Path Across Estonia’s Wetlands
Estonia’s wetlands were formed as early as about 10,000 years ago. About a two-hour drive south of Tallinn, the capital, is Soomaa National Park. In this “land of bogs,” marshes, swamp forests, rivers and floodplain meadows stretch out expansively. Follow the Hüpassaare hiking trail, which extends in a loop for over 4km, into the depths of these primeval wetlands.

The 60th International Art Exhibition is set to unfold from April 20 to November 24. This year’s title and theme, Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, is inspired by the work of the Palermo-based collective Claire Fontaine, who took inspiration from Turin collective Stranieri Ovunque, which fought against racism and xenophobia in the early 2000s. The event will zero in on artists who are foreigners, immigrants, members of the diaspora and refugees. For its 30th anniversary, the Korean Pavilion will hold an exhibit on the current state of Korean art. It will feature Koo Jeong A’s solo exhibition Odorama Cities, about the scents of Korean cities. Korean Air is sponsoring the exhibition Every Island is a Mountain at the Palazzo Malta - Ordine di Malta.
올해로 60회를 맞이하는 베니스 비엔날레 미술전이 4월 20일부터 11월 24일까지 열린다. 이번 주제는 “이방인은 어디에나 있다”로, 팔레르모 기반 예술가 그룹 클레르퐁텐이 2004년부터 시작한 연작에서 따왔다. 2000년대 초 인종차별과 외국인 혐오에 대항한 이탈리아 집단 스트라니에리 오분퀘의 이름에서 유래한 이번 주제를 통해 외국인과 이민자, 디아스포라, 난민 등 국경을 넘나드는 예술가를 집중 조명한다. 한국문화예술위원회에서는 내년에 한국관 건립 30주년을 앞두고 한국미술의 위상을 엿볼 수 있는 전시를 선보인다. 구정아가 대표 작가로 참여하는 <구정아-오도라마 시티>에서는 “한국 향기 여행”을 주제로 국내 도시와 고향에 얽힌 향의 기억을 수집했다. 베니스에 위치한 몰타 기사단 수도원에서는 역대 한국관 참여작가 36명이 참여하는 특별전시 <모든 섬은 산이다>가 열린다. 특히 이번 30주년 특별전시를 위한 작품 및 기자재 운송을 위해 대한항공이 후원해 의미를 더했다.

The international art collective teamLab, which has inspired such celebrities as Will Smith, Kim Kardashian and BTS, recently relocated its Borderless museum to Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills. The large-scale exhibition space features a number of new interactive mixed-media installations, including Bubble Universe and Microcosmoses - Wobbling Light. Visitors can get lost on purpose in this fully immersive art that’s awash with color and invites one to explore different perspectives.

The Pacific Rim Whale Festival (March 16-24), will honor the yearly migration of thousands of gray whales to the Arctic in pursuit of food. The festival is held on Vancouver Island, in the fishing village of Tofino; the town of Ucluelet, noted for its hiking paths; and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The festival, which focuses on whale protection, includes environmentally positive activities like a beach clean-up event and a community eco-market. It’s also possible to go on whale watching excursions during the festival.

Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, filmmakers and cinephiles from all over the world will be heading to the Istanbul Film Festival, Turkiye¨’s first film festival. This year’s event will take place from April 17-28. Together with screenings of local and international films, and the announcement of awards, the festival will feature an annual session devoted to the preservation of an important part of Turkiye¨’s cinema history. This year, a restored version of Atif Yilmaz’s 1987 film Hayallerim, Aşkım ve Sen will be screened. The award-winning fantasy romance film starring Turkish actress Türkan Şoray drew much attention when it came out.

This year marks the 15th edition of the wellness and music event Rabbits Eat Lettuce, in Queensland, Australia. This annual gathering celebrates love and freedom over the Easter weekend (March 28 to April 1) while camping in nature. Held at Cherrabah Resort, which has a lake for kayaking and fishing, attendees can enjoy live music and art workshops. At the festival, no signs with offensive language or memes are allowed, and you must leave the site with all of your waste.

It’s now possible to sample cocktails made by internationally recognized bartenders in South Africa at the Ajabu Cocktail and Spirits Festival, billed as Africa’s first such international festival. The event is taking place in Johannesburg from March 10-13 and Cape Town from March 14-17. The visiting experts include 20 skilled bartenders from some of the world’s most well-known cocktail bars, such as London’s Trailer Happiness and New York’s Milady’s. They’ll team up with peers from hip African bars like Talking to Strangers, in Cape Town, and Nairobi’s Hero. The festival will also feature a tribute to bartender Douglas Ankrah, who passed away in 2021 and whose Cape Town-inspired concoctions have garnered international praise.

Death Valley is America’s driest, hottest and lowest national park, and its landscapes offer striking contrasts — from sand dunes and snowcapped mountains to the salt flats of Badwater Basin. The wildflower season at this park runs from mid-February to mid-April. In some years, when conditions are just right, visitors can catch a “superbloom” — when a sea of wildflowers carpets the desert with the pale purple hues of weakstem mariposa lily and desert five-spot, as well as the yellow shades of desert gold and dandelions. For photographer Jonathan Irish, laying down in the fields and shooting this rare event was an unforgettable experience.

An otherworldly landscape awaits those who venture out to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage site with two active volcanoes: Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano; and Kīlauea, said to be the world’s most active volcano. Visitors trekking to the summit of Kīlauea may go expecting a barren volcanic landscape, but it’s surprisingly lush, and the park has seven ecological zones to explore. At the peak, some 1,200m above sea level, the weather is quite changeable, so it’s a good idea to dress for all conditions — sunny and warm as well as windy, cold and rainy — according to Park Affairs Specialist Jessica Ferracane. Visitor numbers soar when there is an eruption, so try to go during the early morning or later in the evening as the park is open 24 hours a day.

Giant sequoia, the world’s largest trees, are native to the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. To experience the wonder of roaming beneath these giants, visit Sequoia National Park. Explore sequoia groves by foot or drive through Tunnel Log, a fallen log with a 5m wide and 2.5m high opening for that quintessential Instagram shot. Cell service and Wi-Fi are extremely limited at the park, so download the official NPS app for maps and important information. An entrance pass to Sequoia National Park is also valid for the adjacent Kings Canyon National Park.

Once a hidden gem appreciated mainly by locals, rafters and climbers, America’s newest national park spans more than 283km² of land along the New River, one of the oldest rivers on Earth. In the river, which extends for about 85km within the Appalachian Mountains, adventure seekers can try whitewater rafting with licensed outfitters. At the north end of the park is the iconic New River Gorge Bridge. The Bridge Walk here, a guided tour across the catwalk beneath the 923m bridge, is not for the faint of heart.

Utah’s first national park is steeped in the history and culture of the Native Americans and Mormon pioneers who once lived here. Zion Canyon is admired for its rust-red Navajo sandstone. About 24km long and 900m deep in places, the canyon lies at the heart of the park. Popular activities here include hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and canyoneering — exploring a canyon using techniques like hiking, wading and rappelling. From March through to November, and at the end of December, the main road to Zion Canyon is off limits to private vehicles, but free shuttle buses run throughout the park.

Yellowstone was established in 1872 as America’s first national park. Visitors from around the world come to explore the park’s geothermal wonders, including the famous geyser Old Faithful, which shoots steam up to an average height of 40m. The National Park Service even has an app that predicts the next eruption, so you can be sure to catch the spectacular sight. Until late April, most roads are closed to regular vehicles, and access to the park is limited, but guided tours are available. The park also live streams Old Faithful eruptions and captures other activity in the Upper Geyser Basin through its webcams.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, Grand Canyon National Park encompasses the eponymous canyon, a geological wonder shaped over millions of years by the Colorado River. While many visitors enjoy the grand vistas from the top of the rims, those looking for adventure can hike to the bottom or head down on mule trips for a different perspective. The Grand Canyon is considered one of the most pet-friendly national parks, and hikers with furry friends can explore trails above the South Rim as long as the pets are leashed. Located in Grand Canyon Village, the Grand Canyon Kennel accepts dogs and cats for overnight boarding so pet owners can explore below the rims and other parts of the park.

New buildings are being erected around the Phnom Penh Royal Palace, a central landmark in the city from the 19th century.In the last decade, Phnom Penh has undergone a major transformation, with new high-rises reshaping the skyline. Thanks to the city’s youthful population, it’s recently seen a surge in artistic expression as well as a cultural revival. Continually evolving, the tradition-steeped Cambodian capital serves as a muse for artists and curators. Around the city are hidden gems of New Khmer Architecture, the modernist vision of Vann Molyvann, a French-educated architect who reshaped Phnom Penh in the 60’s with his tradition-inspired designs.

The Art Deco-style Central Market is one of Phnom Penh’s landmarks since the 1930s.For early risers, one of the best spots in Phnom Penh is the National Sports Complex — an icon of New Khmer Architecture where people enjoy the cool morning air before sunrise and get their daily exercise in. On a recent morning, a group of people gather for stretching exercises, while others do laps around the track and the most ambitious jog up and down the 28 steps of the Olympic Stadium. Other architectural gems include the Institute of Foreign Languages and the Chaktomuk Conference Hall, which is fan-shaped, like a palm leaf. To discover the current trends in the art scene, head to venues such as Sa Sa Art Projects, The Gallerist, FT Gallery or the Institut Français du Cambodge. Engage in discussions with artists at the tiSamjort collaborative studio or unleash your creativity in a workshop at Nowhere Art Studio. Then make your way to Pichet to shop for art books and contemporary crafts. To see what young creatives are up to, visit F3 (Friends Futures Factory), near the Royal Palace. The nonprofit community center run by Friends-International offers much to experience, including fashion shows, live music, farmer’s markets and shops run by young entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, in the Toul Tom Poung District, south of the city center, there’s more art to be discovered at Java Creative Cafe, which contains a community gallery and a cozy theater. It serves organic coffee and has been running public art programs for over 20 years. Art can also be found all over the city, thanks in part to Murals for Cambodia, an annual street art festival organized by FT Gallery, at Factory Phnom Penh. At the festival, which was founded by Cambodian-based graffiti artist FONKi in 2022, artists from around the world can leave their mark on the city’s walls. Several such works can be seen at FT Gallery. Other spots for street art include Street 93 near the Al-Serkal Mosque and Street 80 near the French Embassy.

The word “sustainability” just keeps popping up. But what does it actually mean? The most widely used definition can be found in “Our Common Future,” a 1987 report issued by the UN Brundtland Commission. The commission describes sustainable development as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
오늘날 어디서든 등장하는 단어, ‘지속가능성’이란 무엇일까? 가장 폭넓게 쓰이는 정의는 1987년 유엔 브룬트란트위원회가 발간한 보고서 <우리 공동의 미래>에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 위원회는 지속 가능한 발전을 “미래세대가 자신의 필요를 충족할 수 있는 능력을 손상하지 않으면서 현재의 필요를 충족하는 것”으로 정의했다.
GLOBAL BOILINGWith global warming and climate change now being referred to as a “climate crisis,” a new term has entered the lexicon. In July of last year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that we have entered an era of “global boiling.” July 2023 was the hottest month on record, and ocean temperatures were higher than ever. Throughout 2023, wildfires raged in many parts of the world amid record heatwaves and temperature highs.
지구온난화와 기후 변화로 이제는 ‘기후 위기’ 상황이 다가왔다. 이에 따라 새로운 용어가 등장했다. 지난해 7월, 안토니우 구테흐스 유엔사무총장은 성명을 통해 이제 지구온난화에서 ‘지구 가열화’ 시대로 넘어갔음을 선언했다. 2023년 7월이 관측 이래 가장 더운 기간이었으며, 해수 온도도 연중 이맘때가 최고 수준이었다는 것. 지금도 세계 곳곳에서는 기록적인 폭염과 최고기온으로 산불이 일어나고 있다. 이는 예전에 과학자들이 예측한 것보다 훨씬 빠른 속도다.
How do we categorize sustainability? Entrepreneur and author John Elkington, widely considered the godfather of the sustainability movement, coined the term “Triple Bottom Line” in 1994 as a wake-up call to profit-driven companies. The triple bottom line is a way of using sustainability to assess a company’s impact on people, the planet and profits. These three measures, or the 3Ps, are frequently cited as the three pillars of sustainability.
지속가능성은 어떻게 분류할 수 있을까? 지속가능성 운동의 대부라 불리는 기업가이자 작가 존 엘킹턴은 이익만 추구하는 기업에게 경각심을 주고자 1994년 ‘TBL(Triple Bottom Line)’이라는 용어를 만들었다. TBL은 기업의 사회적, 환경적, 경제적 영향을 통해 지속가능성을 평가하는 방법이다. ‘3P’라고 불리는 이 3가지 척도는 지속가능성을 구성하는 3대 요소로 인용되고 있다.

