We The Fest, a festival blending Indonesian and international music scenes, marks its 10th anniversary this year. Held over three days from July 19-21, this edition will feature DJ Peggy Gou performing as a headliner in Indonesia for the first time. Renowned Indonesian musicians 3 DIVA, made up of Krisdayanti, Ruth Sahanaya and Titi DJ, will appeal to audiences of all ages. Several Korean artists will also grace the event, including BIBI, who grabbed global attention after her appearance on 88rising’s Futures set at Coachella 2024, as well as hip-hop icons Tiger JK and Yoon Mi-rae.

Every summer since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery, known for its contemporary art exhibitions in London’s Kensington Gardens, has commissioned internationally-acclaimed architects, such as Zaha Hadid and the Bjarke Ingels Group, to design a pavilion. This year, the gallery selected Minsuk Cho and his firm Mass Studies to design the 23rd Serpentine Pavilion, which will be open to the public until October 27. Cho, who co-curated the Golden Lion-winning Korean Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, has titled the pavilion Archipelagic Void. It features five “islands” in a star-shaped layout, each functioning as a gallery, auditorium, library, tea house and play tower. At the center is a courtyard inspired by traditional Korean houses.
동시대 미술을 감상할 수 있는 서펜타인갤러리는 매년 여름 국제적으로 명성 있는 건축가에게 런던 켄싱턴 가든의 파빌리온 설계를 맡기는 프로젝트를 2000년부터 진행해왔다. 이후 지금까지 자하 하디드, 비야르케 잉엘스 그룹 등 세계적 건축가가 개성 있는 건축물을 선보였다. 올해는 2014년 베니스비엔날레 건축전에 한국관 전시 총괄 및 공동 큐레이터로 참여해 황금사자상을 수상한 건축가 조민석과 그의 건축사무소 매스스터디스가 23번째 설계자로 선정됐다. 10월 27일까지 ‘군도의 여백’이라는 이름으로 방문객을 맞이한다. 별 모양을 이루는 5개의 ‘섬’으로 불리는 공간은 각각 갤러리, 강당, 도서관, 티 하우스, 플레이 타워로 변모하며, 그 중심엔 한국 전통가옥에서 영감을 얻은 작은 안뜰 ‘마당’이 있다. 각 공간은 쉼터 및 관람객이 체험 가능한 현장 프로그램을 운영한다.

Nodeul Jiknyeo Cafe, at the northern end of the Hangang Bridge, will reopen on July 16 as a luxury accommodation space called Sky Suite Hangang Bridge Seoul. The 144m² unit, which was remodeled in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Airbnb, includes a living room with a spectacular night view of the Yongsan area and a bedroom designed to capture the iconic city view of the Han River. Guests can enjoy year-round events held along the Han River, including the Yeouido Fireworks Festival.

Set against the majestic backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the outdoor musical event Thunerseespiele will take place on Lake Thun from July 10 to August 24. This year’s highlight is Mary Poppins, a musical jointly produced by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, known for global hits like Les Misérables and Cats. Based on Pamela L. Travers’ novel, the musical tells a fairy-tale-like story of how Mary Poppins, a new nanny to the Banks family, brings hope and happiness through magic. The performance is directed by Matthias Davids, one of the most renowned musical theater directors across all German-speaking countries.

Public Transportation The best way to get around Slovakia is by train as there are fast intercity trains between Bratislava, Košice and Poprad (at the foot of the High Tatras). To reach some attractions, take a local bus. Bring cash as cards are not always accepted.

Immerse yourself in the serene surroundings at the day’s end, when the terracotta rooftops below are bathed in the rays of the setting sun. One of the most iconic destinations in Bali is Rock Bar at Ayana Resort, nestled on the coastal rocks south of Jimbaran Bay. The bar offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, and you may feel as if you’re floating on the waves if you choose to sit at one of the ocean-facing tables. The bar is particularly famous for its views at sunset, when the surface of the sea is painted scarlet. To conveniently or more comfortably get down to the bar from the high cliff above, take the funicular. Alternatively, you can take the stairs. Sei Kee Cafe’s milk tea and coffee have been a part of Macao’s culture and community for nearly 60 years.Macao is a destination for the epicure. The UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy draws food lovers the world over thanks to a plethora of choices for all budgets and palates. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was in Macao recently for the debut of his eponymous Pub & Grill at The Londoner Macao. Drawn by Macao’s energy, Ramsay sees it as “a culinary destination on a great trajectory.” Shedding light on the local food culture, Dr. Annabel Jackson, who researches and writes about Macanese cuisine, explains that “Macao has three national cuisines — Cantonese, Portuguese and Macanese. The food offerings are rich and diverse, from local street eats of offal and pork chop buns, to the high-end Michelin-rated restaurants.” In this South China enclave, Chinese food predominates, especially Cantonese food. Dine like a local at a Cha Chaan Teng (tea restaurant), which serves hearty noodles, toast and local confections. Veng Kei, in Taipa Village, has been serving pork chop noodles and buns along with iced milk tea for over half a century. Kapok, named a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, serves dim sum and Cantonese favorites like BBQ roasts.

Macao’s coffee scene, which began with espresso, has been joined by specialty coffee shops, including Brew Lab.Portugal held Macao as a colony from the 16th century until 1999 and left an indelible mark on the local architecture and cuisine. For authentic Portuguese food, head to Miramar in Coloane, a restaurant with rustic coastal vibes, or A Petisqueira in Taipa Village, popular among locals for its garlic clams, seafood rice and sweet desserts like serradura (“sawdust pudding”) and chocolate mousse. According to Jackson, “Macanese food is a unique creole cuisine of the Indian Ocean; its dishes made with local ingredients include spices and goods from the Portuguese ships plying the trade routes.” Encompassing Chinese, Portuguese, Malay, African and Goan influences, Macanese food has evolved into a cuisine of its own, now recognized by UNESCO as the world’s first fusion cuisine.

Often touted as the “Las Vegas of the East,” Macao’s Cotai Strip is home to luxury hotels and resorts offering world-class dining. Asia’s first Palazzo Versace opened there in March, as did the Karl Lagerfeld maison’s first hotel, The Karl Lagerfeld, last June.

I go to Casa Don Alfonso at the Grand Lisboa Macau for their signature calzone. The Izzo Scugnizzo electric oven heats up to 450 degrees Celsius, creating the right conditions for a crisp yet bread-like base, typical of authentic Neapolitan pizzas. Macao’s humidity affects the dough, and the chef’s mastered the fine balance of proofing in a different climate. Pasta dishes here are simple and perfectly cooked al dente, finished with robust fresh sauces — all the tomatoes come from the Italian garden of the chef’s father. The wine list is also amazing and very good value for money.

로부숑 오 돔의 셰프 쥘리앵 통구리앙
시그니처 칼조네를 먹으러 그랜드 리스보아 호텔의 카사 돈 알폰소를 찾곤 해요. 450℃까지 가열한 이초 스쿠니초 전기 오븐이 정통 나폴리피자 특유의 바삭하면서도 빵 같은 식감을 만들어내죠. 마카오의 습도는 반죽에 영향을 미치기에, 이곳 셰프는 본고장과 다른 기후에서 반죽을 발효시키는 미세한 균형을 찾아냈습니다. 파스타는 단순하고도 완벽한 알 덴테로 익힌 뒤 신선한 소스로 마무리합니다. 토마토는 셰프의 아버지가 운영하는 이탈리아의 정원에서 재배한 것입니다. 와인 리스트도 훌륭하고 가성비가 좋은 편입니다.

I love going to the Jin Yue Xuan seafood restaurant, which does great Cantonese dishes and dim sum, along with fresh seafood. I like to order the simple stir-fries. Guangdong-style Chinese food is all about the wok hei — that caramelized, subtle smoky taste of a wok fry, tossing, sizzling on very high heat. It takes a lot of skill to do wok work. I’m a Huaiyang cuisine chef, and my food is more focused on the crafting and knife work — how we slice an ingredient is pivotal to how it’s cooked and how it’ll taste. It’s very different from Cantonese food, so on my day off, I like to enjoy something different.

광둥 음식과 딤섬, 신선한 해산물을 요리하는 진웨 쉬안을 즐겨 찾습니다. 이곳에서 간단한 볶음 요리를 먹죠. 광둥식 중국요리의 맛은 웍에서 볶고 던지고 고온에 지글지글 가열해 캐러멜라이즈한 미묘한 불맛에 달려 있습니다. 웍을 다루려면 상당한 기술이 필요하지요. 반면 제가 하는 화이양 요리는 칼 사용에 집중합니다. 재료를 써는 방법이 요리법과 맛의 중심을 이뤄요. 화이양 요리는 광둥식 요리와 꽤 달라서 휴일이면 그 색다른 맛을 즐기고 싶어진답니다.

