인 김구림, 이건용, 이승택 등이 이제는 세계적으로도 명성을 얻었기 때문이다. 덧붙여 우리나라에서도 다시금 주목받고 있는 성능경과 이강소 같은 작가들의 작품들을 만나볼 수 있는 자리여서 뜻깊다.

Two Solo Shows in Berlin
Meanwhile, two artists whose works are frequently characterized by their so-called “Koreanness” are exhibiting their works in some of Berlin’s most prominent exhibition spaces. (Un)Folding Bottari, on view at the Humboldt Forum Asian Art Museum and Ethnographic Museum Gallery until February 19, presents a wide range of work by Kimsooja. Included are the artist’s trademark bottari (bundles). In Korea, bottari were used in times of war, when people could only pack the bare necessities. This familiar object has become a symbol of hardship and suffering. Kimsooja collaborated with Europe’s historic Meissen Porcelain to create bottari shaped like moon jars. Here, themes of home, displacement, migration and arrival merge intriguingly with Korean culture.
베를린의 두 개인전
그런가 하면 ‘한국적’이라는 수식어를 붙이기에 어색함이 없는 두 작가는 베를린의 대표적인 전시 공간에서 작품을 선보이고 있다.
첫 번째 주인공은 김수자. 2월 19일까지 훔볼트포럼 아시아미술관과 민족학박물관갤러리에서 열리는 <(Un)Folding Bottari>는 ‘보따리 펼치기’라는 전시 이름처럼 그의 트레이드마크인 보따리를 중심으로 다양한 작품을 선보인다. 전쟁처럼 급히 떠나야 하는 상황에 가장 필요한 것만 싸서 꾸린 보따리. 우리에게 익숙한 이 물건은 개인적인 고난과 고통이기 이전에 국가적인 상징을 지니고 있다. 작가는 이 보따리를 달항아리와 접목한 작품으로 베를린의 한편을 훤히 밝혔다. 도자기의 나라 한국의 정서를 내포하는 작품을 보여주고 싶었던 작가는 유럽의 유서 깊은 마이센 도자기와 협업해 보따리 오브제 달항아리를 탄생시켰다. 매끈하고 고른 형태가 아닌 보따리처럼 정형화되지 않은 달항아리가 새로움을 전한다. 박물관 밖 남쪽 야외 공간에 놓인 오방색 컨테이너 작품 역시 한국의 내음을 물씬 풍긴다. “고향과 실향”, “이주와 도착”이라는 주제를 한국의 문화와 맛 좋게 섞었다.

Lee Ufan, a leading figure in the aforementioned Dansaekhwa painting movement, has had his work exhibited at Documenta, in Kassell; the Palace of Versailles; and the Guggenheim Museum. The career-spanning exhibit Lee Ufan, on show until April at the Hamburger Bahnhof, in Berlin, includes not just his Dansaekhwa paintings but also sculptures made of stone and steel plates. This retrospective shares the artist’s multilayered work with an international audience.
Korean art continues to make its presence felt as mega galleries are increasingly partnering with Korean artists. White Cube, one of the top galleries in the world, featured artist Lee Jinju at its opening exhibition in Seoul, and Ryu Yaerim, a trendy young artist, recently held a solo exhibition in Berlin in collaboration with the Peres Project. Indeed, there can be little doubt that the future will hold more and more opportunities for Korean artists.
이우환은 서두에 언급했던 단색화 사조의 필두에 있는 작가이며 일본 모노하 운동의 창시자이기도 하다. 카셀도쿠멘타, 베르사유궁전, 구겐하임미술관, 퐁피두센터 메츠 분관 등 세계적인 전시 공간을 두루 섭렵했고, 프랑스 남부 아를에는 이우환미술관이 있을 정도다. 그의 활약은 단색화로만 그치지 않는다. 베를린 함부르거반호프미술관에서 4월까지 열리는 <Lee Ufan>전은 이우환의 지난 50년을 망라하는 회고전이다. 작가의 회화뿐 아니라 돌과 철판을 주재료로 삼은 조각작품까지 한눈에 볼 수 있다. 이우환이라는 작가의 다층적인 면을 해외 관객과 나눌 수 있는 더없이 좋은 기회다. 이런 굵직한 해외 전시 외에도 한국 미술은 세계 구석구석에서 그 존재감을 발하고 있다. 메가 갤러리가 우리나라 작가들과 소속을 맺거나 해외 갤러리를 통해 신진 작가들을 서로 맞바꿔 소개하는 일이 잦아졌기 때문이다. 세계 3대 갤러리인 화이트큐브갤러리는 서울 개관전을 통해 이진주 작가를 발굴했고 뜨거운 신진 작가인 유예림은 페레스 프로젝트를 통해 베를린에서 개인전을 가졌다. 이처럼 앞으로는 더 촘촘한 기회를 통해 해외에서 한국 작가들의 선전이 이어질 것으로 기대된다.

