늦봄과 초여름 사이, 삼나무가 우거진 사려니숲길은 공기마저 초록빛을 띤다. 조천의 물찻오름과 서귀포의 사려니오름을 잇는 15km 길이의 이 도로는 차창을 열고 달려도, 느릿한 속도로 걸어도 제 매력을 십분 발휘한다. 길가 맨 앞에 울울창창하게 도열한 삼나무 뒤에서 수줍은 졸참나무와 서어나무, 때죽나무, 산딸나무가 사이좋게 어우러진 풍경을 만난다. 그 사이사이에서 오소리와 제주족제비, 팔색조와 참매 같은 생명체들이 인적을 피해 대자연의 야성을 지킨다.

The charm of the 15km-long forest road can be experienced through a leisurely stroll or a ride in a car with the windows down. Behind the rows of cedar trees lining the road is a harmonious mix of jolcham oak, Japanese snowbells and Korean dogwoods. It is here that creatures such as badgers, Jeju weasels and sparrows dwell, shyly avoiding the gaze of humans.

세계 열 번째 레고랜드가 한국에 문을 열었다. 2011년 첫 삽을 뜬 지 무려 11년 만에 완공된 ‘레고랜드 코리아 리조트’는 세계 최초의 ‘섬 위에 뜬 레고랜드’로 세계에서 두 번째, 아시아에선 최대 규모를 자랑한다. 의암호에 둘러싸인 섬 중도의 2만 8790m² 부지 위에 들어선 레고랜드는 40여 개의 놀이기구와 어트랙션을 갖춘 테마파크와 킹덤, 레고 프렌즈, 레고 닌자고, 해적 등 총 4개 테마로 꾸며진 154개의 객실을 갖춘 레고랜드 호텔로 나뉜다. 테마파크 안에는 디스코 스핀, 듀플로 익스프레스 열차 등의 어트랙션, 수준 높은 레고 만들기 수업을 들을 수 있는 ‘창작 공작소’, 한여름 물놀이를 즐길 수 있는 듀플로 스플래시 등 다양한 놀거리, 탈 거리, 볼거리를 갖췄다. 4월 1일 가오픈 기간을 거쳐 5월 5일 정식으로 개장한다. 방문 전 홈페이지(www.legoland.kr)에서 미리 예약해야 한다.
Legoland Lands in Korea!
The world’s 10th Legoland has opened in Korea. Completed 11 years after the project was launched, it officially opens to the public on May 5. Legoland Korea Resort is the world’s first Legoland to be constructed on an island, the second largest Legoland in the world and the largest one in Asia. It is divided into a theme park with about 40 rides and attractions and a Legoland hotel with 154 rooms. The theme park attractions include DJ’s Dizzy Disco Spin, the Duplo Express train, Lego-building workshops and Duplo Splash, where you can enjoy playing in the water in summer. The room decorations follow one of four themes: Kingdom, Lego Friends, Lego Ninjago and Pirates. Reservations must be made in advance. Book your visit on the website www.legoland.kr.

The Return of Art Basel
June in Basel, Switzerland, has been unusually quiet for the past two years, as the pandemic led to the cancellation (2020) and postponement (2021) of Art Basel. This year, the art fair will return to its regular schedule. With 289 galleries from more than 40 countries set to participate, Basel’s summer will be full of artistic vitality for the first time in a long time. One notable change to Art Basel this year is the diversity of the newly participating galleries. Joining Art Basel for the first time will be 19 galleries from Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. The event will be held at the exhibition center Messe Basel from June 16 to 19.

Performances Aplenty at Glastonbury
The U.K.’s legendary Glastonbury Festival will be held this year from June 22 to 26. With the offline festival having been canceled in 2020 and 2021, it has been three years since the last edition was held. The Glastonbury Festival is a colossal international rock festival that was first organized in 1970 by a local dairy farmer named Michael Eavis. The festival features musicians from all around the world and covers a large range of musical genres. Billie Eilish will be the first headliner of the year. She is a meaningful choice as she will be the youngest headliner in Glastonbury’s history, and the first female solo singer to headline since Adele in 2016. Bob Dylan is one of the most influential artists of the modern era, having sold more than 125 million albums worldwide in the decades since his appearance on the folk music scene in Greenwich Village, New York, in the early 1960s. The Bob Dylan Center, where you can gain insights into his music and life, will open on May 10 in the Arts District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. The massive Bob Dylan Center was designed by renowned architectural design studio Olson Kundig and features immersive cutting-edge technology in its exhibits. The permanent exhibition has been curated from a vast archive of more than 100,000 items, including handwritten drafts of lyrics, as well as essays, poems, liner notes, documentaries and music videos. In the future, the center will host various programs including performances and lectures.

Paniyiri Greek Festival Invites Visitors to #partylikeagreek
Considering how diverse its population is, it’s no surprise that Brisbane, Australia, hosts a wide range of cultural events. One of the most long-running and popular of these is the Paniyiri Greek Festival, at which participants can eat, dance and party like Greeks. Visitors can spend time trying out Greek dances, stomping on grapes, eating Greek food and enjoying live performances. There are also fun games and challenges for visitors to take part in, such as eating 25 honey puffs in one minute. In addition, there will be various events such as an art exhibition and a fashion parade. Don’t forget to take some snapshots in the Greek village that will remain in place for the duration of the festival. This year, the festival will be held on May 21 and 22.

Natural Healing
Recently, Canadian doctors have been giving an interesting prescription to sufferers of COVID-19 — time in nature. With the Prescription for Nature program, otherwise known as PaRx, doctors can offer their patients prescriptions granting them free access to national parks. The program is currently running in four provinces, including Alberta, which is a great place to experience nature. There are multiple programs available at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the province, including Dinosaur Provincial Park, the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, Waterton Glacier International Peace Park, Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and Wood Buffalo National Park.

양혜규의 첫 덴마크 개인전, <양혜규: 이중 영혼>
베를린과 서울을 기반으로 활동하며 2018년 아시아 여성 작가 최초로 독일의 권위 있는 미술상인 ‘볼프강 한 미술상’을 수상하기도 한 현대미술가 양혜규의 대규모 개인전 <양혜규: 이중 영혼>이 7월 31일까지 덴마크 국립미술관에서 개최된다. 덴마크에서의 첫 개인전인 이번 전시에서는 1994년부터 2022년까지 제작된 총 50여 점의 작품을 선보인다. 블라인드, 무빙라이트, 2가지 향의 다중적 조합으로 구성된 설치작 <치명적인 사랑> 외에도 빨래 건조대 조각 <비非-접힐 수 없는 것들, 누드>, <래커 회화> 등 다수의 주요작을 만날 수 있는 기회다. 현재 베를린 바바라 빈 갤러리에서도 양혜규 작가의 개인전이 진행 중이며, 가을에는 파리 샹탈 크루젤 갤러리에서의 개인전도 예정되어 있다.
Haegue Yang Shines
Haegue Yang, a contemporary artist based in Berlin and Seoul, was the first female Asian artist to win the prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize, in 2018. Her first solo exhibition in Denmark, Haegue Yang, Double Soul, is being held at the National Gallery of Denmark until July 31. This exhibition features more than 50 works which were created between 1994 and 2022. A number of major works are on display, including Fatal Love, Non-Foldables, Nude and Lacquer Painting. In addition, Yang’s Mesmerizing Mesh pieces are currently making their European debut at the Barbara Wien Gallery in Berlin. They will move to the Chantal Crusel Gallery in Paris this fall.

틱톡과 손잡은 영화제, 제75회 칸영화제
세계 3대 영화제로 불리는 칸영화제가 5월 17일부터 28일까지 12일간 열린다. 올해로 75회를 맞은 이번 영화제는 틱톡(TikTok)과 함께 파트너십을 맺어 더욱 주목받고 있다. 영화제 기간 동안 진행되는 레드카펫, 백스테이지, 인터뷰 등 메인 행사 영상을 틱톡을 통해 공개하고, <틱톡단편영화제>를 신설해 작품상, 각본상, 편집상 부문을 시상할 예정이다. 아직 공개되기 전이지만 칸의 공식 초청을 받은 작품들도 눈에 띈다. 톰 크루즈의 <탑건: 매버릭>을 비롯해 박찬욱 감독의 <헤어질 결심>, 고레에다 히로카즈 감독의 첫 한국영화 <브로커>가 대표적이다.
Cinematic Glory
The Cannes International Film Festival, widely considered one of the world’s top three film festivals, is being held from May 17 to 28. The festival, which marks its 75th anniversary this year, has partnered with TikTok in order to draw more attention. Videos of the main events and attractions, including the red carpet, backstage happenings and interviews will be released on TikTok throughout the festival. Some of the notable films that are debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival include Top Gun: Maverick (starring Tom Cruise, of course), Chan-wook Park’s new mystery film Decision to Leave and Kore-eda Hirokazu’s first Korean language film, Baby, Box, Broker.

현재 프랑스는 코로나19 백신 접종 완료 시 PCR 음성확인서 없이 입국이 가능하다(2022년 4월 기준). 또한 지난 3월부터 백신 패스 적용을 중지하고, 대중교통과 의료 시설을 제외한 대부분의 장소에서 마스크 착용 의무를 해제하며 방역을 대폭 완화시켰다. 여행이 한층 자유로워진 파리 속, 달라진 모습으로 여행객을 맞는 공간 3곳을 소개한다.

Samaritaine Department Store
152년 전통의 쇼핑 성지 사마리텐 백화점이 16년간의 개보수 공사를 마치고 지난해 6월 오픈했다. 백화점을 소유한 프랑스의 세계 최대 럭셔리 기업 LVMH가 1조 원가량 투입한 리노베이션을 통해, 기존 건물 ‘퐁뇌프’에 있는 아르누보의 명작인 공작새 프레스코 회화가 완벽히 복구되었다. 또한 현대적인 건물 ‘리볼리’도 신축되었는데, 불규칙한 물결 형태를 띠는 외부 유리 파사드는 단순미와 역동성을 동시에 보여준다.
Samaritaine Department Store reopened in June last year after 16 years of renovation work. LVMH, the world’s largest luxury products company and the owner of the store, invested almost $1 billion in the project. One of the highlights of the renovation was the full restoration of the top-floor Peacock Fresco, one of the department store’s art nouveau masterpieces. In addition to restoration work on the existing structures, the new contemporary building Rivoli was added. The exterior glass facade of the building was created in the shape of irregular waves, simultaneously providing a simple beauty and a sense of dynamism.

Hôtel de la Marine
4년간의 리노베이션을 거친 오텔 드 라 마린이 2021년 더욱 화려해진 모습으로 문을 열었다. 화려한 가구와 장식으로 가득한 19세기의 응접실, 콩코르드광장의 시원한 전경이 한눈에 담기는 로지아, 6000년이 넘는 역사의 방대한 예술품을 감상할 수 있는 알 타니 컬렉션 갤러리 등으로 구성된 거대한 박물관 오텔 드 라 마린에는 레스토랑과 카페, 서점 등도 자리해 다채로운 즐거움을 누릴 수 있다. 이곳의 새로운 건축적 변화 중 하나는 영국 건축가 휴 뒤통이 디자인한, 안뜰을 덮고 있는 피라미드 모양의 유리지붕이다. 이는 층층이 쌓인 유리 래미네이트 패널과 크리스털 장식을 연상시키는 거울의 조화로 완성한 아름다움으로 관람객을 압도한다.
After four years of renovation work, the Hôtel de la Marine reopened last year. It has been reinvented as a massive museum featuring a 19th century living room filled with elaborate furniture and decorations, a loggia with an impressive view of the Place de la Concorde and the huge Al Thani Collection galleries, where works of art spanning more than 6,000 years are on display. The Hôtel de la Marine also contains a restaurant, a café and a bookstore. One of the architectural changes was the addition of a pyramid-shaped roof covering the inner courtyard, a creation of British architect Hugh Dutton. This structure features a combination of layered laminated glass panels and mirrors that resemble crystal decorations, creating an aesthetic that is strikingly beautiful.

Grand Palais Éphémère
아트페어 파리, 소 에르메스, 샤넬 패션쇼 등 다양한 문화 행사가 열렸던 파리의 랜드마크 그랑 팔레가 현재 보수공사로 인해 문을 닫고 있지만, 여행객들은 실망할 필요가 없다. 그랑 팔레 에페메르가 그 자리를 대신하고 있기 때문. ‘에페메르(éphémère)’는 프랑스어로 ‘임시의’라는 뜻을 지닌다. 지난해 여름 에펠탑 끝자락 샹 드 마르스에 1만m2에 달하는 규모로 문을 연 그랑 팔레 에페메르의 모습은 기존 그랑 팔레의 외관을 연상시킨다. 빌모트 앤드 아소시에 건축사무소가 설계한 이 건물은 현시대의 요구를 반영한 친환경적인 모습이 특징인데, 2024년 그랑 팔레의 리노베이션이 끝난 이후 철거해 다양하게 재활용할 수 있도록 모듈식으로 설계한 점이 특히 눈에 띈다. 한편 이곳에서는 2년 뒤로 다가온 파리 올림픽의 유도와 레슬링 경기가 펼쳐질 예정이다.
The Grand Palais is a Paris landmark that has hosted cultural events including Art Fair Paris (FIAC), Saut Hermès and Chanel’s Fashion Week shows. Although it is currently closed for renovation work, there is no need for travelers to despair. A new structure now stands in its place — the Grand Palais Éphémère. The French word éphémère means “temporary.” The 10,000m2 Grand Palais Éphémère, which opened last year on the Champ de Mars, a green space near the Eiffel Tower, is certainly reminiscent of the Grand Palais. Designed by the architecture firm Wilmotte & Associé, the building is eco-friendly, reflecting the environmental demands of the modern era. Notably, it was designed with modules that will be recycled for a variety of purposes when the entire structure is dismantled after the reopening of the Grand Palais in 2024. France also plans to hold the judo and wrestling events here during the Paris Olympics in two years’ time.

Far from being a passing trend, Korean pop culture has become a genre in its own right and its popularity continues to rise. Film critic Yong-jun Min searches for the secret to the popularity and success of Korean pop culture, often referred to as K-content.
“한국 시장에는 몇 가지 독특한 지점이 있다. 제작과 상영이 모두 중요한 시장이란 사실이다. 한국영화 산업기반이 탄탄해서 한국영화 제작이 원활하면서도 외국영화가 시장에서 거두는 성과 또한 대단하다. 매우 건실한 영화 산업과 시장을 함께 갖고 있다고 생각한다.” 지금 인용한 문장은 2009년 드림웍스 애니메이션 부문 CEO 신분으로 한국을 방문한 제프리 카젠버그와의 인터뷰 과정에서 들었던 말을 옮긴 것이다. 한국인이 즐기는 한국 대중문화 카테고리는 영화에만 국한된 것이 아니다. 드라마와 대중음악을 비롯해 한국인이 향유하는 대중문화란 모국어로 발음되는 대부분의 것이 포괄된다. 분야별로 분포도 차이는 발생하겠지만 그래도 한국 정도면 문화라고 명명하는 대부분의 산업이 나름대로 잘 활성화된 나라라는 것이다. 물론 기저에는 다양한 굴곡도 존재하는 법이겠지만 21세기에 이르러 웰메이드라는 기치를 내걸고 내수시장에서 경쟁해온 한국 대중문화 산업은 본질적으로 이를 적극적으로 향유하는 대중을 기반으로 발전해왔다. 1990년대부터 대중음악계에서는 랩뮤직과 힙합, 솔 같은 ‘본토’ 음악을 접목한 한국적인 팝뮤직이 새롭게 대두되며 젊은 세대를 중심으로 팬덤을 형성했고, 2000년대 들어 체계적으로 육성된 아이돌 그룹의 시대가 열렸다.

Korean pop culture is not limited to film, of course, but also includes dramas and pop music. In Korea, most culture-related industries are booming in their own distinct way. While there are always ups and downs, the Korean pop culture market has a strong foundation, built as it is on the support of the public. Korean pop music began making waves during the 1990s, when artists began expressing themselves through a fusion of rap music, hip-hop and other genres. Since the 2000s, K-pop has been dominated by systematically trained idol groups.