I bring all my friends visiting for a feast to Shunde Jian Hua Mei Shi, a local dai pai dong (outdoor street food stall) that opens late for after-service supper. It’s a regular haunt for chefs in Macao as they close around 2 a.m. Every dish is simple yet very tasty and complex. Seafood like fish, mantis shrimps, prawns, whelks, clams, crabs — you name it, they have it, whatever is in season. It’s also very affordable, so bring more people to your dinner party, and you can order more dishes to enjoy! I highly recommend ordering the king prawns, fried pork tongue with ginger and crunchy kale casserole.

World-renowned sommelier Marc Almert, who helped revamp Korean Air’s in-flight wine list, is heading out to visit a number of top wineries around the world this year. His first stop is South Australia, and we get a peek into his time in Adelaide, as he unveils the stories of the wines and the passionate people behind every delicious drop.

Adelaide is the perfect springboard for exploring world-class wine regions, about an hour away. Among them is the globally-renowned Barossa wine region. Growers and producers here put a spotlight on Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvédre and Cabernet Sauvignon, while just east of the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley is particularly well known for exceptional Riesling and Shiraz.
Few capture the history of the wine region like Henschke. In 2018, the family celebrated 150 years of winemaking, and six generations of family members are captured in photographs, which adorn the brand’s Eden Valley cellar door. Among them are Stephen, his wife Prue, and their children Johann, Justine and Andreas.
As labels go, Henschke’s Mount Edelstone is particularly poignant. Made from 100% Shiraz grapes harvested in Eden Valley, it was first produced in 1952, and the winery has released over 60 vintages. An impressive drop, it’s arguably Australia’s longest, consecutively-produced single-vineyard wine.

What’s going on below the earth’s surface is just as important as what’s going on above for Prue Henschke, who looks after just over 100 hectares of vineyards. “I’m a bit of an innovator so I manage the vineyard in a particular manner, which is more of regenerative viticulture,” says Prue. Affectionately known as “Prue-dynamics,” she takes an organic and biodynamic, as well as a botanical approach to vineyard management, and the winery has accumulated many global viticulture awards for her efforts. Above all, it’s about doing the best for the environment, the vines and their future. Henschke wines are made with a minimalist approach and as a result, show a strong sense of place.
헨쉬키의 대표적 레이블 중 하나인 휠라이트 시라즈부터 살펴보자. 헨쉬키 브랜드의 창시자이자 숙련된 석공, 수레바퀴 제조자이기도 했던 요한 크리스티안 헨쉬키에게 경의를 표하는 이 와인은 헨쉬키 브랜드의 초기 역사를 담고 있다. 19세기, 요한 크리스티안 헨쉬키는 유럽에서 남호주로 이주해 이든밸리에 정착했다. 그후 이곳에 가족 와이너리를 세웠다. 마운트 에델스톤은 한층 특별한 레이블이다. 이든밸리에서 수확한 시라즈 품종 포도 100%로 만드는 이 와인은 1952년에 처음 제조한 이래로 60개 넘는 빈티지가 출시됐다. 스티븐에 따르면, 영국의 지주 조지 파이프 앵거스의 후손 로널드 앵거스가 일군 포도원에서 수확한 포도로 당시 이 와인을 만들었다. 마운트 에델스톤은 호주에서 가장 오랫동안 연속 생산되는 싱글 빈야드 와인 중 하나다. 100만m² 넘는 헨쉬키의 포도원은 유기농과 생물다양성을 바탕으로 한다. “자연 재생적인 방법으로 포도를 재배해요. 천연비료를 포도나무 아래 뿌려 토양을 건강하게 하죠.” 포도밭을 관리하는 프루의 말이다. 지역 환경과 포도원의 미래를 위해 꾸준히 노력을 기울인 덕분에 헨쉬키 와이너리는 포도 재배 분야에서 세계적인 상을 여럿 수상했다. 미니멀리즘적 접근 방식을 따르고 지역성과 토질을 반영한 끝에 호주에서 손꼽히는 와인이 탄생하게 된 것이다.

To me, a truly “dangerous” wine, as its lively acidity and perfect balance causes one to finish the glass much faster than expected.

Choosing a hotel near a central train station is always a good option. Liverpool Street Station, the busiest in London, and similar hubs like Paris’ Gare du Nord, Milan’s Centrale and Zurich’s Hauptbahnhof have luxury hotels in close proximity. However, the key factor is not the hotel itself but its surroundings. If you need to catch trains frequently, staying near the station is useful; but keep in mind the surrounding hustle and bustle if you wish to take a serene stroll or jog before your day begins. Surprisingly, airport hotels can be quite pleasant. Airports are typically far from city centers, and guest turnover is often high, creating a relatively quiet environment. If your ultimate destination is near the airport, a hotel in the vicinity might be a better choice.

Korean Air operates direct flights to Paris daily. 
The Olympic Games are a world-class sporting event that tends to transform host cities. It’s every sports fan’s dream to attend the Games, and many come to see established world-class athletes compete and discover new talents. An ebullient Olympic spirit permeates the host city and stirs up excitement. Paris promised an edition of the Games that would be faster to prepare, have a smaller carbon footprint, and cost less to host. To achieve this, the city aimed to follow its playbook from 100 years ago, when the Olympics were last held in the French capital, by making good use of existing infrastructure. This is partly why the International Olympic Committee chose Paris for the 2024 Olympics. Why build new stadiums when you can install temporary structures around iconic landmarks like the River Seine or the Eiffel Tower? As an Olympic volunteer, I’ve been able to experience the preparations up close and personal. Here’s how to enjoy the sixth Olympic Games hosted by France.

From the Seine to the Place de la Concorde
For the first time ever, the Olympic opening ceremony will not be held in a stadium. Rather, it will unfold on the Seine. The river will be lined with temporary seating stands to give an unforgettable experience to thousands of spectators. And the Eiffel Tower, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, will be the backdrop for some 13,000 spectators seated in a temporary stadium on the Champ de Mars, the grassy area between the tower and the École Militaire. This venue will be used for the beach volleyball and Paralympic blind football events. Just off the Champs-Élysées Avenue, the newly renovated Grand Palais will accommodate 8,000 fencing and taekwondo fans. Archery will take place on the esplanade in front of the gold-domed Invalides, while the gardens at the Palace of Versailles will host the equestrian events and most of the modern pentathlon.

예술의 도시 파리의 랜드마크들은 임시 관람석을 갖추고 잊지 못할 경험을 선사할 참이다. 에펠탑은 올림픽 비치발리볼과 패럴림픽 시각장애인 축구 경기의 배경이 되어준다. 군사학교와 에펠탑 사이에 뻗은 마르스광장의 푸른 잔디밭에 임시 경기장이 들어서 1만 3000명에 달하는 관중을 맞는다. 1900년 만국박람회 당시 지은 그랑 팔레는 수년간의 보수공사 끝에 올림픽을 맞아 첫선을 보인다. 올림픽과 패럴림픽 펜싱과 태권도 선수들을 응원하는 박수 소리가 이곳에 울려 퍼질 것이다. 앵발리드광장에서는 양궁 경기가, 베르사유궁전 정원에서는 근대5종과 승마 경기가 열린다.
Meanwhile, the 3,300-year-old Egyptian obelisk at the center of the Place de La Concorde will bear witness to some 21st century activities like skateboarding and breaking, an urban dance style making its debut as an Olympic sport. The 30,000 or so spectators in the temporary stands will have stupendous views, straight along the Champs-Élysées toward the Arc de Triomphe, over the Seine to the Greek temple-style facade of the National Assembly or across the Tuileries Gardens to the stately Louvre Museum. The only permanent facility, built with recycled materials, is the Aquatics Center, which will host diving, water polo and artistic swimming. It’s not far from the Stade de France, where the athletics competitions and rugby sevens tournaments will take place, in the northern suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. The Olympic Village has also been built here, which will be turned into homes, offices and shops after the Games.

Olympic Games Meet Art
Paris is a sublime place for “artletes,” says French breaker and the 2022 European champion Dany Dann, “because we consider ourselves artists as well as athletes.” He explains that breakers must use their artistic side to perform with impromptu music during the competitive dance battles.
Other “artletes” have been participating in the Paris Cultural Olympiad since the summer of 2022, combining “muscles and mind” as Olympic Games pioneer Pierre de Coubertin was fond of saying. France has encouraged everyone to take part in the cultural program. For example, after a short train ride from Paris to Rouen, Normandy, you can take a 7km jog around the “capital of Impressionism.”

During the Games, many of the city’s monuments and museums will remain open to visitors, even if you have to zig-zag a bit to get there and avoid the roads that will be closed for security reasons. But it might be more tempting to join the big parties at one of over 20 fan zones, open to all and totally free, in neighborhoods you might not have discovered otherwise, such as the square in front of the city hall in the very hip 11th arrondissement.

Korean Air operates direct flights to Frankfurt daily. 
My memories of Leipzig’s Bachfest seem endless. I recall sitting mesmerized at a concert listening to world-renowned pianist András Schiff perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Goldberg Variations at the sold-out Gewandhaus hall. And then there was Leonidas Kavakos playing the haunting Chaconne in D minor for solo violin while standing next to Bach’s grave. In the dimly lit St. Thomas Church shortly before midnight, it felt like Bach was speaking to me. Such profound moments await thousands of classical music lovers who make their pilgrimage to Leipzig for 10 days in early June each year, as the city becomes a haven for all things Bach. The list of performers at the Bachfest is literally a “who’s who” of Baroque music interpreters. This year’s festival included conductors Ton Koopman and Philippe Herreweghe, violinist Isabelle Faust, harpsichordist Christine Schornsheim, and choirs from over a dozen countries.

