During the day, visitors can bask in the summer vibes of Busan, a stage for those who want to play in the shallow ocean. 도심 속 해변 바캉스, 파리 플라주

매년 여름 파리에선 해변으로 변한 센강에서 여유롭게 바캉스 중인 파리지앵을 발견할 수 있다. 파리 플라주는 센 강변의 차도를 통제해 보행자도로를 만든 후 약 5000톤의 모래로 덮어 완성한 인공해변으로, ‘플라주(plages)’는 프랑스어로 ‘해변’을 의미한다. 이 기간에는 센강 주변에 조성된 야외 수영장을 비롯해 수백 개의 파라솔과 비치 베드가 설치되며 전시회, 보드게임 등 다양한 문화 이벤트가 열려 파리 도심에서 이색적인 휴가를 즐길 수 있다. 올해는 7월 9일부터 8월 21일까지 운영될 예정이다.

Paris Plages, a Beach Vacation in the City

Every summer in Paris, you can find Parisians relaxing along the edge of the Seine River, which is transformed for a number of sunny weeks into a beach. Paris Plages (plages is French for “beaches”) are artificial beaches created by blocking off sections along the Seine and covering them with about 5,000 tons of sand. While the Paris Plages are open, hundreds of parasols and beach lounge chairs are set up along the river and beside outdoor swimming pools. At the same time, diversions like board games and various cultural events are on offer, including art exhibitions. Due to popular demand, Paris Plages has been growing in size every year since it was first held in 2002. This year, it will run from July 9 to August 21, and sporting events will be held alongside the Plages in celebration of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

밤하늘에 핀 붉은 꽃, 메이시 불꽃 축제

매년 7월 4일 열리는 메이시의 불꽃 축제는 미국 독립기념일을 기념하는 불꽃놀이 쇼다. 메이시 백화점이 위치한 맨해튼 34번가를 중심으로 이스트 리버에 정박 중인 5척의 배에서 4만 8000발 이상의 폭죽이 발사된다. 오후 8시부터 10시까지 NBC에서 중계방송을 진행하며 불꽃놀이는 9시 25분부터 시작된다. 밤하늘을 수놓는 화려한 불꽃을 감상해보자.

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks

Macy’s fireworks display is held each year in New York City on July 4, Independence Day in the U.S. This year, more than 48,000 fireworks will be fired from five barges on the East River near 34^th Street in Manhattan, where Macy’s Department Store is located. The event will be broadcast live on NBC, with the display beginning at 9:25 p.m. Visit New York to witness a tapestry of colorful fireworks lighting up the sky.

도쿄의 뉴 레트로 스페이스, 아라카와 유원지

도쿄 시민의 ‘어린 시절 추억’을 간직한 놀이공원, 아라카와 유원지가 30년 만에 새 단장을 마쳤다. 무려 1922년에 처음 개장한 이곳은 화려한 스펙을 자랑하는 어트랙션 대신 1980년대 영화에서 갓 튀어나온 듯한 대관람차와 한가로운 산책로, 광장, 수영장 등을 갖췄다. 무라카미 하루키의 <상실의 시대>에 등장하는 도덴(옛 노면 전차)을 찻집으로 개조한 ‘카페 193’은 리뉴얼 후 처음 선보이는 공간이다. 옛 도쿄의 낭만적인 정취를 호젓하게 즐기고 싶다면 찾아보자. 홈페이지(www.city.arakawa.tokyo.jp/yuuen)에서 사전 예약 후 방문해야 한다.

Tokyo’s New Retro Space, Arakawa Amusement Park

Arakawa Amusement Park, an amusement park in Tokyo that’s sure to bring back memories of childhood, has reopened after undergoing its first major renovation in 30 years. The amusement park, which first opened in 1922, is equipped with a Ferris wheel, a promenade, a plaza and a swimming pool, all of which seem to have popped out of a 1980s movie. The first space to have been introduced since the renewal is a distinctive vintage Tokyo tram car similar to the one that appears in Haruki Murakami’s immensely popular novel Norwegian Wood. The tram car now serves as a coffee shop called Café 193. Visitors to the park need to make an advance reservation via the website (www.city.arakawa.tokyo.jp/yuuen).

유리의 고아한 아름다움을 조각으로 표현하는 예술가, 장미셸 오토니엘이 서울에 환상적인 정원을 꾸민다. 꽃과 꽃에 얽힌 이야기로 관객을 마법, 환희, 경이, 매혹과 같은 정서적 경험의 세계로 이끄는 그의 개인전이 서울시립미술관과 덕수궁 정원에서 열린다. 덕수궁 연못, 미술관 정원을 지나 전시실까지 이어지는 꽃, 유리 벽돌, 매듭 등의 설치 조각을 따라 산책하다 보면 위로와 치유의 여정을 만날 수 있다. 8월 7일까지.

Jean-Michel Othoniel’s Treasure Gardens

Jean-Michel Othoniel, an artist who expresses the elegant beauty of glass through his sculptures, will decorate two fantastic gardens in Seoul. His solo exhibition — which incorporates flowers to invoke a world of emotional experiences such as magic, joy, wonder and fascination — is being held at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) and Deoksugung Palace Garden. You can experience a journey of comfort and healing by taking a walk along the installations made up of sculpted flowers, bricks and knots that decorate the spaces stretching from Deoksugung Palace’s pond and SeMA’s garden through to its exhibition space. Until August 7.

EDM 축제의 향연, 투모로랜드 2022

세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 일렉트로닉 뮤직 페스티벌, 투모로랜드가 3년 만에 열린다. 벨기에의 도시 붐에서 펼쳐지는 이 행사는 매년 40만 명 이상의 사람들이 찾을 정도로 큰 규모를 자랑한다. 보통 2주에 걸쳐 열리지만 올해는 특별히 7월 15~17일, 22~24일, 29~31일 총 3주간 열린다. 세계 DJ 인기 순위 1위인 드미트리 베가스 & 라이크 마이크 형제를 비롯해 마르틴 하릭스 등 다양한 라인업의 무대가 준비 중이다.

Tomorrowland 2022 EDM Festival

Tomorrowland, the world’s largest electronic music festival, will be held in 2022 for the first time in three years. The annual event, which is held in the Belgian city of Boom, was attended by more than 400,000 people before Covid. It usually takes place over two weeks but this year will be held over three weeks, with shows scheduled from July 15 to 17, 22 to 24 and 29 to 31. The lineup includes some of the world’s top DJs.

태즈메이니아 위스키 위크 2022

위스키는 물에 따라 맛이 달라진다. 깨끗한 자연으로 유명한 호주 태즈메이니아에는 70개가 넘는 양조장이 있는데, 산에서 솟아나는 샘물, 이 지역에서 기른 보리를 이용해 태즈메이니아만의 특별한 위스키를 만든다. 이를 맛볼 수 있는 태즈메이니아 위스키 위크가 8월 8일부터 14일까지 열린다. 태즈메이니아 위스키로 처음 인정받은 라크 위스키부터 각 증류소를 대표하는 위스키 메이커까지 한자리에서 만나볼 수 있다. 자세한 정보는 홈페이지(www.taswhiskyweek.com)를 통해 확인할 것.

Tasmania’s Whisky Week 2022

The taste of whisky changes depending on the water used. Tasmania, famous for its pristine nature, has around 70 distilleries. The state’s mountain spring water and barley make its whisky special, and visitors can sample some during Tasmanian Whisky Week, which will be held this year from August 8 to 14. The festival will be attended by whisky makers from each distillery in the region, including Lark Whisky, which was Tasmania’s first whisky to receive international recognition. 킹피셔 습지 & 센토피아

시민과 여행자의 휴식처 역할을 해온 싱가포르의 대표적 랜드마크 가든스 바이 더 베이가 지난해 말 킹피셔 습지를 개장하며 더욱 매력적인 공간이 되었다. 새롭게 조성한 폭포와 개울 주변으로 뛰어난 탄소 저장 능력을 가진 토종 맹그로브 나무, 맹그로브과 식물이 하나의 숲을 형성해 도심 한가운데서 마음껏 녹지를 즐길 수 있다. 와일드 라이프 룩업 전망대에서는 새와 파충류를 비롯한 수많은 야생동물을 발견할 수 있으며, 이러한 동물에 관해 설명된 안내판이 있어 아이와 함께하는 여행지로도 추천할 만하다. 이곳의 이름인 ‘킹피셔’는 물총새를 뜻하는데, 콜라드물총새, 흰목물총새 등 여러 종의 물총새를 발견하는 재미도 놓치지 말자. 한편 센토사섬의 초록 가득한 열대우림과 실로소비치 사이에 지난 3월 오픈한 센토피아는 싱가포르 현지의 꽃과 향수 문화를 체험할 수 있는 장소다. AR 기술을 활용해 300개 이상의 향을 선보이는 전시부터 6000개가 넘는 시향 샘플을 보유한 퍼퓸 바에서 진행하는 향수 DIY 세션까지 다채로운 프로그램을 제공한다.

Singapore’s Newest Landmarks:
Kingfisher Wetlands and Scentopia

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore’s leading attraction, has been enhanced with the addition of the Kingfisher Wetlands, which opened late last year. The newly created waterfall and stream are surrounded by native mangrove trees, which have excellent carbon storage capabilities and add extra greenery to this city oasis. At the Wildlife Lookout observation platform you can observe a range of wild animals, making this a wonderful destination for families with young children. In addition, Scentopia, which opened in March between Sentosa Island’s lush green rainforest and the scenic Siloso Beach, is a place where you can learn about Singapore’s local flowers and perfume culture. Scentopia offers 300 augmented reality (AR) exhibits. There is also a perfume bar with 6,000 scent samples that visitors can choose from to make their own perfume.

밀라노는 패션과 쇼핑의 도시로 알려져 있지만, 알프스와 맞닿은 이탈리아 북부 롬바르디아 지역에 위치해 자연을 함께 만끽할 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 밀라노 근교에도 각양각색의 알프스를 선사하는 장소들이 자리한다.

While Milan is best known for fashion, its proximity to the Alps also makes it a good location for countryside excursions. Here are three places near the city where visitors can appreciate the Alpine region.

코모 호수 Lake Como

알프스와 호수의 경치를 동시에 감상할 수 있는 코모 호수는 조지 클루니, 마돈나 등의 셀러브리티와 영국 왕가가 사랑하는 품격 있는 휴양지다. 호수 주변에는 영화 <스타워즈 에피소드 2-클론의 습격>, <007 카지노 로얄>의 촬영지였던 빌라 델 발비아넬로를 비롯해 우아한 저택들이 있다. 호수를 더 가까이 즐기고 싶다면 리바 모터보트나 수상비행기를 이용하자. 호수에서 잡은 생선으로 만든 요리를 맛보거나 역사적인 호텔에서 묵는 것도 이곳을 여행하는 현명한 방법이다.

Boasting lakeside scenery and beautiful mountain views, Lake Como is a sumptuous resort area frequented by world-famous celebrities like George Clooney and Madonna, and members of the royal family of Great Britain. The lake is lined with elegant mansions such as the Villa del Balbianello, which was a filming location for movies including Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Casino Royale (2006). For a closer look at the lake, hop on a Riva motorboat or a seaplane before spending the night in a historic hotel.

발텔리나 Valtellina

알프스산맥으로 둘러싸인 발텔리나는 2000년 역사를 자랑하는 와인 산지다. 와인을 생산하는 포도밭에서는 유네스코가 무형유산으로 지정한 건축 기술인 메쌓기 방식으로 완성한 돌담도 확인할 수 있다. 발텔리나 여행을 마친 후에는 베르니나 익스프레스에 탑승하자. 발텔리나의 티라노에서 출발해 해발 2253m의 오스피치오 베르니나역을 거쳐 스위스 쿠어에 닿는 노선의 기차로, 파노라마로 펼쳐지는 장엄한 알프스의 자태를 바라보며 국경을 넘는 여행을 할 수 있다.

Cradled in the Alps, Valtellina has a 2,000-year history of wine production. Visitors to the vineyards can admire dry stone walls built using a technique featured on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. After touring the area, hop on the Bernina Express, a train departing from the town of Tirano. Passengers can admire a panoramic view of the Alps as they cross the Swiss border on the way to Chur.

보르미오 Bormio

보르미오는 스텔비오 고개와 동부 알프스에서 가장 높은 산인 오르틀레스 봉우리 아래에 자리해 겨울 스포츠를 즐길 수 있는 여행지로, 2026년 밀라노 코르티나 동계올림픽의 스키 경기 개최지이기도 하다. 여름에 이곳을 방문한다면 웰니스 여행을 즐겨보자. 고대 로마시대부터 역사가 이어져온 바니 누오비와 바니 베키 등의 온천 시설에서 광활한 들판과 목초지, 아다강과 프로돌포 개울이 가로지르는 풍경을 바라보며 힐링할 수 있다.

Bormio is located beneath the Stelvio Pass and Ortler, the tallest peak in the eastern Alps. This winter sports destination will host skiing events in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games. In the summer, visitors can enjoy a wellness-oriented trip. Take a healing plunge in the thermal baths at Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi, a tradition which dates back to Roman times. Gaze over the meadows in the valley formed by the Adda River.

Returning to tried-and-true destinations is emerging as a post-pandemic travel trend. Here are three of our favorite destinations that conjure up the past.

우리는 현대의 안락함에 익숙해진 채 살아가고 있지만, 멀리 떠난 여행에선 역사의 흔적을 좇곤 한다. 19세기 프랑스의 농부처럼 살고 싶지 않더라도 파리의 1800년대 시절을 간직한 오스만 대로는 설레는 마음으로 방문하는 것처럼 말이다. 1784년 라마 1세를 위해 건설된 방콕의 왓 프라깨우 역시 에메랄드 불상으로 위세를 떨치며 오늘날 연간 800만 명의 방문객을 맞이하는 관광 명소가 되었다. 이렇듯 역사를 간직한 옛 장소들이 새로운 추억이 덧입혀지는 여행지로 재탄생하고 있다.

When it comes to attracting tourism, history is big business. The nostalgic atmosphere of Paris’ elegant boulevards built in the 1800s draws millions of tourists, as does Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which King Rama I built in 1784. But when visiting these and other iconic sites from bygone eras, don’t just snap a selfie and dash off to the next spot on the list. Stick around and explore a bit and you’ll find yourself with a newfound appreciation for the past.

호주, 소버린 힐 Sovereign Hill, Australia

1851년 2월 12일, 한 광부가 호주 소버린 힐의 물웅덩이에서 금 조각을 발견한 이후 골드러시가 시작되었다. 1970년, 이곳은 당시의 모습을 그대로 간직한 소버린 힐 역사박물관으로 재탄생했다. 빅토리아풍 건물들이 밀집한 메인 거리에선 매년 7월, 눈부신 불빛과 크리스마스 장신구들로 화려하게 꾸민 윈터 라이츠 페스티벌이 열린다.

