That’s why the creators of New York’s Central Park were able to overcome the opposition of capitalists in 1853 to win approval for it in the heart of Manhattan. The park allows New Yorkers to appreciate the changing of the seasons. The lake in the park’s center is an autumn attraction painted crimson by the leaves that fall into its embrace. Oslo’s new National Museum of Norway, the largest art museum in the Nordic region, has opened its doors. The building was designed by architects Jan Kleihues and Klaus Schuwerk, who designed the building to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50%. The museum has 400,000 works, including Norwegian painter Edvard Munch’s The Scream, and a space to view its Scandinavian design collection, which includes royal dress and mid-20th-century styles.

Hawaii’s Aloha Festivals will be held from September 10 to 24. The folk festival celebrations have taken place on Oahu Island since 1946, and visitors can enjoy local food, hula performances and royal ceremonies held in traditional Hawaiian garb. The car parade, traditional performances and marching dancers on September 24 are not to be missed. Riders on horseback parade alongside cars decorated with colorful flowers.

오는 10월 1일, 두바이에 미래 도시를 연상케 하는 새로운 랜드마크인 엑스포 시티 두바이가 문을 연다. 2020 두바이 엑스포의 제반 시설 80%를 그대로 활용한 공간으로, 엑스포를 계획하던 단계에서부터 기획됐다. 엑스포 당시 가장 많은 방문객을 기록했던 3곳의 명소, 알 와슬 플라자, 하늘 정원, 물을 활용한 구조물인 워터 피처를 만나볼 수 있으며, 다양한 국가 전시관도 리노베이션되어 방문객을 맞이한다.
The Rebirth of Expo 2020 Dubai, Expo City Dubai
Expo City Dubai, a new landmark reminiscent of a future metropolis, will open in Dubai on October 1. Utilizing 80% of the infrastructure from Expo 2020 Dubai, the project was planned during the early design stages of the Expo. Visitors can check out Al Wasl Plaza, Garden in the Sky and the Surreal water feature, the three most visited attractions from Expo 2020. Starting with the striking, hawk-shaped UAE Pavilion, a number of national pavilions will be renovated. Planned facilities for leisure, food and drink, entertainment and sports, as well as a shopping mall will provide a delightful experience for both visitors and residents alike.

Art as City Hosts Kiaf and Frieze Art Fair
Kiaf Seoul, an art fair which last year recorded the highest number of visitors and highest sales in its history, and the Frieze Art Fair, which is making its Asian debut in Seoul, will be cohosted at the COEX Exhibition Hall this fall. Kiaf Seoul is running from September 3 to 6, while Frieze Seoul will run from September 2 to 5, and visitors can attend both events on a single ticket. Additionally, Kiaf Plus will be held at the Seoul Trade Exhibition and Convention Center (SETEC) from September 2 to 5, where visitors can find innovative galleries that have been open for less than five years. With these events, Seoul can establish itself as an international art hub.

Experience the Tate’s ‘Light’ in Melbourne
The U.K.’s Tate galleries will join hands with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). The Tate’s iconic exhibition, Light: Works from Tate’s Collection, which has been enjoyed by art lovers around the world, has landed at the ACMI. 중세로 떠나는 미식 여행, 쿠치나 박물관
르네상스 시대 사람들은 어떤 파스타를 먹었을까? 역대 교황들이 즐겨 먹던 요리는 뭘까? ‘미식’과 떼어놓을 수 없는 나라, 이탈리아에 그런 궁금증을 해소시켜줄 장소가 생겼다. 로마에 문 연 쿠치나 박물관 얘기다. 셰프이자 에투알 요리학교의 설립자인 로사노 보스콜로가 40여 년 이상 수집한 고서, 앤티크 식기와 조리 도구, 레시피 자료 등을 정리해 선보인다. 15세기부터 현대까지 유럽 음식의 역사를 망라한 이곳의 하이라이트는 120여 권의 옛 조리서가 있는 도서관. 앞으로 관람객을 위한 흥미로운 요리 체험 프로그램도 선보일 예정이다.

The gastronomic museum Garum Biblioteca e Museo Della Cucina in Rome has reopened. In the museum, Rossano Boscolo, a chef and founder of the cooking school Campus Etoile Academy, presents books; antique dishes and cooking utensils; and recipes he has collected for over 40 years. The highlight of the museum, which covers the history of Italian food from the 15th century to the modern era, is a library with over 120 antique recipe books.

바르셀로나의 수호성인 성모마리아를 기리는 종교 축제. 매년 ‘자비의 성모마리아’ 축일인 9월 24일 전후로 펼쳐지는데, 올해는 9월 23일부터 26일까지로 예정돼 있다. 축제 기간 동안 바르셀로나 전역에서 퍼레이드, 프로젝션 쇼, 불꽃놀이, 거리예술축제 등 수백 가지 행사가 펼쳐진다. 대표적인 행사는 밤에 폭죽을 터뜨리며 거리를 질주하는 놀이인 코레폭스와 산트 하우메 광장에서 열리는 인간 탑 쌓기인 카스테예르스이다.
La Mercè is a religious festival in honor of a patron saint of Barcelona, Our Lady of Mercy, held every year around September 24. It takes place this year from September 23 to 26, and hundreds of events will be held throughout Barcelona, including parades, projection shows and firework displays. Some of the highlights include Correfocs, in which participants run through the streets at night with fireworks, and Mercè Castellers, an event where people try to build a human tower in Plaça Sant Jaume.

Mercat de Mercats is a festival that offers a variety of gastronomic experiences, including talks from expert gourmet chefs, cooking shows and local tapas tasting events prepared by Catalonia’s top restaurant chefs. Different markets in Barcelona also participate, giving a glimpse of the city’s daily life and traditional gourmet culture. The festival will be held from October 21 to 23 in the Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes, which is adjacent to the Torre Glòries, whose unique architecture has made it a distinctive Barcelona landmark.

48H Open House Barcelona is an architecture festival that opens up more than 200 spaces of outstanding architectural value to the public for two days. Open House Worldwide, a network of over 50 organizations that holds architecture and design events, hosts this event as part of its Open House series held in cities around the world. Many architects and volunteers will provide tours to help people learn about architecture. The festival will be held from October 22 to 23.

몽골을 즐기는 방법
1. 울란바토르의 옛 모습 발견
몽골 수도 울란바토르의 풍경을 이루는 혼종 건축물을 보고 있으면 1924년까지 이곳에 서 있던 옛 도시, 우르가의 흔적이 느껴진다. 20세기 초 소비에트연방이 몽골의 후견국이 되면서 게르 대신에 콘크리트 건물이 들어섰고, 우르가는 ‘붉은 영웅’, 즉 울란바토르로 바뀌었다. 저녁 시간이 되면 ‘서울의 거리’에 있는 술집들의 테라스는 러시아 보드카 대신 칭기즈칸 맥주를 즐기는 몽골 젊은이들로 붐빈다.
2. 드넓은 초원에서의 드라이브
울란바토르를 벗어나는 순간 완전히 새로운 풍경이 나타난다. 그곳은 보이는 곳마다 그 거리를 가늠할 수 없는 대초원이 온 세상을 뒤덮고 있다. 대초원을 가르는 길 위를 하염없이 달리기 위해서는 사륜구동 차가 필요하다. 지평선이 끝없이 펼쳐지고, 높고 광대한 하늘이 압도적인 존재감을 드리우며 광활한 초원이 계속된다.

1. Discover Ulaanbaatar
The architecture of Ulaanbaatar reminds us that until 1924 Urga stood here, a city of tents and yurts, capital of what remained of an immense nomadic country built by Genghis Khan in the 13th century. When the country fell under the control of the Soviets at the dawn of the 20th century, concrete buildings replaced the yurts, and the city was renamed Ulaanbaatar, literally meaning “red hero.”
2. Get Lost in the Steppe
As soon as you leave Ulaanbaatar, the change of scenery is radical. It is in a 4WD that you get lost on the tracks that split the steppe. The landscapes are a succession of wild expanses free of landmarks, where the horizon unrolls endlessly, and the sky’s overwhelming presence encompasses the earth.
3. 카라코룸에서의 명상
카라코룸은 1220년 몽골제국이 세운 도시로, 오르콘강 기슭에 위치한다. 한때 초기 몽골제국의 수도였지만, 오늘날까지 남아 있는 카라코룸의 유적은 에르덴주 사원뿐이다. 에르덴주 사원은 몽골 내 최초 불교 사원으로, 전국 곳곳에서 수많은 순례자가 이곳을 찾아온다. 16세기에 지어진 후 오늘날까지 오랜 역사를 버텨온 이 장엄한 사원의 외벽에는 각기 다른 크기로 제작된 108개의 불탑, 스투파를 두어 놀라운 광경을 만들어낸다.
4. 오르콘 계곡 탐험
몽골에서 가장 아름다운 길은 오르콘 계곡으로 가는 길이라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 그 전경을 감상하다 보면 유네스코가 왜 이곳을 카라코룸, 에르덴주와 함께 세계유산으로 지정했는지 수긍이 간다. 산과 사화산을 배경으로 젖줄과 같은 오르콘강이 구비구비 흐르며 푸른 계곡과 만나는 풍경은 마치 인상주의 회화를 보는 듯하다. 점점이 뿌려진 수많은 게르, 야크와 말 무리는 이 그림에 생동감을 불어넣는다.
5. 게르에서 지내는 하룻밤
게르는 나무로 만든 격자 구조물에 두꺼운 펠트를 둘러 만든 둥근 형태의 주거 공간으로, 그곳은 마치 누에고치 안에 들어서는 것처럼 안락하다. 게르를 입장할 때는 항상 오른발을 먼저 디뎌야 한다. 주인은 고기 음식과 유제품, 제과, 짠맛 나는 차 등 다양한 음식으로 손님을 환대한다. 자신의 게르 옆에 손님용 게르를 설치해놓는 유목민도 있다. 이들을 만나면 손님용 게르에서 하룻밤을 지낼 수도 있다.
3. Meditate in Karakorum
Karakorum, center of the Mongol Empire founded in 1220, stands on the banks of the Orkhon River. Of the ancient capital, only the Erdene Zuu monastery remains today. Believed to have been constructed in the 16th century, the Buddhist monastery is still majestic today. Its outer enclosure is punctuated by 108 gigantic Buddhist stupas.
4. Explore the Orkhon Valley
The Orkhon Valley is considered one of the most beautiful places in Mongolia. The panorama offered by the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape — which includes Karakorum and Erdene Zuu — amply justifies the area’s classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Resting in its setting of mountains and extinct volcanoes, the green valley of the meandering Orkhon River is speckled by countless yurts and immense herds of yak and horses that animate this landscape fit for an impressionist painting.
5. Spend a Night in a Yurt
This unique round shelter, made of a wooden trellis covered with thick layers of felt, turns out to be a real cocoon. One always enters with the right foot and hospitality obliges. In a few moments, meat, dairy products and pastries as well as salty tea are offered to passing guests.
6. 말을 타고 오르콘 돌궐 비문 찾기
오르콘 폭포는 20m 높이에서 화산 폭발로 만들어진 깊은 협곡에 떨어지는 물줄기와 비경이 어우러지는 명소다. 이곳에서 말을 타고 오르콘 돌궐 비문을 찾아가 보자. 청동기시대 거석 기념물인 오르콘 돌궐 비문은 하늘을 향해 뛰어오르는 사슴의 모습이 조각된 기이한 화강암 비석이다. 이들은 몽골의 광활한 초원 지대 곳곳에서 고독을 깨뜨리며 진정한 파수꾼 역할을 하고 있다.
7. 고비사막의 사구 방문

6. Visit the Steles on Horseback
From the famous Orkhon Falls, which tumble from a height of 20m toward a deep canyon created by the eruption of a volcano, set off on horseback for an excursion to the famous Orkhon Stele, a strange granite monolith with an engraving of deer leaping skyward. Mongolia boasts a vast number of these funerary monuments from the Bronze Age, veritable sentinels who regularly come to break the solitude of the steppes.
7. Climb the Gobi Dunes
In the south of Mongolia, a visit to the mythical Gobi Desert is a must. Majestic sand dunes known as the Khongoryn Els cut the landscape for over 180km. From their summit at more than 300m in height, the boulevard of singing dunes meets the eye as they sway to the blowing winds.

시애틀에선 길을 잃을 일이 별로 없다. 도시 어디에서나 자연 지형지물로 방향을 알 수 있기 때문이다. 다운타운을 사이에 두고 한쪽에는 퓨젓사운드가, 다른 한쪽에는 유니언 호수가 있다. 서쪽이 어딘지 알고 싶다면 하얀 페리들이 보이는 곳을 찾으면 되고, 북쪽을 알고 싶다면 이륙 중인 수상비행기를 바라보면 된다. 시애틀의 언덕은 도심 주변으로 마치 파수꾼처럼 우뚝 솟아 있어 퓨젓사운드 건너편의 올림픽산맥은 물론 바위로 이루어진 산 정상을 둘러싼 상록수림의 전경을 볼 수 있다. 가장 높은 곳에서는 레이니어산과 베이커산 같은 화산의 하얀 봉우리를 볼 수 있다.

It’s hard to get lost in Seattle, because you can always find a natural landmark to tell you where you are. With Puget Sound on one side of downtown and Lake Union on the other, one need merely look for the white ferries to know you’re facing west, or seaplanes taking off to know you’re looking to the north. Seattle’s hills rise around the central city like sentinels, offering views of the Olympic Mountains across Puget Sound and the evergreen forests that skirt the rocky summits. From the highest vantage points, the white cones of volcanoes, Mount Rainier and Mount Baker especially, are visible in the distance.
Urban Seattle is packed with museums and restaurants, high culture and gritty art — but nature is always at hand. Puget Sound, a finger of the Pacific Ocean that curls south into Washington State, teems with wildlife: the giant pacific octopus trolls its depths, while the sprightly orca whale pops above the surface to look around. The famous Pacific Northwest rain — not as bad as its reputation, locals claim — keeps foliage green year-round in the dense city. Urban life in Seattle means always feeling connected to the outdoors, whether through organized activity or just a drizzly walk past the historic blocks of Pioneer Square.