As you wander the narrow, winding streets of Leipzig, you’re transported back through history — the two churches where Bach performed hundreds of times, the table in the Old Town Hall where “Sebastian” signed his contract with city leaders. One of my most memorable experiences was in Auerbachs Keller restaurant. Goethe actually went there and later wrote about the place in Faust. During my last visit, Mephistopheles himself (actually an actor playing him) appeared in his red-devil costume during the main course, spouting out German phrases. I was totally caught off guard but found it delightful.

After getting one’s fill of Bach, music lovers can head to Bayreuth and Munich for world-class opera festivals in gorgeous opera houses with rich histories. For fans of Richard Wagner, there is no better place than the Bayreuth Festival. Since its opening in 1876, Wagner’s operas have been performed here each summer almost every day of the week. The Ring cycle is presented every year, and the festival is a showcase for the finest Wagnerian singers and conductors. A recent addition is a production of Parsifal in which the audience wears augmented-reality (AR) headsets, allowing them to experience a mix of live action and digital imagery. Those interested in exploring sites associated with the composer may want to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The two picturesque castles south of Munich were residences of King Ludwig II. The king was a great fan of Wagner and his music, and these edifices hold images of swans and other important Wagnerian memorabilia.

On the way to visiting the castles, you’ll want to catch the Munich Opera Festival. Lasting from late June to the end of July, it features operas, productions for children, ballets and a few other concerts. The performances are in Munich’s exquisite National Theater, next to the Residenz — the home of the Wittelsbach Dynasty for centuries. Opened in 1818, the opera house was the site of the first performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Die Walküre. Mozart’s Idomeneo also had its premiere just a short walk from here. For the 2024 edition of the festival, the central theme is A Fountain That Looks to Heaven, and there are new productions of operas by Debussy and Ligeti. Several works by Puccini and Wagner complete this year’s repertoire. More than just castles, beer, sausages and the autobahn, Germany boasts a rich musical heritage and the summer months are awash with outstanding music festivals not to be missed.

1. Arrive prepared for a classical music concert. Throat lozenges alleviate coughs, and seat cushions are great for sitting through a long concert on antique church pews. Opera fans should bring a small pair of binoculars or opera glasses to see the artists up close. Don’t be the only one applauding — wait until others do if you’re unsure when to.

“Laissez les bon temps rouler is not just a saying here in New Orleans, it’s a way of life,” explains Chris Hannah, an award-winning local bartender and co-owner of Jewel of the South, a French Quarter establishment named one of the world’s top 50 bars last year. The oft-heard phrase translates to “Let the good times roll,” and I don’t think a single sentence better encapsulates this city. Famously, around 1.5 million tourists join locals each year to let loose and overindulge in the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras. Most visitors are also aware of New Orleans’ lax drinking laws — you’re welcome to drink alcohol on the street here.

But Hannah says the “good times” can also be found in the local lifestyle. “We’re famous for our food,” he says. “And, in New Orleans, good food is always accompanied by good drinks. I think we really punch above our weight when it comes to the quality of our food and beverage scene.” In fact, it’s hard to imagine a region with more iconic foods and cocktails than Louisiana. The purple, green and gold king cakes of Carnival season; the fried sweet-dough beignets covered in powdered sugar; gumbo; French 75s; po’boys; and the Sazerac — these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Louisianan specialties. Combine that list with a love to party, and it’s no wonder New Orleans is home to over 130 festivals, often revolving around our unparalleled food and drink.

Plenty to Celebrate at Tales of the Cocktail
The familiar melody of a trombone solo slides over the harmonies of a local jazz band as the succulent smell of grilled pork wafts through the air from one of five food stations at the Tales of the Cocktail festival. My Ramos Gin Fizz, which reminds me of a slice of lemon meringue pie, sends my senses into overdrive.
Now in its 22nd year, the world-renowned festival is famous for engaging the senses. A celebration of all that we love in the spirits industry, it draws industry all-stars as well as cocktail lovers from across the globe — both novice and advanced. But according to Eileen Wayner, CEO of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, that’s not how the festival began. “We started back in 2002 as a walking tour to celebrate New Orleans’ iconic cocktail history,” she explains. “The Sazerac, French 75, Café Brûlot, the Grasshopper and Ramos Gin Fizz were all invented here.”

Today, the six-day festival has become a love letter to the ever-growing New Orleans cocktail scene. Panels and presentations draw in the experts, but there’s also plenty to enjoy for casual cocktail lovers. One of the festival’s popular programs is the annual Pig & Punch event, a fundraiser for a local network of charter schools and a chance to sample world-class cocktails and barbecue from five teams competing in Hogs for the Cause — a barbecue and music festival that takes place each spring. But Pig & Punch is just one of many highlights. “Pig & Punch is fantastic,” Wayner says, “but the show-stoppers have to be our brand events.” Hosted by industry giants like Kraken Rum, Moët Hennessy and Jameson, entry to the events comes with your Tales of the Cocktail ticket (though RSVPs are required and the events fill up quickly). Spirit-centered dinners at world-class restaurants, happy hours, late-night events and exclusive parties are also part of the Tales experience.

Food Festivals Galore
Of course, it’s not just cocktails that get their day in the New Orleans sun. Though the big festivals — for example, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the more locally-focused French Quarter Fest — are technically springtime celebrations of music, plenty of attendees go for the opportunity to try some of their favorite festival foods (crawfish bread and Crawfish Monica pasta got almost as much hype this year as the Rolling Stones).
But dozens of smaller festivals exist with the sole purpose of paying tribute to the city’s most iconic Creole, Cajun and Southern dishes.
“New Orleanians grow up eating po’boys,” says Justin Kennedy, general manager and head chef at Parkway Bakery, a favorite spot for getting the city’s most famous sandwich — a protein source such as a meat or fried seafood that’s “dressed” with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mayo, and stuffed between two long halves of crusty French bread.

It’s our culture.” That celebration includes two music stages and some 40 po’boy purveyors serving up everything from classic options to those that push boundaries — a Tunisian smoked tuna po’boy, anyone? The Oak Street Po-Boy Festival is a spectacle, but it’s not the only one. The National Fried Chicken Festival along Lake Pontchartrain in October, the Creole Gumbo Festival in the historic Tremé neighborhood in early-November, and the Beignet Fest, taking place a week later. There’s something to celebrate every month, if not every weekend. But what else would you expect from a city called “The Big Easy?”

The Seoul Outdoor Library is a relaxing retreat within the busy metropolis. This year, the program is set up at three locations: Seoul Plaza and Gwanghwamun Plaza, where reading, concert and play zones are integrated; and on the steps along the Cheonggyecheon Stream. Along the stream, you can find eco-friendly seating and soban (individual dining tables) as well as books for all ages, so you can enjoy reading while soaking your feet in the cool water. Seoul Outdoor Library will operate as an outdoor night library and remain open from 4-9 p.m. until September, with special events including band performances and movie screenings. The outdoor library program will run until November 20.