She first appeared in place of Sung-kyu Jang on the YouTube show Workman (2019~) and then had a role in Seasons 1 and 2 of Girls High School Mystery Class (2021), which aired on the Korean streaming platform Tving. Social media exploded with talk about her acting when she played an intern journalist new to the working world in the Coupang Play original SNL Korea Reboot (2021). The first video clip of Joo in the role of an anxious 20-something racked up 7 million views. While most people only know Joo as a comedian, she actually started her career as an actress in 2019 with a short film called Did You Miss Me (AKA 5JO) and has appeared in various web dramas. On March 22 of this year, the name of a Korean author, Suzy Lee, appeared on the list of winners of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, considered the Nobel Prize of children’s literature. Having taken home a Bologna Ragazzi Award in February 2022, she was already well-known in the fairy tale world. Meanwhile, at the time of writing, young Korean novelists Bora Chung and Sang-young Park are in the running for the International Booker Prize.
Korean literature, it seems, is really beginning to bloom. According to data released in January 2022 by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, more than 300,000 copies of Nam-Joo Cho’s Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 have
been sold in 10 languages and about 160,000 copies of Han Kang’s The
Vegetarian have been sold in 13 languages.
There’s plenty of evidence that
this is not just a passing trend. For one, on global streaming sites, popular
movies and dramas based on Korean novels are garnering interest in
the original works. When K-pop stars and influencers introduce
Korean books on social media, this leads to more global sales of the
texts. Readers all over the world are being moved by the
characteristic elements of Korean literature.

The popularity of the webtoon has risen accordingly, with web searches for it jumping tenfold in Thailand and rising by a factor of 13 in Indonesia and Taiwan. Business Proposal shows that Korean melodramas, which began with Winter Sonata (2002) and continued with My Love From The Star (2013) and Crash Landing on You (2019), have attracted a highly loyal fan base in Asia. As a result, K-drama producers have been quick to note the melodramatic potential of certain webtoons. Ones set in historic times, such as The King’s Affection (2021) and The Red Sleeve (2021), have been well-received both in Korea and overseas when turned into TV dramas.

K-웹툰 원작의 K-콘텐츠 중 멜로 장르가 아시아권을 주로 겨냥한 것이라면, 최근 몇 년간 미국이나 유럽까지 포함한 글로벌 시장의 문을 두드린 건 SF, 판타지 장르다. K-좀비라는 새 장르를 연 <킹덤>, <지금 우리 학교는>이나 크리처물인 <스위트홈>, 재난물인 <지옥>, SF물인 <승리호> 같은 작품들이 해당한다. 사실 그간 대중적 수요도 분명히 있고 제작 역량도 충분했지만 드라마나 영화가 막대한 제작비 때문에 시도하지 못한 이 분야의 공백을 채운 게 웹툰이었다. 그러다 글로벌 OTT들이 본격 오리지널 시리즈에 투자하기 시작하면서 이 장르를 시도한 웹툰들이 본격 리메이크됐고, 글로벌 시장을 강타했다. 장르적 재미에 충실하면서도 공감대를 일으키는 사회적 메시지까지 담은 이 작품들이 거둔 성과 덕분에, 올해 리메이크가 예정된 웹툰 원작들 중에는 판타지 장르가 적지 않다. 저승사자들이 자살 위험이 높은 이들을 특별 관리하는 임무를 수행하는 이야기를 다룬 <내일>, 강풀 원작으로 초능력자들이 등장하는 <무빙>, 제주도를 배경으로 벌어지는 퇴마물 <아일랜드> 등이다. 전통적 한류 장르인 멜로부터 SF, 판타지까지 K-콘텐츠는 그 장르의 폭을 확장하는 중이고, 그 밑그림에는 K-웹툰이라는 든든한 원작의 보고가 존재한다. K-웹툰은 K-콘텐츠의 성공으로 더더욱 글로벌 콘텐츠 시장에서 독보적인 위치에 설 것으로 보인다. 이것이 K-웹툰과 K-콘텐츠의 시너지가 그리는 미래의 그림이다.
The trend of turning webtoons with melodramatic storylines into TV shows appears set to continue. This year’s lineup of dramas based on melodramic webtoons include Please Take Care of Me in This Life as Well, a fantasy romance involving reincarnation; Whale Star, a fairytale romance set against the backdrop of protests during Korea’s Japanese colonial period; and the second season of Yumi's Cells, which follows on the overwhelming success of the first. While these melodramas fall into the category of webtoon content targeted mainly toward Asian nations, shows based on sci-fi and fantasy webtoons have been knocking at the door of global markets, including the U.S. and Europe. Some examples are Kingdom (2019-2020) and All of Us Are Dead (2022), which paved the way for the K-zombie genre, as well as the creature horror series Sweet Home (2020), the disaster-themed Hellbound (2021) and the sci-fi film Space Sweepers (2021). This year’s lineup includes many series based on fantasy webtoons. While public demand and the capacity to produce series like these have clearly existed for some time, the massive production costs held them back. As global streaming platforms begin ramping up investment in original series, screen adaptations of webtoons have begun taking the international market by storm. And as K-content in general achieves more and more success, the original K-webtoons will begin to claim an even more dominant position in the global content market.

They have further proven their global influence by becoming the most-streamed set of artists on Spotify.

After it came out, the riveting drama Squid Game (2021) managed to dominate the Netflix Top 10 chart in 94 countries, and more than 100 million households around the world have watched it. For their roles in the show, Young-soo Oh won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor, while Jung-jae Lee and Ho-yeon Jung snagged the best male and female actor awards, respectively, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

한국영화의 역사는 국내 최초의 상설영화관 단성사에서 1919년 10월 27일 상영된 연쇄극 <의리적 구토>로 시작되었다. 한국영화가 100주년을 맞은 지난 2019년, 영화 <기생충>의 봉준호 감독이 한국인 최초로 칸영화제 황금종려상을 수상했다. 이것을 시작으로 <기생충>은 골든글로브상 외국어 영화상, 미국 배우 조합상 영화 부문 앙상블상 수상을 비롯해 미국 아카데미상 4관왕에 오르는 등 전무후무한 기록을 써 내려갔다.
The history of Korean cinema began at Danseongsa, the first permanent movie theater in Korea, on October 27, 1919, with the screening of a kino-drama called Fight for Justice. In 2019, Korean cinema celebrated its 100th birthday and Joon-ho Bong became the first Korean to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival for his movie Parasite. The movie then went on to earn a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, and four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, raising the bar significantly for foreign-language films.

Korea’s most expensive piece of art is Universe 5-IV-71 #200, by the artist Whanki Kim. In 2019, it was auctioned off at Christie’s Hong Kong for more than $10.6 million (13.1 billion won). The NFT of the piece was sold for about $600,000 (737 million won; 194 Ethereum) at an NFT auction held through XXBLUE in March of this year.

South Africa: PretoriaThe Korean Cultural Centre in South Africa
The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism established Korean cultural centers in 28 countries around the world to promote Korea. Opened last year in November, the Korean Cultural Centre in South Africa, located in the administrative capital of Pretoria, became the 33rd center. The space has a performance and exhibition hall that can seat 100, a tae kwon do practice room, a traditional culture experience room, a kitchen and a lecture room. Anyone who wants to have fun experiencing various aspects of Korean culture can sign up for weekly classes on cooking, K-pop dance and more.

The United States: New YorkGenesis House New York
Recently, a cultural space featuring Korea has emerged in the meatpacking district of Manhattan, New York. The interior of this complex cultural space is reminiscent of a hanok (traditional Korean house) and includes a Genesis vehicle showroom; Onjium, a Michelin starred restaurant from Seoul; a tea pavilion where guests can experience a tea ceremony run by the Korean Cultural Foundation Arumjigi; a library; and an underground event space. The tea pavilion overlooks the Hudson River and the High Line and embodies a space where Korean scholars, or seonbi, liked to relax while having tea. At Onjium, you can try suranchae, which is based on a recipe passed down through the generations of the noble Choi family from the ancient Korean city of Gyeongju.

The United Kingdom: LondonThe Victoria & Albert Museum’s Korean Room
The Victoria & Albert Museum, the world’s largest decorative art museum, has a space dedicated to Korea. The collection features a variety of Korean crafts, including ceramics, embroidery, lacquerware and hanbok (traditional Korean outfit) fashion accessories. The exhibition titled Hallyu! The Korean Wave will showcase the origins of the Korean Wave and provide an overview of Korea’s colorful and dynamic pop culture. The exhibition runs until June 2023.

The University of São Paulo, which was founded in 1934, is one of Brazil’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Its new Korean cultural space, the Korea Corner, utilizes Korean IT technology to display curated exhibitions on Korean language, literature, artistic and popular culture, tourism, study abroad opportunities, food and architecture. Visitors can explore K-pop, Korean films and dramas as well as experience Korean tourist attractions and traditional games through virtual reality.

폴란드 바르샤바 한국 관광기념품 소품전
<2021 대한민국 관광공모전>에서 기념품 부문 수상을 한 작품을 모아 소개하는 전시다. 한국 각 지방의 특색이 담긴 기념품을 통해 간접적으로나마 한국 관광지를 둘러본 듯한 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 대한민국 국보 114호인 ‘청자상감모란국화문참외모양병’을 본떠 만든 원목 접시와 경주 문화재를 이용한 미니 체스 세트, 상감청자 주기 세트 등 9종류의 공예 소품을 만날 수 있다. 전시는 5월 31일까지 열린다.
Poland: WarsawKorean Tourist Souvenirs Exhibition
This exhibition features award-winning work from the souvenir category of the 2021 Korea Tourism Contest. Visitors can imagine they are exploring Korean tourist attractions while observing different souvenirs that feature the characteristics of each region of Korea. Food, nine types of handicrafts and stationary are all on display, including a wooden plate modeled after Korean National Treasure No. 114, Celadon Melon-Shaped Bottle with Inlaid Peony and Chrysanthemum Design; a mini Gyeongju-style chess set; and an inlaid celadon vase. Artist Sun-mi Shin, who has built her own world of work by combining fresh materials with traditional oriental painting techniques, is holding an exhibition titled I Miss You. The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for those who wish to learn about Korean traditional culture and modern art. It runs until May 27.

Forty works on the theme of trees by well-known Korean photographers including Jung-man Kim, Dae-soo Kim, Jeong-lok Lee and Sin-wook Kim will be displayed. This exhibition allows you to experience the mysterious resonance of trees and the depth of the universe. The exhibition will run until May 13.

워커힐 호텔앤리조트, 서울
<부부의 세계>, <어쩌다 발견한 하루>, <상속자들> 등 드라마에 여러 차례 등장한 워커힐 애스톤하우스는 세계적인 인테리어 전문 회사 윌슨 앤드 어소시에이츠가 디자인했다. 약 1430m2 규모의 이 대저택은 이국적인 정취와 함께 한국적인 아름다움이 섬세하게 살아 있다. 건물 양쪽의 팔각형 첨탑과 테라코타 타일로 이루어진 지붕, 옐로 톤의 외벽 등은 주변 자연경관과 조화되어 아름다운 분위기를 연출하며, 수공예 가구와 미술품, 샹들리에, 천장의 팔각 무늬 장식 등은 애스톤하우스에 품격을 더한다. 1층 홀은 주로 연회장으로 활용되며, 2층은 2개의 침실을 비롯해 서재, 응접실, 바 등이 갖춰져 있다. 또한 사계절의 변화가 뚜렷한 아차산과 탁 트인 한강의 전경을 감상할 수 있는 애스톤하우스의 야외 가든은 한국 셀러브리티들의 럭셔리 웨딩 명소이기도 하다. 지난 3월에는 현빈과 손예진이 이곳에서 결혼식을 올렸다.

Designed by world-class interior specialists Wilson & Associates, Walker Hill Aston House has appeared in several Korean television dramas, including The World of the Married (2020) and Extraordinary You (2019). With a floorspace of around 1,430m2, this stately mansion boasts an exotic vibe as well as a distinctly Korean brand of beauty. With octagonal spires on both sides, a roof made of terra-cotta tiles and a soft yellow exterior, Aston House harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural scenery. The penthouse at Conrad Seoul appeared as the home of Ji-pyeong Han (played by Seon-ho Kim) in the drama Start-Up (2020) and served as the background to the World of Work episode of the variety show You Quiz on the Block (2018~). Several Hollywood stars have stayed here, including Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Robert Downey Jr. The spacious penthouse boasts a modern living room, dining space, office space, dressing room, bar and guestroom. Located on the 36th floor, it offers views of landmarks such as the Hangang River, Namsan Mountain and Lotte World Tower.

Forest Pension, Yangpyeong
Located not far from Seoul in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do Province, Forest Pension is a three-story stand-alone pool villa nestled on a quiet hillside. This space was created by Geum-hwan Kim, who worked as a designer for the Ambassador Hotel Group. The property has the sort of extravagance and flair you can find in a high-class hotel. Forest Pension has been used as a film set for famous TV dramas including Descendants of the Sun (2016) and Mr. Sunshine (2018). It has also hosted variety shows such as Running Man (2010~) and Delicious Rendezvous (2019-2021). Filming for Fifteen Nights on a Business Trip x Run BTS (2021), a collaboration between Korean TV network tvN and BTS, was also carried out here.

It has been featured in numerous shows, including the dramas The King: Eternal Monarch (2020), Memories of the Alhambra (2018) and Hotel Del Luna (2019). The suite is also a popular filming location for commercials and a vacation spot for celebrities. The suite is the epitome of luxury. It is located in a separate building from the main hotel with a special entrance for guests, guaranteeing maximum privacy. The main pool, and two private pools connected to the bedroom, provide the feel of an overseas resort. Located on the strip of land separating Gangneung’s Gyeongpo Beach and Gyeongpo Lake, the scenic Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo served as the set for two recent hit series: Yumi’s Cells (2021) and Business Proposal (2022). These dramas showcased several of the hotel’s spaces, including the unique exterior, which is reminiscent of a giant ship, and the high ceiling of the white-toned lobby. 코모도호텔, 부산
드라마 <사랑의 불시착> 속 ‘평양제일호텔’은 사실 부산에 있다. 1979년에 개관한 코모도호텔 부산은 조선의 왕궁을 테마로 설계되어 한국의 전통미가 그대로 살아 있다. ‘코모도(commodore)’는 해군 제독을 뜻하며, 왜구의 침입이 빈번하던 시기에 나라를 지킨 이순신 장군을 상징화했다. 이름에 걸맞게 객실에서 아름다운 부산항의 야경을 감상할 수 있다는 점은 이곳의 빼놓을 수 없는 매력이다. <사랑의 불시착>에는 전통 문양의 벽화와 청사초롱으로 장식되어 한국적인 분위기를 물씬 풍기는 로비, 극 중 ‘리정혁’과 ‘서단’의 상견례 장소였던 한식당 고담 등 호텔 곳곳이 등장했다.
Commodore Hotel, Busan
The Pyongyang Jeil Hotel, which appears in the drama Crash Landing on You (2019), is actually located in Busan. The Commodore Hotel Busan opened its doors in 1979 and was designed to look like a Joseon (1392-1910) royal palace. Crash Landing on You showcased many features of the hotel, including the lobby, which is decorated in a traditional style. The decor is just as attractive in the hotel restaurant Godam, where the families of Jeong-hyeok Ri and Dan Seo have a meal together.