On February 12, 1851, a prospector discovered flecks of gold in a waterhole near present-day Sovereign Hill, Australia. Created for posterity by the community of nearby Ballarat, Sovereign Hill brings Australia’s gold rush to life. Visit at Christmas time for Winter Wonderlights, when Main Street’s Victorian-style buildings are brought to life with light projections.

미국, 코니아일랜드 Coney Island, USA

브라이턴 해변과 맨해튼 해변이 경계를 이루는 브루클린 자치구 안에 위치한 코니아일랜드는 1870년대부터 휴양지로 발전하였다. 1927년에 만들어진 롤러코스터 ‘코니아일랜드 사이클론’을 포함한 여러 놀이 기구가 있는 ‘루나파크’ 그리고 산책로가 어우러진 황금빛 모래 해변은 미국인들에게 여름 하면 떠오르는 상징적인 장소가 되었다.

New York City’s Coney Island has been a place of amusement since the 1870s. Its golden-sand beaches and boardwalks give it some seaside charm, and Luna Park provides more than enough excitement to go around. NYC’s largest amusement park, Luna Park boasts such rides as the Coney Island Cyclone, a wooden roller coaster dating back to 1927.

Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK

The British market town Stratford-Upon-Avon is closely connected with Willam Shakespeare. Visit the childhood home of Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway, where the kitchen is full of food commonly eaten by townspeople in 16^th century England. Then take afternoon tea at Billesley Manor, the 16th century mansion where the bard wrote As You Like It.

도심 속의 고요, 궁: Escape the City and Savor Silence at a Korean Palace

창덕궁, 창경궁, 덕수궁, 경희궁 그리고 경복궁. 5대 궁궐이 모여 있는 사대문 안은 서울의 중심부로, 도시에서 가장 분망하고 역동적인 지역이다. 촘촘하고 숨 가쁜 빌딩 숲 사이를 지나 궁궐에 들어서면, 방금 우려낸 따뜻한 차로 목을 축인 듯 차분하고 고요한 순간을 만난다. 궁이 품은 비밀스러운 정원, 창덕궁 후원을 천천히 거닐거나 연못 위에 비친 경회루를 응시할 때면 시공을 넘나드는 신비로운 경험을 할 수 있다. 518년간 이어진 조선 왕조의 정치, 경제적 심장이었던 궁궐은 이제 서울에 깊은 숨을 불어넣고 있다.

Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Gyeonghuigung and Gyeongbokgung are the five major palaces in the center of Seoul. As soon as you enter one of these locations, you’ll feel peace and tranquility wash over you, as if you’ve just had a sip of warm, freshly brewed tea. As you gaze upon the reflection of Gyeonghoeru Pavilion on the pond or stroll through the Secret Garden at the back of Changdeokgung, you’ll feel a sense of mystery. The palaces, which were the political and economic heart of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), now serve as symbols of Seoul.

Photographer Koo Bohnchang has traveled the world documenting Joseon Dynasty white porcelain ceramics and moon jars for his series Vessels for the Heart. Many examples of such ceramics can be found in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Korea.

겸손의 지혜, 백자 달항아리: Wisdom in Humility, the Moon Jar

미술사학자 최순우가 달항아리에 부치는 연가. “흰빛의 세계와 형언하기 힘든 부정형의 원이 그려주는 무심한 아름다움. (중략) 이 어리숙하면서 순진한 아름다움에 정이 간다.” 한국미의 본바탕, 극치로 종종 표현되는 이 오브제는 지금도 많은 이들에게 영감을 준다. 소설가 알랭 드 보통은 “겸손이라는 미덕에 최상의 경의를 표하는 작품”이라는 말로 달항아리에 깃든 정신을 읽는다. 순백의 온기, 공기와 맞닿은 가는 윤곽의 미묘한 떨림, 고아한 흠집과 얼룩이 만드는 달항아리의 오라는 한국이 추구하는 초월적인 아름다움 그 자체다.

Late art historian Soon-woo Choi eulogized the moon jar, writing, “The unwitting beauty of the indescribable amorphous circle and the world of white ... I’m enraptured by this naive and innocent beauty.” This unique aesthetic object, which is sometimes regarded as both the essence and height of Korean art, inspires many. Alain de Botton calls the moon jar “the ideal of modesty.” The snow-white shade, the delicate contours and the elegant cracks and smudges on the surface combine to create a singular aura, precisely the kind of transcendent beauty that characterizes Korea as a whole.

하늘, 땅, 사람, 우주가 담긴 한글: Hangeul: An Alphabet That Contains the Sky, the Earth, People and the Universe Itself

세종은 누구나 글을 읽고 쓸 수 있는 세상이 오길 바랐다. <훈민정음>의 머리글 중 “나랏말싸미 듕귁에 달아 문자와로 서르 사맛디 아니할세”라는 문장은 세종이 새 글자를 만들게 된 배경과 함께 그가 꿈꾼 세상이 무엇이었는지를 내포하고 있다. 발음기관의 모양을 직관적으로 표현한 자음을 만들고, 하늘과 땅, 그 사이에 사람이 있는 형상을 더한 모음이 하나로 합쳐져 글자를 이룬다. 외국인들은 처음에 한글의 동그라미, 세모, 네모가 혼합된 아름다움에 반하고, 말하는 소리대로 글을 적을 수 있는 한글의 유연함에 다시 한번 놀란다.

Korea’s King Sejong hoped to bring about a world in which all people could read and write. In the preface to Hunminjeongeum — the document that introduced the Korean alphabet, Hangeul — Sejong’s reasoning is laid forth: “Because the spoken language of our country is different from that of China, it does not match written Chinese language.” Hangeul’s consonants represent the natural shapes our mouth make while pronouncing different sounds, while its vowels represent the sky and the ground below, with humans in between. These letters are combined in a logical, efficient way to form syllables.

한글 창제에 대한 세종의 위대한 계획은 국립한글박물관에서 진행 중인 <훈민정음, 천년의 문자 계획> 상설 전시를 통해서 살펴볼 수 있다. <훈민정음> 서문을 비롯해 주시경과 제자들이 쓴 우리말 사전 원고, <말모이>와 같은 문화재급 소장 자료들을 마주할 수 있다.

문화체육관광부는 한복의 한류 창출 프로젝트 ‘한복 웨이브’를 진행하고 있다. 지난해 말에는 패션 디자이너 김영진이 운영하는 차이킴을 비롯한 여러 한복 브랜드와 함께 70여 벌의 한복을 제작했다. 해당 프로젝트의 디지털 패션쇼는 공식 웹사이트(hanbokwave.com)를 통해 감상할 수 있다.

바람의 옷, 한복: Clothes of the Wind, Hanbok

1993년 한국인 최초로 파리 프레타포르테 쇼에 참가한 이영희 디자이너의 한복을 두고, 당시 <르몽드>의 저널리스트였던 로랑스 베나임은 “바람의 옷”이라 표현했다. 한복은 평면으로 재단해 만들지만 인체에 닿는 순간 입체성을 띤다. 여러 벌의 옷이 겹쳐 층층이 쌓인 풍성한 실루엣, 치마의 곡선미가 자아내는 기품 있는 율동감, 사람의 움직임에 따른 술의 미세한 떨림 등 한복의 면면은 바람의 자유로움과 유연함을 닮았다.

When the hanbok (traditional Korean outfit) made by designer Young-hee Lee, whose ready-to-wear collection was featured at Paris Fashion Week in 1993, was witnessed by Laurence Benaïm, a Le Monde journalist at the time, she described it as “the clothes of the wind.” The panels of a hanbok are flat, but from the moment it’s worn, it takes on a three-dimensional quality. The multiple layers of cloth, the elegant curves of the design and the gentle trembling of the tassels with each subtle movement of the human body all evoke the freedom and fluidity of the wind.

유네스코 세계자연유산에 오른 한국의 갯벌은 전남 신안, 전북 고창, 충남 서천, 전남 보성과 순천 총 4곳이다. 특히 서천 갯벌에서는 국제자연보전연맹(IUCN)이 지정한 적색목록 멸종위급종이자 전 세계에 300여 쌍만 살아 있는 것으로 알려진 넓적부리도요가 관찰된다.

The four South Korean gaetbeol (tidal flats) recognized by UNESCO are spread across South Chungcheong-do Province, North Jeolla-do Province and South Jeolla-do Province. The endangered spoon-billed sandpiper has been spotted on Korea’s gaetbeol.

공존하는 땅, 갯벌: Gaetbeol, Places Where Everything Coexists

한국 국토 면적의 2.4%를 차지하는 갯벌에는 세계적으로 멸종위기에 처한 22종을 비롯해 총 2150종의 동식물군이 살고 있다. 2021년 유네스코는 한국의 갯벌을 세계자연유산으로 등재했다. “한국의 갯벌이 지구 생물다양성의 보존을 위해 세계적으로 중요하고 의미 있는 서식지 중 하나이며 멸종위기 철새의 기착지로서 가치가 크다”는 게 그 이유다. 갯벌에는 식물플랑크톤을 비롯해 조개, 바지락, 낙지 등 다양한 생물이 살고 있으며 어민들은 갯벌을 통해 삶을 이어간다. 모든 생물이 공존하는 공간인 것이다.

Approximately 2,150 species of animals and plants, including 22 species which are endangered worldwide, live in gaetbeol (Korean tidal flats). These areas account for 2.4% of Korea’s total land area. In 2021, UNESCO listed Korea’s tidal flats as a Natural World Heritage Site, stating that they are one of the most important and meaningful habitats in the world for the preservation of biodiversity, and they provide a valuable stopover refuge for many endangered migratory birds. What’s more, many local fishermen continue to earn their living from the flats. They are spaces where many different living things coexist.

서울한양도성과 북한산성, 탕춘대성은 2027년을 목표로 유네스코 세계유산 등재를 추진하고 있다. 전시 <수위도성-도성을 지키는 성, 탕춘대성>(한양도성박물관, 9월 28일까지)은 서울 성곽의 가치를 탐구할 수 있는 기회다.

옛 도성을 걷는 즐거움, 서울한양도성: The Joy of Walking the Old City Walls, Hanyangdoseong

서울한양도성은 6세기 전부터 이 나라의 산과 땅을, 과거와 현재를 잇는다. 산의 능선과 땅의 생김에 순응하며 쌓은 성의 총길이는 약 18.6km. 그중 약 70%가 살아남거나 중건됐다. 도성의 백미는 성곽을 걸을 때 드러난다. 조선의 학자 유득공은 이 행위에 ‘순성놀이’라는 이름을 붙였다. 도성을 한 바퀴 빙 돌아서 안팎의 멋진 경치를 구경하는 이 유희는 지금도 현대적인 건축물의 마천루와 옛집의 기와지붕이 한데 어우러진 장면을 느리게 감상하려는 산책자들에 의해 매일, 성곽 곳곳에서 행해지고 있다.

For more than six centuries, Hanyangdoseong — Seoul’s Fortress Wall — has connected the nation’s mountains and urban features as well as its past and present. The fortress, which extends for 18.6km, was built to conform to the natural topography of the area. As one walks alongside the fortress, the best parts of the city are revealed. Doing a full lap around the fortification was dubbed by the 18^th-century Korean scholar Deuk-gong Yu as sunseong nori, which roughly translates to “castle pilgrimage game.” Today, hikers continue the tradition, following the walls to admire the wonderful scenery.

애틋한 삶의 무대, 골목: A Humble Stage for Day-to-Day Life

골목은 도시의 민낯이다. 한 사람의 미시적 역사를 목도하고 싶을 때 큰길가에서 실핏줄처럼 뻗어나간 이 좁은 길이 극장이자 무대가 되어준다. 골목의 풍경-낮은 집과 오래된 대문, 담장과 놀이터, 길모퉁이 오래된 가게들-엔 결 다른 광물이 켜켜이 중첩된 지층처럼 도시의 기억이 차곡차곡 쌓여 있다. 재개발의 광풍이 여전한 한국에서 도시의 옛 사진첩 같은 골목들은 지금도 재빠른 속도로 삭제되고 있다. 낡고 허름한 골목과 노포, 곧 유물이 될 장소를 지키는 삶을 만날 수 있는 곳에 젊은 인파가 붐비는 이유다.

Alleys are the face of a city unmasked. These narrow roads that branch out from main streets like veins are both a theater and a stage. In the scenery of these alleys — low-rise houses, old gates and fences, playgrounds and long-standing cornerstores — memories of the city have accumlated like geological layers. In Korea, where redevelopment is all the rage and certain areas are being erased at a rapid pace, the alleys serve as old photo albums of a city. If you don’t seize the moment and visit such places now, you may never have the chance.

서울의 숨골, 한강: A Place to Unwind, the Hangang River

The Hangang River used to be known as Hangaram, han meaning “big” and garam meaning “river.” Starting from the Taebaek Mountain Range and flowing all the way to the Yellow Sea, the main branch of the river travels for 497km and reaches a width of 1.5km. The grandeur of the Hangang River is bolstered by its historic significance — since the Paleolithic Era, it has served as a lifeline for human communities. It is also a place to seek out Mother Nature as it contains islands, wetlands and ecological parks. This waterway is a place to unwind for the residents of Seoul and other cities along its banks.

As other major cities competed for the distinction of having the tallest skyscrapers, Seoul, with a population of about 10 million, was always a step behind. This was partly out of concern for the protection of cultural assets. More recently, though, the desire to create a harmonious city has led to impressive changes in Seoul’s skyline. The extraordinary contrast between architecture from the Joseon Era (1392-1910), modern buildings from the ’70s and ’80s (when Korea was developing very rapidly) and super-high skyscrapers built using cutting-edge technology, makes Seoul’s night views unique and beautiful.

The adjectives compact, neat and elegant describe Korean architecture. Let’s look at six places that showcase the beauty of Korean architecture.

1_ ‘오묘하고 아름다운 집’이란 뜻의 현암은 사유원 건물 중 첫 번째로 지어진 곳으로, 수목원의 풍경과 일체를 이룬다.
Hyeonam, which means “mysterious and beautiful house,” blends in perfectly with the landscape of the arboretum.
2_ 소나무와 석재, 계곡, 연못 등이 한데 어우러진 전통 한국식 정원인 유원 안에는 호젓한 정자 사야정이 위치한다.
Sayajeong Pavilion, nestled among the pine trees and rocks, is situated in Sayuwon’s traditional Korean garden.