Having recently released Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), legendary auteur Martin Scorsese has a message for those who protest that 206 minutes is too long: “People say it’s three hours, but come on, you can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours.” And it’s true. In the over-the-top (OTT) media era, binge-watching entire TV series is a way of life.
최근 개봉한 <플라워 킬링 문>을 선보인 거장 마틴 스코세이지 감독은 무려 206분에 달하는 이 영화가 너무 길다고 말하는 이들에게 이런 메시지를 보냈다. “사람들은 흔히 3시간짜리 영화라고 말하지만, 5시간 동안 TV 앞에 앉아 영화를 볼 수 있는 사람도 있고 3시간 30분 동안 극장에 앉아 있을 수 있는 사람도 많아요.” 사실이다. OTT 시대로 접어들며 TV 시리즈 몰아보기는 하나의 시청 방식으로 자리 잡았고, 10여 편에 달하는 시리즈를 한자리에서 보는 시청자들도 낯선 풍경이 아니다.

But, of course, conditions are different for Scorsese’s 209-minute-long film The Irishman (2019) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), which were released on Netflix. The Irishman was originally intended for cinema but went to Netflix instead when theaters shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic — and 206 minutes in a theater is different from a similar amount of time spent at home. When watching a movie on demand, you can hit pause; not so in a theater.
Despite this, movies have recently continued to get longer. High-profile directors like Scorsese have been at the forefront. James Cameron is another. After finding long-form success with the 194-minute-long Titanic (1997), Cameron followed up with Avatar 1 and 2, clocking in at 162 and 192 minutes, respectively. Christopher Nolan, having claimed the spotlight with Memento (2000) and establishing himself with the superhero films Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) — not to mention sci-fi entries Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014) — recently hit another home run with his 180-minute-long Oppenheimer (2023).
So why are the masters going long? Because they have the chops to pull it off. Longer films are costly to make, and run the risk of being shown in fewer theaters. This, however, is offset by the fact that famous, established directors have built up credibility and large fanbases. And as they have achieved both popular and artistic success with long-form, younger directors have followed in their footsteps, including Damien Chazelle, the director of La La Land (2016) and the 189-minute-long Babylon (2022).
For viewers, it may feel like movies have suddenly gotten much longer, but they’ve actually gone up and down in length over the years. Ben-Hur (1959) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962) were 212 and 218 minutes long, respectively, and were often shown with intermissions.
하지만 마틴 스코세이지 감독이 넷플릭스를 통해 공개했던 209분짜리 영화 <아이리시맨>과 <플라워 킬링 문>은 사정이 다르다. <아이리시맨>은 극장 개봉을 염두에 둔 작품이었지만, 당시 코로나19로 어려워진 극장 대신 넷플릭스로 공개됐다. 극장의 206분과 집에서의 209분이 같을 수는 없다. OTT로 영화를 보면 때론 멈춰놓고 화장실을 다녀오거나 전화를 받을 수 있지만, 극장에선 불가능하기 때문이다.
하지만 관객의 불편에도 불구하고 최근의 영화는 계속 길어졌다. 180분짜리 <더 울프 오브 월 스트리트>에 이어 <아이리시맨>, <플라워 킬링 문>을 만든 마틴 스코세이지 같은 유명 감독들은 ‘롱폼 영화’ 신드롬을 전면에서 이끌어왔다. 제임스 캐머런도 대표적이다. 그는 194분짜리 영화 <타이타닉>으로 롱폼의 성공을 거둔 후 <아바타> 1편, 2편을 각각 162분, 192분으로 내놓으며 흥행을 거머쥐었다. 크리스토퍼 놀런도 마찬가지다. <메멘토>로 주목받은 후 <배트맨 비긴즈>, <다크나이트 라이즈> 같은 슈퍼히어로물은 물론 <인셉션>, <인터스텔라> 등 SF물에서도 독보적인 역량을 발휘한 그는 최근 180분짜리 <오펜하이머>를 또 한 번 성공시켰다.
거장들이 롱폼에 앞장서게 된 건 그만한 역량이 충분해서다. 긴 영화는 막대한 제작비가 들어가지만, 극장 상영 횟수가 줄어드는 리스크를 가졌다. 제작의 압박이 있을 수밖에 없다. 하지만 거장들은 이름값에 걸맞은 신뢰와 팬덤을 확보하고 있다는 점에서 이런 리스크를 상쇄한다. 유명 감독들이 롱폼으로 대중성과 작품성을 모두 거머쥐는 성취를 이루자, 이 대열에 젊은 감독들도 뛰어들었다. <위플래쉬>, <라라랜드>로 팬덤을 갖게 된 데이미언 셔젤 감독이 내놓은 189분의 <바빌론> 같은 작품이 대표적이다.
영화가 갑자기 길어졌다고 느껴지지만, 사실 영화의 길이는 미디어산업의 변화에 따라 장단을 거듭해왔다. 예를 들어 <벤허>(1959년), <아라비아의 로렌스>(1962년) 같은 작품은 각각 212분, 218분이었다. 이 영화들은 너무 길어 뮤지컬처럼 중간에 인터미션이 있는 상영 방식이 도입되기도 했다. 1930년대부터 1960년대까지 이어지던 할리우드의 황금시대에 제작된 이 영화들은 새로 생겨난 TV라는 매체와 경쟁하기 위해 스펙터클을 강조한 롱폼 블록버스터였다.