Planet Focuses on the protection and conservation of the planet’s resources. Examples include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting endangered species and recycling.
Profit Focuses on generating revenue without depleting resources. A primary example of this is the use of renewable energy.

SDGsFor many of us, the term “sustainability” calls to mind environmental issues, but its scope is actually much broader. The UN has outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals for developed and developing countries to achieve by 2030. These goals range from environmental moves, like taking action on climate change and preserving marine resources, to ensuring peace and prosperity for people and the planet by ending poverty and securing gender equality, steady economic growth and high-quality education for all.
지속가능성이라는 말을 들으면 대부분 환경문제를 떠올리겠지만, 그 범위는 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 넓고 다양하다. 유엔은 2030년까지 선진국과 개발도상국이 달성해야 할 17개의 지속가능발전목표(SDGs)를 정의했다. SDGs는 기후변화에 대비한 행동, 해양자원의 보존 등 환경적인 문제부터 빈곤 종식, 성평등, 꾸준한 경제성장, 수준 높은 교육까지 인류와 지구의 번영 및 평화를 위한 포괄적인 내용을 다루고 있다.
WHALESOne whale, they say, is worth thousands of trees. According to the IMF, protecting whales can help curb greenhouse gases and slow global warming. Great whales accumulate an average of 33 tons of carbon dioxide in their bodies during their lifetime and take it with them to the seafloor when they die. Whales secrete nutrients that feed phytoplankton, which provide more than 50% of atmospheric oxygen.

EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY
Earth Overshoot Day is the date when our demand for the planet’s natural resources exceeds what the Earth produces in any given year. It’s calculated by dividing the annual amount of resources the Earth can produce by the amount of resources present-day humans require, and multiplying it by 365. In 2023, Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 2. It would take 1.7 Earths to provide enough resources for humanity to continue consuming at the rate we do now.

ECO-FRIENDLY CELEBRITIESAt a time when people need to work together to achieve sustainability, celebrities can make a huge impact through sustainable choices. An example is actor Mark Ruffalo, who played the Hulk in the Avengers series (2012-2019). In 2013, Ruffalo cofounded The Solutions Project, a nonprofit organization that advocates for social and political solutions to climate change. Meanwhile, actress Natalie Portman has been a vegan since 2011 and is known for avoiding leather and fur. Last but not least, James Cameron, director of the Avatar films (2009 and 2022), insists on only having plant-based catering on his movie sets.

STATISTICSPlastics have a serious impact on the planet’s soil and oceans. Some 36% of plastic waste comes from containers and packaging like plastic bags and wrap. Many categorize plastic as a recyclable waste, but only 9% of the world’s plastic waste is actually recycled. Also, when it’s time to do the laundry, it’s best to set your washer to cold. Because most of the energy involved is used to heat the water, washing your clothes in cold water can mean saving a whopping 90% in terms of electricity.

NACHHALTIGKEITWho exactly coined the word “sustainability”? German-speaking researchers say the term can be traced back to the 18th century forestry expert Hans Carl von Carlowitz. In a book on forestry published in 1713, Carlowitz argued against over-clearing and used the German words nachhalten, meaning “to keep something for future use,” and nachhaltigkeit (rendered in English as “sustainability”).

Korean Air operates direct Spain’s third-largest city, Valencia is a bustling coastal metropolis on the Spanish Mediterranean, which has always been considered a desirable place to live. Well- known as the birthplace of paella, Spain’s most famous rice dish, the city has dazzling Mediterranean beaches and access to locally-sourced food from La Huerta, a fertile farming region surrounding the city. With a long history dating back to Roman times, the city boasts a rich variety of architectural styles from the Gothic civil architecture of the Silk Exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the avant-garde City of Arts and Sciences building. In more recent years, the city’s commitment to preserve and expand green spaces, transform streets and squares into pedestrian areas (its three main squares have become pedestrian), promote cycling, and audit the carbon and water footprint of tourism activities have elevated the quality of life here and helped the city earn the designation of European Green Capital 2024.
스페인에서 세 번째로 큰 도시인 발렌시아는 오래전부터 살기 좋은 곳으로 손꼽혀왔다. 지리적으로는 눈부신 지중해에 접해 있고, 라우에르타라 불리는 넓고 풍요로운 농지에 둘러싸인 천혜의 자연이 펼쳐진다. 그뿐 아니라 로마시대로 거슬러 올라가는 긴 역사만큼 풍부한 문화도 간직하고 있다. 발렌시아 고딕양식으로 지은 유네스코 세계문화유산 라 롱하 데 라 세다에서부터 도시의 랜드마크로 자리매김한 시티 오브 아츠 앤드 사이언시스의 모던하게 반짝이는 여러 대형 건축물까지, 풍부하고 다채로운 양식의 건축물이 도시에 모여 있다. 스페인을 대표하는 음식 파에야도 바로 이곳에서 탄생했다. 최근 발렌시아는 도시 차원에서 녹지를 보존하고 확장하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 시내 여러 도로와 광장을 보행자 전용 구역으로 전환하고, 레이나 광장, 시청 광장을 비롯한 발렌시아의 주요 광장 3곳도 전부 보행자 전용 구역으로 지정했다. 자전거 이용을 권장하고 관광 활동에서 발생하는 탄소발자국과 물발자국을 감시하며 전반적인 삶의 질이 높아졌다. 이로 인해 발렌시아는 2024년 유럽 녹색 수도로 선정됐다.
As a Valencia local living in Ruzafa, a neighborhood with a distinctly bohemian vibe near the center of the city, I can do everything on foot and there’s no need to own a car. Three days a week, I put on my leggings as soon as I wake up and walk down the street to my pilates class, conveniently located next door to the café with the best smoothies in town, La Más Bonita. On the days when I don’t allow myself the indulgence of a raspberry smoothie, I stop by the local market on the way back home to pick up some meaty Valencian tomatoes, which I put on toast and salads, and oranges to make fresh juice. Valencia’s manageable size is not the only joy of living in the city. On Fridays, especially in summer, it’s not uncommon to finish work around two in the afternoon and start the weekend with a long lunch on a sunny terrace that turns into a tardeo, a novel way of socializing where afternoon drinks melt into the night.
나는 발렌시아 중심부에서 가깝고 보헤미안 분위기가 물씬 풍기는 루사파 지구에 거주한다. 이 동네에서는 어디든 웬만하면 걸어갈 수 있기에 자동차가 필요하지 않다. 그래서 동네를 자주 걸어 다니며 상점 유리창 너머로 책, 디자인 소품, 빈티지 의류, 예술 작품을 구경하곤 한다. 발렌시아는 언제나 새로운 무언가를 마주칠 수 있는 도시다. 루사파에서는 말할 것도 없다. 일주일에 세 번, 아침에 눈을 뜨자마자 운동복으로 갈아입고 필라테스 수업을 들으러 걸어간다. 마침 필라테스 수업을 하는 곳 바로 옆에 루사파에서 가장 맛 좋은 스무디를 판매하는 카페 라 마스 보니타가 자리한다. 나는 자주 이곳에 들러 라즈베리 스무디 한잔의 여유를 누린다. 그렇지 않은 날에는 집으로 가는 길에 동네 시장으로 향한다. 토스트와 샐러드 재료로 쓸, 과육이 꽉 들어찬 발렌시아 토마토와 신선한 주스를 만들 오렌지를 사기 위해서다. 발렌시아의 아담한 크기는 걸어서 돌아다니기 쉽다는 것 외에도 장점이 많다. 나는 전 세계 디지털 노매드들이 모인 코워킹 스페이스에서 근무한다. 금요일, 특히 여름이면 오후 2시경 일을 마친 뒤 햇빛이 쏟아지는 테라스로 나가 여유롭게 점심을 즐긴다. 이 시간은 종종 타르데오로 이어지고는 한다. 타르데오란 최근 스페인에서 유행하는 사교 방법으로, 사람들과 어울려 낮부터 마시는 술이 밤까지 이어지는 것을 말한다.
Sunny Days and Green Ways
With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, Valencian residents and visitors spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. Turia Gardens, a former riverbed that was transformed into a green space in 1986 to prevent flooding, traverses the whole city and provides most residents with access to a green space within 5-10 minutes from home. It’s common to spot joggers and cyclists at the park, and there are dozens of classes on offer, from outdoor yoga to contemporary dance. Valencia also has other public parks, like Central Park and Viveros Garden, adding up to 5 million square meters of green spaces.

연평균 화창한 날이 300일에 달하는 발렌시아에서 현지인과 관광객은 상당한 시간을 야외에서 보내게 된다. 투리아 공원은 화창한 날을 즐기기 좋은 곳이다. 한때 강바닥이었으나 1986년 홍수를 방지하고자 녹지를 조성해 공원으로 다시 태어났다. 덕분에 발렌시아 주민 대부분은 집에서 도보로 5~10분이면 녹지에 접근할 수 있다. 투리아 공원에서는 조깅하거나 자전거를 타는 사람들은 물론, 요가부터 현대무용에 이르기까지 다양한 야외 수업이 열리는 풍경을 흔히 마주치게 된다.
발렌시아에는 투리아 공원뿐 아니라 중앙 공원, 비베로스 공원 같은 공원이 여러 곳에 자리한다. 도시의 녹지 면적을 합치면 총 500만㎡에 달할 정도다.
With its flat terrain, over 200km of bike lanes, and the bike hire service, Valenbisi, Valencia is an incredibly bike-friendly city. Groups of tourists can easily be seen exploring the impressive modern buildings at the City of Arts and Sciences or the seafront promenade on bikes. There are also bike tours to the Albufera Natural Park, located south of the city, and to nearby towns. Valencia is the first city in the world to calculate and certify the carbon footprint of its tourist activity, and a 2019 report found that the total tourist activity accounted for nearly 1.3 million tons of CO2. About 81% of this was linked to transportation methods to arrive in Valencia, but less than 1% was attributed to transportation within the city so cycling certainly must play a part in these numbers.
발렌시아는 자전거 친화적인 도시기도 하다. 도시 대부분이 평지로 이루어진 데다 200km에 달하는 자전거도로가 뻗어 있고, 자전거 대여 시스템인 발렌비시가 활성화되어 있다. 인상적이며 모던한 건축물이 모인 시티 오브 아츠 앤드 사이언시스나 쭉 뻗은 해안 산책로에 가면 자전거로 달리는 관광객을 쉽게 볼 수 있다. 시티 오브 아츠 앤드 사이언시스는 아쿠아리움, 박물관, 공연장, 정원 등이 모여 있어, 이 도시에서 빼놓을 수 없는 명소다. 발렌시아 남쪽에 위치한 알부페라 자연공원이나 인근 마을을 여행하는 자전거 투어도 여럿 있다. 발렌시아는 세계 최초로 관광 활동에서 파생되는 탄소발자국을 계산하고 인증한 도시다. 2019년 보고서에 따르면 전체 관광 활동에서 약 130만 톤에 이르는 이산화탄소가 발생했다. 이 중 81%는 발렌시아로 오는 데 사용한 교통수단과 연관된 것이며, 도시 내 교통수단이 발생시키는 이산화탄소는 1% 미만으로 나타났다. 아마도 자전거가 이 수치에 어느 정도 기여한 것으로 보인다.
Planet-Friendly Dining
Leading the sustainable dining scene in Valencia is local chef Ricard Camarena, who was awarded a Michelin Green Star in 2020. His five restaurants in the city work closely as an ecosystem to eliminate waste. Instead of throwing away byproducts (say, orange peels) at one of his restaurants, he sends them to another and creates a new dessert.
His commitment to fully utilizing products is not the only sustainable practice Camarena follows. “We try to work with people who supply us with products that are in our immediate environment,” Camarena explains. “We work almost exclusively with one producer, and about 90% of what he produces is for us. If there is overproduction of a crop, that product will suddenly have more room on all our restaurant menus.”
When it comes to consuming animal products, the chef also follows ethical practices. “If I had a meat production ecosystem as powerful as that of vegetables, there might be much more presence of meat on the menu. Right now, there's duck because there's a hunter in Albufera who supplies us with ducks,” he explains.