사유원 일본으로 밀반출하려던 한국의 모과나무를 전량 매입한 일을 계기로 수많은 나무 분재를 소유하게 된 태창철강의 유재성 회장은 지난 2006년 수목원을 만들겠다는 목표로 경북 군위에 약 66만m²에 달하는 부지를 사들였다. 이후 승효상 건축가와 의기투합해 이 땅을 ‘생각하는 정원’이라는 뜻의 ‘사유원’이라 이름 짓고 본격적으로 가꿔나갔다. 콘크리트와 돌벽으로 둘러싸인 완전한 사유의 공간인 명정, 장자의 소요유에서 이름을 딴 ‘자유롭게 거닐며 다니는 집’이란 뜻의 소요헌과 같이 승효상과 알바루 시자 등의 뛰어난 건축가가 설계한 공간을 만날 수 있는 사유원은 하나의 거대한 건축 박물관과 다름없다. 정영선과 가와기시 마쓰노부의 손길이 닿은 우아한 조경 또한 감상 포인트. 내부에는 카페와 레스토랑이 자리해 미식도 즐길 수 있다. 사유원은 지난해 9월 정식 개장하였으며, 현재 사전 예약제로 운영되고 있어 공식 웹사이트를 통해 예약 후 관람 가능하다.

Sayuwon Taechang Steel chairman Jae-sung Yoo came to own countless bonsai trees through purchasing a set of quince trees that was set to be smuggled into Japan.
In 2006, he bought an area of almost 660,000m² in Gunwi-gun County, North Gyeongsang-do Province, for the purpose of creating an arboretum. He later connected with architect H-sang Seung. Together, they settled on the name Sayuwon, which means “a garden for thinking” and set about cultivating the area. Sayuwon includes buildings designed by Seung and Álvaro Siza, including Myeongjeong, a space enclosed by walls.
Also, there are cafés inside, so you can take a rest with a cup of coffee. Sayuwon officially opened in September of last year, and is operated on a pre-booking system. You can make a reservation through the official website.

의정부미술도서관 국내 최초의 미술 전문 공립도서관인 의정부미술도서관은 도서관과 미술관의 역할을 동시에 수행하고 있다. 그로 인해 기존의 공립도서관과는 사뭇 다른 감각적인 모습을 하고 있는데, 건물 내 모든 장소를 연결하는 중앙의 원형 계단과 펼쳐진 책을 연상케 하는 구조로 개방감을 주는 평면 공간, 곡선으로 배치돼 예술적인 영감을 불러 일으키는 서가 등이 그 예다. 더불어 의정부미술도서관은 미술 전문가와 시민이 소통하는 장소로서도 기능하고 있다. 신진 작가들이 전문적인 작업과 전시를 할 수 있도록 가변적으로 구성한 작업실과 상설·기획전시실, 야외를 활용한 확장형 전시 공간을 갖추고 있으며, 3층 프로그램 존에서는 시민들을 위한 수준 높은 미술 관련 프로그램을 진행한다.

Uijeongbu Art Library Korea’s first public library that specializes in art, Uijeongbu Art Library serves as both a library and an art gallery. The facility looks very different from your average public library, with a circular central staircase that connects all the interior spaces, a flat open space that resembles an open book and bookshelves that are arranged in curves. The library functions partly as a place where ordinary citizens can communicate with art experts. It is equipped with a studio where new artists can both work and hold exhibitions; exhibition spaces for permanent and special exhibitions; and an outdoor area. The program zone on the third floor hosts high-quality art programs designed for nonexperts.

남양성모성지 대성당남양성모성지는 병인박해 때 천주교 신자들이 처형된 순교지로, 1991년 성모에 봉헌되어 우리나라의 첫 성모성지로 선포된 곳이다. 봉헌 20주년을 맞은 지난 2011년, 이곳의 주임 신부인 이상각 신부가 성지 건축에 천착해온 세계적인 건축가 마리오 보타에게 대성당 설계를 의뢰했다. 이후 마리오 보타는 한만원 건축가가 이끄는 HnSa건축사사무소와 협업하여 수많은 수정 끝에 지난 2020년 성당을 완성시켰다. 건축물의 하이라이트는 북쪽에 위치한 40m 높이의 두 탑이며, 반원형 지붕에는 천창이 있어 시시각각 다채로운 풍경을 만들어낸다. 이 외에도 남양성모성지 대성당에는 기도를 위한 8개의 예배당을 비롯해 제단, 소성당 등이 있으며, 스위스 건축가 페터 춤토어가 문화를 통해 종교를 만나는 경험을 선사할 티 채플(Tea Chapel)을 9년째 설계하고 있다. 성당 내부는 화요일부터 일요일까지 오전 11시에 진행되는 미사 시간에만 개방되니 방문에 참고할 것.

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Namyang The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Namyang was built on a site where Catholic martyrs were executed during the Byeongin Persecution. In 1991, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, making it the first such shrine in Korea. On the 20^th anniversary of the dedication, Father Sang-gak Lee commissioned world-renowned architect Mario Botta to design the enormous cathedral. The highlight of this landmark is the two 40m towers on the north side; the semicircular skylights create an ever-changing sea of color.
In addition, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has spent nine years working on the design of the Tea Chapel, which aims to deliver the experience of religion through culture. The cathedral is open only during Mass, which runs from Tuesday to Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.

송은지난해 9월 도산대로에 문을 연 송은 신사옥은 런던 테이트 모던 미술관, 2008년 베이징올림픽 주경기장 등을 설계한 헤어초크 & 드 뫼롱이 한국에서 진행한 첫 번째 프로젝트다. 미니멀한 일체형 구조와 긴 창문, 날카로운 삼각 형태의 조각적 외관으로 오픈 당시부터 화제가 되었다. 특히 눈길을 끄는 것은 목판 거푸집을 사용해 목판의 문양과 결을 통해 소나무의 질감을 표현한 콘크리트 외벽이다. 이는 ‘송은(松隱)’의 뜻인 ‘숨어 있는 소나무’에서 영감받았다고. 높은 정면이 대로를 향해 있는 것과 달리 낮은 뒷면에는 정원이 있다는 점도 흥미로운 요소다. 또한 헤어초크 & 드 뫼롱은 전시 공간과 사무실, 공공장소 등이 혼합되도록 설계했는데, 여기서 예술과 예술가, 대중과 컬렉터 모두를 위한 공간을 만들고자 한 그들의 의도를 엿볼 수 있다.

SongEun The new landmark building for ST International and the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation opened its doors in the center of Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, last September. The first project carried out in Korea by renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the building has been a talking point since day one due to its sharp, triangular form. But perhaps the most striking feature is the concrete exterior, which has a wood grain texture. It is said that Herzog & de Meuron took inspiration for this from the word songeun, which means “hidden pine tree.” The building includes a harmonious blend of exhibition spaces, offices and public areas, which creates a space for art, artists, the public and collectors alike.

가회동 두 집 지난해 말, 경복궁과 창덕궁 사이에 자리한 가회동에 1930년대의 한옥과 1960년대의 양옥을 연결해 만든 이색 건축물이 나타났다. ‘가회동 두 집’은 2018년 아모레퍼시픽이 한옥과 양옥을 차례대로 매입해 3년간의 리노베이션을 거쳐 탄생한 곳으로, 국립중앙박물관 ‘사유의 방’, 학고재 갤러리 등의 작업으로 알려진 원오원아키텍스의 최욱 대표가 설계했다. 두 건물을 가로막았던 6m의 옹벽을 헐고 사이에 중정을 만들어 시각적으로 이어지도록 했으며, 목조 기둥, 서까래 같은 기존의 형태를 최대한 살리되 한지 창살을 유리창으로 대체하는 등 현대적인 요소를 더했다. 과거의 건축물을 창의적으로 복원해 전통미와 현대성을 두루 갖춘 가회동 두 집을 통해 방문객들은 한국의 근대 주거 100년사를 한눈에 담을 수 있다.

Gahoe-dong DUZIP At the end of last year, an exotic building created by connecting a hanok (traditional Korean house) from the 1930s with a house from the 1960s appeared in Gahoe-dong, Seoul. Amorepacific purchased the two buildings in 2018 and spent three years on renovation work. The design was the brainchild of Wook Choi, the CEO of ONE O ONE Architects, whose other works include A Room of Quiet Contemplation at the National Museum of Korea. The 6m retaining wall between the two buildings was removed and a courtyard was built in the middle to provide a visual link between the structures. Contemporary elements were then added. Gahoe-dong DUZIP allows visitors to take in 100 years of Korea’s modern dwelling history in a single glance.

철쭉과 억새사이 황매산군립공원의 관광 휴게소인 철쭉과 억새 사이는 홍익대학교 건축학과 임영환 교수와 디림건축사사무소의 김선현 대표가 설계한 곳으로, 2021 대한민국 공간문화대상 대상을 수상했다. 반원 모양으로 펼쳐진 건물은 마치 이가 빠진 것처럼 공간이 군데군데 비어 있는데, ‘철쭉과 억새사이’는 그 사이로 보이는 철쭉과 억새의 모습을 상상해 지은 이름이다. 주위를 거닐다 보면 자연과 긴밀하게 조화를 이루도록 설계한 건축가의 섬세함이 돋보인다. 산세를 거스르지 않는 높이, 산과의 연결성, 바위가 많은 황매산의 특징을 살린 조약돌길 등에서 이를 확인할 수 있다. 또한 이 건물에는 콘크리트 뼈대에 철을 입히는 방식이 적용됐으며, 외장재로는 잘 부식되지 않는 내후성강이 사용됐다. 이를 통해 철쭉과 억새사이는 계절의 흐름에 따라 자연에 동화된 채 변화하며 황매산의 역사를 축적해나갈 것이다.

Between Azaleas and Silvergrass Between Azaleas and Silvergrass is a tourist rest area in Hwangmaesan County Park, South Gyeonsang-do Province. Designed by Yeong-hwan Lim, a professor of architecture at Hongik University and Seon-hyeon Kim, the CEO of D.LIM architects, it won the grand prize at the 2021 Korea Space Culture Awards. The semicircular building has pockets of empty space that look like missing teeth, and the name comes from imagining azaleas and silvergrass filling these spaces. The delicate touch of the architects can be seen in the low, curved building that connects to the slope of Hwangmaesan Mountain. The numerous rocks of the mountain inspired their decision to create a pebble access road. Constructed with steel set upon a concrete frame, the building was designed to change colors in line with the changing seasons and be stained with spots of rust.

The photographs of Korea from the 1950s and 1960s are often a window into the country’s postwar recovery. But the documentary photographs of Han Youngsoo take us further, to a strange, exotic place that was rapidly modernizing, a place where the lives and routines of Korea’s suave youth unfolded.

앙증맞은 라탄 토트백을 손에 들고 있는 여성의 입가에 희미하게 번진 옅은 웃음, 그 앞에서 시선을 아래로 떨군 남자. 둘은 무슨 대화를 나누고 있을까? 사진가는 이 비밀스러운 순간을 어떻게 포착했을까?
사진가 한영수(1933~1999년)의 네 번째 사진집, <연분홍 치마가 봄바람에>를 보다 보면 좀처럼 다음 장으로 쉽게 넘어갈 수가 없다. 꼬리를 무는 질문 때문이다. 이 장면이 정말 1956~1963년의 서울인가? 대범한 챙의 라피아 해트로 한껏 꾸민 여인과 그녀가 앉아 있는 저 한강의 모래톱은 실재했던 것인가?
한국 근대사에서 1956년과 1963년 사이를 관통하는 주제는 ‘한국전쟁’과 연결된 단어와 표상들뿐이다. 그런데 사진가 한영수는 아주 낯선 장면들을 내놓는다. 그 안엔 한껏 치장한 젊은이들, 한여름 뜨거운 한강에서 뱃놀이와 물놀이를 즐기는 청춘들, 길거리에서, 찻집에서, 공원에서 각자의 읽을 거리에 몰두한 채 한가로운 시간을 보내는 도시인들이 있다. 아주 세련되고, 근사하며, 단단해 보이는 삶이.
어째서 한영수 앞엔 이런 장면들이 있었을까? 그가 부러 저런 인물, 순간이 있는 곳만 찾아다닌 걸까? 답에 접근하기 위해 그의 역사를 먼저 살폈다. 한국 최초의 사진 연구회 ‘신선회’ 창단 멤버. 올해의 문화인상(1999년)을 비롯해 화려한 수상 경력과 포트폴리오를 가진 1세대 광고 사진가. 그의 작품이 예술 세계로 확장된 것은 1999년, 작고 이후부터다.

A subtle smile plays across the lips of a woman holding a pair of sunglasses and an adorable rattan tote bag as the man next to her looks down. What were they talking about? How did the photographer capture such a mysterious moment?
As I flip through the pages of When the Spring Wind Blows, the fourth collection of photographs by Han Youngsoo (1933–1999), I often have to pause to reflect. Are these really scenes from Seoul between 1956 and 1963? Did women really wear tube top swimsuits and broad-brimmed raffia hats back then, as they sat on sandbars beside the Hangang River?
Han’s photographs are full of unfamiliar scenes. They depict young people dolled up despite the postwar privations, youths swimming and boating in the Hangang River and city dwellers reading on the street, in teahouses and in parks. Their lives look very stable, sharp and sophisticated.
How did Han stumble upon such scenes? To find the answer, I take a look at his background. Han was a founding member of the Shinsunwhue (New Line Group), Korea’s first photography club, which was dedicated to realism. He was among the first generation of commercial photographers and won the Culture Prize of the Year in 1999. After his death that same year, his work began to be considered art.

아버지의 필름을 물려받은 딸이 약력 바깥의 이야기를 세상에 꺼냈다. 서울에서 사진을 전공하고 헝가리에서 시각디자인을 공부한 한선정 한영수문화재단 대표는 1999년부터 지금까지 오롯이 혼자 한영수의 작업을 아카이빙하고 있다. 네 권의 사진집 <서울 모던 타임즈>(2014년), <한영수: 꿈결 같은 시절>(2015년), <시간 속의 강>(2017년), <연분홍 치마가 봄바람에>(2020년)가 그 수고의 결실이다. 그 사이사이 한국과 부다페스트, 뉴욕, LA, 하버드대학교에서 열린 아홉 번의 개인전, 스물다섯 번의 그룹전도 한선정이 만든 성취다. 한국의 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등을 비롯해 뉴욕국제사진센터(ICP), 헝가리 사진박물관, LA카운티미술관(LAMCA) 등 세계 유수의 박물관들이 한영수의 사진을 수집, 소장하고 있다.
사진집과 평론집에 나오지 않은 이야기가 더 필요했다. 한선정 대표에게 만남을 청했다. 그의 삶, 취향과 지향 그리고 저 빛나는 미감의 원천이 궁금했다. “아버지가 그런 시선을 가질 수 있었던 것은 당신이 사진 속 그들과 같은 삶을 살았기 때문이에요. 중절모에 세련된 양복을 즐겨 입고, 눈 내리는 날 도시를 배회하고, 당대의 문화 예술인이 즐겨 찾았던 살롱에서 시간을 보내며 서울 곳곳을 누빈 모던 보이의 삶. 무엇보다 아버지가 전후 한국을 바라본 관점이 이런 장면을 만들었죠. 무너진 것을 되돌아보며 멈추는 대신 자기 인생을 다시 세우려는 사람들, 미래로 나아가려는 도시의 생명력을 발견한 기록이 이 사진들에 있습니다.”

