용들이 노니는 구릉, 용유지는 한국에서 꽃이 이루는 장관으로 이름 높다. 저수지를 에워싼 얕고 둥근 구릉에는 메타세쿼이아, 편백, 왕버들, 벚나무가 신록을 뽐낸다. 미풍도 일지 않는 따뜻한 봄날엔 저수지의 잔잔한 수면 위로 꽃물 오른 경치가 유화처럼 떠오르는 풍경과 마주할 수 있다.
Said to be the hills where dragons play, the Yongyuji Reservoir area is famous in Korea for its spectacular floral scenery. The verdant green metasequoia, cypress, willow and birch trees show off their colors in the low, rounded hills around the reservoir. On a warm spring day when the air is still, you might mistake the view of flowers rising above the calm surface of the reservoir for an oil painting.

유럽의 봄을 알리는 꽃의 향연, 쾨켄호프
올해로 73회를 맞은 유럽 최대의 꽃 축제인 쾨켄호프가 3월 24일부터 5월 15일까지 개최된다. 쾨켄호프는 매년 네덜란드 암스테르담 근교 도시 리서에 위치한, 세계에서 가장 큰 꽃 공원인 쾨켄호프 공원에서 열린다. 쾨켄호프는 해마다 다른 주제로 축제를 선보이는데, 올해의 주제는 ‘플라워 클래식’이다. 수 세기 동안 우리 삶의 일부이자 예술, 건축 및 디자인의 고전적 상징으로 활용되어온 꽃의 의미를 조명할 예정이다. 만개한 튤립을 보고 싶다면 4월 중순 이후 방문할 것을 추천한다.
Flower Festival in Keukenhof
Keukenhof, the site of the world’s most iconic tulip festival, will be open from March 24 to May 15. The largest flower park on Earth, Keukenhof is located in Lisse, a city near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The daffodils and hyacinths bloom in March, and the best time to see the tulips in full bloom is in late April. This year’s theme at Keukenhof is “flower classics” — a celebration of flowers that have served as symbols of art, architecture and design for centuries. 2005년 독일 베를린에서 처음 시작한 베를린 갤러리 위켄드는 세계 예술계에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 행사로 매년 봄 전 세계 미술 애호가들을 불러 모은다.
약 50개 갤러리에서 미술계의 유명 중견작가와 흥미로운 신예 작가의 작품을 소개하는 베를린 갤러리 위켄드는 올해 4월 29일부터 5월 1일까지 열릴 예정. 올해는 콘라트 피셔 갤러리의 전시가 애호가들의 기대를 한 몸에 받고 있다.

Founded in 2005 in Berlin, Germany, the annual Gallery Weekend Berlin has long been an established part of the international art calendar, drawing art enthusiasts from around the world each spring. The event, which runs from April 29 to May 1 this year, will showcase work from established stars of the art world as well as exciting emerging artists. Certain to gain attention is this year’s exhibition at the Konrad Fischer Galerie, which will feature the work of prolific media artist Bruce Nauman.
With more than 50 years of work under his belt, the artist produces everything from video art to installation art. The Barbara Wien gallery will show the work of Haegue Yang, who creates otherworldly sculptures and installations.

사막으로 돌아온 코첼라, 코첼라 밸리 뮤직 & 아트 페스티벌
팬데믹으로 인한 연이은 취소 소식으로 전 세계 음악 팬을 아쉽게 했던 코첼라 밸리 뮤직 & 아트 페스티벌이 드디어 2년 만에 돌아온다. 올해는 4월 15일부터 17일, 4월 22일부터 24일까지 총 6일간 진행된다. 헤드 라이너는 ‘Ye’로 개명한 카녜이 웨스트를 비롯해 해리 스타일스, 빌리 아일리시가 맡았으며, 한국 아티스트로는 에픽하이, 페기 구가 참가한다. ‘뮤직 & 아트’ 페스티벌이라는 이름에 걸맞게 팜스프링스의 크리스토퍼 치초키, 네덜란드의 키키 반에이크 등 다양한 아티스트와 협업한 무대 및 설치작품도 만나볼 수 있다.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which has disappointed music fans around the world with consecutive cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has finally returned. This year’s festival, held at Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California, the U.S., will run from April 15 to 17 and April 22 to 24. The headliners are Kanye West (who changed his name to Ye last year), Harry Styles and Billie Eilish, with Korean artists Epik High and Peggy Gou also participating. Among the creatives invited to create installations for the event are Palm Springs artist Christopher Cichocki and Dutch designer Kiki Van Eijk. Aside from watching the performances and dining at food trucks, visitors will be able to ride a Ferris wheel, shop for vinyl records and experience a night or two in a yurt or even a luxurious safari tent.

장미셸 바스키아 뉴욕 전시회 오픈
아티스트 장미셸 바스키아의 <장미셸 바스키아: 킹 플레저>전이 4월 9일부터 미국 뉴욕의 스타럿 리하이 빌딩에서 열린다.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Exhibition
Opening on April 9 in New York City is the hotly anticipated exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure ©. To be held at the landmark Starrett-Lehigh Building, the exhibition will feature more than 200 paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations and artifacts which have never or rarely been shown before. As such, the show will offer fresh insights into the life and work of the iconic artist. Organized and curated by Basquiat’s family and designed by internationally acclaimed architect Sir David Adjaye OBE, the exhibition will include a recreation of the artist’s Great Jones Street studio and childhood home, where visitors will be able to peruse his sketchbooks. M+ Museum
Hong Kong’s art landscape is changing. If the Central District — famous for its old town, regenerative architecture and unique galleries scattered in between — was the former home base of the arts, the West Kowloon Cultural District is now ready to serve as its center. At the forefront of this change is the newly opened M+ Museum. Located on land reclaimed from Victoria Harbour, the museum purports to be Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture.

난징 수직 숲
전체가 관목을 포함한 푸른 나무로 뒤덮인 수직 숲 빌딩이 난징에 완공된다. 설계는 지난 2014년 이탈리아 밀라노에 수직 숲 빌딩 ‘보스코 베르티칼레’를 지어 건축과 자연의 공생 가능성을 선보인 이탈리아 건축가 스테파노 보에리가 맡았다. 난징 수직 숲에는 4500m2 넓이에 27종의 식물, 관목을 포함한 600그루의 나무가 배치될 예정이다. 건축 관계자들은 난징 수직 숲이 연간 최대 16.5톤의 산소를 생산해 지역 탄소 배출량 18톤을 줄일 것으로 보고 있다.
Nanjing Vertical Forest
The Vertical Forest building, covered entirely with green trees and shrubs, will soon be completed in Nanjing. The building was designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri, the creator of the Vertical Forest building Bosco Verticale, a Milanese landmark that’s covered with 20,000 plants. Asia’s first Vertical Forest will contain 27 species of plants, including trees and shrubs, on an area of 4,500m2. The Nanjing Vertical Forest will produce up to 16.5 tons of oxygen per year and help reduce local carbon emissions by 18 tons. The building’s two towers will house a museum, offices and a hotel.

제주도 우도에 오스트리아의 세계적인 건축가이자 화가인 훈데르트바서를 테마로 한 훈데르트바서파크가 들어선다. 훈데르트바서가 기획한 디자인을 실제 건축물로 탄생시켰던 건축가 하인즈 스프링맨이 파크 전체 설계부터 타일 마감까지 직접 참여했다. 특히 건물을 지을 때 베어지는 수목을 최소화하기 위해 그 자리에 자생하던 수목들을 건물 옥상에 옮겨 심는 훈데르트바서의 ‘나무 세입자’ 철학을 파크 내 건축물에 적용해 거대한 자연주의 예술 작품으로 탄생시켰다. 파크는 작품들을 관람할 수 있는 ‘훈데르트바서뮤지엄’, 지중해풍 콘도미니엄 ‘훈데르트힐즈’, 우도의 바다를 두 눈에 담을 수 있는 카페 ‘훈데르트윈즈’로 구성된다.
Hundertwasser Park Grand Opening
Now open on Udo Island, off the east coast of Jeju Island, is Hundertwasser Memorial Park, which is dedicated to Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a world-renowned Austrian architect, environmental activist and visual artist. Hundertwasser opposed the use of straight lines in painting and created powerful and brilliant masterpieces. As an architect, he was able to incorporate nature into his urban creations. Architect Heinz Springman, who planned and implemented designs by Hundertwasser, was in charge of the park’s construction. In order to minimize the number of trees cut down in the process, displaced trees were relocated to the roofs of the various buildings going up at the time.

Singapore and South Korea have an established Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), meaning that vaccinated travelers arriving from South Korea are able to enjoy a quarantine-free travel experience (as of February 2022). In Singapore, past, present and future are all blended together, and it’s easy to find pockets of nature. New travel-worthy spots have opened up recently, joining the ranks of Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, Singapore’s major tourist attractions.

The Tropical Montane Orchidetum, a newly established part of the National Orchid Garden, is quickly becoming a must-visit spot. It comprises three exhibition halls and features a variety of plants, in addition to orchids. Asia’s largest orchid exhibition hall, the Tropical Montane Ochidetum, makes for an exotic experience.

The Museum of Ice Cream (MOIC), which opened in August 2021, is a sweet space reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. It joins previously established locations in major U.S. cities, including New York and Los Angeles. The museum, located near Dempsey Hill, is hard to miss — just look for the pink building. A range of interactive exhibits provide fun experiences, stimulating the imagination and creativity of museum visitors. One popular place to take photos is MOIC’s colorful Sprinkle Pool.

At Sentosa, a resort in the south of Singapore, tourists can enjoy all sorts of attractions, from thrilling amusement park rides to relaxing tropical beaches. SkyHelix Sentosa, which opened in December 2021, is Singapore’s highest outdoor amusement park ride. Here, you can enjoy a cool beverage while rocking gently in a gondola. The ride lasts for 12 minutes and offers great views.

Tourism Australia recently released a list of hot travel destinations, and thanks to the Vaccinated Travel Lane between South Korea and Australia, vaccinated travelers arriving from Korea can enjoy a quarantine-free travel experience (as of February 2022). The new Sydney Culture Trails wind past plenty of cultural and gastronomic attractions. Travelers can access each trail through Google Maps via the official Sydney tourism website.

The Darling Harbor trail stretches from Chinatown to Pyrmont Bay and features an internationally diverse set of attractions. The trail takes you past the National Maritime Museum, the Powerhouse Museum, the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium and the Capitol Theater, which hosts world-class musicals as well as ballet and opera performances. It also winds through Chinatown and past nearby Korean and Thai shops.

시드니왕립식물원 문화 산책로는 1827년 설립된 호주 최초의 박물관인 호주 박물관부터 호주의 첫 정부 청사를 개조해 만든 시드니 박물관, 지난해 개관 150주년을 맞이한 뉴사우스웨일스 미술관까지 시드니의 역사를 간직한 문화적 명소로 빼곡하다. 현재 뉴사우스웨일스 미술관은 갤러리 공간을 2배로 확장하기 위해 새로운 건물인 ‘시드니 모던 프로젝트’ 공사를 진행 중이며, 올해 말 개장 예정.
This walk is full of cultural attractions that are tied to Sydney’s history. These include the Australian Museum, founded in 1827, and the Museum of Sydney. Be sure to make time for a stop at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. Currently under construction at the AGNSW is the Sydney Modern Project, which will double the amount of floor space.

항구를 따라 이어지는 더 록스 문화 산책로에서 특히 놓치지 말아야 할 명소를 꼽는다면 현대미술관과 바랑가루. 아르데코 양식의 건물이 눈길을 끄는 현대미술관에서는 호주뿐만 아니라 전 세계의 현대 미술품을 두루 소개한다. 바랑가루는 컨테이너 터미널이었던 시드니의 오래된 산업지역을 도시재생 프로젝트를 통해 재탄생시킨 장소로, 레스토랑, 공원, 6성급 호텔 등 여행자에게 매력적인 공간들이 촘촘히 자리하고 있다. 물가를 거닐다 보면 나타나는 바랑가루 하우스에서는 아름다운 항구 전망을 만끽하며 미식을 즐길 수 있다.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia — part of the Rocks trail, which runs along the port — is not to be missed. The museum is housed in an art deco-style building and features contemporary art created by artists from Australia and other countries. Further along the trail, Barangaroo is a revamped urban area that used to be a container terminal. The neighborhood features restaurants, parks and six-star hotels. You can enjoy gourmet food while admiring the beautiful view of the port at Barangaroo House restaurant.

차우착윙 박물관에서 캐리지웍스로 이어지는 치펜데일 문화 산책로에서는 특색 있는 문화공간을 만나볼 수 있다. 지난 2020년 시드니대학교 안에 개관한 차우착윙 박물관은 미라와 같은 고대 유물부터 현대 작품에 이르기까지 광범위한 컬렉션을 자랑한다. 1800년대 철도 작업장이었던 곳에 위치한 캐리지웍스는 호주 최대 규모의 복합 문화 구역으로서, 전시, 축제, 박람회 공간으로 활용되며 주로 실험적인 현대미술과 공연예술을 소개한다. 매주 토요일 오전 8시부터 오후 1시까지 열리는 파머스 마켓도 이곳의 빼놓을 수 없는 즐길 거리다.
The Chippendale trail is a culturally rich walking experience that extends from the Chau Chak Wing Museum to Carriageworks. The Chau Chak Wing Museum, which opened at the University of Sydney in 2020, boasts a wide collection of artifacts — think everything from ancient mummies to modern art. Carriageworks, a railroad workshop in the 1800s, now serves as a space for festivals, fairs and exhibitions — mainly featuring experimental and performance art. Don’t miss the farmers market held there from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday.

1880년대부터 1930년대까지는 기차 여행의 황금기였다. 이 시기에 대륙을 가로질러 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 거대한 철도 노선이 만들어졌고, 1890년대에는 파리에서 이스탄불(당시 콘스탄티노폴리스)까지 3219km에 달하는 오리엔트 특급열차가 벨벳으로 장식된 객실과 고급 프랑스 요리, 24시간 서비스를 제공하며 운행되었다. 안타깝게도 이러한 대륙 횡단 노선 대부분이 제2차세계대전으로 인해 파괴되거나 20세기에 자동차와 항공 여행이 붐을 이루면서 중단되었다. 그런데 오늘날 지속 가능성과 느린 여행에 대한 관심이 높아지면서, 다시 기차 여행의 르네상스가 도래하고 있다.
During the golden age of train travel, from the 1880s to 1930s, great rail routes carved their way across the continents. These included the legendary Orient Express, which in its 1890s glory days rolled all the way from Paris to Istanbul (then Constantinople), outfitted with such luxuries as 24-hour service, velvet-trimmed carriages and French cuisine. Sadly, many of these epic routes were broken up during the two World Wars, or fell into disuse as car and air travel boomed in the 20th century. But now a growing interest in sustainability and slow travel is leading to a new heyday for rail travel.