카마레나가 따르는 지속 가능한 실천은 식자재를 최대한 활용하는 것에서 끝나지 않는다. “우리와 가까운 환경에서 식자재를 생산하는 이들과 함께 일하고자 노력합니다.” 카마레나가 말한다. “우리는 가급적 지역 생산자와 독점적 관계를 유지합니다. 때문에 한 업체가 생산한 식자재의 90% 정도는 우리 식당으로 공급됩니다. 가령 한 가지 곡물의 생산량이 갑자기 증가하면, 이 품목이 우리 레스토랑 메뉴에 더 많이 등장하게 되는 셈이지요.”
동물 소비에 있어서도 카마레나는 윤리적 방식을 실천한다. “육류가 생산되는 생태계가 채소만큼 강력했다면, 우리 메뉴에 육류가 더 많이 등장했을 겁니다. 현재는 알부페라의 한 사냥꾼에게서 오리를 공급받기에 오리 요리만 선보이고 있어요.”
Valencia’s Central Market, housed in a grand modernist building from the early 20th century, stands as a landmark in the city. Among one of the largest markets in Europe, with over 1,200 stalls, it offers a diverse and tantalizing array of local produce. To chef Camarena, the Central Market has been his natural pantry from the beginning. He believes that Valencia is privileged due to the proximity to La Huerta, the sea, the mountains and the drylands. “We have a privileged climate and also a privileged position on a global level,” he adds. When asked for advice on how to eat more sustainably, Camarena suggests that “by adapting to the productive cycles of the seasons, you can eat in a much more economical and much more sustainable way.” From enjoying tapas at the Central Market to delightful gastronomic experiences at Michelin-starred restaurants, exploring the flavors of Valencia is just another way of experiencing the city’s sustainable heartbeat.

Las Fallas Festival Valencia’s main cultural festival, Las Fallas (March 1-19), lights up the city every year. Streets and plazas fill up with revelers, firecrackers, and elaborate sculptures that are burned during the celebration’s final night. Following Valencia’s designation as the European Green Capital 2024, this will be the first year that the main monument will be built using sustainable materials.
라스 파야스 축제 3월 1일부터 19일까지, 발렌시아의 주요 문화 축제인 라스 파야스가 도시를 밝힌다. 거리와 광장은 축제를 즐기는 인파, 불꽃놀이와 더불어 축제의 마지막 날인 ‘크레마’에서 불태우게 되는 정교한 조각상들로 꽉 찬다. 크레마는 ‘태우다’라는 뜻의 발렌시아어다. 발렌시아가 2024년 유럽 녹색 수도로 지정되며 올해부터는 주요 기념물을 지속 가능한 재료를 사용해 만들 예정이다.
Holy Week Semana Santa (March 24-31), or Holy Week, is widely celebrated throughout Spain, but Valencia’s proximity to the coast gives its Semana Santa celebrations a distinctly maritime flavor. Head to neighborhoods like Cabanyal, Canyamelar and Grau to see religious processions marching to the beach wearing robes and pointy hats.
성주간 3월 24일부터 31일까지, 세마나 산타라 불리는 성주간은 가톨릭 뿌리를 지닌 스페인 전역에서 널리 기념하는 축일이다. 바다와 가까운 발렌시아에서는 세마나 산타도 바다의 독특한 향취를 띤다. 카바니알, 카니아멜라르, 그라우 같은 바닷가 지구로 가면, 종교인들이 로브와 뾰족한 모자 차림으로 바다를 향해 행진하는 모습을 볼 수 있다.

Indigo comes from the leaves of the indigo plant, and this “blue gold” has always been highly valued. The art of indigo dyeing stretches back millennia and spans the globe, from prehistoric Peru to ancient Egypt. The art of resist block printing and indigo dyeing — known as blaudruck in Germany and Austria — took hold in Central Europe in the 17th century. After a maritime route to India was established in the late 15th century, indigo was cultivated extensively on the subcontinent and imported directly to Europe. Blaudruck thrived in Central Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the invention of synthetic indigo in the late 1800s, however, traditional indigo dyeing went into decline.
인디고는 인디고페라 틴토리아라는 식물에서 유래한 염료다. 자연에 거의 존재하지 않는 푸른색 천연염료 중 하나라 예로부터 ‘청금’이라 불리며 귀하게 여겨졌다. 인디고 염색의 역사는 장장 수천 년을 거슬러 올라간다. 선사시대 페루에서부터 고대이집트, 일본에 이르기까지 전 세계 다양한 문화권에서 인디고를 활용해왔다. 목판을 활용한 인디고 날염 기법은 독일과 오스트리아에서 ‘블라우드루크’라 불린다. 이는 17세기 중부유럽에서 인기를 끌었다. 그 이전에도 중세 유럽에서는 일찍이 대청이라는 식물을 활용해 인디고 염색을 해왔다. 그러던 중 15세기 말, 인도로 가는 새로운 해로가 발견되며 인도에 자라던 인디고를 본격 재배해 유럽으로 직수입하게 된 것이다. 인디고 날염은 18~19세기에 크게 유행하며 독일과 오스트리아 지역 언어에 흔적을 남기기도 했다. ‘일을 빼먹다’를 뜻하는 독일어 표현인 ‘blau machen’을 직역하면 ‘푸른색을 만들다’라는 의미인데, 염색한 천이 마르는 사이 인디고 염색 장인들이 휴식 시간을 가지던 데서 유래했다. 그러나 1800년대 후반, 합성 인디고가 개발되며 전통 인디고 염색은 쇠락하기 시작했다.
The traditional art of resist block printing and indigo dyeing was once widespread in Europe. Today, only a handful of workshops remain, two of them in Austria.
인디고 날염 공예는 한때 유럽 전역에서 유행했지만 오늘날에는 몇몇 작업장만 남아 있다. 그중 2곳이 오스트리아에 자리한다.
Today, only two blaudruck workshops still turn out indigo-dyed fabric in Austria — Blaudruckerei Koó, in the village of Steinberg-Dörfl, in Burgenland; and Blaudruckerei Wagner, in Upper Austria. But interest in the traditional craft has been growing in recent years. Blaudruck in Austria, along with Czechia, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, was inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018.
Blaudruckerei Koó was founded in 1921 by the grandfather of indigo-dyer Joseph Koó, who runs the business with his wife, Miriam. Meanwhile, Karl and Maria Wagner’s workshop is a fourth-generation family business founded in 1878. Both are easily reached from Vienna — and from the Salzkammergut region, which is one of the European Capitals of Culture 2024.
At Blaudruckerei Koó, I get a peek into the intricate process of indigo dyeing and block printing. Patterns are created on cloth by using wooden blocks to apply a dye-resistant resin called papp, leaving the printed areas undyed. The blocks — some over 200 years old — are made from hard woods like pear and linden. They bear intricate designs formed by metal pins and strips. Koó shows me blocks his grandfather purchased from itinerant merchants 100 years ago.
2018년, 체코, 독일, 헝가리, 슬로바키아와 더불어 오스트리아의 인디고 날염 공예가 유네스코 무형문화유산에 등재됐다. 이와 더불어 최근에는 전통공예를 둘러싼 관심이 늘며 오스트리아에 남아 있는 인디고 날염 작업장 2곳도 주목받고 있다. 부르겐란트 지역의 마을 슈타인베르크 되르플에 자리한 블라우드루케라이 쿠와 어퍼오스트리아 지역의 블라우드루케라이 바그너다. 요제프 쿠는 1921년 창립한 블라우드루케라이 쿠를 3대째 이어오고 있다. 블라우드루케라이 바그너는 1878년에 설립했으며, 현재 카를과 마리아 바그너 부부가 4대째 운영하고 있다. 두 작업장 모두 비엔나와 올해 유럽 문화 수도로 선정된 잘츠카머구트 지역에서 쉽게 찾아갈 수 있다. 나는 블라우드루케라이 쿠를 방문해 인디고 날염 작업이 이루어지는 복잡하고도 긴 과정을 지켜보았다. 장인은 목판을 활용해 ‘파프’라는 방염 수지를 발라 천에 직접 무늬를 찍어낸다. 무늬를 제외한 나머지 부분을 염색하는 방식이다. 목판에는 작은 구리 핀과 금속조각으로 정교한 무늬를 새겨놓았다. 그에 따라 도트 패턴, 꽃무늬, 줄무늬 등 다채롭고 반복적인 디자인이 탄생한다. 패턴의 모티브는 이 지역의 다양한 자연환경을 반영한다. 요제프 쿠는 조부가 100년 전 행상에게서 구입했다는 목판을 보여준다. 배나무나 벚나무 같은 단단한 목재로 만든 목판 중에는 무려 200년이 넘은 것도 있다.
For the next stage of the process, the cloth is wound onto a metal frame and submerged in a dye vat containing a mix of water, indigo and lime. When winched out, the indigo-soaked cloth comes into contact with air and changes almost magically from shades of green to blue. This process is repeated several times before the cloth is washed in hot water to dissolve the papp, leaving the undyed pattern white. Finally, the cloth is hung outside to dry. The repeating designs range from small clusters of dots to delicate sprays of flowers and bands of white. While these motifs are drawn from the surrounding landscape, they aren’t specific to one area. The main difference between blaudruck from Burgenland and Upper Austria is actually the fabric used — cotton and linen, respectively.
목판으로 무늬를 찍어낸 천을 금속 틀에 끼운 다음에는 물과 인디고, 석회를 혼합한 용액이 든 염색 통 안에 푹 담근다. 천의 물기를 짜내고 나면, 인디고 염료가 스며든 천이 공기와 접촉하며 초록색에서 푸른색으로 마법처럼 변한다. 이 과정을 여러 번 반복한 뒤 천을 뜨거운 물에 헹궈서 파프를 용해시킨다. 그다음, 무늬 부분을 남기고 푸르게 염색된 천을 야외에 널어 말린다. 부르겐란트 지역과 어퍼오스트리아 지역의 인디고 날염을 구분 짓는 것은 원단이다. 어퍼오스트리아는 리넨을, 부르겐란트는 면을 주로 사용한다. 요제프 쿠는 도펠드루케 기법의 전문가이기도 하다. 도펠드루케는 옛 회전식 직물 인쇄기를 활용해 천 양면에 서로 다른 디자인을 새기는 기법이다. 이를 활용해 한쪽 면은 출근용 옷, 반대쪽 면은 나들이용 옷에 적합한 무늬를 새길 수도 있다.
Austria’s blaudruck workshops are small-scale, family-run businesses, and their success contributes to the local economy. Beyond their rich history and cultural value, the beautifully dyed fabrics are eco-friendly. Unlike synthetic indigo, plant-derived indigo is sustainable, biodegradable and nontoxic. There’s wisdom in this old tradition, and there are myriad reasons for preserving the technique and art.

Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, who devises projects to address the climate crisis, is conducting the long-term Smog Free Project in an attempt to reduce air pollution and foster a cleaner future. A highlight of this initiative is the Smog Free Tower, dubbed the world’s first smog vacuum cleaner. Standing at 7m tall, this air purification device has been installed in public places in a variety of locations including Korea, China, the Netherlands, Mexico and Poland. Using patented positive ionization technology, the towers help produce clean air. Smog Free Rings are pieces of jewelry made from the compressed smog particles collected during this process.
기후 위기에 맞서는 프로젝트를 고안하는 네덜란드 예술가 단 로세하르더는 대기오염을 줄이고 깨끗한 미래를 만드는 ‘스모그 프리 프로젝트’를 진행하고 있다. 그중 ‘세계 최초의 스모그 진공청소기’로 불리는 스모그 프리 타워는 공공장소에 세워진 7m 높이의 공기정화장치로 지금까지 한국과 중국, 네덜란드, 멕시코, 폴란드 등 여러 나라에 세워진 적이 있다. 특허받은 양이온화 기술을 사용해 스모그 없는 공기를 생성하고, 사람들이 무료로 깨끗한 공기를 마실 수 있도록 하는 것이 목표다. 이 과정에서 수집된 압축 스모그 입자로 만든 반지, ‘스모그 프리 링’은 현재 미국 유타미술관과 암스테르담시립미술관 등 세계 각지에서 영구 소장하고 있다.
Since its inception in 2001, luxury fashion house Stella McCartney has been showcasing ethical fashion by eschewing the use of leather, fur or feathers. McCartney, the company’s founder, continuously collaborates with brands developing innovative new materials. These include Mango Materials and Air Carbon, two leaders of sustainability trends in fashion. Last year, McCartney participated in the COP28 climate conference as a representative of the fashion industry, hosting an exhibition titled Sustainable Market: Innovating Tomorrow’s Solutions. The 12 participating companies showcased products made from innovative materials, all featuring plant-based alternatives to fur. Highlights included garments made using biodegradable sequins, dresses made using seaweed-based fiber and leather bags reprocessed using discarded grape skins from vineyards.

A web of interconnected spoons, chopsticks as long as an arm and bowls shaped like alien creatures are just a few of the creative objects used in Amsterdam-based studio Steinbeisser’s “Experimental Gastronomy” experience. The initiative features renowned international chefs, tableware by artists who use natural materials and a vegan menu with ingredients harvested from sustainable farming practices. At a recent event in Basel, Switzerland, chefs Zizi Hattab, from Zurich’s up-and-coming vegan restaurant KLE, and Karime López, from Gucci Osteria in Florence, created a tasting menu featuring dishes using ingredients sourced from local farms and used cutlery inspired by shapes found in nature such as wood, stone and rye. A portion of the project’s proceeds go toward restoring natural habitats and endangered native plant species in the Netherlands.

With the threat of mass coral die-offs due to climate change, Counting Coral is preserving coral through underwater art installations. The nonprofit group installs sculptural coral gene banks on the seafloor. Made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel, with rough surfaces conducive to coral attachment, the material can last up to 200 years, and the structures are sturdy enough to withstand severe storms. These structures help repopulate nearby reefs, eventually forming thriving coral communities that support an estimated 25% of marine biodiversity. Visitors can see 138 of these structures off the coast of Nacula Island, Fiji. Counting Coral’s next project, which will help plant nearly 500 corals, is taking place in March at Fiji’s VOMO Island.

What if the apocalyptic world of the sci-fi disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow (2004) became our new reality? In preparation for such a possibility, a global initiative was created: the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, on Spitsbergen Island, in the far northern part of Norway. This massive seed bank, a project guided by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will hopefully help preserve the Earth’s plant diversity. Designed to protect seeds from natural disasters or wars and to secure future food sources for humanity, the vault houses around 1.2 million seed samples, including key crops like wheat, barley and rice. The varieties include white eagle corn, a crop that’s sacred to the Cherokee Nation. All the seeds are stored in a vault deep within the permafrost, which should be unaffected by rising sea levels and remain intact for at least 200 years.

The Eden Project is a growing global movement working with nature to respond to the planetary emergency. Its home in Cornwall, U.K. is a transformed china clay mine where nature now thrives through the collaboration of experts in architecture, design and planning. The Eden Project is a successful example of a sustainability project that’s revitalized the local economy and restored the damage done to the area’s natural environment. After opening in March 2001, the site welcomed an impressive 1.2 million visitors in its first year alone. The Eden Project is also home of the National Wildflower Centre and Eden Geothermal. The project is also expanding globally with new Eden Project visitor destinations and wild-site restoration projects. Eden Project Qingdao, the first Eden Project to be built outside of Cornwall, is expected to open in 2025.

Debuting High-Efficiency Aircraft
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and take the lead in sustainable aviation, Korean Air has adopted high-efficiency aircraft. The airline now maintains the youngest fleet among major domestic full-service carriers, with an average aircraft age of 11.8 years. Its fleet (A220-300, B787-9, A321-neo, B737-8) produces 20-25% less carbon emissions per seat than competing aircraft. Korean Air plans to introduce 90 new aircraft by 2028 and replace six A330 and six B777-200ER aircraft with newer models to reinforce its commitment to low-carbon aviation.
저탄소 비행의 시작, 고효율 친환경 항공기
현재 항공 부문에서 온실가스를 감축하기 위한 가장 효과적인 수단은 연료의 효율을 개선한 ‘고효율 항공기’를 도입하는 것이다. 대한항공은 적극적으로 신형 고효율 항공기를 도입함으로써 국내 대형 항공사(FSC) 중 가장 낮은 수준인 11.8년의 평균 기령을 유지하고 있다. 대한항공의 항공기 중 A220-300, B787-9, A321-neo, B737-8은 동급 기종 대비 좌석당 탄소배출량을 20~25%까지 감축할 수 있는 신형 고효율 항공기다. 특히 A220-300과 B787-9는 회사의 주력 기종으로써 각각 국내 단거리 노선과 해외 장거리 노선에 적극 투입돼 친환경 저탄소 비행에 앞장서고 있다. 대한항공은 2028년까지 총 90대의 신형기를 도입하는 동시에, 20년을 초과한 경년 항공기인 A330 6대와 B777-200ER 6대 등을 순차적으로 교체할 계획이다.
Pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), crafted from eco-friendly sources like household waste, used cooking oil and agricultural by-products, are helping us achieve greener skies. While they cost 3-5 times more than traditional fuels and are challenging to produce, SAF can be blended with traditional jet fuel and they produce up to 80% fewer carbon emissions. In June 2021, Korean Air struck a partnership with Hyundai Oilbank to manufacture and promote the use of sustainable fuels. From January 2022, Korean Air became the first national airline to use SAF on its Paris-Incheon route, a significant milestone. Going forward, Korean Air seeks to further expand the use of SAF through cooperation with governments, refineries and airports.
친환경에 한 걸음 앞장서는 지속가능항공유
지속가능항공유는 폐식용유와 생활폐기물, 식물성기름 등 친환경 연료로 만든 대체 연료다. 기존 항공유와 혼합해 사용할 수 있고, 화석연료에 기반한 항공유 대비 탄소배출량을 최대 80%까지 저감할 수 있어 훨씬 친환경적이다. 하지만 기존 항공유 대비 가격이 3~5배가량 높고 생산이 제한적이라는 한계점이 존재한다. 대한항공은 이를 해결하고 국내 항공산업에서 지속가능항공유를 활성화하기 위해 2021년 6월 국내 정유사 현대오일뱅크와 ‘지속가능항공유 제조 및 사용 기반 조성 협력을 위한 MOU’를 체결했다. 2022년 1월부턴 국적항공사 최초로 파리-인천 정기노선 구간에 지속가능항공유를 사용해 운항 중이다. 대한항공은 여기서 그치지 않고 정부, 정유사, 공항 등과 적극적으로 협력해 지속가능항공유 사용 비중을 늘릴 계획이다.
Airline-Inspired Upcycling Creations
Korean Air is continuing to introduce unique line of aircraft-related upcycled products. The airline’s projects include transforming retired life vests into cosmetic pouches and repurposing uniforms worn by flight attendants into medicine pouches. Nonrecyclable in-flight blankets are being turned into hot pack covers and safety gear for earthquake drill training. With employees participating in various projects, Korean Air is donating the upcycled items to welfare organizations and fire stations, helping to make the world
a better place. Since 2021, the airline has also released limited edition luggage tags and golf ball markers made from retired aircraft parts sporting a unique color, design and identification number. These products have been snatched up upon release, showing that sustainability efforts and aviation are a powerful combination.

Through projections and sound, the acclaimed 50-minute experience reimagines the colorful works of art created throughout David Hockney’s 60-year career. Three years in the making, the exhibition was created with the active participation of the artist, making the final result even more meaningful.

In recent years, Korea has seen a surge in its number of spaces devoted to vinyl LPs. At the recently opened Vinyl Starfield Suwon, visitors can choose from over 10,000 LPs and listen to music while enjoying the ambience of the epic new Starfield Library. The LP Music Charging Station in Damyang, Jeollanam-do Province, has a collection that includes The Beatles albums and classics from the ’70s and ’80s. The Uijeongbu Music Library, in Gyeonggi-do Province, meanwhile, is a unique public library with books and a vinyl collection with a nice selection of jazz, blues and R&B.

The country’s most celebrated cherry blossom festivals are held in Jinhae, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, and the Yeouido neighborhood of Seoul. Visitors can see a riot of forsythia blooming at Eungbongsan Mountain in Seoul; Yudalsan Mountain in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do Province; and the scenic Yeonhwaji Lake in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.
3월 중순부터 남부지방을 시작으로 노랗게 물드는 개나리. 벚꽃보다 조금 더 일찍 개화해 진달래와 함께 겨울의 끝을 알리는 꽃이다. 관상용뿐만 아니라 한약의 소재나 술의 재료가 되는 등 여러모로 유용하다. 서울 응봉산, 전라남도 목포 유달산, 경상북도 김천 연화지 등지에서 활짝 만개한 개나리를 감상할 수 있다.
Plum blossoms dazzle springtime revelers with their splendor. Plum blossoms come in a variety of colors, including magenta and white. While they look similar to cherry blossoms, they peak a bit sooner. Beginning in mid-March, plum blossom festivals are held in Gwangyang and Haenam, in Jeollanam-do Province; and Hadong and Yangsan, in Gyeongsangnam-do Province. In Seoul, stunning magenta plum blossoms bloom all across the foothills of Bukhansan Mountain, not to mention at Bongeunsa Temple.
매실나무의 꽃인 매화는 붉은색, 흰색 등 다양한 색깔의 꽃잎을 지녔다. 이 중 흰 꽃잎은 얼핏 벚꽃과 비슷하지만, 벚꽃보다 보름가량 일찍 만개한다. 3월 중순부터 전라남도 광양과 해남, 경상남도 하동과 양산 등지에서 매화 축제가 개최된다. 서울에선 북한산 자락, 봉은사, 창덕궁 낙선재 등에서 빨간 홍매화가 꽃을 피운다.
On March 20 and 21, for the first time ever, the LA Dodgers and San Diego Padres will start the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome. The opening game will be superstar Shohei Ohtani’s regular season debut as a Dodger. Meanwhile, the Padres’ lineup will include the Korean players Kim Ha-seong and Go Woo-suk. On March 17, the Dodgers will face the Gocheok Sky Dome’s home team, the Kiwoom Heroes, and the Padres will play Korea’s national team. On March 18, the Padres will play the LG Twins, and the Dodgers will face the national team.