Made during Hollywood’s “Golden Age,” the ’30s to the ’60s, these blockbusters emphasized spectacle to compete with television. Entering the ’70s, however, the tide turned — thanks, in part, to the advent of home video. Movies had to be shortened to fit on a standard VHS tape. Then came the digital revolution, and the limitations of analog no longer applied. With the demise of videocassettes, movies could once again go long, and blockbusters are now being produced to counter digital platforms’ offerings and bring audiences back to traditional theaters.
Meanwhile, with movies becoming more ambitious in scale, the series format has become the new norm. Superhero studios like Marvel and DC have released movies that are well over two-and-a-half hours long.
Marvel has released movie after movie featuring the same superheroes, building a universe where they converge and diverge, with the 181-minute-long Avengers: Endgame (2019) being the latest example.
Movie series like The Lord of the Rings and Mission Impossible have gone long-form, too, speaking to the characteristic blockbuster goal of maximizing the theatrical experience. In a world where people are used to watching movies on TV, theaters are amping up the kinds of visual and auditory stimulation that can only be experienced in such a setting.
Ultimately, movie theaters have become an escape from the hectic world we live in. In theaters, we can immerse ourselves in a good story and also isolate ourselves from the world — at least for a while.
그러다 1970년대 들어 롱폼의 흐름이 꺾인 이유는 홈 비디오의 등장과 관련돼 있다. 표준 VHS 테이프에 들어갈 정도의 분량으로 짧게 만들어야 했기 때문이다. 이후 디지털혁명이 일어나면서 아날로그 방식은 더 이상 영화 길이에 아무런 제약이 되지 않았다. 비디오 시장이 사라졌고, 대신 OTT 같은 디지털플랫폼이 부상하면서 영화는 다시 제 길이를 찾아가게 됐다. 마치 1960년대로 돌아간 듯한 상황에서 디지털플랫폼에 맞서 극장이라는 전통적인 공간으로 관객을 끌어모으기 위해 영화의 블록버스터화가 진행된 것이다.
영화의 스케일은 우주로 나갈 정도로 거대해졌고, 길이는 한 편에 다 담을 수 없을 정도로 길어져 시리즈가 당연해졌다. 마블이나 DC 같은 슈퍼히어로물을 내놓는 스튜디오들은 2시간 30분을 훌쩍 넘기는 영화를 선보였다. 마블은 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터들을 담은 작품을 연거푸 내놓으며 그들이 이합집산하는 유니버스를 구축했다. 이처럼 프랜차이즈화된 영화는 마니아층을 겨냥해 점점 길어지는 경향을 보였다. ‘어벤져스’ 시리즈가 대표적인데, 그중 상영 시간이 무려 181분인 <어벤져스: 엔드게임>은 이런 트렌드를 고스란히 반영했다.
‘반지의 제왕’, ‘아바타’, ‘미션 임파서블’ 시리즈 영화가 모두 롱폼을 추구하게 된 건 극장이 주는 체험을 강화하려는 블록버스터의 특징이기도 하다. TV로 영화를 감상하는 현실에서, 극장은 그곳에서만 경험할 수 있는 시청각의 자극을 극대화하기 위해 노력했다. 이런 경향은 코로나19를 겪으면서 더욱 심화했다. OTT가 영화의 관객을 극장이 아닌 안방에 묶어두면서 극장은 관객이 그곳까지 와야 할 이유를 제시할 수밖에 없었다. 늘어난 길이는 그만한 비용을 지불할 가치가 있다고 증명하는 것처럼 보였다.
이것은 블록버스터만의 이야기가 아니다. 롱폼은 영화의 작품성을 결정하는 척도가 되고 있다. 마치 영화가 길어야 스케일과 디테일을 담아낼 정도로 충분하고 작품성도 있다는 뉘앙스다. 실제로 최근 아카데미상 후보작 대부분이 롱폼 경향을 보인다는 점은, 관객에게 길이와 작품성 사이에 상관관계가 존재한다는 걸 암묵적으로 전하는 면이 있다.
그동안 가벼운 쇼트폼을 보며 무척이나 많은 양의 콘텐츠를 접하던 대중은 동시에 정반대의 욕망도 갖게 됐다. 짧게 훑어보는 것이 아닌 깊이 들여다보고 싶은 욕망이다. 무한히 쏟아지는 콘텐츠 속에서 하나를 집어내 파고 들어가는 이른바 ‘디깅 문화’가 갈수록 힘을 발휘하는 건 이런 반작용 때문이다. 결국 지금의 영화관은 정신없이 흘러가는 세상의 탈출구가 됐다. 서사의 맥락 깊숙이 빠져들어도 좋지만, 그저 영화관이라는 공간에 자신을 가둬두고 그 시간을 경험하는 것이 중요한 트렌드가 됐다. 세상으로부터 잠시 자신을 격리할 수 있는 롱폼 영화가 떠오르게 된 결정적인 이유다.

Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story
This high-speed action blockbuster tells the captivating story of Jann Mardenborough, a gamer-turned-professional race car driver. Jann, a teenager consumed by his strong passion for the racing simulation game Gran Turismo, gets an opportunity to attend an academy dedicated to transforming top Gran Turismo players into professional race car drivers. The game is so realistic that it’s not far removed from real car racing.
In the movie, Danny (Orlando Bloom), a Nissan marketer who spearheads the project, recruits Jack (David Harbour), a reclusive yet talented ex-racer to head up the academy. Retired from racing following a tragic accident, Jack trains the armchair gamers hard. He eventually recognizes Jann’s sincerity and becomes his mentor. Jann, overcoming disdain and skepticism due to having learned how to race through video games, secures a spot on a professional racing team. To prove himself, he decides to approach the dangers of racing as if it were just a video game.
Renowned director Neill Blomkamp, who directed District 9 (2009), employs a blend of live-action footage and computer graphics to create exhilarating visual effects. Jann played himself in the movie, adding an authentic touch by performing his own stunts.
그란 투리스모
레이싱게임 ‘덕후’에서 실제 레이서가 된 잔 마든보로의 실화를 바탕으로 한 하이스피드 액션 블록버스터다. 레이싱 시뮬레이션게임, 그란 투리스모에 빠져 지내는 10대 소년 잔은 최고의 그란 투리스모 게이머를 선정해 프로 레이서로 양성하는 아카데미에 선발된다. 이 프로젝트를 기획한 닛산의 마케터 대니(올랜도 블룸)는 괴팍한 재야의 실력자 잭(데이비드 하버)을 수석 엔지니어로 고용한다. 과거 불의의 사고로 레이서를 은퇴한 잭은 ‘방구석 게이머’들을 혹독하게 몰아붙이는데, 결국은 잔의 진심을 인정하고 조력자가 된다. 마침내 프로 레이싱 팀에 합류한 잔. 게이머 출신이라는 이유로 온갖 무시와 냉대를 받게 되지만 그는 레이싱의 위기를 자신의 방식대로, 즉 게임처럼 헤쳐나가기로 결심한다.
그란 투리스모는 조작법만 익혀도 실제 레이싱을 시도할 수 있을 만큼 사실감이 높다고 평가받는 인기 게임이다. 그만큼 영화도 생생한 연출이 돋보인다. <디스트릭트 9>의 감독 닐 블롬캠프는 이번에도 실사와 컴퓨터그래픽을 혼합해 짜릿한 시각효과를 연출한다. 실제 잔 마든보로가 본인 역할의 스턴트 드라이버를 맡았다.