Nestled in the southernmost mountain ranges of the Korean Peninsula, Hapcheon-gun County in Gyeongsangnam-do Province remains untouched by expressways and train stations. Yet, its 2,000-year-old relics draw many to this serene locale. The historical treasures here seem to be shrouded in a layer of mystery, from the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks, to the tombs of the ancient Gaya Confederacy (42-562) and a solitary stone lantern left behind after a long disappeared temple. To experience this landscape imbued with such unique vestiges of time, I set out on a pastoral journey through the gentle peaks, tranquil rivers, wetlands and quiet villages of Hapcheon.
한반도 남쪽으로 뻗어 내려가는 산맥 끝자락에서 살짝 비켜난 곳, 경남 합천에는 아직 고속도로나 기차역이 없다. 하지만 2000년을 아우르는 역사 유적은 많은 이를 이곳으로 불러 모았다. 오래전 나라를 지키기 위해 승려들이 새긴 해인사 팔만대장경, 1980년대에야 발견된 고대 왕국 가야의 고분군, 연혁을 정확히 알 수 없는 절인 영암사가 사라진 뒤 홀로 남은 석등··· 합천의 유적은 유독 신비하고 모호해 보인다. 이처럼 고유한 시간이 깃든 땅은 어떤 곳일까? 지리산과 덕유산 사이를 메우는 부드러운 봉우리들, 조용한 마을을 가로지르는 강과 습지를 향해 목가적인 여정을 떠났다.
In Search of the Elusive Golden Frog
Just south of the old part of town in Hapcheon, Jeongyang Wetland Ecological Park is formed by the Hwanggang River. One of the few wetlands in the province, it awakens early. I witness yellow floating hearts bloom, a mother duck teaching her six ducklings how to forage, and water striders tracing delicate ripples across the water’s surface.
Such morning scenes have repeated for thousands of years here, though there was a pause in the 1980s when the building of the Hapcheon Dam lowered water levels and degraded water quality. By around 2007, the county and its residents rallied and spent five years restoring the wetland. As a result, wildlife returned including otters, Reeves’ turtles and swans.
숨은 금개구리 찾기
경상남도의 몇 안 되는 습지 중 하나는 합천 구도심 남쪽에 자리한다. 바로 도로와 주거 단지 틈에 파묻히듯 자리한 정양늪 생태공원이다. 황강은 합천을 동서로 가로지르며 긴 모래밭과 함께 이 아담한 늪을 이룬다. 늪은 잠에서 일찍 깬다. 밤새 오므렸던 노랑어리연꽃 봉오리가 벌어져 노란 꽃을 피운다. 어미 오리가 여섯 마리 새끼를 데리고 다니며 먹이 찾는 법을 가르친다. 소금쟁이는 수면 위에 점점이 물결을 그린다.
이런 아침은 수천 년 가까이 반복됐겠지만, 잠시 멈춘 적도 있다. 1980년대에 합천댐이 생겨나며 늪 수위가 낮아지고 수질이 악화하면서다. 그러다 2007년경, 합천군과 군민들이 힘을 모아 5년에 걸쳐 늪을 정비했다. 머지않아 천연기념물이자 멸종위기 야생동물인 수달과 남생이, 고니까지 늪을 찾아왔다. 늪을 가로지르는 목조 보행로, 징검다리, 오솔길을 거닌다. 새소리, 벌레 울음소리와 함께 긁어대는 듯한 개구리 울음소리가 어딘가에서 들려온다. 늪의 마스코트인 멸종위기종 금개구리다. 녀석들은 울음주머니가 발달하지 않아 그런 특이한 소리로 운다.
I walk along a wooden walkway, stepping stones and paths crossing the wetland. Amid the calls of birds and insects, you might hear the distinctive croak of the endangered Korean golden frog. Tour guide Jeong Du-hyeon, known as the “Golden Frog Master,” points to the vegetation below. Staring intently at a leaf-like form, you can just make out the frog’s black eyes and gold-striped back. “Golden frogs are sluggish,” says Jeong. “The ones you see in the morning are often in the same spot in the afternoon. They’re easy prey and not great hunters, so they’re vulnerable. Without habitats like this, they might disappear.” Thanks to Jeong’s guidance, I spotted three that day. The greatest concern for those managing Jeongyang Wetland is ecological balance, leading them to regularly capture invasive species, like red-eared sliders that threaten the native turtle population. “Native species somehow remain resilient,” Jeong assures. “They’ll find a way to thrive.”
금개구리를 잘 찾아내 ‘금개구리 선생님’으로 불리는 정두현 해설사가 수초 아래쪽을 가리킨다. 나뭇잎처럼 생긴 형체를 뚫어져라 쳐다보자 검은 두 눈, 금색 두 줄을 새긴 등이 겨우 보인다. 평면 그림이 입체로 변신이라도 하듯 초록색 늪 위로 금개구리가 나타난다. “금개구리는 동작이 굼떠요. 아침에 본 녀석이 오후에도 같은 자리에 있곤 하죠. 쉽게 먹잇감이 되고, 사냥도 잘 못 해 걱정이에요. 이런 서식처가 없으면 사라질 가능성이 높아요.” 정두현 해설사의 도움으로 이날 금개구리를 세 마리나 발견했다. 그의 눈이 밝은 건 매일 정양늪에 나와서 여기저기 살피고 생태를 공부하는 덕분이다. 그의 핸드폰 사진첩은 초록빛 사진으로 가득하다. 그를 포함해 정양늪을 관리하는 이들의 가장 큰 걱정은 생태계 균형이다. 때문에 토종 남생이를 위협하는 붉은귀거북 같은 생태계교란생물을 수시로 포획하고 있다. 정두현 해설사는 말한다. “그래도 토종은 삶이 끈질기잖아요. 잘 살 거예요.”
The Correlation Between Meteorites and Onions
Leaving the wetland behind, I head toward the old town center where the Hapcheon-gun County Office and the bus terminal are located. Coincidentally, it’s market day at the five-day Wanghu Traditional Market. Though small, it offers freshly harvested onions, garlic and other vegetables grown by the vendors. Hapcheon is known for a variety of produce, forming the foundation for its signature dishes like pork and rice soup and mountain vegetable dishes.
운석과 양파의 상관관계
늪을 나서 합천군청과 버스터미널이 위치한 구도심으로 향한다. 마침 합천왕후시장에 오일장이 서는 날이다. 규모는 크지 않지만 제철이면 갓 수확한 양파, 마늘을 비롯해 상인들이 직접 재배한 채소를 만날 수 있다. 합천에서는 다양한 식자재가 나는데, 이는 시장에서 유래한 돼지국밥, 산채 요리 등 합천을 대표하는 음식들의 밑바탕을 이룬다.
Passing through peaceful villages and fields, I reach a geological landmark. From the paragliding launch site on Daeamsan Mountain, the Jeokjung-Chogye Basin unfolds below. For a long time, people wondered how this basin came to be. The enormous, bowl-shaped depression, spanning some 7km in diameter, lacks a river that typically flows through such basins. It wasn’t until 2020 that the mystery was solved. About 50,000 years ago, a meteorite approximately 200m in diameter struck this very spot. The Hapcheon Impact Crater is the only one of its kind in Korea and only the second to be discovered in East Asia.
잠든 듯 평화로운 마을과 들을 지나 이번에는 지질 명소를 찾아간다. 대암산 패러글라이딩 활공장에 오르자, 적중-초계분지가 모형처럼 내려다보인다. 뙤약볕 아래 사방이 산등성이로 둘러싸인 너른 평지에는 밭과 집이 빼곡하다. 오랫동안 사람들은 이 분지가 어떻게 생겨났는지 궁금해했다. 산이 많은 땅 한복판, 지름 약 7km에 달하는 이 거대한 그릇 모양 땅에는 보통 분지를 관통하기 마련인 하천도 없기 때문이다. 2020년에야 그 유래가 밝혀졌다. 5만여 년 전, 지름 약 200m의 운석이 이 자리에 충돌한 것이다. 합천운석충돌구는 우리나라에서 유일하며 동아시아에서 두 번째로 발견된 운석충돌구다.
Lee One-gil, president of the Hapcheon-gun County Chapter of the National Onion Producers Association, returned to farming here about seven years ago. He grows garlic, onions and lettuce in the meteorite crater’s soil. Hapcheon’s climate makes it ideal for growing onions. According to Lee, “Onions should be round and beautiful to taste good. Hapcheon onions harvested around June are firm and great for cooking.” Looking to discover more of Hapcheon’s natural scenery, I visit Gayasan National Park. Driving along the valley within the park, you enter a landscape celebrated for its beauty for over a millennium. It is said that Choe Chi-won, a brilliant scholar and poet, secluded himself here over a thousand years ago, becoming a hermit sage. Over centuries, numerous poets have sought to follow in his footsteps.
운석은 밭을 일구기 좋은 환경을 만들어냈다. 전국양파생산자협회 합천군 지회장 이원길은 약 7년 전 이곳으로 귀농했다. 운석충돌구에 위치한 밭에서 마늘, 양파, 양상추 등을 경작하는 그는 농부와 작물 사이에 궁합이 있는 것 같다고 말한다. “작물 중에서도 양파와 잘 맞아요. 보기만 해도 상태가 어떤지, 뭐가 필요한지 알 수 있거든요.” 그에 따르면 합천은 양파 시배지인 창녕군과 가깝고 기후가 적합해 양파가 잘 자란다. “양파는 모양이 둥글고 예쁜 게 맛있습니다. 출하 시기에 따라 맛이 달라지는데, 6월경 수확하는 합천 양파는 육질이 단단해 조리하기에 적합하죠.” 합천의 자연이 내는 또 다른 맛을 찾아 가야산국립공원으로 향한다. 국립공원에 진입해 계곡을 따라 차를 몬다. 예로부터 아름답기로 손꼽힌 이 산에는 1000년도 전에 천재적 학자이자 시인인 최치원이 은둔하다가 신선이 되었다는 이야기가 전해진다. 그의 자취를 좇는 문인들은 이후 수백 년에 걸쳐 이곳을 찾았다.
The beautiful surroundings praised by ancient poets are the source of Gayasan’s famous mountain vegetables. At Hyangwon Restaurant, one of several family-run establishments near Haeinsa Temple, enjoy a mountain vegetable set meal. Owner Bae Bup-sun humbly introduces each dish, filling the table with over 20 side dishes, mostly made from local ingredients using her mother’s recipes. “Chwinamul (edible wild green) varies in aroma depending on the region,” Bae explains. “Gayasan chwinamul has a unique scent you won’t find anywhere else in Korea.” Dining here is a window into her world. Stories about harvesting and cooking with ingredients from the mountains have become a narrative of life in Hapcheon.
고대 시인이 칭송한 깊은 자연은 가야산 명물인 산채 요리의 근원이 된다. 해인사 앞 치인리 신촌락에는 주민이 대를 이어 운영하는 식당이 여럿이다. 그중 50년 가까이 된 향원식당에서 산채 정식을 맛본다. 배법선 대표가 “촌에서 하는 볼품없는 음식”이라며 반찬을 하나둘 내오는데, 스무 가지가 넘어 어느새 테이블이 꽉 찬다. 대부분 가야산과 합천에서 난 재료를 사용해, 배 대표 어머니가 하던 방식 그대로 만들었다. 배 대표 가족이 평소 먹는 음식이기도 하다. 제철에만 맛볼 수 있다는 가야산 생취나물, 합천산 양파를 넉넉히 넣은 된장찌개 등 배 대표가 음식 하나하나를 설명해준다. 메뉴는 철마다, 또 손님의 국적에 따라 조금씩 바뀐다. “취나물은 지역마다 향이 다 달라요. 가야산 취나물은 향이 독특해요. 이런 맛은 국내 어디에도 없어요.” 배 대표의 이야기는 가야산 기슭에서 대를 이어 살아온 삶의 방식으로 이어진다. 머루, 달래, 으름, 약나무 등 산에서 나는 먹거리는 늘 넉넉했다. 어릴 적부터 당연하게 산에서 채취한 재료로 음식을 해 먹었으니, 이곳에서의 한 끼는 그녀 삶의 한 조각을 체험하는 것이기도 하다.
Day and Night on Summer Mountains
Azaleas, silver grass and the Milky Way — these seasonal sights from Hwangmaesan Mountain have become popular draws on Hapcheon travel itineraries. As the last rays of the afternoon sun fade, I drive to Hwangmaesan County Park. At 1,113m above sea level, Hwangmaesan straddles Sancheong and Hapcheon counties. The Hapcheon side of the mountain feels like an easy-to-navigate theme park.
After setting up camp at the forest campground, I meet Park Sang-yong, who oversees Hwangmaesan’s facilities. We ride electric carts to the ridgeline near the summit. The azalea fields and silver grass meadows beyond are bathed in summer’s green hues. Down below, the visitor center blends in naturally with its surroundings, nestled between the flower fields. In the 1980s, this area was a pasture where cattle and sheep grazed. After the pasture was abandoned, only the azaleas remained.
여름 산의 낮과 밤
철쭉, 억새 그리고 은하수. 계절마다 황매산에서 펼쳐지던 장면들은 요즘 합천에서 인기 있는 여행 콘텐츠가 됐다. 오후의 마지막 햇살 아래, 황매산군립공원으로 차를 몬다. 해발 1113m에 이르는 황매산은 산청과 합천에 걸쳐 있다. 합천 쪽 황매산은 마치 테마파크 같다. 사용자 친화적인 기획, 자연적인 색채와 단순성을 강조하는 미감을 전반적으로 적용해 산과 숙박 시설, 수목원, 안내 센터가 하나로 어우러진다. 그중 ‘철쭉과 억새 사이’ 관광 안내소는 대한민국 공간문화대상 대통령상을 비롯해 여러 차례 상을 받기도 했다.
숲속 야영장에 짐을 푼 뒤 황매산 시설 기획을 총괄한 박상용 주무관과 함께 전동카트를 타고 정상 부근 능선으로 오른다. 하늘과 맞닿은 고원 평야에서는 사방으로 시야가 탁 트인다. 철쭉 군락지와 그 너머 억새 군락지는 여름의 푸른빛으로 뒤덮였다. 봄의 분홍빛과 가을의 은빛 사이, 지금은 비교적 비수기에 해당한다. 여름 산을 한적하게 누릴 수 있다는 얘기다. 1km 넘는 무장애 길이 철쭉 군락지를 가로지르고, 노약자나 어린이는 전동카트로 길 입구까지 갈 수 있다. 저 아래쪽에 ‘철쭉과 억새사이’ 관광 안내소가 보인다. 이름대로 철쭉 군락지와 억새 군락지 사이에 웅크리듯 자리한 반달 형태 건물은 자연과 잘 어울린다.
이 독특한 풍광의 일부는 지난날 사람 손길이 닿은 결과이기도 하다. 1980년대에 이곳은 목장이었는데, 젖소와 양들이 독성을 지닌 철쭉은 남기고 풀만 뜯어 먹은 탓에 목장이 사라진 뒤에는 철쭉만 남게 되었다고 한다. 5월마다 열리는 황매산철쭉제는 지역민이 철쭉 필 무렵에 지내던 산신제에서 유래했다.
Before sunset, I descend from the ridgeline and visit the arboretum in front of the campground. The dense plant colonies and birch forest create a scenic view. Late at night, I leave the caravan and walk back up the ridgeline. In the darkness, I make out the farthest and faintest summit in the distance — Cheonwangbong Peak. Here, all romantic elements of a summer journey come together, with the Milky Way visible over the horizon like a fairy tale. Morning comes and I awake in my caravan, gazing out into summer in full bloom.
해가 지기 전, 능선에서 내려와 야영장 앞 수목원에 들른다. 자생식물 위주로 가급적 자연 상태를 그대로 보존한 채 수목원을 조성했다. 무성한 음지식물 군락지, 자작나무 숲 등 여러 구역이 펼쳐진다. 바람에 하늘거리는 솜털 같은 할미꽃을 한참 들여다본다. 7월 즈음이면 산수국을 비롯해 여름꽃들이 활짝 필 거라고 박상용 주무관이 설명한다. 한밤중에 캐러밴을 나서 황매산 능선을 다시 오른다. 겹겹이 어두운 산등성이 중 가장 멀고 희끗한 형체를 보며 저것이 지리산 천왕봉이리라 추측한다. 저 너머에서 또 누가 지금 밤하늘을 올려다보고 있을까? 이곳에는 우리가 상상하는 여름 여행의 낭만이 전부 있다. 개들도 잠든 밤, 산등성이 위로 동화처럼 떠오른 은하수, 캐러밴에서 눈을 뜬 아침, 창을 가득 채우는 여름의 푸르름.
Gayasan Sori-gil Trail This 6km hiking trail through Gayasan National Park has been renowned for its beauty since the Joseon Dynasty. The 2.5-hour trail starts near the Tripitaka Koreana theme park, passes Hongryudong Valley and Nongsanjeong Pavilion, where Silla-era scholar Choe Chi-won once stayed, and ends at Yeongsangyo Bridge. A short walk up the bridge will take you to Haeinsa Temple, which houses the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks, inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
가야산 소리길 조선시대부터 아름답기로 알려진 가야산국립공원을 걸어서 돌아볼 수 있는 탐방로다. 대략 2시간 30분 걸린다. 대장경테마파크에서 신라시대 학자 최치원이 머물렀다는 홍류동계곡과 농산정을 지나 영산교까지 총 6km 이어진다. 영산교에서 조금 더 걸어 올라가면 유네스코 세계기록유산인 팔만대장경이 보관된 해인사가 나온다.
Okjeon Tombs In the 1980s, ancient Gaya Confederacy tombs from the 4th to 6th centuries were first excavated along the Hwanggang River in eastern Hapcheon, drawing significant attention. It is estimated that there are over 1,000 tombs, including those yet to be unearthed. These tombs, part of the Gaya Tumuli, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Hapcheon Museum is located nearby, offering further insights into the ancient civilization.
합천 옥전고분군 1980년대, 합천 동쪽 황강 변에서 4~6세기 가야고분군이 처음 발굴되며 화제를 모았다. 발굴되지 않은 것까지 전체 고분군은 1000여 기에 이를 것으로 추정한다. 이곳을 포함한 가야고분군은 유네스코세계문화유산에 등재됐다. 고분과 함께 합천박물관이 자리한다.