According to a recent Artnet Intelligence Report, Seoul is one of seven cities expected to lead the global art market over the next decade. ‘서울’을 선택한 이유
서울은 훌륭한 아티스트, 갤러리, 미술관 및 컬렉션 이외에도 음악, 디자인, 영화, 패션, 건축 등 모든 장르의 예술에 관심이 많은 청중의 도시다. 그런 이유로 아시아에서의 기회를 살펴보는 동안 자연스럽게 서울을 생각하게 되었다. 20년이 넘는 기간 동안 현대미술의 발전에 이바지하며 관람객들과의 소통에 중요한 역할을 해온 키아프와 협력하게 된 것은 매우 적합한 선택이라고 생각한다. 오는 9월, 프리즈는 전 세계의 갤러리, 기관, 큐레이터, 아트 컬렉터를 서울로 불러 모으며 서울이 활기찬 예술의 현장, 주목할 만한 미술의 중심 도시라는 걸 알리는 특별한 일주일을 만들 것이다.
The Appeal of Seoul
Frieze has been looking into opportunities in Asia for some time, and when the chance to work with Korea International Art Fair (KIAF) arose, it immediately seemed like the right fit. KIAF has been around for over 20 years and has played a crucial role in building a Korean audience for contemporary art. Frieze will look to bring a global audience of galleries, institutions, curators and collectors. Seoul obviously stood out as a dynamic city with a sophisticated, inquisitive audience. There are obviously some attractive business policies related to art that are currently in place here in Korea, but these are secondary in importance to Seoul’s role as a cultural center.
‘프리즈 서울’의 계획
우선 프리즈는 키아프와 같은 기간에 열리지만 각각 독립적인 페어로 운영한다. 그러나 궁극적으로 페어를 통해 서로를 참고하며 배울 수 있는 기회를 갖게 될 것이라 기대한다. 런던, 뉴욕, LA 3개의 도시에서 진행해온 프리즈는 각 도시마다 고유의 지역색을 반영한 서로 다른 성격을 갖고 있으며, 현대미술을 다루는 프리즈 런던과 고대부터 현대미술까지 아우르는 프리즈 마스터즈 프로그램을 유지하고 있다. 프리즈 서울은 아시아로 진출한 첫 아트페어인 만큼 아시아 갤러리들의 특색을 드러낼 수 있는 아시아 갤러리와 이머징 갤러리 전용 섹션인 ‘포커스 아시아’를 마련했으며, 이는 모든 레벨의 시장을 지원하려는 프리즈의 의도를 잘 담아내고 있다고 생각한다. 또한 프리즈 아트페어라는 고유의 성격과 서울의 도시적 특색을 결합하여 독자적인 아이덴티티를 구축해나갈 예정이다. 다른 도시에서처럼 프리즈 서울을 진행하는 동안 미술과 함께 전반적인 문화예술을 경험할 수 있는 ‘프리즈 워크’ 프로그램을 진행한다.

Opportunities to Learn and Improve
Frieze London and Frieze Masters have developed their own character over time. Under the Frieze umbrella, Frieze Seoul will develop its own identity. Frieze Week programming will be an important part of the Seoul fair, and we look forward to collaborating with an array of partners to celebrate the cultural landscape of the city. We expect the fair to develop naturally and organically, improving upon the inaugural edition and continuing to create new opportunities and cultural experiences.
Frieze will take place alongside KIAF but will be run independently. Each fair has its own identity. By collaborating, though, we will benefit both by reaching more people and by sharing resources and know-how.

Q. 소장하고 있는 컬렉팅 작품의 규모, 가장 최근에 소장하게 된 작품은 무엇인가?
2022년 1월을 기준으로 약 200여 점 정도 된다. 가장 최근에 소장한 작품은 지난 1월 말까지 원앤제이 갤러리에서 개인전 <옐로우 블루스_>를 가진 윤지영 작가의 조각이다. 전시장에서 처음 봤을 때 불가해한 물체라는 생각이 들었고 지금도 정확히 어떤 의미를 지닌 건지 잘 모르겠는데, 그 ‘이해되지 않음’이 매력적이었다.
Q. How many pieces are in your art collection, and what’s your most recent addition?
As of January 2022, I have around 200 pieces. The most recent addition is a sculpture by Ji-young Yoon, an artist who held her solo exhibition Yellow Blues_ at One and J Gallery that same month. It struck me as such a mysterious piece the moment I spotted it in the exhibition hall, and I still haven’t figured out exactly what it means. But that unintelligibility is what I like about it.
Q. 가장 선호하는 작품 구매 방법 혹은 경로는?
주로 옥션보다는 갤러리에서 작품을 구매한다. 역사 속 훌륭한 작가들은 대부분 좋은 갤러리스트들을 동료로 두었다. 로이 리히텐슈타인, 사이 톰블리가 누구를 만나서 자신의 한계를 넘어선 대가가 되었는지 생각해보라. 바로 갤러리스트였다. 작가가 보지 못하는 시선을 갤러리스트들은 갖고 있다.
물론 작가들은 세상 모두가 보지 못하는 것을 본다. 그래서 그 둘은 좋은 팀을 이룬다. 미술시장에서 작가가 건강하게 성장하기 위해서는 좋은 갤러리스트가 있어야 하고 그런 의미로 내가 갤러리에서 작품을 구매하는 것이 미술 생태계에 일조하기를 바란다.
Q. How do you usually prefer to go about purchasing an art piece?
I usually buy from galleries rather than auctions. Many of history’s greatest artists had close relationships with gallerists. Think of Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly, who furthered their careers through meeting gallerists. Gallerists have different perspectives from artists. Of course, artists are often able to see things that the average person cannot, but for artists to grow within the art industry, they need a good gallerist. In that sense, I like to think that purchasing art pieces from galleries contributes to the health of the art ecosystem.
Q. 수집에는 리서치가 선행되어야 한다. 당신의 리서치 스타일은?
리서치하는 시간이나 스타일 등을 콕 짚어 말할 수 없는 게, 매일 국내외의 현대미술 칼럼과 책들을 온 집 안에 늘어놓고 살아간다. 의무 때문이 아니라 그것이 좋아하는 일이고 탐구 법이기 때문이다. 그리고 ‘덕후’에 가까운 일상을 보낸다. 새로 발견한 작가, 좋아하는 작가 얘기가 나오면 끝없이 찾아보며 밤을 새우는 일도 허다하다.
Q. It is said that thorough research is needed before buying art. What is your research style?
I don’t set aside time for research nor do I have a specific research style. I read art columns from all over and collect art books. It’s not a duty, but a hobby, and a kind of exploration. I’m a bit of a geek — when I discover or hear about new artists that appeal to me, I’ll often stay up all night searching for information about them.
Q. 현재 한국미술 생태계에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는가?
미술시장의 주인은 작가라고 생각한다. 작가가 있어야 모든 것들이 돌아간다. 하지만 주인이 살 집을 만들고, 주인과 대화하는 것은 갤러리나 미술관, 컬렉터와 비평가들이다. 미술시장의 폭발적인 호황이 문제점을 양산하기도 하지만 나는 긍정적으로 본다. 그간 시장이 너무 작지 않았나? 일단 (시장의 규모를) 키우자. 큰 집으로 이사 하면서 어떻게 정리하고 꾸밀지 고심하고 실천에 옮기자.
Q. What are your thoughts on the current ecosystem of the Korean art world?
It is my belief that artists set the direction of the art market. There have to be artists for anything to work. However, the art galleries, the collectors and the critics build the metaphorical house for these leaders to live in, and thereby communicate with them. Sudden booms in the art market bring about their own problems, but, overall, I see it in a positive way. The market was once too small, don’t you think? I want us to expand it. Once it’s larger — once we’ve moved into a bigger house — then we can think about organizing and decorating it.
Q. 좋은 컬렉터의 역할이란 무엇이라고 생각하는가?
컬렉터들은 좋아하는 작가를 응원하는 치어리더 군단이라고 생각한다. 그저 응원하는 것이 좋은 사람들. 좋아하는 축구팀이 진다고 그 팀을 응원하지 않는 팬은 없지 않을까? 난 내가 좋아하는 수많은 작가들의 치어리더다. 무엇을 좋아하는 마음은 쓸수록 커지기에 끝없이 좋아하는 작가들이 생겨나고, 그래서 응원해야 할 대상도 늘어난다.
Q. What do you think the role of a good collector is?
I see collectors as being like cheerleaders for their favorite artists. They are good people who are there to lend support, just like a soccer fan who stands by a favorite team when they lose. I’m a cheerleader for many of my favorite artists. The more one supports the people or the things that they like, the more the instinct to do so grows. I find myself supporting more and more artists.
Q. 올해 예정된 아트 이벤트 가운데 특히 기대하는 것은?
한국 아트 신은 코로나19 이후 세계적으로 한층 주목받게 된 시장이 아닌가 싶다. 그 현상의 하이라이트가 될 프리즈 아트페어를 가장 기대하고 있다. 더불어 올해 2회를 맞는 <더프리뷰 한남>에서 만나게 될 신생 전시 공간들과 신진 작가들의 작품도 무척이나 궁금하다. 작가들의 개인전을 우연히 보게 됐는데 예상하지 못했던 매력이나 감동을 받을 때 컬렉팅으로 이어지는 경우가 많기 때문이다.
Q. Are there any art events that you’re looking forward to this year?
I think, post-COVID, the Korean art scene will gather more global attention than ever before. I’m most looking forward to the Frieze Art Fair, which is the main highlight of the year. I’m also curious about the work of up-and-coming artists that will be exhibited at The Preview, Hannam, which is celebrating its second anniversary this year. I also often come across solo exhibitions by chance and find myself impressed or moved by various pieces, and I buy them without having planned to.

테크놀로지와 결합한 예술에 대한 관심이 높아지는 요즘, 한국 아트 신에도 이 흐름을 주도하는 아티스트가 있다. 지난해 코엑스 광장의 초대형 사이니지에 거대한 파도를 몰고 온 에이스트릭트의 <Wave>가 대표적인 예. 디지털 디자인 그룹 디스트릭트가 만든 미디어 아티스트 유닛으로, 뉴욕 타임스스퀘어 광장 중심의 전광판에 역동적으로 춤추는 고래 <Whale #2>를 띄운 데 이어 최근 런던에서 열린 전시 <빛, 현대미술의 새 물결>에서 <Starry Beach>를 선보이며 세계의 이목을 끌고 있다.
Interest in immersive and interactive media art is on the rise, and a set of Korean artists is leading this movement. One of the most prominent examples is a’strict, an art-focused branch of digital media design company d’strict. The digital installation Wave, by a’strict, showed giant waves crashing against the front of an enormous screen at COEX Plaza, Seoul.
사운드 미디어 아트스트 후니다 킴도 주목할 만한 이름. 첨단기술과 그 기술로 인해 촉발되는 생태계의 변화에 대한 관심을 촉구해온 그는 자율주행 라이다(LiDAR) 기술을 접목해 관람객들에게 소리를 통해 공간을 인식하는 환경인지 장치 ‘데이터스케이프’를 소개하며 첨단기술을 예술의 영역으로 확장했다.
지난 1월에 문 연 울산시립미술관은 첨단 미디어아트 전용관(XR Lab)을 갖춘 미래형 미술관이다. 가상현실(VR), 인터랙티브가 가능한 증강현실(AR), 핸드셋 없이도 보는 확장현실(XR) 등의 시설을 갖춘 미디어아트 전용관에선 미디어아트 선구자 알도 탐벨리니의 특별전이 4월 17일까지 열린다.
Another big name is Hoonida Kim, who explores cutting-edge technology and the effects such advances can have on an ecosystem. Through DataScape Type 01, Kim brought self-driving LiDAR technology into the realm of art, using sound technology to give visitors an expanded awareness of their surroundings.
The Ulsan Museum of Art, which opened in January, is a futuristic art museum equipped with a state-of-the-art media art space, XR Lab. A special exhibition of media art pioneer Aldo Tambellini will be held until April 17 at the museum’s immersive media art hall.

비디오아트의 창시자 백남준(1932~2006) 이 올해로 ‘구순’을 맞는다. 그의 탄생 90주년을 기념해 한국 곳곳에서 1년 내내 축제 같은 전시가 열릴 예정. 첫 포문은 <백남준의 비디오 서재>(njpvideo.ggcf.kr) 가 연다. 백남준의 비디오 아카이브를 웹 환경에서 감상할 수 있는 온라인 스트리밍 플랫폼으로 싱글 채널 비디오, 방송 클립, 퍼포먼스와 전시 기록 영상, 비디오 조각과 설치의 소스, 지난 10여 년간 그의 예술 세계를 연구한 성과물을 누구나 접근할 수 있는 공공자원으로 제공한다. 3월엔 백남준의 예술 세계에서 가장 중요한 10가지 순간을 역순으로 되짚는 <아방가르드는 당당하다>(3. 3.~9. 18. 백남준아트센터)를 주목할 것. 1993년 베네치아 비엔날레 출품작 <칭기즈칸의 복권>, 2000년 구겐하임 미술관에서의 회고전에 출품됐던 <삼원소> 등 그의 예술적 근원을 추적할 수 있는 작품을 만날 기회다. 백남준이 태어난 7월 20일엔 그의 예술 세계를 모두가 함께 즐길 수 있는 페스티벌 <나의 축제는 거칠 것이 없어라>(7. 20.~8. 20. 백남준아트센터 일대)가 성대하게 열릴 예정이다. 연극, 실험음악, 퍼포먼스를 비롯해 비디오 월, 멀티비디오 프로젝션 등 시공간을 통합하는 이벤트로 기술과 예술, 사람을 대하는 백남준의 다정한 세계를 오감으로 만나고 즐길 수 있다.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Nam June Paik (1932-2006), the originator of video art. To celebrate the special occasion, tributes in various forms are scheduled in Korea and online throughout the year. The first of these is Paik’s Video Study (njpvideo.ggcf.kr), an online streaming platform that makes available the Nam June Paik video archive. Included in the archive are broadcasting clips, archival footage of performances, source data for video installations and research on Paik’s oeuvre. Archaeology of the Avant-Garde (March 3-September 18, Nam June Paik Art Center) will focus on 10 major moments in the artist’s career in reverse chronological order. It’s an opportunity to encounter pieces that give insights into Paik’s artistic origins.
A magnificent festival called My Jubilee ist Unverhemmet (July 20-August 20, near the Nam June Paik Art Center) will kick off on the artist’s birthday. There will be video walls, multivideo projections and a great deal more for the five senses to take in.

The nonfungible token (NFT) art market is expanding at a rapid clip. According to statistics released last September by NonFungible.com, a website that analyzes digital assets, transactions in NFTs were valued at more than $300 million in 2021. Art columnist In-sun Choi sums up NFT art trends in the Korean art market and the issues that NFT art is creating in various fields.