물 위의 다운타운
엘리엇만으로 부두가 나 있는 시애틀 수변 산책로 위로 바닷물의 짠 내가 감돈다. 도심 북쪽 끝, 예술 작품으로 가득 찬 올림픽 조각공원 부지 아래로는 어업, 여객업, 해운업 등의 해양산업 현장이 분주하다. 하지만 바다가 더 가깝게 느껴지는 건 오히려 내륙으로 좀 더 들어와 있는 파이크 플레이스 마켓에서다. 1907년으로 거슬러 올라가는 역사를 지닌 시장으로, 다양한 음식과 공예품을 판매한다. 천장이 있긴 하지만, 벽이 트여서 야외에 있는 듯한 개방감이 느껴진다. 시장의 상징과도 같은 빨간색 퍼블릭 마켓 간판 아래에는 파이크 플레이스 피시 마켓이 있다. 진열대를 가득 채운 통참치, 연어, 대구 등의 생선과 마치 병사들처럼 얼음 위에 줄지어 선 던지니스크랩 등을 볼 수 있다. 파이크 플레이스 피시 마켓의 또 다른 명물은 시장 상인들이다. 손님들 머리 위로 생선을 던져 주고받으며 종이로 포장하는 명장면을 보여준다.
Exploring the City’s Waterfront
The salty smell of seawater hangs above Seattle’s waterfront boardwalk, where piers jut out into Elliott Bay. At the north end of downtown, the busy marine industries of fishing, cruising and shipping unfold under the art-filled hectares of Olympic Sculpture Park.

But the sea feels somehow even closer a block or so inland, at the fish counters of Pike Place Market. The historic collection of food and craft stalls, which dates back to 1907, is under cover but with an outdoor feel thanks to the open walls. At its center, under the iconic red Public Market sign, the famous Pike Place Fish Market displays whole tuna, salmon and cod, with Dungeness crabs lined up like soldiers on mounds of ice. The fish market workers have become famous for tossing whole fish over the heads of customers to be caught by a coworker who then wraps the fresh meat in paper.

As home port for many fishing vessels bringing in Alaskan halibut, salmon and crab, Seattle’s signature meal is whatever’s freshly caught. Tucked on the second floor of the market, above the vegetable stalls and flower sellers, restaurant Matt’s in the Market turns the day’s catch into some of the city’s best fine dining.
But Seattle’s affinity for sea life goes beyond what tastes good. The market’s waterfront side nearly reaches the over-water Seattle Aquarium. More like a partially in-the-water facility, the aquarium boasts a 1.8 million-liter habitat with an undersea dome for easy fish viewing.

Seattle Center: The Past, Present and Future
Considered the city’s most famous symbol, the Space Needle represents a collective dream of a better future: the World’s Fair of 1962. The spire was erected to represent the space age then underway and a city that built air travel through its endless innovation. Today, the Space Needle is a popular place for taking in the city’s dramatic landscape, its pod-like elevators whizzing up 160m using recently renovated systems to improve energy efficiency.
At the base of the Space Needle, the fairground that once hosted the World’s Fair has become the Pacific Science Center. Stunning historic arches stand guard over the nonprofit institution that aims to educate about the natural world. There are interactive water displays and full-size dinosaur models, and the tropical butterfly house manages to be more than hands-on when the tiny, colorful insects gently land on arms and heads before flying off again into the warm air. While the entire Seattle Center campus links the futuristic design of the 1960s with Seattle’s very future-minded present, no single building makes bolder steps than Climate Pledge Arena, whose very name holds a promise. Powered by renewable energy, the arena is pursuing goals set by Amazon to be the world’s first carbon-neutral large-scale sports venue. It’s where the Seattle Kraken hockey team and the Seattle Storm basketball team play, and it has some of the greenest buildings and operations practices ever implemented.

수천 년간 우리가 지금 유니언호라고 부르는 호수 주변의 원주민은 두와미시 부족이었다. 그러다 백인 정착민이 오면서 많은 사람들이 바깥 지역으로 쫓겨나게 됐다. 하지만 1800년대 후반, 체시아후드란 이름의 한 남자는 계속 남아 이주민들이 주변에서 길을 닦고 높은 건물을 짓는 와중에도 여전히 호수를 집으로 삼고, 삼나무로 카누를 만들며 살았다. 체시아후드가 그렇게 거주지를 유지한 덕에 두와미시 부족의 맥은 20세기까지 이어질 수 있었다. 오늘날의 포티지만이 과거 그가 거주했던 곳으로, 현재는 주거 지역, 활주로, 놀이공간을 모두 갖춘 수상 단지다.

Surrounded by Water
For thousands of years, members of the Duwamish indigenous tribe lived around Lake Union. When white settlers landed in the area, many were driven out. But in the late 1800s, a man named Cheshiahud still called the lake home, digging out canoes from cedar wood even as the new arrivals erected streets and tall buildings around him. Cheshiahud maintained his residence, a link to the city’s Duwamish heritage, into the 20th century. Today, the place where he lived is known as Portage Bay, part of a water complex that manages to be a residential neighborhood, runway and play space all at the same time.

Floating homes line Lake Union’s shores, with docks serving as the sidewalks between on-water houses. The best way to view them is via kayak, rentable from several spots around the urban lake. At Agua Verde Café and Paddle Club, one can enjoy a standup paddleboard or kayak trip and a margarita and taco meal on the patio. Given the depth and size of Lake Union, the cocktail is best consumed after the boating trip. Seaplanes use the water as an airport, maneuvering around sailboats during takeoff and landing.

Farther up the Ship Canal, close to where the manmade waterway connects to Puget Sound, an architectural marvel known as the Ballard Locks controls the boat traffic in and out of Lake Union. Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the locks are devices constructed to allow boats and ships of all sizes to pass between stretches of water that are at different levels.

더 이상 시골이 아닌 와인 마을

Where Wine Country Isn’t So Country
The Seattle suburb of Woodinville was a small rural town when wineries first called it home, its scenic hectares on the north end of Lake Washington offering space for wine production facilities. While most grapes are grown in eastern Washington’s plentiful vineyards, major winemakers started a trend in Woodinville that has led to well over 100 different companies operating in the area.
Today, tasting rooms line the small town’s roads, some in clusters close enough to walk between. In summer, winemakers pour small glasses and explain how the state’s unique terroir creates distinctive wine, making the Pacific Northwest the biggest wine-producing region in the country after California. Chateau Ste. Michelle anchors the wine scene. The winery is modeled after the architecture of a French château and the farm-to-table restaurant, Herbfarm, connects fine dining to what is grown right on site.
Woodinville’s other great attraction shows off the natural beauty right at hand, even though western Washington’s climate isn’t the most ideal for grape growing. The Sammamish River Trail runs 16km along the waterway which it is named after, along second-growth forest and open fields. The paved, flat path is popular with cyclists, offering views of the Cascades and Mount Rainier from some scenic sections. Like the Burke-Gilman Trail in Seattle, the railroad-turned-bike path transformed an old industrial relic into a way for locals to enjoy the outdoors.

Above It All
In Washington, they simply call it “the mountain.” Mount Rainier is actually a stratovolcano, an active one, though not prone to frequent eruptions like neighboring Mount St. Helens. At around 4km high, Rainier (or Tahoma, as it was known to tribes before the white settlement) is one of the most scenic peaks in the country. Draped with glaciers and surrounded by a stunning old growth evergreen forest, it is only a few hours from major urban centers. The main visitor area, open year-round, is called Paradise, a fitting name when the wildflower meadows erupt into bloom.

Hikers can wander the verdant meadows of Paradise before popping into the historic Paradise Inn, whose steep roofs withstand some of the most intense snows in the contiguous United States every winter. Thanks to a well-developed trail network and a staff of national park rangers, the mountain offers hiking for every experience level, with even paved paths near the visitor center accessible for exploration. Just outside the national park, Crystal Mountain utilizes its ski resort infrastructure to go one better — a gondola that whisks visitors roughly 730m to the summit. A restaurant at the top offers a grand view of Rainier, at least when the famously temperamental weather allows the clouds to part.

The smallest province, yet the biggest island in Thailand, Phuket is like no other, with beautiful beaches perfect for a dreamy vacation and a historic old town filled with cultural adventures.
태국 서해안 안다만해에 위치한 푸껫은 태국에서 가장 작은 지역구인 동시에 태국의 가장 큰 섬이기도 하다. ‘안다만의 진주’라 불릴 정도로 해변과 주변 섬이 아름다워 관광객을 불러 모은다. “푸껫은 세계적으로 잘 알려져 있어요. 모든 것을 가진 섬이기 때문이죠.” 푸껫 토박이이자 서핑스쿨인 자레따르 서퍼걸에서 서핑 강사로 일하는 바란야 초끄의 말이다. “맛있는 음식과 편리한 교통수단, 서핑이나 다이빙처럼 다양한 수상스포츠와 활동이 준비돼 있고 인근 섬도 쉽게 방문할 수 있습니다.” 푸껫은 꼬피피, 꼬시밀란, 꼬야오야이, 꼬라차 등 주변의 인기 섬을 연결하는 여행 허브로 유명하지만, 푸껫 자체로도 매력적인 해변을 많이 가지고 있다. 푸껫을 처음 방문하는 사람들은 활기 넘치는 빠똥, 까론, 까따, 라와이 해변 등을 즐겨 찾는다. 반면 현지 주민은 좀 더 조용하고 평온한 수린이나 방따오 해변을 선호한다.
Situated in the Andaman Sea just off the west coast of Thailand, Phuket (nicknamed “The Pearl of the Andaman”) offers the best of both worlds — sun-drenched days on heavenly beaches and a historic walking tour along streets lined with charming Sino-Portuguese architecture. “Phuket is well-known across the world because the island has it all,” says Varanya Chokkue, a native Phuketian and surf instructor at Zaretar Surfergirl. “We’ve got good food, accessible transportation and many water sports and activities to do, such as surfing or diving. It is easy to visit nearby islands as well.” Renowned as a travel hub connecting numerous famous islands including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Similan, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Racha, Phuket itself is also home to many beaches no less enchanting. The liveliness of Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai is why they are among the most favored beaches for visitors, while Surin and Bang Tao remain locals’ favorites for their peacefulness.
하얀 모래사장과 푸른 하늘을 뒤로하고 시내로 나오면, ‘푸껫 올드 타운’으로 불리는 지역이 나온다. 이곳에서는 중국과 말레이의 영향을 받아 탄생한 혼종 문화, 즉 ‘페라나칸’ 또는 ‘바바논야’라고 부르는 문화가 곳곳에 반영된 모습을 볼 수 있다. 특히 푸껫은 중국계 태국인이 정착한 지역 중 가장 오래된 역사를 지닌 곳이기도 하다. 그래서 태국과 중국 두 나라 문화의 영향을 받은 건축, 음식, 의복 등을 푸껫 올드 타운 곳곳에서 만날 수 있다. 그리고 푸껫이란 이름은 ‘부킷’이란 단어에서 나온 것으로, 바하사 멜라유, 즉 말레이어로 ‘언덕’이라는 이름에서 유래했다. 언덕이 많은 푸껫 지형을 따라 섬 이름이 생겨난 것이다. 팡응아, 디북, 탈랑, 사뚠, 푸껫의 상점가에는 다채로운 중국-포르투갈 양식의 건물이 줄지어 서 있다. 대부분 기념품 가게로 내부를 개조하긴 했지만, 외부는 여전히 과거의 아름다움을 간직하고 있다. 산책하며 곳곳의 고전적인 건물을 방문하고, 카페에 앉아 지나가는 사람들을 구경하거나 레스토랑에서 페라나칸 음식을 맛보다 보면 한나절이 훌쩍 지나간다. 무엇을 원하든 하나부터 열까지 그 모든 걸 찾을 수 있는 곳이 바로 푸껫이다.
Meanwhile, away from the white sandy strips and azure sky lies an area simply called Phuket Old Town. Here, motifs of the Peranakan or Baba-Nyonya culture, a hybrid of Chinese and Malay influences, can be found almost everywhere, especially in architecture, food and clothing. Even the word Phuket is derived from the word bukit, which means hills in Malay. Colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses line the roads of Phang Nga, Dibuk, Thalang, Satun and Phuket City. Although most of the shophouses’ interiors have been converted into souvenir stores, their exteriors still retain the beauty of decades long gone. Visitors can embark on a half-day walking tour around this lively neighborhood, going in and out of classic buildings, people-watching in cafés or savoring Peranakan cuisine in restaurants. All in all, whatever your heart’s desire, Phuket has it.
까따 해변
매년 5월부터 10월까지 서핑 시즌이 되면 전 세계 서퍼들은 안다만해에 위치한 까따 해변을 찾는다. 1.5km 길이의 초승달 모양을 가진 해변으로, 서핑에 익숙지 않은 초심자가 즐길 수 있는 작은 파도부터 경험이 풍부한 서퍼들이 도전할 만한 큰 파도까지 모두 볼 수 있다. 서핑 학교가 여럿 있는데, 1시간가량의 짧은 강습도 진행하므로 6세부터 65세 사이라면 누구나 서핑을 배울 수 있다.
Kata Beach
Andaman waves hitting the beach at Kata have been welcoming both new and pro surfers from around the world during the surfing season (from May to October) for more than 20 years. The crescent shape of the 1.5km-long beach offers small waves mild enough for leg-shaking newbies as well as big waves challenging enough for those with more experience.