쌍산재, 구례
평화로운 농촌 마을에 자리한 쌍산재는 300여 년 된 고택으로, 벼슬을 탐하지 않고 책과 자연을 벗 삼아 학문에 정진했던 조선 후기 선비의 생활상을 엿볼 수 있는 곳이다. 이곳은 <미나리>의 윤여정, <기생충>의 최우식 등 국내 배우들이 호스트가 되어 외국인 관광객을 맞는 모습을 담아낸 예능 프로그램 <윤스테이> 촬영지였다. ‘쌍산재(雙山齋)’라는 이름은 이곳에서 서당을 열어 후학을 양성했던 해주 오씨 문양공후 진사공파 23세손 오형순의 아호 ‘쌍산(雙山)’과 서재가 있는 집이라는 뜻의 ‘집 재(齋)’를 합쳐 지었다. 크고 작은 15채, 90여 칸의 방으로 이루어진 쌍산재의 정문에 들어서면 고려 이전부터 있던 샘인 당몰샘을 비롯해 사랑채와 안채, 사당이 나타나며, 죽노차밭길을 지나면 쉬어갈 수 있는 정자인 호서정이 반긴다. 가정문 안쪽으로는 서당과 경암당, 연못 등이 자리하는데, 경암당 옆 영벽문을 열면 펼쳐지는 사도 저수지의 비경을 특히 놓치지 말자.
Ssangsanjae, Gurye
죽노차밭길을 따라 걸으며 호젓한 분위기 속에서 휴식을 즐겨보자.A walk through a grove of bamboo used for tea is a deeply relaxing experience.
Ssangsanjae is a heritage estate that dates back 300 years. The complex offers a glimpse into the life of a Confucian scholar in the late-Joseon period. Ssangsanjae was used as the set for the variety show Youn’s Stay (2021), in which some of Korea’s biggest stars, including Yuh-jung Youn from Minari (2020) and Woo-shik Choi from Parasite (2019), work as hosts serving foreign tourists. The name Ssangsanjae is a combination of a name and an architectural term. The first, Ssangsan, is the pen name of Hyung-soon Oh, a 23rd-generation descendant of the Haeju Oh clan who opened a village school here to train future scholars. The second part, jae, means “house with a study.” The first things you see upon entering the front gate of Ssangsanjae, which consists of 15 buildings and 90 or so rooms, are the detached house, main building and shrine, as well as Dangmolsaem, a well that looks like it has been standing there since before the Goryeo period (918-1392). Following the bamboo path along the green tea fields, you will reach Hoseojeong Pavilion, a place to sit down for a break. The schoolhouse building, Gyeongamdang Hall and a pond are located beyond Gajeongmun Gate. Be sure not to miss the scenic beauty of Sado Reservoir, which unfolds when you open Yeongbyeok Gate, beside the hall.

1879년에 문 연 시카고미술관은 미국의 3대 미술관 중 하나로 불린다. 지난 3월, 이곳에서 새 소장작 소식을 전했을 때 목록에서 한국 작가의 이름을 봤다. 이수경. 그의 이름을 한국의 포털사이트에서 검색하면 ‘해외가 먼저 주목한’이라는 수식어와 함께, 전 세계 유수의 아트페어, 미술관, 갤러리 명칭이 따라붙는다. 베네치아비엔날레, 보스턴미술관, 로스앤젤레스카운티미술관, 영국박물관 등이 그의 대표작, <번역된 도자기>를 전시하거나 소장 목록에 올렸다. <번역된 도자기>는 깨진 도자기 조각을 금으로 이어 붙여 새로운 창조물로 다시 태어나는 과정을 담은 작품이다. 작가가 세상에 처음 선보인 것은 2001년, 작품이 큰 관심을 받기 시작한 것은 2006년 광주비엔날레에서였다. 이수경은 그때를 “‘전쟁의 상흔을 안고 있는 분단국가의 아티스트가 파괴된 전통 오브제를 이어 붙여 만든 작품’이라는 의미와 상징성에 해외 미술계가 관심을 보인 것 같다”고 회상한다. 도자기 파편을 재료로 삼겠다고 마음먹은 것은 우연히 일어난 일. 경기도 이천의 가마터를 찾아간 어느 날, 한 도예 명장이 티끌 같은 흠 때문에 공들여 만든 것을 깨뜨리는 장면에서 영감을 받았다. 지워진 오탈자처럼 버려진 조각을 한 아름 얻어와 작업실에 두고 여러 달 만지작거리다 2개의 파편이 퍼즐처럼 완벽하게 딱 들어맞았던 순간이 <번역된 도자기>의 역사가 시작된 날이다.
Type Yeesookyung’s name into a Korean search engine and the phrase “first achieved recognition abroad” pops up, followed by the names of the world’s leading art fairs, museums and galleries. The Venice Biennale, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the British Museum and many others have exhibited or possess part of Translated Vase, Yeesookyung’s signature series. For this series, gold was used to connect fragments of shattered pottery, allowing them to be reborn as parts of entirely new creations. First shown in 2001, the series began attracting attention at the 2006 Gwangju Biennale. The idea to use broken fragments of pottery occurred to Yeesookyung one day in 2001. While visiting a master potter’s workshop in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do Province, she saw the potter shatter a painstakingly made piece because of a tiny flaw.

“1980년대에 서울에서 미술 학교를 다니면서 심각하고 어려운 서양 철학서를 열심히 읽었어요. 당시엔 번역이 좀 허술해서 저만의 상상으로 내용을 채워 이해하려고 했죠. 오랜 시간이 지나 매끄럽게 번역된 것을 다시 읽었는데, 오히려 재미가 없더라고요. 그때부터 오역과 오해가 창의적이고 신비로운 것과 맞닿아 있다는 것을 믿게 됐어요. 번역된 도자기의 재료, 깨진 조각이 저에겐 상상력을 발휘할 수 있는 오역, 틈 같은 것입니다.”
파편의 물성과 역사도 작품에 의미를 더한다. 중국 단둥, 전라도 강진, 경기도 이천과 여주 등에서 구한 도자기 조각 중엔 북한 해주 지역의 사금파리도 있었다. “작은 파편 하나를 손바닥에 두고 들여다보면 그 안에 응축된 역사만큼이나 많은 이야기가 펼쳐지는 것 같습니다. 흙먼지에서 출발해 물에 개어져 하나의 몸체가 되고, 불에 들어가 완전히 다른 존재가 되었다가 깨져버려서 기능과 가치를 잃은 것. 저는 이 쓸모없게 된 것에서 ‘불안한 운명이 끝난, 자유를 얻은 존재’를 봅니다. 그래서 깨진 도자기 조각은 제게 다른 생명을 잉태하는 씨앗 같아요.”
작업의 여정은 <번역된 도자기>에 힘을 불어넣는 가장 중요한 요소다. 파편을 이어 특정한 형태로 만들려다 여러 번 실패한 후 이수경은 애쓰지 않아도 저절로 만들어지는 경지에 닿기 위해 부단한 수련의 시간을 보냈다.
“파편들의 중매쟁이가 되자, 는 마음을 먹자 그들이 스스로 작품의 최종적인 형태로 나를 인도한다는 것을 알게 됐죠. 그런 상태를 유지하기 위해 늘 손으로 무언가를 그리거나 만들었어요. 2005년 이후엔 나의 사고와 노동이 잘 맞물린 톱니바퀴처럼 동시에 시동이 걸리고, 그 몸과 마음이 협동하며 나를 예측할 수 없는 곳으로 이끄는 상태를 구축하는 시간을 보냈습니다.”
그 시기에 또 다른 역작, <불꽃>도 탄생했다. 불화나 부적을 그릴 때 쓰는 경면주사로 ‘불’을 그린 작품이다.
“가는 붓에 경면주사를 찍어서 오르락내리락하는 작은 불꽃무늬를 집중해서 펼쳐나가다 보면 몸과 마음이 유기적으로 연결되는 것을 관찰할 수 있습니다. 심리상담사의 권유로 하나의 원 안에 무언가를 그려 채워 넣는 만다라 치유법을 나만의 드로잉 형식으로 수용한 것도 마음을 탐사하는 데 도움이 됐고요.”
“The potter’s policy of smashing any ceramics that didn’t meet his standards seemed like a struggle to find the perfect word in the translation process,” Yeesookyung explains. She collected an armful of the pieces — discarded like erased typos — and fiddled with them for months back in her art studio. The moment when two fragments suddenly fit together like puzzle pieces is when Translated Vase began. “In the 1980s, while attending art school in Seoul, I read a serious, tough book of Western philosophy,” Yeesookyung says. “At the time, I thought the translation was a bit poor, so I tried to fill the gaps in my understanding using my own imagination. A long time afterward, I read a much clearer translation, and it was actually a bit boring. From then on, I came to believe that mistranslation and misunderstanding are tied up with creative and mysterious things. To me, my translated ceramic materials — the broken pieces — are a kind of mistranslation, or crack, to fill in with my imagination.” The characteristics and history of the fragments add meaning to the work. Some that she used are from South Korea while others are from Dandong, China, and the Haeju district of North Korea. “If you place a small fragment in the palm of your hand and look carefully, a whole condensed history seems to unfold before your eyes,” Yeesookyung says. “To me, a broken piece of pottery is like a seed that gives birth to new life.” What gives Translated Vase its strength is Yeesookyung’s way of letting the pieces fit effortlessly together on their own. “I decided to become a matchmaker for the fragments, and I realized that the pieces themselves were guiding me to the final art form,” she says.

정신과 몸이 긴밀히 연결되어 합동하는 경지를 위한 수행은 ‘춤’으로도 확장됐다. 캔버스에 그림을 그리기 시작하며 필력의 중요성을 깨달은 이수경은 국가무형문화재인 승무와 살풀이, 진주검무를 전수하는 전통 춤꾼 이정화에게 3년 동안 전통 춤을 배우며 몸의 감각을 끌어올렸다. “한국 춤을 배우면 나만의 붓질을 만들어낼 수 있을 것 같았습니다. 그렇게 배운 춤에 깊이 매료돼 비디오와 퍼포먼스 작업에 무용가를 세우기도 했고, 스스로 참여하기도 했죠. 어느 시점에선 나의 손 자체가 스스로 생각하고 만들며, 언제 멈춰야 하는지 아는 똑똑한 존재가 되었으면 해요. 그러기 위해 규칙적으로 다양한 기법을 연마하고 있습니다.”
지난해 새롭게 선보인 ‘달빛 왕관’ 시리즈에는 해를 거듭할수록 몸의 감각을 날카롭게 벼리고 진화시킨 이수경의 ‘지금’이 어려 있다. 십자가, 천사, 기도하는 손, 용, 요술봉 등 믿음을 상징하는 형상과 문양을 붙이고 연결한 이 조형엔 한국의 전통공예 기법인 나전 기술부터 3D 스캔, 모델링까지 작가가 오랜 기간 습득하고 개발한 기법들이 총망라된 역작이다.
Another masterpiece is Flame, a work made using cinnabar, a mineral mainly used to make Buddhist paintings or talismans.The artist, who realized the importance of each brush stroke when she began painting on canvas, sharpened her senses during the three years she spent learning traditional Korean dance under Jung-hwa Lee. “I thought if I learned Korean dance, I could create my own brush strokes,” she remarks. “At some point, I want my hands to be able to think for themselves.”

“‘달빛 왕관’ 시리즈는 이런 질문에서 출발했습니다. ‘절대 권력의 상징이자 태양처럼 빛나는 왕관은 어떻게 만들어졌을까? 그 이면엔 무엇이 감춰져 있을까? 예수와 부처, 성인의 머리 위에 묘사된 광배의 대체물이 바로 왕관이 아니었을까? 먼 옛날 고차원의 세계와 소통하는 이들의 머리 위에서 실제로 빛나는 후광을 당시 인류가 직접 눈으로 본 것일까?’” 답을 찾기 위해 이수경은 가장 높은 자의 머리 위에 얹는 왕관을 맨 아래에 두고, 그 위에 ‘믿음’의 오래된 유물들을 아래에서 위로 이어 붙여나가면서 그들만의 유기적인 세계를 창조했다. “전시장에 세운 11개의 달빛 왕관 앞에 마주 서니 마치 나 자신이 그 왕관이 된 기분이었습니다. 그 순간 내가 이 작품을 만든 이유와 메시지가 분명해졌습니다. 나 자신이 이미 완전한 존재라는 것, 내 몸이 곧 성스러운 신전이며 나의 기운은 휘황찬란한 왕관이라는 것. 실제로 이 작업을 하는 동안 나 자신도 자주 그런 기분에 휩싸였고, 감당할 수 없는 환희에 빠졌거든요.” 이수경은 작품을 보는 이들이 ‘왕관’이라는 시각적 형태를 통해 자신의 내면 속에서 빛을 발하는 영성을 발견하고, 나아가 생의 유한함이라는 한계를 넘어 죽음 이후의 삶을 상상하는 초연함을 갖게 되기를 바란다고 말한다. “요즘 내가 하고 싶은 이야기는 우리는 모두 연결되어 있다는 것, 그래서 부족함이 없고 완벽하며 아름다운 존재라는 것이에요. 나는 연결을 잃은 이(것)들을 잇고 싶습니다. 그리고 내 작품이 그 고리가 되기를 바랍니다.”
Yeesookyung is constantly evolving, as can be seen in her Moonlight Crowns series. The eleven masterpieces, modeled by connecting shapes from diverse faiths like the Christian cross, angels, dragons, magic wands and so on, were made by harnessing all her techniques and know-how, from traditional Korean skills like mother-of-pearl lacquerware to 3D scanning and modeling. “Moonlight Crown began with questions,” she says. “How does one make a crown that shines like the sun? Weren’t crowns a replacement for the halos depicted on the heads of Jesus, Buddha and saints?” In search of answers, She took a crown — an object worn on the head of the highest ranking individuals — and put it at the bottom. Then she built upwards, piling on old relics of faith in an organic manner. “When I stood in front of the 11 Moonlight Crowns in the exhibition hall, I felt as if I’d become one of them,” she muses. “At that moment, the reason I created these works, and their message, became clear — that I’m already complete. My body is a holy temple, and my energy is a dazzling crown.” Yeesookyung says that she hopes those who see these “crowns” will have their own spiritual awakening, discovering their inner light. “What I’ve been wanting to say lately is that we’re all connected,” she states. “So, there is no inadequacy, everyone is perfect and beautiful. I want to connect those who have lost their connections. And I hope my work will be the link.”

Sitting high above the sea, evidence of volcanic activity that took place tens of thousands of years ago unfolds vividly in front of my eyes, and I become curious about the feel of the ground, the texture of the water and the smell of the dirt and grass. I ready my senses and set out to enjoy the landscapes of this enticing island.

일주로 따라 섬 한 바퀴
울릉도 여행기는 대부분 곡절로 시작한다. 바다와 바람이 사납고 결항이 잦은 탓이다. 나 역시 그런 여정을 거쳐 겨우 섬에 발을 내디뎠다. 멀미로 뒤집어진 속을 기운 나는 따개비 밥 한 그릇으로 달래고, 섬의 겉을 먼저 훑기로 한다. 울릉도를 휘도는 일주로는 3년 전에 다 뚫렸다. 동으로든 서로든 내키는 방향으로 출발하면 그만. 볼거리 많은 서쪽으로 먼저 향한다. 울릉도의 구시가 격인 도동항에 섬을 ‘만질 수 있는’ 절벽 길이 있다. 저동과 도동 해안을 잇는 2.68km의 ‘행남 해안 산책로’다. 길은 도동항 터미널 옥상에서 시작한다. 절벽에 어른 둘이 붙어 걸을 만한 길을 내고, 막힌 곳엔 다리를 놓아 아이도, 노인도 쉬이 산책할 수 있다.

A Circuit Around the Island
Ilju Road, which runs around the circumference of Ulleungdo Island, was completed three years ago. From the port where I’ve arrived, I decide to head southward on the Haengnam Coastal Walk, which runs 2.68km along the Jeodong and Dodong coast. The cliffside path is full of sights, and it allows you to viscerally experience the island. The tourist centers around the island are filled with a particularly large number of geology-themed informational guidebooks, and when you walk along this path, it’s easy to see why. A series of volcanic rock structures such as sea caves, tafoni (“honeycomb weathering”), pillow lava and clinkers cause visitors to stop and gaze in wonder. If you softly run your hand over the various textures of the rock walls, what might initially seem unremarkable reveals itself to be a collection of mysterious elements brought to the surface of the earth tens of thousands of years ago.