Seomun Night Market and Chilseong Night Market, two of the most iconic night markets in Daegu Metropolitan City, will resume operations from early April. These celebrated night markets feature local specialties such as makchang (tripe) and yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef), which go well with local craft beer and cocktails. At Seomun Night Market, one can also enjoy a variety of street performances as well as media facade exhibitions projected on the walls of a nearby parking tower. Several subway stops away, at Chilseong Night Market, visitors can eat in a comfortable 400-seat space or stroll over to the Sincheon Stream.

The 9th edition of the Jeju Food and Wine Festival (jfwf.kr) is taking place for 10 days from May 9-18, welcoming bon vivants with an array of gastronomic experiences. Special events include the Taste of Jeju program featuring international dishes made from local ingredients. Other highlights include a Gala Dinner by Michelin-star chefs including Kang Min-chul, Kwon Woo-joong, Kim Do-yun and Lee Chung-hu, and a special dinner where world-renowned wine critic James Suckling will recommend wines. New at this year’s festival are food film screenings, a wine class and wine fair and a dessert fair.

Storied Treasures
Hwaamsa Temple has no main gate. Instead, it boasts the lofty Uhwaru Pavilion. After a 30-minute hike from Hwaamsa’s parking lot, the pavilion appears like a fortress, supported on curved wooden columns above rustic stones. Located in Jeollabuk-do Province’s Wanju-gun County, the temple is embedded in the county’s northern hills. I head out on a quest to gain deeper insight into the long legacy preserved by the temple and the unique architectural element of Geungnakjeon Hall — the main reason behind the temple's designation as a national treasure.
“There’s no Iljumun (main gate at the entrance to Korean Buddhist temples) at Hwaamsa,” says So Jin-suk, a cultural guide. “Instead, I feel I'm already inside the temple grounds every time I cross this valley.” After traversing the narrow valley path and reaching Uhwaru, there’s a sense of expansion and fulfillment. Stepping into the courtyard, one can take in the entire landscape with a single glance.

국보가 된 건축 부재
화암사에는 정문이 없다. 대신, 공중에 뜬 누각 우화루가 있다. 화암사 주차장에서 출발해 30여 분 산길을 걸어 올라가면 꿈같은 장면이 나타난다. 각기 모양이 다른 자연석 기단 위, 휜 나무를 그대로 옮겨놓은 듯한 기둥 위로 누각이 성채처럼 솟아 있다.
예향의 도시라 불리는 전주시를 감싸는 완주군. 이곳의 가장 큰 명소는 자연으로, 2개의 도립공원, 반짝이는 여러 저수지가 수려하게 펼쳐진다. 많이 알려져 있지 않지만, 과거 완주는 전주와 마찬가지로 전통공예가 발달했던 곳이다. 완주 북부의 산기슭에 파묻힌 화암사는 그 이야기를 간직한다. 이곳을 찾은 이유는 명확했다. 국보로 지정된 극락전을 보는 것, 구체적으로는 이곳이 국보로 지정된 이유인 특수한 건축 부재를 보는 것이었다. 그런데 절을 찾아가는 산길에서부터 이미 미학적 체험이 시작됐음을 깨닫는다.
“화암사에는 정문에 해당하는 일주문이 없지요. 대신 저는 이 계곡을 지날 때마다 일주문에 들어선다고 속으로 생각해요.” 소진숙 문화 관광 해설사의 말이다.
한국 전통 건축은 독립된 ‘채’들이 모여 하나의 군집을 형성한다고 본다. 건축가들은 채에서 채로 이동할 때마다 나타나는 공간의 변화를 세심하게 설계해 담아냈다. 수백 년간 화암사를 찾은 이들은 아마 비슷한 체험을 했을 것이다. 좁은 계곡 길을 지나 우화루에 당도했을 때, 공간적 스케일이 확장되는 듯한 개방감, 작은 문간채를 지나 마당으로 들어서서 절을 한눈에 담을 때의 충만감. 건물 4채는 꼭 맞물리듯 마주 보고 서서 마당을 이룬다.
Beyond here lie the Geungnakjeon Hall, the exquisite pavilions Uhwaru and Jeokmukdang, as well as the bronze bell Dongjong, which was given cultural heritage status by Jeollabuk-do Province. Approaching Geungnakjeon Hall, faded celestial beings (bicheon) seem to dance between the eaves. The long wooden beam or rod known as haang, a structural design element in Korean architecture where an additional beam is inserted to support the weight of the eaves, allows the eaves to extend much further. This architectural feature, presumed to have been widely used during the Baekje Dynasty (18BC-AD660) era, was first discovered at Hwaamsa Temple, and it testifies to cultural exchanges between China and Korea at that time. Originally a provincial architectural treasure, Geungnakjeon Hall was elevated to the status of a national treasure in 2011 due to these findings. So why are remnants of haang only found here at Hwaamsa Temple? The answer is likely connected to the temple’s secluded location. “Monks built small hermitages here because it was a place where people couldn’t easily get to for spiritual practice,” says Bangchak, the abbot, who has resided here for nearly 40 years. Hwaamsa, as it stands now, was rebuilt in the 17th century and there are even tales of revered monks from the Silla Dynasty (57BC–AD935) who stayed here, but the exact details about its origins are unclear. Amid fragments of stories, Bangchak’s succinct words ring like a signpost: “A life surrounded by treasures — there’s pride in that.”
국보인 완주 화암사 극락전, 보물인 완주 화암사 우화루와 적묵당은 물론, 전북특별자치도 유형문화재인 화암사 동종, 국가등록문화재인 완주 화암사 괘불도도 저 너머에 잠들어 있다. 아까 지나온 우화루는 한쪽에서 보면 단층 건물로, 구조가 개방돼 있어 마당의 연장처럼 보인다. 안과 밖이 하나가 된 곳, 그 경계에 목어가 유유히 떠 있다. 극락전 가까이 다가간다. 지붕을 받치는 처마 사이마다, 춤추며 날아다니는 비천(飛天)들은 이미 빛이 바랬다. 처마 위, 용을 본떠 조각한 긴 목조 부재가 바로 하앙식 구조다. 하앙은 무게를 지탱해 지붕이 더 길게 뻗을 수 있도록 한다. 여러 유물에 묘사된 바로 미루어 백제에서 많이 사용했으리라 추정만 하던 것을 처음 화암사에서 발견했다. 이는 당시 중국과 우리나라의 문화적 교류를 증명한다. 원래 보물이었던 극락전은 이런 이유로 2011년 국보로 승격됐다. 하앙은 어째서 이곳 화암사에만 남아 있는 걸까? 그 답은 짐작만 할 따름이지만, 아마도 이곳의 고립된 아름다움과 닿아 있을 것이다. “사람들이 자주 올 수 없는 데서 수행해야겠다 생각한 승려들이 조그만 암자를 짓고 산 거죠.” 화암사 주지로 40년 가까이 이곳에 머무는 방착 스님의 말이다. 지금의 화암사는 17세기에 다시 지어졌다. 절 뒤쪽 화암사 중창비는 15세기에 화암사를 중건했고 신라시대 원효대사와 의상대사가 이곳에 머물렀다는 이야기를 담고 있다. 시작도, 사연도 정확히 알 수는 없다. 이렇듯 파편 같은 이야기들 사이에서 방착 스님의 간결한 말은 표지처럼 들린다. “보물에 둘러싸여 사는 거니까, 자부심이 있지.”
Framing the Mountainous Landscape
The remote mountains of Wanju have long served as a place of refuge. At the end of the 19th century, missionaries fled the government’s persecution of Catholicism and erected what’s considered to be Korea’s first Catholic church built in the style of a hanok (traditional Korean house). Destroyed during the Korean War, Doejae Catholic Church was restored in 2006 based on old records. The bell tower has a tiled roof, and there are separate entrances for men and women, reflecting the era when it was originally built.
Heading south along National Route 17, I arrive at the mountain-encircled O Sung Hanok Village. Restored in 2012, the village’s 20 or so hanok serve as homes, places of accommodation, bookshops and cafés.
산을 담은 액자
완주의 산속을 절박하게 찾은 이들도 있었다. 19세기 말, 조선 정부의 천주교 박해를 피해 선교사들은 외딴 산간지대에 우리나라 최초의 한옥 성당을 세웠다. 이는 한국전쟁 때 전소되었다가 2006년 옛 기록에 따라 복원했다. 화암사 인근의 되재성당지다. 기와지붕을 얹은 종탑, 성별에 따라 나뉜 출입구는 당시 시대상을 담는다. 이곳에서 매주 미사가 열리는 날이면 인근 신도들이 모인다.
17번 국도를 따라 남쪽으로 향한다. 산봉우리에 둘러싸인 오성한옥마을은 2012년 이후 주민들이 한옥을 새로 짓거나 이축하며 활기를 되찾았다. 한옥 20여 채는 독립 서점, 카페, 숙소 등으로 운영하고 있다. 그중 소양고택은 예술가 레지던시나 워케이션 프로그램, 북 토크 등을 활발하게 운영한다.
Long ago, when the village was a bit quieter, Jeon Hae-gap, an architect from Jeonju City, came here and admired the view of Jongnamsan Mountain. He was inspired to build his dream home, Awon Gotaek — an art gallery and bed-and-breakfast. In one of the galleries, a visitor meditates in darkness in a bell-shaped structure. Above this underground space is the nearly 200-year-old hanok and garden. After contemplating what would constitute the most beautiful home with a unique story, Jeon envisioned a hanok — specifically, an old one, or gotaek. For over 20 years, he’s gradually added elements and unique touches to Awon to consummate his vision. “A hanok ... can be dismantled, moved and reassembled anytime,” he says. “Koreans made use of fantastic frames. The view from a hanok window is just one example,” explains Jeon as he guides me to a window that frames the green slopes of Jongnamsan Mountain.
오래전, 마을이 조용했을 때, 전주 출신 건축가 전해갑은 이곳에서 종남산 전망을 발견하고 자신이 꿈꾸던 집을 구상했다. 한옥 스테이 겸 갤러리 아원은 동선을 철저히 계산해 꾸렸다. 방문객은 맨 먼저 모던한 갤러리를 만난다. 오픈형 갤러리의 기둥 겸 스크린에서는 이이남 작가의 디지털아트 작품이 재생되고, 벽면 거울은 인근 종남산과 하늘을 비춘다. 두 번째 갤러리에선 아트·디자인 스튜디오 오마스페이스의 체험형 설치작품을 전시 중이다. 보이지 않지만, 종 모양 구조물 안에서는 한 관람객이 헤드폰을 쓴 채 어둠 속에서 명상을 체험하고 있다. 또한 보이지 않지만, 관람객들의 머리 위에는 200년 가까이 된 고택과 정원이 도사리고 있다. 왜 고택이었을까? 전해갑 대표는 가장 작고도 아름답고 고유한 이야기를 담은 집이 무엇일까 고민 끝에 한옥, 그것도 오래된 가옥을 떠올렸다고 말한다. 20여 년간 그는 아원을 조금씩 덧대고 가꾸었다. 경남 진주의 한 마을에서 만난 250년 된 만석꾼 고택을 시작으로 전국 각지 고택을 발굴해 옮겨왔다. “다 무너져가는 가옥을 살려 자연 앞에 얹어만 놨어요. 한옥은 건축이 아니라 고가구예요. 언제든 해체해서 옮기고, 다시 꿰어 맞출 수 있거든요.” 기와 한 장, 문고리 하나까지 일일이 해체해 옮겨와 다시 조립하는 데 수 년씩 걸리기도 했다. 최근에는 전남 함평의 200년 된 서당을 추가했다. 전 대표가 가장 공들였다는 건물로, 아원에서 제일 외떨어진 분위기다. “선조들은 기가 막힌 액자를 사용했어요. 창으로 보이는 경치, 차경이라고 하죠.” 전해갑 대표가 서당의 창가 자리를 권한다. 창밖 풍경은 높낮이와 각도를 세세히 계산해 만들어낸 것이라, 자리에 앉아야만 제대로 감상할 수 있다. 푸른 종남산이 창을 채운다. 마음에 잠시 고요가 깃든다.
From Grain Warehouse to Book Repository
A 30-minute drive west of Awon is Samnye-eup Township, a tranquil village beside the Mangyeonggang River, not far from Jeonju. A crucial transport hub since the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), it was an important transshipment point for grain during the Japanese occupation. The grain storage facilities in Samnye were transformed into cultural spaces from around 2013. They include Samnye Culture and Arts Village, Samnye Book Village and the Picture Book Museum. The wooden truss structure at the Book House, in the Book Village, was designed to reduce moisture and preserve the stored grain. Now, it protects the collection of over 100,000 secondhand books. Within the Book House is Hosanbang, an antique bookstore opened by Park Dae-heon in Seoul in 1983 and relocated here. Hosanbang carries a selection of vintage texts selected by Park, which date back to the 17th century or earlier through to the 1950s. When asked for a recommendation, Park selects a particularly thick volume written by a British naval officer in the 19th century featuring color paintings of oddly dressed figures that look vaguely Korean. “These were sketched from memory by a European painter after he encountered Koreans for the first time. Quite fascinating, aren’t they?” he remarks. Thanks to the bibliophile’s extensive knowledge, the store offers an experience that transcends books.
양곡 창고에서 책의 창고로
아원에서 서쪽으로 30여 분 차를 타고 달려 우리나라에서 가장 넓은 하천 습지인 신천습지와 만경강에 닿는다. 강은 우리나라 최대의 평야인 호남평야를 관통해 서해로 흘러든다. 전주시와 맞닿은 완주군 삼례읍은 만경강을 품은 고요한 마을이다. 조선시대부터 전국 교통의 요지였는데, 이 때문에 일제강점기에 양곡 수탈의 거점이 되었다. 당시 삼례에 들어섰던 양곡 창고는 2013년경부터 차례로 문화공간으로 다시 태어났다. 복합문화공간인 삼례문화예술촌과 삼례책마을, 그림책미술관이 그것. 서로 도보 거리에 위치한 세 공간은 삼례에 신선한 분위기를 불어넣는다.
삼례책마을은 세계 최초의 책마을인 영국 헤이온와이를 비롯한 해외 책마을에서 영감을 얻었다. 2층 규모의 북하우스 대부분은 헌책방이 차지한다. 국내 최대 규모의 헌책방이다. 습기를 줄이기 위한 목조 트러스 구조는 양곡뿐 아니라 10만 권 넘는 헌책에도 유효했던 듯하다.
삼례책마을의 심장은 북하우스 한편에 자리한 호산방이다. 박대헌 이사장이 1983년 서울에 연 이 고서점은 몇 차례 자리를 옮기다 이곳 삼례에 터를 잡았다. 삼례책마을이 헌책방 콘셉트인 것도 박 이사장의 영향이다. 수백 년 전부터 1950년대에 이르는 고서뿐 아니라 한국전쟁 당시 포로가 된 유엔군이 쓴 편지, 나뭇잎을 활용한 1700년대 인도의 불경까지, 호산방에서는 박대헌 이사장의 안목으로 고른 골동품을 다룬다.
천장까지 닿을 만큼 높은 책장 여기저기에 고색창연한 책이 꽂혀 있다. 그중 한 권을 추천해달라는 요청에 고심하던 박대헌 이사장이 두꺼운 책을 꺼낸다. 영국 해군인 저자가 19세기에 쓴 <Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea>다. 조선인 같지만 조선인은 아닌, 희한한 복장의 인물들이 채색화로 그려져 있다. “조선 사람을 처음 만난 유럽 화가가 돌아간 뒤 기억을 떠올려 스케치한 거예요. 재미있죠?” 애서가의 설명이 끊이지 않는다. 이 오래된 창고를 채우는 건 단지 책뿐이 아니라는 생각이 든다.
Samnye Culture and Arts Village This collection of 11 buildings includes four exhibition halls, a café, and indoor and outdoor performance venues. The Vincent van Gogh exhibition, which features replicas of Van Gogh’s works made from metal, runs until April 30, while a crafts exhibition by local artists associated with Samnye Culture and Arts Village runs until June 30.
삼례문화예술촌 총 11개 건축물이 모인 곳으로, 4개 전시관과 카페 그리고 실내외 공연장을 운영한다. 고흐의 원작을 포스아트로 제작, 완성한 레플리카 작품이 포함된 <빈센트 반 고흐>전이 4월 30일까지, <삼례문화예술촌 지역작가 공예품 공모 전시>가 6월 30일까지 열린다.
Samnye Book Village The Book Museum in Samnye Book Village holds exhibitions that Director Park Dae-heon curates by making careful selections from his personal collection. An exhibition focusing on the revered poet Kim Sowol and his mentor, An Seo, is on show. Titled An Seo and Sowol, it runs until May 12.
삼례책마을 삼례책마을의 책박물관에서는 박대헌 이사장이 본인 소장품으로 기획한 전시를 선보인다. 5월 12일까지는 <안서와 소월> 전을 연다. 시인 김소월과 그의 스승인 시인 안서의 편지를 중심으로 기획한 전시다.
Picture Book Museum Curated by Director Park Dae-heon of Samnye Book Village, the Picture Book Museum is devoted to unpublished manuscripts of picture books by world-renowned authors. Its permanent exhibitions showcase three giants of Victorian era picture books. Meanwhile, an exhibition of original picture book illustrations by Helen Haywood, titled Pond in the Forest, will continue through to April 14.