After inheriting her father’s rolls of film, the photographer’s daughter, Han Sunjung, revealed his genius. Han Sunjung, who majored in photography in Seoul and studied visual design in Hungary, is the director of the Han Youngsoo Foundation. She has helped produce four volumes of her father’s photography. She has also submitted her father’s work to 25 group exhibitions and organized nine solo shows worldwide.
“His perspective was made possible by the fact that he was living the same life as the people in his photographs,” Sunjung says about her father.

한영수 사진의 가치는 장면의 아름다움 너머, 순수예술로서 갖는 미학적 완성도에도 있다. 한선정과 그의 유작전을 함께 만든 헝가리 사진박물관 학자 킨체시 커롤리는 한영수의 사진이 케르테츠, 드와노 그리고 카르티에 브레송의 인본주의 사진과 교차한다고 말한다. “사각 프레임 안 어느 한 부분도 빈 곳이 없다. 계속 사진에 시선을 머물게 해서 구석구석 모든 사람들의 행동을, 거리의 낡은 간판까지도 둘러보게 만든다.”
그 완벽하고 흠잡을 데 없는 구도와 타이밍은 찍을 대상을 섬세하고 분별력 있게 관찰할 적절한 거리를 찾아내는 한영수의 능력과, 원하는 사진 한 컷을 위해 수백 번의 셔터를 누른 끈질긴 노력에 기인한다. LA카운티미술관 큐레이터 버지니아 문은 캔디드 포토(의식하지 않은 자연스러운 모습의 사진)의 대가 카르티에 브레송이 ‘결정적인 순간’을 포착하는 사진가라면 한영수는 그와 다른 순간을 드러낸다고 말한다. “한영수는 평면적 형태와 입체감 그리고 사람들이 살아 움직이는 순간들에 구조를 부여하는 방법을 터득했다. 한영수는 그런 순간이 오기를 그 자리에 서서 기다리는 무한한 인내심을 가져야 했다. (중략) 그가 남긴 사진들이 가진 진정한 장점은 사진 속의 사람들이 아무도 보지 않는다고 생각하는 순간, 즉 무의식적 순간에 드러나는 것이다.”

“I’m talking about the life of a ‘modern boy’ in Seoul: wearing an elegant suit with a fedora, wandering the city in the snow, spending time in teahouses frequented by the cultural and artistic figures of the time and watching the latest movies in the theaters. Most importantly, those scenes were the product of my father’s perspective on postwar Korea. His photos record his discovery of the vitality of a city striding into the future, of people seeking to rebuild their lives, instead of stopping to gaze back at what’s gone.”
On top of its historic value, Han Youngsoo’s photography is also widely admired for its aesthetic perfection. Kincses Károly, a scholar at the Hungarian Museum of Photography who organized a posthumous exhibition the year Han Youngsoo died, said that his work intersects with the humanist photography of André Kertész, Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson. “There are no vacant spaces inside the visual frame,” says Károly. “His photographs hold your gaze and make you look at the actions of everyone depicted, and even at the old street signs.”

한영수의 세계가 보여준 낯선 장면의 궁극에 ‘여성’이 있다. 그가 선택한 순간 안에서 여성은 주눅 들지 않고, 교태 어린 웃음을 가장하지도 않으며, 생활의 굴곡 앞에서 무감하지도 않다. 대신 당대에 유행한 패션으로 한껏 빼입은 채 거리를 활보한다. <연분홍 치마가 봄바람에>에 평론을 쓴 김수진 대한민국역사박물관 학예연구관은 이 장면들을 “치장하는 것에도 당당하고, 힘든 노동에도 당당하며, 고달픈 아이 건사에도 당당한 여자들의 행렬”이라고 표현한다.
“한영수가 내보여준 훌륭함은 그가 이 여성들을 방해하지 않고 또 지배하려 하지도 않으면서 자신만의 예민한 감각에 기대어 조금씩 각도를 비껴가며 여성들의 면면을 섬세하게 포착한다는 점에 있을 것이다. (중략) 한영수가 매혹된 피사체는 자유주의의 바람을 타고 ‘전화(戰火)의 그을음’을 넘어서려는 여성이다. 그 결과는, 전후 현대사를 살아간 진짜 여성-이미지-을 비로소 우리에게 건네주었다는 데 있다.”
한선정은 아버지의 필름과 인화 사진을 살피고 마주하는 일을 “아버지와 생전에 자주 하지 못했던 대화를 가슴으로 나누는 일, 그 시절로 돌아가 나란히 아버지의 도시를 걷는 일”이라고 말했다. 그것은 비단 둘의 대화만은 아닐 것이다. 한영수가 선택한 한 시절의 조각 앞에 선 우리도 그와 함께 걸으며 ‘상처를 딛고 일어나 그럼에도 꿋꿋이 살아가는’ 삶들을 본다.

The impeccable composition and timing of Han Youngsoo’s work is linked to his ability to find the appropriate distance from his subjects and willingness to take hundreds of shots. Virginia Moon, an assistant curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, observed that if Cartier-Bresson managed to capture the “decisive moment,” Han Youngsoo had the “infinite patience to stand and wait for such moments to occur.”
The scenes revealed by Han Youngsoo are full of women. The women in his chosen moments aren’t too intimidated to stand next to men, don’t smile coquettishly and don’t slump with vacant eyes before the challenges of their lives. Kim Soojin, curator at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History and the author of a critical essay in When the Spring Wind Blows, reflects that “The excellence shown by Han Youngsoo lies in the delicacy with which he photographed these women ... The subjects that so fascinated him were women who rode the wave of liberalism as they sought to rise above the ruins of the war. In the end, that is what enabled him to give us a true image of the women who lived through the postwar period.”
For Sunjung, sorting through her father’s work has been like “going back to that time and walking through the city alongside my father and having the kind of heart-to-heart conversations we didn’t often have.” But Sunjung and Youngsoo aren’t the only ones who can have such conversations. As we view Han’s photos, we enter into the lives of individuals from that long-ago era who rose above their difficulties.

Squeezed between the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the 38^th Parallel, Goseong, Gangwon-do Province, has long been associated with conflict and division. Of late, though, youthful entrepreneurs have been creating a new future for this area, which overflows with green mountains, white sand and blue waters.

코앞의 북녘 남한에도 고성이, 북한에도 고성이 있다. 이곳이 세계 유일의 ‘분단 군’, 피란민과 실향민의 땅이라는 것을 자각한 건 양양에 사는 친구의 말 한마디 때문이다. “통일전망대? 화진포? 거긴 그냥 북한이나 마찬가지야. 그 동네 주민들 중엔 북한 사투리 쓰는 사람도 있을걸?” 그 말 한마디에 두 장소를 여정에 추가했다. 여권 파워 세계 2위를 자랑하는 대한민국 여권으로 절대 닿을 수 없는 땅을 맨눈으로 볼 수 있다니, 게다가 ‘북한이나 마찬가지인’ 동네라니.
‘과연 북녘이구나’를 실감한 건 거리 때문이다. 짐작보다 훨씬 멀었다. 고성이 이렇게 컸나? 민통선 검문소에서 출입 신고서를 쓴 후 무장한 육군에게 허가증을 받는 과정은 거리감을 더 부추겼다. 151개의 계단을 지나 마침내 고성통일전망타워 꼭대기에 섰다. ‘날씨가 좋으면’이라는 조건과 통창 앞에 도열한 망원경들이 무색하게, 금강산과 해금강(海金剛), 지금은 닫힌 육로와 철로, 뱃길이 코앞에 있었다. 디지털 망원경이 보여주는 남한군과 북한군 초소는 잠시 외면하고 그저 저 앞, 사람 손이 닿지 않아 한껏 청초한 자연을 눈에 담고 싶었다. 바다 한가운데 솟은 기암과 작은 섬들, 2000여 개의 봉우리를 품은 외금강의 눈부신 녹음을 맨눈으로 샅샅이 훑었다. 이곳부터 손에 잡힐 듯 가까운 북고성의 저 해변까진 3.8km. 30분 정도만 걸어 나가면 북한에 닿을 수 있다는 사실이 새삼 신기하고, 한편으론 매일 산책하는 거리보다도 더 짧은 거리에 있는 동네에 절대 가닿을 수 없다는 현실이 슬펐다.

On the Doorstep of North Korea “Goseong-gun County is part of both North and South Korea,” a friend tells me. “The people there probably use a North Korean dialect.” My curiosity is piqued, and I resolve to visit in order to glimpse North Korea, a place that few South Koreans ever step foot in despite the fact that South Korea ranks second in terms of global passport power.
After a long journey, I arrive at the Goseong Unification Observatory. The process of filling out an entrance declaration form at a checkpoint and receiving a permit from an armed soldier drives home an awareness of where I am. After climbing 151 steps, I finally stand at the top of the lookout tower. Right before me is North Korea: the jagged outcrops of Geumgangsan Mountain, the coastline stretching northwards and a set of unused railway tracks. I gaze upon all the shoals and islets rising out of the sea and the dazzling green on the slopes of Geumgangsan Mountain. It’s 3.8km from here to the coast of North Goseong, which appears close enough to touch. I’m saddened by the fact that it’s forbidden to set foot in this sublime landscape that’s just a 30 minute walk away.

아쉬움을 뒤로하고 화진포로 내려왔다. 분단 전 김일성과 그의 처, 아들 김정일이 종종 찾았던 별장이 15분 거리에 있다. ‘화진포의 성’으로 불리는 이 건물은 원래 선교사 셔우드 홀이 지은 예배당. 지금은 한국전쟁 관련 자료를 전시한 역사안보전시관으로 쓰인다. 궁금한 건 전시물이 아니라 막강한 부와 권력을 거머쥐었던 남자가 탐내고 누렸던 ‘뷰’다. 그에게 심신의 평안을 준 풍광은 어떤 모습일까? 2층, 아치형 외벽에 난 3개의 창 앞에 그 답이 있었다. 눈밭 같은 백사장과 짙푸른 대해, 사철 푸른 송림이 파노라마로 펼쳐지는 그 뷰 앞에서 ‘김일성이 이 별장을, 특히 이 창을 계속 누렸다면 역사가 달라지지 않았을까?’, ‘언제쯤 구글맵에서 훔쳐본 평양의 찻집을, 백두산 아래 캠핑장을 갈 수 있을까?’ 같은 생각을 하며 노을이 물들 때까지 오래오래 서있었다.

I put my sadness aside and head down to Hwajinpo. By car, it takes 15 minutes to reach the cottage that Kim Il-sung used to visit with his family before the current boundary between the two Koreas was set. This villa is currently used by the History & Security Museum to display Korean War artifacts. I am less curious about the exhibition than about the view enjoyed by Kim Il-sung himself. I climb the stairs to the second floor and stand next to three arched windows that jut out from the room. Taking in the view of the snow-white sand, navy blue ocean and emerald-green pines, I wonder how history might have turned out if Kim Il-sung had remained in this villa, particularly in front of this window. I stand there until the glow of the setting sun arrives, lost in thoughts such as “I wonder when I’ll be able to visit the teahouses of Pyongyang or camp at the foot of Baekdusan Mountain.”

비밀의 숲으로 철책 너머 금강산에 닿지 못한 아쉬움을 풀 곳이 있다. 향도원. 금강산 1만 2000봉이 시작되는 첫 봉우리, 신선봉 산기슭에 자리한 마을이다. 신선봉은 공식적으론 설악산 국립공원 구역으로 분류되지만 고성 사람들에겐 금강산 권역으로 여겨진다. 해발고도 1204m의 신선봉을 오르는 대신 그 아래 숲으로 향했다. ‘향도원 힐링 숲길’이라는 이름이 붙은 산책로가 거기에 있다. 여름이면 복숭아나무와 뽕나무, 금강송이 드리우는 시원한 그늘과 투명하고 차가운 계곡에 몸 담그려 찾는 피서객이 넘치는 곳. 무릉도원의 그 ‘도원’을 이름 삼은 동네답게 입구부터 산수가 수려하다. 너럭바위의 보조개 같은 웅덩이에 고인 물이 햇빛을 받아 반짝이고 꽃도 안 틔운 복숭아나무에선 희미한 단내가 났다. 이끼와 고사리, 자유분방하게 자란 나무들로 가득한 원시림엔 인적 대신 시시때때로 나타나 진로를 방해하는 거미줄, 새소리 그리고 나무가 뿜어내는 피톤치드로 가득했다. 졸졸 흐르는 계곡물 소리를 배경음악 삼아 천천히, 반 시간 정도 걷다 보면 선녀폭포가 나타난다. 3km 더 걸어야 닿는 굴바위가 최종 목적지였지만 볕에 앉기 좋게 데워진 너럭 바위의 유혹에 무너졌다. 신을 벗고 맨발을 계곡물에 담근 채 고운 기세로 떨어지는 폭포수가 쉼 없이 만드는 동그란 파동에 시선을 던지며 아쉬운 마음을 달랬다. 오늘은 금강산 주변 자락에서 맴돌았지만 가까운 미래에 저 많은 봉우리를 넘어 금강산 한가운데로 들어설 수 있기를 바라며.

Toward the Secret Forest There happens to be one place I can go to feel like I’m passing beyond the barbed wire and setting foot on Geumgangsan Mountain. This place is yangdowon, a village located at the foot of Sinseonbong Peak, which is classified as part of South Korea’s Seoraksan National Park. However, the people of Goseong view it as a distant outcropping of Geumgangsan Mountain.
Instead of climbing all the way up Sinseonbong Peak (1,204m), I head to the forest below to sample the Hyangdowon Healing Forest Trail. In summer, this area is filled with crowds seeking out the cool valleys and refreshing shade cast by the peach, mulberry and Geumgang pine trees. The landscape is beautiful right from the start of the path. The puddles on the flat rocks glisten in the sun, and the peach trees appear ready to blossom.
During a slow 30-minute walk, the murmuring of a flowing valley stream serves as background music before the Fairy Falls finally appear. I sit down on the flat rocks that have been nicely warmed by the sun’s rays. As I dip my bare feet in the water and turn my gaze toward the circular ripples created by the cascading waterfall, another regret creeps into my mind. While I have explored the outer reaches of Geumgangsan Mountain today, I hope that in the near future I’ll be able to venture into the heart of the mountain and spend several days wandering among its many outcrops.