이 저택은 한때 영향력 있는 중국인 이민자 탄마샹의 소유였는데, 현재는 셰프 누로르 소마니 스떼뻬가 이끌고 다양한 태국 및 페라나칸 요리를 선보이는 파인 다이닝 레스토랑, 블루 엘리펀트로 운영 중이다. 태국 요리 강좌도 진행한다. 레스토랑을 이용하지 않더라도 밖에서 저택의 아름다운 건축물을 감상할 수 있다.
Phra Pitak Chinpracha House
Built in 1903, Phra Pitak Chinpracha House is one of the most beautiful Sino-Portuguese mansions in Phuket. The builder was an influential Chinese immigrant, Tan Ma Siang, aka Phra Pitak Chinpracha. Nowadays, Blue Elephant manages the mansion as a fine-dining restaurant. Chef Nooror Somany Steppe is behind the creation of its vast selection of Thai and Peranakan cuisine. Thai cooking classes starting from around $90 are also on offer. Nonpatrons are allowed to stroll around the grounds.
차타드은행
푸껫과 팡응아 길이 만나는 코너에 있는 건물은 예전에 차타드은행으로 운영했다. 국내외 많은 관광객이 화사한 노란색의 중국-포르투갈 양식 건물 앞에서 사진을 찍기 위해 이곳을 찾는다. ‘응오카키’라 부르는 아름다운 아치형 회랑이 잘 보존돼 있어 지나가던 이들이 여기에서 잠시 뜨거운 햇볕이나 비를 피하기도 한다.
The Chartered Bank
At the corner of Phuket and Phang Nga road is the Chartered Bank building. Although it no longer operates as a bank, it is still frequently visited by tourists for its bright yellow Sino-Portuguese style architecture, which makes for a great photo-op. The archway corridor is still beautifully intact and provides shelter from the sun and rain for passersby.
쌍탐 사원
호키엔족의 후손인 현지인들이 ‘텅공통’이라고 부르는 쌍탐 사원은 푸껫에서 130년의 역사를 지닌 가장 오래된 중국 사원이다. 한때 탄 가문이 소유했으나 2000년에 대대적인 복원 작업을 거쳐 대중에게 공개했다. 쌍탐 사원의 화려한 연미형 용마루와 자기로 만든 조각상은 호키엔 양식의 특징이다.
Sang Tham Shrine
Also known as Teng Gong Tong to local Hoklo descendants, Sang Tham Shrine is the oldest Chinese shrine in Phuket, with over 130 years of history. It was once privately owned by the Tan family but was opened to the public following a major restoration in 2000. Its colorful swallowtail roof and porcelain sculptures are hallmarks of Hokkien-style temples.
푸껫 타이 후아 뮤지엄
끄라비 로드에 위치한 타이 후아 뮤지엄은 푸껫에서 가장 오래된 중국 학교를 개조한 곳이다. 내부에는 14개 전시실이 있으며, 푸껫섬의 역사와 함께 중국인 이민자들이 어떻게 푸껫에 정착했는지를 보여준다. 멀티미디어 디스플레이를 통해 그들의 생활 방식, 예술, 음식, 건축 등을 경험할 수 있다.

Phuket Thai Hua Museum
On Krabi Road, a grand white mansion, formerly the oldest Hokkien Chinese language school in Phuket, is now the Phuket Thai Hua Museum. The 14 exhibition rooms show the history of the island and how the Hokkien Chinese settled there. Learn about their beliefs, lifestyle, food and architecture via multimedia displays. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance is $6 for foreigners.
푸껫 워킹 스트리트
현지인들에게 랏야이 워킹 스트리트라 알려진 이곳은 일요일에만 문을 여는 시장이다. 맛있는 해산물과 푸껫 음식인 아뽕, 오따오 등을 맛볼 수 있으니 허기진 채로 방문할 것. 시장 노점에서 진행하는 바 페인팅 워크숍에 참여할 수 있으며, 푸껫 관련 기념품이나 수공예품도 이곳에서 판매한다.
Phuket Walking Street
Phuket Walking Street is a Sunday market on Thalang Road. Here, you can taste delectable seafood and Phuketian street food, such as a-pong (savory pancakes) and o-tao (oyster omelets). You can buy local goods and experience a mini batik painting workshop at an open-air shop in the middle of the market.
더 메모리 앳 온온 호텔
더 메모리 앳 온온 호텔은 태국 드라마 촬영지로 유명해졌지만 사실 1927년 설립된 푸껫 최초의 호텔이다. 당시에 두드러진 중국-포르투갈 양식을 따라 파사드는 서양식 화장 도료로 덮고, 내부는 서양식과 중국식을 혼합해 장식했다. 야외 중정이 채광을 도와 건물을 환하게 밝히고 생기를 불어넣는다. 투숙을 하지 않더라도 1층 로비를 방문해 호텔을 감상할 수 있다.
The Memory at On On Hotel
Famous as the shooting location for a Thai drama, The Memory at On On Hotel opened in 1927 as Phuket’s first hotel. In keeping with the Sino-Portuguese style prominent in that era, Western-style stucco overlays the façade, while a mix of Western- and Chinese-style decorations adorn the interior. The open-air courtyard allows ample light in, breathing life into the building.

어느새 뉴욕의 한식은 코리아타운을 벗어나 로컬 퀴진으로 발전했다. “전에는 불고기, 잡채 등 대표 메뉴에 초점을 맞췄다면 2019년부터 사찰 음식, 스트리트 푸드 등 다양성에 집중하고 있습니다.” 뉴욕한국문화원의 조진수 프로그램 디렉터는 한국 음식을 홍보하며 변화를 목격했다. 한국농수산식품유통공사(aT) 뉴욕 지사의 통계에 따르면 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 동안 한국 식재료의 대미 수출은 꾸준히 증가했다. “미국인은 이제 음식을 통해 한국 문화를 경험하고 있다고 생각합니다.” 심화섭 aT 미주지역본부 본부장은 매년 달라지는 한국 식품의 위상을 경험한다.
Korean food has escaped from the confines of Korea Town on 32nd Street and become a true part of New York’s cuisine. “In the past, it was mostly centered around dishes such as Korean BBQ, bulgogi and japchae, but since 2019 there has been a greater focus on diversity,” says Jin Jo, program director of cuisine and film at the Korean Cultural Center New York. According to statistics from aT, the New York-based Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, exports of Korean ingredients to the U.S. steadily climbed throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. “I think Americans are now experiencing Korean culture through food,” says Hwa-sop Shim, president of the aT Center New York.

다양한 메뉴와 한국 문화 경험은 근 몇 년간 뉴욕 한식당의 화두였다. 현재 뉴욕은 한식 셰프들이 고도의 테크닉과 창의성으로 한식을 진화시키는 실험 무대가 됐다. ‘오이지 미’의 김세홍 셰프는 이 과정을 ‘로컬라이제이션(지역화)’이라는 단어로 함축한다.
“한식이 저평가돼 있었기 때문에 오히려 창의적으로 현지화할 수 있는 부분이 많다고 생각했어요.” 최근 업스케일 레스토랑 오이지 미를 오픈한 그의 회상이다. 오이지 미에선 ‘한국 고유의 맛을 지키되 현지인이 접근 가능한 한국 음식’이라는 철학을 고수하는 5가지 코스 요리를 선보인다. “맛뿐 아니라 전통미를 가미한 인테리어와 식기 하나까지 한국적인 것을 스토리텔링하는 공간으로 만들고 싶었습니다.”
이은지 셰프의 ‘리제’ 또한 독창적인 디저트를 선보인다. 그는 프랑스에서 공부한 뒤 ‘정식’에서 디저트 총괄 셰프를 담당했다. “한국인 페이스트리 셰프로서 프랑스 테크닉을 이용해 한국의 정신과 문화를 알리고 뉴요커 입맛에도 맞추는, 조화로운 디저트를 만들고 싶습니다.”
하나 막걸리 테이스팅 바에서는 생막걸리와 전통주 칵테일을 경험할 수 있다. At Hana Makgeolli’s Tasting Bar, you can experience draft makgeolli and cocktails made with traditional Korean liquor.
Changing menus and Korean cultural experiences have been hot topics in New York’s Korean restaurants over the past few years. New York is currently the experimental stage on which Korean chefs are leading the evolution of Korean food with advanced techniques and creativity. Brian Se-hong Kim, head chef at Oiji Mi, sums up this process as localization. “Korean food was underrated, so I thought there were a number of ways we could experiment with creative localization,” he recalls regarding the opening of Oiji Mi, an upscale restaurant that builds on the original Oiji. “I wanted to create a space that was not just about taste, but also featured an interior with a touch of traditional beauty.”

‘단지’와 ‘한잔’으로 유명한 김훈 셰프는 한식 문화를 더 적극적으로 알리는 문화 대사다. 그는 최근 ‘리틀 반찬 숍’을 오픈하고 한국 반찬과 한국산 고급 식재료 판매에 나섰다. “미국인에게 남은 음식이란 달갑지 않은 이미지입니다. 그들에게 한국의 반찬 문화를 소개해서 더 일상적으로 한식을 즐기게 만들고 싶습니다.” 한국 장에 오랫동안 관심을 기울인 그는 숍 내에 다이닝 ‘메주’를 만들고, 장을 중심으로 한 코스 메뉴를 선보일 예정이다.

Eun-ji Lee is a chef who invented a unique dessert, Lysée. After studying in France, she worked as head dessert chef at Jungsik before launching a dessert boutique, also called Lysée, in June. “Since I’m a Korean pastry chef, I wanted to use French techniques to create a dessert that would both appeal to the tastes of New Yorkers and tell people about the soul and culture of Korea,” she says. The signature Lysée is patterned after Korean roofing tiles and contains brown rice milk, made by mixing roasted brown rice with milk.
Chef Hooni Kim recently opened Little Banchan Shop, a store that sells Korean side dishes and high-quality ingredients purchased from Korea. “To most Americans, the concept of leftover food is not very appealing. I wanted to help them enjoy Korean food in a more everyday setting by showing off Korea’s side dish culture,” he says.
브루클린에 위치한 ‘하나 막걸리’는 미국의 유일한 한국 막걸리 양조장이다. 철저하게 전통 방식을 고수하며 한국산 누룩으로 빚은 전통주는 뉴욕 마이크로 브루어리 세계에 ‘Sool(술)’이란 장르로 소개된다. “뉴욕에 하나 막걸리를 소개하기 위해 교육적인 접근방식을 택했습니다. 한국에 대한 지식이 없어도 한국 술의 깊이를 배우면서 그 역사, 방법, 다양성을 존중할 수 있게 되죠.” 앨리스 전 대표는 전통에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 옹기나 놋쇠 도구, 도자기를 미니멀한 테이스팅 바 공간에 포인트로 배치해 한국 앤티크 감성을 자연스레 녹여 넣었다.

Located in Brooklyn, Hana Makgeolli is the only Korean makgeolli brewery in the U.S. The brewery strictly abides by traditional methods and offers alcohol made with Korean-sourced malt to New York microbreweries under the name sool (the Korean word for alcohol). To promote greater understanding of Korean traditions, CEO Alice Jeon has created a tasting bar featuring minimalistic pottery, brass tools and ceramics to naturally create an antique Korean vibe.

베를린에서 한식이 존재감을 드러낸 것은 2009년이지만, 본격적인 양적 팽창은 2015년부터다. 이들은 본토의 맛과 트렌드를 구현하고 보다 독창적인 콘셉트, 전문적인 메뉴로 어필했다. 지금 이 도시엔 식품, 케이터링 업체까지 합쳐 한식 공간의 수가 100여 곳을 훌쩍 넘는다. 베를린이 독일 한식의 메카라고 해도 과언이 아닌 이유다. “K-푸드의 유행을 방증하는 현상이 있어요. 다른 아시아계 이민자와 현지인들이 한식 메뉴를 끼워 넣거나 한식당을 여는 것이죠.” 일간지 <베를리너 차이퉁>의 기자 죄렌 키텔이 귀띔한다. “직원 중 아무도 한국어를 할 줄 모르지만 치맥, 강남 스타일 칵테일, 한국의 커피 전문점에서 볼 수 있는 케이크와 음료를 판매해요. 한식이 잘 팔리니까요.”
Korean food first made its way onto the Berlin scene in 2009, but the real quantitative expansion began in 2015. While still embodying the tastes and trends of the peninsula, there’s even more charm to be found in the newer creative concepts and specialized dishes. Currently the number of food and catering businesses in the city numbers well over 100, making Berlin the German center for Korean food. “There is a phenomenon that provides evidence of the K-food trend: that other Asian immigrants and locals are putting Korean dishes on the menu or opening their own Korean restaurants,” says Sören Kittel, a reporter for Berlin’s leading daily newspaper, Berliner Zeitung, and a correspondent who worked in Korea for a year. “None of the employees can speak Korean or even notice the mistakes in Korean written on the menu, but they still sell chimaek, Gangnam-style cocktails, and the cakes and beverages you’d find in a Korean café. Because Korean food sells.”