2023 Weverse Con Festival
The 2023 Weverse Con Festival is a comprehensive music and fan-life festival where you can fully experience the current state of contemporary popular music. The two-day festival, which took place on June 10 and 11, was broadcast live on the global fandom life platform, Weverse, captivating fans around the world. The event featured some 20 teams, including artists from HYBE LABELS as well as global artists who joined through Weverse. The lineup of artists — ranging from K-pop legends to rookie teams — generated a buzz for encompassing a wide range of artists from South Korea, the United States and Japan. The first day’s acts were BOYNEXTDOOR, ENHYPEN, fromis_9, LE SSERAFIM and TOMORROW×TOGETHER. These were followed on the second day by acts including BTOB, Dvwn, NewJeans, BAEKHO and ZICO. The festival highlighted the true meaning of unity, showcasing newcomers LE SSERAFIM, who debuted just three years ago, on the same stage as legendary diva Uhm Junghwa, who has been in the business for 32 years. The brilliant live performances were amplified by the equally impressive stage. The eight giant LED screens offered a sense of hyperrealism, showcasing sweat beads on musicians’ faces.

2023 위버스콘 페스티벌은 동시대 대중음악의 현주소를 가장 종합적으로 경험할 수 있는 뮤직 & 팬 라이프 페스티벌이다. 지난 6월 10일과 11일 이틀간 열린 페스티벌은 글로벌 팬덤 라이프 플랫폼 위버스(Weverse)에도 온라인 생중계돼 전 세계 팬들의 큰 관심을 받았다. 하이브 레이블즈 아티스트뿐 아니라 위버스에 입점한 글로벌 아티스트 등 20팀이 참여한 이번 페스티벌은, K-팝 레전드부터 신인 팀, 한·미·일을 아우르는 폭넓은 아티스트 라인업이 주목받았다. 첫째 날에는 보이넥스트도어와 엔하이픈, 프로미스나인, 르세라핌, 투모로우바이투게더가 그리고 둘째 날에는 비투비와 다운, 뉴진스, 백호, 지코 등의 가수가 자리를 빛냈다. 페스티벌에서는 진정한 ‘통합’의 의미가 돋보였다. 3년 차 신인 그룹 르세라핌과 32년 차 전설의 디바 엄정화가 함께 무대에서 합동공연을 펼쳤다. 아티스트의 화려한 라이브와 퍼포먼스를 받쳐주는 무대도 돋보였다. 총 8대의 초대형 LED 화면을 통해 무대 위 아티스트의 땀방울까지 생생하게 비추며 현장감을 더했다.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER
TOMORROW X TOGETHER have returned to the scene with The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, yet another album that effectively captures the group’s youthful spirit. The unique worldview of the young men and their journey as a team has been distilled into their third Korean-language album. The album catches them as they reluctantly accept the reality of growing up, and the pain of this realization is described by the word “freefall” in the album title. Nevertheless, they are now determined to stop being avoidant and to keep moving forward — a commitment that is expressed throughout the 10 songs. One of the two singles, a new wave-style number called Chasing That Feeling, was produced by production duo Rock Mafia, known for their work with artists like Selena Gomez, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber. The delicately unfolding song details the process of shedding the past and waking up from a dream to face reality. This time around, every member of TOMORROW X TOGETHER contributed something to the songs on the album.