울릉도 곳곳 관광 안내소엔 특이하게 ‘지질학’을 주제로 하는 길라잡이 책이 많은데, 이 길을 걷다 보면 까닭이 보인다. 해식동굴, 타포니, 베개용암, 클링커 같은 화산암들이 정신 차릴 틈도 없이 나타난다. 각양각색, 독특한 질감의 암벽을 손바닥으로 가만히 쓸어내리며 걷다 보면 흔한 바위에 불과했던 자연의 구성 요소가 수만 년 전 지구가 게워낸 신비로운 물질로 다가온다. 조금 더 걷다 보면 마그마가 집괴암을 뚫고 올라와 식으며 만들어진 해식동굴이 나타나고 그 아래 옥빛 바다가 펼쳐진다. 동굴을 가로지르는 다리 위에 서니 해초가 물살 따라 부드럽게 몸을 흔드는 모습, 이름 모를 물고기들의 태연한 몸짓이 눈에 깃든다. 절벽에 난 곰보 같은 타포니에 둥지를 튼 괭이갈매기를 지나 행남 등대까지 갔다가 다시 차에 올랐다.
If you walk a little further, you’re greeted by sea caves formed from magma that cooled after piercing through agglomerate rock, with the jade-green sea extending underneath. Standing on a bridge that traverses a cave opening, I watch clusters of seaweed softly swaying along with the movement of the waves, while glimmering fish nonchalantly go about their business. For the next part of my journey, I drive along the southwest coast of Ulleungdo Island, which is filled with rock landmarks given nicknames based on their unique shapes.

서에서 북으로 오르는 길엔 각종 닮은 형상이 이름이 된 바위가 많다. 나는 이 길을 ‘바위 사냥 길’로 부르고 싶다. 첫 동물은 거북. 통구미마을에 있는 거북바위다. 눈이 밝고 상상력이 풍부하면 여섯 마리에서 아홉 마리까지 보인다는데, 내겐 그저 육지로 기어 올라오는 어미 거북과 그 위에 찰싹 붙은 새끼 거북만 보일 뿐. 가까이 다가가니 밀가루 반죽을 뚝뚝 떼어 대충 붙인 것 같은 클링커와 페이스트리 속처럼 겹겹이 쌓인 용암 주름이 바위 모양보다 더 신비롭다. 투구봉 앞 사자바위와 남양 해변 근처 버섯바위, 만세 부르는 곰을 닮은 곰바위를 지나 태하항에 차를 세웠다. 이곳에 울릉 제1경으로 꼽히는 대풍감이 있다. ‘바람을 기다리는 곳’이라는 뜻을 가진 이 절벽은 옛날 울릉도 사람들이 해풍을 기다리며 닻줄을 풀어 올리던 일대다. 사람 손이 닿지 않아 희귀 식물의, 특히 향나무 자생지로 유명하다.
I dub this stretch of the path “rock-shape hunting road.” The first “animal” I see is a turtle, located in Tonggumi Village. Locals say that if you look closely and exercise your imagination, you can see anywhere from six to nine turtles, but all I can see are a mother turtle crawling on the ground and a small baby turtle on her back. After passing by Lion Rock, next to Tugubong Peak, as well as Mushroom Rock and Bear Rock — which resembles a cheering bear — near the Namyang stretch of the coast, I park at Taeha-hang Port.

대풍감을 보려면 전망대에 올라야 한다. 나무늘보처럼 움직이는 모노레일을 타고 언덕 꼭대기에 오르니 오른편으론 현포 해안선과 노인봉, 송곳봉, 코끼리바위가, 왼편으론 대풍감이 파노라마로 펼쳐진다. 다시 내려와 옛날 사람들이 ‘울릉도에 왔다 갔다는 표식’으로 쓴 황토를 캐던 황토굴과 파도가 빚은 기이한 모양의 절벽을 예술 작품처럼 감상할 수 있는 태하 해안 산책로를 차례로 둘러봤다. 현포리 앞바다의 코끼리바위까지 보려면 해가 더 필요한데 어느새 사위가 어둑하다. 이름 모를 항구에 차를 세우고 오늘은 여기까지만 달리기로 한다. 망망대해로 사라진 태양의 묘한 빛깔 잔영 앞에서 아주 깊이, 이런 후회를 했다. 아, 울릉도. 왜 이제 왔을까.
This is the location of Daepunggam Cliff, touted as the most scenic spot on Ulleungdo Island. The cliff’s name means “a place to wait for the wind.” Islanders used to wait for the sea breeze before untying their anchor cables in the old days. For beautiful views of Daepunggam Cliff, climb up to the lookout point. If you take the snail-paced monorail up to the top of the slope, you will be treated to a view of Hyeonpo-hang Port, Noinbong Peak, Songgotbong Peak and Elephant Rock on the one side, and a panorama of Daepunggam Cliff on the other. I need a bit more daylight in order to make it to Elephant Rock, but the sky has already grown dark. I park at one of the ports and decide to call it a day. As I sit in the dusk, the sun disappears below the horizon, at the edge of the boundless ocean. While taking in this scene, I let out a deep sigh of regret. “Why have I waited so long to come to this island?”

When you climb up to the Daepunggam Observation Platform, near Ulleungdo Lighthouse, you can take in the island’s entire western coastline. Elephant Rock, Songgotbong Peak, Noinbong Peak and Jugam Mongdol Beach are all included in this beautiful view.
외륜산에 둘러싸인 나리분지. 울릉도에서 유일하게 평평한 땅 위에 세워진 마을이다. The Nari Basin is surrounded by the outer rim of a volcanic crater. Ulleungdo Island’s only village built on flat land can be found here.
나리분지, 속살로 들어가는 길
울릉도엔 약 1만 9000년 전부터 5000년 전까지 다섯 번 정도의 화산 폭발이 있었다. 그 폭발의 중심, 분화구가 오랜 시간이 지나 바스러지고 그 위에 흙과 돌이 쌓여 평평해진 땅을 칼데라, 우리말로는 분지라고 부른다. 울릉도에서 유일하게 평평한 땅, 나리분지 얘기다. 차 타고 도는 일주로가 섬의 겉을 훑는 길이라면 칼데라 주변을 병풍처럼 에워싼 외륜산의 품에 안긴 나리분지는 속살을 파헤치는 길. 전국의 산꾼들-등산인과 백패커-이 계절마다 이곳을 앞다퉈 찾는 이유는 숲의 원형을 고스란히 간직한 원시림의 비경에 있다. “나리분지는 사철이 다 아름다워요. 푸름이 절정인 늦봄과 여름엔 새벽 물안개가 피어오를 때 신비로운 분위기가 감돌죠. 가을엔 알봉의 붉은 비단 단풍이 절정이고요. 겨울은 눈꽃이 벚꽃처럼 만개해 눈부신 설경이 펼쳐집니다.” 마을 초입 관광 안내소를 지키던 박순덕 문화 해설사가 기대감을 한껏 높인다.

Nari Basin, the Heart of the Island
About five volcanic eruptions took place on Ulleungdo Island between 5,000 and 19,000 years ago. Over time, the craters at the center of these explosions were filled in with mud and stone. Nari Basin is the only flat piece of land on the island. Cradled within the the outer rim of a crater as it is, the basin can be considered the heart of the island. The reason trekkers from around Korea flock here each season is the enchanting view of a forest perfectly preserved in its original state.
지도 한 장 챙겨 숲으로 들어섰다. 해발고도 986.7m의 울릉도 최고봉 성인봉과 나리분지, 울릉도 바다를 한 품에 담을 수 있는 깃대봉을 오르는 대신 평평한 숲길만 밟기로 했다. 마을에서 성인봉 기슭까지 이어지는 ‘나리분지 숲길’은 ‘울릉’의 본래 뜻, ‘수풀이 무성한 언덕’을 오감으로 만날 수 있는 길. 구불구불 제멋대로 뻗은 나무와 낙엽을 뚫고 나온 어린 명이나물, 막 새순이 돋아난 자생식물들이 분초를 다투며 눈길을 빼앗는다. 성인봉에서 발원한 물이 용출하는 신령수 터에서 산 약수를 들이켜니 허기가 차오른다. 이제 원시림이 게워낸 것들을 맛볼 차례. 나리마을을 찾는 산꾼들의 구멍가게이자 쉼터, 나리상회의 유소현 대표와 수다를 떨다가 들은 ‘명이나물의 고소한 감칠맛’이 실은 경치보다 더 궁금했다. 마을 안 산채 식당 중 한 곳에 들어가 15첩 밥상 앞에 앉았다. 도시에선 보기 힘든 명이나물 김치, 인삼처럼 사포닌이 풍부한 삼나물, 참고비와 부지깽이나물 같은 귀한 음식에 울릉도 특산주 씨껍데기 막걸리 한잔 곁들이니 더 바랄 것 하나 없는 기분. 섬의 온갖 좋은 에너지를 품은 음식을 꼭꼭 씹어 삼키며 슬그머니 ‘울릉도에 살고 싶다’는 꿈을 품었다.

19세기 울릉도 개척 시기의 생활을 엿볼 수 있는 전통가옥, 너와 투막집 At this traditional house, visitors can get a glimpse of what island life was like in the 19th century.
I pick up a map and head into the forest on foot. Instead of going up Seonginbong Peak, the highest point of the island (at 986.7m), or Gitdaebong Peak, which offers views of Nari Basin and the ocean surrounding the island, I choose to take the flat forest path. Running from the village in the basin to the foot of Seonginbong Peak, Nari Basin Forest Trail is the place to appreciate the original meaning of ulleung (slope with a lush forest), using all five senses. Young victory onion leaves sprouting through the tangled undergrowth compete with budding wild plants for my attention. After drinking the fresh mineral water that flows down from Seonginbong Peak, my stomach is growling with hunger. It is now time to experience what the virgin forest has to offer. I have been curious about the taste of wild victory onion leaves after hearing about them from So-hyeon Yu, the owner of Nari Store, a mom-and-pop business and rest area for hikers arriving in Nari Village. Choosing one of the wild vegetable restaurants in the village, I sit down to enjoy a set meal of 15 dishes, a mix of wild vegetables that are rarely found in the big city. Washing it all down with a glass of locally brewed Ssiggeopdaegi makgeolli (Korean rice wine), I feel a deep sense of satisfaction. There isn’t a place in the world I’d rather be. After soaking in the island’s positive energy, I’ve begun to harbor a dream of living here.
섬 밖에서
정오의 해는 바다를 빛으로 만든다. 물이 아니라 빛무리 위에 배가 둥둥 떠 있는 듯한 장면. 인류가 최초로 어떤 것을 보고 “아름답다”고 말했을 때, 아마도 이런 장면 앞에 서 있지 않았을까? 잔뜩 차오른 감성으로 메모장에 이런 글귀나 끄적이고 있는 여기는 관음도 꼭대기. 울릉도에서 세 번째로 큰 외도로, 하늘이 허락해야 닿을 수 있는 독도, 날씨가 허락해야 갈 수 있는 죽도와 달리 두 다리로 걸어서 입도할 수 있다. 현수교 앞, 수백 마리 괭이갈매기가 마중하는 초입을 지나 가파른 마의 계단을 오르면 관음도의 터줏대감 동백나무가 붉은 꽃잎 주단으로 인적을 반긴다. 500m 남짓한 산책로를 따라 걷다 보면 총 3개의 전망대를 만난다. 각 포인트에 서면 대나무가 많은 죽도와 울릉도에 내려온 세 선녀가 풍경에 취해 지체하다 바위로 굳어버린 삼선암을 새의 시선으로 관망할 수 있다. 섬을 떠나는 배 시간은 오후 2시. 어딘가를 더 찾아가는 대신 해발고도 106m 정상의 벤치에 엉덩이를 붙였다. 눈앞에서 두둥실 떠다니는 구름에 시선을 던지다가 잊고 있던 휴대폰을 꺼냈다. 이곳에서 보낸 사흘이 담긴 사진첩을 둘러보니 흙, 모래, 물, 돌, 바위, 나무, 풀, 꽃, 이끼 같은 것들이 가득하다. 여행지에서 카페, 맛집, 고급 숙소 대신 땅의 감촉, 물의 질감 같은 것에 관심을 둔 적이 언제였던가? 울릉도에서 머문 내내 물질의 원형에 탐닉했고, 지구라는 행성을 여행했다.
Beyond the Island
The afternoon sun turns the ocean into a sea of light. I am standing on the peak of Gwaneumdo Island, the third-largest outer island of Ulleungdo Island. Unlike Dokdo Island, which you can only travel to with a rarely granted pass, and Jukdo Island, which can only be reached when weather permits, Gwaneumdo Island is easy to reach — just walk across the bridge. The start of the suspension bridge is guarded by hundreds of black-tailed seagulls. Those walking up the steep Devil’s Staircase are greeted by the red plumage of camelia trees, the true owners of this uninhabited island. My boat leaving Ulleungdo Island departs at 2 p.m. Instead of searching for something new to see, I sit down on a bench at the peak. I gaze at the clouds gently floating in the sky, then go through the selection of pictures I’ve taken throughout my four-day trip. The shots are full of dirt, sand, water, rocks, trees, flowers and moss. When was the last time I turned my attention to things like the feel of the earth and the texture of water instead of cafés, famous restaurants and luxury resorts? Throughout my stay on this island, I’ve interacted with nature in its purest state, indulgently experiencing a rare corner of this planet.

가는 방법 가는 방법 강릉, 묵호, 포항, 울진에서 울릉도로 향하는 배가 뜨며 약 3~4시간 소요된다. 기상 상황에 따라 결항이 종종 발생하며 ‘울릉알리미’ 앱에서 하루 전 출항과 결항 여부를 확인할 수 있다. 추천 여행법 오징어 내장탕, 따개비 밥과 칼국수, 독도새우, 명이나물을 필두로 하는 산채 정식을 놓치지 말 것. 독도박물관에서 독도케이블카를 타면 바다와 마을, 산이 한눈에 담기는 전망대에 오를 수 있다. 울릉 제1경 대풍감은 태하향목관광모노레일을 타면 쉽게 닿는다. Directions Ferries to Ulleungdo Island depart from Gangneung, Mukho, Pohang and Uljin, and the trip takes three to four hours. Ferries are sometimes canceled due to bad weather, so check if the boats are running a day in advance using the Ulleung Allimi app. Travel Tips Be sure to try squid intestine soup, barnacle rice, kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), Dokdo shrimp and the wild vegetables set menu, which features victory onion. The cable car from Dokdo Museum leads to an observation deck with great views. Daepunggam Cliff can be easily reached on the Taehahyangmok Tourist Monorail.

Following the snaking Seomjingang River, in the deeply rural southern part of the Korean Peninsula, the traveler passes through the counties of Gokseong, Gurye and Hadong.

요 며칠 비가 내려 봄이 더욱 깊어졌다. 들에는 아지랑이가 몽환처럼 피어올랐고, 공기는 말랑거리고 따뜻해서 아기 손바닥을 볼에 대고 있는 것만 같았다. 이번 여행은 섬진강을 따라 간다. 곡성에서 시작해 구례를 지나 하동까지, 세상에서 가장 아름다운 봄 속으로 들어간다. 많은 이들이 섬진강 하면 하동을 떠올리지만 곡성의 섬진강도 못지않게 유명하다. 전북 임실에서 시작한 섬진강은 곡성에 이르러 비로소 강다운 모습을 만들어낸다. 그리고 구례를 지나 하동으로 흘러간다. 1970년대까지만 해도 전라도에서 섬진강 유원지라고 하면 곡성의 압록유원지를 뜻했다. 그땐 압록유원지 앞에 너른 모래벌판이 펼쳐졌다. 거기서 은어도 잡고 참게도 잡으며 사람들은 놀았다.

On this trip, my plan is to follow the long, serpentine Seomjingang River. Beginning in Gokseong-gun County and moving on to Gurye-gun, South Jeolla Province, and then Hadong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province, I encounter incredible spring scenery. For many people, Hadong is the first place that comes to mind when they think of the Seomjingang River, but this river is just as famous in Gokseong. As recently as the 1970s, visitors to the Seomjingang River Recreation Area encountered a wide sandy plain where people enjoyed catching sweetfish and crabs.