트렌드에 민감하고 크고 작은 행사가 많은 베를린에서 인기 있는 음식 카테고리 중 하나는 스트리트 푸드다. ‘스트리트 푸드 서스데이’, ‘바이트 클럽’ 등 힙한 행사나 축제라면 어김없이 ‘손키친’을 만날 수 있다. 손키친은 베를린의 ‘멀티쿨티’한 매력을 접목한 K-스트리트 푸드를 선보인다. 허니 바비큐 양념의 소고기를 곁들인 비빔밥, 중동식 소스를 얹은 김치 타코, 바오 번에 김치와 두부로 속을 채운 김치 빵 등 모험을 서슴지 않는다. 이를 맛보기 위해 손키친의 빨간색 푸드 트럭 앞은 물론 칸트 거리와 박람회장의 매장 앞엔 긴긴 줄이 이어진다.
스트리트 푸드를 보다 감각적인 공간에서 맛볼 수 있는 곳이 있다. 낮엔 분식을, 밤엔 술을 즐길 수 있는 ‘노 킴 팍’이다. 노 킴 팍은 베를린에서 가장 성공한 이민자 셰프로 손꼽히는 둑 노와 한국인 오너이자 인테리어 디자이너인 김현정, 요식업 전문가인 박승준이 함께 문을 연 식당이다. 넷플릭스의 한식 관련 콘텐츠를 모두 챙겨 본다는 둑 노의 한식은 여느 ‘흉내만 낸’ 한식과는 다르다. 라면과 떡볶이, 잡채, 양념치킨 등 본래의 맛을 추구하되 로컬의 입맛에 맞춰 적당한 변형을 더한다.

These days, one of the popular food categories in Berlin is street food. If an event or festival is being held like Street Food Thursday or Bite Club, you’re sure to find Son Kitchen there. Son Kitchen offers K-street food that showcases Berlin’s multi-kulti (multicultural) charm. Dishes like bibimbap garnished with honey-barbecue marinated beef, kimchi tacos with a Middle Eastern sauce, and kimchi bread — a bao bun stuffed with tofu and three types of kimchi — don’t hesitate to take risks. Going beyond street food is a place where you can get more of your senses involved. At Ngo Kim Pak, you can enjoy bunsik (the Korean term for light, snackish meals) during the day and a suljip (or pub) at night. Ngo Kim Pak was founded by Berlin’s most successful immigrant chef, Duc Ngo, interior designer and Korean co-owner Hyunjung Kim, and restaurant industry expert Seung-jun Park. Duc Ngo creates dishes that are different from knockoff Korean food. He goes for authentic Korean dishes such as tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), japchae (glass noodles), and sweet and spicy fried chicken, and adds a twist to accommodate local ingredients and tastes.

‘솔잎’, ‘비움’, ‘오감’, ‘봄봄’은 지금 런던에서 모던 코리안 스타일이 반영된 한국 식문화를 선보이는 곳으로 흥미롭게도 모두 2020년에 첫걸음을 뗐다. 이들은 런던에서 빠르게 자리 잡을 수 있었던 이유로 한국 문화 콘텐츠에 대한 폭발적 관심을 꼽는다. 넷플릭스, 유튜브 등의 온라인 콘텐츠 플랫폼을 타고 전 세계로 퍼진 K-드라마, 영화, 음악은 자연스레 그 안에 녹아 있는 식문화까지 홍보하는 결과를 낳았다. “이전에는 한국인 위주 혹은 한국인이 주도해 한식당을 방문하는 비율이 주를 이뤘던 반면, 이제는 한국인 동행 없이도 한식당을 찾는 로컬의 비율이 아주 높아졌어요. 비움도 마찬가지고요.”
Sollip, be-oom, Ogam and Bombom are all venues in London that opened their doors in 2020. They cite the tremendous interest in Korean cultural content during Covid-19 as the reason they were so quickly able to become established. “In the past, visitors to Korean restaurants were predominantly Korean or accompanied by Koreans, but now, the percentage of local residents who seek out Korean restaurants without any Korean companions has gotten much higher. The same goes for be-oom,” says be-oom CEO Soo-ji Im. Her premium Korean tea house brand sells not only tea, but also teaware made by Korean artisans. It also provides tasting and blending workshops.

임수지 대표가 론칭한 비움은 한국 차를 다루는 프리미엄 코리안 티 카페이자 브랜드. 차뿐 아니라 한국 작가의 다구를 판매하고, 테이스팅 혹은 블렌딩 티 워크숍을 통해 중국, 일본과 한국 차 문화가 어떻게 다른지 교육하기도 한다.
올해 초 런던에서 한국인 최초로 미쉐린 스타를 받은 파인 다이닝 레스토랑 솔잎의 박웅철 오너 셰프는 런던의 열린 태도를 또 하나의 특징으로 꼽는다.
“새로운 경험이나 시도에 대해 유럽에서 런던만큼 열린 곳이 또 있을까요? 다만 런던은 아직 뉴욕만큼 한식이 활성화돼 있지는 않거든요. 디저트나 스낵을 포함해 더 다양한 K-푸드가 런던에 들어왔으면 합니다.”

Woong-chul Park, owner and chef of fine-dining restaurant Sollip, which earlier this year became the first Korean restaurant in London to earn a Michelin star, considers the city’s open-mindedness to be one of its signature characteristics. “Is there any place in Europe as open to trying new experiences as London?” asks Park. “And yet, the Korean food scene in London is still not as burgeoning as it is in New York. I’m hoping that more K-food, including desserts and snacks, will make its way to London.”

솔잎에서는 프렌치 베이스에 한식 재료나 조리 기법이 어우러진 음식들을 만나볼 수 있다. ‘가리비 물회’에는 고추장, 식초, 설탕 대신 과채류를 발효해 만든 그라니타를 얹어 물회의 식감과 맛을 재현했다. 시그니처 메뉴인 ‘다이칸 타르트 타탱’은 무가 들어간 타르트에 보리 향이 나는 글레이즈를 바르고 통보리, 한국산 죽염, 깨 등을 얹어 낸다.
전통주 홍보대사로 유럽에서 활동하며 한국 전통주 베이스의 칵테일 바 오감을 운영하는 김태열 대표는 유튜브 채널 ‘영국 남자’의 인기를 실감한다. “그 채널에 전통주가 나온 이후 확실히 오감을 찾는 분들이 많아졌어요. 보통 이강주 베이스의 칵테일로 입맛을 돋운 후에 식사와 함께 막걸리를 즐기죠.” 지난해부터는 아예 막걸리 양조장을 지어 생막걸리를 생산, 판매하고 있다. 루바브, 망고, 밤, 고구마 맛 등 제철 재료를 사용해 때마다 내놓으며 골라 먹는 재미까지 더했다.
At Sollip, you can find dishes with a French base that layer in Korean ingredients and cooking techniques. Scallop mulhoe (cold and spicy raw seafood soup) recreates the texture and taste of mulhoe by adding a granita made of fermented fruits and vegetables rather than the traditional red pepper paste, vinegar and sugar. The signature dish, daikon tarte tatin, is a radish tart with a barley glaze, sprinkled with barley grains, Korean bamboo salt, and sesame seeds. Tae-yeol Kim, who is active in Europe as a goodwill ambassador for Korean traditional liquor and is the CEO of Korean-liquor-based cocktail bar Ogam, personally experienced K-food popularity after his appearance on YouTube channel Yeongguk Namja-Korean Englishman.

“After Korean traditional liquor was featured on the channel, there are definitely more people seeking it out. Usually, after whetting our appetites with leegangju-based cocktails, we enjoy some makgeolli with dinner.” he says. Last year, he built a makgeolli brewery to produce and sell the traditional cloudy rice wine.

From Euljiro to Mullae, hidden among Seoul’s old roads are hip new cafés and restaurants that are bringing a new atmosphere to each area. Here are places offering visitors a unique travel experience, places where Seoul’s past and present intersect.
골목 사이로 흐르는 힙한 바이브, 을지로 평일 아침 을지로에 가면 미로처럼 자리한 철공소 골목, 인쇄 골목, 조명 골목 사이로 공구나 작업물을 나르는 상인들을 볼 수 있다. 바쁜 걸음으로 움직이며 일하는 그들의 모습에서 에너지가 넘치는 날것의 서울을 목도한다. 이렇듯 전통적으로 도시 제조업 지역인 을지로는 요즘 젊은 층 사이에서 힙과 을지로의 합성어인 ‘힙지로’로 더 많이 불린다. 카페, 서점, LP 바 등 감각적인 공간들이 골목마다 자리하고 있기 때문이다. 사람 한 명이 겨우 들어갈 만한 좁은 골목에 근사한 카페가 나타나거나, 간판도 제대로 없는 낡은 건물에 루프톱 바가 숨어 있는 식이다. 한 아티스트 부부가 갤러리에 의지하지 않고 독립적인 아티스트로서 관객들을 만나고자 오픈한 카페 겸 전시 공간인 아트쉬프트 또한 을지로3가역 근처 인쇄 골목의 오래된 건물 꼭대기 층에 자리하고 있다. 을지로에 둥지를 튼 이유는 을지로 3가와 4가 사이에만 80여 개의 미술 스튜디오가 밀집돼 있고, 샌프란시스코에서 나고 자란 남편 잭 크리의 눈에 을지로가 ‘살아 있는 한국’처럼 보였기 때문이라고. 부부는 1년씩 돌아가며 전시를 진행하는데 이때마다 공간 전체의 인테리어가 달라진다. 이곳에서는 한 달에 한 번 클래식 연주회인 ‘애프터아워즈’가 열려, 클래식 음악가들과 직접 소통하며 공연을 즐길 수 있다.

Euljiro : Where Hip Vibes Permeate the Alleys Euljiro has traditionally been a neighborhood of urban manufacturing, but the younger generation now calls this area Hip-jiro — combining hip and Euljiro — due to the cafés, bookstores, LP bars and more in almost every alley. Impressive cafés pop up out of nowhere on narrow backstreets, and rooftop bars are hidden on the top of buildings without proper signs. On top of one old building in Euljiro’s printing shop alley, an artist couple opened their own café and exhibition space, Art x Shift. With about 80 art studios concentrated in the area around the building, the location was an obvious choice. The husband, Zachary Roberts, said that in his eyes the neighborhood embodies the vibrancy of Korea. The couple holds an exhibition every year, completely transforming the interior of the café, and each month they hold a classical music night called Afterhours, where musicians commune and perform.

연무장길에는 국내 최대 수제화 산업 지역인 수제화 거리도 함께 자리한다. Yeonmujang-gil Street is the center of Korea’s handmade shoe industry.
서울의 트렌드가 탄생하는 곳, 성수 지하철 2호선 성수역에서 뚝섬역 사이로 길게 뻗은 성수동 연무장길은 원래 각종 제조 공장이 들어선 공업단지였으나, 공장을 개조한 카페와 편집 숍, 복합문화공간 등이 들어서며 핫 플레이스의 메카로 변했다. 지난 5월에는 디올이 연무장길 끝자락에 팝업스토어를 오픈해 또 한 번 이목을 끌었다. 이렇듯 성수가 트렌드와 문화를 선도하는 지역이 된 데에는 성수동을 중심으로 먼치스앤구디스, 포지티브 제로 라운지, 보이어 등 여러 공간을 기획, 운영하는 팀 포지티브 제로의 영향이 컸다. 팀 포지티브 제로의 두 번째 공간인 카페 포제에서는 스페셜티 커피와 함께 미술, 패션, 사진 전시를 관람할 수 있다. 여기엔 소비자들이 커피라는 매개를 통해 예술에 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 한 의도가 담겨 있다.
Seongsu: Where Seoul’s Trends are Born Originally a complex of manufacturing plants, Yeonmujang-gil Street in the Seongsu-dong area became popular when these industrial buildings were transformed into arts and culture spaces, fashionable cafés and curated shops. Seongsu has become such a leading area of trends and culture largely due to efforts by Team Positive Zero, a company which operates various trendy spaces such as Munchies and Goodies, Boyer and Positive Zero Lounge in Seongsu-dong. Café Poze, Team Positive Zero’s second venture located on Yeonmujang-gil Street, offers specialty coffee and hosts various exhibitions. The goal is to use coffee to bring patrons to a place where they can experience art.

먹자골목 중심부의 전통적인 상점들 사이에서 홀로 현대적 외관을 갖춘 식료품점인 365일장은 넷플릭스 다큐멘터리 <길 위의 셰프들>에 소개된 박가네 빈대떡의 추상미 대표가 설립한 321플랫폼에서 연 공간이다. 할머니와 어머니에 이어 3대째 박가네 빈대떡을 운영하는 추 대표는 새로운 시장 경험을 제공하기 위해 광장시장 브랜드화에 도전하고 있다. 그 일환으로 365일장에서는 시장의 먹거리와 어울리는 전통주를 비롯한 각 지방의 특색 있는 식료품과 함께 광장시장의 정체성을 현대적으로 재해석한 굿즈를 판매한다.
The only shop in the center of the food alley with a modern appearance, 365 Iljang, was opened by Sang-mi Choo, the CEO of Bakgane Bindaetteok introduced in the Netflix series, Street Food. She is the third person to run it after her grandmother and mother. She has resolved to brand Gwangjang Market as a place that provides a new market experience. In pursuit of this goal, 365 Iljang sells local food products that are unique to each region, including traditional liquor that goes well with the food available in the market and trendy goods that bring a modern feel to this traditional space.