청춘 기록을 담은 또 하나의 앨범 <이름의 장: FREEFALL>로 돌아온 투모로우바이투게더가 전 세계 팬들의 마음을 두드렸다. 고유의 세계관과 긴 호흡의 서사를 앨범에 담아 소설처럼 풀어나가는 투모로우바이투게더만의 감성이 정규 3집에도 응축됐다. <이름의 장: FREEFALL>에서는 성장을 유예하고 세상으로부터 도피하던 청춘들이 현실을 직시하기로 결심한 뒤 일어나는 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 현실을 깨닫는 청춘의 고통스러운 과정을 앨범 타이틀 ‘자유낙하(FREEFALL)’에 빗대 표현했다. 그럼에도 소년들은 모든 것을 피하지 않고 계속 나아가겠다는 다짐을 10개의 수록곡으로 승화했다.
타이틀곡 ‘Chasing That Feeling’은 뉴웨이브 장르로 설리나 고메즈, 머라이어 케리, 저스틴 비버 등 글로벌 아티스트와의 작업으로 유명한 프로듀서 록 마피아가 맡았다. 달콤하지만 성장이 없었던 과거를 뒤로하고 꿈에서 깨어나 현실을 마주하는 과정을 섬세한 스토리텔링으로 전달했다. 이번 앨범에는 투모로우바이투게더 멤버 전원이 곡 작업에 참여해 더욱 관심을 모은다. ‘Growing Pain’에는 연준과 태현, 휴닝카이, ‘Dreamer’에는 연준과 수빈, 범규, 휴닝카이, ‘Deep Down’에는 연준, ‘Happily Ever After’에는 태현과 연준이 작사에 참여했다. ‘Blue Spring’에는 범규가 프로듀서로 이름을 올렸고, 다섯 멤버 각자가 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 말과 고마운 마음을 노랫말로 표현했다.

The first thing passengers watch while waiting for takeoff is an in-flight safety video. Korean Air is introducing a new in-flight safety video featuring a virtual human, an airline industry first. This innovative move is part of Korean Air’s strong commitment to safety. Typically, the in-flight safety video features tips on storing baggage, instructions on how to use the seat belt and information on what to do in case of a change in cabin air pressure. Over the years, Korean Air has been trying to make its safety videos more appealing and easier for passengers to understand. In 2019, the airline released an in-flight safety video in collaboration with the K-pop group SuperM to great fanfare. Recently, Korean Air chose Rina, a trendy and confident virtual human, to star in its new in-flight safety video. She will also serve as Korean Air’s newest honorary flight attendant. Set in the Safety Lounge, a virtual space created by Korean Air, Rina walks passengers through each section of the Safety Lounge and provides safety tips with four-member virtual idol group MAVE:, who serve as passengers. The stunning graphics, the enormous scale of the modern lounge and upbeat background music come together to stir up the excitement of traveling.

MEET MAVE:, THE VIRTUAL IDOL GROUP
Metaverse Entertainment’s virtual idol group MAVE:, whose name stands for “Make a New Wave,” aims to create a new wave in the K-pop scene. The story behind the group is that four girls from the future crash-landed on Earth in 2023. After garnering a lot of attention with their first EP album, What’s My Name, MAVE: made an special appearance in a Korean Air in-flight safety video as passengers.