Busan has its fair share of famous dishes, including dwaeji-gukbap (pork and rice soup), milmyeon (wheat noodles) and bunsik (snack food). Few in Korea are aware, though, that myeongnan (pollack roe) is also part and parcel of Busan’s history. I’d heard that when it comes to pollack roe, “all roads lead to Busan.” And I can remember two types of salted pollack roe: mentaiko, a specialty of Fukuoka, Japan, which is just off the coast from Busan, and the myeongnan-jeot (salted pollack roe) that was a dining room staple at the home where I grew up in nearby Busan. Perhaps this city is at the heart of a dizzying labyrinth of intertwining tales about this peculiar ingredient. So I set off to Busan with a curiosity about pollack roe origins and a craving to sample some myself. Before I could get to the roe, however, I needed to track down the fish. That took me to Choryang Ibagu-gil, in Busan’s Dong-gu District. On one side of a big supermarket parking lot stands a large brown wall — all that remains of Namseon Warehouse. Back in 1900, the warehouse was used to store items carried by ship from the provinces of North and South Hamgyong-do, in present-day North Korea, during the dawn of modern logistics in Busan. Namseon Warehouse was known as the “Pollack Shed” mainly used to store pollack until Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule. This evocative site gives us an inkling of how much pollack used to pass through the city.
돼지국밥, 밀면, 분식…. 부산을 대표하는 음식은 무수히 많지만, 한국인에게 익숙한 식재료 명란이야말로 부산의 역사와 궤를 같이하는 음식이라는 사실을 아는 사람은 많지 않다. 명란을 찾아 부산으로 내려간 것은 우연히 마주한 “명란의 모든 길은 부산으로 통한다”는 한 문장 때문이었다. 일본 후쿠오카의 특산물로 알려진 명란덮밥 그리고 부산과 인접한 고향에서 어릴 적부터 밥상에 올라온 명란젓이 어딘가 모르게 겹쳤던 것도 관련이 있었을 것이다. 이 독특한 식재료를 둘러싼 복잡하고 기묘한 이야기가 부산을 중심으로 얽히고설켰다는 것을 어렴풋이 느끼기라도 했을까. 막연한 기대를 품고 부산행을 택했다. 부산에서 명란의 시작을 알기 위해 먼저 명태의 흔적부터 찾았다. 동구 초량로13번길에서다. 대형마트의 주차장 한편에는 앙상한 가시덤불에 덮인 갈색 벽, 남선창고터가 남아 있다. 남선창고는 1900년 함경도에서 배로 해산물을 싣고 와 보관하던 부산 최초의 근대적 물류 창고였다. 냉동고가 없던 시절, 바닥에 수로를 만들어 물기를 제거하고 서늘하게 유지했다. 해방 전까지 남선창고는 주로 명태를 보관해 일명 명태고방으로 불렸다. 남선창고는 부산에서 명태가 얼마나 활발하게 유통됐는지를 유추할 수 있는 상징적인 흔적이다.
Starting in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), large quantities of pollack were caught off of Korea’s northeastern coast, including the Hamgyong-do provinces. So how did a fish that’s not caught near Busan come to be stored there? Pollack is something of a national fish in Korea, and big catches were brought in from the waters off of the Hamgyong-do and Gangwon-do provinces between the 17th century and mid-20th century. It’s believed that the food spread to Japan in the modern era. Pollack emerged as a potential replacement for herring after the collapse of the once-thriving herring fishery of Hokkaido, Japan.
조선시대부터 함경도를 중심으로 동해 북쪽 지방에서 대량 어획한 명태가 어째서 잡히지도 않았던 부산에 보관됐을까? 명태는 17세기부터 20세기 중엽까지 함경도, 강원도 지방에서 어획한 국민 생선이다. 당시까지만 해도 명태는 조선인들의 생선으로 그쳤다. 분포 범위가 청어와 대구보다 훨씬 북쪽인 데다가 서해에 유입된 적이 없어 중국에선 근대 이전까지 명태에 대한 지식이 없었다. 일본 에도시대에는 명태가 잡히기는 했지만, 중요하게 취급받지 못했다. 중국과 일본이 명태를 주목하기 시작한 것은 근대 이후의 일이었다. 당시 홋카이도에서 성황이던 청어 어업이 갑작스럽게 쇠퇴하자 이를 대체할 새로운 어종으로 명태가 떠오른 것이다. 명란의 이야기도 여기서 시작된다.
Japanese fishermen and merchants were enchanted by Korea’s salted pollack roe (myeongnan jeot), which was made by adding garlic and red pepper powder to the roe and then fermenting it. Pollack was being sold in various forms in the fish markets around Namseon Warehouse, and salted pollack roe naturally grew in popularity. A Busan-born Japanese businessman named Kawahara Toshio moved to Fukuoka after Korea’s liberation, and was unable to forget the flavor of the salted pollack roe at Choryang Market. So he adapted the dish to Japanese palates under the name mentaiko, laying the groundwork for the company Fukuya, Japan’s best-known producer of the dish.
소금과 마늘, 고춧가루를 넣고 발효시킨 조선의 명란젓이 일본 어민과 상인들에게 퍼지며 그들의 입맛을 매료했다. 명태가 보관된 남선창고를 중심으로 인근의 어시장에선 다양한 명태가 유통됐고, 자연스럽게 명란젓도 인기를 끌었다. 부산에서 태어난 일본인 가와하라 도시오는 광복 이후 후쿠오카로 갔지만, 초량시장의 건어물상에서 사 먹던 명란젓 맛을 잊을 수 없었다. 이를 개조해 일본식 ‘멘타이코’를 개발한 것이 지금의 일본 명란을 대표하는 기업, 후쿠야의 시작이다.