한국적인 동시에 이국적인, 해방촌 서울의 중심지인 남산 아랫자락에 자리한 해방촌은 8·15광복 이후 귀국한 동포와 월남민 등이 정착하면서 조성된 마을이다. 1990년대 후반부터는 미군 등 외국인이 유입되며 다문화 주거지로 변모하기도 했다. 특히 많은 외국인이 거주하는 저지대의 HBC가로 부근은 여러 나라의 문화가 한데 어우러져 이국적인 분위기를 풍기며, 언덕 지대에 위치해 서울 도심 전경이 파노라마처럼 펼쳐지는 해방촌 신흥시장 일대는 8·15광복 이후와 1970년대 산업화 시대의 옛 풍경을 그대로 간직하고 있다. 시장 부근에는 젊은 대표들이 운영하는 맛집과 카페 등도 자리하는데, 윤주당은 박록담 전통주 명인에게 사사한 윤나라 대표가 전통주의 매력을 널리 알리고자 지난 2019년 마련한 공간이다. 단지 전통주를 판매하는 것에 그치지 않고, 술 빚기 클래스를 통해 전통주를 제대로 배우고 맛보며 만들어볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 또한 지난해 8월에는 본관 바로 맞은편에 전통주 다이닝 바인 별관을 오픈했다. 돼지 특수 부위와 채소를 넣어 만든 테린, 제주 막창 순대, 닭발 편육 등으로 구성된 ‘조선의 샤퀴테리’같이 오직 윤주당에서만 맛볼 수 있는 특별한 한식 타파스를 선보인다.

Haebangchon: Where Korean and Foreign Cultures Coincide Located at the foot of Namsan Mountain, in the center of Seoul, Haebangchon was where Koreans from abroad and the North settled after liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Since the late 1990s, an influx of international residents has transformed the neighborhood. The low-lying main street has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, and the market area, located on a hill with a panoramic view of downtown Seoul, retains the scenery of 1970s industrialization. Close by, there are restaurants and cafés run by young entrepreneurs. One of these is Yunjudang, a place opened by Na-ra Yun to spread the charm of traditional liquor, and offer classes on tasting and making it. In August last year, Yun opened the Yunjudang Annex, a traditional liquor bar that offers special Korean-style tapas, including Joseon charcuterie with terrine made from pork loin and vegetables, Jeju makchang sundae and dakbal pyeonyuk.

황동을 가공하던 신주공장 자리에 들어선 문래방구는 내부에 공업적인 인테리어 요소가 남아 있어 이를 감상하는 재미를 준다. Mullaebanggu, located in the former Sinju Workshop where brass products were made, has some old industrial interior elements.
공업과 예술의 역동적인 공존, 문래 철공소 밀집 지역이던 문래는 1970년대에 다양한 기계 부품을 생산하며 호황기를 맞았지만, 1990년대 말부터 중국산 부품이 수입되면서 문을 닫는 철공소가 늘어났다. 빈 공간은 저렴한 작업 공간이 필요한 젊은 예술인으로 채워지기 시작했고, 이후 문래는 공업과 예술이 자연스럽게 교류하고 상생하는 동네가 됐다. 아티스트들의 그래피티로 장식된 철공소 대문 너머로 숙련공들이 쇠를 다루는 모습은 문래동에서만 볼 수 있는 이색적인 풍경이다. 문래창작촌에 위치한 에스프레소 바 겸 복합문화공간인 문래방구 또한 지난 2016년 문래에 정착한 이준환 산업 디자이너가 연 곳이다. 귀여운 캐릭터 굿즈와 문구류도 판매하며, 3층의 공방에서는 가죽 공예 클래스를 진행한다.
Mullae: the Dynamic Coexistence of Industry and Art Mullae, a densely populated area of ironworks, started to decline in the 1990s following an increase in cheap imported products. Young artists flocked to the area in search of inexpensive workspaces, and since then, Mullae has become a neighborhood where industry and art naturally interact and coexist. Mullaebanggu, an espresso bar and cultural space located in Mullae Creative Village, was opened by industrial designer June-hwan Lee, who settled in Mullae in 2016. You can buy goods here featuring the brand’s cute character, and take leather crafting classes in the workshop located on the third floor.

가구 브랜드 비플러스엠의 대표가 자연 속에 방치돼 있던 학교에 새로운 숨결을 불어넣어 가족을 비롯해 누구나 쉬었다 갈 수 있는 곳으로 만들었다. 투숙객이 아니더라도 ‘오월 나무 창작소’에서 목공예품을 만들고, 레스토랑에서는 춘천과 강원도에서 수확한 유기 농작물을 활용해 요리한 신선한 메뉴를 맛볼 수 있다. 프랑스 유명 제과 학교인 에콜 르노트르에서 제과 과정을 수료하고 인턴십을 한 파티시에가 춘천시 서면 농가에서 키운 유기농 재료를 활용해 선보이는 카눌레, 구움과자 등도 맛볼 수 있다.
Owol School
Owol School is a renovated schoolhouse located in Owol-ri Village, Chuncheon, Gangwon-do Province.
The head of furniture brand bplusm breathed new life into the abandoned school by transforming it into a wonderful place to stay for everyone, including families. Guests and anyone interested in woodworking can take classes offered by Owol School. Visitors and guests can also enjoy delicious food made with organic crops harvested in Gangwon-do Province at Owol Restaurant. The property also offers a variety of baked goods, including canelés, prepared by a patissier who interned and completed a confectionary course at the famous French confectionery school École Lenôtre. The bakery uses organic ingredients grown on a farm near Chuncheon.
강릉선교장 선교장은 전주 이씨 효령대군의 11대손인 이내번이 처음 터를 잡은 후 후손들이 대를 이어 살고 있는 한국의 전통가옥이다. 국가민속문화재 제5호로 지정됐으며 한옥스테이를 통해 99칸을 지닌 옛 사대부의 집에서 머무는 경험을 할 수 있다. 매주 수요일 열화당에서 열리는 오르간 연주를 비롯해 전통 한식당 리몽에서 300년간 이어져 내려온 레시피로 만든 요리상을 만날 수 있다. 그 밖에 초당두부와 자연산 송이를 넣은 불고기덮밥을 조식으로 맛볼 수 있으며, 다식 만들기 체험도 진행한다.

Baekyangsa TemplestayLocated at the foot of Baegamsan Mountain, which spans both Namwon and Sunchang-gun County, Baekyangsa Temple was built over 1,400 years ago, in the 33rd year of the reign of King Mu of the Baekje Kingdom (18BC-660AD). The temple allows visitors to stay and experience rituals, offerings, bell-ringing ceremonies and other mainstays of temple life. Templestay guests can learn about temple food with Korean Buddhist nun and chef, the Ven. Jeong Kwan, who won the Icon Award Asia 2022.

디앤디파트먼트 제주 제주의 핫 플레이스 디앤디파트먼트는 제주 지역에서 만들어 계속 사용되는 상품을 발굴해 소개하는 복합문화공간이다. 2층에는 ‘d룸’이라는 스테이가 위치한다. 식물이 어우러진 플랜테리어와 회색 회벽 그리고 간결한 디자인으로, 혼자 머물수 있는 싱글룸부터 더블룸까지 총 13개 객실을 갖췄다. 1층 ‘d식당’에서는 제주의 ‘식’을 테마로 감귤고추장, 푸른콩된장, 말린 제주 곡물로 끓인 육수, 다래장을 기본으로 다양한 맛을 낸 음식을 선보인다. 제주 찻잎으로 만든 새봄중작과 감귤칩, 당근 파운드케이크도 먹어봐야 할 메뉴다.
D&Department Jeju by ArarioD&Department is a cultural complex that showcases products made and used on Jeju Island. The second floor features a boutique hotel called d-room, which offers a total of 13 single or double occupancy rooms. The decor features plants, gray walls, and simple designs. Located on the first floor, d-restaurant serves up a variety of Jeju-inspired food including tangerine red pepper paste, Jeju pureun kong soybean paste, broth boiled with dried Jeju grains and Daraejang. Other foods to try are saebomjungjak made from Jeju tea leaves, tangerine chips and carrot pound cake.

Artist Lee Inseob takes ash, the remnant of extinction, and applies layer after layer of it to canvas. As such, his work is a part of nature itself.
자연이 억겁의 시간 동안 만들어온 방대한 섭리를 언어라는 기표 안에 다 담기란 불가능에 가까운 일이다. 펜이 하지 못하는 일을 화가 이인섭이 붓으로 펼친다. 그에게 자연이란 삶 그 자체다. 오랜 시간 고향이라는 이상향을 탐색하다 발견한 강원도 양양 어성전 마을이 그의 삶이 펼쳐지는 캔버스. 인적이 드물어 자연이 한껏 더 가까워지는 작업실에서 이인섭은 40년이 넘는 세월 동안 자연에서 영감을 받으며 움직였다. “나는 어떤 계획과 의도를 가지고 자연을 묘사하지 않습니다. 자연은 계획이 없잖아요. 내가 사계절 동안 보고 듣고 느낀, 나도 모르게 내 안에 들어와 있는 자연의 장면들을 표현할 뿐이지요. 캔버스 위에서 붓이 가는 대로, 자유롭게.” 그 무아의 붓놀림은 길들지 않은 자연의 즉흥적이고 자발적인 감정을 완벽히 포착한다. 그와 함께 ‘끊임없는 탄생과 소멸의 순환’이라는 자연의 이치를 표현하는 작가만의 독특한 언어가 있다. “모든 물건은 타고 나면 재가 남습니다. 그 재는 다시 탄생의 매개가 되지요. 재에서 꽃이 피고, 나무가 자라잖아요. 재는 자연물이기도 하고, 자연 그 자체이기도 합니다. 그러한 이유로 재를 안료로 쓰고 있습니다.” 화폭이 단단한 토양이 되었다고 느낄 때, 그 위를 스쳐 지나가는 손과 붓. 자연에 머물며 응축한 감흥을 단숨에 펼쳐내는 이인섭의 작품은 완성되기 전에 이미 자연 그 자체다.
It is almost impossible for language to capture the entire vast order that nature has created over eons of time. But, where the pen fails, the brush of painter Lee Inseob flourishes. The artist has been drawing inspiration from nature for more than 40 years in his studio, located in Eoseongjeon-ri Village, Yangyang-gun County, Gangwon-do Province, where open valleys lie in harmony with lush forests. “I don’t have a specific plan or motive when I start painting. Nature doesn’t have any plans,” he says. Lee has his own artistic language through which he portrays the endless cycle of birth and death in nature. “All objects turn to ash when they are burned. That same ash then goes on to become the medium of birth. Flowers bloom from ash, and trees grow from it, too. Ash is a natural thing, and also nature itself. That’s why I use ash as a pigment for painting,” he explains. Lee’s work involves taking this ash, a remnant of extinction and the end of existence, and applying layer after layer of it onto the canvas. The inspiration stemming from immersion in nature unfolds in Lee’s work. Even before the paintings are finished, nature is captured on canvas.
Lee Inseob’s exhibition Nature can be viewed at Kiaf Seoul, held at COEX from September 2 to 6. Lee’s work also awaits visitors at ART TAIPEI (Oct. 21 to 24), Daegu Art Fair (Nov. 25 to 27) and Context Art Miami (Nov. 29 to Dec. 4).

지리산의 품 안에서 순례하는 법 영산(靈山)엔 늘 신화가 따른다. 지리산엔 우주의 어머니, ‘마고’의 이야기가 있다. 한민족의 탄생이 마고로부터 시작됐다는 설화다. 지리산 최고봉인 천왕봉 정상에 있는 비석 문구 “한국인의 기상, 여기서 시작되다”가 그 신비로운 서사를 뒷받침한다. 지리산의 옛 이름은 두류산. ‘백두산에서 흘러 내려온 산’이라는 뜻으로 한반도의 척추, 백두대간 산줄기가 이곳에서 끝난다. 조선시대에 쓰인 인문지리서 <택리지>에선 천왕봉이 “천하의 대명당”으로 기록돼 있다. 이 상서로운 땅의 기운을 받기 위해선 두 발로 땀 흘리며 수고를 다해 천왕봉을 오르는 것이 마땅하지만 해발고도 1915m의 높이는 쉽지 않은 길. 애쓰지 않아도 정상 가까이에 쉬이 다가가는 방법이 있다. 경상남도 산청 중산마을에 새로 난 트레일, ‘중산 두류생태 탐방로’로 들어서면 된다. 숲의 중층대에 나무 덱과 짚으로 엮은 깔개를 깔아 누구나 고행 없이 원시림과 야생동물의 삶에 쉽게 다가갈 수 있다.

How to Make a Pilgrimage to Jirisan Mountain Divine mountains always carry myths. For Jirisan Mountain, Korea’s first national park, there is the story of Mago, the mother of the universe. It is said that the Korean people originated from Mago. The inscription “The rise of Koreans begins here,” on a stone at Cheonwangbong Peak, the highest peak on Jirisan Mountain, supports this mysterious narrative. If you believe in sweating and struggling your way up to the peak to earn the energy of this holy land, the final altitude of 1,915m above sea level makes it no easy trek. However, there is a much easier way. Just take the newly created Duryu Ecological Trail, which starts at Jungsan Village in Sancheong-gun County.