요즘 여행자들은 기차를 타러 곡성에 온다. 곡성에는 새하얀 수증기를 내뿜으며 달리는 증기기관차가 있다. 곡성역에서 약 1km 떨어진 곳에 옛 곡성역이 있는데 이곳에 가면 새까만 증기기관차를 실제로 타볼 수 있다. 곡성역은 익산역에서 출발해 여수역까지 이어지는 전라선의 한 역이었다. 철길은 섬진강변을 따라가느라 구불구불했고 기차는 속도를 내지 못했다. 결국 뒤편 산자락에 터널을 뚫고 빠른 새 길을 냈다. 옛 곡성역은 폐철로와 함께 철거 위기에 놓였지만 곡성군이 철도청으로부터 자산을 매입해 섬진강기차마을로 꾸몄다. 기차를 타고 가면 창밖으로 펼쳐지는 아름다운 섬진강 물길을 볼 수 있다.
Nowadays, visitors come to Gokseong to ride old trains that send out plumes of white steam. Located around 1km away from the new Gokseong Station, the old station is where you can ride on a steam locomotive that is painted jet black. Gokseong Station was one of many stops on the Jeolla Line, which ran from Iksan to Yeosu. The railway tracks followed the winding route of the Seomjingang River, so the trains were unable to pick up much speed. Eventually, developers bored a tunnel through the back of the hillside to create a faster route, rendering the old line obsolete. The original Gokseong Station was once at risk of being demolished along with the abandoned railway tracks, but Gokseong-gun County purchased the assets and created the Seomjingang River Train Village. Taking the train along this old route, you can see the beautiful rapids of the river flowing alongside the train.
섬진강기차마을을 지나면 옛 전라선 철길을 따라 강이 함께한다. 17번 국도도 나란히 달린다. 이 부근의 섬진강은 곡성천, 금천천, 고달천과 만나 거대한 습지를 이루는데, 이곳이 바로 침실습지다. 약 200만㎡ 규모로 형성된 습지에는 수달과 삵, 남생이, 흰꼬리수리 같은 멸종 위기 야생동물이 살아간다.
자, 이제 길은 구례로 접어든다. 구례 초입에 사성암이 있다. 백제 성왕 22년(544년)에 연기 조사가 창건했다. 본래 오산에 있는 암자라고 해서 오산암이었으나 원효, 의상, 도선, 진각 등 4명의 고승이 여기서 수행했다고 해서 사성암으로 불리게 됐다. 까마득한 절벽에 위태롭게 들어선 모습이 탄성을 자아낸다.
After passing through the Train Village, the train stays with the Seomjingang River until the river joins with several streams to form the enormous Chimsil Wetlands. The 200 hectares of wetland are home to endangered species including otters, wildcats, Chinese pond turtles and white-tailed eagles.
At this point in my journey, I am approaching Gurye. Saseongam Temple stands at the entrance to the county. It was built in the year 544, the 22nd year of King Seong of the Baekje Dynasty (18BC-AD660). Originally called Osan Temple, it later became known as Saseongam Temple (literally, Four Monks Temple) due to the four venerable monks who practiced asceticism here. The sight of the building standing perilously atop a black cliff draws exclamations from visitors.

조선시대 3대 명당자리로 불리는 운조루도 지나칠 수 없다. 풍수지리학적으로 최고의 명당터라는 ‘금환락지’에 자리 잡고 있다. 선녀가 지상으로 내려와 목욕을 한 뒤 다시 하늘로 날아오르다 금가락지를 떨어뜨린 길지라는 뜻이다.
운조루는 쌀 두 가마 반이 들어가는 통나무 쌀뒤주와 난쟁이 굴뚝으로 오가는 사람들을 불러들인다. 행랑채에 커다란 나무 뒤주가 있는데 이 뒤주 아래에 붙은 구멍 마개에는 ‘타인능해(他人能解)’라는 붓글씨가 또렷하게 씌어 있다. ‘아무나 마개를 풀어 쌀을 가져가라’는 뜻이다. 가난한 이들에게 나눔을 베푼 상징물이다.
You also can’t miss Unjoru Pavilion, known as one of the three great propitious sites of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). In geomantic terms it is located in geumhwanrakji, the most exalted of all auspicious sites.
Unjoru Pavilion summons passersby with a tiny chimney and a rice cabinet made of a single log that is just big enough to hold two and a half sacks of rice. This cabinet sits in the servants’ quarters, and painted on the cork filling a hole at the bottom is the word tainneunghae, meaning, “Let anyone remove the cork and take rice.” It is a symbol of benevolence toward the poor.
늦은 오후, 화엄사에 닿았다. 대사찰이지만 옛 당우들이나 탑비의 모양새가 모나지 않고 어디 한구석 튀는 곳이 없다. 절 마당에 들어서면 2층 누각인 각황전이 서 있다. 국내 최대 규모의 법당이다. 큰 법당이지만 단청은 일부만 했고 그마저도 빛이 바랬다. 그래서 더 좋다. 요란하지 않아 그 앞에 선 마음이 편안하고 누그럽다. 섬진강의 봄은 하동에서 절정에 달한다. 악양들판 보리밭은 찬란한 봄 햇살을 받으며 키를 쑥쑥 키운다. 강 마을 사람들은 강으로 나가 재첩잡이를 시작하고, 비탈마다 자리한 찻집에선 밤을 밝혀 차를 덖는다. 여기는 섬진강이 내려다보이는 산비탈에 자리한 자그마한 다원이다. 어젯밤 늦게 하동에 도착해 이곳에서 하루를 머물렀다. 새벽 잠결, 귓전에 졸졸졸 흐르던 것은 섬진강 물소리였던가. 아침에는 차밭 사이를 걸었다. 이 기분 좋은 봄의 햇빛들, 햇빛 속에서 여려졌다 짙어지는 봄의 초록빛들. 주인은 10여 년 전 하동으로 여행을 왔다가 섬진강 풍경에 반해 아예 이곳에 집을 짓고 눌러살게 됐다고 했다.
Late in the afternoon, I reach Hwaeomsa Temple. In the courtyard stands Gakhwangjeon Hall, a two-story building and the largest Buddhist sanctuary in Korea. Although it is a sizable hall, only part of the traditional multicolored paintwork has been completed, and even that is faded. Somehow, though, this creates a comfortable atmosphere. Spring at the Seomjingang River is most beautiful in Hadong-gun County. The barley plants in the green fields bask in the splendid spring sunlight, growing taller every day. Some of the people of Gangmaeul Village head out to the river to catch clams, while others spend all night roasting tea in the tea-houses located on every slope.

다원에서 마시는 그윽한 차 한잔. 향긋한 봄을 제대로 느끼고 즐길 수 있는 방법이다.A cup of tea sits on a table in a garden. Drinking tea is one way to properly enjoy the freshness of spring.
아담하고 예쁜 다실에서 그와 차를 나눴다. 이곳의 차는 4~5월 중 녹찻잎을 채취해 말리고 덖는다. 주인이 직접 따서 덖은 차는 진하고 무겁다. 한 모금 마시면 강한 향과 맛이 오래오래 입에 남는다. 주인은 찻상에 놓인 다기를 계속 정리한다. 비뚤어진 줄이 있으면 바로 맞춘다. 찻상 위에 놓인 다관이며 숙우, 찻잔, 탕관이 정갈하고 찻상 앞에 앉은 주인은 허리가 곧다. 편하게 마시라는 배려다. 뒤뜰에 정리할 것이 있다는 핑계로 주인은 일어선다. 그가 잠시 문을 열고 닫은 사이 봄바람이 밀려들어 와 화병의 벚나무 가지를 흔든다. 그 바람에 대출금 이자를, 이달에 챙겨야 할 집안 행사를, 미뤄둔 약속 따위를 잠시 잊는다.
하동은 야생차로 유명하다. 산기슭이 온통 차밭이다.Hadong is famous for its wild tea. The base of the mountain is covered with tea plants.
There is a small tea garden located here on a hillside overlooking the Seomjingang River. In the morning, I walk through the tea fields. The spring sunshine and the shades of green that dance amid the rays of sunlight make me feel good. Upon visiting Hadong more than a decade ago, the owner of this tea garden fell in love with the scenery of the Seomjingang River and decided to settle here. I enjoy a cup with him in a lovely little tea room. Tea in this area is made from tea leaves harvested in April or May before being dried and roasted. The owner of the establishment has picked and roasted this tea with his own hands, and the flavor is strong and heavy. A single sip is enough to leave a strong aroma in my nose and a rich taste in my mouth. The owner eventually excuses himself, saying there is something he has to sort out in the back garden. In the brief moment he opens and closes the door, the spring wind rushes in and shakes the cherry tree branches that are placed in a vase. Feeling the breeze, I briefly forget about other worldly matters.

그래, 나는 섬진강변을 따라가며 하루 이틀 생활 따위는 잊을란다. 차밭 사이를 걸으며, 이번 봄에는 내가 상처받고 싶지 않은 것과 마찬가지로 다른 누구에게도 상처를 주지 말자고 다짐한다. 세계는 막힘없이 앞으로 나아가고 있으며 지금은 그 사실을 충분히 느낄 수 있을 만큼 기분 좋은 오후, 섬진강을 따라 당도한 곳은 만발한 봄의 중심이다.
The relaxing afternoon and beautiful scenery along the river has helped me to forget about all my troubles. The ultimate destination of my journey along Seomjingang River, I realize, was a place where I can experience spring at its best.

호남고속도로 곡성IC로 빠져나와 15분쯤 달리면 기차마을이다. 섬진강기차마을(061-363-9900, www.gstrain.co.kr) 참조. 구례 화엄사 입구에 산채 요리를 잘하는 집이 몰려 있다. 하동 화개골에 자리한 차밭을 따라가다 보면 쌍계사에 닿는다. 범패(梵唄)의 발상지로도 잘 알려져 있다. 평사리 최참판댁은 대하소설 <토지>의 무대가 됐던 곳이다. 하지만 박경리 선생은 평사리에는 한 번도 오지 않았다고 한다. 하동은 재첩국이 유명하다. 재첩은 4~5월이 가장 맛있다.

Many good wild-vegetable restaurants can be found around the entrance of Hwaeomsa Temple, in Gurye. If you walk through the tea fields located in Hwagaegol, Hadong, you will find Ssanggyesa Temple, known as the birthplace of Buddhist chants. The county is also famous for shellfish soup, which is said to be best in April and May.

지난 2월 26일 한국의 골프존타워서울 미디어 스튜디오를 비롯해 중국, 일본 골프존 스튜디오 총 3곳에서 ‘신한금융투자 한-중-일 골프존 스킨스 챌린지’가 열렸다. 이번 대회는 골프존의 IT·네트워크 기술을 활용해 이루어졌다. 총상금 4만 달러(한화 약 4800만 원) 규모로 펼쳐진 이 경기는 2인 1조 18홀 팀 스킨스 방식으로 진행됐다. 대회 코스는 PGA 코스 중 가장 어렵다고 평가받는 미국 뉴욕주의 베스페이지 블랙 코스로 치러졌다. 이번 대회는 KLPGA, CLPGA, JLPGA를 대표하는 김하늘, 유현주, 쑤이샹, 리우원보, 유리 요시다와 히카리 후지타 선수가 참가해 골프 팬들의 큰 이목을 집중시켰다. 실시간 3개국 누적 조회수가 대회 종료 시점까지 20만 회를 돌파하며 골프 팬들의 큰 호응 속에 막을 내렸다.
On February 26, the Shinhan Investment Korea-China-Japan Golfzon Skins Challenge was held at three Golfzon branches: Seoul Media Studio in Korea; China’s flagship store in Shanghai; and the Golfzon in Tokyo, Japan. The competition was held using Golfzon’s IT and online networking technology. At stake in prize money was a total of $40,000 (about 48 million won), and the tournament was played as a team skins game on a digital version of the famous PGA Bethpage Black Course. News that star players from the KLPGA, CLPGA and JLPGA were appearing at the tournament drew a great deal of attention from golf fans. The competition was broadcast live in all three countries and garnered more than 200,000 views when all was said and done.

남양도예 Namyang Ceramics 1968년 도기 회사 견습공으로 시작해 무려 54년째 한길만을 걸어온 이향구 명장이 운영하는 공방. 그는 고도의 기술이 필요한 투각기법과 전통적인 아름다움이 돋보이는 그림을 새긴 백자로 특히 인정받아 지난 2005년 이천 도자기 명장이 되었다. 거대한 오름 가마가 입구에서 맞이하는 남양도예는 이향구 명장이 빚은 도자기를 전시 및 판매하는 쇼룸과 작업장 등으로 구성된다. 작업장에서는 원데이 클래스를 운영하여 명장의 지도 아래 직접 자신만의 도자기를 만들어볼 수 있다. 이는 백자 흙을 사용해 진행되며, 음각으로 이니셜이나 무늬도 새길 수 있어 특별한 기념품이 된다.
Namyang Ceramics is a workshop run by master Hyang-gu Lee, who started making pottery 54 years ago. He became an Icheon Ceramic Master Hand in 2005, receiving recognition for his ability to create breathtakingly beautiful Joseon white porcelain, which requires a high level of mastery and technique. In the one-day classes offered at the ceramics workshop, visitors can learn how to make their own ceramics out of white porcelain clay under the guidance of a ceramics master. You can carve your own patterns in the clay or add your initials to create a special souvenir of your visit.
Hyang-gu Lee first came to Icheon in 1980, and he opened his own workshop six years later in Ye’s Park.
라기환 세라믹 스튜디오 Ra Ki Hwan Ceramic Studio 벽돌로 된 외관이 시선을 사로잡는 건물에 자리한 라기환 세라믹 스튜디오에는 쇼룸뿐 아니라 라기환 작가의 집과 작업장이 한데 모여 있다. 깨끗하고도 정교하며 덜어내는 작업이 많은 점에 매력을 느껴 백자를 택했다는 라기환 작가는 ‘쓰임이 있는 도자기’를 지향한다. 식기를 제작할 때도 음식과 조화를 잘 이루며 사용이 불편하지 않도록 만든다. 이러한 고민 끝에 탄생한 식기들은 미쉐린 3스타를 받은 서울신라호텔의 한식당 ‘라연’을 비롯해, 여러 특급 호텔과 고급 레스토랑에 납품되고 있다.
Ra Ki Hwan Ceramic Studio is home to not only a showroom but also to an artist’s workshop and living quarters. Artist Ki-hwan Ra, who chose to work with white porcelain because he found it to be clean and versatile, aims to create “useful ceramics.” He makes tableware that is easy to use and that harmonizes well with the foods being served. His dishes are used at luxurious hotels and restaurants, including La Yeon, a Korean restaurant at Shilla Hotel in Seoul that has received three Michelin stars.
장훈성 공방 Jang Hun-Seong Workshop 여주대학교에서 도예를 전공한 후 8년간 한국과 일본을 오가며 여러 공방을 거친 장훈성 작가는 지난 2006년 장훈성 공방을 설립했다. 최근에는 자신만의 스타일이 담긴 차 도구나 생활 식기를 위주로 작업한다. 그의 작품은 소박한 느낌의 분청자기를 선보이는 고백달 시리즈, 궁궐의 담벼락에서 영감을 얻은 만자 무늬와 토기의 빗살을 형상화한 눈꽃 무늬를 활용한 문양 시리즈, 함경북도 회령 지방의 볏짚을 태운 재로 만든 유약인 회령유를 사용해 제작하는 회령유 시리즈로 나뉜다. 장훈성 공방의 제품은 프랑스 파리 메종 오브제 박람회에 꾸준히 출품되고 있으며, 미주, 유럽, 아시아 등에 수출되어 세계 곳곳에서 만나볼 수 있다.
The artisan Hun-seong Jang has had his own workshop since 2006. Recently, his main focus has been creating teaware and utensils. He has produced three series thus far: the Confession Moon series, in the buncheong style; the Pattern series, which comprises earthenware decorated with manja patterns inspired by palace walls and snowflake patterns; and the Hoeryeongyu series, which features a glaze made of ash from burned rice straw taken from Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province, in North Korea. His products are frequently displayed at the Maison & Objet fair in Paris, France, and are exported all over the world.
더공유 The Gong You 더공유는 청자를 기반으로 한 도자 브랜드로, 중국 도예 유학 중 연을 맺은 정병민, 유정현 작가가 대학원 과정을 마치고 돌아와 지난 2019년 시작했다. 옹기를 만들었던 증조부와 청자 1세대인 아버지 정기봉 명장 밑에서 자라 어릴 적부터 자연스럽게 도예에 입문한 정병민 작가는 청자에 대한 애정이 남다르다. 더공유는 많은 사람들이 일상 속에서 청자를 향유할 수 있도록 전통적인 기법에 현대적인 디자인을 더한 특색 있는 작업물들을 선보이고 있다. 대표적인 제품으로는 녹색빛을 띠는 녹청자로 무궁화를 형상화한 차 거름망과 전설 속의 동물 ‘산예’를 청백자로 표현한 향꽂이가 있다.
The Gong You is a celadon-based ceramic brand started in 2019 by the artists Byung-min Jung and Jung-hyun Yoo. Growing up in the shadow of his father, Ki-bong Jung, a first-generation celadon artist, Byung-min Jung naturally became interested in pottery early in life. The Gong You uses traditional techniques to make modern teawear and other objects. Some of their more popular products include a tea strainer made of greenish celadon and an incense holder in the shape of a sanye (a legendary animal) made of blue and white porcelain.