Come summer, many restaurants put up signs announcing the seasonal availability of kongguksu (noodles in soybean broth). The texture, salt content and flavor of the soybean broth inevitably vary from one restaurant to another, prompting many diners to search for their favorite summer kongguksu each year, while others flock to well-known eateries with long queues. This year, even the Michelin-starred restaurant YUN Seoul attempts its take on the popular dish, serving freshly made pea noodles in broth made with white soybeans. But this begs the question: where do the beans that make or break kongguksu come from?
While soybeans are cultivated in various regions across Korea, Jangdan beans are a notable example associated with a specific locale. Jangdan beans aren’t a single type or variety of soybean but rather a term that encompasses a range of beans grown in the city of Paju. The bean typically used for kongguksu is the white soybean, also known as baektae, which includes varieties like yellow soybeans, meju beans and tofu beans. In addition to baektae, other types such as seoritae (black soybeans), yakkong (small beans), and seonbijabi beans with their distinctive half-black appearance are farmed in Paju, including the township of Jangdan.
더운 여름이면 많은 식당 한편에 안내문이 붙는다. 계절 메뉴인 콩국수가 준비됐음을 알리는 것이다. 국수를 말아 내는 콩국 혹은 콩물의 점도나 염도, 맛이 식당마다 다르기 때문에 취향에 맞는 콩국수를 매년 여름 찾아 헤매는 사람도 있고, 대중적으로 널리 알려져 끼니때마다 줄 세우는 식당을 찾아가는 사람도 있다. <미쉐린 가이드> 1스타를 받은 레스토랑 윤서울도 올해 직접 제면한 완두콩 국수에 백태로 만든 콩국에 올린 색다른 콩국수를 코스 메뉴 중 하나로 선보인다. 콩국수의 맛을 결정하는 큰 역할을 하는 것은 콩, 그 콩은 어디서 온 걸까.
국내 다양한 지역에서 콩을 재배하고 있지만, 지역명과 함께 이름이 널리 알려진 사례 중 하나는 파주 장단콩이다. 장단콩은 콩 종류나 품종의 이름이 아니다. 파주시에서 재배되는 다양한 품종의 콩을 통칭한다. 보통 콩국수에 많이 쓰이는 건 흰콩(노란콩), 메주콩, 두부콩 등 여러 가지 이름으로 불리는 백태다. 백태와 더불어 검은콩 중 하나인 서리태, 약콩으로도 불리는 쥐눈이콩, 검은색 반점이 특징인 선비잡이콩 등 다양한 종류의 콩이 장단면을 비롯한 파주시에서 재배되고, 모두 장단콩으로 부른다.
Paju’s Jangdan beans gained prominence and wider brand recognition in the 1990s when Paju City launched an initiative to promote the beans to stimulate the local economy. The beans are also uniquely appealing because they are primarily cultivated in an area near the border with North Korea, known as the Civilian Control Zone, where civilian access has been restricted since the Korean War (1950-1953). “Due to its long-standing cultivation under the name of its region, this particular soybean has gained higher recognition among the public compared to those from other areas. Additionally, its historical background, being presented to the kings during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), further contributes to its esteemed reputation,” says Chef Kim Do-yun of YUN Seoul, who has cooked with beans from all over the country. One notable bean variety from the Jangdan area, the Jangdan baekmok, was selected in 1913 as Korea’s first recommended soybean variety and thus widely cultivated across the areas around Gyeonggi-do Province. In 1969, it was crossbred to produce the gwanggyo variety. In May, the International Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity in Italy listed Jangdan baekmok in its “Ark of Tastes” catalog, a project started in 1996 to preserve the world’s culinary heritage and bring attention to foods at risk of disappearing. This listing aims to protect the legacy of Jangdan beans. Although Jangdan beans are available year-round, demand peaks in the fall. When the various bean varieties are harvested, Paju City hosts a festival to celebrate a bountiful harvest. This event, which began in 1997, takes place in locations like Imjingak Plaza and continues to this day.
다른 지역에 비해 파주 장단콩이 일찍이 브랜드처럼 사용될 수 있었던 것은 1990년대 즈음부터 지역 경제 활성화를 위해 파주시에서 장단콩 브랜드 육성 사업에 나섰기 때문이다. 게다가 콩이 재배되는 주요 지역이 한국전쟁 이후 민간인이 자유롭게 드나들 수 없는 민간인통제선(민통선) 안에 위치한 까닭에 많은 사람이 장단콩을 조금 더 특별하게 기억하는 것 같다. “한 지역의 이름을 따서 오래도록 재배하고 판매하다 보니 일반적으로 다른 지역의 콩에 비해 대중에게 인지도가 높아요. 과거 조선시대에 임금에게 진상된 콩이라는 역사적 배경도 한몫했죠." 전국의 다양한 콩을 접하고 요리해 본 윤서울 김도윤 셰프가 첨언한다.
장단 지역에서 나던 콩 중 장단백목이라는 품종은 1913년 국내 최초로 콩 장려 품종으로 선정되면서 경기도 지역에서 널리 재배하기 시작했고, 1969년 다른 품종과 교배해서 만든 광교를 비롯해 계속해서 새로운 품종을 개발하고 있다. 지난 5월 이탈리아에 위치한 국제슬로푸드생물다양성재단에서 이 장단백목을 ‘맛의 방주’에 등재했다. 기록을 통해 각국의 식재료나 음식 문화의 소멸을 막고 세계 음식에 대한 관심을 끌어내기 위해 1996년에 만들어진 프로젝트로, 파주시의 노력으로 장단콩의 시작이라 할 수 있는 장단백목을 지키기 위해 등재한 것이다. 1년 내내 장단콩을 구매할 수 있지만, 매년 가을 더 많이 찾는다. 다양한 품종의 장단콩 수확이 끝나면 파주시에서 축제를 연다. 1997년부터 임진각광장 등지에서 열리기 시작한 행사가 지금까지 이어진다.
Farmer Choi Jun-ho, who has been cultivating beans in Jangdan-myeon for generations, participates in the festival annually. He finds it an excellent opportunity to showcase his harvested beans to consumers, some of whom come to purchase beans for the entire year. “The sandy soil drains well, and the large temperature swings create an ideal environment for growing beans,” Choi explains. In May, farmers till the soil and plant the beans in fields within the Civilian Control Zone, which begin to sprout by mid-June and grow tall by mid-summer. The multiple uses of these beans can be seen throughout Paju, and Jangdankong Well-being Maru is the go-to place to experience all that Jangdan beans have to offer. It serves Jangdan bean gelato and parfaits featuring Jangdan bean paste. The café on the fourth floor provides a serene view of the sky and mountains, a peaceful respite from urban hustle and summer heat. Be sure to visit the first-floor market to purchase a diverse range of beans and bean products.
대를 이어 파주 장단면에서 콩을 재배하는 최준호 농부도 매년 축제에 참가한다. 1년 내내 먹을 콩을 구매하러 오는 손님이 있을 정도로, 수확한 콩을 소비자에게 알리기에 좋은 기회라고 한다. 민통선 안에 위치한 밭에서 5월에 땅을 갈고 콩을 뿌리면 6월 중순쯤부터 밭이 푸르르게 잎이 올라오고, 한여름엔 키가 높이 자란다. “모래가 섞인 토양이라 상대적으로 물이 잘 빠지고 일교차가 크다 보니 콩이 잘 자라기에 좋은 환경”이라고 최 농부는 설명한다.
이렇게 자라난 콩을 파주 곳곳에서 변화된 모습으로 만날 수 있다. 가장 손쉽게 콩의 모든 것을 경험할 수 있는 대표적인 곳은 파주장단콩웰빙마루다. 이곳 4층 해스밀래 카페에서 선보이는 빙수처럼 만들어진 항아리파르페는 여름 입맛을 당긴다. 은은하게 느껴지는 된장은 감칠맛을 더하며 고소한 콩 맛이 드러나는 얼음과 함께 온몸을 식힌다. 장단콩젤라또는 물론 콩 크림이 은은히 녹아 들어간 커피 음료도 주문할 수 있다. 노랑, 초록, 파란색 의자가 곳곳에 놓인 카페에서 멀리 내려다보이는 하늘과 산의 풍경은 도심의 복잡함과 더위마저 잊게 한다. 콩이 품은 향과 맛의 여운을 조금 더 이어가고 싶다면 1층 로컬푸드 농산물 직판장에서 장을 본다. 백태, 흑태, 청서리태, 선비잡이콩 등 호기심을 불러일으키는 다양한 콩을 종류별로 원하는 양만큼 구매할 수 있고, 콩으로 만든 음료나 제품 또한 구매할 수 있다. 파주에서 재배하는 다양한 채소도 구비되어 있어 콩과 함께 요리할 재료를 한 번에 준비할 수 있다.
Near the Unification Bridge, which separates the Civilian Control Zone, is the Saemtteul Tofu House restaurant, where a couple makes tofu and various dishes using beans harvested by their parents nearby. The tofu here is slightly firmer than at other restaurants. A specialty is the stew simmered with seafood broth, meat, mushrooms and tofu. Visitors can also enjoy a simple meal of pureed soybean stew. At the Jangdankong Saimdang Tofu Street Social Cooperative Customer Center, small groups can participate in tofu-making workshops. After the hands-on experience, explore the surrounding area. Most restaurants here feature at least one soybean dish on their menu. After enjoying a meal, stroll over to the nearby mural village.
어떤 요리를 집에서 만들지는 장단면의 식당을 방문하고 고민해보자. 민통선 안으로 들어가는 통일대교 근처에 위치한 샘뜰두부집에서는 부모님이 근처에서 수확한 콩으로 부부가 두부를 만들고 다양한 요리를 낸다. 다른 식당보다 조금 더 단단한 두부다. 해산물 육수에 고기, 버섯, 두부를 넣고 끓여낸 전골이 별미인데, 전골 안의 두부는 조금 더 부드럽게 음미할 수 있고 보양식으로도 훌륭하다. 간단한 식사로 비지찌개도 제공하고 여름에는 계절 메뉴인 콩국수도 준비한다.
두부를 콩으로 만든다는 건 알지만 실제로 어떤 과정을 거치는지 궁금하다면, 장단면에 온 김에 두부도 만들어보자. 동쪽으로 향해 법원읍에 이르면 두부 특화 거리인 '장단콩사임당두부거리'가 나온다. 이곳에 위치한 사회적 협동조합 고객 센터에서 소규모 인원도 두부 만들기 체험을 할 수 있다. 과정은 생각보다 쉽다. 물에 불린 콩을 맷돌로 갈아서 끓인 후 간수를 넣으면 응고되어 두부가 만들어진다. 응고된 하얀 덩어리를 건져내 바로 먹으면 순두부, 이를 사각 틀에 넣고 물기를 짜듯 눌러주면 모두부가 된다. 직접 만든 따끈한 두부는 집으로 가져갈 수 있다.
두부 체험이 끝난 후에는 주변 나들이를 나서보자. 두부 특화 거리다 보니 대부분의 식당이 적어도 하나의 콩 요리를 선보인다. 두부 체험장을 나설 땐 냉장고에 진열된 콩국을 챙기는 것도 잊지 말자. 근처에서 벽화 마을을 발견할 수 있는데, 알록달록한 그림이 가득한 동네를 걷는 동안 시원한 콩국이 땀을 식힌다.