성철스님 순례길은 그가 수행을 위해 떠난 길의 들머리에 있다. 엄혜산 자락, 유유히 흐르는 강물의 윤슬과 멀리 병풍처럼 펼쳐진 산자락을 눈에 담으며 생각에 잠길 수 있는 길이다.
Ven. Seongcheol’s pilgrimage trail lies at the start of his path to fulfillment. At the foot of Eomhyesan Mountain, you can lose yourself in thought as you take in the smooth river trickling slowly by while the base of the mountain unfolds like a screen in the distance.
겁외사 옆엔 성철 스님이 출가하기 전 살았던 생가터가 있다. Next to Geoboesa Temple is the birthplace of Ven. Seongcheol, where he lived until he became a Buddhist monk.
길은 중산마을 휴게소에서 시작된다. 1.3km 길이의 이 트레일엔 흥미로운 역사와 사연을 가진 소와 폭포, 바위가 쉴 틈 없이 등장해 걷기에 지루함이 없다. 소 구유처럼 생겼다고 해서 이름 붙은 구시소폭포, 부유하고 잘 노는 ‘한량’처럼 우아한 자태를 가진 활량소폭포를 지나면 잠시 걸터앉아 한숨 돌리고 싶은 용소가 나타난다. “용이 살다 어느 날 하늘로 승천했다”는 전설을 가진 이곳은 신비로운 물빛으로도 유명하다. “수면을 투과한 햇빛의 생동하는 자취가 물속에서 꿈틀대는 한 마리 용처럼 보인다”는 안내판의 설명이 과장처럼 느껴지지 않는다. 용이 바위를 딛고 성큼성큼 걸어갔다는 신선너덜이 탐방로의 마지막 코스. 산청에 오기 전, 산 타길 좋아하는 친구들이 “지리산은 확실히 엄마 품같이 마음이 편안해지는 곳”, “맑은 기운이 깃드는 기분” 같은 말로 초행자의 기대감을 부추겼는데, 과연 그랬다. 너덜 바위 위에 서서 천왕봉과 마주하니 가부좌를 틀고 앉아 명상이라도 해야 할 것 같은 기분. 깊은 숲의 품에서 대자연의 소리에 한참 동안 귀를 적셨다.
산 아래에도 마음이 유순해지는 길이 있다. ‘무소유’의 철학으로 한국인의 존경을 한 몸에 받은 성철 스님이 수행하며 걷던 길, ‘성철스님 순례길’은 산청 사람들의 일상에 스며든 산책로. 그가 태어난 생가 옆에 세운 절, 겁외사에서 시작해 경호강과 양천강이 만나는 지점 즈음에서 끝나는 이 길은 해 질 녘에 장관이다. 들과 산, 낮은 집들이 만드는 여백이 주홍빛으로 물드는 찰나, 산들바람에 흐느적대는 어린 대나무들, 공터에 앉아 저무는 순간을 누리는 동네 사람들이 어우러진 풍경 앞에 서니 성철 스님이 남긴 법어가 절로 흘러나온다. 산은 산이요, 물은 물이로다.

The path begins at the Jungsan Village rest stop. This 1.3km trail takes me past a never-ending array of pools, waterfalls and rocks that carry intriguing histories. After passing by Gusiso Waterfall, named after a cow’s trough, and Hwallyangso Waterfall, the next sight is Yongso Waterfall, a place that makes you want to sit for a moment and take a deep breath. Yongso Waterfall, famous for its azure color, is also said to be the home of a legendary dragon that ascended to heaven. Below the mountain, the Ven. Seongcheol trail is the path where Ven. Seongcheol, a Buddhist monk who was admired by Koreans for his philosophy of nonpossession, walked and practiced asceticism. The trail begins from Geoboesa Temple, next to the house of Ven. Seongcheol’s birth, and ends where the Gyeonghogang River meets the Yangcheongang River. The path is at its most beautiful around dusk.

느긋한 시간 여행 오래된 길이 주는 안락함도 있다. 지리산 아래, 남사천이 둥그렇게 감싸 안고 있는 남사예담촌은 700여 년을 이어온 고택이 운집한 마을. 세월의 켜를 고스란히 품은 옛 담장이 3.2km에 걸쳐 이어지는 이곳은 ‘한국에서 가장 아름다운 마을’ 1호로 이름 높다. 마을 어귀에 들어서면 토담과 돌담들 위로 철마다 피고 지는 능소화, 석류꽃, 감꽃, 이름 모를 넝쿨이 만드는 정겨운 풍경이 찾은 이들을 살갑게 반긴다. 옛 담장 너머의 집들은 대부분 대문을 활짝 열어두고 있다. 40여 채의 한옥 중 가장 오래된 집은 이씨 고가. 1700년대에 지은 것으로 알려진 이 저택은 태조의 딸 경순공주와 결혼한 이제의 후손들이 대대손손 지켜온 집이다. 이씨 고가 대문 앞, 300여 년 동안 서로를 와락 끌어안고 자란 회화나무 한 쌍을 지나 최씨 고가로 향한다. 소문난 만석꾼으로 알려진 전주 최씨 일가의 소유로 ‘부잣집’답게 가장 큰 규모를 자랑한다. 2개의 중문으로 구분된 안채와 사랑채, 장수를 기원하는 거북 모양의 나무 빗장, 주인이 위층에서 볼일을 보면 하인이 아래층에서 재를 뿌려 퇴비를 만드는 복층 구조의 화장실 등 진귀한 볼거리가 많다.

A Relaxed Journey Through Time Located below Jirisan Mountain and bordered by Namsacheon Stream, Namsa Yedamchon Village has a 700-year history. Among the 40 or so hanok (traditional Korean houses), the oldest is the house of the Lee clan. Believed to have been built in the 1700s, this house has been protected for generations by the descendants of Je Lee, who married Princess Gyeongsun, the daughter of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) founder, King Taejo. In front of the door of the Lee clan’s house, I pass by a pair of pagoda trees that have been growing in an upward embrace for some 300 years and head toward the Choi clan’s house.

담장길의 끄트머리를 향해 깊숙이 들어간다. 남사예담촌의 ‘오래된 것’ 중 가장 만나고 싶었던 존재가 안쪽에 꽁꽁 숨어 있다. 하씨 고가의 감나무로 수령이 600년을 훌쩍 뛰어넘는다. 세종 때 영의정을 지낸 하연이 ‘일곱 살 나이에 어머니에게 홍시를 드리기 위해 심은 나무’로 알려진 이 노거수(老巨樹)는 지금도 해마다 열정적으로 붉은 감을 게워낸다. 오래된 암석처럼 투박한 줄기에 슬며시 양 손바닥을 붙이고 고목의 부드러운 온기를 오랫동안 느꼈다.

마을 안엔 전통 방식 그대로 천연 염색 작품을 만들어 선보이는 갤러리가 있다. In the village, a gallery creates and displays fabrics dyed using traditional methods.
Owned by the Choi clan of Jeonju, which is rumored to be very wealthy, this house is of a size that befits a rich family. I walk toward the edge of the wall and venture inside. The one thing I want to see the most is hiding inside. The house of the Ha clan, believed to be the first family to move into Yedamchon, has a persimmon tree that has lived for well beyond 600 years. Even today, the tree produces persimmons. I furtively place both my palms on the trunk and feel the rich warmth of the old tree.

동의보감촌에서 몸과 마음을 보양하다 산청은 약초의 땅. 지리산에 자생하는 1000여 종의 토종 약초는 자연스럽게 이 고장을 한의학의 발상지로 만들었다. 산청에 ‘치유’, ‘휴양’, ‘웰니스’라는 수식어가 따르는 이유다. 동의보감촌엔 약초와 한의학에 얽힌 산청의 역사와 현재가 망라되어 있다. 산청한의학박물관과 엑스포주제관, 산청한방테마파크, 산청한방자연휴양림을 비롯해 호텔, 식당, 한의원, 상점 등의 편의시설까지 꼼꼼히 갖췄다. 동의보감촌을 찾은 이들은 대부분 ‘바위’에 가장 먼저 들른다. 이곳에 만지면 ‘기’가 돋는 3개의 돌이 있는데 그중 으뜸은 동의전 뒤 ‘귀감석’. “이 자리가 왕산과 필봉산의 기운이 모이는 명당입니다. 그런데 아무리 좋은 자리여도 그냥 방치하면 기가 흩어지거든요. 그래서 큰 바위를 두어 주변의 기운을 여기에 응집시키죠.” 문화해설사의 안내를 따라 기 바위에 등을 찰싹 붙였다. 거북 등껍질 문양 위에 새긴 갑골문자의 뜻, 풍수지리니 기운 같은 개념은 쉽게 와닿지 않지만, 높이 8m, 무게 12만 7000kg에 달하는 커다란 암석에 체중을 다 실어 기대니 몸에 잔뜩 밴 힘이 산들바람 같은 날숨과 함께 절로 빠져나간다.
Rejuvenation in Donguibogamchon Village Sancheong is a land of medicinal herbs. The 1,000 or so native medicinal herbs that grow on Jirisan Mountain naturally turned this region into a cradle of oriental medicine. The past and present of Sancheong, intertwined with medicinal herbs and oriental medicine, are perfectly captured in Donguibogamchon Village. The village is full of amenities, including hotels, restaurants, oriental medicine clinics and stores, as well as the Sancheong Museum of Herbal Medicine and the Hanbang Recreational Forest. The first stop for most visitors to Donguibogamchon Village is the rocks. There are three rocks here which are said to give off life energy when touched, and the pick of them is Guigamseok, located behind Donguijeon Hall. Following the instructions of our guide, I press my back against this energy rock. When I lean my full weight on this giant 8m-high rock, which weighs 127 tons, I can feel the tension leaving my body as I exhale with the mountain breeze.

산약초의 싱그러운 향이 진동하는 산청약초관, 허준과 한의학의 역사를 집대성한 박물관, 무릉계곡을 가로지르는 무릉교를 지나 지리산이 게워낸 좋은 것을 직접 취할 수 있는 곳으로 향한다. ‘음식과 약의 근본은 같다’는 ‘식약동원’을 철학으로 하는 약선 요리 집을 찾았다. 방만 한 상 위에 부려지는 오색의 찬과 국, 구이와 탕의 화려한 자태에 나간 넋을 되찾은 후 젓가락을 집어 들었다. 보드라운 노루궁뎅이버섯을 참기름에 찍어 한 입, 누에를 닮은 아삭한 초석잠으로 입맛을 돋운 후 산삼 배양근을 잘게 찢어 그대로 낸 삼채에 시선을 돌렸다. 혀를 가득 덮는 쌉싸름한 감촉과 매운 향, 그 뒤에 찾아오는 단맛이 일품이다. 지리산 흑돼지로 부친 육전, 각종 버섯과 한우를 팔팔 끓여낸 약선 쟁반 같은 묵직한 요리들이 줄줄이 젓가락을 기다리고 있었지만 서두르고 싶지 않았다. 이런 밥상 앞에선 위를 가득 메우는 포만감 대신 기운을 채우는 여유를 갖는 것이 예의다. 산청에서 보낸 이틀 여정 내내 무엇에 쫓기는 마음을 가져본 적이 있던가? 지리산의 넉넉한 품 안에서 한가로움을 좇는 시간이야말로 몸과 마음에 유익한 보양이라는 것을 새삼 깨달았다.

Meaning ‘a trail to walk with the West Sea,’ Seohaerang-gil begins in Haenam’s Ttangkkeut (Land’s-End) Village and ends on Ganghwado Island, Incheon. One particularly impressive stretch of the trail weaves across the shoreline of Taean-gun County in South Chungcheong-do Province.
노을이 내려앉는 해변이 있고 기름진 햇살이 가득 고인 갯벌이 있다. 갓 잡은 생선을 파는 어시장이 있고, 예쁜 수목원도 있다. 서해랑길 이야기다. 이 길은 전라남도 해남 땅끝마을에서 시작해 서해안을 따라가며 구불구불 이어지다 인천 강화도 평화전망대에서 끝난다. 무려 1800km를 뻗어나가는 초대형 트레일이다. 서해랑길은 ‘서쪽(西) 바다(海)와 함께(랑) 걷는 길’이란 뜻. 김포, 인천 강화, 안산, 아산, 화성, 당진, 태안, 서천, 김제, 군산, 부안, 영광, 목포, 진도, 해남 등을 지난다. 그중 태안에는 64코스에서 75코스까지 있고, 총길이는 약 187km에 달한다.
태안은 북쪽 이원면에서 남쪽 고남면까지 세로로 길쭉한 반도다. 학암포에서 영목항까지 리아스식해안이 펼쳐진다. 어디부터 갈까. 태안 구간 지도를 보며 한참을 망설인다. 꾸지나무골이며 만리포, 어은돌 같은 어여쁜 이름을 가진 해변이라니! 도대체 어떤 곳이길래 파도리며 물닭섬 같은 다정한 이름을 가지게 되었을까. 일단 북쪽 만대항에서 시작해 남쪽 어은돌까지 해안을 따라 내려가 보기로 한다. 72코스에서 시작해 68코스에서 끝나는데, 태안뿐만 아니라 서해안의 모든 풍경을 모아놓은 곳이라고 해도 과언이 아니다.
There is a beach where the sun sets after flooding the tidal flat with its beams of sunlight. There is a lovely arboretum and a fish market that sells freshly caught fish. This is the story of Seohaerang-gil, a trail that begins at Ttangkkut (Land’s End) Village in Haenam-gun County, South Jeolla-do Province, and ends at the Ganghwa Peace Observatory in Incheon. In direct translation seo means “west”; hae means “sea”; rang means “with”; and gil is “walking trail.” Stretching a staggering 1,800km, Seohaerang-gil is a massive trail. It crosses Ganghwado Island in Incheon, the counties of Hwaseong-gun and Taean-gun, the southern city of Mokpo, and Jindo Island among others. In Taean-gun, the sections numbered 64 through 75 have a total length of about 187km. Taean-gun County is a peninsula that reaches from Iwon-myeon Township in the north to Gonam-myeon Township in the south. Where should I start? As I look at the Taean map, I hesitate before deciding to start from Mandaehang Port in the north and head down the coast to Eoeundol Beach in the south. This journey starts on Section 72 and ends on Section 68. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that representative scenery of the entire West Coast can be found here in Taean.