NFT vs. 우리가 알고 있는 미술
현재 큐레이팅 기반의 한국 NFT 마켓 플레이스 플랫폼에서 아트디렉터로 활동하면서 NFT 아트를 둘러싼 흐름, 현상을 가까이에서 지켜보고 있다. 특히 큐레이터로서 작가 및 관계자들에게 NFT 아트를 긍정적으로 전하고 있다. 2020년 말부터 NFT 아트의 세계를 접하며 핵심적으로 자리한 생각은 다음과 같다. NFT 아트는 사조, 사상, 역사, 연대와 같은 기존 미술계의 규격을 완벽히 벗어나 발전하고 있다.
또 큐레토리얼 실행이나 사회적 카테고리의 대입보다 작가(창작자) 개인의 디지털적 상상력이 더 중요한 역할을 한다. 실제 유명 갤러리에 소속된 기성작가들의 작품 바로 옆에서 처음 보는 ‘ID’를 가진 창작자의 작품이 더 높은 금액으로 거래되고 있는 현상이 이런 흐름을 뒷받침하는 증거다.
NFTs vs. Traditional Art
I’ve been closely following trends and developments related to NFT art in my current role as the art director of a curation-based Korean NFT marketplace. The key points, I believe, are as follows. NFT art is a new type of art that goes beyond the established norms of the art world, such as trends, ideology, history and connections. Furthermore, the personal digital creativity of the artist plays a more important role than curation or categorization. That trend is demonstrated by the fact that pieces by unknown artists are fetching more money than pieces by established artists.

NFT의 유용성
작품을 사는 행동 심리를 1~2가지로 정의할 수는 없겠지만 한국의 NFT 아트 거래 양상은 크게 둘로 나뉜다. 첫째는 작품의 유용성(투자가치)에 중점을 두는 입장이다. 유용성에 더 큰 가치를 두는 작가는 피지털(피지컬+디지털) 에디션을 만들거나 오프라인 프로모션 등으로 효과를 극대화한다. 오라(순수, 예술성)에 초점을 두는 작가는 기존 작품에 약간의 변화만 주어 발행하는 경우가 많다. 흥미롭게도 이 부분은 아트 펀딩의 초창기 모습과 다르지 않다. 21세기 초반 아트 컬렉팅 붐이 일면서 재테크를 목적으로 작품을 구매하는 사람과 좋아하는 작품을 집에 걸어두기 위해 수집하는 사람으로 나뉘었던 현상과 비슷한 경향이라 할 수 있다.
The Usefulness of NFTs
There are basically two major aspects of NFT art trading in Korea. First, the focus is placed on an artwork’s utility (investment value). Creators seeking more utility maximize their impact by making “phygital” (physical plus digital) editions or by holding offline promotions. Second, artists who focus on purity and artistry often make minor changes to standard pieces before releasing them. This is a bit like the distinction between those who bought art as an investment and those who bought it simply because they liked it during the art collection boom of the early 21st century.
대체 불가능한 고민
NFT 아트 세계에서 강한 생명력을 갖는 작품은 대개 디지털 태생이다. 예전처럼 기존 작품을 스캔하여 디지털화하거나 영상 작업 원본을 단순히 NFT 형태로 발행하는 작업은 거의 찾아볼 수 없다는 뜻이다. 요즘 NFT 아트 신에서 중요하게 거론되는 화두는 짧은 사색의 결과로 수백 개의 에디션 넘버를 붙여 양산하는 작품들이다. 또 태생이 디지털 기반이 아닌 작가들이 NFT 세계에 진입할 때, 평면 디지털 작업으로 변환하는 과정이 작품을 재탄생시키는 매우 중요한 부분이기에 밀도 있는 고민과 당위성을 찾아야 한다.
하지만 이 변환 과정이 부재하거나 터부시한다는 의견도 많다. 대체 불가능한 토큰을 사용한다고 해서 반드시 작품도 대체 불가능할 필요는 물론 없지만 그러나 ‘왜 NFT여야만 하는가’에 대한 확실한 해답이 보이는 작품을 만드는 것이 중요할 것이다.
NFT Art and Sustainablity
In the NFT art scene, the works with the most staying power tend to be those that were created digitally. This means it’s become rare to see artists releasing NFTs of digital scans of earlier artwork or the original work files for video artwork.
An important topic being discussed in the NFT art scene today is the existence of artwork that’s being thoughtlessly mass-produced, with hundreds of serial numbers. Furthermore, when artists who aren’t based in digital media enter the world of NFTs, they should spend time carefully considering not only the appropriateness of NFTs but also the process of digitizing their work.

이미래 이미래(1988년생)는 물질에 순정적이다. 그의 조각은 인간만큼이나 더럽고 질척거리는데, 그만큼 거짓이 없다. 이미래는 자신이 조합한 물질이 드러낼 수 있는 감정에 한계를 두지 않는 방향으로 선택한다. 그의 조각은 옳음의 영역 밖에 있기 때문에 촉각적이고 감정적일 수 있다. 이미래는 진짜로 보려고 하고, 웬만해서는 부끄러움을 외면하지 않는 것 같다.

Mire Lee Mire Lee (b. 1988) approaches materials with a sense of purity. Her sculptures are as dirty and as messy as humans themselves, but they are also just as honest. Lee chooses not to limit the feelings that can be expressed via the materials she uses, and her sculptures are at once both tactile and emotional because they lie outside the realm of what is “right.“

박신영 박신영(1987년생)에게 낯선 곳으로의 여행과 이동은 새로운 조형적 언어를 만들어내기 위한 일종의 동력원이다. 타지에서 발견한 독특한 색감과 질감의 사물, 인물, 풍경은 몽환적이고 촉각적인 정서를 불러일으키는 이미지가 되어 보는 이를 현실과 가상, 의식과 무의식의 경계로 인도한다. 모노타이프 판화와 잉크 드로잉을 통해 이국적인 감각을 구현하는 그의 행보를 주목할 만하다.

Jae-gyun Lim Looking at the sculptures of Jae-gyun Lim, (b. 1994), it is as if they take root in the ground beneath them, rising perpendicularly from the floor. The error messages that flicker sporadically across the digital screens of his installations cut through the safety and harmony of the images, building up tension in a striking way. Lim’s artistic identity continues to evolve — we can see this in two of his recent works, Reformatting (2021) and fickle-side down (2021).

람한 람한(1989년생)은 서울에 기반을 둔 디지털 페인터다. 오래된 팝, 하위문화에 관심이 많고 기억에 남는 사물과 장면을 호출하여 가상현실 속 판타지를 실험한다. ‘심리적 실체’의 또 다른 개념이 되어버린 디지털아트에서 람한의 창의적인 황홀감은 디지털이라는 ‘태생’에 그 힘이 있다. 디지털의 매끈함보다 몽환적인 동화가 떠오르고, 전자 음향보다 나무로 만든 피리 소리가 떠오르는 이유는 작가 고유의 깊은 사색이 있기 때문. 오프 버튼을 누르면 암흑으로 사라져버리는 디지털아트의 숙명도 람한의 서사 안에서는 숨 멎지 않고 피어오른다.
Han Ram Han Ram (b. 1989) is a Seoul-based digital artist who explores retro pop and subcultures, bringing objects and scenes from his memories into his work, and playing with fantasy concepts within his virtual realities. Thanks to Han’s contemplative approach, his works conjure up the mood of dream-like fairytales rather than the usual sleekness of the digital and evoke the sound of wooden flutes rather then electronic music. In Han’s artistic world, digital art blooms endlessly.

남진우 남진우(1985년생)는 대왕오징어를 자신의 정체성으로 삼고 소설, 성경, 대중 만화 등 다양한 문화적 레퍼런스를 활용하면서 독특한 세계관을 그려왔다. 어릴 적 보던 전쟁물에서 전형적인 주인공 로봇과 악당으로 분한 괴물과의 전투 신을 회상하며 늘 패배하고 미움을 받는 괴물의 모습에 자신을 이입한 것이다. 남진우는 평면 회화뿐 아니라 콜라주 및 조각으로 재구성하거나 부조의 형식을 차용하면서 무대적 화면을 조성해 시간적 요소를 개입시키는 등 회화 형식의 다양한 가능성을 제시한다.
Jin-u Nam By adopting an image of a giant squid for himself, Jin-u Nam (b. 1985) manifests a unique worldview, alluding to novels, the Bible and popular cartoons. He recalls a battle scene he saw on Power Rangers as a child between a typical robot and a villainous monster and identifies with the monster, who he recalls as being ever hated and defeated. Aside from painting, Nam creates works in mediums including collage and sculpture.

Ha-neyl Choi Referring to himself as a sculptor — at a time when mixing media and genres is commonplace in art — Ha-neyl Choi (b. 1991) expresses skepticism about the present and asks questions about tomorrow in a way that can only be expressed through sculpture. A queer artist living in conservative Korean society, Choi chooses not to approach issues indirectly but, through his art, to vocally ponder a future in which diversity is accepted.

The exhibition will be held in the museum’s Space Lee Ufan from September 8 and will run until February 26, 2023.

바라캇 서울 Barakat Seoul
지난 2016년 설립된 바라캇 서울은 1860년대 예루살렘에서 시작해 5대에 걸쳐 전통을 이어오고 있는 바라캇 갤러리의 아시아 최초 분점으로, 한국에서 접하기 어려웠던 전 세계의 고대 예술품을 꾸준히 소개해왔다. 야외에 세워둔 벤틀리 차량은 바라캇 갤러리의 수장이자 현대미술가인 피에즈 바라캇의 작품 <Bentley Arnage>으로, 액션페인팅 기법을 사용해 화려한 추상회화의 세계를 엿볼 수 있다. 전시 공간은 경복궁 돌담 풍경을 배경으로 작품을 감상할 수 있는 상설 전시장인 고대 유물관과 다채로운 기획전이 펼쳐지는 특별 전시관으로 구성된다. 또한 본관 2층에는 프라이빗한 분위기의 살롱이 자리해 일상 속에서 고대 예술품을 어떤 방식으로 향유할 수 있는지를 가시적으로 보여준다.
Opened in 2016, Barakat Seoul is Asia’s first branch of the Barakat Gallery, which was founded in Jerusalem in the 1860s. Barakat is like heaven, especially for those who love antiques. Outside the Barakat Seoul is a colorfully painted Bentley, which is the work of contemporary artist Fayez Barakat. The gallery consists of a permanent exhibition space where ancient artifacts are displayed against the backdrop of the stone wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace and a separate space for special exhibitions. There is also a private salon located on the second floor of the main building. The salon displays ancient relics as though they were part of everyday life.

Barakat Contemporary, down the street from Barakat Seoul, strives to bring the contemporary art scene to Korea with new attention to Africa, Asia and the Middle East. These efforts are clear in the choice of James Barnor, a 92-year-old photographer whose work will be exhibited starting in mid-March. Both Ghanaian and British, Barnor has vividly captured the social history of the two countries through his photos. The gallery will feature exhibitions of the work of Nevin Aladag˘ in May and Alex Verhaest in June.

Perrotin, which features such famous artists as Maurizio Cattelan, Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michelle Othoniel, Sophie Calle and Seo-bo Park, has gallery spaces around the world, including in Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Perrotin Seoul opened in 2016 with a solo exhibition by French artist Laurent Grasso. Since then, various artists, including Daniel Arsham, Leslie Hewitt and Zach Harris have held solo exhibitions at Perrotin Seoul, and the gallery has held a group exhibition titled Healing, which was curated by Takashi Murakami. Perrotin Seoul’s first exhibition in 2022 will be a solo show in the spring by Kelly Beeman, a Brooklyn-based artist.

Konig¨, one of Germany’s most influential galleries, opened a new gallery inside MCM Haus in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, in April 2021. The space is quite different from the Konig¨ Gallery in Berlin, which is nestled in a church building representative of brutalist architecture. Konig¨ Seoul aims to contribute to the growth of the Korean art market by introducing the work of artists unfamiliar to Korean audiences. This spring the Robert Janitz solo exhibition will come to a close and will be followed by Austyn Weiner’s solo show.

페이스갤러리는 미국의 아트 딜러이자 영화감독이었던 아니 글림처가 1960년 설립한 곳으로, 추상표현주의 및 빛과 공간 운동을 이끈 예술가들의 작업을 초기부터 지원하며 미국 미술의 유산을 발견해왔다. 지난 2017년 서울 지점을 개관한 후, 타라 도노반, 이토 바라다 등 동시대를 대표하는 작가들을 꾸준히 국내에 소개했다. 지난해 5월, 근처 르베이지빌딩 2~3층에 800m2 규모로 이전한 데 이어 올해 1층 공간을 추가 확장해 더 넓은 전시 공간을 마련했다.
Pace Gallery was founded in 1960 by Arne Glimcher, a U.S. art dealer and film director who supported trailblazing abstract expressionists. Since the Seoul branch of the Pace Gallery opened in 2017, it has steadily been introducing contemporary artists to Korea, including Tara Donovan and Yto Barada. In May 2021, it took over two floors in the Le Beige Building, near the Leeum Museum, gaining nearly 800m2 of floor space. And it is now massively expanding its ground floor area.

마르셀 뒤샹, 알렉스 카츠, 로이 리히텐슈타인, 앤디 워홀 등 현대 미술의 거장들이 소속된 타데우스 로팍은 1983년 오스트리아 잘츠부르크에서 시작되었다. 지난해 10월 한남동 분점 오픈 이후, 서울은 타데우스 로팍의 가장 큰 아이덴티티라고 할 수 있는 ‘유럽 지역’의 바깥에 위치한 아시아 최초의 거점이 되었다. 한남동을 택한 이유는 트렌디한 강남과 한국의 전통이 깃든 삼청동의 중간 지점이기 때문. 개관전이었던 게오르그 바젤리츠의 전시와 알렉스 카츠의 전시가 연이어 흥행했으며, 영국 현대미술가 제이슨 마틴의 미공개 신작 회화를 선보이는 개인전 <Convergence>가 4월 16일까지 진행된다. 이후 올리버 비어, 톰 삭스, 안젤름 키퍼, 로버트 라우션버그의 전시도 차례대로 열린다.
타데우스 로팍 서울은 한국건축문화대상 우수상을 수상한 포트힐 건물 2층에 자리한다. 절제된 우아함이 돋보이는 내부 인테리어에는 양태오 디자이너가 참여했다.Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul is located on the second floor of the Fort Hill building, which won a Korean Architecture Award for excellence. Teo Yang designed the interior space, which boasts an understated elegance.
The Thaddaeus Ropac gallery opened in Salzburg, Austria, in 1983 and is affiliated with such masters of contemporary art as Marcel Duchamp, Alex Katz and Andy Warhol. The gallery in Hannam-dong, Seoul, which opened in October 2021, was Thaddaeus Ropac’s first location outside Europe. Hannam-dong was chosen because it is right between the trendy Gangnam neighborhood and Samcheong-dong, which is more traditional. The gallery is showing the exhibition Convergence, which features new paintings by British contemporary artist Jason Martin, until April 16. Upcoming shows will spotlight Oliver Beer, Tom Sachs, Anselm Kiefer and Robert Rauschenberg.