Within the Civilian Control Zone, military vehicles are a common sight, and bean farmers must leave the area before 5 or 6 p.m. Consequently, most restaurants here open only for lunchtime. Paju Jangdankong Maeul offers hands-on experiences that include grinding soybeans to make tofu and witnessing the fermentation process that turns soybeans into paste and soy sauce. Due to needing prior application and approval for entering the Civilian Control Zone, most visitors come through group travel programs. This summer, take a trip up north and discover the rich flavors and traditions of this remarkable region.
조금 더 깊숙이 들어가야 하는 민통선 안 장단콩 산지에서 가장 신선한 콩 요리를 맛볼 수 있다. 군용 차량이 자주 보이는 민통선 안쪽에서는 콩 농사를 짓는 농부도 오후 5~6시 전에 바깥으로 나와야 한다. 그러다 보니 대부분의 식당 또한 점심시간 전후로만 영업한다. 초입에 위치한 파주 장단콩마을에서 전통 방식으로 두부를 만드는 체험과 더불어, 장독에서 콩 발효로 만들어지는 간장이나 된장을 시식하는 것도 가능하다. 바로 옆에 위치한 식당에서는 청국장, 된장찌개, 순두부 등을 한상 차림으로 낸다. 식사 후 건너 편 농산물직판장에 위치한 카페에선 콩가루의 고소함이 담뿍 묻어나는 아이스크림을 판다. 민통선 안쪽으로 들어갈 때는 사전에 신청하고 허가받는 과정이 필요하기 때문에 대부분은 단체 여행 프로그램을 통해서 방문한다. 파주시청이나 파주 장단콩마을에 문의하면 개인이 허가받는 과정도 안내해준다.
든든한 한 끼 식사로, 시원한 음료로, 달달한 디저트로 만나는 변화무쌍한 콩의 맛. 파주로 향하면 오색 콩의 고소함과 건강함이 가득한 여름을 만끽할 수 있다.