Visiting Myeongnan Road
I take a stroll along Choryang Ibagu-gil, a historical walk that takes in the Namseon Warehouse and includes a stretch called Myeongnan Road. Cute characters inspired by pollack roe line the steps of staired sections, and there’s a huge pollack mural. The Myeongnan Brand Lab was established on this road as part of a project by Busan’s Dong-gu District Office to tap into the area’s heritage. Visitors can learn about the history of Busan’s pollack industry before buying food products and related items. They can also sample pollack roe-based foods while enjoying a sweeping view of the neighborhood. Employees from Fukuya, across the sea in Japan, recently paid a visit to collect information about the roe and try the dishes.
명란로드를 찾아서
초량동의 남선창고터 위로 난 이바구길을 오르다 숨이 턱끝에 찰 때쯤, 명란로드를 만나게 된다. 귀여운 명란 캐릭터가 계단 곳곳에 그려져 있고 커다란 명태 벽화가 있는 길이다. 이곳에 자리한 명란브랜드연구소는 부산 동구청에서 선보인 명란 전문 공간이다. 부산 명태의 역사와 명란 이야기를 듣고 명란과 굿즈를 살 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 명란으로 만든 다양한 음식을 탁 트인 전망을 바라보며 맛볼 수 있다. 최근에는 후쿠야의 직원들이 방문해 명란과 관련된 자료를 취재하고 음식을 시식하기도 했다.
부산이 명란의 중심지가 된 데에는 아이러니하게도 명태 어획량의 급감이 연관돼 있다. 1986년 이후 명태 어획량이 급격히 하락했고, 2008년에는 공식적으로 어획량 ‘0’을 기록했다. 이후 이 사태를 심각하게 여긴 정부는 2kg 이상의 활어 명태 성체를 잡아오면 어시장 도매 금액의 10배에 달하는 포상금 20만 원을 내걸기까지 했지만, 명태는 우리 앞바다에서 흔적을 감췄다.
Ironically enough, Busan’s rise as a pollack roe hub is connected with a sharp decline in the pollack catch off of Korean waters. Alaska pollack are now mostly caught in the Sea of Okhotsk, off of Russia, and the Bering Sea, off of the U.S. The pollack roe that’s produced in the U.S. is traded in Seattle. But Russia doesn’t have adequate facilities for storing and trading the approximately 30,000 tons of pollack roe it produces annually, and eventually Russian merchants settled on using Gamcheon Port in Busan. The port had excellent refrigeration facilities and affordable customs and storage fees, which made it highly suitable for holding and trading the hefty volume of pollack roe coming from Russia. These days, when pollack are caught by Russian fishing ships in the Sea of Okhotsk, the roe is removed from the fresh catch on deck and quick-frozen ahead of being shipped to Gamcheon Port. Every March, pollack roe that was collected in the Sea of Okhotsk arrives at Gamcheon Port. Hundreds of buyers from around Japan and Korea gather at the port for bustling auctions that last until May.
명태는 이제 러시아 오호츠크해와 미국 베링해에서 주로 잡힌다. 미국에서 생산된 명란은 전량 미국 시애틀에서 거래된다. 하지만 인프라가 부족했던 러시아는 3만여 톤의 명란을 보관하고 거래할 곳을 찾아야 했고, 그들의 눈에 들어온 곳이 다름 아닌 부산의 감천항이었다. 부산은 1990년대 초반부터 감천항 일대를 수산 무역 기지로 건설해왔는데 이곳의 우수한 냉동 설비와 저렴한 통관 및 보관 비용은 러시아에서 오는 3만여 톤의 명란을 저장하고 거래하기에 적합한 조건이었다. 이후 지금까지도 러시아 오호츠크해에서 잡은 명란은 배 위에서 바로 알을 꺼내 급속 냉동 후 감천항으로 직행한다. 매년 3월이 되면 오호츠크해에서 잡은 명란은 감천항에서 본모습을 드러낸다. 일본과 한국 전역에서 온 수백 명의 바이어가 이곳에 모여 활발한 경매를 진행한다. 5월까지 이뤄지는 경매는 감천항을 찾는 모든 이가 마주할 수 있는 진귀한 구경거리다.
Pollack Roe, Part of Busan’s Culture
“Several factors came together to make Gamcheon Port the global marketplace for Russian pollack roe,” says Jang Jong-su, president of Deokhwa Food, a pollack roe business located at Gamcheon Port. “The upshot is that most companies making pollack roe products for export to Japan are based in Busan.”
Jang Jong-su is following in the footsteps of his father, Jang Seok-jun, the founder of Deokhwa Pollack Roe. The elder Jang is the first and only person recognized by the Korean government as a master artisan in the area of seafood production.
Jang Jong-su has worked to unearth forgotten pollack roe recipes from the Joseon Dynasty. In 2020, he finally unveiled Joseon-style pollack roe, prepared using traditional methods. His Joseon-style pollack roe has been selling well online, and he’s also organized experimental pop-ups at Michelin Guide restaurants and Japanese restaurants run by younger chefs.
문화가 된 부산의 명란
“감천항이 러시아산 명란의 국제 검품장으로 발전한 것은 여러 조건이 맞아 벌어진 일이었습니다. 덕분에 일본으로 수출할 정도로 맛 좋은 명란을 만드는 기업이 대부분 부산에 집결됐죠.”
감천항에 터를 둔 덕화푸드 장종수 대표의 말이다. 장 대표는 수산 제조 분야 최초이자 유일한 대한민국 명장인 아버지 장석준 덕화명란 창립자의 뜻을 이어 부산의 명란 문화를 이끌어가고 있다. 그 역시 몇 해 전 수산전통식품분야에서 한국 최초의 명란 명인으로 선정됐다. 그는 일본식 명란뿐만 아니라 잊힌 조선시대 명란을 다시 구현하기 위해 끊임없이 애썼고, 전통 제법으로 만든 조선명란을 2020년 출시했다. 황교익 음식 칼럼니스트는 덕화푸드의 조선명란을 두고 “통쾌한 짠맛”이라고 표현했고,
<바다음식의 인문학>을 집필한 정혜경 교수는 “한국의 발효 음식이 지속하려면 덕화명란 같은 젊은 젓갈 장인들이 많이 나와야 한다”고 말했다. 조선명란은 새벽 배송을 하는 온라인 스토어를 중심으로 활발하게 판매됐고, 젊은 셰프들이 포진한 일식당이나 미쉐린 스타 레스토랑 등에서 실험적인 팝업스토어를 열기도 했다.
When it comes to pollack roe in Busan, Busan Heo Myeongnan also deserves a mention. The company was given a youthful rebrand by two women hoping to expand their father’s business. While the company specializes in pollack roe intended for grilling, its YouTube channel features some unusual recipes for pollack roe in sotbap (clay pot rice), pasta, rice cakes and even tanghulu (candied fruit). Next, I head to Bujeon Market to try pollack roe gimbap (rice rolls), one of the market’s bestsellers. The establishment run by Choe Yong-heon makes thick gimbap rolls stuffed with pollack roe that’s delightfully rich and savory. Every morning, visitors come from far and wide to line up in front of the store for some satisfying pollack roe gimbap. Even today, new pollack roe dishes are being developed in Busan, and it’s being used in minari (water celery) pancakes, pork belly, eel over rice, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), fish cake korokke (Japanese-style croquettes) and fruit salad. Busan became a pollack roe hub through chance and good fortune. But now that tradition is being reclaimed and new dishes are being created, so the prominence of Busan’s pollack roe shouldn’t be regarded as a mere accident.
부산에서 주목받는 명란 2세대는 또 있다. 바로 부산허명란이다. 명란업계에 종사했던 아버지의 사업을 확장하고자 경영과 디자인을 전공한 두 딸이 젊은 감성으로 브랜딩한 기업이다. “처음에는 선물용 정도로만 판매했습니다. 그런데 명란을 단순한 밥반찬으로 생각하는 사람이 많았어요. 어떻게 먹느냐는 질문도 많이 받았죠. 저희는 어릴 적부터 아버지 덕분에 명란을 다양하게 먹어왔고, 그런 경험을 알리고 싶었어요.” 부산허명란 허동관 대표의 말이다. 구이용 명란을 전문적으로 판매하는 부산허명란의 유튜브에서는 명란을 넣은 돌솥밥이나 파스타는 물론 명란떡과 명란을 이용한 떡빼로, 명란탕후루 같은 독특한 레시피도 선보인다. 감천동에 자리한 쇼룸 겸 카페에선 명란을 구입할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 명란바게트 같은 디저트를 맛볼 수 있다. 가장 대중적으로 변화한 명란을 맛보기 위해 부전시장으로 발걸음을 옮긴다. 시장의 명물 명란김밥이 그 주인공이다. 오픈한 지 약 3년 만에 부전시장의 유명 맛집이 된 이곳의 최용헌 대표는 시장에서 명란젓을 판매하던 고모에게 영감을 받아 김밥을 만들었다. 김밥 재료 속에 손질한 명란을 넣고 두껍게 만 명란김밥은 짭조름하면서도 고소한 맛으로 입맛을 사로잡는다. 매일 아침부터 시장 상인들은 물론 멀리서도 명란김밥을 맛보러 온 사람들이 작은 가게 앞에 줄을 잇는다. 명란미나리전, 명란삼겹살, 명란장어덮밥, 명란떡볶이, 명란어묵고로케, 명란과일샐러드…. 부산에선 지금도 명란을 활용한 수많은 음식이 개발되고 있다. 부산이 명란의 허브가 된 것은 분명 우연과 행운을 통해서이겠지만, 전통을 되찾는 동시에 새로운 요리가 만들어지고 있는 지금, 부산 명란의 명성은 더 이상 단순한 우연만이 아닐 것이다.

Art is simultaneously a product of human creativity and of tools. Tens of thousands of years ago, humans were able to create cave drawings using pigments made from mud or crushed stones. Were it not for the invention of paint tubes by American painter John G. Rand, the 19th century Impressionist style of painting would never have been born. In the 20th century, tools with no connection to art came to be used as artistic mediums. Korean artist Nam June Paik, for example, was using televisions in his art by the 1960s. Artificial intelligence, however, is entirely different from the tools artists have employed thus far. AI can trace its roots to the question that mathematician Alan Turing posed in the 1950s: “Can machines think?” Turing believed it would be possible to distinguish man from machine, and the imitation game known as the Turing Test has long been used as a benchmark for determining the capabilities of AI.
예술은 인간 창조성의 산물인 동시에 도구의 산물이다. 수만 년 전 동굴 벽화는 흙이나 돌가루로 만든 안료와 동굴을 밝혀주는 불 덕분에 완성될 수 있었다. 미국 화가 존 G. 랜드가 튜브물감을 발명하지 않았더라면, 스튜디오 밖으로 뛰쳐나가 자연의 빛을 자신이 느끼는 대로 그렸던 19세기 인상파 화풍은 탄생하지 못했을 것이다. 20세기 들어서는 예술과 무관한 도구들이 예술적 매체나 재료로 재탄생하기 시작했다. 1960년대에 백남준은 텔레비전 브라운관을 작품의 재료로 활용했다. 인공지능은 지금까지 예술가들이 활용한 도구와 사뭇 다른 모습이다. 인공지능은 1950년대 수학자 앨런 튜링이 던진 “기계도 생각할 수 있는가?”라는 질문에서 시작됐다. 그는 기계와 인간을 구별하는 것이 가능할 거라고 여긴 질문들로 구성한 ‘이미테이션 게임’을 제안했다. ‘튜링 테스트’라고도 알려진 이 게임은 오랜 시간 인공지능의 능력을 판단하는 척도로 여겨지기도 했다.
Nowadays, however, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard produce answers that are difficult to distinguish from human answers. Unlike paint tubes or the Braun tubes in TVs, AI can engage in voice or text conversations. AI technology can fill us with either anticipation or anxiety, as it’s hard to know how AI will respond to our questions. So how might AI impact the creativity of visual artists, and what does the creation of art by nonhuman entities hold in store for artists?
하지만 이제 오픈AI의 챗GPT나 구글이 공개한 바드는 “색깔과 모양만으로 자신을 묘사하세요” 같은 질문에 인간과 구별하기 어려운 답을 내놓는다. 안료가 말라붙을 걱정을 덜어준 튜브물감이나 캔버스를 대신하게 된 텔레비전 브라운관과 달리, 음성이나 문자로 ‘대화’할 수 있는 인공지능에는 마치 의식이 존재하는 듯 느껴지기도 한다. 때로는 인공지능이 우리의 질문에 어떤 답을 내놓을지 알 수 없어 기대나 걱정을 하게 된다. 피할 수 없는 인공지능의 물결은 시각 예술가들의 창조성에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있을까?
Love or Hate, Which Lasts longer?
Ai vs AI (2023) is a public art project by Ai Weiwei that consists of 81 questions fed to an AI platform. The questions are displayed on massive electronic displays set up in London’s Piccadilly Circus and K-POP Square, in Seoul’s Gangnam area, from January 11 to March 31. The 81 questions are inspired by the 172 questions posed to the gods in Heavenly Questions, a book penned by Chinese poet Qu Yuan. “Love or hate, which lasts longer?” is the fourth question Ai posed to the AI platform. ChatGPT’s answers to the 81 questions are uploaded daily, along with the artist’s responses. AI is an essential collaborator in this project, and the audience is asked to share their thoughts.