Lehmann Maupin Seoul is leaving Anguk-dong for an expansive new location in Hannam-dong. The gallery, which also has locations in New York, London and Hong Kong, plans to take advantage of its spacious new location of two floors totaling more than 240m2 to showcase a wider variety of works in the future. The new space even has an outdoor terrace for sculptural installations. The first exhibition following the move, titled Opaque, Translucent and Luminous, will feature new work by contemporary painter Lari Pittman, who is based in Los Angeles, the U.S. The exhibition will run from March 15 to May 7.

지난 2016년 청담동에 서울 지점을 오픈한 후 삼청동으로 이전해 전도유망한 작가들을 소개해온 초이앤라거 갤러리가 3월, 초이앤초이라는 이름으로 새로운 시작을 알린다. 20여 년간 아트 신에서 활동해온 한국인 쌍둥이 자매 최선희, 최진희 공동대표가 운영하는 초이앤초이 갤러리는 그간 독일 쾰른에 거점을 두고 한국의 현대미술을 국제 미술시장에 소개하는 가교 역할을 해왔다. 3월 26일부터는 다시금 출발선에 선 초이앤초이 갤러리를 축하하기 위해 무려 40여 명의 작가가 참여하는 그룹전 <FLOWER>가 열린다. 해당 전시는 창작을 갈망하는 이들에게 믿음직한 뮤즈로서 존재해온 소재인 꽃을 다룬다.

CHOI&CHOI Gallery, which opened its Seoul branch under its former name in Cheongdam-dong in 2016, before moving to Samcheong-dong, will start anew with its inaugural exhibition in March 2022. The art gallery is run by CEOs Sun-hee Choi and Jin-hee Choi, twin sisters who have been playing an active role in the art scene for more than 20 years. The sisters have helped introduce Korean contemporary art to the international art market from their base in Cologne, Germany. CHOI&CHOI Gallery will celebrate its reopening with a group exhibition titled FLOWER, which will feature 40 artists, beginning on March 26.

독일 베를린에 거점을 둔 현대미술 갤러리 페레스 프로젝트가 3월 하순, 서울신라호텔 아케이드 공간 내 오픈한다. 1980~90년대생 젊은 작가들이 주축을 이루는 페레스 프로젝트는 2019년 아트 부산을 시작으로 매년 국내 아트페어에 참여하며 그 존재를 알려왔다. 첫 오프닝 전시로는 소속 작가들의 그룹전이 열릴 예정.

Daniel Arsham’s Blue Calcite Eroded Moses and Quartz Eroded Ara Pacis are located prominently in the lobby (which the hotel refers to as Palace Gate). The former is based on a masterpiece created from marble by Michaelangelo, while part of the latter is based on Ara Pacis Augustae, a piece of architecture relief currently held by the Louvre. The piece Glory, by Johan Creten, looks like it is made of pure gold, imparting an elegant, magical feel to the Grand Reception area. Other pieces on display around the hotel include works by Candida Höfer, who captures multilayered moments of beauty, as well as leading Korean artists such as Ji-won Kim and Jung-jin Lee.

As an art hotel, RYSE’s biggest draw is its four Artist Suites, which were created in collaboration with real artists. Spending a night in Artist Suite 1504, which contains installation art and Yeo-joo Park’s Twilight Zone series, allows you to enjoy an atmosphere that changes depending on the time of day. A piece of installation art by graphic artist Chris Ro that is located on the outside of the hotel serves as a visual interpretation of the sound of numbers. Meanwhile, the graffiti on the curved surface leading to the underground parking lot was created by the anonymous Berlin-based graffiti crew 1UP during a visit to Korea. The hotel plans to fill this wall with even more pieces through collaborations with other artists. The Mirror Paintings series by Coen Young awaits you in the third floor lobby. These pieces have silvery, mirror-like surfaces that reflect images and point to the importance of human gestures.

The Vista Walkerhill hotel opened the Print Bakery Flagship Store on its first floor in collaboration with Print Bakery. This space is both an art shop and a gallery that runs three to four colorful exhibitions yearly. The opening exhibition Good Vibes was dedicated to Ji-hee Kim. This was followed by The Mooood I Love, a solo exhibition by visual artist Abang, and Flow, which showcased newcomers Sae-rom Yoon, Geon-wu Lee and Seung-yun Choi.

PODO Hotel is almost a work of art in itself, shaped stunningly like Jeju’s famous volcanic cones and thatched roof houses. The naturalistic design philosophy of renowned architect Itami Jun permeates the entire building. The design of the Grand Josun Jeju, which opened last year, was undertaken by up-and-coming design duo Humbert & Poyet. Having already completed the Josun Palace in Gangnam, Seoul, and the Grand Josun Busan, the pair combined art nouveau and art deco styles in the work they undertook at the Grand Josun Jeju. Two of Ugo Rondinone’s Sun paintings are located in the hotel — one at the entrance and the other in the lobby — and Alex Katz’s Homage to Degas can be viewed in the private lounge Gran J. The eye-catching pieces hanging from the ceiling of the sixth floor were made by artist Jeong-hwa Choi, who breaks down the barriers between high art and pop culture. And don’t forget to visit L’Edition Alliance on the fifth floor of the main building. This shop sells signed and numbered pieces by renowned artists in collaboration with printing studios and world-class galleries.

- ‘옻칠’에 부쳐 전 문화부 장관이자 시대의 지식인 이어령은 다음과 같은 말을 남겼다. “어둠의 바닥에서 찾아낸 천년의 빛”. 그 빛을 과거의 영광에 가두지 않고 현대의 예술과 삶으로 승화시킨 이가 있다.

Author and former Korean Minister of Culture O Young Lee once described lacquer art as “The light of a thousand years found on a floor of darkness.” There is a man who, in the name of tradition, has not left this light in the glory of the past but has instead brought it into modern art and modern lives. This is the story of lacquer artist Yong-bok Jun.
옻. 옻나무에서 나는 진을 뜻한다. 물건에 칠하는 원료 또는 약재로 쓰인다. 주로 목재 위에 발라 목재를 보호하고 광택을 낸다. 옻칠한 것은 부패나 변질이 안 되고 몸에 유익한 원적외선을 방출해 기능적으로도 훌륭한 재료다. 1500여 년 전의 고구려 벽화, 13세기에 완성된 팔만대장경 등이 현대에도 온전한 것은 지속성이 1만 년 이상 가는 옻칠 덕이다.
한국에서 옻칠은 공예의 한 장르로 알려져왔다. 칠예가 전용복은 옻칠을 공예를 넘어 예술로 만든 장인이다. 그 이유를 들 때 가장 먼저 나오는 단어가 있다. 메구로가조엔.
메구로가조엔은 1931년에 문 연 일본의 연회장이자 호텔이다. 애니메이션 <센과 치히로의 행방불명> 속 연회 장면의 배경이 된 곳으로 알려져 있다. 일본에선 ‘국보급’ 유산으로 꼽힌다. 에도시대를 대표하는 칠예 작품 5000여 점이 바닥과 천장, 벽을 뒤덮고 있기 때문이다. 메구로가조엔이 철거의 위기를 딛고 복원 사업을 발표했을 때, 일본의 내로라 하는 옻칠 장인 3000여 명이 복원 작업에 관심을 보이며 참여를 원했다. 메구로가조엔의 옻칠 밥상 ‘오젠’을 수리하며 복원 가능성에 대한 소식을 들은 후 2년간 일본어를 공부하고 일본 전역에서 지역의 옻칠 기법을 순례하며 철저히 준비한 전용복도 그중 하나였다. 그 치열한 경쟁에서 창업주의 손자 호소카와 히로유키의 전화를 받은 장본인이 전용복이다.
전용복은 전통적인 칠예 기법에 현대적 감성과 기술을 접목해 독창적인 작품을 만든다. Yong-bok Jun creates original works of art by combining modern aesthetics and technology with traditional lacquerware techniques.
Lacquer is the resin that comes from Asian sumac. It is used as both a finishing material for objects and a medicinal ingredient. Typically applied to wood, lacquer provides both protection and a bright luster. But that’s not all: Lacquered objects are not only immune to rotting and deterioration, but they also emit far-infrared radiation that is good for the human body. The fact that Goguryeo Dynasty (37BC-AD668) murals from 1,500 years ago and the Tripitaka Koreana, a collection of Buddhist texts carved onto woodblocks in the 13th century, still remain fully intact today is thanks to lacquer, which preserves materials for extremely long periods of time.
Ottchil (traditional Korean lacquer work) is usually considered a craft. Yong-bok Jun is an artisan who has managed to turn it into an art form. A major part of his artistic journey, he explains, was Meguro Gajoen.
Meguro Gajoen opened in Tokyo in 1931 as a restaurant and is now a hotel. Its Hyakudan Kaidan section is a tangible cultural property of Tokyo because the floors, ceiling and walls are covered in 5,000 or so exquisite lacquerware works from the Edo period (1603-1867). When it was announced that the Hyakudan Kaidan would be restored, some 3,000 of Japan’s best lacquer artisans expressed interest in the project. One of those was Yong-bok Jun. He heard about the potential restoration project while repairing Meguro Gajoen’s lacquerware table ojen, and he subsequently spent two years learning Japanese and making a pilgrimage around the country to learn local lacquer techniques. In the face of fierce competition, it was Jun who ultimately received a phone call from Hiroyuki Hosokawa, the grandson of the hotel’s founder and the man in charge of the project.
3년 후, 그는 1조 원대 규모의 초대형 복원 작업 중 가장 중요한 옻칠 복원 및 신작 제작을 성공적으로 끝마쳤다. 1991년 11월 13일, 메구로가조엔엔 태극기가 휘날렸다.
이 드라마 같은 이야기를 자신의 역사로 만든 장인을 한남동 목단가옥에서 만났다. 그의 자서전에서 일화를 막 읽고 난 터라 기대가 일었다. 붉은벽돌 13만 장으로 지은 건물의 문을 열고 안으로 들어서자 휘황한 풍광이 눈을 압도했다. 벽과 천장, 탁자부터 장식까지 수려하고 아름다운 칠예 작품으로 꾸며져 있었다.
“목단가옥은 오랜 시간 칠예와 한국 전통 문화를 사랑한 애호가인 이곳 대표가 내게 의뢰해 만든 공간입니다. 메구로가조엔에서 비롯된 경험, 그 이후 쌓은 나의 기술이 총망라된 장소라고 생각하면 됩니다. 그땐 서른여섯이었고 이젠 일흔에 가까운 나이가 됐잖아요. 고려와 조선의 전통 칠예 기법부터, 지난 50여 년간 새롭고 다채로운 기법으로 작품을 발표하며 옻칠의 세계화를 꿈꾼 나의 시도들이 이곳에 고스란히 녹아 있죠.”
Three years later, the $830 million restoration project wrapped up successfully. Jun was hailed as a global lacquerware artisan throughout Japan.
I meet the artisan himself in Mokdangaok, in the Hannam-dong neighborhood of Seoul. Having just read the story of Meguro Gajoen in Jun’s autobiography, I am filled with anticipation. Opening the door to the building made from 130,000 red lacquered bricks, I am dazzled. From the walls and ceiling to the table and decorations, everything is adorned with beautiful lacquerware.
“Mokdangaok is a space I created after receiving a commission from the CEO here, a longtime lover of lacquerware and Korean traditional culture who is also a collector,” Jun explains. “This is a space where I’ve applied the experience I gained from working at Meguro Gajoen, the repertoire of techniques I’ve developed since then and my expertise with textures. I’ve produced pieces using methods ranging from traditional lacquering techniques from over 1,000 years ago to colorful new techniques developed over the past 50 years. And infused here are my attempts to achieve my dream, the globalization of lacquerware.”
그중 하나가 엘리베이터다. 목단가옥의 1층부터 3층까지를 잇는 이 승강기는 문과 안쪽 벽이 통째로 칠예 작품으로 꾸며져 있다. 일본의 미쓰비시와 메구로가조엔의 엘리베이터 34기를 움직이는 옻칠 갤러리로 만드는 데 성공한 그는 한국에 돌아온 후에도 티센크루프엘리베이터코리아와 나전 옻칠 엘리베이터를 만들어왔다. 금속에 옻을 붙이며 완벽한 내구성까지 갖춘 그만의 독자적인 기법을 볼 수 있는 작품이다.

그 앞에서 전용복은 대뜸 질문을 던졌다. “전통이 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?” 답을 기다리지 않는 물음에 침묵도 잠시. “전통은 꾸준히 변하는 것입니다. 전통을 있는 그대로 지키는 것도 중요하지만, 한편에선 전해져 내려오는 것의 맥을 이으며 시대와 더불어 모습을 바꾸는 것도 필요합니다. 나의 작품은 전통을 기반으로 하는 현대 칠예 기법으로 탄생했습니다. 이 엘리베이터가 그중 하나죠. 21세기에 부응하는 새로운 장르의 칠예를 선보이고 전하는 것이 내 소신이고 철학입니다.”
A case in point is the elevator, the door and inner walls of which are decorated with lacquerware. Jun originally succeeded in turning 34 elevators in Japan into moving lacquerware galleries, and he has worked with ThyssenKrupp Elevator Korea, adorning elevators with mother-of-pearl lacquer, since returning to Korea. These spaces show Jun’s unique technique of attaching mother-of-pearl to gold and creating extremely durable work.
In front of the elevator, Jun suddenly asks me a question. “What do you think tradition is?” There is a moment of silence before he answers his own question. “Tradition is something that steadily changes. It’s important to uphold traditions as they are, but at the same time, you also need to carry on the legacy of what has been passed down, and change how things look to fit with the times. My work involves rooting modern lacquer techniques in tradition.”
그 철학의 자산들 중엔 시계도 있다. 그가 세계적인 시계 브랜드의 주문을 받아 만든 8억 원짜리 작품을 비롯한 24개의 옻칠 시계는 전량 모두 전 세계 시계 애호가들의 손에 들어가 있다. 전자기타, 드럼, 바이올린과 피아노, 첼로 같은 악기도 그의 캔버스. 전용복은 ‘할 수 있다’는 신념으로 관념과 편견을 뒤집으며 옻칠의 영역을 확장하고 있다.
“옻칠로 표현할 수 있는 모든 것들을 만들어 보이고 싶습니다. 옻이 정말로 좋은 것이기 때문이에요. 옻은 만년의 신비를 가진 재료입니다. 나무에서 추출한 수액이기 때문에 자연에도, 사람의 몸에도 유익한 물질을 생성합니다. 특히 항균 효과가 아주 뛰어나지요. 그리고 아름다움을 오래도록 간직할 수 있게 해주기도 하고요. 요즘 나는 전통적인 옻칠을 생활 공간에 어떻게, 아름답게 접목할 수 있을까를 고민하며 시간을 보내고 있습니다.”
칠순을 앞둔 그의 입에선 지나온 시간과 성취보다 앞으로 할 일, 하고 싶은 일, 해야 할 일들에 대한 이야기가 더 많이 흘러나왔다. 미국 뉴욕 맨해튼에 갤러리 오픈을 앞두고 그곳 생활을 준비하고 있다는 이야기, 중국 전역에서 열리는 한중 수교 30주년 기념 전시 일정부터 수십 년간 터득한 기법과 노하우를 모두 털어넣어 참된 옻칠의 지침서를 만들고 싶다는 꿈까지 전용복의 계획담은 어느새 1시간을 훌쩍 넘겼다.
“지금은 연구소 한 동을 내 작품이 걸릴 박물관으로 만들고 있어요. 나는 하고 싶은 일이 너무 많아요. 그래서 나이 먹을 시간이 없어요. 너무 생생하게 살아 있거든. 몸도, 마음도.”
One of the results of this philosophy is his custom-made watches. The 24 lacquered watches created by Jun, including one $670,000 piece ordered by a global watch brand, are owned by watch enthusiasts around the world. Instruments including electric guitars, drums, violins, pianos and cellos are also canvases for Jun’s experimental, groundbreaking work. Jun continues to move beyond old ideas and prejudices and expand the field of lacquer art with his can-do attitude.
“I want to make everything that can possibly be expressed through ottchil, because lacquer is something very special,” he says. “Recently, I’ve been thinking about how I can apply lacquer to living spaces in a beautiful way.”
Nearing the age of 70, Jun spends more time talking about what he wants to do and has to do than reflecting on times past or his previous achievements. He speaks of opening a gallery in Manhattan, New York, and preparing to live in the U.S.; the schedule for an exhibition in China to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China; and his dream of creating a lacquer art guidebook based on the techniques and expertise he has acquired. An hour flies by in no time at all as I listen to Jun talk about the future.
“At the moment,” he says, “I’m converting one of the buildings I use as a workshop into a dedicated museum to display my works. There are still so many things I want to do, so I don’t have time to get old. I’ve been living life so intensely, in both body and mind.”