안면도는 ‘안면송’이라고 불리는 소나무로 유명하다. 쭉쭉 뻗은 줄기가 특징인데, 안면도 곳곳에서 울창한 숲을 이루어 자라고 있다.Anmyeondo Island is famous for its pine trees. They are characterized by their long, stretching trunks, and they grow in dense forests throughout the island.
먼저 만대항. 72코스의 출발점이다. 이 코스는 꾸지나무골까지 이어진다. 만대항은 겨울 굴로 유명하다. 포구 인근에 굴 양식장, 염전 등이 마을과 어우러져 있다. 만대항이 자리한 가로림만 일대는 태안 바다 중에서도 어족의 산란장으로 유명하다. 우럭, 노래미, 농어가 쏠쏠하게 나오기 때문에 낚시꾼도 많이 찾는다. 실제로 방파제 앞에는 낚싯대를 드리운 사람이 많다. 꾸지나무골에서 시작해 학암포까지 이어지는 71코스는 ‘맛있는’ 길이다. 이 길에 태안을 대표하는 음식인 박속밀국낙지탕을 내는 식당이 많다. 원북면과 이원면 일대의 갯벌에서 박속밀국낙지탕에 들어가는 세발낙지가 많이 잡히기 때문. 박속으로 우려낸 말간 국물에 낙지를 넣고 한소끔 더 끓인 음식인데, 박속과 낙지가 절묘하게 만나 빚어낸 그 시원한 국물 맛은 한번 맛보면 평생 잊히지 않는다.
Section 72 extends from Mandaehang Port, famous for its oysters in the winter, to Kkujinamugol Beach. The oyster farms and salt ponds of the port merge seamlessly into the nearby village. Garorimman Bay, where Mandaehang Port is situated, is well known as a spawning ground for fish. Fishermen gather to catch the throngs of rockfish, spotty-bellied greenlings, and Japanese sea bass, with many casting their lines from the top of the seawall. Section 71, which starts at Kkujinamugol Beach and runs to Hagampo Beach, is a foodies’ trail. On this section, many restaurants serve baksok milguk nakjitang (gourd and octopus wheat soup), the representative dish of Taean. The gourd is steeped in a clear broth that is brought to a boil a second time after the octopus is added. The exquisite combination of the gourd and octopus produces an unforgettably refreshing broth flavor that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
학암포는 넓은 백사장과 암벽이 어우러진 곳이다. 느긋한 호미질로 해루질을 하는 사람들이 있다. 태안 갯벌에서는 바지락과 동죽이 많이 난다. 아이들과 함께 슬렁슬렁 호미질을 해도 한 바구니는 금방 캔다. 초가을 볕 아래 바지락을 캐는 엄마 아빠와 아이들. 우리가 만날 수 있는 가장 평화로운 풍경이 아닐까. 학암포부터 70코스가 시작된다. 두웅습지와 신두리해변, 신두리해안사구를 거치는데, 서해랑길 구간 중 가장 신비로운 풍경을 보여준다. 신두리는 수천만 년 전 자연의 신비를 느낄 수 있는 해안사구다. 해안사구는 해안 모래가 바람에 의해 육지 쪽으로 밀려 퇴적된 모래언덕을 말한다. 빙하기 이후 약 1만 5000년 전부터 서서히 형성된 것으로 추정된다. 전국 최대 해당화 군락지로 통보리사초, 모래지치, 갯완두, 갯메꽃 등의 식물이 자라고 있다. 해안사구 바로 앞은 신두리해변이다. 누군가 자로 쭉 그어놓은 듯한 드넓은 수평선이 펼쳐진다. 물빛은 서해라고 믿기지 않을 만큼 푸르다. 철 지난 파라솔이 우두커니 해변을 지키고 있다. 이곳의 모래가 오랜 세월 바람에 실려 가 해안사구를 만들었을 것이다. 신두리해변 가기 전, 두웅습지가 있다. 세계적으로도 그 중요성을 인정받아 2007년 우리나라에서 여섯 번째로 람사르습지에 등록됐다. 물자라, 밀어, 왕잠자리, 흰뺨검둥오리, 매자기, 수련 등 수많은 동식물이 서식하고 있다.
At Hagampo Beach, long stretches of white sand give way to rock faces. People calmly dig for shellfish in the mud as there are many Manila and surf clams in the Taean tidal flats. Even when slowly gathering clams with your children, you can fill your bucket in no time. Imagine mom, dad and the kids digging for clams under the early autumn sun. Could there be a more peaceful scene? Section 70 begins at Hagampo Beach and showcases the most mysterious scenery of the entire Seohaerang-gil. It passes by Duung Wetland, Sinduri Beach, and Sinduri Coastal Sand Dune. This is the only sand dune in Korea. On top of it you can feel the mysteries of nature. It is estimated that the Sinduri dune slowly started forming approximately 15,000 years ago. Home to the largest colony of beach roses in the country, there are also plants such as Asiatic sand sedge and Siberian sea rosemary. Just in front of the coastal dune sits Sinduri Beach, with a vast horizon beyond. The water is so blue that it’s hard to believe this is the West Sea. Before reaching the beach, you’ll find Duung Wetland, which was listed as Korea’s sixth Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2007.

국내 최초의 민간 수목원인 천리포수목원은 오밀조밀한 풍경을 자랑한다. 가을 한나절을 즐기기에 부족함이 없는 곳이다. Cheollipo Arboretum, the first private arboretum in Korea, isn’t very large but boasts an elaborate landscape. It is the perfect place to spend a few hours in autumn.
69코스에는 천리포수목원이 있다. 국내 최초의 민간 수목원이다. 1979년에 귀화한 독일계 미국인 고 민병갈(본명 칼 밀러) 설립자가 일궜다. 우리나라에서 가장 많은 식물 종류를 보유한 곳으로, 국내 자생종뿐만 아니라 전 세계에서 수집한 희귀 수목도 만날 수 있다. 습지원, 수국원, 호랑가시나무원, 암석원, 작약원 등 정원을 갖춘 수목원은 산책을 즐기기 좋다. 산책로가 잘 꾸며져 있다. 서쪽 산책로는 바다를 보며 걸을 수도 있고, 바다로 내려가는 문도 있다. 한 사람이 자신의 평생을 바쳐 뭔가를 이룩하는 것만큼 아름다운 일은 없다.
On Section 69 lies Cheollipo Arboretum, Korea’s first private arboretum. It was founded by the late Byung-gal Min (originally Carl Miller), a German American who became a naturalized Korean citizen in 1979. The facility contains the largest number of plant species in Korea, and here visitors can find not only indigenous vegetation, but also rare plants collected from all over the world. With its variety of gardens, the arboretum is the perfect place for a stroll.
만리포해변에 저녁이 왔다. 노을이 지면 사람들은 해변으로 내려온다. 바다와 사람이 어울려 그 자체로 풍경이 된다.When the sun sets, people come down to Mallipo Beach. The view of the silhouettes of the people against the sea becomes a scene in itself.
69코스의 끝은 만리포다. 서해안에서 가장 아름다운 해변 중 한 곳이다. 피서객이 빠져나간 해변은 조금이나마 한적하다. 여기까지 오다 보니 어느덧 저녁이다. 조용히, 천천히 밀물이 들고 있다. 하늘에서 폭포처럼 쏟아져 내리는 황금빛 속에서 청년들은 파도를 가르며 서핑보드를 탄다. 패들보드를 탄 아이들이 일렬횡대로 지나간다. 도로 위에 서서 바다를 보던 사람들이 하나둘 해변으로 내려선다. 아빠는 아이의 손을 잡고, 연인은 서로의 손을 잡고 바다 쪽으로 걸어간다. 시인 이상이 산골 마을의 노을은 엽서 한 장 크기만큼씩 온다고 했는데, 이곳 서해의 노을은 한꺼번에 들이닥친다. 어느샌가 온 해변을 집어삼킬 듯 노을이 덮쳐왔다. 9월의 어느 저녁, 올해도 벌써 3분의 2가 지났지만, 아무것도 이룬 게 없는 것 같아 아쉽지만, 그래도 지금을 좀 더 즐기는 게 좋겠다고 생각한다. 이렇게 아름다운 노을 앞에서 우리는 즐기는 것 말고 도대체 무얼 할 수 있단 말인가. 낙조 속 서퍼들의 웃음소리가 울려 퍼진다. 젊은 시절로 굳이 돌아갈 필요가 없다고 생각하지만, 이런 순간만큼은 저들이 가진 젊음이 부럽다. 젊다는 건, 아무것도 아닌 데에도 저렇게 즐거울 수 있다는 것이니까. 우리 생에는 가끔 맨발로 노을 지는 해변을 걷는 시간이 필요하다.
The end of Section 69 is Mallipo Beach, one of the most beautiful on the West Coast. Now that I’ve come all the way here, it seems the evening has already begun. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
수원화성의 북문이자 정문인 장안문은 왕이 수도인 한양에서 수원으로 들어오는 문이었다.Janganmun Gate, the main gate of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, is the gate that kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) passed through to enter Suwon from the capital, Hanyang (now Seoul).
조선 후기 큰 부흥을 이루었던 제22대 왕 정조의 지휘 아래 지어진 성곽 건축물이자 계획도시. 정약용이 설계했으며 18세기의 과학과 건축, 예술을 두루 반영한 독보적 건축물로 평가받는다. 이러한 가치를 인정받아 1997년에는 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정됐다. 수원화성 성곽길을 따라 산책하듯 걷다 보면 정조가 활쏘기를 하고 주변 경치를 보며 시를 짓기도 했던 정자인 방화수류정, 북쪽 성 밖의 아름다운 연못 용연 등 역사적 정취가 깃든 명소들을 마주할 수 있다. 또한 오는 10월 7일부터 9일까지는 제59회 수원화성문화제가 열린다. 10월 8일과 9일 양일간은 정조대왕 능행차 공동재현이 진행되는데, 서울시 창덕궁에서 시작해 화성시 융릉까지 총 59km에 걸쳐 정조대왕 능행차를 재현하는 축제다. 이 외에도 수원화성 미디어아트쇼, 세계유산축전 등 다양한 행사가 올가을 펼쳐질 예정이며, 이에 관한 정보는 수원문화재단 웹사이트(swcf.or.kr)를 통해 확인할 수 있다.
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is both a planned city and a fortress structure built at the command of King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), who led a great revival in the latter part of the dynasty. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is a unique structure, incorporating 18th century science, architecture and art. In recognition of its value, the fortress was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The 59th Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival will be held from October 7 to 9 this year, with a reenactment of King Jeongjo’s royal procession taking place on October 8 and 9. The original procession set off from Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul and traveled 59km over eight days to reach Yungneung in Hwaseong. Ddeum is a Korean restaurant located in the center of Haengnidan-gil Road that serves basil prawns on rice in an iron pot. Made from whole prawns aged for three days and served with pesto sauce, the fragrant taste of basil combined with the heavy texture of the prawns is captivating. The meal is accompanied by four side dishes, namely pickled squid, a short-fruit pimpinella salad, pickled garlic stems and young radish kimchi. Once you’ve finished most of the rice, simply pour warm barley tea into the iron pot to consume for a final treat.

Keepthat Roastery is a roastery and coffee house that opened in June this year as a sister branch to nearby Keepthat Coffee. The owners went to great lengths to blend in Suwon’s unique regional colors when creating both its interior and external façade. The most popular item at Keepthat Roastery is the ice vanilla latte, sold in a limited quantity of 100 per day. This drink is a refreshing and sweet treat, with handmade ice cream and freshly ground vanilla beans used in place of ice and syrup.

조선을 테마로 한 책방으로, 이곳의 독특한 이름은 조선시대 책 중개상을 의미하는 단어 ‘책쾌’에서 따왔다. 책방지기의 남편이 직접 지은 2층짜리 한옥에 자리하며, 민화와 갓 등 전통적인 요소가 가미된 인테리어로 한국적 운치를 느낄 수 있다. 조선 역사와 문화에 관한 책 위주로 큐레이션되어 있으며, ‘조선의 여성들’, ‘조선의 음식들’ 등 시즌별로 테마를 정해 기획전을 선보이기도 한다. 올 9월부터는 수원에서 활동하는 민화 작가 4명의 릴레이 소품전을, 10월에는 수원화성문화제의 일환으로 ‘정조의 말’을 주제로 한 강연 및 토크 행사를 개최할 예정이다.

골목 관광 활성화와 청년 예술가들의 활동 지원을 위해 운영되었던 대안공간 눈에서 지난 2010년 진행한 예술 프로젝트 ‘행궁동 사람들'의 일환으로 조성한 벽화마을. 낙후된 골목에 생기를 불어넣고 수원화성에 보전돼 있는 근현대 삶의 모습을 발견하기 위해 추진한 작업으로, 국내외 작가와 주민들이 함께 소통하며 10여 년의 기간에 걸쳐 완성했다. 행복하 길, 사랑하다 길 등으로 이루어져 있으며, 벽마다 각기 다른 개성의 작품이 그려져 있다. 이곳을 더 알차게 즐기고 싶다면 벽화마을 초입에 위치한 복합문화공간인 예술공간 봄에서 진행하는 예술 체험과 골목 투어에 참여해보자.
Created over a period of ten years by Korean and international artists in collaboration with local residents, this mural village was designed to reveal modern and contemporary slices of life preserved within the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress area and breathe new life into antiquated alleyways. Visitors looking for a more substantial experience can take part in alley tours and art lessons such as miniature mural painting at Art Space Bom, a multipurpose cultural center located at the entrance to the village.
화성행궁
Hwaseong Haenggung Palace
정조는 1789년 아버지 사도세자의 무덤을 수원으로 옮긴 이후 1800년까지 총 13차례에 걸쳐 수원 행차를 거행했으며, 이때마다 화성행궁을 거처로 삼았다. 576칸으로 이루어져 국내 행궁 중 가장 큰 규모인 화성행궁은 평상시 화성유수부 유수가 집무하는 관청으로도 활용됐다. 화성행궁은 현재 야간 개장 프로그램 ‘달빛정담’을 운영하고 있다. 올해는 5월 1일부터 10월 30일까지 진행하며, 밤이 내려앉은 궁궐에서 달빛을 따라 야경을 즐길 수 있다.
A haenggung was a temporary palace built for Joseon kings to live in during rural visits or times of war, and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace is where kings stayed while visiting royal tombs in the countryside. After moving the grave site of his father, Crown Prince Sado, to Suwon in 1789, King Jeongjo made 13 ceremonial visits to Suwon before the year 1800, each time residing in Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. You can enjoy moonlit vistas of the palace through a night program called Moonlight Tours until October 30.

