Summer Vibes in Guam

Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific Ocean, is a tropical island with a distinctive vibe. The culture is American, but life is spent at a pace as leisurely as the sunbeams sparkling on the ocean waves. This summer, take things slow with the familiar yet fantastic rhythms of island life.

Ypao Beach

Popular Seaside Park

Ypao Beach, located adjacent to the
Governor Joseph Flores Memorial (Ypao Beach) Park, offers a seamless blend of island routines and leisurely pursuits. On weekends, smoke rises from barbecue grills, and children go snorkeling and play in the water. The grassy fields along the coast are a community treasure, hosting not only family picnics but also a variety of local events. Each season’s cultural itinerary includes concerts, RC car races and Korean and Japanese festivals. If you’re lucky, you may stumble upon one of these events during your trip. The beach is not only a tourist hot spot but a place where you’ll get a taste of the local lifestyle.

Jungle River Cruise

Emerald-Hued Voyage of Discovery

A jungle river cruise along the Talofofo River, in southern Guam, is a chance to explore the island’s tropical ecosystem and experience the culture of the Chamorro, Guam’s native people. Floating down the gentle river under the lush foliage, watch out for coconut crabs hiding on the shore and various creatures scampering up the tree trunks. Feeding wildlife, as the water ripples with the reflection of the rainforest around you, is thrilling not just for youngsters but for grown-ups too. After the jungle excursion, the call of a Chamorro conch shell welcomes you to a traditional thatched house. Coconuts can be peeled and eaten here as you watch a demonstration of traditional fire making. A lunch consisting of local barbecue and red rice is provided midway through the tour, and there’s even a chance to tour a farm and meet the animals there.

Pagat Cave

Hidden Adventure in Northern Guam

If you’re looking for an adventure away from the tourist traps, Pagat Cave in northern Guam may be the place for you. Get ready for a wild trek in a thickly wooded area. Plunging into the jungle on this rugged track is an experience in and of itself. Instead of going uphill as on most hikes, the trail will take you down into the earth. The destination is a natural limestone cave so dark that hardly anything can be seen without a flashlight. Just imagine the thrill of swimming in that pool! The silence and darkness enjoyed in the cold water is an experience you’ll never forget.

Wednesday Night Market

Beating Heart of the Island

The Chamorro Village Wednesday Night Market is the biggest regular market held in Guam, bustling with crowds of locals and tourists. Open each Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., a host of food trucks serve up a variety of delicious bites including local treats like banana lumpia and coconut juice. It’s also fun to browse the traditional handicrafts on display. The market also features a range of entertaining activities for kids such as carabao (water buffalo) rides, while traditional concerts and dancing unfold on stage, keeping the party going.

The traditional dances and fire shows are a smorgasbord for the senses, with the stage trembling under the pounding feet of the dancers. The Guam-style barbecue buffet offered here is sure to satisfy visitors of all ages. Before the performance begins, be sure to step out onto the golden sand for that picture-perfect selfie. After the concert, you’ll also have a chance to take some photos with the performers, providing lasting memories for children and adults alike.