뚜또베네, 마렘마 등의 레스토랑을 거치며 실력을 쌓아온 경주환 셰프 부부가 지난해 문을 연 이탤리언 레스토랑. 이천이 고향인 남편은 주방을, 아내는 홀을 맡아 운영하고 있다. 단순히 음식만 판매하는 것이 아니라 추억을 남겨주는 호스팅을 한다는 생각으로, 예약제를 통해 소수의 손님만을 받는다. 이곳은 제철 음식을 활용한 요리들로 계절마다 메뉴가 바뀌는데, 올여름에는 토마토 살사소스를 곁들인 하지감자 라비올리를 대표적으로 선보일 예정이다. 제철 식재료는 레스토랑이 문을 닫는 휴일에 부부가 강원도와 전라도 등지의 시장을 돌아다니며 직접 구매한다고. 시그니처 메뉴인 이천 쌀을 활용해 만든 대파 아란치니도 시즌 메뉴와 함께 즐겨보자.
The Italian restaurant Trattoria Marzo, which opened last year, focuses on seasonal foods, serving different dishes each season of the year. This summer, they will serve potato ravioli with tomato sauce. When the restaurant is closed, the couple who owns it travels to markets in other regions, such as Gangwon-do Province, to purchase seasonal ingredients. Trattoria Marzo’s spring onion arancini, made using rice from Icheon, is a signature dish that is always on the menu, regardless of season, and that should not be missed.

카페웰콤은 도자를 콘셉트로 한 우아한 인테리어와 이천의 멋과 맛이 담긴 독특한 메뉴로 여행자들에게 특히 사랑받는 카페다. ‘웰콤(Wellcome)’에는 환영한다는 의미와 함께 ‘우물(well)’이라는 뜻도 담겨 있다. 카페를 구상하는 기간 동안 마을 사람들의 사랑방 역할을 했던 것에 착안했다고. 우물 형태의 테이블과 벽면을 장식한 달항아리 등 곳곳의 유니크한 인테리어 요소는 시각적인 즐거움을 선사한다. 시그니처 메뉴는 쌀밥 빙수와 옹기 티라미수. 쌀밥 빙수는 안쪽에 숨은 견과류 튀일과 우유빙수를 같이 긁어서 팥과 인절미, 현미 튀밥을 곁들여 먹는다. 예스파크 내 공방에서 구입한 옹기에 소담히 담겨 나오는 옹기 티라미수도 놓치지 말 것.
Cafe Wellcome has an elegant, ceramics-themed interior as well as a unique menu that allows visitors to experience the beauty and flavors of Icheon. The signature dishes here are iced milk, shaved to resemble a bowl of rice, and tiramisu served in earthenware. The former features tuile made of nuts under the shaved milk ice and comes with red beans, injeolmi (bean flour rice cakes) and puffed brown rice. The onggi (clay pot) tiramisu owes its soft taste to the vessel it’s served in, namely onggi made in some of the workshops in Ye’s Park.

설봉산 자락에 자리 잡은 설봉공원은 경기세계도자비엔날레와 이천도자기축제, 이천쌀문화축제 등 이천을 대표하는 축제들의 개최지이며, 넓은 호수와 인공 폭포, 산책로가 있어 휴식을 즐기기에도 좋다. 또한 1564년 이천부사 정현이 창건한 서원인 설봉서원, 도자기를 재활용해 만든 도자기 테마파크인 이천세라피아, 설봉산성에서 발굴된 유물을 비롯해 민속 유물, 공예품 등 다양한 전시품을 소장한 이천시립박물관, 한국화의 거장 월전 장우성 선생을 기리기 위한 이천시립월전미술관 등 이천의 역사와 문화를 함께 알아갈 수 있는 공간들로 가득하다.
Seolbong Park is the preferred venue for local festivals such as the World CeraMix Biennale, the Icheon Ceramics Festival and the Icheon Rice Culture Festival. Sporting a huge lake, an artificial waterfall and walking trails, the park serves as a charming place to relax. In addition, the park is home to several sites that are rich in culture and history. These include Seolbong Seowon Confucian Academy, which was founded in 1564; Icheon Cerapia, a ceramics theme park; the Icheon Museum of Folklore and Crafts, which features a large variety of handicrafts; and Woljeon Museum of Art Icheon, which was built in honor of Woo-sung Chang (1912-2005), a master of Korean painting.

Simmons Terrace, a space created by the bed brand Simmons, is a social space where you can experience various types of lifestyle. The underground section is a showroom where you can view all the Simmons products on offer and consult with the brand’s “Sleep Masters” experts. The first floor currently features the exhibition Oddly Satisfying Video, which comprises a set of eight digital art pieces. Meanwhile, the second floor is home to a brand museum called Heritage Alley. The attractions also include the Mattress Lab, where you can experience Simmons’ mattresses, and Public Market, a grocery store.

양구통일관
양구통일관은 통일을 대비하여 북한의 실상을 알 수 있는 생활용품, 사진 등을 전시해 북한에 대한 이해를 돕는 통일 교육장으로 설립되었다. 이곳에선 북한산 물품, 통일 기념품 등을 구입할 수 있다. 입장권을 구입하면 한국전쟁 당시 양구 지역에서 벌어진 전투를 기리기 위해 조성된 양구전쟁기념관, 군사분계선으로부터 1km 정도 거리에 자리한 을지전망대, 남한에서 네 번째로 발견된 땅굴인 제4땅굴을 함께 둘러볼 수 있다.

도시 하면 떠오르는 대표적인 이름, ‘뉴욕’은 공공 예술에 가장 적극적인 도시 중 한 곳이다. 누구나 1~2달러를 내고 참여할 수 있는 ‘퍼블릭 아트 펀드’가 한 예. 올봄, 뉴욕은 동물의 도시가 됐다. 파크 애비뉴 34번가를 따라 38번가까지 설치된 이드리스 비의 설치작품 얘기다. 알록달록한 컬러의 티라노사우루스 렉스와 고릴라, 곰은 2023년까지 뉴요커들의 일상에 함께한다. 디지털과 최첨단 기술로 확장된 공공 예술도 있다. 뉴욕의 인더스트리 시티 캠퍼스에 등장한 젠 르윈의 <더 풀>은 인더스트리 시티에서 진행하는 공공 예술 프로젝트, ‘콜리지온 프로젝트’의 우승작으로 100개의 반응형 디지털 서클을 바닥에 깔아 완성한 작품이다. 관람객들은 이 작품을 단순히 구경하는 것에 그치지 않고, 그 위에서 춤을 추고 뛰어놀며 자신의 몸짓, 움직임에 따라 색이 변하는 반응형 예술 작품과 함께 흥미로운 시간을 보낸다.
‘디지털’에 대해서라면 세계 그 어느 나라에도 뒤지지 않는 ‘서울’은 건물의 외벽을 통째 화폭으로 삼는 미디어아트를 선보인다. 광화문 일대를 디지털 실감 콘텐츠로 채우는 <광화시대>는 도시의 중심 광장을 전 세계 매체 창작자를 위한 공공 미디어 캔버스로 만드는 프로젝트다. 대한민국역사박물관 외벽을 ‘ㄱ 자’ 형태의 초대형 미디어 캔버스로 재탄생시킨 <광화 벽화>는 서울의 역사, 문화예술, 라이프스타일, 자연을 담은 미디어아트, 영상으로 사람들의 눈과 귀를 사로잡는다.
The Gwanghwa Mural, which incorporates cutting-edge technology
This spring, artistic animals invaded New York’s 34th and 38th Streets to see newly installed art by Idriss B. The colorful tyrannosaurus rex, gorilla, bear and other creatures will be part of the daily lives of New Yorkers until 2023. Public art has also expanded to include cutting-edge digital technologies. Jen Lewin’s The Pool, which appeared on the Industry City Campus in New York, took first prize in the Collision Project, a public art project put on by Industry City. The interactive piece consists of more than 100 reactive digital circles of light on the ground. Visitors are invited to dance and play on the circles, watching the colors change in response to their movements. In Seoul, Age of Light (Gwanghwa Sidae) is a large-scale project that transforms Gwanghwamun Square into a public canvas for media creators around the world. The Gwanghwa Mural, which turns an exterior wall of the Seoul Museum of History into an enormous L-shaped canvas, is filled with videos of the history, culture, art and nature of the city.

한편 예술과는 별 관련이 없어 보이는 도시에서도 공공 예술을 만날 수 있다. 인도 자이푸르 출신의 랜드아트 아티스트 비보르 소가니는 구자라트와 뉴델리에 각각 ‘소원을 이뤄주는 신성한 나무’ 라는 뜻을 가진 <칼파브릭샤>와 외계의 버섯 같은 독특한 모습을 가진 <더 스프라우트>를 세웠다. 스테인리스스틸로 표현한 이 압도적인 크기의 조형물을 통해 예술로 작은 지역사회부터 글로벌 커뮤니티까지 아우르고자 하는 작가의 야심을 엿볼 수 있다.
퍼블릭 아트에서 초대형 작품은 때로 전 세계를 떠들썩하게 하는 이벤트로 발전한다. 2021년 9월 18일부터 10월 3일까지 공개된 크리스토와 잔 클로드의 <포장된 개선문>이 바로 그것.
안타깝게도 코로나19 팬데믹으로 관광객이 드문 시기에 공개되긴 했지만 <포장된 개선문>은 소셜미디어와 미디어를 통해 전 세계가 공유하는 공공 예술로 자리매김했다. 덕분에 파리지엔뿐만 아니라 전 세계 사람들이 2만 5000m2의 재생 프로필렌 텍스타일로 개선문을 감싸는 장면부터 3000m가 넘는 붉은 밧줄로 텍스타일을 고정시키는 장면까지 작품의 시작과 끝을 지켜보며 <포장된 개선문>의 완성에 참여할 수 있었다. 이 작품은 오랜 시간 같은 모습으로 자리를 지켜온 파리의 역사적인 건축물이 ‘새 옷’을 입었다는 시각적인 충격과 함께 변화무쌍한 날씨, 시간에 따라 색도, 감상도 달라지는 공공 예술의 ‘가변성’이라는 매력으로 보수적인 파리지엔들을 설득한 사건이자 이벤트로 남아 있다. 덧붙이자면, 사실 파리는 현대미술을 적극적으로 활용한 공공 예술에 다소 보수적인 입장과 환경을 가진 도시다. 시내의 공원, 건축물이 대부분 문화재로 등재되어 있어 새로운 프로젝트를 허가받는 절차부터 복잡하다. 파리의 공공 예술은 특정 이벤트에 맞춰 일시에 등장했다가 사라지는 형식이 많다. 100년이 하루 같은 파리 특유의 감성을 존중하면서도 오늘을 이야기하는 예술을 향유하는, 지극히 파리다운 방법이라고 할 수 있다.
지난겨울부터 올봄까지 파리를 산책하는 기쁨을 더해준 알렉산더 콜더의 <플라잉 드래건>은 파리의 메이저 아트페어인 피악(FIAC)을 기념해 설치되었다.
There is also public art in cities that aren’t necessarily known for art. Vibhor Sogani, a land artist from Jaipur, India, installed Kalpavriksha, which means a “sacred tree that fulfills wishes,” in Gujarat. He also installed a project in New Delhi, The Sprouts, which looks like a unique alien mushroom. These sculptures, massive in scale and made from stainless steel, are impressive examples of India’s ambition to cover both local and global communities with public artworks. Some large-scale public art installations become events that move the world. One example is L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, which was displayed from September 18 to October 3, 2021. Although it was unveiled during the pandemic, images of the public art piece were shared worldwide through both traditional and social media. As a result, Parisians and foreigners alike were able to witness the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in 25,000m2 of recyclable silvery-blue polypropylene fabric, tied on with 3,000m of red rope. The historical landmark dressed in “new clothes” was startling to behold as the color and ambiance changed depending on the weather and time of day, making the installation an event in and of itself. Public art in Paris is often created for specific times or events and as such, it frequently appears and disappears. Last winter, red airplanes were installed by Alexander Calder in the Place Vendôme to add to the joy of walking around Paris. The installation will be up until this spring and was created to celebrate FIAC, a major art fair in Paris.

피악에서는 매해 시민들까지 함께 페어를 즐길 수 있도록 ‘벽을 넘어서’라는 공공 예술 프로젝트를 진행하는데, 콜더의 작품은 이 프로젝트의 메인 이벤트였다. 프랑스인들은 두서없이 걸어 다니며 도시를 향유하는 이를 일컬어 플라뇌르라는 시적인 이름으로 부른다. 이 플라뇌르들이 모이는 공원 역시 공공 예술의 메카다. 특히 튈르리 공원은 루브르와 센강이라는 파리 시내 중심가 중의 중심가에 위치해 갈 때마다 바뀌어 있다고 할 만큼 다양한 공공 예술을 소개한다. 올해는 포르투갈과 프랑스의 해인 만큼 포르투갈 출신의 컨템퍼러리 아티스트 페드르 카브리타 헤이스의 삼미신 상, <레 트루아 그라스>가 설치되어 있다. 그 밖에도 튈르리 정원에서는 루이즈 부르주아의 <웰커밍 핸즈>, 안 로셰트의 <1, 2, 3 그리고 우리>를 비롯해 다양한 작품들이 도시인들을 유혹한다. 공공 예술에 대한 파리시의 지대한 관심은 도시 외곽에서도 만날 수 있다. 파리시와 외곽 사이를 잇는 트램웨이 T3는 최근 시의 전폭적인 후원 덕택에 컨템퍼러리 공공 예술을 만날 수 있는 장소로 거듭났다. 파리 13구 트램 정거장에 설치된 디디에 마르셀의 <하늘의 바윗덩어리들>이 대표적인데, 공중에 떠다니는 바윗덩어리와 트램웨이의 조화는 도시와 산업의 시라고 할 만큼 신선한 경험을 선사한다. 벼룩시장이 있는 클리니앙쿠르 트램웨이를 환하게 밝히는 하트, 조아나 바스콘셀루스의 <파리의 하트>도 그중 하나. T3 트램웨이 프로젝트를 넘어서 파리시에서는 해마다 밸런타인데이를 맞이해 사랑에 관련된 컨템퍼러리 작품을 파리 여기저기에 설치한다는 뉴 프로젝트를 발표했다. 산책하며 도시를 향유하는 플라뇌르에게 퍼블릭 아트는 선물이다. 계절과 시간에 따라, 언제 어느 시기에 찾느냐에 따라 자연처럼 끊임없이 모습을 바꾸며 산책자를 매혹시킨다. 공공 예술은 이제 그곳에 사는 로컬뿐 아니라 동시대의 예술을 향유하는 아트 러버를 그 도시로 불러모으는 힘을 가진 존재가 됐다.