During an April 18 preopening event for Biennale Arte 2024, the mesmerizing sound of a daegeum (Korean bamboo flute) played by a performer wearing a hanbok (traditional Korean outfit) filled the outdoor garden of the Palazzo Malta – Ordine di Malta monastery. This performance by Seo Seung-mi directed the audience’s attention to an installation of Korean earthenware jars suspended from a tree, a reinterpretation of artist Hoon Kwak’s installation-performance Kalpa/Sound: What Marco Polo Left Behind for the inaugural Korean Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 1995. Seo’s performance marked the opening of Every Island is a Mountain — a special exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of Korea’s participation. Following this tribute to Kwak, musician Whee, choreographer Yanghee Lee and DJ Mang Esilo collaborated in an homage to the late Nam June Paik (1932-2006), who won the Golden Lion at the 1993 Biennale, representing the German Pavilion. Paik was instrumental in convincing the mayor of Venice to establish Korea’s Biennale Pavilion, suggesting it could help bring North and South Korea together through art.
2024 베니스비엔날레 프리뷰 행사가 한창이던 4월 18일 오후, 유서 깊은 중세 건축물인 몰타기사단 수도원의 야외 정원에 대금 선율이 울려 퍼졌다. 여러 개의 옹기를 이어 붙여 나무에 매단 설치작품 앞에 한복을 곱게 차려입고 앉은 여인은 국립국악원 최초 여성 대금 연주자이자 한국문화예술위원회 위원인 서승미다. 그녀는 1995년 베니스비엔날레 한국관 개막 전시에서 곽훈 작가가 선보였던 설치 퍼포먼스 작품 <겁/소리, 마르코 폴로가 가져오지 못한 것>을 재해석했다. 30년 전 같은 설치작품 앞에서 20명의 비구니가 김영동의 대금 연주와 함께 펼친 퍼포먼스는 큰 반향을 불러일으킨 바 있다. 내년에 건립 30주년을 맞이하는 한국관의 특별 전시 <모든 섬은 산이다> 개막 행사는 그렇게 포문을 열었다. 뒤이어 수도원의 중정에서는 백남준의 아카이브 영상을 배경으로 뮤지션 휘, 안무가 이양희, DJ 망 이실로 등이 다이내믹한 공연을 펼쳐 한국관 건립에 기여한 고 백남준을 오마주했다. 1993년 독일관 대표로 베니스비엔날레 황금사자상을 수상한 백남준이 베니스 시장에게 “마지막 남은 국가관을 한국에 준다면 남북 공동 첫 전시를 할 수 있다”고 제안한 결과 한국관이 지어질 수 있었다.
The anniversary exhibition, which runs until September 8, showcases the accumulated strength of contemporary Korean art and comprises 82 works by 36 artists and teams who participated in previous Korean Pavilion exhibitions. On the theme of the exhibition, Im Geun-hye, director of Arts Council Korea’s Arko Art Center, explains that it symbolizes “the connection of time and space through art. Just as islands are connected to underwater terrain and marine ecosystems like mountain ranges, isolated individuals’ lives and art are ultimately connected to historical and social contexts.” The opening attracted over 500 figures from the global art scene, including Korean artists Hoon Kwak, Kang Ik-joong, Kim Soo-ja and Koo Jeong A; overseas artists including Antony Gormley and Jean-Michel Othoniel; and influential representatives from the world’s leading galleries, such as the Serpentine and the Whitney Museum. The special exhibition also received the support of prominent Korean companies, including Korean Air and Hyundai Motor Company.

World’s Greatest Art Festival
Venice Biennale, which focuses on art and architecture in alternating years, is a world-renowned contemporary art festival. This year’s Biennale Arte, which officially opened on April 20, will run until November 24. Taking place across the city, the festival features a main exhibition, curated by the Biennale director Adriano Pedrosa; national pavilions organized by individual countries; and collateral events approved by the Biennale Foundation. The main exhibition is held in Giardini Park and the Arsenale, a former naval base and complex of shipyards, while the exhibitions by 87 national pavilions and 30 collateral events are spread throughout Venice.
세계 최고 권위의 미술 축제
아직 비엔날레가 생경한 이들에게 귀뜸하자면 이탈리아어로 ‘2년에 한 번 열리는 행사’를 의미하는 단어인 비엔날레의 기원이 바로 베니스비엔날레다. 미술전과 건축전이 매년 번갈아 열리며, 예술에 관심이 있는 사람이라면 일생에 한 번은 꼭 방문해볼 세계적인 현대미술 축제로 ‘예술계의 올림픽’이라는 별명으로 불리기도 한다. 올해는 4월 20일에 공식 개막하여 11월 24일까지 장장 7개월 동안 열리므로, 늦은 봄과 초겨울 사이에 유럽을 찾을 일이 있다면 부러 들러야 한다.

Beyond the official exhibitions, there are independent exhibitions by leading museums, galleries and art foundations from around the world. With a vaporetto (water bus) day pass, visitors can view the works of all the contemporary art masters in just a few days. This year, Biennale Director Adriano Pedrosa chose the thought-provoking Foreigners Everywhere as the overarching theme. The phrase comes from a series of neon signs translated into over 20 languages by the artist collective Claire Fontaine, who in turn were inspired by an anti-racist, anti-xenophobic group in Turin, Italy, during the early 2000s. Pedrosa, the Biennale’s first South American director, reflects, “No matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.”