낭만적인 휴양, 고성의 미래 전쟁과 피란, 실향이 벌써 두 세대 전의 역사인 젊은 세대에게 고성과 분단이라는 단어는 쉽게 연동되는 한 쌍이 아니다. 고성 특유의 한가로운 서정에 매료돼 터를 잡은 이, 서핑 문화가 만든 양양, 속초의 과부하된 열기에서 슬쩍 빠져나온 이들이 만든 카페, 서핑 숍, 공방, 갤러리 같은 공간들은 오랫동안 분단 군이라는 정체성에 갇혔던 고성에 새로운 바람을 불어넣고 있다. 봉포에 위치한 ‘이스트사이드바이브클럽’도 그중 하나. 패션 디자이너이자 대표 박조니와 그의 친구들, 디자이너, 모델, 서퍼, DJ 등으로 꾸려진 크루가 음악, 예술, 패션, 여행 컬처에 걸친 취향을 담아 만든 복합문화공간이다. 이곳이 인기를 얻은 건 태국, 발리, 쿠바, 자메이카 같은 휴양지의 분위기를 완벽하게 재현한 인테리어 때문만은 아니다. 박조니 대표는 2019년 산불의 화마가 집어삼킨 폐건물의 상흔을 굳이 지우지 않고 그 안에 ‘고성다움’을 있는 그대로 넣고 싶었다고 말한다. “산불이 남긴 흔적, 이 공간 어디에서나 고개를 돌리면 보이는 저 봉포 앞바다와 설악산, 울산바위가 고성 그 자체라고 생각해요. 굳이 지역 특산물로 뭔가를 만들고 로컬 출신 작가를 수소문해 전시회를 열기보단 자연스러운 걸 보여주고 싶어요. 여기저기 걸린 사진, 크고 작은 파티, 음악 같은 요소들이 다 ‘지금 고성에서 살고 있는’ 우리가 매일 느끼고 겪은 것에서 나온 창작물이자 산물이니까요.”

A Goseong Vacation For young South Koreans, two generations removed from the turmoil of war, “division” is not what Goseong is all about. People who have fallen in love with the unique atmosphere of Goseong are breathing new life into the region. Moving north up the coast from the excitement of Sokcho and the surfing culture of Yangyang, young entrepreneurs have established cafés, surf shops, workshops and galleries here. One of these is the East Side Vibe Club, in Bongpo. This is a multipurpose cultural space created by Park Journey, a fashion designer. He and his friends have infused the space with their taste in music, art, fashion and travel. The club has made a name for itself not just on account of its decor. Park says that after a raging forest fire swept through the area in 2019 he wanted to salvage the local character of the gutted building. “I think the traces left by the forest fire and all the things you can see from this building, like the coastal waters of Bongpo, Seoraksan Mountain and Ulsanbawi Rock, is what Goseong is all about,” he says.

뮤직 룸에서 LP 몇 장을 꺼내 듣고, 고성의 풍경을 몽환적인 시선으로 담은 사진가의 전시를 천천히 둘러본 후 바다로 나갔다. 서퍼가 파도를 가르는 해변을 찾고 싶었지만 오늘따라 유독 바람이 잔잔하다. 송지호해수욕장은 그럴 때 찾기 좋은 곳. 약 100m 폭, 2km 길이의 드넓은 백사장과 투명한 바다 그리고 수평선이 끝없이 펼쳐져 있다.
물이 빠져 드러난 젖은 모래사장 위로 성큼성큼 걸어 나갔다. 어떤 날엔 저 앞 무인도까지 이어지는 이 모랫길은 조개가 잘게 부서져서 만들어진 화진포의 아주 곱고 깨끗한 모래와 같은 출신이다. 발바닥 주름 사이로 스며드는 고운 알갱이의 감촉, 부드러운 바람에 차르르 굴러가는 조개껍데기 소리 같은 것을 온 감각으로 느끼며 해가 아주 뜨거운 여름날에 이곳을 다시 찾기로 마음먹었다. 어떤 역사는 이곳에서 영원히 움직이지 않는 기차처럼 멈춰 있지만 고성은 천천히 나아가고 있다. 새로운 세대와 함께, 즐겁고, 여유롭고, 명랑하게.

Before I leave, I pull out several LPs from the music room and check out the photography exhibition, a dreamlike exploration of local scenery. Surfers have been waiting for breakers, but the water is completely calm. On such days, Songjiho Beach Resort is the place to go. This 2km-long beach has shallow, transparent water and a view of a limitless horizon. I stroll along a sandy path that on some days extends to the deserted island of Jukdo, feeling the fine grains of sand sliding along the wrinkles on the soles of my feet, and listening to the sound of the gentle wind. At this moment, I decide to return on a scorching hot summer’s day. Although Goseong’s historical situation feels like a stationary train that will never budge, the area is slowly moving forward. And just like the new generation, this land is wonderfully free-spirited and cheerful.

When spring gives way to summer, the Hwanggang River
shines with a refreshing greenish tinge. The sandy shore
beckons the people of Hapcheon-gun County,
who make the most of this beautiful time of year.

중부내륙고속도로를 빠져나와 고령을 지날 무렵, 하늘이 갑자기 어두워지더니 우당탕탕 굵은 빗줄기가 퍼부었다. 10여 분이나 지났을까, 거짓말처럼 구름은 물러가고 찬란한 햇빛이 쏟아져 내렸다. 합천에 들어섰다. 물기를 한껏 머금은 들판과 가로수는 싱그러운 초록으로 빛나고 있었다. 한국의 초록은 지금이 가장 예쁘다. 봄이 여름으로 스미고 여름이 봄을 슬그머니 당기는 요즘, 푸른빛은 연두와 초록의 중간에 머문다. 옅지도 않고 짙지도 않고, 가볍지도 않고 무겁지도 않다. 군내를 지나 황강 가에 차를 세우고 힘껏 숨을 들이마셨다. 가슴속 깊이 맑고 차가운 공기가 들어왔다. 바람에 실려 오는 강의 향일 것이다.

I am standing in Hapcheon-ri Village, South Gyeongsang-do Province. The fields and trees alongside the street are bordered on one side by flowing water with a refreshing green hue. This is the time of year when Korea is at its greenest. Spring is gently transforming into summer, and the predominant color falls somewhere between light green and emerald. After passing through the town center, I park my car right beside the Hwanggang River and take a deep breath. The clean, chilly air fills my lungs to the brim. A faint fragrance like that of cucumber hits my nostrils. This is the scent of the river, carried by the wind.

Hambyeongnu Pavilion is one of the eight official scenic spots in Hapcheon-gun County. Residents sit with their backs against the pillars of Hambyeongnu and shoot the breeze.

합천에 온 이유는 황강마실길을 걷기 위해서다. 황강은 합천 군내를 가로지르는 강이다. 경남 거창 삼봉산(1254m)에서 발원해 도도산과 매화산, 청계산의 깊은 골짜기를 흐르고 흘러 합천 군내를 지나 낙동강 본류에 합류한다. 길이는 약 111km에 달한다. 황강마실길은 황강이 빚어내는 느긋하고 다정한 풍경을 옆에 두고 내내 걸을 수 있는데 강과 길 사이에는 들판과 습지, 숲길, 꽃밭 등 때로는 소박한, 때로는 게으른 풍경이 놓여 있다. 마실길이라는 이름이 붙은 데서 알 수 있듯, 길의 품새는 느긋하고 편안해서 운동화에 반바지 차림이면 충분하다.
황강마실길은 모두 4코스로 구성돼 있다. 가장 짧은 구간은 25분, 긴 구간도 1시간 40분 정도면 충분하다. 황강과 합천을 가장 잘 느낄 수 있는 코스는 1구간이다. 합천군문화예술회관에서 시작해 함벽루를 지나 공설운동장에서 끝난다. 총길이 2.78km의 수변 산책로인데, 황강의 운치를 제대로 느낄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 합천의 문화와 역사를 간직한 풍경도 만날 수 있다.

I’ve come to Hapcheon-gun County to walk the Masil-gil trail, which follows the Hwanggang. The river starts on Sambongsan Mountain (1,254m), in Geochang, South Gyeongsang-do Province, and runs through the deep valleys between the summits of Dodosan, Maehwasan and Cheonggyesan before passing through the center of Hapcheon-ri Village and joining up with the Nakdonggang River some 111km from its birthplace. The Masil-gil trail allows you to take in the warm, relaxed scenery of the river. The landscapes of meadowland, wetland and forest that lie between the path and the river are refreshingly plain and simple at times.

길을 걷는다. 바람이 등을 지그시 밀어준다. 자전거를 탄 한 무리의 사람들이 지나간다. 황강마실길은 자전거를 타기에도 좋다. 얼마 지나지 않아 합천8경 중 하나인 함벽루를 만난다. 1321년 고려 충숙왕 8년에 세워져 지금에 이르고 있다. 퇴계 이황, 남명 조식, 우암 송시열 등 조선의 내로라하는 시인 묵객들의 글이 누각 현판에 걸려 있는데, 이것만 봐도 이곳에서 마주하는 황강의 풍경이 어떨지 짐작이 간다. 누각에는 여인 둘이 이런저런 이야기를 나누고 있다. 강바람은 이런 이야기를 실어서 강에 떠내려 보낸다.

Among the trail’s four sections, the shortest takes 25 minutes to complete, while the longer ones take about an hour and a half. The first section is the best way to get a feel for the Hwanggang River. It begins at Hapcheon Culture and Arts Center and passes Hambyeongnu Pavilion before ending at Gongseol Stadium. Stretching 2.78km, this waterside path allows you to not only feel the quaint beauty of the river but also to soak up the culture and history of the region.

누각 뒤로 연호사라는 작은 절이 있는데, 해인사보다 무려 150년 앞서 창건된 고찰이다. 이곳에 서면 함벽루와 어우러진 황강의 경치를 감상할 수 있다. 아침 무렵 은은한 물안개가 필 때도 좋고 저물 무렵의 노을이 산 그림자와 함께 슬금슬금 내려올 때도 그때만의 운치가 있다. 건너편은 황강레포츠공원이다. 남정교를 건너면 닿는데 이곳에는 캠핑장도 조성되어 있다. 드넓게 펼쳐진 모래톱에는 드문드문 텐트가 쳐져 있다. 아이들은 물장구를 치며 신나게 논다. 여름은 어른에게는 무더운 계절이지만 아이에게는 신나는 물놀이의 계절이다. 합천에서 태어난 박태일 시인은 <황강> 연작을 썼는데, 그의 시를 읽어보면 황강의 예전 풍경이 어땠는지 희미하게나마 그려진다.

I head off down the path with the wind pressing against my back. A group of cyclists passes by, reminding me that walking is not the only way to enjoy the Masil-gil. Soon, I arrive at Hambyeongnu Pavilion, one of the officially chosen eight scenic spots of the area. Wood-carved calligraphy by notable Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) poets, writers and artists adorns the proud structure, which was built in 1321. Behind the pavilion is a small temple called Yeonhosa, which was established more than 150 years earlier than the UNESCO-recognized Haeinsa Temple, which also happens to be in Hapcheon-gun County. Standing here, I can appreciate the scenic harmony of the pavilion and the river. It’s a great spot in the morning, when fog lingers in the air, and it has a quaint sort of beauty in the evening, when the red sun sinks behind the ridges and the mountains cast long shadows.

“황강 물 굴불굴불 황강 옥이와 귀엣말 즐겁습니다/황강 모래 엄지 검지 발가락 새 물꽃 되어 흐르듯이/간지러운 옛말이 들리는 봄/재첩 볼우물이 고운 옥이 마을/이모와 고모가 한 동기를 이루며 늙어간 버들골로/물안개는 디딜 데 없이 아득하였습니다/호르르르 물잠자리 홀로 물수제비 띄우고…” ― (<황강9> 가운데) 구불구불 흐르는 고운 모래밭, 그 모래밭에서 이모와 고모가 어울려 놀며 살며 늙어가는 풍경. 황강은 합천 사람들의 삶을 고스란히 안고 오늘도 흐르고 있다. 실제로 황강을 따라가다 보면 합천 사람들이 사는 모습을 눈에 담을 수 있다.

The Hwanggang River Leports Park sits on the opposite side of the river. Crossing Namjeong Bridge takes you to the park, which is also home to a campground. A few tents are pitched on top of the broad expanse of sand. Children run around, dipping their feet in the water. It’s clear to see that the Hwanggang River remains central to the lives of Hapcheon’s people. Now that I’ve come this far, I decide to continue on to the third and fourth sections. Near Hatdeul Eco Park, peonies bloom in spring, while in autumn, the buckwheat flowers there are as white as fallen snow. In the fourth section is a set of stepping stones that cross the waterway. This course runs from Galmasan Mountain back to the Hwanggang River Leports Park and the People’s Recreational Sports Park. The literal translation of Galmasan is “thirsty horse mountain,” and the mountain does look a bit like a parched steed lowering its neck for a deep drink of water.

핫들생태공원을 지나는 3구간도 꼭 걸어보라고 권하고 싶다. 봄이면 작약이 만개하고 가을이면 메밀꽃이 눈이 내린 듯 하얗게 핀다. 4구간은 수변 산책로 징검다리가 하이라이트다. 갈마산~황강레포츠공원~군민생활체육공원으로 이어지는 코스인데, 갈마산은 ‘목마른 말이 물을 먹는 모습’과 닮았다고 해 이름 붙었다. 여기는 다시 함벽루다. 누각 기둥에 등을 기대어 앉아 황강의 풍경을 바라보고 있다. 먼 산 너머 뭉게구름이 어떤 부질없는 생각처럼, 헛된 물음처럼 피어오르고 있다. 걷다 보면, 걸으며 이런저런 풍경을 만나다 보면 사는 게 참 별것 아니라는 생각이 든다. 거창한 목표나 원대한 꿈을 이루는 것도 좋지만 강가에서 물놀이를 하고 누각 기둥에 기대어 앉아 강바람에 실어 보내면 그만일 이야기를 하며 시간을 보내는 것, 어쩌면 그게 인생의 전부일지도 모른다. 어떤 걱정은 절대로 해결할 수 없고, 어떤 절망과 슬픔은 절대로 극복할 수 없어서 그냥 흘려보내는 수밖에 없는데, 그래서 우리는 가끔 강물 앞에 서서 강의 끝, 멀리서 위로처럼 다가오는 노을을 우두커니 바라보는 것이다.

At the end of the day, after all my wanderings, I find myself back at Hambyeongnu Pavilion. I sit down against a pillar and drink in the scenery of the Hwanggang River. The cumulus clouds over the distant mountains hang like an idle thought or a futile question. While recollecting the day’s sights, the notion occurs to me that living is really nothing special at all. It would be nice to achieve a lofty goal or grandiose dream, but simply playing in the water of the river or sitting against a pillar and feeling the river breeze is simply divine, and perhaps that’s all life is really about. Some worries can never be solved and some types of despair and sadness can never be overcome, so all you can do is let them pass. That’s why we sometimes stand next to a lazy, peaceful river like the Hwanggang and absentmindedly gaze at the sunset as it washes over us like a wave of comfort.