Whenever I see the tombs and other historical sites of Gyeongju (capital of the Silla Dynasty, 57BC-AD935), I wonder who or what is buried inside. What kinds of lives did Silla’s people lead? I decided to visit Gyeongju in search of answers.

쉼과 치유의 공간이 된 박물관 역사가 유산이자 정체성인 도시에서 박물관은 이정표다. 기원전 57년부터 통일신라시대까지 경주와 경상도 곳곳에서 발견한 국보와 보물이 망라된 국립경주박물관도 그렇다. 책에서 접했던 경주를 상징하는 유물들, 천마총 금관과 얼굴무늬 수막새, 금동약사여래입상과 성덕대왕신종 같은 문화재들을 코앞에 두고 보는 순간은 확실히 격 다른 감동을 선사한다.
A Museum for Rest and Healing Last year, Gyeongju National Museum suddenly became the subject of renewed interest among culture and art lovers. Much of that attention was focused on the name Teo Yang, who had been picked as one of the World’s Best Contemporary Interior Designers by Phaidon Press. A refurbished space that Yang had worked on in partnership with the museum opened last year after three years of preparation.

지난해 문화예술 애호가들 사이에서 국립경주박물관이 새삼스럽게 회자됐다. 그 관심의 중심에 양태오라는 이름이 있다. 세계 3대 아트 전문 출판사 파이돈 프레스가 선정한 ‘세계 최고의 동시대 인테리어디자이너 100인’으로 꼽힌 그가 국립경주박물관과 손잡고 3년에 걸쳐 리뉴얼한 공간이 공개됐기 때문이다. 박물관의 전형적 공간 문법에서 벗어나 새롭게 단장한 국립경주박물관의 첫 변화는 신라 역사관 로비에서 만난다. 안으로 들어서면 어둡고 칙칙한 회색 대리석 대신 밝은 모래 빛의 건축재와 나무로 꾸민 로비가 가장 먼저 시선에 든다. 신라 굽다리 토기와 한옥의 미감을 빼닮은 천장과 장식, 그 아래 유리 장에 갇히지 않은 신라 토기들이 조각상처럼 오롯이 서 있다. 그 창연한 토기 너머로 바깥 경치를 차경으로 담는 통창이 펼쳐진다. 창 앞, 해를 등지고 앉아 공간의 일부가 된 사자 석조물, 중정의 고목과 멀리 수묵화처럼 서 있는 남산이 중첩되는 풍광 앞에 서니 유물과 한 공간에서 호흡하는 감동이 마음을 뭉근히 건드린다.
신라미술관에서도 감성의 시간이 이어진다. 1층과 2층을 연결하는 중층 로비엔 ‘약사여래불’과 국보 ‘송화산 석조반가사유상’, 그리고 두 불상을 잇는, 경주 남산과 경주고선사지삼층석탑을 병풍처럼 품는 벽창이 있다. 몸과 마음, 무지의 병을 고쳐주는 약사불과 생각에 잠긴 반가사유상의 자애로운 자태 사이에서 혼자 있기 좋은 평상 위에 가부좌를 틀고 앉아 한참을 그렇게 머물렀다.
The first of the changes to Gyeongju National Museum can be found in the lobby of the Silla History Gallery, where the museum created an entirely new look. The first things you see upon opening the door are the bright, sand-colored building materials that have replaced the drab gray marble, as well as the wooden decorations. The ceiling and decor are infused with the beauty of the Silla Dynasty (57BC-AD935), and pieces of Silla earthenware stand proudly below it, unrestrained by any glass casing. Beyond the ancient earthenware are tall windows that show off the landscape outside. The stone lion by the window leans against the sun and becomes part of the space itself, while the old trees in the courtyard overlap with Namsan Mountain, which stands in the distance. Sharing the same space as these relics is a moving experience.
I continue my sentimental journey in the Silla Art Gallery. This space is home to a collection of art and Buddhist cultural relics from the Silla era. The hallway that connects the first and second floors contains the Healing Medicine Buddha, the national treasure Songhwasan Pensive Bodhisattva and a mural that links the two statues, depicting Namsan Mountain and the stone pagoda at the site of Goseonsa Temple. I stand there contemplating the Medicine Buddha, which is said to have healing powers, and the Pensive Bodhisattva, whose hand is held against his cheek in contemplation. I feel a sense of peace that transcends religion.

한아한 삶이 있는 마을 산천을 유람하고 자연에 은거하며 청빈낙도를 추구하는 삶. 유학자들은 이런 삶을 “한아(閑雅)하다(한가롭고 고아한 정취가 있다)”고 말한다. 명나라 문인 문진형은 <장물지>에서 이런 고상한 삶을 추구하고 싶다면 다음과 같이 살기를 권한다. 집은 맑고 깨끗할 것, 서재와 누각은 그윽한 운치가 있을 것, 정원에는 아름다운 나무와 대나무를 심어 바깥의 시간이 멈춘 듯한 숲으로 만들 것. 이 이상향의 실제를 양동마을에서 봤다. 조선시대 문화와 역사, 자연을 고스란히 간직해 유네스코세계문화유산이 된 전통 마을이다. 경주 손씨와 여주 이씨를 중심으로 형성된 씨족 마을인 이곳은 500여 년이 넘는 역사가 현대에도 이어지는 정주형 문화유산으로 이름이 높다. 조선 중기 반가의 생활양식, 사상과 관습을 알 수 있는 사료로서 마을을 탐색하는 것도 유익하지만 욕심을 내려놓고 마을을 한가롭게 산책하며 둘러보기로 한다. 설창산의 능선과 그 아래 드넓게 펼쳐진 안강 평야, 수련을 품은 개울가를 따라 굽이굽이 들어선 옛집들 사이를 누비다 보면 국가민속문화재와 보물로 지정된 열여섯 채의 특별한 가옥을 쉬이 만난다.

A Refined VillageConfucian scholars used the Korean word hana to refer to the sort of life that involved spending time in nature, seeking integrity, humility and the Tao.
I witness this utopia for myself in Yangdong Village. This traditional village was named a World Cultural Heritage site for preserving its long history, which stretches back to the early part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Yangdong Village was mainly composed of members of the Son Clan of Gyeongju and the Lee Clan of Yeoju.

‘마음을 고요한 물과 같이 가지라’는 뜻으로 지은 근사한 이름을 가진 정자 ‘심수정’의 우람한 느티나무 아래에서 마을 정경을 눈에 담고 근암 고택, 상춘헌 고택, 사호당 고택의 사랑채와 뜰을 기웃거리다가, 능선 아래 자리한 송첨 종택에 들러 숨을 골랐다. 신비로운 형상으로 자란 500여 년 된 향나무 앞에서 이 집에서 태어난 이언적을 떠올렸다. 고향으로 돌아와 독락당이라는 이름의 서재를 짓고 “자신의 도를 즐기며 남의 권세는 잊고 살라”는 맹자의 가르침을 평생의 삶으로 드러낸 남자. 자연에 스며들어 혼자의 낙을 누리며 남긴 그의 자취가 ‘한아한 삶’이라는 꿈에 불을 지핀다.
양동마을 외에도 전통 한옥을 만날 수 있는 곳이 많다. 교촌마을도 그중 하나In addition to Yangdong Village, there are many places where you can see traditional Korean houses. Kyochon Village is one of them.
One way to look around is to treat the village as a living historical record of the lifestyle, ideology and customs of the Joseon nobility, but a leisurely stroll will also suffice. While roaming up, down and around, you will come across 16 special houses that have been designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage. I take a seat beneath an imposing zelkova tree beside the pavilion Simsujeong and drink in the view of the village. Then I pass through a bamboo forest and snoop around the yards of some of the old houses. By the end of my explorations, I am out of breath. Before visiting Yangdong Village, I’d thought that a life of elegance and leisure was just an illusion, but the traces of those who enjoyed being alone while communing with nature breathe new life into my abandoned dreams.

파도 소리를 따라서 경주에 야성적인 기암과 터프한 파도가 몰아치는 바다 마을도 있다. 삼국통일을 이룬 신라 제30대 왕 문무왕을 모신 수중릉, 경주문무대왕릉 일대로 가면 그런 풍경 앞에 설 수 있다. 내비게이션에 ‘경주시 문무대왕면 봉길리 30-1’을 찍으면 관광객을 위해 마련된 주차장에 닿는다. 사적을 안내하는 표지판이 비석을 대신해 왕의 유언을 후대에 전한다. “내가 죽은 뒤 바다의 용이 되어 나라를 지키고자 하니 화장하여 동해에 장사 지내라.” 그리고 고개를 들어 시선을 먼발치에 두면 갈매기 떼가 호위병처럼 서 있는 해변 너머, 대왕암으로 불리는 섬 같은 바위가 눈에 든다. 그 안쪽에 거북 모양의 돌이 들어서 있는데, 사학자들은 그 아래에 문무왕의 유골이 묻혀 있을 것이라고 추측한다. 용왕이 된 왕이 남긴 전설, 대왕암 앞에서 정성스럽게 기도를 올리는 무녀의 뒷모습과 파도의 힘찬 기세, 왕의 뜻을 기리고자 세운 절터, 감은사지와 삼층석탑이 만드는 상서로운 분위기에 한껏 취해 걷다가 다시 차에 올랐다.

Following the Sound of Waves On their first visit to Gyeongju, most people hop from site to site — from Bulguksa Temple to Seokguram Grotto, Cheomseongdae Observatory, the trendy Hwangnidan Street and so on. But not everyone knows that Gyeongju is close to wild rock formations and billowing waves. If this sounds appealing, add the Tomb of King Munmu to your itinerary. Built into a few rocks 200m from shore, the tomb honors King Munmu, who succeeded in unifying the three kingdoms that had previously jostled for control of the peninsula.
While it’s very unusual for a tomb to have an address, if you enter “30-1 Bonggil-ri, Munnudaewang-myeon, Gyeongju” into your car’s navigation system, you will arrive at a parking lot for tourists.

바닷길을 따라 남쪽으로 내려가면 무려 약 2000만 년 전에 만들어진 지각변동의 흔적, 양남 주상절리군을 만난다. 고온의 마그마 또는 용암이 지표에서 식어 생긴 주상절리는 한국 곳곳, 제주도와 울릉도, 무등산국립공원, 한탄강 일대가 대표적 관찰지. 양남면 하서리와 읍천리 사이, 약 1km 남짓한 짧은 해안 길 사이에 형성된 양남 주상절리군은 이들보다 규모는 작지만 독특한 지질과 형세로 유명하다. 대개 주상절리가 수직과 경사 방향으로 발달한 것과 달리 이곳은 수평 방향으로 드러누운 기둥들이 많은데, 그중 으뜸은 기둥이 둥글게 펼쳐진 부채꼴 주상절리다. 파도가 차가운 용암처럼 짙푸른 포말을 일으키며 기둥 틈을 파고들었다 빠져나가는 모습을 넋 놓고 바라보다 보면 어느새 사위가 어둑해진다. 동해는 일출의 바다지만 석양은 그런 것을 가리지 않고 어디에서나 아름다운 자태로 나타난다. 도시를 상징하는 랜드마크는 다 빼고, 온통 낯설고 생경한 장소와 지명으로 채운 여정에서 몰랐던 경주의 멋에 한껏 취했다.

Instead of a tombstone, a signpost with historical information conveys the king’s dying wish to future generations: “Upon my death, I seek to become a dragon of the sea that protects the kingdom, so have me cremated and hold my funeral in the East Sea.” If you lift your gaze and look beyond the beach, where seagulls stand sentry, you’ll see a rock called Daewangam. Historians believe the remains of King Munmu may have been buried under a turtle-shaped cover here.
Captivated by the legend of the king who became a dragon king and the power of the waves, I take a long walk before returning to my car. If you drive south along the coastal road, you‘ll soon arrive at Yangnam Jusangjeolli Cliff where one can see the results of a tectonic upheaval that happened about 20 million years ago. The cliff runs for about 1km along the short coastal road between Haseo-ri and Eupcheon-ri villages. Jusangjeolli are coastal stone pillars, and they occur in various places in Korea. While this cliff may be smaller than other attractions, it is famous for its unique geological features and topography. Unlike the more commonly seen vertical or sloped patterns at sites like these, Yangnam Jusangjeolli Cliff features numerous pillars laid out horizontally, including a fan-shaped jusangjeolli that spreads out like a nearly complete circle.
Letting my mind wander as I watch the dark blue foam from the waves surge between the cracks in the pillars, I soon realize that the sky has grown dark. The East Sea is famous for its sunrises, but the twilight fades away beautifully wherever you happen to be. After forgoing the city’s most-visited landmarks and embarking on a journey filled with strange and unfamiliar places, I have become intoxicated with a side of Gyeongju I had never known about.

One of the best ways to enjoy a getaway is by taking walks in the areas around your destination. On Korea’s South Sea coastline, a tourist walking trail named “Barae-gil” has been created, so those coming to the area can take in views of Namhae while walking the path.