The Central Pavilion, in Giardini Park, presents works by some 331 artists and collectives. Brazilian art collective MAHKU created a colorful mural of fish, birds and turtles for the facade. The images were inspired by myths from the areas around the Peru-Brazil border. Inside the main exhibition hall, visitors are greeted by the works of four Korean artists. The sculptures by Kim Yun Shin, an 89-year-old female Korean sculptor and “eternal outsider” in Argentina, express her unique connection to South American wood, a material she has worked with for over 40 years. Artist Kang Seung Lee’s large-scale installation Untitled (Constellation), composed of parchment drawings and gold thread embroidery, serves as a poignant tribute to LGBTQ+ individuals who have died from AIDS. Meanwhile, the Portraits section features the 1943 ink-and-wash painting Atelier by Chang Woosung (1912-2005) and the 1940s oil painting Self-Portrait in a Durumagi by Lee Qoede (1913-1965).
먼저 331명(팀)의 작가 작품이 전시된 자르디니 공원 안쪽 본전시관의 외벽이 눈길을 사로잡는다. 브라질 작가 그룹 마쿠가 페루와 브라질 국경 지역의 신화를 소재로 한 물고기, 새, 거북 등을 그려 넣은 벽화다. 알록달록한 색채와 강렬한 지역의 특색을 드러내며 방문객들의 발길을 멈추게 하는 벽화는 VIP 사전 관람 기간 내내 기념사진 촬영을 위한 포토 존 역할을 톡톡히 했다. 본전시관에서는 한국인 작가 4명을 소개했다. 회화가 벽면을 채운 전시장 한가운데 펼쳐진 김윤신 작가의 나무와 돌 조각은 관객의 마음을 빼앗는다. 1984년 아르헨티나로 이주, ‘영원한 이방인’으로 40여 년간 나뭇조각 작업을 해온 89세의 한국 1세대 여성 조각가 김윤신은 남미에서 자라는 나무 소재와 교감하며 자신만의 조형 언어를 압축한다. 성소수자의 삶과 잊힌 역사를 발굴하고 복원하는 작업을 이어온 이강승 작가의 작품은 긴 여운을 남긴다. 에이즈로 사망한 성소수자들을 양피지 그림과 금실 자수로 형상화해 애도하는 대규모 설치작품 <무제(별자리)>를 이번 전시에 선보였다. 월전 장우성(1912~2005년)의 1943년 수묵담채화 <화실>과 이쾌대(1913~1965년)의 1940년대 유화 <두루마기를 입은 자화상>은 20세기 작가의 초상화 100여 점을 한데 모은 ‘초상화’ 섹션에서 조우한다. “당시 한국의 예술가들이 소위 말하는 제3세계에 속해 있었기 때문”이라는 비엔날레 측의 설명은 K-팝 등 대중문화로 세계의 주목을 받고 있는 한국의 멀지 않은 과거를 돌아보게 한다.
Presence of Korean Artists Across Venice
At the Korean Pavilion, installation artist Koo Jeong A’s solo exhibition Odorama Cities invites audiences to explore scents, a recurring theme in Koo’s work since 1996. The term “Odorama” is a portmanteau of the words “odor” and “drama.” Last year, Koo conducted a survey on scent-related memories in Korea, gathering over 600 responses. From this, Koo created 16 scents.
Among the 30 collateral events, four spotlight the works of Korean artists. These include Madang: Where We Become Us, the 30th Anniversary Archive Exhibition of the Gwangju Biennale, the first European solo exhibition of Yoo Youngkuk (1916-2002), a solo exhibition by abstract artist Seundja Rhee (1918-2009) and Lee Bae’s solo exhibition Le Maison de La Lune Brûlée.
Korean artists have also gained attention recently through various independent exhibitions in Venice. The large-scale two-person exhibition Invisible Questions That Fill The Air, at Palazzo Loredan, features works by pioneering Korean experimental artist Seung-Taek Lee and American conceptual artist James Lee Byars (1932-1997). It’s garnered acclaim from critics and viewers alike. Despite having different nationalities and artistic styles and never having never met, the two artists — who were born in the same year — produced works that share an uncanny resemblance. This exhibition will continue until August 25.
구정아 작가의 한국관과 베니스 곳곳에서 열리는 한국 작가 전시
한국관에서는 설치미술가 구정아의 단독 개인전 <오도라마 시티>를 통해 전시장에 넘쳐나는 시각 경험 대신 후각으로 관객에게 다가간다. ‘오도라마’는 향을 의미하는 ‘오더(odor)’에 드라마(drama)의 ‘라마(-rama)’를 결합한 단어로, ‘향’은 1996년 이래 작가의 작업에서 반복적으로 등장하는 테마다. 구정아 작가는 지난해 6월에서 9월까지 전 세계에 흩어진 한국인들을 대상으로 ‘한국의 도시, 고향에 얽힌 향의 기억’에 대한 설문조사를 진행해 사연 600여 편을 수집한 후 20개의 키워드로 한국의 시대상을 담은 16개의 향을 만들었다.
병행 전시 30건 중 4건은 한국 작가가 주인공이다. 올해 창설 30주년을 맞은 광주비엔날레의 아카이브 특별전 <마당: 우리가 되는 곳>을 비롯해 한국 추상미술의 선구자인 유영국(1916~2002년)의 첫 유럽 개인전, 프랑스를 중심으로 활동한 여성 추상미술 작가 이성자(1918~2009년)의 개인전과 숯의 작가 이배의 <달집 태우기> 개인전이 열린다.
자유 전시에서도 한국 작가들이 이목을 끌었다. 특히 팔라초 로레단에서 열린 한국 실험미술 선구자 이승택과 미국 개념 미술가 제임스 리 바이어스의 대규모 2인전 <공기를 채운 보이지 않은 질문들>은 수준 높은 전시로 평론가와 관람객의 호평을 받았다. 놀랍게도, 국적도 표현 방식도 다른, 서로 만난 적 없는 노장들의 작품은 기이할 정도로 닮아 있다. 그들의 공통 관심사인 물질과 비물질, 퍼포먼스, 문학, 천상과 달, 바람과 숨결 등을 반영한 전시는 8월 25일까지 계속된다.

This action comedy is based on a true story from 2016 in which an ordinary citizen helped to catch the leader of a voice phishing ring. Director and writer Park Young-ju, who has been garnering attention in the Korean movie industry, made her commercial film debut with Citzen of a Kind. She wrote the screenplay with actress Ra Mi-ran in mind for the leading role, and Park’s faith was rewarded as Ra perfectly portrays the highly driven character of Deok-hee. The film is rounded out by the splendid supporting roles of Deok-hee’s friends played by Yeom Hye-ran, Jang Yoon-ju and Ahn Eun-jin.
After being tricked into losing her life savings through voice phishing, Deok-hee receives a call from the criminal who scammed her, who now pleads for help. Deok-hee heads to Qingdao, China along with her friends to save the man and get her money back. Through this film, Park has said that she hoped to change the public’s sometimes humorous perception of voice phishing. As such, the scenes shot in Qingdao take on a noticeably darker and more somber tone, and the gravity of the voice phishing crimes is brought to the fore.

With many walking trails, you can stroll through a century-old pine forest, walk along unique rock formations and cross the bridge to Daewangam Rock. Feel the refreshing sea breeze as you take in the stunning scenery.

On May 14, Korean Air was awarded the top prize in the Best Airline Onboard Menu category for its First Class cabin in the 2024 Leisure Lifestyle Awards, presented by the renowned travel magazine Global Traveler. The award is a recognition of Korean Air’s exceptional First Class menu, which includes such dishes as bibimbap, galbijjim (braised beef short ribs), Chilean sea bass and sirloin steak. This marks the second time that Korean Air has been honored in the in-flight meal category, having won the Best Airline Cuisine award from the same publication in December last year.
Since 2004, the monthly magazine has focused on the interests and lifestyles of U.S.-based travelers. Today, it boasts over 810,000 readers worldwide. It conducts annual surveys of its online and offline subscribers, using the results to rank airlines and travel-related companies in various categories. The reliability of the rankings is enhanced by the fact that they are based on feedback from customers who have directly experienced the services.
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of its in-flight dining, Korean Air has launched several initiatives. Reflecting the growing trend of plant-based dining, the airline launched vegan options based on traditional Korean dishes early last year. A preorder meal service for Prestige Class passengers has also been introduced. Korean Air has also collaborated with Marc Almert, one of the youngest champions of the World’s Best Sommelier competition, organized by the International Sommelier Association. Almert selected over 50 new wines for the airline.

With a year-round Mediterranean climate, rich historical heritage, beautiful beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, and delicious food and wine cultivated from its soil, Portugal is a globally popular travel destination. In the capital, Lisbon, visitors can enjoy leisure activities and sightseeing, thanks to its stunning coastal scenery, UNESCO World Heritage sites and historic neighborhoods. Discover the charm of Lisbon through attractions like the Jerónimos Monastery, in the Belém district where Catholic monks are said to have invented egg tarts, and tram tours that offer glimpses of historic quarters. Meanwhile, the city of Porto, famous for its port wine, is less than four hours north of Lisbon by train.
From September 11 to October 25, Korean Air will operate regular charter flights to Lisbon. The Incheon-to-Lisbon flight KE921 and the return flight KE922 will operate three times weekly, on a Boeing 787-9 aircraft accommodating 269 passengers. Departures are scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Previously, travelers from Korea had to transfer to a new flight in nearby countries like France or Spain or else rely on overland travel. However, Korean Air’s new service promises to significantly enhance the experience of flying to Lisbon. After the initial period finishes at the end of October, Korean Air plans to continue the service into the winter season.