As part of FIAC, the public art project Hors les Murs is carried out every year so that citizens can enjoy the fair together. Alexander Calder’s work was the main event. Tuileries Garden, located in downtown Paris, near the Louvre Museum and the Seine River, features such a variety of public art installations that they seem to have been switched out every time you go. This year is the year of Portugal and France, so Pedro Cabrita Reis, a Portuguese artist has installed three statues known as the Les Trois Graces. Other works in the Tuileries Garden, including Louis Bourgeois’ Welcome Hands, attract city dwellers. However, one does not need to actually live in the city to be exposed to public artworks. The Tramway t3, which connects Paris to the surrounding suburbs, has recently become a place to see contemporary public art thanks to the support of the city government. Didier Marcel’s Les Rochers Dans le Ciel, installed in the tram station in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, is a prime example, with the floating blocks and tram stations creating a special harmony. In addition to the Tramway t3 project, the city of Paris also recently announced a new project that will involve installing contemporary works related to love around Paris on Valentine’s Day every year. Public art is a gift for those who like to enjoy cities by strolling around. Since it eliminates the need to buy tickets and walk into a museum, public art has the power to not only attract local residents but also visitors from abroad.

The Galápagos Islands, nestled almost 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador, is a destination that time forgot. It’s a place where adventure abounds at every turn, where it’s possible to hike up an active volcano and where one can come face-to-face with hammerhead sharks, penguins and blue-footed boobies.

갈라파고스제도를 즐기는 방법
1. 티헤레타스 언덕 하이킹
갈라파고스제도에서 가장 유명한 거주민은 푸른발부비새라 할 수 있다. 푸른발부비새를 만나려면 운동화 끈을 매고 티헤레타스 언덕을 오를 준비가 되어 있어야만 한다. 등산로는 잘 정비되어 있는 편이며, 주변으론 지역 식물이 줄지어 자라고 있다. 정상에 다다르면 수정같이 눈부신 바다가 사방에 펼쳐진 절경과 함께 절벽 옆으로 푸른발부비새의 둥지가 어우러진 장관을 볼 수 있다. 시기를 잘 맞춘다면 갓 부화한 아기 새를 만날 수 있을지도 모른다.
2. 상어, 펭귄, 바다사자와 함께 스노클링
갈라파고스제도의 험준한 바위투성이 풍경은 숨이 멎을 정도로 아름답지만, 이 섬의 진정한 모습은 수면 아래에서 볼 수 있다. 스쿠버다이빙이나 스노클링 투어에 참가해 섬 주변의 바다 동물을 만나러 가보자. 귀상어, 바다거북, 바다사자 그리고 적도 북쪽의 유일한 펭귄인 갈라파고스펭귄을 만날 수 있다.
3. 플로레아나섬에서 편지 쓰기
플로레아나섬에는 낡고 오래된 우편함이 하나 있다. 과거 고래잡이배 선원들이 친구와 가족에게 편지를 보내던 곳이다. 오늘날 이곳을 찾는 방문객도 자신의 여행에 대한 편지를 쓰고, 자신의 주소를 기재한 봉투를 우편함에 넣을 수 있다. 미래의 여행자들에게 편지를 써서 남기고, 이전 여행자들이 남겨놓은 편지 중 수신지가 자신이 사는 지역인 것을 발견했다면 집으로 돌아가 그 사람에게 직접 전달해보자.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with epic views of both the surrounding crystalline waters and a healthy colony of frigate birds that call the cliffside home. You’ll also likely be able to spot blue-footed boobies nesting up here.
2. Snorkel With Sharks and Sea Lions
While the craggy landscape of the Galápagos Islands is certainly breathtaking, the real stars of the show are found under the water’s surface. Hop aboard a scuba or snorkeling tour boat to get out and see the aquatic wildlife surrounding the islands. You will see hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, sea lions and even the Galápagos penguin — the only penguin found north of the equator.
3. Deliver a Letter From Post Office Bay
Post Office Bay on Floreana Island is host to a single old mailbox that was once used by whalers to leave messages for friends and family. Now, visitors are encouraged to write a letter about their travels and leave it in the box to be delivered by another traveler. If you find a letter addressed to someone near your home, you can pick it up and hand-deliver it to make a new friend.

섬 생활의 일상을 엿볼 수 있는 장소를 들라면 단연코 산타크루즈섬 푸에르토아요라의 수산시장이다. 시장에선 어민들이 그날 잡은 바닷가재, 농어, 쏨뱅이, 붉은 도미 등을 분류하고 판매하느라 분주하다. 부산한 시장 안에서 펠리컨 1~2마리가 뒤에 서 있더라도 놀라지 말자. 다만, 누군가 실수로 음식을 떨어뜨리면 언제라도 낚아챌 준비가 되어 있는 녀석들이다.
5. 자이언트거북 투어
산타크루즈섬에서 자이언트거북을 보지 않고서는 갈라파고스제도 여행을 했다고 할 수 없다. 자이언트거북은 약 300만 년 전 산타크루즈섬에 와 오늘날까지 살고 있는 경이로운 생명체다. 현재 멸종 위기에 처해 특별한 보호 조치가 필요하기에, 산타크루즈섬의 엘차토 보호구역과 같은 장소가 매우 중요하다. 여행자들은 이곳에서 자이언트거북을 보존하기 위해 시행되는 여러 노력에 대해 배울 수 있다.
4. Visit Puerto Ayora’s Fish Market
Get a glimpse of everyday life on the islands by visiting the fish market in Puerto Ayora, on Santa Cruz Island. You’ll find a bustling scene of fishermen sorting and selling their daily catch, including lobster, scorpionfish and red snapper. However, you may need to stand in line behind a pelican or two, who will be ready to snap up any little snacks dropped on the ground.
5. Visit Giant Tortoises on Santa Cruz Island
The giant tortoise came to the islands some 3 million years ago. Sadly, though, this remarkable species is under threat of extinction. El Chato Reserve provides the giant tortoises freedom to roam and allows visitors a chance to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.

Spend a Weekend on the Waterfront
Explore the shops, restaurants and bars of Auckland’s newest and most exciting waterfront precinct. From Commercial Bay it’s a short walk to Viaduct Harbour where boat cruises depart for locations around the Hauraki Gulf. 로컬들의 사랑방인 서커스 서커스 카페에서 잠시 차 한잔을 즐기며 쉬어 가거나, 독특한 매력을 가진 로컬 서점 ‘타임 아웃’에 들러도 좋겠다. 오클랜드 특유의 목가적인 풍광 속에 들어가고 싶다면 멀지 않은 곳에 원트리힐과 콘월 농장이 있다. 뉴질랜드의 봄인 8월부터 10월 사이에 이곳을 찾으면 어린양과 송아지가 초원에서 활기차게 뛰어노는 영화 같은 장면을 볼 수 있다.

Experience Sky-High City Views
Superb locations for taking in breathtaking views of the Auckland isthmus are the 50-some extinct volcanoes punctuating the city’s unique urban landscape. Learn about the history of Auckland’s indigenous people, the Māori, at the Maungawhau Visitor Experience Center, on the slopes of Maungwhau/Mount Eden, before negotiating boardwalks around its summit crater and continuing on to the urban village of historic Mount Eden for coffee and cake at Circus Circus café, a local favorite. With a wide selection of New Zealand literature and nonfiction, Mount Eden’s Time Out is Auckland’s best independent bookshop. Nearby, Maungakiekie (also known as One Tree Hill) crowns the trees and urban farm of Cornwall Park. The hill is enlivened with lambs and calves during New Zealand’s spring, from August to October.
Atop the extinct volcanic crater known as Pukekawa, Auckland Domain’s War Memorial Museum has superb galleries that further explain traditional Māori culture. They also cover the heritage and traditions of island countries north of New Zealand, in the South Pacific. From the museum’s steps and forecourt, there are excellent views of downtown Auckland, with its soaring Sky Tower, as well as across the Waitematā Harbor, all the way to the volcanic profile of Rangitoto Island.

랑기토토섬은 화산 폭발로 탄생한 지 800여 년밖에 안 된 비교적 젊은 섬이다. 이곳에서 할 일은 그저 걷는 것이다. 불과 수 세기 전에 만들어진 용암 벌판과 세계에서 가장 큰 포후투카와 나무가 만드는 우주 같은 풍경을 따라 1시간가량 걸어가면 해발고도 260m 높이에 위치한 정상에 쉬이 닿는다. 섬 안엔 카페가 없으므로 페리 빌딩 건너편 커머셜베이의 버드 온 어 와이어에서 구르메 치킨 샌드위치를 미리 포장해 갈 것. 뭍으로 돌아온 후엔 페리 빌딩의 인기 아이스크림 가게 아일랜드 젤라토에서 피로와 갈증을 달래보자.
Catch the Ferry to Rangitoto
From downtown Auckland’s historic Ferry Building, built in Edwardian style using brick and sandstone, ferries travel to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Rangitoto Island was created by a volcanic eruption only 800 years ago — an event recalled in Māori oral histories — and its 260m-high summit can be reached through a gentle one-hour hike through centuries-old lava fields and amid the gentle shade and dappled light of the world’s biggest forests of pohutukawa trees. There are no cafés on the island, so stock up with a gourmet chicken sandwich from Bird on a Wire, across the street from the ferry terminal, and look forward to refreshing ice-cream from Island Gelato, in the Ferry Building, when you return. Seasonal flavors have included the combinations Thai basil and mandarin as well as matcha and Belgian white chocolate.
Red wine is a specialty of Waiheke Island.

Enjoy Superb Wine on an Island Day Trip
Just a 45-minute ride from the Ferry Building, Waiheke is Auckland’s island of wine, beaches, art and adventure. The convenient No. 50B bus links the Matiatia wharf to Waiheke’s best wineries and vineyard restaurants, especially around the Onetangi Valley area, where options include Tantalus Estate, Te Motu and Stonyridge. Continue to nearby Onetangi Beach for bodysurfing on gentle southern Pacific waves, or oceanfront dining at Three Seven Two or Ki Mahā. A highlight of Three Seven Two’s menu is the creamed paua (a New Zealand shellfish) with native spinach and potato sourdough bread. Try it with a seasonal beer from Waiheke’s Alibi Brewing. Opportunities to get active on Waiheke include the exciting zipline — soaring above vineyards and native forest — at EcoZip Adventures and guided walks run by Terra & Tide that take in the island’s galleries and art scene. Fine wine and food connoisseurs should book ahead for a guided gourmet food and wine tour with family-owned Ananda Tours.

아직 지치기엔 이르다. 오클랜드에서 꼭 경험해야 할 일 중 하나는 스쿠터를 타고 해안선을 따라 구불구불하게 이어진 타마키 드라이브를 달리는 것! 국제운전면허증만 있으면 우버를 통해 E-스쿠터를 쉽게 빌릴 수 있다. 머리를 부드럽게 헤집는 온순한 바람을 가르며 스쿠터 라이딩을 즐기다 보면 한나절이 금세 지나간다.
바다 위에서 시간을 보내고 싶은 이들은 시 카약에 오른다. 타마키 드라이브 동쪽 끝에 면한 세인트헬리어스 해변에 가면 항만을 건너 랑기토토섬까지 닿는 카약 투어 프로그램을 운영하는 오클랜드 시 카약을 만날 수 있다.
랑기토토섬에 도착해 바비큐 파티로 배를 채우고 다시 세인트헬리어스 해변으로 돌아오는 데 걸리는 여정은 총 6시간. 분홍빛으로 물든 초저녁 하늘 아래, 파도가 은근슬쩍 밀어주는 배 위에서 천천히 노를 저으며 바라보는 도시의 빛은 잊을 수 없는 경험이 될 것이다.
A Two-Wheeled Discovery of Tamaki- Drive
Back on the mainland, hire an e-scooter on the Uber app, and spend a morning or afternoon traveling the 10km of Tamaki- Drive, which extends from downtown to several serpentine bays. Highlights include views of Rangitoto; the penguins, sharks and walk-through aquarium at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s; and Mission Bay’s cafés and art deco fountain. For an exciting water adventure, join a guided kayaking tour with Auckland Sea Kayaks, with the destination being Rangitoto. Excursions leave from Saint Heliers beach at the eastern end of Tamaki- Drive and take around six hours. After a barbecue dinner on Rangitoto, you’ll be paddling back to Saint Heliers while the sun sets and will be treated to views of the city lights twinkling on.

수영 후 허기는 머레이 카페가 든든하게 채워준다. ‘서퍼의 오두막’을 콘셉트로 한 이국적인 인테리어로, 훌륭한 커피와 멕시칸 요리를 맛볼 수 있어 로컬들에게 더 사랑받는 곳이다. 배를 실컷 불렸다면, 드넓게 펼쳐진 검은 모래 해변을 따라 느긋하게 산책을 즐겨보자.

West Coast Surfing and Clifftop Walking at Piha
One of the most spectacular of Auckland’s rugged West Coast beaches, Piha is very popular for walking, swimming and surfing. The waves can be strong, so always swim between the flags, where surf lifeguards are on duty. Near the soaring profile of Lion Rock, the wind- and sea-eroded remains of an ancient volcano, is a surf shack-style café named Murray. It serves excellent coffee and Mexican-inspired snacks.
Throughout the nearby Waitākere Ranges Regional Park are forested walking trails with brilliant views of the coastline and of the waves rolling in across the Tasman Sea from Australia. Offering excellent views of Piha’s iconic Lion Rock, the Mercer Bay Loop Walk is an undulating track that takes around 45 minutes to complete. After visiting Piha, stop in the hilltop village of Titirangi and head to Street Feast. This vibrant food hall serves dishes from all around the world. There’s also excellent art and design — much of it crafted by local West Coast artists — at Titirangi’s Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery. Recently, new landmarks have emerged in the Zhongshan area, along the Taipei Metro (MRT) red line, providing even more reasons to travel to Taipei. Let’s explore Zhongshan, an area in which the past and present meet, where one can find well-maintained buildings and experience a mix of cultures.