APEX Five-Star Airline Recognition
대한항공, 아펙스 선정 ‘5성 글로벌 항공사’
Korean Air has been awarded the top score of five stars for the seventh consecutive year by the Airline Passenger
Experience Association (APEX), a global airline ratings agency and nonprofit organization based in New York. Passenger
feedback is collected on more than a million flights operated each year by 600 or so airlines, and the ratings are
subject to verification by an external auditing agency. App users can rate such aspects of their flight experience as
seat comfort, on-board service, food and beverages, in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi.
The five-star rating was driven by favorable responses to Korean Air’s differentiated services, including the comfort
offered by the first class Kosmo Suites 2.0 seats, the rich variety of content available on the in-flight entertainment
system, meals prepared with seasonal ingredients and high-quality wines. In recognition of Korean Air’s continued
efforts to improve the quality of its customer service, the airline also recently took the honors in three categories in
USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards 2023 and was certified as a five-star airline by Skytrax, a British airline
review site.

The Switch to Sustainable Fuel
지속가능항공유로 떠나는 여행
Korean Air is expanding its adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of its efforts to promote a sustainable
future. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast that the use of SAF will play a crucial role in
curbing greenhouse gas emissions from aviation and will account for the largest proportion (65%) of carbon emission
reductions in the industry.
Aware of the aviation industry’s need to reduce its carbon footprint and transition to green fuel, Korean Air has taken
the lead in bringing about change. In 2022, Korean Air began using SAF on a regular route (Paris-Incheon), making it the
first Korean airline to do so. In September 2023, Korean Air also introduced its participatory Cargo SAF Program in
Korea, the first Korean company to make such a move.
Endeavoring to reduce carbon emissions through a variety of other channels, Korean Air signed an MOU with Incheon
International Airport Corporation, Airbus and Air Liquide to develop a hydrogen supply and infrastructure for airports
and aviation in Korea. Moving forward, Korean Air remains committed to using SAF and taking steps to curb carbon
emissions for a greener future.

대한항공은 항공산업의 탄소 배출 감축과 친환경 연료로의 전환 필요성에 깊이 공감하며 변화에 앞장섰다. 그 일환으로 2022년, 대한항공은 국내 최초로 파리~인천 구간 정기편 노선에 지속가능항공유를 도입했다.
2022년 9월에는 글로벌 에너지 기업 쉘과 업무협약을 맺고 2026년부터 5년간 아시아 태평양 및 중동 지역 공항에서 지속가능항공유를 우선 공급받을 예정이다. 또한 탄소 배출 저감 활동의 저변을 확대하기 위해
지난해 9월부터 국내 항공화물 부문 최초로 ‘고객 참여형 지속가능항공유 협력 프로그램’을 시작했다. 더불어 LX판토스와 ‘지속가능항공유 프로그램 협력을 위한 업무협약’을 비롯해 인천국제공항공사, 에어버스,
에어리퀴드와 ‘항공업계와 공항의 수소 공급 및 인프라 개발을 위한 업무협약’을 체결하는 등 탄소 배출 감축을 위한 노력을 이어가고 있다.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can be produced from sustainable resources like used cooking oil, household waste and other oils from plants. Compared to traditional aviation fuels, SAF can yield a reduction of up to 80% in carbon emissions.
지속가능항공유는 폐식용유와 생활폐기물, 식물성기름 등 친환경 연료로 만들어졌으며 기존 항공유와 혼합해 사용한다. 원료 수급부터 소비까지 전과정에 걸쳐 탄소 배출량을 기존 항공유 대비 80%까지 줄일 수 있다.
Korean Air recently added high-efficiency aircraft A220-300, B787-9 and B737-8 to its fleet, capable of reducing per-seat emissions by 20-25%. Notably, A220-300 and B787-9 are the aircraft leading the company’s efforts to lower carbon emissions.
대한항공이 최근 도입한 A220-300, B787-9, B737-8은 동급 기종 대비 좌석당 탄소 배출량을 20~25%까지 감축한다. 특히 A220-300과 B787-9가 적극 투입되어 저탄소 비행에 앞장서고 있다.