The six stadiums used during the Olympics currently host various sports events and musical performances. Lotte World Tower, the world’s fifth tallest building, rises above Jamsil. Its base includes Avenuel and Lotte Duty Free mall. Together, they house luxury stores, Lotte Cinema (with a screen that’s 34m wide) and the five-star hotel Signiel Seoul. The top part of Lotte World Tower is home to Seoul Sky, where you can stand on the Sky Deck, a glass observation deck on the 118^th floor. On clear days, you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the entire metropolitan area. The tower also features Korea’s only double-deck elevator, which ascends at a rate of 10m per second. 부산현대미술관 Museum of Contemporary Art Busan

철새들의 낙원 을숙도에 위치한 부산현대미술관은 자연, 뉴미디어, 인간을 주제로 한 동시대 미술을 중점적으로 다룬다. 1층 오픈 갤러리는 토비아스 레베르거의 작품으로 꾸며진 공간인 동시에 누구나 편하게 쉬어갈 수 있는 카페다. 아카이브를 수집, 보관, 관리하는 ‘모카이브’, 을숙도의 갈대숲을 모티브로 만든 어린이 독서 공간 ‘책그림섬’ 등 이색적인 내부 역시 인상적이다.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (MoCA Busan) is perched on Eulsukdo Island, a stopping-off point for migratory birds. The museum’s collection of contemporary art is grouped under the themes of nature, new media and humanity. The open gallery on the ground floor is decorated with artwork by Tobias Rehberger and doubles as a café open to the public. Other highlights include the archival space MoCArchive and the children’s reading space Kid’s Book Island.

Bookstores in Seoul no longer just sell books — they now offer visitors a lifestyle.

일본에서 1000여 곳의 쓰타야 매장을 운영하는 컬처 컨비니언스 클럽(CCC)의 사장 겸 최고 경영자 마스다 무네아키.
그는 <지적 자본론>에서 소비사회의 변화를 ‘고객 가치’의 관점에서 3단계로 나눴다. 먼저 ‘퍼스트 스테이지’는 물건이 부족한 시대. 어떤 상품이든 용도만 충족하면 팔 수 있다. 하지만 상품이 넘쳐나는 ‘세컨드 스테이지’가 되면 상품을 선택하기 위한 장소, 즉 ‘플랫폼’이 필요하다. 효과적인 플랫폼을 제공할 수 있어야 높은 고객 가치를 창출할 수 있는 시대다. 그리고 현재, 우리는 플랫폼이 넘쳐나는 ‘서드 스테이지’에 살고 있다. 마스다 무네아키는 이 시대에 필요한 것은 ‘제안 능력’이라고 강조한다. 각각의 고객에게 높은 가치를 부여할 수 있는 상품을 찾아주고, 선택해주고, 제안해주는 능력. 서점은 서적 자체가 아니라 서적 안의 라이프스타일을 파는 곳이라고 말이다.

Muneaki Masuda is the president and CEO of the Culture Convenience Club (CCC), which operates over 1,000 Tsutaya stores in Japan. In his book The Intellectual Capital, he writes about changes in consumer society, identifying three distinct stages. The first stage is one of scarcity. At this stage, any product can be sold as long as it meets its purpose. However, once there is an abundance of products, what people need is a platform — a place where they can choose a product. This, the second stage, is an era in which high customer satisfaction can be arrived at only when effective platforms are provided. We now live in the third stage, which goes beyond the platform. Masuda emphasizes that what is needed now is the skill of recommending appropriate products, in other words, the ability to find, select and offer high-value products to customers. The bookstore transforms from being a place where books are sold into a place where a lifestyle is sold.

큐레이션 서점 시대 상품과 플랫폼이 넘쳐나는 시대에 큐레이션은 옵션이 아니라 필수다. 서점은 사양산업으로 전락했지만, 독립 서점은 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 바야흐로 큐레이션 서점의 시대. 매달 하나의 키워드로 단 한 권의 책을 조명하는 ‘한권의 서점’, 시인이 운영하는 시집 전문 서점 ‘위트 앤 시니컬’, 계절마다 하나의 주제로 독서 산책을 안내하는 ‘어쩌다 산책’ 등은 깊고 내밀한 제안으로 사람들을 이끄는 공간이다.

The Era of Curated Bookstores In an era of many options, curation is no longer a choice for business owners. Rather, it is a necessity. While the total number of physical bookstores has been declining, the number of independent bookstores has been steadily increasing. These spaces draw people in with quality recommendations and events. Some examples include One Book, which illuminates a single book every month; Wit N Cynical, a poet-run bookshop; and Uhjjuhdah Promenade, which offers thematic guided walks each season centered around a single book. All are located in Jongno-gu District, Seoul.

책방, 살롱이 되다 19세기 카페가 그러했듯, 책과 술이 있는 21세기 책방들이 살롱 문화를 이끌고 있다. 서울 합정동 ‘문학살롱 초고’만 봐도 그렇다. ‘읽고 쓰는 사람들을 위한 아지트’인 이곳은 소규모 인원만을 위한 ‘스피크이지’ 낭독회, 글쓰기 워크숍 ‘초고살롱’ 등 다양한 프로그램을 진행한다. 시그니처 음료는 알베르 카뮈의 <이방인>, 오은의 <우리는 분위기를 사랑해> 등 문학작품을 모티브로 만든 동명의 칵테일이다. 술을 주문하면 해당 책을 함께 제공한다.

Spaces for Literary Discussions Like the 19^th century cafés frequented by intellectuals, 21^st century bookstores are fueling the rise of literary salon culture with books and alcohol. Salon de Chogo, in the Hapjeong-dong area of Seoul, is a prime example. A café during the day, Salon de Chogo transforms into a hideout for those who like to read and write in the evenings, hosting various live readings and book talks.

덕후들의 라운지 지난 4월 이태원에 문을 연 ‘그래픽’은 서울에서 꼭 가봐야 할 곳으로 급부상한 독립 서점이다. 만화책과 그래픽노블 덕후이자 애주가인 대표는 쓰타야를 사업 모델로 마니아들이 조용히 찾아와 술을 마시며 책을 볼 수 있는 공간을 만들었다.

Fan Lounge Opened in Itaewon in April, Graphic is an independent bookstore that became an instant must-see spot in Seoul. The CEO, a lover of comic books and graphic novels, used Tsutaya as a model to create a space where enthusiasts can come to sip beverages and read.

1만 5000원이란 입장료에도 불구하고 오픈런 현상까지 일어난 이유는 ‘경리단 구겐하임’이라 불리는 건물의 외관과 위스키 바가 있는 호텔식 라운지 때문만은 아니다. 이곳에선 1층부터 3층까지 연결된 서가에 비치된 모든 서적을 펼쳐 볼 수 있다. 500권 이상의 그래픽노블과 명작 만화책들은 물론 평균 10만~20만 원대의 타셴 아트북 100여 종까지 모두.
“여긴 정말 ‘팬’을 위한 공간이에요.” 등산 마니아인 김륜현 매니저는 ‘그래픽 걸작선’ 중 한 권인 <신들의 봉우리>를 추천해주었다. “읽다 보면 실제로 산에 오르는 것처럼 힘이 들어요. 그만큼 생동감이 넘치죠.” 덕후가 아니라고 해서 실망할 필요는 없다. 라이프스타일 ‘입문’ 서적도 많다. 마니아는 취향을 더 깊이 파고, 취향 유목민은 인생 취향을 발견하는 곳. 그래픽이 꿈꾸는 공간이다.

The explosive popularity of the store, despite the admission fee of $12, is not just due to the unique exterior of the building and the hotel-style lounge with a whiskey bar. The interior, in which the carefully curated collection of books is artfully displayed over all three floors, is also a factor. It’s a place where fans can dig into their passions and others can discover theirs. More than 500 graphic novels and comic book masterpieces, as well as 100 Taschen art books, are on display.

오감 자극 스튜디오 최근 롯데 영플라자 명동점 1층에 오픈한 ‘커넥티드 플래그십 스토어’는 독립 서점과 LP점, 갤러리와 로스팅 카페가 어우러진 체험형 복합문화공간이다. ‘커넥티드’는 뉴욕의 아트 갤러리와 서울의 독립 서점으로 시작해 창작자와 독자, 책방을 ‘연결’하는 것을 목표로 확장 중인 플랫폼. 세운상가, 을지로, 홍대 부근에서 독립 서점을 운영하며 쌓은 노하우로 서적 큐레이션은 물론 독립 출판 무료 상담소도 열고 있다. 이곳을 찾은 사람 누구나 글을 쓰고 책을 제작해 사람들과 소통할 수 있도록 돕는 일을 한다. 작은 북 페어 ‘커넥티드 스몰마켓’, 취향 구독 서비스 ‘테이스티 박스’ 등도 열고 있다. 지난해 지역 대표 독립 서점 ‘한양문고’와 함께 ‘다락별장’을 선보인 일산점의 MZ세대 매출이 38% 증가했다. 롯데백화점은 앞으로도 리테일 테라피(쇼핑을 통해 소비자에게 힐링을 제공한다)에 주력할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

A Space to Stimulate the Senses The Kenektid Flagship Store, which recently opened in the Myeong-dong neighborhood branch of the Lotte Young Plaza department store, is an experiential cultural space that comprises an independent bookstore, record store, art gallery and café. Kenektid started as an art gallery in New York and an independent bookstore in Seoul, and it’s expanding with the aim of serving as a platform to connect creators, readers and bookstores. Kenektid offers a curated book selection, free counseling for aspiring independent publishers and a space for writers and readers to connect.

고요한 안식처 양재천 주택가에 자리한 도심 속 예배당. 개점 4주년을 앞둔 ‘믿음문고’는 ‘믿음과 사랑’을 주제로 인문학, 심리학, 철학 서적 등을 큐레이션하는 서점이자 출판사다. 유리문을 열고 아치형 공간에 들어서면 번잡한 바깥 세계와는 잠시 단절된 듯 아늑함이 느껴진다. 온기를 더하는 건 한쪽 벽면에 가득 꽂혀 있는 고객 카드. 컴퓨터프로그램으로 손쉽게 할 수도 있지만, 자신의 이름 아래 구매한 날짜와 책 이름이 적혀 있는 종이카드에 향수를 느끼는 사람들이 적지 않다. 향초와 향수, 비누 등을 구매할 수 있는 공간의 향기는 주민들이 이곳을 산책 코스에 포함시키는 이유로 충분하다. 책방을 방문한 날, 나는 벼르고 있던 버지니아 울프 엽서 북과 함께 <마인드그라프> 1호를 구매했다. 이누리 대표의 크리에이티브 집단 에펠펠 스튜디오에서 마음 건강을 위해 만든 셀프케어 플랫폼 ‘마인드그라프’의 첫 번째 프로젝트 매거진으로, 주제는 ‘곁(beside)’이다.

A Haven of Tranquility Located in a cozy chapel in the affluent residential area next to Yangjaecheon Stream, in southern Seoul, FFL (Faith for Love) Books is a bookstore and publisher that offers a carefully selected collection of humanities, psychology and philosophy books relating to the themes of faith and love. When visitors open the glass door and enter the arched space, they can feel a sense of coziness as well as a feeling of being temporarily cut off from the outside world. A wall filled with customer review cards adds to this feeling of warmth. In addition, the fragrances of the scented candles, perfumes and soaps that are also sold here provide ample reason for local residents to stop by when they take casual walks around their neighborhood.

푸에르토리코를 즐기는 방법

1. 올드 산후안 답사

미국령 푸에르토리코의 수도인 산후안의 역사는 500년을 거슬러 올라간다. 고대 성벽으로 둘러싸인 7개 구역으로 이루어진 올드 산후안(비에호 산후안)을 걷다 보면 마치 시간 여행을 하는 듯한 느낌이 든다. 좁은 자갈 골목길과 화려하고 개성 넘치는 식민지풍 건물이 만들어내는 아름다운 풍경과 축제 같은 분위기를 즐겨보자. 또 이 길에서 피나콜라다가 유래되었으니 한잔 마셔볼 것을 추천한다.

2. 크래시보트 해변에서의 일광욕

푸에르토리코 본섬은 430km가 넘는 해안선을 가지고 있다. 마치 엽서 사진에서 빠져나온 듯이 아름답거나, 일광욕을 즐기기 좋은 해변이 즐비한 이유다. 그중에서도 섬 북서쪽에 위치한 아과디야의 크래시보트 해변(배가 부두에 충돌한 후 붙여진 이름이다)은 해양생물이 가득한 맑은 물과 고운 황금 모래로 여행객의 발길이 끊이지 않는다. 스노클링, 수영, 서핑을 하며 시간을 보내기에 좋은 곳으로, 주변으로는 신선한 해산물과 시원한 음료수를 제공하는 다양한 바와 레스토랑이 즐비하다.

3. 엘윤케 하이킹

2. Frolic on Crash Boat Beach

With over 430km of shoreline, Puerto Rico has no shortage of postcard-worthy beaches. But Crash Boat Beach (yes, it got its name after a boat crashed into a pier), located in the northwest of the island, in Aguadilla, attracts a steady stream of travelers with its clear waters full of marine life and powdery golden sand. Snorkeling, swimming and surfing are favorite pastimes here.

3. Hike El Yunque

Put on your trekking shoes and hit the trails of El Yunque National Forest, located in the Sierra de Luquillo mountains, in the eastern part of the island. Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the park’s untamed beauty — hundreds of unique animal and plant species live here.

4. 카스티요 산펠리페 델 모로 방문

5. 쿨레브라섬 방문

본섬을 나와 동쪽으로 약 30km 정도 항해하다 보면 인기 있는 해변이 많은 쿨레브라섬이 나온다. 한적한 만에 위치한 플라멩코 해변도 그중 하나로, 카리브해의 수정같이 맑은 물과 하얀 모래사장이 펼쳐져 있다. 이 해변에서 가장 유명한 건 묘하게도 버려진 탱크다. 한때 미 해군 소유였으나 지금은 유기된 채 모래 속에 파묻혀 있다. 섬 주변의 청정 해역은 산호와 해양생물로 가득 차 있다.

4. Visit El Morro

This unmissable landmark, also known as Castillo San Felipe del Morro, took centuries to complete and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by Spanish conquistadors to protect the city of San Juan, which was once a Spanish colony, its impressive architecture is reminiscent of ancient European fortresses.

5. Visit Culebra

Leave the main island and sail about 30km east to Culebra, one of Puerto Rico’s most popular — and scenic — islands. Culebra is home to an impressive number of gorgeous beaches, such as Flamenco Beach, a remote stretch of white sand washed by the crystalline waters of the Caribbean. Oddly enough, the beach’s most notorious attraction is an abandoned tank stuck in the sand that belonged to the U.S. Navy.

6. 아과디야 마을 촬영

플랑크톤의 일종인 야광충이 생물발광으로 눈부시게 빛나는 바다는 자연에 대한 경외심을 불러일으키곤 한다. 푸에르토리코에는 3곳의 만에서 야광 바다를 볼 수 있다. 모스키토만은 세계에서 가장 밝은 야광 바다로 꼭 가봐야 할 곳이다. 비에케스섬에 위치하며 페리로 쉽게 찾아갈 수 있다.