타이베이는 타이완 여행자들이 가장 많이 찾는 도시였다. 특히 중산구의 중심인 중산역 주변은 관광객들로 늘 붐비던 곳이지만, 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 발걸음이 끊기면서 로컬을 중심으로 한 새로운 라이프스타일이 형성됐다. 중산역 주변은 지난 30년 동안 가장 급격한 변화를 겪은 지역이기도 하다. ‘대만일치시기’에는 일본인들을 위한 고급 호텔이 즐비한 거리였으며 중산에 지하철이 들어서기 전에는 타이완에 주재하는 해외 기업인이나 공무원들이 주로 거주했다. 이는 중산 지역이 이국적인 분위기를 갖게 된 이유다. 정통 일식 레스토랑과 바가 늘어선 티아오통 상업지구를 거쳐 맞은편 길로 들어서면 정원이 펼쳐진 유럽풍 건물이 나타난다. 미국 대사관저로 쓰였던 곳으로, 현재는 타이완 영화문화협회가 운영하는 예술문화공간으로 쓰이고 있다. 골목 모퉁이를 돌아 중산역 메인 거리에 들어서면 수많은 빈티지 의류 매장과 소품 숍들이 자리한다. 골목 안쪽에는 여러 독립 서점이 있고 몇 걸음 더 가면 타이베이 현대미술관(Moca)에 다다르게 된다. 다채로운 분위기와 문화, 예술이 한데 섞인 멜팅포트 같은 지역인 것이다.
Taipei is the most popular destination for travelers to Taiwan, and the area around Zhongshan Station has been adored by tourists. But when the tourists disappeared with the onset of the pandemic, locals took over and breathed new life into Zhongshan. Over the past 30 years, this part of Taipei has experienced the most dramatic change. During the Japanese colonial era, it was a colorful neighborhood with luxury hotels that mainly catered to the Japanese. Then, before the subway was built, the area was home to overseas businessmen and public officials residing in Taiwan. Today, the Zhongshan area still retains a multicultural atmosphere. If you pass through the Tiaotong Commercial District, which is lined with authentic Japanese restaurants and a variety of bars, you’ll encounter a European-style building with a garden.
7년 넘게 중산 지역에서 이자카야를 운영해온 저우위제는 “중산 지역을 걸을 때마다 완전히 다른 세계로 들어가는 듯한 느낌이 들어요. 역사가 쌓이고 다양한 이야기가 한데 축적되면서 새로운 중산만의 분위기가 형성된 것이죠”라고 말한다. 한편 로컬을 중심으로 한 라이프스타일이 자리를 잡으면서 중산구 위쪽에 있는 위안산, 젠탄, 스린 지역도 변화하기 시작했다. 타이베이 시립미술관이 위치해 ‘문화와 예술의 성지’로 불리는 위안산 지역은 엑스포돔을 중심으로 복합문화공간, 공유 오피스 등이 들어섰다. 이 지역은 건축 공법이 정교한 호텔과 예스러움이 물씬 풍기는 고택이 자리하고 있어 정반대의 분위기를 느낄 수 있다. 한 정거장 거리에 위치한 젠탄역과 스린역 사이에는 최근 타이베이 퍼포밍 아트 센터가 완공돼 타이베이의 새로운 예술 중심지가 되었다. 스린역에는 타이완 최대 규모의 야시장이자 현지인들이 저녁을 먹기 위해 찾는 스린 야시장이 위치한다. 이곳을 둘러보며 타이완이 지닌 독특한 로컬 문화를 경험해보자.
Once the official residence of the U.S. ambassador, it’s now an arts and culture space. Near Zhongshan Station, you’ll find a cluster of vintage clothing stores, several independent bookstores and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Yujie Chou, who has been running a bar in the Zhongshan area for more than seven years, says, “Every time I walk into this area, I feel like I’m entering a completely different world. The rich and diverse history of the area means that Zhongshan has developed an atmosphere that is totally unique.” However, as people here have shifted toward a more locally centered lifestyle, the Yuanshan, Jiantan and Shilin areas, located north of Zhongshan, have also begun to change. The Yuanshan area, called the “center of art and culture,” is home to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and features sophisticated hotels and old houses. Just one station north is the new Taipei Performing Arts Center, followed by Shilin Station, home to the Shilin Night Market. One of the nation’s largest night markets, it is a great place to experience local Taiwanese culture.
타이베이 퍼포밍 아트 센터
MRT 젠탄역 옆에 위치한 타이베이 퍼포밍 아트 센터는 프리츠커건축상을 수상한 네덜란드 건축가 렘 콜하스가 설계했다. 총 3000석이 넘는 규모의 극장 3개로 구성되며, 그중 거대한 은색 구 형태의 외관이 눈길을 사로잡는 대극장은 객석과 무대를 구분하는 프로시니엄 아치 형태로 지어졌다. 또한 이 아트 센터는 <타임>지가 뽑은 2021년 세계 100대 명소 중 하나로 선정되기도 했다.
Taipei Performing Arts Center
Taipei Performing Arts Center, located next to Jiantan MRT Station, was designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The center contains three theaters, with a combined capacity of over 3,000. One of the theaters, located inside an enormous silver sphere protruding from the building, sports a proscenium arch that separates the audience from the stage. The center was selected by Time Magazine as one of the world’s top 100 attractions of 2021.
마지 스퀘어
위안산 지역 엑스포 공원 내 위치한 문화공간으로, 타이베이 현지인들이 휴일에 많이 찾는다. 컨테이너 박스, 나무로 된 곡식 창고를 이용해 만든 공간에 미식, 소품, 음악, 예술 등의 요소를 교묘히 결합해 이국적인 분위기를 자아낸다. 내부는 파머스 마켓, 푸드 코트, 레스토랑, 각종 소품점, 다목적 공연장 등 6개 구역으로 구성되어 있다. 원형 무대에서는 각종 콘서트가 열리며, 엑스포돔에서도 비정기적으로 대형 전시회가 열린다.
MAJI Square
MAJI Square is a cultural space located in Taipei Expo Park, in the Yuanshan area. The square, constructed from shipping containers and repurposed wood, offers up gourmet food, specialty items, music and art. The interior of MAJI Square is divided into a farmers’ market, a food court, exotic restaurants, various small shops and multipurpose performance halls. Various concerts are held on MAJI Square’s circular stage, and large-scale exhibitions are held intermittently at the nearby Expo Dome.
린안타이 고택
18세기 청 왕조시대에 타이완으로 이주한 린씨 일가가 실제 거주하던 곳으로, 타이베이에서 가장 완벽하게 보존된 중국의 전통가옥이다. 중국 남부 지역 양식의 건물로, 겨울에는 따뜻하고 여름에는 시원하도록 햇볕과 바람이 잘 통하는 구조로 설계되었다. 고택의 내부는 수많은 방이 연결되어 있으며 중간중간 크고 작은 연못과 숲이 어우러져 도심 속 여유를 선사한다. ‘달이 비치는 큰 연못’이라는 뜻을 지닌 ‘영월대지’가 있는 후원은 꼭 둘러봐야 할 스폿이다.
Lin An Tai Historical House and Museum
Lin An Tai Historical House and Museum is the historical residence of the Lin family, who moved to Taiwan in the 18th century, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). The interior of the old house is made up of numerous rooms that connect to one another. On the grounds, there are large and small ponds as well as small areas of forest, with a peaceful central space. Yao Yue Pavilion, which means “a large pond reflecting the moon,” is a must-see spot in the garden behind the house.
다퉁대학 샤오바이궁
다퉁대학 내 교육 센터로 활용되고 있는 샤오바이궁은 강의실을 비롯해 공연을 열 수 있는 콘서트홀까지 갖추고 있다. 외부인도 내부 입장이 가능해 사진을 찍으려는 사람들로 인산인해를 이룬다. 타이베이에서 잘 알려지지 않은 비밀 명소로 타이완의 많은 예비부부가 선호하는 웨딩 촬영 장소이기도 하다.
Tatung University San-Chih Hall
San-Chih Hall is one of the educational facilities at Tatung University. It has both a lecture hall and a concert hall that is large enough to hold small performances. You don’t have to be a student to visit the university. You may notice while visiting that it’s a popular photoshoot location for Taiwanese newlyweds.

힙스터들의 아지트로 불리는 중산 지역 츠펑 거리에 위치한 3층 규모의 서점. 매장 내 진녹색 테이블과 앤티크한 나무 의자가 고풍스러운 분위기를 자아내며, 서가는 문학, 미술, 사진 관련 서적 위주로 큐레이션되어 있다. 커피도 판매하는데, 레너드 코헨, 시몬 드 보부아르 등 작가 이름을 붙인 메뉴에서 서점으로서의 아이덴티티를 확인할 수 있다.
Athena Books
Bookstore and hipster hideout Athena Books is tucked away on Chifeng Street, in the Zhongshan area. The store’s curated book collection features volumes on literature, art and photography. The coffee sold there is named after famous international writers, which adds to the bookstore’s distinct identity.
스린 야시장
스린 야시장은 1913년에 문을 열어 109년의 역사를 지닌 곳으로, 타이완에서 손꼽히는 대형 야시장 중 하나다. 교통이 편리할 뿐만 아니라 각양각색의 기발하고 재미있는 상품들, 특색 있는 타이완의 먹거리들로 가득 차 둘러볼 가치가 충분하다. 특히 ‘미쉐린 빕 구르망’에 선정된 돼지갈비찜과 타이완식 냉면인 량, 파파야를 넣어 만든 우유는 꼭 먹어봐야 할 음식이다.
Shilin Night Market
First opened in 1913, Shilin Night Market is one of the largest night markets in Taiwan. The market is easy to get to and well worth a look-see. Among the wide variety of interesting products and unique Taiwanese foods, one dish to look out for is the steamed pork ribs, a recipient of the Michelin Bib Gourmand. The Taiwanese-style cold noodle dish liangmenand the papaya milk are also must-try foods served up in the market.
위안산 호텔
산 중턱에 위치해 있어 타이베이 시내를 여행하며 계속 마주하게 되는 위안산 호텔은 타이베이의 랜드마크 중 하나다. 국립중정기념당을 지은 건축가 양줘청이 설계했다. 오리엔탈 양식의 디자인과 선명한 레드 컬러 외관을 지닌 이곳은 과거 나라의 국빈을 모시던 곳이었다. 현재는 14층 규모 총 500개의 객실로 이루어진 호텔로 운영되고 있으며, 객실에서 타이베이 101을 중심으로 한 시내 야경을 감상할 수 있다.
The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel is located partway up a mountain overlooking downtown Taipei. One of Taipei’s most famous landmarks, the hotel was designed by Cho-cheng Yang, the architect who built the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The building was formerly used to host official state guests. Currently, it operates as a hotel with a total of 500 rooms on 14 floors. Guests can observe the city’s wonderful nightscape, with a clear view of the Taipei 101 building.
타이베이 시립미술관
타이베이 시립미술관은 엑스포 공원 미술원구 내에 위치하고 있다. 1983년 개관했으며 타이완의 유명 건축가 가오얼판이 지었다. 현대미술 위주로 큐레이션된 타이완 및 전 세계 예술가들의 작품 5000여 점이 전시되어 있으며, 비정기적으로 각종 문화예술 전시 및 공연 등이 열린다. 미처 몰랐던 타이베이의 예술을 감상할 수 있는 좋은 기회다.
Taipei Fine Arts Museum
Opened in 1983 and designed by famous Taiwanese architect Er-pan Kao, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is in Taipei Expo Park. With a focus on contemporary art, the museum displays around 5,000 carefully selected pieces made by both Taiwanese and international artists. A pensive stroll through the museum makes for an excellent introduction to Taipei’s impressive art scene.

Running through the movie is the story of Peter Parker’s spectacular growth as he struggles in the absence of Iron Man, who served as his spiritual pillar.
This latest Spider-Man offering starring Tom Holland — who inherited the role of Spider-Man from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — drew attention even before its release. Marvel fans were looking forward to this installment with the expectation that they would be able to see the multiverse, the core of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The results of that expectation are reflected in the figures. Immediately after its release, it received 97% on the Rotten Tomato Index, drawing favorable reviews from critics and audiences, and recorded the highest global box office revenue of any Spider-Man movie, $1.8 billion (as of February 2022).

Agent 355 was a code name given to a female U.S. spy in George Washington’s intelligence organization during the 18th century American Revolutionary War. Actor Jessica Chastain, inspired by the story of Agent 355, worked as a producer and starred in the film, which is about a group of top female agents fighting against a global criminal organization. The narrative, which is all about female camaraderie, is somewhat predictable, but the combination of top actresses, including Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o and Fan Bingbing; the bold action scenes; and the colorful locations make this film a delight to watch.

첫사랑에게 연인으로 존중받지 못하는 여자 자영(전종서)과 짝사랑하는 회사 선배에게 ‘잠자리 상대’로 이용당하는 남자 우리(손석구)가 어느 날 각자의 목적을 갖고 시작해본 데이팅 앱 ‘오작교미’를 통해 만난다. 실연의 상처를 숨기기 위해 쿨한 척 ‘몸 친구’를 자처하는 두 남녀의 연애담은 딱히 새로울 것 없는 스토리지만 ‘사랑의 상처’라는 청춘의 통과의례를 날카롭고 능글맞게 풀어내는 두 배우의 명품 연기는 평단의 호평을 받았다.
Ja-young (Jong-seo Jeon), a woman who was treated callously by her first lover, whom she adored, and Woo-ri (Suk-ku Son), a man who is being treated the same way by his workplace crush, meet one day through a dating app. Ja-young and Woo-ri both hide their heartbreak, trying to portray themselves as strong and aloof. Their romantic relationship, which develops despite their assertions that they’re not looking for anything serious, doesn’t break new ground cinematically. However, the quality of the acting in this movie about healing emotional scars makes it worth watching.

The song 26 was produced in the middle of the pandemic and carries a hopeful message. Lauv, who calls himself a storyteller, offers comfort to his listeners through his honest lyrics, which tell personal stories. One example is a line in 26 that goes “He made a couple songs and they got big. …but it all left him with a hole in his heart.” The lyrics clearly contain details about Lauv’s personal experiences. Lauv says about the song, “I wrote about the moment when I tried to find my own light that I was losing as I got older.” Lauv, who continues to suffer from depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), makes an effort to spread positive messages outside of music. He established the Blue Boy Foundation to improve public awareness of mental illness and raise money for the cause, and he also created the global platform My Blue Thoughts, where people can share their stories anonymously.

The platinum-certified Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter John K released his new song A Lot in January. This was his first release since his debut album in case you miss me, which came out last year. A Lot features soft melodies and tugs at one’s heartstrings through its gentle lyrics about missing a past love. The tune is catchy, with clean guitar riffs in the background that make you nod your head. A Lot, produced by WYNNE, is John K’s second collaboration with Steph Jones, who wrote and composed the 2019 hit If We Never Met. A Lot is the first of many songs that John K plans to release this year.

The album contains a total of 13 songs, including the lead single INVU, which talks about the feeling you get when you look at someone you love who is very different from you and who can’t help hurting you. Also featured are Can’t Control Myself, which Taeyeon herself partially wrote; and Weekend, which was very popular during its initial digital release in July of last year.

에픽하이가 지난해 선보인 정규 10집 PART 1에 이어 두 번째 앨범 <Epik High Is Here 下>로 돌아왔다. 에픽하이 스스로 ‘명반’이라고 자부할 만큼 데뷔 20년 차를 맞은 에픽하이 음악의 정수를 느낄 수 있는 앨범이다. ‘우산’, ‘또 싸워’에 이어 타이틀곡 ‘그래서 그래’에서 다시 호흡을 맞춘 윤하를 비롯해 이하이, 김필, 원슈타인, pH-1 등 총 9명의 아티스트가 피처링에 참여해 듣는 재미를 더한다. 에픽하이는 지난 2월 이 앨범을 발매한 후 3월부터 두 달에 걸쳐 시애틀, 로스앤젤레스 등지에서 북미 투어를 진행했다.
Epik High released part 1 of their 10th full-length album last year and have now returned with Epik High Is Here (Part 2). Epik High themselves have called the album a masterpiece. Released 20 years after their debut, the album captures the essence of their music. Younha’s voice is featured on the track Gray So Gray, and the album also includes collaborations with Lee Hi, Kim Feel, Wonstein and pH-1. After releasing this album, Epik High embarked on a two-month North American tour that wrapped up in mid-April. This was immediately followed by a special two-weekend appearance at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California.

An original story born in collaboration between BTS and entertainment company HYBE, 7FATES: CHAKHO is an urban fantasy reinterpretation of the chakhogapsa, a legendary group of tiger hunters from the Joseon Dynasty. SUGA’s delicate sounds combine with Jung Kook’s mournful vocals to evoke a dreamy, magnificent feeling. The U.S. series Prodigal Son is a criminal investigation drama that focuses on a profiler son who must cooperate with his serial killer father. Son Malcolm is played by Tom Payne, who became famous as a recurring character named Jesus in the U.S. drama The Walking Dead. Opposite Payne is Micheal Sheen, who starred in the Twilight and Underworld movies. Sheen, whose work has won him a BAFTA and an Emmy nomination, plays Payne’s father, Dr. Martin Whitler. The title Prodigal Son refers to the timeless story of the same name in the Book of Genesis, about a recalcitrant son who returns and is forgiven by his father. Season 1 of the show focuses on Malcolm’s desire not to follow in the footsteps of his father, a doctor-cum-serial killer, while Season 2 centers around his efforts to protect his little sister, who has become a killer herself. The more time Malcolm spends with his father, the more of his forgotten childhood is illuminated. The inclusion of Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as one of the leads makes the series even more interesting. Zeta-Jones plays Vivian Capshaw, a resident doctor at the psychiatric laboratory where Martin Whitler is hospitalized as a patient.