<Ai vs AI>(2023년)는 아이웨이웨이가 인공지능에게 던지는 81개의 질문과 답변으로 이뤄진 공공예술 프로젝트다. 런던 피커딜리서커스와 서울 강남의 K-팝 스퀘어에 설치된 대형 전광판에 하루 하나씩 공개되는 81개의 질문은 기원전 중국 전국시대의 시인 굴원이 신을 향해 던진 172개의 질문을 모은 <천문(天問)>에서 착안한 것으로, 1월 11일부터 3월 31일까지 81일간 이어진다.
“사랑과 증오, 둘 중 무엇이 더 오래 지속될까?”는 인공지능을 향한 작가의 네 번째 질문이다. 81개 질문에 대한 챗GPT의 답변과 작가의 의견은 프로젝트를 기획한 CIRCA의 소셜미디어를 통해 매일 공개되며, 관객들은 자신이 생각하는 질문과 답을 적극적으로 공유한다. 예술가가 던진 질문에 예술가 자신과 인공지능이 각기 답하고 관객에게도 생각을 묻는 것이다. 즉, 아이웨이웨이의 작품에서 인공지능은 빼놓을 수 없는 협업자가 된다.
Hallucinating AI as a Creative Tool
As AI continues to develop, the phenomenon of hallucination is a major issue that must be addressed. “Hallucination” refers to the phenomenon whereby generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT give false answers to people’s questions or even fabricate facts. Although this could be a fatal flaw in commercial use, it opens up creative space for artists.
Refik Anadol’s work Refik Anodol: Unsupervised (2022) caused a sensation when it was installed in the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It shows what happens when an AI algorithm begins “hallucinating” after being fed thousands of artwork images.
The same applies to the artist’s work Machine Simulations: Life and Dreams - 희로애락 (2023), which can be seen in the lobby of the 63 SQUARE building, in Seoul’s Yeouido neighborhood. In this piece, the artist used visual data from the annual Seoul International Fireworks Festival, brainwaves that track emotions and the movements of K-pop choreography to make the AI alternately “dream” or “hallucinate.” To Anadol, AI is both a brush versed in techniques that deal with long periods of time and a meticulous studio assistant to exchange ideas with. Of course, communication between the artist and assistant takes place through programming codes or the adjustment of prompts.
환각에 빠진 인공지능, 창작의 도구가 되다
인공지능의 환각 현상은 나날이 발전하는 인공지능을 개선하기 위해 반드시 개선되어야 할 큰 문제로 지적되곤 한다. 이는 챗GPT와 같은 생성형 인공지능이 인간의 질문에 대해 틀린 답을 하고, 심지어 존재하지 않는 사실을 지어내는 현상을 말한다. 산업적으로는 치명적 단점이 될 수 있는 이 현상이 예술가에게는 창조적인 틈을 찾아내는 기회가 되기도 한다.뉴욕현대미술관 로비에 설치되어 큰 반향을 일으킨 레픽 아나돌의 작품 <Refik Anodol: Unsupervised>(2022년)는 사실 미술관 소장품을 학습한 인공지능 알고리즘을 치명적인 환각에 빠트린 결과물이었다.
서울 여의도의 63빌딩 로비에서 만날 수 있는 아나돌의 <Machine Simulations : Life and Dreams-희로애락>(2023년) 역시 마찬가지. 작가는 매년 서울에서 열리는 서울세계불꽃축제의 시각 데이터와 감정을 느끼는 뇌의 뇌파, K-팝 안무의 움직임을 재료 삼아 인공지능이 꿈을 꾸거나 환각에 빠지게 만들었다.
아나돌에게 인공지능은 긴 시간에 걸쳐 다루는 법을 익힌 붓이자, 꼼꼼하게 의견을 주고받는 작업실의 조수일 테다. 물론, 작가와 인공지능 조수의 소통은 컴퓨터프로그램의 코드를 수정하거나 입력값을 조정함으로써 이뤄진다.
Creatures in an Artist-Created World
For his 2022 exhibition Ian Cheng: Worlding, at Seoul’s Leeum Museum of Art, artist Ian Cheng created digital creatures that move in accordance with patterns he established. Like a heartless god, he doesn’t intervene in the world of his own making. Living under an AI algorithm the artist created, the artificial lifeforms perform distinct movements whenever the computer running the world is turned off and on again. Occasionally, they even evolve, like organisms in the real world. In this case, AI is akin to a natural phenomenon that powers a world created by the artist. There are those who claim that the world we find ourselves inhabiting is really just a highly advanced simulation. If this is true, then even your experience of reading this article could be taking place in an artificial universe. Cheng’s second Korean solo exhibition, Thousand Lives, opened in Seoul’s Gladstone Gallery on February 23.
신념이 담긴 가방, 작가의 피조물이 되다
인공지능이 그 이름처럼 ‘인공적’으로 만들어진 ‘지능’이라고 생각하면, 인공지능은 모든 예술가의 꿈을 실현하는 도구가 될 수도 있다. 바로 예술가의 비전에 따라 만들어진 독립적 세계를 세우는 일이다.
서울 리움미술관에서 전시 <이안 쳉: 세계건설>(2022년)을 선보였던 이안 쳉은 본인이 설정한 행동 양식에 따라 움직이는 인공적 생명체들을 디지털로 만들고, 그들이 살아 움직이는 모습을 작품으로 보여준다. 이런 존재들에 ‘신념이 담긴 가방’이라는 이름을 붙이기도 했다. 작가는 무심한 창조주처럼 이 존재들에 대해 개입하지 않는다. 작가가 설정한 인공지능 알고리즘에 따라 작품 속에서 살아가는 인공 생명체들은 작품을 구동하는 컴퓨터가 꺼지고 켜질 때마다 매번 다른 움직임을 보여주고, 때로는 현실 세계에서 생명체가 진화하는 것처럼 변형을 일으키기도 한다. 여기에서 인공지능은 작가가 만들어낸 세계를 구동하는 자연현상처럼 존재한다.
우리가 삶이라고 생각하는 것이 사실은 고도로 정교한 시뮬레이션이라고 말하는 사람들의 주장이 사실이라면, 지금 이 글을 읽는 독자의 경험 역시 어느 예술가가 만든 인공 세계의 한 장면일지 모른다. 마침 이안 쳉의 국내 두 번째 개인전 <Thousand Lives>가 지난 2월 23일 글래드스톤 갤러리 서울에서 개막했다.
AI’s Creative Potential
If we view art as something that interprets and rearranges our world in a way that transcends convention, modern AI could be a tool that abounds with artistic potential. Painter Noh Sangho entered selected images into several image-generating AI algorithms and asked them to imagine the missing parts. The generative AI produced peculiar results that Noh could never have imagined, and he took inspiration from this, transferring the images to canvas in his own style.
Did Noh leave the creativity to the AI and simply transform these digital images into real-world pictures? He believes that artistic creativity is not within the power of the AI that generated the strange images. AI and the Changing Definition of Art
If generative AI platforms based on large language models learn from ever larger volumes of data, perhaps they will soon be generating high-resolution images that appear to have been created by the artists mentioned in this article. Can anyone then label themselves an artist? Hito Steyerl is one artist who’s put forward controversial criticisms about AI image generation. Steyerl claims that the technology we refer to as “artificial intelligence” is actually causing “artificial stupidity” to spread. Steyerl believes that artists must have the finesse to discern truth and art in the text and images generated by AI, and asks us to consider whether the creativity and productivity promised by AI is actually confining us to restricted tools and environments within a particular algorithm. As the use of AI grows, we’ll ultimately have to redefine many of the things we used to take for granted in various domains, and art is no exception.

결국, 어떤 분야든 인공지능 사용이 늘어날수록 우리는 지금까지 당연하게 여겼던 많은 것을 새롭게 정의해야만 할 것이다. 물론, 예술 또한 예외는 아니다.

Christopher Nolan’s 12th cinematic creation brings to life the 20th-century scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, regarded as the father of the atomic bomb. The film was inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus (2005) and boasts a star-studded cast, with Cillian Murphy playing Oppenheimer. With five awards at the 81st Golden Globes, including the Best Picture and Best Director, the film is the highest-grossing biopic ever.
Nolan portrays Oppenheimer as a pivotal figure in history with a complex inner life. The narrative covers three significant periods: the Manhattan Project, during World War II, in which Oppenheimer oversaw nuclear bomb development; a government hearing casting Oppenheimer as a political scapegoat; and a confirmation hearing for Lewis Strauss as chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. However, the narrative reaches its crescendo when the first nuclear bomb is tested. When the button is pressed, Nolan lets viewers experience one of the most significant moments in human history. The film was meticulously shot using IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, with the Strauss confirmation hearing captured on black-and-white film. The sounds of the nuclear explosion were created by the multiple Oscar-winning sound designer Richard King.

Officially selected for the non-competition category at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, Cobweb (2023) is Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s 10th feature film. A comedy that takes place over a two-day span on a 1970s film set, Cobweb serves as satire of the Korean film industry in the era when Korea was a dictatorship. In the movie, the director Kim Yeol’s obsession with reshooting Cobweb’s ending leads to clashes among censors, producers and lead actors, culminating in chaos on the set. The film itself and the film inside the film reach their respective climaxes at the same time. The actors Song Kang-ho, Im Soo-jung, Oh Jung-se, Jung Soo-jung, Jeon Yeo-been and Park Jung-soo all deliver outstanding performances. Director Kim Jee-woon’s devotion to his craft resonates throughout the film. He is renowned for such films as I Saw the Devil (2010), A Bittersweet Life (2005) and A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), while actor Song Kang-ho will be familiar to viewers for his role in Parasite (2019).

Following the release of their second full-length album in Korea, THE WORLD EP.FIN: WILL, at the close of 2023, the boy band has maintained strong sales for six weeks in a row (as of mid-January 2024). They’ve dominated Korean music charts and also secured the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard 200. ATEEZ’s new album became the 23rd non-English album to land on this chart and the 7th non-English album in 2023 to reach the top. Comprising 12 tracks, the new album has drawn much attention. Achieving “million seller” status, the album sold over 1.7 million copies in its first week and reached an impressive No. 2 spot on the U.K. Official Albums Chart. The album’s lead single, Crazy Form, expresses ATEEZ’s unique, witty style. Its music video shattered the group’s own record by gaining 10 million views within about seven hours of its release. No other fourth-generation K-pop boy band has garnered so many views within 24 hours of releasing a music video. ATEEZ is set to make history as the first K-pop boy group to grace the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, with performances on April 12 and 19.