여행의 가장 좋은 방법은 걷는 것이라고 생각한다. 사람은 시속 4km의 속도로 걷는다. 나는 이 속도가 풍경을 바라보고 느끼기에 가장 알맞은 속도라고 믿고 있다. 사람을 만나기에 가장 효과적인 속도라고 생각한다. 시속 60km의 속도로 달리는 자동차 속에서 우리는 풍경을 그저 스쳐 지날 뿐이다.
다행히 남해에는 ‘바래길’이라는 걷기 좋은 길이 만들어져 우리는 남해를 걸으며 여행할 수 있다. 바래길은 남해군 10개 읍면을 모두 경유하는 걷기 길이다. 16개 본선 코스와 3개 지선 코스가 있으며 총길이는 231km에 달한다. 본선 코스는 섬 전체를 연결하는 종주 길이며 지선 코스는 원점 회귀가 가능한 순환형 걷기 여행길이다.
모든 코스가 다 좋지만, 봄에 가장 인기가 있는 코스는 4코스 ‘고사리밭길’이다. 창선면행정복지센터에서 시작해 식포, 가인, 천포를 지나 적량마을에서 끝난다. 총길이는 15km다. 고사리 최대 산지인 창선면 가인리 일대 구릉지대를 걷는 코스로 이국적인 풍경이 일품이라고 소문이 자자하다.
People walk at an average speed of 4km an hour. To me, this seems ideal for strolling while taking in beautiful views and meeting new people. Traveling in a car, one passes through without a chance to take it all in.
A collection of walking trails called the Baraegil (Windy Trail) have been established in southern Korea’s Namhae, across two tenuously attached islands, making it easier for visitors to experience the area on foot. The Barae-gil trails pass through 10 towns and villages in Namhae-gun County, with 16 major trails and three shorter routes totaling 231km. The main courses traverse both islands, while the shorter ones allow visitors to double back and easily return to their starting point.
While all of the trails are fantastic, the most popular one is Course 4, named Fernbrake Fields (fernbrake is a vegetable eaten in Korean cuisine). Totaling 15km, this course allows visitors to explore this hilly region — which grows more fernbrake than anywhere else in Korea — and enjoy beautiful, exotic scenery.

수산리를 지나면 고사리밭으로 향하는 임도로 접어든다. 뒤돌아보니 마을이 손바닥만 하게 눈에 든다. 길은 경사가 가팔라진다. 소나무 숲길을 지나니 구릉지대가 펼쳐진다. 아, 하는 탄성이 입술 사이로 새어나온다. 한국에 이런 풍경이 있었다니. 스위스, 오스트리아의 알프스 구릉지대에서 보았던 그 유려한 곡선의 풍광에 뒤지지 않는 풍경이다.
이런 풍경이 어떻게 지금까지 알려지지 않았을까. 이 고사리밭이 모두 사유지였기 때문이다. 외부인의 출입이 통제됐다. 남해관광문화재단이 고사리 농가를 일일이 찾아가 허락을 받고서야 마침내 길을 열 수 있었다. 하지만 고사리를 수확하는 3월 말부터 6월 사이에는 출입이 제한되는데, 관광문화재단이 지정한 인솔자와 동행해야만 고사리밭에 들어갈 수 있다.
남해군 지도를 보면 남해의 땅 모양이 나비를 닮아 있다. 창선면은 오른쪽 윗날개 부분에 해당하는데 이곳에 고사리밭이 몰려 있다. 창선도에서 고사리를 본격적으로 키우기 시작한 것은 1980년대부터다. 원래 감나무 농사를 많이 지었는데, 태풍이 감나무밭을 쑥대밭으로 만들고 지나간 뒤부터 고사리를 키우기 시작했다. 지금은 고사리가 창선도 주민의 주요 소득원이 됐다. 창선농협에 따르면, 창선면의 연 고사리 생산량은 15만kg인데, 이는 전국 고사리 생산량의 30%라고 한다.
Passing through Susan-ri Village, the walking trail merges with a forest road and leads to a large fernbrake field. When I turn around, I can see the previous village in the distance, as small as the palm of my hand. The trail here is steep. I pass through a pine forest, and at a large clearing, I nearly gasp. Where else in Korea could such a beautiful site be found?
It is hard to believe that I was unaware of this scenery, but until recently, all these fernbrake fields were private land. Access for visitors was restricted, and the Namhae Foundation for Tourism and Culture was only able to open the path to the public last year after visiting each fernbrake farm and receiving permission. Access is still limited each year, however, from the end of March until June, during fernbrake harvesting. During this period, visitors may only enter with a guide designated by the foundation.
Looking at a map of Namhae-gun County, it occurs to me that the pair of islands is shaped like a butterfly. The upper part of the wing on the right is Changseon-myeon Township, where most of the fernbrake fields are located. Fernbrake only began to be grown here in earnest during the 1980s; before, it was full of persimmon orchards which were replaced by fernbrake farms after a typhoon turned the orchards into muddy swamps.

고사리밭길은 낮고 높은 언덕을 따라 파도처럼 오르내린다. 걷기에 만만한 코스는 아니다. 제법 힘이 든다. 그래도 멋진 풍경이 모든 수고를 덜어주고도 남는다. 길은 숲 사이를 지난다. 얼추 2시간 정도를 걸어온 것 같다. 산딸나무와 조팝나무, 소나무가 울창하다. 찔레꽃과 조팝나무 꽃은 아직 피지 않았다. 붉고 흰 꽃들이 폭죽이 터지듯 피면 이 길은 또 어떤 아름다움을 보여줄 것인가.
숲을 지나고 산봉우리를 하나 넘자 고사리밭 넘어 다도해가 펼쳐진다. 멀리 우윳빛 해무에 휩싸여 있는 바다. 남해 지도를 보며 남해는 바다의 봄날 위를 날아다니는 한 마리 나비가 아닐까 하고 상상한 적이 있다. 바다로 향하는 길 위에 서서, 나는 나비에 올라탄 여행자라고 생각해본다. 만약 내가 차를 타고 이 길을 지났다면, 이런 상상을 할 수 있었을까. 그러니 걷는 사람은 얼마나 행복한가. 우리는 걸으며, 왼발 앞에 오른발을 두고, 오른발 앞에 다시 왼발을 두며 행복의 방향으로 조금씩 나아간다.
길은 서서히 내리막길이다. 까마득하게 마을 하나가 보인다. 지도를 확인해보니 고두마을이다. 고사리밭길에는 간혹 트럭들이 다닌다. 곧 시작될 고사리 농사를 준비하는 농부들이다. 농약을 치지 않고 가만히 내버려두어도 자라는 게 고사리라지만, 그래도 어느 것 하나 사람 손이 가지 않으면 안 되는 것이 또 농사다. 이 넓은 구릉지대는 그냥 만들어진 것이 아니라 사람들의 손으로 하나하나 일궈서 만들어‘낸’ 것이다. 이 풍경은 자연이 아니라 사람이 빚은 것, 그래서 더 감동적이고 더 아름답다.
The fernbrake fields flow along the hills, up and down, like waves. It’s not an ideal area for strolling — walking here takes quite a bit of effort — but the views make everything worthwhile. The trail passes through the forest, and it takes me a few hours to finish the walk while gazing at the flowering dogwood, spiraea, wild oaks, spruce and bountiful pines. The wild roses and spruce trees have not yet bloomed, but once they do, the red and white flowers are sure to enhance the already stunning beauty of this country trail.
After passing through the forest and scaling a mountain peak, I can finally see a string of islands unfurling in the distance. The sea is enveloped in mist. Happy are those who walk, I think. Lucky are those who put one foot in front of the other, step by step, left and then right, in the direction they choose.
The road gradually begins to curve downhill, and a village comes into view. Looking at the map, I see that it is Godu Village.

길은 적량마을에서 끝난다. 작은 바닷가 마을이다. 골목길 담장에는 벽화가 그려져 있다. 공터마다 푸른 마늘이 자라고 있다. 골목을 빠져나오면 바다다. 어선들이 봄바람에 한가하게 흔들리고 있다.
코스를 모두 걷는 데 6시간이 걸렸다. 시속 3km가 되지 않는 느린 속도였다. 숲과 언덕을 지났고 오르막길과 내리막길을 걸었다. 느린 걸음이었지만 나는 끝까지 걸었고 마지막 목적지인 바다 앞에 섰다. 수평선 너머로 조용한 응원처럼, 반가운 인사처럼 혹은 따뜻한 위로처럼 노을이 밀려오고 있다.
노을 앞에서 사는 것도 길을 걷는 것과 별반 다르지 않을 것이라고 생각한다. 이만큼 살아보니, 이만큼 걸어보니 알겠다. 느리더라도 포기하지 않고 자기만의 속도로 걷다 보면 우리는 언젠가 목적지에 도착할 것이다. 힘들면 쉬어가면 될 것이다. 비록 끝까지 가지 않더라도 우리가 멈추는 그곳을 목적지라고 여겨도 괜찮지 않을까.
Trucks pass sporadically along the fernbrake road; farmers are out preparing for harvest season. Some say that leaving an area untouched and avoiding the use of pesticides will encourage the growth of fernbrake. However, the harvesting must be done with human hands. This vast, mountainous region of fernbrake has always been cultivated by locals. The harvesting process is a true human drama, and thus all the more moving and beautiful.
The trail ends at the small seaside town of Jeokryang Village, where murals adorn the walls of alleyways, and green garlic grows in every available spot. Leaving the humble pathway behind, I meet the sea. Here, fishing boats sway leisurely in the spring breeze.
It takes visitors around six hours to walk this particular trail, strolling at around 3km an hour. One passes through forests, walking uphill and downhill at a slow but enjoyable pace, until one reaches the sea. Those who finish in the early evening are greeted by a sunset that is like a quiet congratulations, a kindly greeting or a warm goodbye. Being able to watch the sun set over the ocean day after day provides one with the same clarity of mind as one gets from going for a walk. I realize now that it is not the speed at which one walks that is important. It doesn’t matter if one walks slowly. Walking at one’s own chosen pace, and with consistency, is what matters. If one feels tired, one should rest. Even if the end destination is never reached, isn’t wherever one chooses to stop just as good?

This walking course is rated 4/5 for difficulty. Visitors are expected to be well-prepared, bringing plenty of water, snacks and a first aid kit. There are no shops or restaurants along the trail — only at the end point, Jeokryang Village.
The dedicated mobile app for the Namhae Barae-gil trail provides information about routes useful phone numbers, transport details and accommodation tips, as well as real-time locational information to help anyone worried about getting lost. Course 5 begins at Horse Hoof Road, in Jeokryang Village, and passes by Jangpo Port and Chuseom Park, heading toward the south side of Changseon High School before ending at Jijok Straits, where visitors can see traditional-style bamboo fishing weirs. This brunch café was opened last year by Zizioli Fausto, an Italian barista who spent 15 years in Sydney, and his Korean wife, Joo-hee Bae. He settled on this spot because he was charmed by the vibe in Seongsu-dong, where quirky shops are nestled between old factory buildings. The signature dishes here are the Truffle Parma, made of truffle paste and prosciutto, and an Australian-style flat white that’s delightfully smooth and rich. Another must-try item here is the Espresso Tiramisu, which is topped with mascarpone cream and Savoiardi (lady finger) biscuits.

The showroom of Samuel Smalls sells vintage products from the 20th century, including furniture, lighting fixtures, decorative items, audio equipment and desk organizers. The space feels a bit like a hidden vault as it is tucked away in an underground level of a huge office building. Along with vintage items, the store carries its own signature products. Uniquely designed power strips and mirrors with interesting curves are especially popular here. 취향 있는 사람들이 방문하는 식료 잡화점. 유럽의 골목 상점을 연상케 하는 깔끔한 미색 외관의 먼치스앤구디스에 들어서면 귀여운 패키지의 식료품부터 심미성과 효율성을 동시에 갖춘 가정용품으로 가득한 풍경이 맞이한다. 한편에서는 매일 베이커리에서 구운 빵과 커피를 판매하며, 구매한 음식은 뒤뜰에 마련된 야외 공간에서 쉬어가며 맛볼 수 있다. 투명 유리로 이뤄진 작은 공간 글라스하우스에서 진행되는 전시 또한 즐거움을 더한다.
People with good taste patronize this grocery store, which, with its off-white exterior, looks like a backstreet shop in Europe. The store, which is a short walk from Exit 4 of Seongsu Station, is well stocked with adorably packaged food products, household goods and a wide range of knickknacks. Coffee and freshly baked bread are sold in one corner, and you can sample your purchases in the garden in the back. You’ll also enjoy checking out the artwork exhibited in Glass House, a small space in the backyard.

With its pink-colored exterior, Peaches D8NE is both a culture complex and the brick-and-mortar outlet of Peaches, a lifestyle brand devoted to car culture. Covering 2,314m2, the space includes a garage for car styling, a rooftop skateboard park and a shop selling the brand’s own clothing, plus items made in collaboration with other brands. The crowds are drawn by the trendy restaurants on the first floor, including Downtowner and Café Knotted. Be sure to also visit the Smoking Tigers hookah bar, where you’ll be greeted by the Peaches mascot, Batto, a cute fellow with a peach head and blue overalls.

This natural-wine bar opened on Yeonmujang-gil Street last autumn and has become popular as a place to go for a date. At the entrance are three amply stocked wine refrigerators. The staff suggest that customers choose a wine that suits their taste, in much the same way that they’d pick a favorite book off a shelf. Try pairing the squid dish, a memorable mixture of charcoal-grilled squid, green onions and cauliflower puree, with a tart white wine, or the sweet-potato gnocchi with a red wine.
한국가구박물관 Korea Furniture Museum
최근 TV 예능 프로그램 <유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭> BTS 편의 촬영지로 등장한 곳. BTS뿐만 아니라 시진핑 중국 국가주석, 브래드 피트, 마사 스튜어트 등 국빈 및 세계적인 유명 인사들이 다녀간 곳으로도 알려졌다. 한국의 전통 목가구를 수집하여 전시하는 특수한 전문 박물관으로 한국의 옛집 10채를 옮겨와 15년간 복원하여 공간을 만들었다. 실내장식, 꽃담(각종 무늬로 치장하여 아름답게 쌓은 담), 굴뚝, 마당 등은 과거 한국의 주거 문화를 자연스럽게 보여준다. 관람은 사전 예약제로 운영되며, 약 1시간 동안 가이드 투어를 진행한다.
BTS needed no reservation to recently appear here on the TV program You Quiz on the Block. However, for regular visitors, reservations are needed to experience traditional Korean life at the Korea Furniture Museum. Guided tours last about an hour.
This space was created by restoring 10 hanok (traditional Korean houses) over the course of 15 years. The museum’s interior decorations, flower walls, himneys and so on naturally and elegantly showcase what life was like in Korea in the past.