Hwadam Botanic Garden
Located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do Province, the Hwadam Botanic Garden is an ecological arboretum that’s about an hour and a half away from Seoul via public transportation. Visitors will enjoy walking amid some 4,300 plant species. Tourists can take the monorail to the highest point of the garden to enjoy a breathtaking fall view. Those who stroll along the boardwalk may even come across small wild animals, such as a hedgehog or squirrel.

선운사

비밀의 정원 & 원대리 자작나무 숲
비밀의 정원은 군사작전 구역으로 민간인 출입이 금지되고 사진 촬영도 따로 마련된 포토 존에서만 가능한 등 제약이 많지만, 원시림을 감상할 수 있어 찾는 이가 많다. 산자락이 둥글게 감싼 이곳은 침엽수, 활엽수 등과 함께 흙길과 새벽안개가 어우러진 신비로운 풍광을 품고 있다. 인근 원대리 자작나무 숲도 인제를 대표하는 단풍 명소 중 한 곳이다. 70여만 그루의 자작나무와 단풍이 이뤄내는 조화는 균형 있게 채색된 그림을 보는 듯하다.
Secret Garden and Wondae-ri Birch Forest
The Secret Garden is off-limits to civilians because it’s located within a military operations area, and photos are only allowed at designated photo zones. Despite the restrictions, the photo zones remain popular among travelers who appreciate views of virgin forests. The dirt paths and the early morning fog add to the mysterious charm. Nearby the garden, Wondae-ri Birch Forest is also a good fall foliage destination. It boasts picturesque scenery featuring some 700,000 birch trees.

휠체어를 위한 저상버스의 경사로 A bus ramp for wheelchair users
The basic principles that underpin universal design are of comparatively recent origin. The movement was launched in 1997 when American architect Ronald Mace, who dreamed of buildings that could be easily accessed by all people, gave a presentation at North Carolina State University’s Universal Design Center. Requiring the use of a wheelchair after contracting polio at a young age, Mace struggled with many obstacles after entering college, where he majored in architecture. His views, which later gained traction as architects began to fight for accessible buildings, resulted in the 1988 Fair Housing Amendments Act and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. Mace defined universal design as the design of products, environments, programs and services to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. He summarized these principles in the following seven points: equitable use, flexibility, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate size and space for approach and use.

그런데 이미 이런 원칙을 아우르며 상업적으로도 크게 성공해 유니버설 디자인에 대한 관심을 높인 상품이 있었으니 바로 미국 주방 기구 회사 옥소의 ‘굿 그립’이다. 미국의 사업가 샘 파버와 그의 아내는 은퇴 후 프랑스로 장기 여행을 떠났는데 숙소에 비치된 도구로 음식을 하던 아내가 아픔을 호소했다. 손에 관절염을 앓는 상황에서 손잡이 부분이 얇은 금속 재질인 필러로 사과 껍질을 벗기는 게 쉽지 않았기 때문이다. 파버는 환자, 노인, 아이, 초보자까지 쉽고 편하게 쓸 수 있는 주방용품이 새로운 틈새시장이라고 생각하고 디자인 컨설팅 회사 스마트 디자인과 합심한다. 이후 수많은 리서치와 프로토타입을 만들면서 문제가 명확해졌다. 결론은 손잡이였다. 스마트 디자인은 자전거 손잡이에서 영감을 얻어 다소 통통하고 원만한 타원형으로 손잡이를 바꿨다. 굵은 두께 덕분에 손목에 힘이 덜 들어가 피로감이 줄었고 특수 고무를 활용해 편안하고 폭신한 그립감이 느껴졌다. 특히 엄지손가락이 닿는 부분을 유연한 머리빗 모양으로 마감해 마찰력을 높임으로써 손힘이 약한 사용자가 스스로 힘을 조절하며 기구를 제대로 사용할 수 있게 했다. 1990년 파버는 옥소를 창립하고 그해 감자 칼, 깡통 따개, 오렌지 필러 등 15개의 굿 그립 시리즈를 공개했다. 기존 상품 단가의 3배에 달하지만 그 진가를 알아본 고객들은 굿 그립에 열광했고 이후 10년간 매년 37%씩 성장하며 유니버설 디자인의 신화가 됐다.
However, there was already a line of products created with these principles in mind. Created by American kitchenware company OXO, the Good Grips products enjoyed great commercial success while also raising interest in universal design. American entrepreneur Sam Farber and his wife had been on a long-term post-retirement vacation in France when his wife complained of pain while cooking with the utensils provided in their place of accommodation. With arthritic hands, she was struggling to peel an apple using a metal peeler with a thin handle. Farber realized that there was a market for simple and easy-to-use kitchenware for seniors, children, kitchen novices and those with disabilities. He teamed up with the design consulting firm Smart Design, and together they carried out research and made countless prototypes to improve the handle. After finding inspiration from bicycle handles, Smart Design switched to a thicker, more user-friendly oval handle. Thanks to this change, the handles placed less strain on the wrists. Special rubber was added to provide a soft and comfortable grip. In addition, the part that comes in contact with the user’s thumb was designed in the shape of a flexible comb to increase friction. This enabled those with weaker hands to adjust the level of strength applied to use the tool effectively. Farber founded OXO in 1990 and released 15 products in the Good Grips series that year, including a potato peeler, a can opener and an orange peeler. They were almost three times as expensive as existing products, but when customers discovered the true value of the products, they fell in love with Good Grips. The company achieved an annual growth of 37% over the next decade, becoming a legendary force in universal design.

이제 유니버설 디자인은 우리 주변에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 바닥을 낮추고 계단을 없애 휠체어가 오르락내리락하기 편한 저상버스와 요즘 고속도로 휴게소나 공공 화장실에서 자주 보이는 다목적 화장실도 유니버설 디자인이다. 한국 브랜드 이원이 만든 손목시계인 브래들리 타임피스도 빼놓을 수 없다. 이 제품은 옆면과 앞면으로 파인 홈을 따라 움직이는 2개의 구슬이 시침과 분침 역할을 대신한다. 구슬을 만지고 돋을새김으로 처리한 시간 구분선을 통해 손끝으로 시간을 인식할 수 있다. 색약자와 비색약자가 함께 볼 수 있는 네이버의 지하철 노선도 또한 신통하다. 매 라인마다 외곽선을 추가하고, 환승역의 경우 몇 호선을 탈 수 있는지 숫자로 친절하게 정리했다.
Now, universal design is all around us. Examples include low-floor buses, which are accessible by wheelchair users and accessible toilets that are now commonly found at rest stops along Korean highways. There is also the Bradley Timepiece wristwatch created by Korean brand Eone. Two magnetized ball bearings move around grooves carved into the front and side of the watch. This makes it possible for users to tell the time by running their finger over the raised hour markers and feeling where the ball bearings are. Another remarkable example of universal design is Naver’s subway map, which can be viewed by colorblind people. Contour outlines have been added to each subway line and the transfer stations are marked with numbers.

London design studio PriestmanGoode debuted a mobility device that borrows from the design of a travel suitcase to help people get around. The device, which resembles a small foldable shopping cart, can be used as a standing or seated electric scooter depending on the user’s age and needs. The attention paid to color, materials and finish are also fitting of the name Scooter for Life. Swiss start-up Scewo produces highly agile and versatile wheelchairs. The sturdy body is fitted with rubber caterpillar track wheels that resemble those of a tank, and the company applied gyroscope technology to help the chair stay balanced. This wheelchair is capable of climbing stairs, taking on steep inclines and handling slippery surfaces. The product is perfect not only for people with disabilities, but also for senior citizens. As more people live to be over 100, we’ll see a greater interest in people looking to enrich their lives through products that discretely fulfill their practical needs. As there are 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide, the market is huge. The companies that grasp this reality will be the ones that survive in the 21st century.

Ailo’s Journey follows the journey of Ailo, a reindeer, along a fjord in Finnish Lapland bordered by vast, snow-covered coniferous forests. Viewers can observe the lives of foxes, bears, wolves and other animals through Ailo’s eyes. Dancing with Jikji is a historical documentary centered on Jikji, the world’s first book printed with moveable metal type. Determining whether this metal type, which is considered a hallmark of civilization, is the first of its kind is a crucial task. With the hypothesis that the Gutenberg metal type was influenced by Korean metal type, the production crew begins a search to find out how this occurred, facing Eurocentrism and conspiracy theories on their journey.

Rather than opting for computer graphics at the expense of the plot, the film shows Cruise in dazzling real action scenes. In addition, the film caters to nostalgia, providing an even more exciting experience for viewers.

Due to difficult circumstances at home, Ji-woo Han (Dong-hwi Kim), who attends a private school for Korea’s top 1% of gifted students, has lower grades than his classmates, who receive expensive tutoring. He is especially struggling with math, to the point that his homeroom teacher recommends he transfer to a regular high school. But Hak-sung Lee (Min-sik Choi), a school security guard who is hiding his genius mathematical ability, takes Ji-woo under his wing. A warm relationship arises between the two as Ji-woo begins learning math from Hak-sung, after accidentally discovering his secret.

Drake, who has been setting trends in the pop and hip-hop scenes since he made his music debut with his mixtape Room for Improvement in 2006, surprised music fans around the world with the sudden release of his seventh full-length album Honestly, Nevermind on June 17. The chart dominator has seen all of his albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Jimmy Cooks (ft. 21 Savage), one of the songs on the album, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the same time, making Drake the first male solo artist to twice hold the top spot on both charts concurrently. He achieved the feat previously with Certified Lover Boy and its single Way 2 Sexy last September. In contrast to the artist’s previous album releases, Honestly, Nevermind focuses on electronic house beats rather than hip-hop. The album is mainly made up of dreamy, rhythmic house tracks created with Black Coffee, a deep house DJ and producer from South Africa. Jimmy Cooks (ft. 21 Savage), the only hip-hop song on the album, features a hard beat, and listeners can enjoy the rapping of 21 Savage, who also featured on Post Malone’s song Rockstar. Along with the release, Drake published a long letter about the people who provided him with inspiration for the album. The letter ends with the sentence “Dedicated to our brother V,” referring to Drake’s close friend, fashion designer Virgil Abloh. Abloh died last year after a two-year battle with cancer. Listeners can hear Virgil Abloh’s voice on the second half of the track Sticky.

The pop star wrote and produced the track after lead actor Tom Cruise, along with chief composers Hans Zimmer and Harold Faltermeyer, requested that she create a song that would bring the movie soundtrack together. The music video was directed by Joseph Kosinski, who interspersed clips from the movie between scenes of Lady Gaga in a bomber jacket singing next to a fighter aircraft.

The 15-track album includes four new songs — the title track Beatbox; To My First; Sorry, Heart; and On the Way — as well as 11 songs from Glitch Mode. Beatbox is an old-school hip-hop dance song which incorporates Beatboxing samples to create an upbeat feel, while delivering the message that NCT DREAM will continue to release music colored with their own unique style.

The title track FEARLESS includes credits for senior producer Si-hyuk Bang; singer-songwriter BLVSH, who worked on BTS’ Life Goes On; and famous American pop artist Destiny Rogers.

옷소매 붉은 끝동 The Red Sleeve
동명 소설을 원작으로 한 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 자신이 선택한 삶을 지키고자 한 궁녀 덕임과 정조 이산의 로맨스를 다룬 드라마다. 임금의 성은을 두 번 거절했다는 의빈 성씨의 이야기를 바탕으로 한 것으로 알려졌다. 그동안 영화나 드라마로 자주 제작됐던 영조와 정조 시대의 이야기에 중점을 두고 있지만 임금의 시선이 아닌 궁녀가 화자가 되어 스토리를 이끌어나간다는 점에서 여타 작품들과는 다르다. 옷소매의 붉은 끝동은 왕의 여인, 궁녀라는 징표인데 이를 제목으로 내세운 것도 드라마의 내용과 관련이 있다. 주인공 ‘덕임’은 궁녀이면서 동시에 자신을 잃고 싶지 않은 모습을 잘 담아내 현대 여성상을 반영했다는 평을 들었다. 그 밖에도 충실한 역사 고증과 아름다운 연출을 통해 보는 이들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었다. 드라마는 2021 MBC 연기대상에서 올해의 드라마상을 수상했으며, 주연을 맡은 이준호와 이세영은 이 드라마를 통해 각각 최우수연기상을 받았다.
Based on the novel of the same name, The Red Sleeve is a drama about the romance between Deok-im Seong, a servant at the royal court, and San Yi, who later becomes King Jeongjo. It tells the story of how Seong, who later changes her first name to Eui-bin, twice rejected the king’s demand that she become a lady of the court (concubine). While also touching on the stories of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo, who are regularly featured in movies and dramas, the series is different from most other works in that Seong is the narrator of the story. Red sleeves are a symbol of being the king’s servant, hence the inspiration for the title. Seong, the main character in The Red Sleeve, was praised for acting like a modern woman by serving in the court but at the same time holding onto her identity. The show was highly rated due to its historical accuracy and its large audience. The show, originally planned as a 16-episode series, ended with 17 episodes thanks to its popularity. The Red Sleeve received the Drama of the Year award at the 2021 MBC Drama Awards, while stars Jun-ho Lee and Se-young Lee each won awards for Best Actor in the male and female categories.