Puerto Rico is full of colorful sights, and we mean that quite literally. For proof, head to the beach town of Aguadilla, where a hillside neighborhood serves as an open-air gallery. Its houses are painted in mosaic-like patterns, while the stairs have gotten a rainbow-inspired makeover. Walk around laid-back Aguadilla, and you’ll discover more vibrant-hued murals, often depicting life on the island.

7. Explore Bioluminescent Bays

One of nature’s most awe-inspiring phenomena is bioluminescent bays, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them. Mosquito Bay, on the island of Vieques — easily reached by ferry — is a must-see as it was declared the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Once the sun sets, rent kayaks and head out in the glowing waters, illuminated by millions of dinoflagellates, a type of plankton.

Freiburg, a small city in southwestern Germany, attracts travelers from all over the world with its brilliant history, unique culture and beautiful nature.

초고속열차 ICE가 프랑크푸르트를 떠난 지 1시간쯤 되었을까. 창밖으로 빽빽한 침엽수림이 끝없이 펼쳐진다. 독일어로 ‘검은 숲’이라는 이름의 슈바르츠발트, 독일 남서부 바덴뷔르템베르크주를 길이 160km, 너비 최대 50km가량 뒤덮고 있는 숲과 산악 지대다. 햇빛이 스며들 틈도 없이 나무가 울창해 검은 숲으로 불린다지만, 그 속살을 파고들면 하늘이 환히 열려 있는 태양의 골짜기가 나타난다. 그곳은 바로 열차의 목적지인 프라이부르크다.

프라이부르크가 지닌 타이틀은 여행자의 마음을 설레게 한다. 먼저 최남단에 위치해 독일에서 가장 햇빛이 풍부한 도시라는 것. 반짝이는 햇살은 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게 한다. 향긋한 꽃을 피우고 달콤한 열매를 맺게 하며 몸과 마음을 건강하게 해준다. 검은 숲을 품은 프라이부르크는 동쪽으로는 프랑스, 남쪽으로는 스위스를 연결하는 관문도시이기도 하다. 경이로운 자연과 다채로운 문화까지 경험할 수 있으니 금상첨화다. 독일의 환경 수도로서 큰 몫을 하고 있다는 점 또한 매력적이다. 여행을 통해 지속가능한 일상을 공유하는 것이야말로 요즘의 화두이니까.

최근 <론리 플래닛>이 여기에 한 가지 타이틀을 덧붙였다. ‘부러울 정도로 높은 삶의 질’을 꼽으며 프라이부르크를 2022년 여행해야 할 최고의 도시 중 하나로 선정한 것이다. “프라이부르크는 인구 23만 명의 작은 도시예요. 베를린, 뮌헨처럼 화려한 도시적 재미도 없고 제2차세계대전 당시 80% 정도 파괴되었던 탓에 근교의 프랑스 소도시와 같은 고풍스러움도 기대할 수 없죠.” 프라이부르크 출신 아트디렉터 아네 조이베르트가 말했다. 그녀는 프라이부르크가 복잡한 대도시의 삶에 지친 나를 위로할 수 있는 곳이라고 귀띔했다. “프라이부르크의 흔한 하루하루를 오롯이 만끽해보세요. 화창한 날씨, 여유롭게 흐르는 시간, 자연과의 교감, 영혼을 채우는 맛있는 음식과 함께요.”

The name Freiburg sets the traveler’s heart aflutter. Located in the southernmost part of the country, Freiburg is Germany’s sunniest city. The glittering sunshine enriches the lives of locals and visitors alike. It coaxes fragrant flowers into bloom, produces sweet fruit and keeps both body and mind healthy. Freiburg is a gateway city that connects the Black Forest with France to the east and Switzerland to the south. But the city’s gorgeous nature and rich culture are just icing on the proverbial cake. Freiburg’s role as Germany’s environmental capital is another factor that adds to the attraction.

Lonely Planet recently selected Freiburg as one of the best cities to visit in 2022, citing the “enviably high quality of life.”

“Freiburg is a small city with a population of 230,000.” says Anne Seubert, an art director from Freiburg. “You can’t expect it to be as colorful as Berlin and Munich, or to have the antique charm of the French towns in the suburbs, because about 80% of the city was destroyed during World War II.”

She maintains that Freiburg is a place to seek comfort when life in the big city becomes exhausting.

“I recommend enjoying some ordinary days in Freiburg, taking advantage of the sunny weather, relaxing, communing with nature and eating delicious food,” she adds.

찬란한 역사를 따라, 구시가 탐험

중앙역에서 여행의 중심이 되는 구시가까지는 고작 10분 정도 거리다. 구시가에 들어서자 가장 먼저 눈에 띈 것은 거리를 따라 졸졸 흐르는 수로 ‘베힐레’다. 베힐레는 상수와 소방용수를 공급하기 위해 12세기에 처음 도입된 인공 수로다. 현대적인 시스템을 갖춘 후엔 필요가 없어졌지만, 옛것을 허투루 버리지 않는 시민들은 이를 예쁘게 꾸며 도시의 명물로 남겨놓았다. 덕분에 베힐레는 시민들의 놀이터가 되었을 뿐만 아니라 무더운 날엔 도시 전체의 온도를 낮추는 역할까지 한다. 앙증맞은 실개천을 따라가다 보면 어느덧 붉은색 구 시청사와 함께 유럽 건축사를 망라하는 시대적 건축물들이 등장한다. 그중에서도 가장 빼어난 것은 프라이부르크의 랜드마크인 대성당이다. 짓는 데만 300년 넘게 걸렸다는 고딕양식의 대성당은 붉은 사암의 매혹적인 빛깔, 정문이며 기둥, 첨탑을 장식하는 화려한 조각 예술, 성스러운 빛의 하모니를 선사하는 스테인드글라스가 감탄을 연발케 한다. 특히 116m 높이의 첨탑은 종종 ‘지구상에서 가장 아름다운 첨탑’으로 소개된다. 맞은편에서 눈길을 사로잡는 또 하나의 건축물은 상인회관이다. 16세기 초에 지어진 웅장한 르네상스양식의 건물에 ‘황제의 연회실’, ‘로코코 룸’ 등 호화로운 실내까지, 중세시대 교역의 중심지로 번영했던 프라이부르크의 위세를 방증하는 듯하다.

무역을 위해 수많은 상인과 여행자들이 드나들었을 테니 이를 관리하고 보호하는 안전장치가 필요했을 것이다. 과거에 있었던 성벽과 아직 남아 있는 슈바벤 문, 마르틴 문은 모두 13세기에 지어진 것으로 도시의 출입구 역할을 했다. 그중 네 귀퉁이에 첨탑을 올려 더욱 아름다운 마르틴 문 아래엔 맥도날드가 자리한다. 구석구석에서 과거와 현재가 사이좋게 공존하는 구시가의 모습이 흥미롭다.

Explore the Brilliant History of the Old Town

It is only about 10 minutes from Central Station to our destination in Old Town. What first catch my eye when I enter the Old Town are the Bächle, waterways that flow along the streets. The Bächle are artificial waterways first introduced in the 12^th century to supply water and put out fires. They stopped being necessary after a modern system was installed, but the city’s residents didn’t want to remove them. Thus, they’ve been maintained as a beautiful decorative installation. The Bächle have not only become playgrounds for the city’s residents; they also help lower the temperature of the entire city on hot days.

Along these dainty streams are buildings that showcase European architectural history. The most outstanding of these buildings is the landmark Freiburger Münster (Freiburg Cathedral). This Gothic structure, which took more than 300 years to build, is made of red sandstone, hence its bewitching color. The splendid sculptural art of the main gate, the spire and the stained glass create a harmony of holy light that induces a sense of awe in all who see it.

With so many rich merchants and travelers frequenting Freiburg in days past, the city needed protection. Of the fortifications built for defense, Schwabentor and Martinstor, which were both built in the 13^th century to serve as gates to the city, still remain.

맛있는 골목 산책

태양의 도시란 타이틀을 가질 만큼 온화한 기후와 양질의 토양, 풍요로운 자연환경을 지닌 프라이부르크는 독일에서 미식을 즐길 수 있는 대표 도시 중 하나로 손꼽힌다. 이 사실을 확인하려면 이른 아침에 대성당 앞 뮌스터마르크트로 향할 것. 평일 오전이면 이곳엔 언제나 활기가 넘친다. 근교 농가와 목장에서 가져온 싱싱한 채소와 과일, 고기, 햄과 치즈 등 지역 먹거리로 가득한 장이 서기 때문이다. 보통 시내의 광장에서 열리는 야외 시장은 일주일에 한두 번 서기 마련인데, 프라이부르크의 뮌스터마르크트는 일요일만 빼고 매일같이 열린다. 주민들은 갓 수확한 산지 직송의 제철 식재료들을 그때그때 구할 수 있는 특권을 누린다. 프라이부르크가 미식가를 위한 도시가 될 수밖에 없는 이유다.

뮌스터마르크트에서 꼭 맛봐야 할 별미가 있다. 바로 길고 빨갛다는 뜻을 지닌 ‘랑게 로테’ 소시지다. 1949년, 제2차세계대전 후 탄생한 유서 깊은 음식으로, 무려 35cm에 달하는 얇고 길쭉한 소시지를 지글지글 구워 그대로 혹은 반으로 접어 빵에 끼운 후 겨자를 올려 먹는다. 시장 곳곳 7개나 되는 가판대에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있다.

전통 실내 시장 마르크트할레, 라일락을 드리운 콘픽트 거리 등 골목골목마다 솜씨 좋은 레스토랑과 바, 카페 등이 늘어서 있다. 독일식 피자로 불리는 플람쿠헨, 유럽에서 가장 많이 팔린다는 블랙 포레스트 햄, 튀기거나 훈제한 송어 요리, 6월까지 맛볼 수 있는 화이트 아스파라거스까지, 프라이부르크에선 아낌없이 먹고, 마시고, 산책하면 된다.

A Walk Down a Delicious Alley

A walk through Old Town is even more wonderful when it involves tasty food. Nicknamed City of the Sun, Freiburg is considered one of the best German cities for gourmet fare thanks to its mild climate and high-quality soil. Early in the morning, we head to Münstermarkt, in front of the cathedral. Weekday mornings are always lively here. This is because the market is filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, meats and cheeses brought in from nearby suburban farms and ranches. The outdoor farmer’s market is usually held in the square downtown once or twice a week, while Freiburg’s Münstermarkt is open every day except Sundays. Residents have the privilege of obtaining fresh, seasonal ingredients delivered immediately after harvest. This is why Freiburg has become a destination for gourmands.

One of Münstermarkt’s famous delicacies is a sausage dish called Die Lange Rote, which means “long and red.” This historic menu item emerged in 1949, not long after the end of World War II. It is a thin, 35cm-long sausage that’s grilled, folded in half or left as is, placed in a baguette and eaten with mustard. The dish can be found at seven stands throughout the market.

Restaurants, bars and cafés line the alleys of the traditional indoor market Markthalle and the lilac-heavy Konvikt Street. As you walk the streets of Freiburg, you can drink to your heart’s content and eat dishes like flammkuchen (also known as German pizza); the best-selling Black Forest ham; fried or smoked trout dishes; and white asparagus, which grows until June.

프라이부르크는 와인으로도 명성이 높다. 독일에서 가장 큰 와인 산지를 품은 도시로 시 자체는 물론이고 대학교조차 와이너리를 가지고 있을 정도다. 독일 와인 하면 화이트와인, 그중에서도 리슬링을 떠올릴 테지만 독일에서 가장 따뜻한 도시가 자랑하는 와인은 좀 다르다. 쇼이레베, 게뷔르츠트라미너, 뮐러 투르가우 등 부드럽고 향긋한 화이트와인과 피노 누아, 도른펠더 등 진한 과실 향의 레드와인을 내세운다.

구시가의 레스토랑이나 와인 바를 찾을 수도 있지만, 와이너리를 직접 찾아 생산자를 만나고 그가 만든 와인을 맛보는 건 더 큰 감동을 준다. 가장 유명한 와인 산지는 도심에서 15~20km 거리에 있는 투니베르크와 카이제르슈툴이다. 프라이부르크가 속한 바덴 지방 전체 와인 생산량의 3분의 1을 차지하는 곳으로 100여 개의 와이너리가 산재해 있다. 이곳이 세계적인 와인 산지로 인정받는 이유를 닥터 헤거 와이너리로 향하는 길에 확인할 수 있다. 눈부신 햇살, 오래전 화산이 만들어낸 언덕과 구불구불 끝도 없이 이어지는 가파른 경사의 포도밭 풍경에 탄성이 절로 나온다. 카이제르슈툴에서도 가장 좋은 포도밭을 가졌다는 닥터 헤거 와이너리는 세계의 각종 와인 및 미식 관련 미디어, 품평회 등에서 바덴 와인의 자존심을 드높이고 있다. 특히 매 빈티지마다 높은 점수를 받는 피노 누아는 꼭 맛보길 권한다. 시음 및 제품 구매를 할 수 있는 비노테크가 마련되어 있으므로 사전 예약을 통해 와인 테이스팅 프로그램을 신청하면 된다.

The Home of Wine

Freiburg is also famous for its wine. It is the largest wine producing city in Germany, and even the universities here have wineries. When you think of German wine, you may think of white wine, especially Riesling, but the wine of Germany’s warmest city is a little different.

Freiburg boasts soft and fragrant white wines such as Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau, not to mention deep, fruity red wines such as pinot noir and Dornfelder.

The most famous wine producing areas, Tuniberg and Kaiserstuhl, are just 15 to 20km from the city center. Freiburg accounts for one-third of the total wine production in the Baden region, with around 100 wineries. The city is recognized as a world-class wine producer thanks largely to the winery Weingut Dr. Heger. You can take in the incredible scenery for yourself on your way there. The dazzling sun shines on hills created ages ago by a volcano, and the steep vineyards stretch far into the distance. Weingut Dr. Heger, which has the best vineyards in the Kaiserstuhl range of hills, has increased Baden’s profile in numerous wine and gourmet food exhibitions and throughout the world. Its pinot noir scores particularly high for each vintage. Tastings can be arranged through the winery’s official website.