경복궁 Gyeongbokgung Palace
국보 제223호인 경복궁 근정전은 경복궁의 중심 건물로서 조선시대 임금 즉위식(임금 자리에 오르는 것을 백성과 조상에게 알리기 위하여 치르는 의식)이나 대례 등을 거행하던 곳이다. BTS는 지난 2020년 9월 미국 NBC <더 투나잇 쇼 스타링 지미 펄론>에서 근정전을 배경으로 한복을 차용한 의상을 입고 ‘아이돌’ 퍼포먼스를 선보였다. 경회루는 연못 위에 떠 있는 누각으로, 경복궁에서 가장 아름답다는 수양벚나무가 위치해 봄 시즌 관광객들로 붐빈다.
If you’re a BTS fan, you can’t miss a trip to a Korean palace, especially Gyeongbokgung Palace! Several of their performances, including one in 2020 that was featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, have taken place on the palace grounds.
In the past, Gyeongbokgung Palace hosted many of the Joseon Dynasty’s (1392-1910) royal ceremonies, including coronations and weddings. The pavilion Gyeonghoeru, which appears to float on a pond, is ringed by weeping cherry trees that bloom in early April.

아원고택 Awon Museum and Hotel
<2019 BTS 썸머 패키지>의 촬영 장소로 등장한 곳이다. 경상남도 진주에 있던 고택을 지금의 전라북도 완주 오성한옥마을로 옮겨놓은 한옥이다. 이 고택은 약 250년 전에 지어진 것으로, 크게 4개의 공간으로 나뉜다. <2019 BTS 썸머 패키지> 메인 커버 이미지를 촬영한 ‘천지인-만휴당’을 비롯하여 ‘사랑채-연하당’, ‘안채-설화당’, ‘별채-천목다실’이 그곳이다. 4개의 공간 모두 관람 및 숙박이 가능하다. 고택 한편에는 대나무 숲길도 조성되어 있어 여유롭게 산책하기 좋다.
This site was famously used as a filming location for the 2019 BTS SUMMER PACKAGE.
Awon Museum and Hotel is a hanok property that was moved here from the southern city of Jinju. Built about 250 years ago, this house offers a glimpse into the lives of Joseon Dynasty scholars. If you book ahead, you can even spend the night in one of the rooms.
Next to Awon Museum and Hotel is a bamboo forest walking trail. And nearby is O’s Gallery Café, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while gazing at a placid reservoir.

Wong Kar-wai’s Movies Inspired by LightWong Kar-wai is respected for his skill at infusing light, scents, atmosphere and emotions into everyday places and objects. In 2046, one of his greatest aesthetic masterpieces, he uses glimmering reds, yellows and greens to create a dream-like mood in scenes of the future as imagined by a novelist in the late 1960s. Okkio, a café in Vietnam, was founded by fans of Wong Kar-wai, and it pays homage to the movie 2046. It has a red exterior, wide windows that allow natural light to enter, LED lights that can change color and even lights that shine only on the bar area. The space fully captures the mood of Wong Kar-wai’s films.

A wide range of related products has been released ahead of the prequel series, Gotham City — take, for example, Lego’s Batcave set. Ahead of the release of The Batman, a film starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, a huge restaurant inspired by the Batman series was launched in London’s Soho District. Set design is one of Almodóvar’s most powerful cinematic tools. Throughout his long, impressive film career, Almodóvar has joined forces with art director Antxón Gómez to create scenes full of color, dynamic patterns and art, cementing his place as the representative design icon of Spain. Almodóvar’s best friend, painter Jorge Galindo, painted a watercolor for Pain and Glory, and this painting became the heart of a large-scale collaborative exhibition between Almodóvar and Galindo in Madrid.

Squid Game Becomes a Real-Life PlaygroundSquid Game, a cruel dystopian thriller that took the world by storm, unfolds in a set of fairy tale-like game halls. These are recreations of neighborhood alleys, sports fields, playgrounds and so on as they would have existed in Korea in the ’70s and ’80s. Eerily familiar, these settings make the characters in the show question reality while captivating the viewers. With Squid Game trending worldwide, countless symbols from the set designs began to spring up in the real world. The robot inspired by an illustration of a girl in old Korean textbooks and the many-tiered bunk beds can be seen at pop-up bars, shops and events around the world.

매혹의 땅, 조지아 카헤티
조지아 수도인 트빌리시에서 동쪽으로 자동차를 타고 달리면 약 2시간 거리에 있는 카헤티는 포도밭으로 유명하다. 조지아의 28개 와인 브랜드 중 18개가 카헤티에 자리 잡고 있다. 하지만 카헤티에서 즐길 수 있는 건 와인뿐만은 아니다. 중세 수도원, 역사적인 마을, 알라자니 계곡의 경사면을 따라 난 하이킹 코스 등 카헤티는 조지아에서 가장 매력적인 야외 여행지다.

1. Go on a Winery Tour
No visit to Kakheti is complete without at least one visit to a local winery. Nearly every winery in the region, from higher-end operations like Schuchmann Wines Château and Château Mere to smaller-scale village producers, welcomes visitors. Among the best wineries is the Twins Old Cellar, in Napareuli Village, which offers rustic rooms overlooking its vineyards. Twins Old Cellar is also home to an on-site winery, where you can learn about the practice of aging wine in terracotta jugs called qvevri.
2. Spend an Afternoon in Signagi
Billed as Georgia’s “city of love,” the recently restored town of Signagi is a warren of cobblestone streets and pastel houses. View the sloping hills of the Alazani Valley from the town’s medieval walls, or visit the scenic garden of Pheasant’s Tears, where U.S. vintner John Wurdeman serves up unorthodox takes on Georgian food.
3. Go on a Monastery Tour
The sloping hills of Kakheti are dotted with dozens of the country’s most beautiful monasteries, some of which remain in use. Some of the oldest monasteries in Georgia can be found in the Shuamta complex, which boasts a basilica dating back to the 5th century. The most scenic monastery, however, is Nekresi. It is reachable by hiking uphill for about 40 minutes.

4. Ride a Hot Air Balloon
Georgia is best-known for its mountains, and the Alazani Valley, which lies at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, is a perfect spot from which to survey their majesty. If you’re willing to wake up early, consider taking a hot air balloon ride. A number of local tour operators, including RIM Adventures (rimadventure.com/en/balloons) offer dawn rides.
5. Learn About Georgian Heroes
One of Georgia’s most fascinating museums is also its most beautiful. The Alexander Chavchavadze House Museum, at Tsinandali, offers a glimpse of life in 18th and 19th century Georgia. When you’re finished with the museum, linger on the grounds for a tasting of local wine.
6. 텔라비 탐험

6. Explore the City of Telavi
Kakheti’s capital, Telavi, is among the best places in the region to get a sense of the region’s rich and eclectic history. Visit Telavi’s Batonis Tsikhe (“Prince’s Fortress”), built in the late 17th century, to get a sense of the region’s Persian influence, or head to the city’s main thoroughfare, King Erekle Street, to see the city’s Soviet-era buildings. And don’t miss a visit to the city’s thriving bazaar, one of the best places in the province to buy sweet churchkhela candy.
7. Ikalto Monastery
The 12th-century poet Shota Rustaveli, author of the epic poem The Knight in the Panther’s Skin, is widely considered the most important writer of Georgia’s golden age. The ruins of the academy where he allegedly studied are still intact.

Navigating narrow switchbacks over the Julian Alps in a little hatchback, I will never forget the scenes and colors stretching out before me. A flash of green meadows, a wink of white peaks, a glimpse of blue rivers — in Slovenia, photogenic backdrops stretch in every direction.
The nation offers a seamless tapestry of sea and mountains, vast woodlands and a vibrant capital — and there’s no better way to immerse yourself than on a road trip.
“You can get everything you want — the Adriatic, the Alps, the hills, the rivers, the Pannonian Basin — all of this within three hours by car,” says Mateja Kregar Gliha, a Slovenian tourism expert. “All the time, you have the ‘wow’ effect.”
Part of Yugoslavia for much of the 20th century, Slovenia is now an independent nation in the European Union that straddles eastern and western Europe in both culture and geography. Wedged between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia offers a fusion of Mediterranean hospitality and gastronomy; Austrian order and cleanliness; and what Gliha describes as “Slavic melancholy.”
For a nation of just 2.1 million people, Slovenia punches above its weight as an all-in-one destination. Whether visiting for two days or two weeks, there’s plenty for road trippers to discover.

도시를 관통하는 류블랴나강을 따라 걷다 보면 이곳 사람들의 삶이 강을 중심으로 돌아간다는 사실을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 강가를 배회하며 이름 높은 다리들을 관광하다가 강변에 흩어져 있는 무수한 레스토랑, 카페, 와인 바 중 마음 가는 곳에 들러보자. 시간이 허락한다면 보트를 타고 강 위를 유영해보는 것도 좋다. 슬로베니아의 유명한 건축가 요제 플레츠니 크가 남긴 독특하고 개성 넘치는 건축물을 감상하다 보면 그가 꿈꾸던 류블랴나의 청사진–인간적인 도시-과 자연스럽게 조우할 수 있을 것이다.
The Center of Things
It’s only natural to gravitate to the cultural, commercial and physical center of Slovenia to get your bearings. Few things are more pleasant than a stroll around the cobbled streets and squares of Ljubljana, where the architecture will make you feel like you’re in a medieval fairytale.
Grand and powerful, Ljubljana Castle surveys the land from a hill in the middle of town. Dating back 900 years, the castle (which is actually a fort) can be reached by an electric train or a steep hike. In addition to a viewing tower, you’ll find several noteworthy restaurants and bars, including Grajska Vinoteka & Hram Strelec, where you can enjoy the view and a glass of Slovenian wine.
It only takes a few minutes to realize that life revolves around the Ljubljanica River. Stroll along the waterfront to see the famous bridges, then stop at one of the countless restaurants, wine bars or cafés. Or take a riverboat tour.

경이로운 호수
슬로베니아의 서쪽을 가로질러 달리다 보면, 율리안 알프스산맥의 기슭에 닿는다. 거기에 그림 같은 블레드 호수가 있다. 유리처럼 반짝 빛나는 호수 가운데엔 녹음이 우거진 숲으로 이뤄진 섬이 떠 있다. 섬 안, 130여m 높이의 가파른 절벽 위엔 블레드성이 탑처럼 우뚝 솟아 있다. 1004년, 주교들이 세운 것으로 전해지는 블레드성은 슬로베니아에서 가장 오래된 성이다. 성 안으로 들어서면 역사를 배울 수 있는 다양한 활동들이 준비되어 있다. 그중 근사한 프레스코화로 장식된 16세기 예배당은 꼭 들러보자.
블레드 호수는 여가와 휴식을 즐기기에도 좋은 곳이다. 호수 서쪽 가장자리에 위치한 말라 오소이니차 봉우리를 오르는 것으로 일정을 시작해보자. 25분가량의 짧은 코스로, 전망이 그만이다. 그 후 자전거를 타고 호숫가 주변을 천천히 돌다가 ‘블레드 크림 케이크’로 출출함을 달래볼 것. 바삭한 크러스트와 부드러운 커스터드 크림에 생크림과 슈거 파우더가 어우러진 이 디저트는 어여쁜 모양새만큼이나 맛도 달콤하다.
Lakes of Wonder
Cut west across the country to the base of the Julian Alps and yet another magical scene awaits: Lake Bled. Perched atop a 130m-tall cliff, overlooking the glassy lake is Bled Castle. The castle’s history dates back to 1004. Originally commissioned by local bishops for defense, it is the oldest castle in Slovenia. Inside, you’ll discover an array of historical experiences, from the 16th-century Castle Chapel, adorned with stunning frescoes, to the castle’s own Gutenberg wooden printing press.
Lake Bled is a place of history, of course, but also of relaxation and recreation. Start the morning with a 45-minute hike up to Mala Osojnica’s summit, at the western edge of the lake, for the best views of the castle. Then cycle around the water and stop to sample the area’s famous Bled cream cake. The delicacy looks as good as it tastes.

The Great Whites
Slovenia has long been known for its high-quality vineyards — and it’s easy to see why. There’s about one winery or vineyard for every 70 people in Slovenia, and the wine is so good that residents drink nearly 95% of it themselves.
In the northeast, the Styria wine region draws oenophiles from all over to sample the area’s Riesling and pinot gris, chardonnay, sauvignon and yellow muscat. To explore the area, drop your bags in Ptuj. It’s the country’s oldest city and is home to an 11th-century castle high up on the hill.
“A lot of our guests travel to Europe like three, four, eight times per year. They’ve done London, Paris and all the big cities,” says Mattej Valencicˇ ˇ, a general managing partner of Luxury Slovenia, which provides tailor-made itineraries. “So when they come to Slovenia, they realize it is an easy-going, picturesque country that’s efficient and has amazing gastronomy. They are always caught by surprise — the contrasts of Slovenia, the magic they find here.”

알프스의 낙원
블레드 호수를 뒤로하고 매혹적인 풍경의 우르시치 고개를 따라 알프스를 넘어 소차 계곡으로 내려가다 보면 천혜의 비경이 파노라마처럼 펼쳐진다. 영화 <나니아 연대기>의 배경으로 유명한 소차 계곡에선 옥빛 강이 삼림지대를 가르고 험준한 바위 협곡 사이로 폭포수가 떨어지며 양과 소가 드넓은 벌판을 한가롭게 노니는 풍경이 눈을 채운다.
이곳에서 첫 번째로 할 일은 청록빛 물이 넘실대는 코자크 개울을 따라 높이 15m의 코자크 폭포를 찾아가는 것. 아드레날린이 솟구치는 아웃도어 액티비티로 자신의 담력을 시험해도 좋다. 유럽에서 가장 긴 집라인, 산악자전거, 암벽등반, 급류 래프팅 중 선택할 수 있다.
요리로 할 수 있는 모험도 많다. 마이크로 브루어리, 미쉐린 스타 레스토랑, 합리적인 가격과 활기찬 분위기를 가진 패밀리 레스토랑, 포도원, 와인 바, 치즈 저장고 등 미식가를 위한 다채로운 선택지가 있다. 그중 ‘코바리트’는 놓치지 말 것. 파스텔 색채로 가득한 이 마을에는 슬로베니아에서 손꼽히는 맛집, 히사 프란코가 자리 잡고 있다. 배를 채운 후엔 포근한 샬레에서 밤하늘의 별을 헤며 남은 밤을 만끽하자.
Alpine Paradise
Leave the lake in the rearview mirror. Then follow the enchanting Vrsicˇ ˇ Pass over the Alps for an unforgettable descent into the Socaˇ Valley. It’s no wonder this was the set of The Chronicles of Narnia — jade rivers slice through woodlands, waterfalls plunge into craggy gorges and sheep and cattle roam wide-open fields.
“Travelers often ask, ‘Is it [really] so green? Or have the trees been planted artificially?’ It’s all real,” says Gliha.
Once you have your bearings, trace the turquoise Kozjak Stream to Kozjak Waterfall or test your mettle with a menu of intense activities, like Europe’s longest zipline, mountain biking, bouldering and white-water rafting.
Culinary adventures abound, too. There are microbreweries, Michelin-starred dining, cheap and cheerful family restaurants and more. While you’re in the area, head into the pastel-painted town of Kobarid to find celebrated Slovenian restaurant Hisaˇ Franko. Then spend the rest of the evening counting stars from your mountain chalet.

카르스트에서 해안으로
동굴 탐험은 슬로베니아에서 꼭 해야 할 경험 중 하나다. 아드리아해 방향으로 남하하면 무려 1만여 개에 달하는 카르스트 동굴과 만난다. 포스토이나는 그중 가장 잘 알려진 동굴. 24km 길이의 지하터널이 이어진 이곳은 절벽 전면에 중세시대의 성이 펼쳐지는 장관으로 유명하다. ‘땅속의 그랜드캐니언’이란 별명을 가지고 있는 슈코츠얀 동굴도 들러볼 만하다. 유네스코세계문화유산으로 지정된 이 석회암동굴은 6km에 걸쳐 뻗어 있는 작은 동굴들이 독특한 풍광을 이룬다. 약 3km 길이의 원형 통행로를 따라 걷다 보면 정적을 깨는 강과 폭포의 힘찬 물줄기 소리, 축축한 미네랄 향이 공기에 스며든 신비로운 분위기를 만끽하며 탐험할 수 있다.
이제는 남서쪽으로 향할 차례. 소금기 섞인 바닷바람이 코끝을 간질이면 중세의 성벽 도시, ‘피란’에 가까워진 것이다. 한때 베네치아공화국의 일부였던 이 도시는 크로아티아 국경 근처, 남서쪽 해안의 반도에 자리 잡고 있다. 피란의 중심은 낭만적인 분위기가 흐르는 타르티니 광장이다. 자갈이 깔린 옛길을 천천히 산책하다가 높이 솟은 성 조지 성당 안을 둘러봐도 좋겠다. 바다 위로 떨어지는 붉은 석양, 물 위에서 미끄러지듯 항해하는 배가 어우러진 풍경 앞에서 싱싱한 해산물 구이에 풍부한 풍미를 가진 로컬 화이트와인 ‘말바지야’ 한잔을 곁들이면 금상첨화다.
다음 날엔 아침 일찍 길을 나서보자. 송로버섯 사냥꾼으로 유명한 트래킹 도그들과 함께 송로버섯을 채취하는 경험을 해볼 수 있다. 점심으로는 향긋한 송로버섯을 곁들인 슬로베니아 전통 음식을 맛볼 것. 오후에는 700여 년의 유구한 역사를 가진 염전을 순례할 차례다. 스트루냔과 세초울리에는 소금꽃이라는 뜻의 ‘플뢰르 드 셀(전통 방식으로 생산되는 최고급 소금)’ 생산지로 유명한 곳이다. 이후엔 문 베이의 부드러운 모래사장에서 느긋한 휴식을 취해도 좋다.
Karst to Coast
As you head south toward the Adriatic, stop to experience at least one of Slovenia’s 10,000-plus registered karst caves. With 24km of underground tunnels and a medieval castle built into the cliff’s face, the Postojna Cave system is one of the most famous. Another option is the Škocjan Caves, nicknamed the “underground Grand Canyon.”

Downtown Los Angeles is the financial, political and cultural center of the city. In the Arts District, in particular, the creative scene is thriving. Walk freely down the streets as the city unfolds before you like an exhibition, and discover your own cultural tastes.
현재 다운타운 LA에서 가장 힙하고 예술적인 지역을 꼽는다면 단연 동쪽 끝에 자리한 아트 디스트릭트다. 수많은 신진 예술가들이 터를 잡고, 핫 플레이스가 끊임없이 생겨나는 아트 디스트릭트는 LA 문화의 중심이자 기반이 되고 있다. 이곳은 높은 빌딩 숲 사이 현대적인 문화공간이 보물처럼 자리한 다운타운 안에 새로운 활기를 불어넣으며, LA가 문화적으로 더 풍성해지는 데 기여하고 있다.

If you were to pick the trendiest and most creative part of Downtown Los Angeles, in the U.S., it would have to be the Arts District, located on the eastern end. The area continues to bring vitality to Downtown LA, with its contemporary cultural spaces placed like treasures in this concrete jungle. A place where up-and-coming artists have settled down and hip places are constantly emerging, the Arts District is the foundation of LA culture.
Now highly accessible, the Arts District wasn’t always fit for window shopping and rooftop drinking. The gritty neighborhood began as a vineyard and expanded into citrus farming, which led to the creation of railyards and warehouses. Soon, textile mills, wholesale bakeries and rubber factories sprang up. But the boom was short-lived: During the post-war years, factories migrated, and entire warehouses were abandoned. The neighborhood sat in limbo until a group of artists saw an opportunity.
“변화가 시작된 건 1980년대였습니다.” 아트 디스트릭트를 집이라 부르는 32세의 화가 모건 바라하스는 말했다. “사람들이 들어와 창고를 임대하고, 멋진 파티를 열기 시작했죠.” 이 지역은 서서히 언더그라운드 아트 신의 중심지가 되어갔다. 그 과정에서 1999년 신진 예술가들에게 창작의 기회를 제공하는 단체인 ‘아트 셰어 LA’가 등장했다. 바라하스는 지난 2018년부터 이곳에서 매니저로 근무하며, 아트 셰어 LA 건물에 있는 30개의 로프트 중 한 집에 보조금을 받아 거주하고 있다. 그는 덧붙여 설명했다. “우리는 다른 갤러리들이 빠진 덫에 걸리지 않았습니다. 비영리단체이기 때문에 활동을 지속하기 위해 작품을 판매할 필요가 없습니다.”

“In the ‘80s, it started changing,” says Morgan Barajas, a 32-year-old painter who calls the Arts District home. “People started coming in, renting out the warehouses and throwing these wild parties.” Gradually, the area developed a thriving arts scene. Out of this came Art Share LA, a grassroots organization founded in 1999. “We don’t fall into the same traps as other galleries,” explains Barajas, who works as a facilities manager at Art Share and lives in one of its subsidized lofts. “Due to our nonprofit status, we don’t need to sell art to keep the doors open.”
Real estate developers have profited off of the Arts District’s historic architecture and location, though at its heart it remains a deeply creative place. Emerging artists continue to find ways to showcase their work at nearby businesses, including Angel City Brewery. But the most direct impact comes from exhibits at places like Art Share. “Folks keep coming,” Barajas says, “and they’re asking for more.”

Vintage arcade bars have made a comeback recently, but purists remain loyal to the games at this 2014 Arts District haunt. The industrial space houses classics like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, along with rarities like Robotron and Bubble Bobble (plus a selection of 22 pinball machines), many sourced from the private collection of co-owner Scott Davids, a native Angeleno who’s spun a childhood hobby into an enviable career.

Since opening in mid-2021, this vibrant, bamboo-accented rooftop has become a staple of the Arts District’s cocktail scene: think strawberry milk punch and flor de Jamaica (hibiscus flower) swizzles. But the focus is on chef Alejandro Guzman’s sophisticated, Mexico-by-way-of-California menu, which features raw shrimp aguachile tossed with fresh cucumber and pomegranate, and pork shoulder carnitas, served with braised beans and tangy kumquat salad.

1959년, 과학 소설가이자 기자 프랭크 허버트는 오리건주의 모래언덕에 대한 잡지 기사를 쓰기 위해 해안가 사막을 전전한다. 그 집념의 취재로 쌓인 방대한 자료는 훗날 미국을 대표하는 SF소설 <듄>의 초석이 됐다. 인간의 생존과 진화, 그 사이에서 일어나는 종교, 정치, 권력 다툼을 다루며 하나의 ‘세계관’이 된 이 대하소설은 SF 장르의 고전이자 명작으로 꼽힌다.
<듄>이 출간된 1960년대 이후 영화계와 방송가에선 이 대작을 영상 위로 옮기는 시도를 해왔다. 1984년 데이비드 린치 감독의 <듄>을 비롯해 2000년 TV 시리즈로 제작된 <듄>, 2003년 <듄의 아이들>이 대표적인 예다.
그리고 2021년, 팬과 평단의 호평을 끌어낸 새로운 <듄>이 탄생했다. 캐나다 출신 영화감독 드니 빌뇌브는 원작에 등장하는 다양한 인물의 곁가지 스토리를 과감히 자른 후 주인공의 서사에 집중하며 관객의 몰입을 이끌어낸다. 영화는 오롯이 주인공 폴(티모테 샬라메)과 그의 모험이 펼쳐지는 행성인 ‘듄’에 집중한다. 자연미 넘치는 로케이션과 현대 건축양식을 반영한 세트 디자인 등으로 실재하는 행성처럼 정교하게 묘사된 모래 행성의 완벽한 디테일, 세계적인 음악감독 한스 치머가 런던과 빈의 오케스트라 연주를 통해 사운드를 섬세하게 쌓아 만든 음악도 영화 감상에 즐거움을 더한다.
In 1959, science author and journalist Frank Herbert visited coastal Oregon to research a magazine article about how the Dunes National Recreation Area was encroaching on a nearby town. The wealth of data he collected became the basis for Dune, one of the U.S.’s most renowned sci-fi novels. Dealing with themes of human survival, evolution and religious, political and power struggles, this epic novel quickly became a classic of the sci-fi genre.
Ever since Dune was published in 1965, there have been a number of attempts to transfer the great novel to a visual medium. Some of the most well-known examples are the 1984 film Dune, directed by David Lynch, and Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003), which were made for the small screen.
The 2021 film version of Dune was finally able to elicit positive reviews from fans and critics. Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve draws audiences in by boldly dividing the original into two parts, cutting the stories of many of the side characters, and focusing on the main character’s narrative. The entire film focuses on the main character, Paul (Timothée Chalamet), and Dune — the planet on which his adventures take place. Instead of computer-generated imagery, Villeneuve used locations overflowing with natural beauty and set designs that reflect a modern style of architecture. World famous musical director Hans Zimmer contributed to the film with carefully layered music produced by a variety of sources.

The year 1991 saw a fierce diplomatic war play out on the continent of Africa before North and South Korea joined the UN. In 1987, South Korea and North Korea each sent a diplomat to the Somali capital of Mogadishu to gain support for UN admission. At just that moment, rebel forces seeking to overthrow Somalia’s dictatorship incited a civil war, forcing the South and North Korean representatives to join forces under the shared goal of escaping from Mogadishu. In this movie based on a true story, master action filmmaker Seung-wan Ryoo reimagines the characters and events, adding a touch of cinematic reinterpretation.

On March 27, 1995, Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed outside his office by a hired hitman. The nonfiction book House of Gucci by Sara Gay Forden describes the details of this incident, one of the most shocking in modern Italian history. But it was master director Ridley Scott who brought the story to the big screen with a film of the same name. The lavish world of the Gucci family as they sit atop the fashion industry and the tragic stories playing out behind the scenes are unveiled through sensuous images and a dramatic narrative. This is the follow-up to the 1989 film Ghostbusters 2. The story begins as Callie, the daughter of Egon Spengler from the original Ghostbusters series, moves with her son Trevor and daughter Phoebe to small, rural Summerville to live in the house Spengler left her. A series of mysterious happenings take place around the house and village, and Grooberson, a seismologist who doubles as Phoebe’s science teacher, chases after the secrets connected to these phenomena alongside the two siblings. The film is filled with welcome sights for Ghostbusters geeks, including members from the original series, the Ecto-1 car and proton packs.

2008년 앨범 <19>로 데뷔해 통산 15회의 그래미 어워드, 12회의 브릿 어워드, 18회의 빌보드 어워드, 아카데미 주제가상 등을 수상하고 누적 4800만 장의 판매고를 기록한 아델은 부정할 수 없는 현시대 최고의 아티스트다. 노래를 쓰고 녹음할 당시의 나이로 앨범 이름을 짓는 것으로 알려져 있는 아델은 2015년 <25>를 발매한 후 6년 만인 지난해 11월 정규 4집 <30>을 발표했다. 이번 앨범에는 영화음악계의 거장 루드비그 예란손, 아델과 꾸준히 호흡을 맞춰온 프로듀서 토비아스 제소 주니어 등이 참여해 완성도를 높였다.

Since debuting with the album 19 in 2008, Adele has gone on to become one of the most recognized musical artists of all time, with 15 Grammy Awards, 12 Brit Awards, 18 Billboard Awards — and both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe award — under her belt. She has also sold over 48 million copies of her albums worldwide. Adele names her albums after the age she was when they were written and recorded, and she released her fourth studio album, 30, in November of last year. The much-awaited release came six years after her previous album, 25, in 2015. Movie music master Ludwig Göransson and famous producer Tobias Jesso Jr., who have been working with Adele for a number of years, helped with cowriting songs and producing the album.
The only full album to sell more than 1 million copies in the year of its release, 30 sold twice as many as its nearest competitor. The music video for Easy on Me — this album’s lead single — was directed by Xavier Dolan, known for the Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize-winning film Mommy and It’s Only the End of the World. Dolan also directed the music video for Adele’s 2015 hit Hello. Indeed, the Easy on Me music video begins in the very same house in which the Hello music video was set.In an interview after the release of this autobiographical album, Adele explained that she had made 30 as a way to tell her child the story of her life.

Hailing from Chicago, the 29-year-old rapper Lil Durk made his debut with the album Remember My Name in 2015 and has established himself in the rap scene with a stream of steady single and album releases ever since. He has collaborated with a range of artists. In June 2021, Lil Durk’s collaborative single with Lil Baby, Voice of the Heroes, topped both the U.S. hip-hop chart and the Billboard 200. SM Entertainment recently launched Girls on Top (GOT), a conceptually new project which sees groups of female artists showcased in new and varied combinations, each in accordance with a certain theme. The first unit featured members from various generations of K-pop groups — BoA, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon from Girls Generation, Seulgi and Wendy from Red Velvet, and Karina and Winter from Aespa. Together, they performed the dance song GOT the Beat. The newest song in the project, Step Back, has a hip-hop and R&B vibe, a strong bass line and lyrics that tell of a confident female protagonist with strong feelings for her lover.

Ted Danson is back again, and this time it’s political. Best remembered for his role in classic sitcom Cheers as Sam Malone, the legendary actor shot back into the spotlight with his acclaimed role in Netflix’s supernatural comedy sitcom, The Good Place. In his latest comedy offering, Mr. Mayor, Danson plays Neil Bremer, a retired billboard ad executive who spots an opportunity when the incumbent mayor of Los Angeles resigns due to a nervous breakdown. Bremer decides to run in the election and somehow manages to win — much to the surprise of everyone around him. Soon discovering that office politics and city politics are worlds apart, Bremer has to navigate this new role with the help of his quirky staff, as well as his politics-savvy and fiercely competitive deputy, Arpi Meskimen (Holly Hunter). Watch as Bremer lurches from one political disaster to the next — such as a ban on plastic straws that backfires and a fiasco involving the city’s iconic palm trees. The Kalahari Desert begins in southern Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe, runs through Namibia and Botswana, and ventures into northern South Africa. Despite its name, it is a land full of life. When the downpours of the rainy season soak the dry land, a kind of reed called cat’s tail paints the spaces between the trees a deep pink, and — in an instant — the desert floor becomes a sea of flowers.