언덕길 따라 하이킹, 강물 따라 바이킹

지도를 살펴보면 알겠지만, 프라이부르크는 거대한 숲에 둘러싸인 도시다. 자연을 탐험하는 것은 프라이부르크 여행에서 빼놓을 수 없는 필수 코스다. 구시가에서 북동쪽으로 한 발짝만 벗어나면 프라이부르크시립공원이 있다. 널따란 잔디밭부터 250종류의 장미가 한데 모인 장미 정원, 작은 연못과 카페, 이를 고루 둘러볼 수 있는 산책로까지 정성 들여 가꾼 공원이다. 여기서 ‘프라이부르크의 지붕’이라 불리는 슐로스베르크로 자연스레 하이킹을 떠날 수 있다. 정상인 카노넨플라츠까지 각각 케이블카와 등산로가 마련되어 있는데, 오랜 세월을 가늠할 수 있는 웅장한 나무, 귓가를 간질이는 풀벌레 소리, 바람이 스칠 때마다 은은히 퍼지는 꽃 향기 등 자연의 내밀한 속내를 살펴보고 싶다면 등산로를 선택한다. 딴청을 부리며 느긋이 걸어도 30분. 안개가 살포시 내려앉는 이른 아침에 찾아도 좋지만 가능하면 하루의 여정을 마치기 직전 해 질 녘을 추천한다. 주황색에서 빨간색 그리고 보라색으로 물드는 저녁 하늘, 그 아래 하나둘 불빛을 반짝이는 유서 깊은 구시가의 파노라마가 펼쳐진다.

숲에 생명을 주는 것은 물이다. 드라이잠은 프라이부르크를 가로지르는 29km 길이의 강이다. 여름이 오면 많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾아 더위를 피하고 피크닉을 즐긴다. 이곳은 자전거 여행의 묘미를 만끽하게 해주는 곳이기도 하다. 중앙역 옆에 위치한 자전거 정류장에서 자전거를 빌려 서쪽 혹은 동쪽으로 달려보자. 자전거 길을 따라 페달을 밟으면 쿵쾅대는 심장과 함께 온몸의 감각이 되살아나는 것을 느낄 수 있다.

Hiking Up the Hill, Biking Along the River

It’s clear from looking at a map that Freiburg is a city surrounded by a huge forest. Don’t miss the chance to explore the city’s natural landscape when you visit. Just a step northeast of Old Town is the Freiburg Municipal Park, Stadtgarten Freiburg. This is a carefully cultivated garden featuring a wide lawn, a rose garden boasting 250 kinds of roses, a small pond, a café and a promenade from which to view the park. You can easily hike from this park over to Schlossberg (456m), which is called the “roof of Freiburg.” Here, there are cable cars and hiking trails up to Kanonenplatz, the summit.

Water enriches any forest. Dreisam is a 29km-long river that crosses Freiburg. When summer comes, so do the visitors, who picnic along the shore and go for a swim to escape the summer heat. Dreisam also has a bicycle path. You can rent a bicycle at the bicycle stop next to Central Station and head out eastward or westward on a heartpounding adventure.

지속가능한 동네, 보방

독일은 물론 세계의 환경 수도로 불리는 프라이부르크. 구시가에서 남서쪽으로 약 3km 거리에 위치한 보방은 그 진면목을 확인할 수 있는 동네다. 보방은 ‘지속가능성의 모범 지역’, ‘탄소 중립 마을’ 등으로 불린다. 과거 이곳은 독일이 제2차세계대전에서 패한 후 프랑스군이 주둔하던 지역이었는데 통일 후 프랑스군이 철수하자 친환경 에너지 마을로 변모했다. 놀라운 사실은 이를 주도한 것이 프라이부르크 시민들이었다는 것. ‘보방시민자치조합’을 결성해 자발적으로 아이디어를 내고 적극적인 운동을 이끌어 현재 전 세계 여행자들이 친환경적인 삶을 엿보고자 꼭 들르는 동네로 거듭났다.

38만m² 면적에 인구 5600여 명이 사는 보방을 여행하는 방법은 아주 간단하다. 자동차 출입이 금지된 마을이니 트램 혹은 자전거를 타고 움직일 것. 건축을 통해 에너지 소비를 줄이는 패시브 하우스, 여기에 태양광 설비를 부착해 자체 에너지를 생산하는 플러스 에너지 빌딩 ‘선십’과 ‘헬리오트로프’, 재생에너지를 만드는 자체 발전소, 직접 먹거리를 재배하는 커뮤니티 정원 등을 찬찬히 둘러본다. 하룻밤의 여유가 허락된다면 그린 시티 호텔 보방에 머물며 지속가능한 도시에서의 일상을 직접 체험해봐도 좋다.

Vauban, a Sustainable Neighborhood

Freiburg is not just known as the environmental capital of Germany — it has also been called the environmental capital of the world. Located about 3km southwest of the Old Town, Vauban is a neighborhood that shows the true face of the city. The area has been called a “model of sustainability” and “a carbon neutral village.”

It is easy to travel to Vauban, which is 41 hectares in size and has a population of 5,600 people. Since cars are prohibited from entering the area, you will need to get to Vauban by tram or bicycle. A tour through the neighborhood will take you past so-called “passive houses,” which were built using special methods and technologies in order to reduce energy consumption, as well as buildings that actually produce surplus energy through solar panels. Two incredible examples to look out for are the futuristic buildings known as Sunship and Heliotrope.

The Vauban neighborhood also has its own power plant that produces renewable energy, and community gardens where residents grow their own food. If you receive permission to spend the night, you can stay at the Green City Hotel Vauban and experience daily life in a sustainable neighborhood. The property is yet another example of why Freiburg, a city nourished and sustained by the sun, remains such an enviable place to live.

The Black Forest The Black Forest is beloved by Germans and is a popular vacation spot for other Europeans. With a total area of 6000km², it’s hard to know where to start. You may want to focus on the highlands of Hochschwarzwald.

Schauinsland Schauinsland, the third highest mountain in the Black Forest, can easily be reached from Freiburg by bus or tram. The cable car, the Schauinslandbahn, opened in 1930 and takes you all the way up to the summit, 1,284m above sea level.

Colmar There are many pretty cities in Alsace, France, which borders Germany, and Colmar is considered the best of the bunch. The area is filled with wooden 16^th-century houses decorated with colorful flowers. This “little Venice,” which is more colorful than Freiburg, has food that resembles German cuisine but that travelers never doubt is French.

In Bali, Indonesia, beautiful towns are everywhere. But Sanur is special. Lacking any nightlife scene to speak of, but with a healthy dose of culture, this mellow town on the island’s southeast is thriving.

인도네시아 발리 남동쪽 해안에 자리한 사누르는 고요하고 목가적인 해변을 지니고 있다. 북에서 남으로 약 8km에 걸쳐 뻗어 있으며 일출이 아름답고 어느 곳이든 분위기가 편안하다. 발리의 비즈니스 중심지인 덴파사르 동쪽에 위치해, 국제공항에서 30분 내에 도착한다. 케발라 세라믹스의 창업자로 1994년 영국에서 사누르로 이주한 웬디 토마스는 “나는 ‘진정한 발리’라는 표현을 별로 좋아하지 않지만, 사누르가 발리 전통을 간직한 작은 마을이라는 것은 확실하다”고 말한다.

Stretching half a dozen kilometers along Bali’s southeast coast, Sanur is a realm of memorable sunrises, idyllic beaches and quiet streets. Little has changed over the years, but that’s part of the charm of this fishing town, which is on the eastern outskirts of Denpasar, Bali’s capital and business center. Though it’s a longtime hub for expats, authenticity prevails. Kevala Ceramics founder Wendy Thomas, who moved to Sanur from the U.K. in 1994, says, “I don’t really like the phrase ‘the real Bali,’ but you definitely feel that Sanur’s a small little pocket where the culture is very strong.”

There’s always something happening at Mertasari Beach’s Hindu temple, a place of sacred waters. On Sundays travelers can watch children learning the motions in Balinese dance classes at Tandjung Sari Hotel. One of the oldest hotels on the island, it was originally an addition to a private family home.

1960년대부터 1990년대까지 비즈니스는 늘어나고 농경지는 줄어들었지만, 달라진 게 별로 없다. “메인 도로에 거대하고 못생긴 빌딩 같은 건 없어요. 아직 예스러움을 간직하고 있죠.” 그런데 요즘은 마을에 꽤 많은 소규모 갤러리와 부티크, 현지인이 소유한 호텔, 레스토랑과 카페는 물론 리빙 소품을 만드는 참여형 도자기 공방과 스튜디오까지 생겨났다. 10세기 고대 비문을 새긴 산호로 지은 푸라 블란종 사원부터 연을 날리려 해변에 모여든 발리 젊은이들에 이르기까지, 고전적인 것과 새로운 것이 교차한다. 지역 주민들은 관광객들에게 아주 따뜻하다. 그래서인지 이 지역에 디지털 노매드족이 최근 들어 늘고 있다. 사누르의 넓고 평평한 산책로는 발리의 다른 지역에서 보기 힘든 특징 중 하나다. 자전거를 타기에 완벽한 포장도로 덕분에 사누르 주변을 쉽게 돌아볼 수 있다. 토마스는 “해변으로 가기도, 마을로 가기도 편리하죠. 사누르를 ‘마을’이라 부르는 걸 좋아해요”라고 말한다. 야자 잎이 무성하게 우거진 도로, 친절한 사람들 그리고 느긋한 분위기까지. 사누르는 누구에게나 환영받는 진정한 파라다이스다.

That family started the hotel in 1962 and still owns the property. Sanur has more personality than the popular and highly developed beach towns of Seminyak and Canggu, which are bustling with tourists.

Sanur’s evolution has been more subtle. Today, the town has plenty of small galleries and boutiques; many locally owned hotels, restaurants and cafés; and several ceramics workshops and studios, which make some of the island’s finest homewares.

The area is full of ancient influences — consider the architecturally rich Pura Blanjong temple, which was constructed of coral and has inscriptions that date back to the 10^th century. But Sanur also has some convenient modern touches, like flat, paved walking paths that make it perfect for biking.

With its friendly people, laid-back atmosphere and convenient location, Sanur is a welcoming corner of paradise.

끝없이 펼쳐지는 부드러운 황갈색 모래사장을 지닌 곳으로, 발리 내에서도 가장 훌륭한 해변 중 하나로 알려져 있다. 발리 남쪽의 다른 지역에는 서핑할 수 있는 높은 파도를 지닌 바다가 있다면, 사누르에서는 섬 전체를 따라 자리 잡은 산호초 덕분에 조용히 수영과 스노클링을 할 수 있다. 바람이 강할 때는 연을 날리는 카이트서핑도 즐길 수 있다.

Sanur Beach

Sanur is lined with seemingly endless stretches of soft tan sand. Among these, Sanur Beach is one of the most stunning and features several gazebo-like platforms where you can sit to watch the sunrise. An offshore reef with incredibly calm lagoons makes for lovely swimming and snorkeling, though there are surfing waves in the south. When the wind is strong, kitesurfing is popular as well.

유리로 만든 벽과 조경이 아름다운 야외 공간이 함께 어우러진 ‘버드 하우스’는 모래 위에 둥둥 떠 있는 거대한 둥지를 연상시킨다. 인도네시아의 유명 건축회사인 요카 사라가 디자인했으며, 비치 클럽 앞에 펼쳐진 해변에서 일광욕을 즐기고, 클럽 내부에서 선베드, 수영장, 키즈 클럽, 놀이터, 스파, 피트니스 센터 및 요가 공간 등을 이용할 수 있다. 또한 거북이 방류 같은 흥미로운 액티비티도 진행해 다채로운 시간을 보낼 수 있다.

Byrd House Bali

Designed by Indonesia’s Yoka Sara Architects, the new beach club Byrd House Bali subtly mimics a giant nest floating atop walls of glass and features well landscaped outdoor spaces. There is plentiful beach seating right on the soft sand as well as sun beds, a pool, a kids club, a playground, a spa, a fitness center and a yoga barn. From sunrise to well past sunset, there is plenty to entertain a family for days on end, including exciting activities such as turtle releases.

Even if you don’t have a home or business to decorate, a visit to his showroom is guaranteed to inspire thanks to the gallery-like displays of carved, etched and incredibly textured hand-glazed tiles, as well as monumental pieces of decor.

Casual moviegoers are probably most familiar with the Batman who appears in Tim Burton’s films (1989-1995) or in Christopher Nolan’s films (2005-2012). Tim Burton’s Batman is a hero in intense, dark Gothic movies, while Nolan’s films place Batman in the midst of realistic action, characters and settings.

In 2022, Matt Reeves achieved a new milestone in Batman filmography. Reeves’ film humanizes Batman (Robert Pattinson). It falls within the genre of mystery with heavy noir, taking a very sharp turn away from existing Batman “hero movies.” Audiences are sharply divided on the film, while critics say it is the “best embodiment of the charm of the original Batman comics.”

The Batman tells the story of Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) in his second year as Batman. Wayne, who helped Lieutenant Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) as a vigilante, receives a letter from a criminal who identifies himself as “The Riddler” (Paul Dano). Soon after, the Riddler kills a series of influential figures, including prosecutors and police chiefs, while toying with Batman. Batman is more detective than hero, chasing after clues left behind by the Riddler. Instead of showing off the fancy weapons, equipment and superhuman villains in other Batman movies, Reeves focuses on portraying good and evil, writing a Batman who is buffeted about by criminals as he pursues them at his own pace. This is the film to watch if, rather than seeking a complete hero, you are curious about how Bruce Wayne battles with his two conflicting selves to establish his identity and become the real Batman.

This drama is based on anecdotes about former President Dae-jung Kim and his campaign strategist, Chang-rok Um, known as “The Fox on the Election Panel.” The plot centers on pharmacy owner Chang-dae Seo (Sun-kyun Lee), who falls in love with presidential challenger Un-beom Kim (Kyung-gu Seoul). Chang-dae Seo is captivated by Un-beom Kim as he gives a speech about his desire to change the world in the midst of a hotly contested election. Director Sung-hyun Byun focuses more on portraying the chemistry and strong relationship between the two characters instead of the political history of the time the movie was filmed.

Nathan (Tom Holland), lost his brother when they were children and became a petty thief. He accepts treasure hunter Sully’s (Mark Wahlberg) proposal to hunt for a treasure of astronomical value as well as for his missing brother. There are plenty of things to enjoy in this film, including the marvelous action of Tom Holland in his prime, Mark Wahlberg’s skillful performance, and colorful filming locations.

Marvel’s Morbius, is a movie about the origins of an anti-hero who is viewed by the world as a powerful villain. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) is a biochemist who suffers from a rare blood disease. He succeeds in developing a treatment by fusing his DNA with that of bats, but at a terrible cost. Morbius’s surrogate brother Milo (Matt Smith) is seized with jealousy when he learns that Morbius has acquired superhuman abilities due to the bat DNA. He steals the treatment to gain the same power and throws New York into chaos. Jared Leto’s amazing performance, which perfectly captures the animal senses of Morbius, makes the film complete.

<유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭>은 성별, 직업과 상관없이 유치원생부터 할아버지, 할머니까지 다양한 연령대의 사람들이 출연해 저마다의 이야기를 들려주고 퀴즈를 함께 맞히는 예능 프로그램이다. 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 프로그램의 포맷이 실외에서 실내로 조금 달라졌지만 다양한 출연진과 테마를 선보이며 매회 화제를 불러일으키고 있다.
